Help Needed - Lagging And Slow Computer!

Q: Help Needed - Lagging And Slow Computer!

Hello,

I am trying to help out my mother on her computer and considering you guys helped me out on mine, I figured I should come back.

Anyways, the problem with this computer is it has a lot of junk files, folders and things on it, yet I am not sure which files and folders are needed and which are not. Along with that problem, we have the bad lag. Sometimes it takes quite a few minutes to load Windows itself as well as programs.

My mother runs a eBay business and enjoys downloading games and music, so I know that is some cause of the slowing down of her computer.

Attatched is a Hijack This log.

Thank you in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. Post all logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts. If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed. Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean. My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Thanks for your understanding.    Scan with FRST in normal modePlease download Farbar's Recovery Scan Tool to your desktop: FRST 32bit or FRST 64bit (If not sure: Start --> Computer (right click) --> properties)Run FRST. Hello im having problems making my computer run at normal speed. It has been running slow for awhile now but recently VERY SLOW. It takes forever to boot up and any program I open also takes an eternity. Once the program is running it works fine.
I have scanned the computer w/ norton, malwarebytes anti-malware and spybot.
I removed all the harmful files. Spybot seemed to make it run slower.
In the task manager the CPU usage is at 100%. There are about 80 processes when I boot up the system.(seems like a lot)
I uninstalled a bunch of programs I never use to free up some more space and I also tried restoring it to an earlier date.
I gave it the newest updates for windows.
I deleted all the programs I dont need from the start up.
Today I tried running Malwarebytes' anti-malware today and it TIMED OUT!! taskmanager said program was unresponsive.
I'm not sure where to go from here. Do I have to wipe my hard drive??? Please help!!! It is a Sony VAIO laptop.

A:My slow lagging computer

<<I removed all the harmful files.>>

That seems to always be a presumption...by those who get infected. Of course, it's not necessarily true but users seem to like to say/believe it.

I guess that I have to ask...was your system infected?

Any error messages during this troubled period?

I'm not sure what's been happening lately, but my laptop has been running kind of laggy and slow. My specs are as follows:

Windows XP SP2
Intel Pentium M
1.60Ghz
1.12GB RAM
30GB HD (19.1GB Free)
Software: Avast! AV, Comodo Firewall

I initially thought that my computer would only slow after I started Trillian, but I tested this (by not starting Trillian), and it seems it will still slow a few minutes after a restart. Restarting my laptop seems to solve this problem temporarily.

I have run the following programs to test out any problems, but they all come back clean:

Chkdsk
Defrag
Avast virus scan
Spybot S&D
Lavasoft Ad-Aware

Keeping it in safe mode (I'm posting in Safe Mode w/ Networking right now) seems to also keep the problem at bay.

Help?

Thanks!

Hi,

My computer seems to be running slow! So annoying, especially lagging when i'm watching clips or editing. I actually have 1GB of RAM so i'm just wondering if i'm running too many programs because surely that should be sufficient for what i do. Let's remove Panda completely first to see if it alleviates the problem. Make sure you install another antivirus program back though because as of now, you have no antivirus program running...

Download this file and save it on your desktop. Double click on it to run it and follow the directions...that should uninstall Panda completely.

Run tdss killer from http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684
let it cure anything it fnds ( except SPTD.SYS or anything detected as UnsignedFile.Multi.Generic, which should be ignored) & then reboot
post back with its log
By default, the utility outputs the log into system disk (it is usually the disk with installed operating system, C:\) root folder.
Logs have names like: UtilityName.Version_Date_Time_log.txt.
E.g. C:\TDSSKiller.2.4.7_23.07.2010_15.31.43_log.txt

First of all I'm blaming it all on ram since this computer only has 256mb. But anyways it used to be a lot faster (by a lot faster I mean it didn't take 10 minutes to boot up and load everything). I would understand it if I installed a lot of things, but the thing is I barely installed anything and even at that, I didn't install any high memory consuming programs, all I have is basically a kodak program, avast and some hp software. So out of the 40gb I still have like 33 free.

I have scanned with every program I thought off and find no adware/virus/trojans etc. But I still feel there's something not right.

Can anyone tell me if this Hijack log has anything strange. On other news the comp doesn't have the dvd rom installed either. It's not installed in the hardware manager and it obviously doesn't show on the "My computer" tab. It was working when the comp. came out the package, so that's another reason i'm suspecting something gone wrong. Tried deleteling the upper and lower filters and still no dvd rom recognition. I'm going to run a Registry cleaning tool... any recommendations on this?.

So anyway:

Hi,

Below is the HJT Log, could someone please review this. Most of the downloaded programs (O16) on my log are not showing up on my add/remove list. The only program that I still use is Ofoto. If they are not showing up on my add/remove list, then how can I remove these from my computer?

Also, on my add/remove list there is a "BUM" ... I'm not sure what this is and have not seen it on there before. Could someone tell me what this is and if I should remove it?

My computer runs extreme slow and I end up rebooting two/three times an hour. Sometimes there is a lag every few minutes. Most of the time when I reboot my computer I lose my internet connection and need to unplug my cable modem and if that doesn't work, then I reboot again till I get my connection back.

If there is additional information needed, please let me know.

Thank you for your help.
Lisa

Hi guys,

I've recently bought a Dell Inspiron 15 (7548) which has i7-5500U, 16gb RAM, AMD Radeon R7 M265 4GB.

Problem I'm having is that the laptop is laggy and sometimes freezes.

I've noticed the disk usage sits at 100% most of the time.

I've just upgraded it to windows 10 in the hope that windows 8 was causing the issue but it has stayed the same.

Any help with this (as it makes the laptop slower than my 5 year old laptop which I replaced) would be greatly receieved!

Thanks!

Hello

My computer has been running very slow lately and lagging when i I am watching videos on youtube. I looked at the programs I'm running in task manager and saw that something called svchost.exe has been taking up the most memory (40000 or so) when everyhting else is around 20000. Anyways, I ran a DDS scan and a GMER scan. But while running the GMER scan, I got a BSOD saying that a file "pxpdakod.sys" was the problem. Here is my DDS scan:

Whenever I connect external monitor or TV via HDMI the computer is slow/lagging (even moving windows or doing a right click is slow).I tried to isolate the problem and it seems to happen only when I use "Second screen only" or when the laptop lid is closes, if the lid is open and I use "Extend" or "Duplicate" everything's fine. Also, if I do reset while the monitor is still connected, it's working ok (but this is not a good solution for me as I want to keep the work evniornment).I tried playing with Display settings but nothing seems to help, maybe the community can please help me?

Hi and welcome to BleepingComputer The process of cleaning your computer may require temporarily disabliling some security programs. Hello,I recently installed software that apparently contains malware. My computer's symptoms include a little slow on startup, after use of more than 30 minutes the computer becomes extremely slow at doing anything (looking at My Computer in Windows Explorer takes 5 minutes), it freezes (especially Firefox and Windows Explorer) and, in one incident, the computer failed to wake up from sleep mode (lights reactivated but screen was "off" [not black, "off"], no response, repeated attempts to wake it up failed). I have since uninstalled the software to see if it would make a difference, and it has gotten better, but I'd like to make sure that there is no residual malware left over - or if I have spoken too soon.Attached is the Attach.txt and Ark.txt that is required by the preparational page. Hey,

Out of the blue, my computer started getting slow. Sometimes its ok, and then it will be on the verge of freezing.. then get itself back together. I realized, when I start up, it takes FOREVER. It also shows this screen I have never seen before. Its completely black, and has a line of grey rectangles from side to side... and slowly loads across. When it is finally finished(10-15 minutes) it will slowly start up in regular fashion. Any ideas? I will attach a hijack this in my next post.

Thanks Much.

Hi Everyone,

I am running a Windows XP Version 2002 professional machine, with the following specs:
Celeron Cpu 2.40 Ghz
2.41 Ghz, 992 Megs of RAM.

I am running Avast, AVG, Spybot and Malware which I have run to try and find out what is causing my slow down. I have also run "TuneUp Utilities 2006" to see if that would help.
My computer has slowed down quite a fair amount, which makes starting up slow, and also running software like Internet Explorer which on startup is slow.

I have attached a Hijack This log file in the hopes that anyone can help me and put me out of my missery. As you can see I have done my best to try and sort it out myself without much luck.

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

God bless
Peter Gill

This computer is about 6 years old or so, and I'm starting to believe its really not fit for a lot of the things that I do as well as a lot of the layouts and formats of most websites I surf. I think the fact that I use firefox is also a deterrent for performance as well.

What I'm considering is maybe reunstalling my windows, purchasing another OS and installing that one. These choices are mainly what I'm considering under the belief that my computer's hardware isn't the problem.

My final choice is to simply get one of those custom built pcs that are only about 500 but run really well.

So out of those, which should I chose?

In any case, I have an internal harddrive and don't want to lose the files on it. Its an extra HD that I got recently with about 260 gigs free. I'm just unsure about whether or not an internal hd can be used on a new system or a system with it's OS reinstalled.

I would greatly appreciate someone with knowledge of these sort of things providing me with an informed opinion about what to do. Thank you.

A:Advice needed on what to do with slow computer

What are your specs? Processor, ram make a difference on what OS you may go to.
The only alternative you really have is Linux as win 98, although small and fast is very vulnerable with no support anymore and hardly any virus/firewall/antimalware programs compatible.
I see you are on sp1, not good, might be part of your problem as you OS is full of holes.
I have a couple machines I let the kids mess with and they are as old as yours and run
Puppy linux quite well, but you need to study up on it a little first. Do the frugal install
and watch that old pc fly.
This would be dual boot with your existing xp, so if you are going to reinstall xp now is the time to do it. I don't like to run xp with less than 1024 ram but 512 is ok.
You might find you keep xp for games etc and use the pup for the net.
Some prefer to just run it in ram from the live cd and never install, and that will surprise you how well that works too.

Hi,

For the past 3 or 4 days now I have been experiencing slowness with my desktop cpu. The startup time has increased drastically, and disk operations such as deleteing/installing/scanning/etc... are also very slow. Sometimes the computer just freezes and I have to do a hard boot. I suspect malware to be behind this, although it is weird when this first happened was RIGHT after a power glitch, so that may have messed up my HD D: I have done a full scan with my anti virus program (PC TOOLS spyware doctor with antivirus) and nothing comes up.

Hopefully one of you fine gents/gals can help me! :D

***note*** I was unable to fully complete the GMER scan because when it got to the "files" section, it kept on freezing my computer once it got to a particular folder "C:\Intel" so I just skipped it.

Hi there....

I am running Windows xp.
It's been a great computer wihtout virtually any problems until recently.
It' behaving very badly.... Too put it mildly....
Very slow... Lagging...
Takes forever to perform a task and I'm thinking there is a hidden nasty in my computer.

Other than it's slow performance there is nothing else major going on....

I am running Norton 360, which has been great....
I also have run Trend micro and some other online scanners which helped me to remove annoying pop ups.

Can someone help me to see why my computer is running so slow all of a sudden?

Thank's in advance

Hi I'm new! I'm not quite sure what exactly is wrong with my computer. It seems that every time I turn it on it gets slower and slower at loading stuff like say the "my documents". I'm pretty sure I haven't downloaded anything or if I did I wasn't aware it got downloaded. Also, I can't turn off the computer by going to "start" and clicking on the "turn off computer" icon because it freezes.

Ok, I'm working on a HP Pavilion XL918 with the following specs:

1GHz Intel Celeron CPU
256 MB RAM
30GB HDD
Windows XP Home Edition w/ SP2
AVG 8 free edition
Ad-Aware 2007 free edition
Spybot S&D 1.4 (out of date)

The system runs VERY slow and the CPU doesn't stay "pegged" at 100% utilization or anything. So, I'm coming here for assistance with malware identification and removal.

I've already connected the hard drive to a "clean" computer using an external USB HDD enclosure and was able to perform Ad-Aware 2007 and AVG 8 (free edition) scans. In BOTH cases, the scanning application hung or crashed. *Sigh*

I've downloaded HijackThis 2.0.2 from the link in the posting guidelines thread in this forum. Here is the HIjackThis log:

recently my computer has become quite slow and has become unusually noisy (stop-start creeking sound).

can anyone help me please. Thanks in advance.

A:slow and noisy computer. more advice needed.

If your computer/browser seems to be slow, please refer to Slow Computer/Browser? Check here first; it may not be malware. There are reasons for slowness besides malware - i.e. disk fragmentation, disk errors, corrupt system files, too many startup programs, unnecessary services running, not enough RAM, dirty hardware components, etc. As your system gets older it becomes filled with more files/programs and has a natural tendency to slow down so cleaning and regular maintenance is essential.

Hi!
I'm kind of new to this, but I think I've followed the 5 steps correctly (although i couldn't find out how to find the extra.txt-file).

My computer started to act weirdly about three days ago. Almost everytime I watch a movie or a clip my computer slows down really much, and a lot of times it freezes completely, forcing me to reboot. It also happens when I browse the internet, although not as often. Which is why I'm not able to finish the Panda Scan.

Hope you'll understand my not so developed swedish-english, and if you need the extra.txt, please advice me on how to get it. Just getting the main.txt when dss finishes.

My computer that has been working just fine since I built a year ago, just slowed to a crawl yesterday. NOD32 doesn't find anything, Malwarebytes doesn't find anything. Just opening my email program, or a browser, takes a minute or more, or opening any program at all. It's like something is using all my resources, but I don't think anything is. A friend thinks it's a missing or corrupt Windows system file, but I ran the System File Checker, and it didn't find anything wrong.I also did a couple passes with memtest86.
It works fine in safe mode, which I'm assuming rules out hardware. So....no glaring indication of malware, runs fine in safe mode.
I tried system restore also, and it did no good. What was weird about that is, when I selected a restore point, and it restarted, it went to a blue screen, and just hung there. I finally just did a hard shut down, and when it restarted, it had restored to the point I selected. No change though.
A couple times now, when I've restarted it, my desktop will come back up, and I'm still seeing the little spinning blue wheel, a rectangular section in the top left corner of my desktop goes black....and then that goes away after a minute. Pretty strange.
I'm at a loss, and really don't want to reinstall Windows, but that seems to be my only option that I know of.
If anyone can help, or has any suggestions, I'd sure appreciate it.
Thanks in advance!

A:Computer excruciatingly slow, fine in safe mode. Help needed.

1) First please run checkdisk as follows to address any potential issues caused by your hard shutdown:  right-click on a command prompt icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type: chkdsk /r  (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot.

2) Next, let's try a selective startup since the computer runs normally in safe mode:
Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.

Really appreciate if anyone finds the time to help me Thank you in advance.

Since yesterday my computer has turned into a complete mess. I can't open my task manager as the spyware(?) seems to block it. I'm getting constant lagging and freezing. If i try to open up any folders, the windows just freeze. I can however (barely) run my browser.

I tried scanning with Malwarebytes anti malware, and it didn't detect anything. I decided to update it. After the update i can't even open the program now. Some kinda DLL error pops up.

I also tried Bitdefender's online scan, but it didn't detect anything. I'm trying to scan with Avira as we speak, but the whole program seems to be frozen.

I downloaded HijackThis, tried to scan, but some kind of authorization error came up. I closed it and tried running as administrator. Now it keeps telling me that "This program is already running"

Hi all,

I went to use a friends computer the other day and found that the machine was running considerably slower than what it should be running. I ran adaware and removed a bunch of bots, but also found that there were 2020 running processes, which to me seemed beyond excessive. Is there a way to cease running processes that are not needed and keep them from running upon startup? I also ran spybot... Your help is appreciated. thanks.

Hello, I am seeking help regarding the speed of my PC lately. It has been lagging very much these days, much more than it used to. It takes forever to load up the proper window when I simply right click on something for example. I am assuming this is because of cookies / something of that sort that have accumulated on my computer. Does anyone know how to clear these or fix this type of problem? Thank you for your assistance

A:PC Slow/Lagging

Posting your entire system specifications would help a lot! Try to be detailed as possible.
