Failed installation of printer drivers in Win 7

Q: Failed installation of printer drivers in Win 7

This is actually a 'sticky', so I'll leave it up to the administrator to move it.

Over many years, I have accumulated a fair amount of knowledge about Windows computers and have become the "tech support guy" for a number of friends. Problem is, they tell their friends and the latter call me about their problems. As you can see, this can turn into a geometric progression, so I started charging for fixing their problems.

One of those paying customers recently had a problem with his 4-yr.-old Acer laptop: It suddenly stopped connecting to the Internet (via an Ethernet cable). To make a long diagnostic story short, it turned out that lightning had struck a tree on the next-door neighbor's property, and it fried his Comcast modem. Comcast replaced the modem, but the computer still would not connect. The reason: Enough of the lightning had made it past the modem to fry the onboard Ethernet chip. All other functions of the computer worked, which I found bizarre. If lightning makes it to the motherboard, the entire board is usually fried.

While the wireless capability of the computer still worked, it was a low-end laptop and the OS was Vista. I gave him the choice of (a) buying and installing a router and connecting wirelessly or (b) give the laptop to his grandson, who needed one, and put the $$ he would have spent on a router into a new Win 7 laptop. He opted for (b).

In his search for a new laptop, he came upon a flat bargain: A Toshiba with an AMD quad, 6GB RAM, 17.3" screen, Windows Experience Index of 5.8, for $499. After buying it, he gave it to me to configure.

The problem: He has an HP PSC 1315 all-in-one printer. After returning the configured computer to him, he could not print anything. That is, when he plugged the printer in, Windows failed to load the drivers to make the computer work. I tried downloading and installing the full driver file (360MB) with his Avast AV disabled. Failed. I finally concluded that something that loaded at startup might be blocking the installation, so disabled all startup files and all services, except the basic MS files using msconfig, then tried the installation again. Successful!!

A pox on both their houses Toshiba and HP. There is no way the average computer user could have figured out how to successfully install the HP driver. Toshiba and HP should have anticipated that some service or startup program would make it impossible to install at least some printer drivers, and issued specific warnings about which programs/services could cause the problem. They didn't.

So, if you have a problem getting an HP driver installed on your Win 7 Toshiba, try disabling all but the basic MS services, and all startup items, then running the installation.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi guys, have spent a lot of time unsuccessfully installing an old HP deskjet 560c printer to my old windows 98 system. I inherited both from different people so don't have the MS systems disk but do have HP floppy. managed to get the 560c added as printer but when I tried to print I got the message: "Data is being sent to printer & printer is not responding. the printer is on and the ready lights are lit.

I'm using the cable to connect the pc and the printer that came with an old hp laser series II and it fit. neither microsoft nor hp has been of any help and i have exhaused my limited knowledge and am very frustrated. can you walk me through this? I have a home based business and rely on my printer for a living - can't afford a new system yet. Any hope? thanks a lot!

I have bought this notebook just yesterday and I found out that the wifi was super slow and unstable. So I tried (using an external adaptor) to download some other drivers and now the wifi connection works fine. Today I got new updates from the support assistant, that I have downloaded but that I can't install because it gives me error and fails. What should I do? Is it normal that I paid 800 euros for a latop that cannot connect to internet properly and that cannot install the "necessary" updates? I got a Realtek and Windows 10. I have restarted the laptop. Nothing works. I hope you have a solution for this, I am thinking to throw it from the window.

Hello and welcome:

We could probably provide better help if we had a wee bit more information...

A few basic questions:
Is this the Win7 Home Premium, 64-bit laptop listed in your forum profile?
What is the full MODEL NUMBER of the HP printer?
How are you trying to connect the computer to the printer -- local (USB), network (wired/Ethernet) or network (wifi)?
Have you had a look at this article >>HERE<< about "fatal errors" (scroll down to see the part about 2753 codes)? (This is a US URL. I hope you are able to see the information from your locale.)

Thank you for the information, if you can please provide it,

Hi,
I need help fixing failed installation of drivers for a NIKON DSC COOLPIX L12-PTP digital camera.

I attached the USB cable and camera to my PC and got options. I chose Locate and install driver software. A window soon appeared with the message:

Windows found driver software for your device but encountered and error while attempting to install it.

Digital Still Camera

The account specified for this service is different for the account specified for other services running in the same process

There was no number assaciated with the error message.

I then tried to figure out after opening Task Manager as Administrator what the services are that should all be associated with the same account in the same process. The only process that I could see that seemed like it might be the appropriate one is NKMonitor.exe (PID 2636). I right clicked on it and then on go to services, but there was nothing highlighted to show any related services.

I opened the file location of the process and it was C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nikon\Monitor\NKMonitor. This is a program I downloaded a few days ago from Nikon's website to try and fix the problem I'm having with driver installation. I couldn't find the drivers for my camera on their website.

Can anyone tell me how I can find out what the process is that's associated with installation of the camera drivers? How do I find what all the services are that are running in that process?

I don't recall running into that error message. I see you have HP. I've had a string of them and found this forum to be excellent:

HP Business Support Center

It says "business" but it's not paid support. It's users answering questions like here. Just everyone on there has had HP machines for some time.

My inclination would be to uninstall the original software. But before doing too much I would try the HP support site. It also has all the original software, drivers, user manuals that came with the PC if it's a standard package.

Registration is free and when I signed up they accepted hotmail as an email with no complaints.

edit: that said you may get a good answer here still. The HP site is good to have in your bookmarks in any case.

I was trying to install a Dell laser printer onto someones laptop with Windows 2000. Towards the end of the installation, the computer rebooted due to a bad battery and the AC was accidently unplugged. Now right when I get into Windows before the login screen, the computer just reboots and I can barely see a flash of a STOP BSOD error but don't have any time to read it. I can get into safe mode and do stuff. I tried reinstalling the software and drivers but it gives me an error. I can't uninstall anything because it doesn't see anything installed. What can I do? Its a USB printer BTW. This is sort of an emergency thanks.

Hello Folks...........

My C: drive recently started giving me HD521-2W error when I ran "PC Doctor 5 for Windows" diagnostic multiple times in the past few weeks.

I created backup images of both the partitions on this 320 GB HD ( Active partition named "HP_Pavilion" and Primary partition named "HP_Recovery") onto an external USB drive using Macrium Free edition.

I later took PC to a PC repair shop and installed a new 320 GB WD hard drive. However, he DID NOT create 2 partitions as the old drive BUT he made this new drive bootable and downloaded all the necessary drivers.

My questions are :

# 1 ) Is there a tool or an utility I can use to download all the drivers CURRENTLY installed on the old hard drive onto a CD/DVD for later Clean Install of XP?

# 2) How can I make this new hard drive look exactly like the old drive - I mean, it must have 2 partitions using Macrium backups images I already created ?

I hope, I explained this situation to best of my knowldge and created least amount of confusion.

Thanks in advance for your help.

When I tried to install a new Canon Pixma ip6220D printer on my Sony Vaio Windows XP Media Edition w/ SP2 desktop I receive an error that the computer cannot detect the printer after I hook-up the USB cable to the computer from the printer. This is after a balloon dialog appears in the system tray noting that new hardware was found - the hardware being a Canon ip6220D. The Canon software notes that it could not detect the printer and that there was a printer driver failure. Eventually a Windows error box appears noting that an error occurred installing the new hardware.

I have the same problem with a printer that previously had no problems. That printer is a HP Photosmart 3210xi.

I ran malware check using Threat Fire 3 which didn't find anything.

I have tried different USB ports with no success. I have tried USB ports that other devices use with no success.

Any suggestions on how to attack this problem would be appreciated.

My Mom has an HP laptop. She recently purchased a new HP printer and I have been trying for the last 4 days to get it to install/connect. I've been in touch with HP but the links they provide aren't resolving the issues.

First, using the CD that came with the printer: hangs up at around 85-90%. It doesn't not show up as installed. I copied the CD to the desktop, modified Setup.exe in CFFExplorer and Run as Administrator and it appears to completely install; however, when I go to Device Manager, it says no driver is found. I sometimes have the option to update and sometimes that seems to work but I can't access it through Add a Printer (which has the green bar run across the top, then pulsate and freeze).

Trying to install using the driver I download from HP results in no installing screen appearing but it does hang up in the background and the only way to stop it is to Restart. The same thing happens if I try to use HPs Wizard.

I've installed several HP printers through the years and not had this much trouble. That doesn't even include the dozens of times I've had to reinstall my own HP printer because of its contrariness!

Additionally, attempts to uninstall the old printer results in it hanging up/freezing soon in to the process, whether I try to uninstall from the Start menu, file or Uninstall program. I'm not even being able to get the Windows Updates to install - that process also just hangs up/freezes. FYI - I've not checked her machine in a while so there are ma... Read more

A:Unable to install printer drivers, uninstall old printer, update Windo

Hi columbia93, welcome to 7F!

Printers are touchy animals, when installing any printer you have to follow the install procedures exactly as described by the manufacturer.

This may be the root cause:

Quote:
FYI - I've not checked her machine in a while

Not that you haven't been able to check it, but there may be an accumulation of problems on your Mom's machine that also are stopping the update process.

I am trying to find one of 7F's tutorials on improving performance of a computer, but it boils down to cleaning out all detritus that a machine can accumulate of a period of time.
I did find this but there is another one: Hard Disk Space - Free Up and Recover The first three options would help

Run Antimalware/virus scans, run a Check Disk then a sfc /scannow then try to uninstall that old printer driver, and if that works shut down the machine, and try to install the printer without the HP disk, when it looks, but asks if you have the disk say no and allow the OS to install what it has.
It is my understanding that HP Printer drivers already come with Windows 7.

But do the cleanup first and see if that helps.

I use Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. My problem is: Whenever I try to print something (word, pdf, or any other file); printer spooler stops working and when I check the “Devices and Printers” all the printer drivers seem to be disappeared.

I checked the “Print Spooler” in the “Services” tool; and set the "Recovery after subsequent failures" option to “Restart the Service”. Therefore all the printer drives coma back after 1 minute. However the spooler stops immediately again when the uncompleted printing job starts; hence I can not print anything more than a page.

Hi guys,

Kind of annoying problem here... I have an HP LaserJet 1200 hooked up via USB to a Mac that is running 10.5 (Leopard). For the printer's first 5 years or so everything was great. I could get new computers set up to print to the printer with no troubles, until recently.

Recently, I upgraded my computer to Windows 7 and wanted to get the printer working again. I attempted to install the printer using the HP LaserJet 1200 PCL 6 printer drivers. It connected to the printer alright, but every time I printed it came out with a PCL XL Error: "Error: UnsupportedProtocol" instead of my document.

Now, every time I try to connect a new computer (Windows 7 or Windows XP, doesn't matter) the printer automatically installs the PCL 6 driver for the printer... which always prints out an error instead of the document I want. I can't find a way to manually choose the driver when I'm adding it because it's a network printer, not one that's locally hooked up.

I tried installing the PCL 5 driver manually, but the printer still ONLY wants the PCL 6 driver that gives me the errors. I tried to go to "Server Properties" while in Printers and Faxes to roll back the PCL 6 driver, but Windows can't find a driver to roll it back to.

Now, if I physically hook the printer up to the computer via a USB cable, it installs the PCL5 Driver and it works... but that's only when it's plugged directly in.

Hi,

I work in IT doing Help Desk/Support for a company.

We want to give standard users restricted assess to a printer. If they are a manager they can print in colour, but if they are just a standard staff member they only get the option to print in black & white.

An example would be using a black & white driver for a colour printer. People who print to the Black & White device driver won't have the option for colour.

Is this possible and how so using Windows 10 & 7.

Thank you.

A:Creating two different printer drivers on the same printer?

I'm a Windows 7 person, however, perhaps I can give an educated guess. For the managers, create a color printer using the printer's provided drivers [or let Windows Update get them]. For the standard user, create a black and white printer coming as close to the specs of the color printer as possible. Let's say Zumba 2000A is the color printer. Give the managers Zumba 2000A. Give the standard users Zumba 1000A, the black and white printer. You will need to test from standard users' computers to see if this idea will work for each standard user. For a different reason, I did that once. I "created" an HP Laser Series II "printer" [which WU generously supplied the drivers for] , then installed my Brother HL-1440 [again WU generously provided the drivers for this printer also]. Solved my printing problem. Awhile later, finally, I was able to jettison both printers and just install the Brother printer correctly.

Hey everyone,

I have been trying to figure this out for a few days now, and I have pretty much given up, so hopefully someone here can help.

I am trying to dual boot my desktop with Win 7 and 8. So I wrote the Win 8 iso to my flash drive, booted up from it. It installed to the partition I made happily, rebooted, and showed the select OS screen. When I clicked the Windows Dev Build option, it pulls up the configuration screen, saying something along the lines of "Getting Devices Ready (some number)%". When it gets to this point, it gets up in the high 70s and 80s, then the screen goes black, the system reboots. At this point it goes through my BIOS stuff, then straight to a black screen. No option to pick an OS or anything.

I have tried this with 2 different downloads of the ISO and the same thing happened. I am trying it on my laptop now to see if it could be my desktop being dumb, but does anyone know what could be causing this?

My set up is just a basic one. One hdd, ASUS motherboard, gtx 560 gfx card. Could it just be the computer? Or did I do something wrong? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me

A friend gave me a laptop, my problem is that it came from Japan thus everything is japanase thus I can't hardly use it. The reason I accept it is bcoz he said I can try to reinstall a win xp with english version (btw, the OS is win xp pro in japanase version). Thus I bought win xp pro sp2 and try to reinstall it, so I reboot fm cd rom and while the windows setup is starting, the system stopped and the message on my screen read as:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer, resume any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers, check your hard drive to make sure it is porperly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK/F to check hard drive corruption. then restart computer.

...now my other problem is that, how in the world I can follow the above steps if everything written on it are in japanase language? I also try to visit the manufacture's website, thinking that perhaps it help solve the problem but....i also need a japanase translator to understand it.

I would appreciate your help regarding this matter. Thank you.

Initial setup did not complete and error'd out with error code 9c59 when using windows update.
My system now thinks that IE 10 is installed but it is not.
Looking in "Turn Windows Features on or off" it shows "Internet Explorer 10"
Looking in "View installed updates" it shows "Windows Internet Explorer 9"
Looking in the CBS.log I see the following entries when I try to re-install IE 10

I also have tried to install a technet version of Windows 7. This failed.

My rig is as follows:
Pentium D945PSN with Pentium D 2.8GHz
Gigabyte Nvidia 9800 GTX+
4GB RAM
Dual monitor setup

I have attempted to upgrade from Vista 64 bit, and upon failure, I have tried clean installs thereafter.

The upgrade and every fresh install gets to the "Completing installation..." phase, goes about 30 seconds to a minute, the screen then flashes to black, and the setup crashes. Upon a restart, the setup reads an error message stating that setup encountered an error and must be restarted.

I had a copy of windows 7 beta (v7.0), and proceeded to install that. It worked perfectly. Installed in a half hour.

Versions of Windows 7 RTM attempted and downloaded multiple times, burned with different burners as well:

Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (two different copies)
Windows 7 Ultimate x86 (two different copies)
Windows 7 Professional x64
Windows 7 Home Edition x64
Windows 7 Home Edition x86

I have tried updates, clean installs, and those clean installs varied in adding a full 1TB partition vs two 500MB partitions.

The rig was fully working with Vista x64, with no errors, and is currently running with the beta.

Any advice?

Since there are no error lines in the CBS.log, it doesn't appear that is of much help.

Can you fine any logs such as setupact.log or setuperr.log. They may be in a \Panther directory in the primary Windows folder, or possibly in a hidden folder named something like C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther\

These may or may not help, but that is all I can suggest. If you decide to attach the logs, go through them and make sure no personal information is shared.

Before you run the update, try disabling any devices you can in the bios or even in the Device Manager. Bluetooth has been involved in some situations.

It seems like there is another file that starts with srt and is related to the Compatibility check, but I can't remember the name.

Has someone an idea?

Thanks in advance.

It happened to me once, I guess it finds some drivers or software that it finds impossible to use after the upgrade and crashes.

Try removing every software you installed and extra drivers too, and try again.

I  have an Inspirion 3250 with a failed hard drive.  I was sent a warranty replacement.  I installed the drive and started up the computer.  It started running through its install, but failed.  I am not sure how far along it was in the process. I was not watching the install, but came back to a window that reads "Windows could not complete the installation.  To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation."
I tried restarting the computer several times and it keeps going back to a black screen with this message.  When I restart it runs through the normal boot manager and goes to the administrator log in screen for Windows 10.  It never lets me select any thing.  It just has a spinning circle like it's trying to load something.
This hard drive was labeled image when it was sent to me.  I don't have any sort of boot drive or image drive to load.
How can I restart the windows installation?
Please let me know if you need any additional information.

Hi everyone,

We have a laptop at work that came with Windows 8. We purchased a digital license for Windows 8 Pro (called Windows 8 Pro Pack) and used this for months. The SSD failed and I received and installed a new SSD. However, the laptop had Windows 8 OEM (no disk) so I am not able to obtain that version of Windows. I tried installing Windows 8.1 Pro from a disk from another laptop however the 8.1 Pro update obviously cannot use the Windows 8 Pro Pack product key. I tried finding an ISO for Windows 8 but all I got was the Enterprise 30 day edition and I am unable to put in my Windows 8 pro license.
I've contacted Acer but they want me to purchase a recovery disk. I've contacted Microsoft and they said I have to ask Acer.
If anyone could pass on their knowledge I would be greatly thankful!

Just FYI - I have the key that the BIOS used with the Acer Travelmate P653 but I am unable to use it as I do not have an installation of that version of Windows. I've tried changing the product key but I am unable to activate either the original Windows 8 key or the upgrade to Windows 8 Pro key we bought.

A:Windows 8 OEM installation on a failed SSD

The Windows 8 Pro key will activate Windows 8.1 Pro - however, as an upgrade key the activation count gets used up with a hardware upgrade, and you will have to phone activate.

If you still have problems please post a diagnostic report from here...

A friend tried to install Norton AntiVirus 2004 on her computer at work. Something went wrong. She then tried to uninstall. Now her computer is totally messed up.

On bootup it shows "Sbserv - This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down."

You can not use Windows Explorer. It gives this error message "Explorer - This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." I click on close and it usually reappears about 6 times. Then Explorer will open. Every attempt to navigate to a different folder gives you the series of 6 Explorer errors.

I can not open folders. Same "Explorer" error messages.

I can not open Control Panel. Same errors.

IE6 will not connect.

I searched Norton's site looking for info on repairing failed installations. I found nothing for 2004. So I downloaded Rnav2003.exe in the hope that it might clean the registry. No luck as it does not support 2004 and wont run.

I went through the registry manually and removed every instance of Symantec. I rebooted. Nothing changed.

The system will lock up occasionally. Ctrl-Alt-Del does not work. You have to hit the reset button.

Formatting the drive and reinstalling is not an option. The drive contains a year's financial data and they can't find their accounting software install disks.

Anyone have any ideas?

Have Toshiba A135-S2276 laptop. Vista installed. Have vista recovery disk. My cyberphobic aunt wanted xp installed so it would be like her old computer.

I've done the following on the laptop: Fdisk, partitioned and formatted hd in FAT32. Started the win xp pro OEM (legal license) install. It recognized the cd and everything was going well until there was a power failure when I was putting in the product code. I tried to simply restart the install and the cd was invalid media. Disk booted up to install menu in my legal win xp desktop. So it isn't totally corrupt.

Laptop hd, fdisk, repartitioned, format and no startup with OEM
Used set of win xp pro floppy disks to start install. OEM still invalid media. Did install with old xp pro, illegal copy. That worked. Unable to read oem. Downloaded and installed all of the win xp toshiba drivers. Had to search for the drivers as toshiba doesn't post them.
Surprise! Everything worked except Realtek high definition audio device. No other device listed. Turns out that the Realtek high def driver needs sp2 to work. OEM still invalid so upgrading the system isn't possible.

These are the options as I see them or hope would happen.
Fool the realtek device to accept a different driver.
Disable the device and come up with another option.
Buy the sp2 cd but it probably wouldn't be happy upgrading an illegal copy of xp.

Hello. I recently encountered a problem on Windows 8 regarding DirectX driver installation for both the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer and the DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010). The files included in the installers are needed for DirectX 9.0c based applications.

Upon attempted installation of the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer the following error occurs: "A cabinet file necessary for installation cannot be trusted. Please verify the Cryptographic Services are enabled and the cabinet file certificate is valid."

Even though both errors are different in their descriptions of the error I believe that the same issue is causing both. To save time answering questions back and forth:

To let you know how helpful Microsoft is about the issue, they directed me to those exact downloads to solve the problem; and over the phone 'Mark' constantly reminded me that Windows 8 uses DirectX 11 and not DirectX 9 and that maybe Garry's Mod is not compatible with Windows 8 when it was working fine the other day before I formatted all my hard drives. So I have given up on them and moved here.

For anyone wondering why I need DirectX 9 files:
DirectX 9 and DirectX 10 are needed for various video games, even if you have DirectX 11 some games do require that they have the appropriate DX9 DLL files in order to run, regardless of the version of DirectX installed.

Greetings All !

I tried to install WinXP Pro on a 1 Gbyte ThumbDrive and it failed. So now, everytime I boot to the C:\ drive, I have to manually select the WinXP installation instead of the failed Setup Installation.

I read a Microsoft Bulletain that said to access the boot.ini file via "My Computer\Properties\Advanced", but that didn't work. It seemed that the system found the "\boot.ini.backup" file and restored the "\boot.ini" file.

So next I re-did the process and this time I deleted both copies of the "boot.ini.backup" files that I found.

But it still didn't work.

I read a http://www.tech-recipes.com/_tips1286.html about an uninstall .exe file in the "\windows\system32" directory that is supposed to delete unwanted installations, but when I ran that (from the command line) it said that there was a missing file and it couldn't do it's thing.

So now I am stuck and without any more ideas. Could someone please help ?

Thanks in advance,

Wally
