Yoga 710-14IKB Ram upgrade disaster - constant battery drain in sleep!

Q: Yoga 710-14IKB Ram upgrade disaster - constant battery drain in sleep!

Hello. I have purchased the Lenovo Yoga 170-14IKB with 1080p touchscreen, 8gb RAM and i5-7200U.Since it is a bit older, and I realized I need more RAM for my school projects and assignments, I decided to go for a "Crucial SO-DIMM 16GB DDR4 SDRAM 2400MHz CL17 Dual Ranked" memory, since on the Crucial's website it was stated that this Yoga supports that RAM. So I clicked purchace, got the RAM, upgraded, and suddenly my Yoga is warm when in sleep. It also draws so much power in sleep in Windows 10, that it discharges in a few hours when still in sleep. Before the upgrade, the Yoga lasted a week or two in sleep mode. Now, only a few hours. Is there any way to solve this issue? I was considering a BIOS upgrade might help, but I'm running the lates bios 2XCN38WW (V2.12).Are you aware of this issue? Is anyone else having this issue? Can I provide you with any more information to help me solve this problem? I need my Yoga's battery life as I spend a lot of time in school during the day. Also, I'm running Window 10 x64 Pro - build 17134. Thank you in advance!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there, There are long threads about this topic and I reviewed them but I could not find a solution. I purchased an X1 yoga recently and I am experiencing battery drain during sleep, on modern standby periods. I ran a sleep study and according to the report, Nvme controller is active for most of the sleep period, there is also an unregistered device, which is also active during that time period.  I reviewed potential solutions, I updated all windows and nvme drivers from intel but it still drains 1% battery/hour during sleep.  I don't know what else I can do. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Battery drain in sleep mode is excessive compared to other Windows laptops. Leaving the office with a full charge, not powering on the unit at home, I come in the next day and the battery is 89%. Same scenario over a weekend - Leave the office with 100% charge, come in Monday morning, having not used the laptop and the battery is 78%. This has nothing to do with the fancy OLED or anything - it wasn't turned on. Hope this can be addressed in a BIOS update. I really want to love this laptop but the short battery life compared to advertised specs and the excessive battery drain while sleeping leave me with mixed feelings.

Hi. I've updated all the drivers, per technical support's advice. I'm losing 1-5% per day when shut down and 5-10% per day in sleep mode on my new Yoga 920. Is anyone else having this problem? Do tech support read these forums?

Hi amote,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Battery draiining reports are also visible on other OEM forums as well and most likely related to similar features offered by Windows 10. Such also applies to different model of different macnufacturers as well.

Disabling fast start as discussed here would be a good step to try first.

Our forums are peer to peer community discussion group but Tech support (although maybe limited to their own scope of support) also utilizes the discussions we have for investigation of issues.

I bought my Yoga 13 (type 20175) brand new in 2014.  It shipped with Windows 8, 128GB, 4GB, if I recall correctly.  I had a license for W8 Pro that I used and there was a free 8.1 upgrade that I completed not long after purchase. Upgrades over the last (almost) 3 years have been boosting it to 8GB of ram, installing a Samsung SSD 850 EVO (250GB), Windows 10 (Pro), and now a battery. Sometime in 2015, I started noticing that if I didn't use the laptop and left it off for 2 or 3 days, the battery would completely discharge to 0%.  I chalked it up to age, and could still get several hours of moderate use in a day, so it wasn't a priority.  Finally, I bit the bullet and bought a brand new battery and put it in last week. Nothing changed.  I still have the same problem. In retrospect, it may have coincided with the installation of Windows 10.  Below is a further description of the problem and things I have tried.   PROBLEM:When shutting down, the battery loses an average of 2.5% per HOUR. (i.e. after 10 hours, it goes from 100% to 75%)This is consistent whether I use the Windows Start menu, the power button, or a command prompt (shutdown /s /f /t 0) to turn it off.  By the way, putting it in hibernate burns at the same rate. When putting the laptop to sleep, the battery loses only about 0.75% per HOUR (i.e. after 10 hours, it goes from 100% to 92%).  This occurs regardless of how I put it to sleep... Recently, I noticed that my battery have been draining quite fast while in sleep mode. I investigated the issue by turning off bluetooth, background apps, etc before sleep. There is no difference. I still loses like 20% of my battery in 8 hours. So, I typed powercfg /a in cmd to see if anything pops up, and i noticed that the only supported standby state is S0. It states, supported S0, hibernate, and fast startup. S1,S2,S3 are all not supported. Then, I read up some info on sleep states, and it appears that the s0 sleep state isn't actually sleeping, it is just the idle state. How do I change my sleep state and/or ultimately get rid of this massive battery drain when sleeping? I can't just hibernate because I have a SSD and it will use up sleep cycles. Thank you very much.

A:Sleep modes? Battery Drain in Sleep

Thank you for joining in on the HP Support Forums and Welcome @someguy111,  I understand that your battery is draining while in sleep mode and you had asked "How do I change my sleep state and/or ultimately get rid of this massive battery drain when sleeping?" Computer battery life varies, depending on power management settings, programs running on the computer, screen brightness, external devices connected to the computer, and other factors (even when it is a new purchase). Have you tried to turn down the brightness?Have you tried putting the Notebook on a power saver mode?Do you happen to have any USB devices connected to your Notebook while it is in a sleep state or turned off?  To learn more about how to Improve Battery Performance, please follow the document provided in the hyperlink.  If your notebook computer battery does not Hold a Charge, you can try to troubleshoot the battery to see if it needs to be replaced. Sometimes, all it is is that the battery could need to be recalibrated. There is a document called Testing and Calibrating the Battery. I am a Yoga 700-14ISK user for 2 years. And I had encounter serveral issues with this laptop before (and the service center helped me to fix them) However, now there is an issue I just have now - my battery is draining fast like 1% lost per 2-3 min for light usage (browsing on Chrome or doing my schoolwork either on Microsoft Office or Google Drive) I suspected it was due to my battery wear level. However, as I monitored it, I realised it keep fluctuating (from 19.64% to 42.02%) until I re-calibrate which gives me 38.51% and then 38.71% after a charge to 60%. Is it possible the battery wear level can cause the quick drain in battery?  Is this battery wear level normal? I would also like to point out that I had the battery changed over a year ago and I normally used my laptop for schoolwork and gaming (occasionally now after realising the issue.) I am also going to have an internship (at least 6 months) from July so I am very worried that my laptop can't last long especially its battery. Hence, should I go to a Lenovo service center and request for a battery replacement? Please give me any possible reasons on why the laptop battery starts to drain fast and its battery wear level sharp increase, and also possible solutions for these issues. I would like to know more about it in order to sustain my laptop at least for a year.

Hi, I purchased a Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6th gen (20KG) this week.I have the issue that it drains significant battery when in sleep mode (connected standby).I ran the microsoft sleepStudy (powercfg /SleepStudy) and identified that the battery drain in "modern standby" is still 1300mW. That equals 2.4% battery / hour, whereas the modern standby should get below 0.33% battery/hour.As a result the battery is essentially empty if you charge in the evening and put the notebook into sleep over night. The battery drain is dominated (~99%) by the entry "Fx Devices" - "Standard NVM Express Controller (\_SB.PCI0.RP05.PXSX)", which has 100% active time (i.e., is active during entire standby period). In device manager, I find the entry "Storage controllers" - "Standard NVM Express Controller", which looks fine and is a Microsoft driver in Version 10.0.17134.1.I cannot find a more appropriate driver on the Lenovo page. The Lenovo NVMe firmware upgrade tool (if related at all) tells me that no FW upgrade is available for my model LENSE20512GMSP34MEAT2TA. Regarding my System: I purchased the X1C without operating system, installed an existing windows 10 home. I installed all updates up to build 1803. I installed Lenovo System Update and installed all available items / drivers. Also I updated the BIOS from the Lenovo support page. My questions:- Do you also have this kind of strong battery drain in sleep mode?- Do you also have the Standard NVMe Microsoft driver, or am I... I've recently (13th of April) bought new Yoga 530-14IKB. It has adequate CPU i3-8130U, which is faster than i5-6200U in my sister's Acer laptop, but I anyway don't play any games. Despite that, its battery life isn't good. It works about 3-3,5 hours in Chrome. In task manager I've noticed that Yoga Mode Control is constantly using 15-30% CPU and its battery usage is described as very high. After disabling it, I can't switch to the tablet mode and keyboard and touchpad don't turn off. Is there somebody who has Yoga laptop and experience similar problem?

The keyboard lights are on but notning except a hard reset works.Sometimes I do the hard reset and find that the internet webpages sometimes are "saved" and opens up when I power up again. The fan has also started to wound alot more recenlty. My guess is that some downloaded upgrade caused this but I dont know how to fix.I have tried downloading all the latest drivers etc.I have also tried a ton of tips from different forums regarding power settings, hybernation and such but nothing works. All of this happened right after the bad update so I know that the problem is not the battery itself..Thank you

Dear forum users and Lenovo developers, I have noticed that my battery level is dropping from 82% to 81% in a couple of days while plugged in. On my setting, I didn't select the "Standby mode to lower power use whenever it's possible" option, while having set a threshold for charging up to 85%. I suspect the battery level has dropped while I put the computer in sleep mode. This happened after I upgraded the Win 10 to its Anniversary Update version recently. Should I tweak any settings around to make the power/battery level stable? Thanks!

However, now I have an annoying issue regarding the battery.  Going from 100% to about 76% could take about 2 hours, but... from 76% to 6% takes a minute. It doesnt downscale normally, but rather jumps immediately down to 6% and then warns me about low battery...  With this issue, the computer is completely useless without the powercord...so, its a bit useless as a laptop yes. Would really appreciate any help here!! Running Win 10 with the latest updates.

My Yoga 3 pro's battery is draining at 5-7% per hour even when the machine is powered off.(not sleeping or hibernating - properly shut down)This has happened about a year ago, where both battery and motherbord have been replace under warrany.Lenovo technicians claim it has, this time, something to do with the HDMI PCB and cable. The machine is already two weeks in "repair". My question: Is this a known issue? if so, what is the correct/recommended course of action?(other than not buying Lenovo... too late) Thanks, Assaf.

I had a very bad experience in the past few days because of the offering driver "Intel(R) Smart Sound Technology (Intel(R) SST) Audio Controller (\_SB.PCI0.HDAS)." Hello, I have a yoga 920 that when I put it into sleep mode the battery drains from 100% to 5% overnight.  I've looked through forums and tried to find solutions but this one appears to be resistant to previous solution or I am implementing the solutions poorly.  I tried deleting and reinstalling the Intel Management Engine Interface but still faced the same behavior.  I altered the power plan so that in sleep mode I disabled the Turn on Fast Start up.  I also changed what happens when I close the lid from sleep to hibernate and the battery stopped draining overnight.  While hibernating works it doesn't solve the sleep power drain problem.  I ran a sleep study and found that the camera was draining the battery as a USB deviceI disabled the USB always on and I don't have any other devices connected to the laptop.   Are there any other methods for disabling features during sleep that might be draining power? Thanks

I know this is an issue for many users and it was for me. I probably found the solution, at least the problem is fixed for me.
It pretty much looks like not the Intel stuff is the problem but the WiFi that keeps the machine up.
Go to
Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections
Right click the Wifi adapter and select "Properties", then "Configure" and uncheck the box under "Power Management". Reboot.
Fixed everything for me so far.

There is no heavy usage of the laptop, no downloading etc.In my previous laptop (ideapad 510), this happened as well and eventually progressed into losing ~50% in 48 hours. They ended up repairing it twice and taking it back in the end and this cost a lot of time.  Does anybody have any solutions for this problem?Kind regards,Maarten

Hi, I got a used Lenovo Yoga 2 11 (YB02496129), installed Windows 10 and swaped out the old hard drive for an ssd (of course installed all drivers for my device). When powered off, I lose up to 50% of charge while the notebook is turned off (not sleep or energy saving). The battery itself seems fine, because I can still use it for roughly 3-5 hours. As I thought that it is an Windows 10 issue (software based), I installed linux ubuntu 18.04. Same result, 33% battery drain overnight. What I tried:- reading through other forum posts with the same problem- installing/deinstalling Lenovo Vantage (updated my bios and drivers)- changed the power off button behavior (shutdown instead of energy saving)- turning of the device by holding the powerbutton for 10 seconds- changed the ssd (so I basicly got my windows 10 ssd out and insterted a fresh one for ubuntu)- installed linux ubuntu 18.04 I cant use a notebook that overnight loses all of its charge for obvious reasons. Do you have any sugesstions? Seems like its a known problem, maybe someone solved it already.

When in standby (or connected standby) the Yoga consumes quite a lot of battery. In just a few hours, the battery capacity was reduced by 10%.Because of intelligent hibernation, my PC does not run out of battery during the night, but then it makes standby pretty much useless. I've seen similar issues being discussed for the X1 Yoga at these forums, and I believe that a BIOS update was issued to fix the problem.Cannot seem to find a BIOS upgrade for the 920 that has a fix, though. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Hi,

It appears based on the below post that Lenovo fixed this problem on X380 Yoga.  Can this be released for X1 Yoga 3rd generation?

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X380-Yoga-High-battery-drain-when-off-again/t...

I have already done the below

- Windows Quick Start is off
- USB-power when off is off
- Wake-On-LAN or USB-C is off
- BIOS updated to N25ET35W 1.21
- I have uploaded BIOS settings to default
- Disabled thunderbolt
- run battery guage reset twice

Battery drain is not as bad as the other person on the X380 but I still lose after making all the above changes 1-3% overnight.  Despite what support says I do not believe that this should be considered normal.  This has never happened on any of my other thinkpads except for my TP25 which was fixed after disabling fast start up.

Hello my fellow ThinkPad friends, I know that there are already a couple of threads out there concerning high battery drain when the device is completely shut down, but none for the X380 Yoga yet. In some cases (E-Series ThinkPads), a BIOS-Update was released to solve the problem. I would kindly like to ask the Lenovo team to try and figure out whether the same can be accomplished for the X380 Yoga.  When my device is shut down, it usually drains 10-15% a day, which cannot be a regular thing. Of course, I have tried all the usual stuff: - Windows Quick Start is off - USB-power when off is off- Wake-On-LAN or USB-C is off- BIOS updated to R0SET29W 1.13 If you have any other ideas, feel free to post them. Otherwise, I would really appreciate for a BIOS update that might adress the issue. It is kind of annoying charging your device for the weekend knowing that by the next day, you will already have lost 1 to 2 hours of runtime. Best wishes,Manuel

When I generate a sleep study, I do get a graph at the top that has SoC percentages, but the table below is mostly empty, e.g. the entire columns "ENERGY CHANGE" and "% CAPACITY REMAINING AT START" only contains "%" signs, but no numbers. Also, the reported changes in mWh are unrealistically small (0-5 mWh even in 6+ hours of Modern Standby, when it should be around 8,000 mWh according to the graph at the top). I'm using Windows Version 1809 (OS Build 17763.316) and a ThinkPad Carbon X1 6th Gen (20KHCTO1WW), all drivers installed via Lenovo Vantage. The battery also appears to have drained quite significantly during 6:55 hrs of Modern Standby, from 94% SoC to 78% (so 16% or 2.28% per hour). In the graph, it shows a red line in that time, indicating "High System Activity". In the details of the standby it states DHCP as the main offender (8%, 33 minutes), but the percentages of the offenders do not sum to 100% (in fact all others have 0%). Edit: powercfg /a reports that S3 is not supported even though I've set it to Windows 10 mode in BIOS. I've also installed the latest BIOS (1.37) to no avail.

I have had this X1 Yoga 3rd Generation laptop since May. Sometime in July the battery will get drained at an excessive rate while the laptop is sleeping. I believe it started to happen after some software/driver/bios update around that time. Overnight it would go from 100% charged to 10% (and stops at 10% becaues hibernation kicks in). See below some images for the SleepStudy that PowerCfg.exe reports.   This seems to be the same or a very similar issue to the one reported here for the X1 Carbon that it is still unresolved:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Carbon-6th-Gen-Battery-drain-in-sleep/m-p/... I have been installing any new updates posted on System Update hoping for this to magically get fixed by one of those updates, but so far it hasn't happened. I'm starting to switch from a happy ThinkPad user that would recommend my laptop to colleagues and friends, to one that may start telling them to stay away from them.

Recently, bought Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Yoga 3rd Gen. Spent a premium price and I am very disappointed with the battery, even after optimization with low brightness. Why are they advertising 15 H?

Hi, It's my second day with this machine, Lenovo just fixed the fan issue luckily the BIOS released the within a day I purchased the laptop (lucky me). Another minor quirk I am noticing, though.  When on battery, the remaining time in XXHrs XXMins keeps fluctuating.  At a point when the battery is more than 80%, it can show 3hrs 38mins, and within a few min, it can jump to 6hrs 46mins and again drop down to 2hrs 20mins all within a matter of minutes. It looks more like a dynamic value that keeps changing based on the load at that instant.  Anyone else noticed this issue?  Or is there a setting I need to tweak?

I bought the X1 Yoga 3rd Gen during the week of Thanksgiving 2018.  I watched a ton of reviews showing the battery getting anywhere from 7-9 hrs of life even though it specs say 15 hours.  7-9 is still acceptable for me but my battery only gets ~2-3 hours of life.  This isn't even the worse part. Like many others my laptop suffers from the dreaded battery drain but seems worse than others.  I seem to not even be able to leave it without the A/C adapter plugged in at night or it will be below 40% by the morning. I have tried many of the "hacks" suggested.  Turned the USB always on OFF and turned the Thunderbolt 3 active at boot up OFF.Neither of those made any difference.  All my Windows power/battery settings (close lid, on power, on battery, etc.) are set to StandBy. I thought about doing a battery gauge reset but have seen horror stories that batteries are screwed up after doing that. Any suggestions for very low battery life relative to specs? excessive battery drain?  TIA,S104S

I'm having an issure with a significant battery drain when the notebook is shut down. In couple of days being switched off and not in use, battery loses around 10-15% or even more. I have tried to disable always on USB in the bios as well as the quick start of Windows 10. It didn't help. I still lose  the battery charge. Specifically to investigate the issure I'm leaving the notebook for few days closed laying around aside and then turning it on. Last time I did it the battery was entirely dry - I received a bios warning with the beep about critical battery level and computer didn't turn on normally untill I pluugged the power cable. This shows that battery charge loss is significant and out of control. Extremely frustrated that such a premium computer I bought for traveling and long-lasting off-home usage has battery issure of that kind and can't provide longevity and service it was bought for.Diagnostic tool shows the battery is almost new, 99% of health. Some screenshots with the battery information are attached. My specs are Windows 10 1903, 256gb 2,5'' SSD, 8GB RAM, i7 5600U CPU. I saw quite a few forum posts about similar issure with other models as well, and there were different bios fixes and updates solving the issure (for the most part). Maybe there is something systematic is going on and must be taken into a closer look and serious consideration? I really hope engineers will investigate the issure and release a fix for that model as well, because... Read more

Hi,I recently purchased Thinkpad X1 yoga (1 Gen) machine with 16Gb Ram, 512GB SSD & WQHD IPS (Not even OLED) display with windows 10 pro 64 bit OS.My laptop battery is draining fast and only last for 4 to 5 hours with normal browsing & usage with 60-75% brightness (even reducing it to 50% doesn't give much improvement) and in Power save mode. As per Lenovo it should last for 9 to 11 hours but in reality it is no where near to it. I had also looked at similar issues that has been raised in this forum by other users as well. But I strongly feel that a top brand like Lenovo/Thinkpad doesn't cheat customers by giving false promises for the battery life of  9 to 11 hours without their internal testing, also I feel they would have not be claiming this (9 to 11 hrs) battery life by keeping their screen brightness to dark i.e. less than 50% or 25%. So i thought i could dig deeper to find out the problem. After my initial analysis using powercfg.exe command tool for sleepstudy, the report (i.e. https://ibb.co/hzob7F) shows me some a Ghost application called "Unknown [None]" which comsumes more power and I guess this is the culprit that cases the battery to drain faster. Looks like this Ghost appid takes around 60% of the power compared with all the other appid.  But not sure how to identify this Ghost appid. I have also posted my query in Microsoft forum but yet to get an reply.https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-othe...
