Y580 Won't Boot on Battery

Q: Y580 Won't Boot on Battery

As many of you know the battery guage reset bricks these laptops. I did it and now my Y580 will not boot with battery power alone. The battery charges and works, but if I boot straight from the battery without AC plugged in, the laptop will turn on for a moment then shut off. I tried removing the battery, holding the power button, etc. Even reset the BIOS to defaults. Does anyone have a fix other than replacing the laptop? My warranty is out.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello, I need a new battery for My Y580, after a long and frustrating search online it seems that nobody sells the original 6700 mah battery. So I went looking for alternative soloutions and I found this ThinkPad Battery 75+ (6 Cell) it is visually and size wise identical to mine. Now the question is: will it work with my Y580 as in the long list below the description, mine (Model no 20132) is not listed compatible. Thank you

Hi, so this problem only came in recently but after I try to update windows 10 on my Y580 and tried to power it up the system would not boot. It seems the laptop is running and the keyboard lights are on but the screen itself remains off or black. The first time it has happen I have been able to use the "remove battery" method to where I remove it and re-insert it back in, this has work the first time when I had this issue but when I had to update windows 10 again the issue returned and I have tried the "remove battery" method but to no avail. I was hoping to get some clarity with this issue, thank you.

Hi, I know there have been numerous threads on this, but each case is slightly different, not to mention that I've tried most of solutions described there and they didn't work. I reinstalled Windows 8 system on my Y580 (using OneKey Recovery). Worked ok after. Then I proceeded to apply all the system updates from Windows Update and some driver updates. After that I restarted the laptop to apply changes and the system stopped booting. The HDD is detected. The boot menu at the beginning only had EFI Network 0 for IPv4 and EFI Network 0 for IPv6 and both failed boot. Later the Windows Boot manager appeared at the top but it also fails each time. After the failed boot it then proceeds to show the OneKey Recovery screen again. When I use it, it works, but after reinstallation it's the same - failed boot and OneKey recovery. When I use a bootable USB installation of Win 8.1 (there's none for Win 8 apparently) and try to repair/reinstall etc. that way, I get a message that the disk where Windows is installed is blocked. Any suggestions?

Hi,

I own a Y580-M772CMH 15.6FHD/i7-3610QM/8G/ laptop with Windows 7 and a few weeks ago I used Ccleaner to clean the registry. Like the dumb stupid person I am I did not pay attention to what it was "cleaning".

Next time I booted up my Laptop it failed to start Windows and gave the following message:

Check cable connection!
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM.
No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

So next time I pressed F2 while booting to see:

Boot Device Priority
Internal HDD: SAMSUNG MZMPC064HBDR-000L1
SATA HDD: ST1000LM024 HN-M101MBB
SATA ODD: Optiarc BD ROM BC-5550H
Network Boot: Atheros Boot Agent

To me it looked like I still had both disks working so I put in a Windows ISO before boot to see if I could repair. The System Recovery Options screen showed me no known existing OS on the device.

So I powered down and used One Key Recovery which told me when I clicked to restore to factory conditions that the partition layout has changed.

Finally I used a bootable Partition Wizard and that showed me this:

Note the negative used value at disk 1.
To my layman's eyes it seems like the SSD and HDD, that are normally combined by a Lenovo software Raid are now separate. And something I deleted with Ccleaner by accident caused it (probably).

Main thing is, I actually don't know what the problem is and so don't know how to proceed.

I'm afraid my data is lost to me, which isn't a terrible loss, but am I correct in assuming... Read more

Ran Lenovo diagnostics and Hard drive and SDD (with factory windows 7) both okay, but neither boot.
I am able to start up win 10 from a usb drive (very slow).  Ran repair and asked it to fix problems.  It comes back saying drive is "locked".

Hello everyone, since start of this week my laptop Y580 got issues with booting to OS. Lenovo logo appears and the spinning circle doesnt, then it restarts ... and then once again - logo, restart, logo, restart...  Also, I am unable to get to BIOS, tried pressing F1 F2 DEL od ENTER, nothing works. I followed guide I found on this forum, holding OneKey recovery key while laptop is turned on - then laptop offers option to Enter Bios, so I finally got there and did a Load to setup defaults.. then I restarted system and Windows finally booted. I was kind of scared, so I checked if I have latest Bios version on Lenovo drivers support, and yes I do have.Next day I came from work and situation happened again - guide didnt work so I googled a bit more and found that I need to go to Bios - boot tab - and swap from UEFI to Legacy Support and also UEFI change to Legacy support... I saved changes and after restart Windows booted.OK, but situation appears today again. But right now none of the guides working, it keeps displaying Lenovo logo plus some network things (see screenshot attached). Can someone help me how to fix this issue permanently? Looks like there is something wrong with BIOS/booting proccess, as HDD works fine (when in Windows days before).Dont know what to do. Please advice something. Thanks alot guys.

Last week all of a sudden my Y580 (win 10) laptop started taking 5 minutes to boot up.  Then I noticed when I try to restart the laptop the screen shows restarting message and after few minutes the screen goes black and you can see power is still on but it does not restart so I have to do a hard shutdown.  Same thing occurs when I try to shutdown, it says shutting down and then screen goes blank but power is still on. For both restart and shutdown i have left the computer in that mode for 30 minutes hoping it do something but screen is blank and power button is lit.Other weird things its doing it when I tried to do a system restore it gives me the proper message of opening the restore screen but it just sits there forever.  When I look at the task manager it shows 0% cpu being used for that process.  Same thing happens when I try to uninstall a program, it shows correct verbiage on the screen but nothing ever happens and task manager shows 0% to that task like it attempts to start the processes but then just timeouts but the message never goes away.  I can?t get to boot in safe mode because as I stated the computer never restarts so going to advanced options is useless and I have tried rebooting from that option.  I also get into safe mode after a hard shutdown, it just boots all the way thru.I have already removed the battery and power cord and pressed the power button for 30 seconds and that accomplished nothing.  As i stated earlier thi... So I have a Lenovo Y580 Ideapad I bought circa 2013/14. I've kept it pretty updated and all since then. It had Windows 8 last time I was able to use it (a few months now sadly). Before this incident, it had already happened before but it would come back on after a few tries. One time it took a whole week of trying to turn it on and off and finally it just popped up again. But this previous time I accidently let it die (I always had it charging once this issue began because I was afraid it would die and do this) and it hasn't been able to boot. I've researched this issue and I've not been able to find one specific answer. So I decided to come here and have some seasoned techs look at my issue personally. I uploaded some videos on youtube in order for you all to get a look at it and what it does when I poke around at it. Also, Idk if it would be of any relevance, but before it died it had had a long standing issue of the touchpad not working. Occasionally it would twitch or work for a few minutes but it was mostly dead (the touchpad I mean). I was never able to fix it (also I just got lazy and bought a mouse). Here is video #1 so you get a basic idea of **bleep** it's doing: https://youtu.be/FwVumwp7MFAHere is video #2 of me poking around on it and doing the restart power thing (thass tha technical name right?) so you can see what it does and doesn't do:https://youtu.be/FwVumwp7MFAIf there is any more info I can give please let me know. All, Very strange thing going on, and I've not seen it on these forums, so here I go. Turn on laptop, the HP screen appears, and about 20 minutes later, Windows starts loading.Turn off laptop, pull the battery, turn on the laptop, and Windows starts loading within 10 seconds (normal). When the battery is in, EVERYTHING takes 15-20 minutes to start.  If I select F2 for settings, it takes that long.  If I hit F10 (or possibly F8), same delay.      If I take the battery out, it works perfectly. So....I of course assume bad battery......but I've never seen this type of behavoir in ANY computer previously. Any suggestions?HP G62-340US Notebook Windows 7 Home PremiumNo error message and no changes made to system. Thanks Donlen

then...

'Do you want to start windows normally or go to recovery?

Recovery mode
Start repair environment (doesn’t do much)
Reinstall windows

Do you think I have corrupted the Bios and need to get a external floppy drive (or flash drive) to reinstall it?

Hi,
I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you. You can follow the steps below:
Drain the residual power of your computer and recaliberate the battery by following the steps below:

Power off your computer.
Remove all the external peripherals  (printers, scanners or any other USB device) connected to your computer.
Please remove the AC adapter and battery of your computer.
Press and hold the power button of your computer for 10-15 seconds to drain the residual power.
Release the power button
Keep the battery out for atleast 2 - 3 hours.
Then insert the battery and charge it overnight with the system powered off.

Hi, all, first post here, so bear with me. I've had this Y580 for a few years now, and it's been functioning rather nicely throughout, just with consistently high temperatures. A few days ago, the performance abruptly dropped considerably, and so I checked my temperatures. They were absolutely ridiculous, even for what this thing averages; I was doing around 95 degrees on the GPU, and it was eternally downclocking to 135MHz. I thought it was just a cooling issue at first, and tried everything, but then when playing around in Energy Management, I noticed something really strange. If I hit the dust removal button, the fan wouldn't change in sound at all. In fact, I could barely hear the fan. I opened up the back cover and inspected the fan. While it was running, it was running at a ridiculously low speed, and would not speed up no matter what I was doing. This is a serious issue; have any of you encountered this before? Anyone have good suggestions for how I should go about dealing with this?

A:Y580 Fan Malfunction

Hi ThunderBIrd2678 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Manual cleaning using compressed air can , checking the gears itself if there are strands slowing it down and reapplying thermal paste ensuring contacts are good as initial step.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the energy manager tool from the support site  under power management can help.

Since fan system is still mechanical in nature, as wear and tear may now be affecting its performance, you may decide on replacing it if you have neccessary tools and skills using the manual (page 58) as guide.
Thermal module with fan in item 11 page 78 FRU number as compared the parts look up for the part number .

Hope this helps answering your query.

Regards

I' ve been experiencing problems with graphics in my Y580 laptop ( i7 3630QM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M 2GB, 8GB RAM ) for about 3 months now ( bought it 3 years ago ). GPU, after reaching about 75 degrees, freezes showing errors:https://scr.hu/zkZzKJhttps://scr.hu/ZM8dk2This errors occur with games - CS:GO and applications - 3DMark. So far i tried:-downclocking-using different nvidia settings-installing different OS ( WIN 7, 8.1, 10 )-upgrading and downgrading drivers ( i' ve noticed that driver versions below 350 are forcing BSODs Dmp, and versions above 350 are giving errors i mentioned earlier) Is my GPU dying? Or maybe it's motherboard fault?

Y580, Win10 I just purchased a used Y580 cheap because it has non-functional USB 3.0 ports. The USB 2.0 port works fine. When I plug in a USB cable, it doesn't register anything, as if there's no power to the ports. Which leads me to believe it's not a driver issue...but I could be wrong about that. My thought was that the controller on the motherboard might be bad, but I don't know much about laptops, honestly. I'm more of a desktop guy when it comes to hardware. I'm not even sure if the USB controller is onboard or a separate board in the laptop. Any ideas on how to fix this, or am I just out of luck? Thanks. - Brian

I have an Ideapad Y580 with a 32 gb SSD and a 1TB HDD. I tried to upgrade to Windows 10 but it failed so I had to do a clean install. I'm trying to go back to Windows 7 since Windows 10 is somewhat glitchy on my computer (I already updated all the drivers). Since it was a clean install, I don't have the "Go Back to Windows 7" option in Windows Recovery. I made a system image just prior to installing Windows 10. I also have a Windows 7 Repair Disc but when I try to boot with it I get a message that says the version is not compatible with the version of Windows I'm trying to repair. Resetting the PC only gives Windows 10 as the target operating system. I tried calling Lenovo support but gave up after 10 minutes on hold and my warranty is expired anyway. Is there any way for me to get back to Windows 7? Or is there a convenient way to get installation media from Lenovo to go back to Windows 7 with the OEM partitions? I was hoping to avoid purchasing the $130 Lenovo "Complex Services" (I'm not even sure if it would solve my problem). Any help is much appreciated Thanks.

My front left USB 3.0 ports stopped working a few days ago.  They can still provide power via a USB to Micro USB adapter cable, but will not recognise or power my mouse or headset. My device manager indicates that my Intel(r) USB 3.0 Extensible host controller cannot start (code 10).  I've tried reinstalling this driver, but that didn't sovle the problem. My rear right USB 2.0 port functions regularly.  My front right USB 3.0 port does not work because it has been physically damaged. I'd really like to have at least 2 functional USB ports to work with.  Can anyone help me figure out what's wrong with my left ports, or how I could replace the right front port?  Thanks.

I am turning to the community to find out if anyone has installed 16GB of memory in their Y580. Lenovo's manual and website says that 8GB is the maximum supported, but some posts have indicated that it might support 16GB. I need to hear from someone who has actually tried 16GB of RAM in their Y580 as to whether it worked as this is the only thing holding me back from purchasing the Y580.

According to Crucial on their site the max is 8 GB for the Y580 And since Lenovo says the same,i would go with that. However i would be interested to hear otherwise.

First off I would like to say that I very much enjoyed my laptop right up until last night. I had the machine since early 2013 and it worked great, best laptop for gaming I have ever used. However I noticed that the last few months the battery cannot hold a charge (for menial tasks) and the fan or gpu was making an odd noise under load. This began to bother me so I took it upon myself to do a battery gauge reset, to see if maybe the battery was just mis calibrated. After this I decided to check the fan and clean out any dust from the vents and inside the fan, as I've noticed it having to work harder than normal under load, and Temps have been higher than normal. I put everything back together, put the motherboard back in, and plugged everything back into the motherboard, but now the laptop won't turn on. What's weird is I have done this a few times before and the laptop has always been fine. This has really bummed me out, I really liked this laptop. Now I don't have a computer to play games on or do anything. I also rely on the laptop for school. I am not sure what to do. I am guessing that the problem lies in the motherboard, and I know the laptop is out of warranty as I have had it awhile. Any idea how much it would cost for a repair like this? I am a poor college student and I don't know that I could even afford a repair let alone a new computer. Why I am frustrated: thing is, about 2 years ago I got a keyboard bezel replacement from Lenovo and sen... Hello, As stated in the title, I have a Lenovo IdeaPad y580. I purchased it approximately three-and-a-half years ago, and only now is it really beginning to chug durings its processes. Point is, I want it to last perhaps another half year or so while I finish saving up for another computer. As a gamer, I'm fine with the limitations of the GPU, but sometimes my laptop legitimately has issues processing stuff, such as loading Google Chrome properly. I know enough about Windows to clean out viral matter and uninstall programs that I don't use that are running in the back. But does anyone have any tips or tricks to make this hunk of junk last maybe six more months before it becomes unusable?TL;DR I need to make my laptop run at least a reasonably sub-average to average level for six more months. Any tips are appreciated.

I started monitoring my hard disk a while back when I was having lots of problems. It was running quite hot and the SMART data showed it was on the edge of failure. I replaced the disk with a new one (Seagate ST2000LM007), and almost immediately it started showing high temperatures as well. Within 30 minutes of power-up doing nothing more than reading email and web browsing, the disk will reach and exceed 50°. The fan is working, but seems pretty anemic. I've blown out dust and checked for obstructions, but nothing changed. I really don't want to toast another disk. (I've checked other laptops and temperatures seem to peak at 35°C). Device manager shows Lenovo ACPI-Compliant Virtual Power Controller, v 5.4.0.1Running Win 7 Pro, all updates installed. In addition to the Seagate disk listed above, there is a 256G mSATA SSD installed.

Hello there,I got some issues here with my Lenovo IdeaPad Y580.I was about to give it a new clean installation of Windows 8.1.Finished, it didn't recognize the HDD I installed it on. So I tried to change the boot priority in the BIOS but it seems like I messed up pretty bad. When I start the laptop now it says: "check cable connection! PXE - MOF: exiting intel PXE ROM" It seems like it tries to boot from a server now, as I read in other forums.Excuse my dangerous half knowledge, I am no expert at all.So the bad thing is that my laptop is stuck in that loop, it would restart and the same message appears. I can't enter the BIOS, I tried F1, F2, FN+F2, F12.I read about it in other forums and posts, I took out the HDD and the SSD, pressed B while starting the laptop.I took out the battery pack, held the power button for a minute.I even dissembled the whole laptop to remove the battery of the motherboard, just to figure out it's not possible to remove the battery on that particular motherboard. So yeah, I tried everything I could find online and I don't know what else to do. Maybe try and external keyboard? But the keyboard seems to work, as when I hit fn+f2 the screen goes black, which is the appropriate shortcut. Can anyone of you help me out? I don't know what else to do. I appreciate any help and comments.Thank you!

I had to re-image my Y580 as WIndows 7 somehow got corrupted.  One key recovery failed so I spent $60 for recovery media.  That was a painful, time consuming process as it took over an hour to install from the media and then SEVERAL hours installing all the Windows updates as the media installs an ancient version of WIndows 7.  I decided to image the C drive after all the Windows updates were installed so if I ever needed to re-image again it would be a much faster process.  I imaged all 4 partitions to an external drive with Maxium Reflect.  I then decided to try restoring the C drive image to make sure it worked.  Bad idea.  After restoring the image, my Y580 would no longer boot and I had to start all over again with the recovery media.  I suspect the SDD drive setup somehow makes normal image restore an issue. Questions:1.  Has anyone come up with a way to successfully image and restore the C drive?2.  Is there a way to update the OKR partition with new image of Windows 7 with updates installed? Thanks,-Chuck

Hey everyone, I have a question regarding my Ideapad Y580 and a strange sound error I have been experiencing over the past few months. Windows 8.1 Pro w/ Media Centeri7 3630QM8GB RAMGTX660M500GB Samsung EVO 840 Ok here's the sound issue.  After using a program such as Minecraft, VLC, Nightingale, the sound will completely cut out.  When checking volumes, sound will not register.  Oftentimes, the sound control panel will say the device is busy. Things I've tried so far:1) Disabled Realtek Digital Output2) Installed latest driver3) Checked current processes for remnants of programs using the sound card.. nothing. Sometimes when I have one of the programs open, for example playing minecraft, when I start a video in VLC, there will be no sound.  The only sound comes from the game. The only thing that really restores the audio is a full restart of the system.  Logging out and back in will not restore the sound.Has anyone experienced this issue?  Is there a way to fix this problem?  Thanks guys!

A:Ideapad Y580 sound cutting out

One suggestion..... have you tried uninstalling the audio driver, reboot the computer and then install a fresh copy of the driver.  If the previous driver installation was faulty, installing the latest driver may have not corrected the problem.

This may sound like an odd request, but is there a way to disable the touchpad buttons from moving the mouse, but still have them work when they're pressed? Here's what happens...I'm using the touchpad and I hit the left button and it moves my mouse pointer a little.  But I don't want it to move. I just want to press the button without my touching it causing the pointer to move a little. It really screws with some things I do.

Is there any solution to this? If not, can I buy a completely different touchpad?

Thanks

- Brian

Does anyone actually know if the "Dust Removal" in the energy management program actually works to remove dust from the laptop? I'm a bit reluctant to open up and dissect my laptop to check for any dust accumulation at this point, since everything has been running fine. This question came to mind since I saw that the filter at the bottom of my laptop was kinda caked in fine dust - wondered if the same was inside my laptop. I got the laptop in December 2012.

A:Dust removal in Ideapad Y580

hi marshchen,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

That application can only minimized collection of dust in the Exhaust system of your Laptop.
Since the process of the vents is to get air fom the outside to pass through the heatsink . Dust collection cannot really be avoided.

One symptom of a fan and vent dust is that when the vents blow very hot and minimal air and the laptop is heating up more than usual.

A yearly cleaning would be ok.
You can refer to the Maintenance Manual of this model on how to open the cover and get to the heat sink.
You might also want to refresh and apply new Thermal paste to the Heat sink.

Just be careful on the plastic parts and also wear an anti static starp. If you're not comfortable doing this, You can opt to have a repair center do this.

Best Regards
Solid Cruver

Greetings! While I do understand that on Y580 there is no hardware button available for the thermal management software, I do not understand why this software is not included in the drivers. To use it, should I install the energy management drivers for another Y model? Is that recommended at all, or are there risks? Please advise on how I can enable thermal management safely for my IdeaPad Y580. If that cannot be done, please give instructions on setting up SpeedFan or some other fan control software. Thank you. Best regards,S
