Windows XP auto log-off.

Q: Windows XP auto log-off.

For the past few months I've been having problems with my computer, such as slowness, stalling, and every now and then a new kind of malware would pop-up. It started with Anti-virus 2009 pro, and a few recent ones were System Security, Braviax.exe, and Internet Antivirus Pro. I had been successful in getting rid of them with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Spybot. But I guess I only removed them partially because after I got rid of Internet Antivirus Pro, my computer (Windows XP) started having an auto log-off issue. As soon as I select an account from the start-up page to log in to, it shows the desktop's wallpaper for a few seconds before automatically logging off. I am writing this post through my laptop which is fortunately working fine. Is there anyway to resolve this problem?

Preferred Solution: Windows XP auto log-off.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I would like to completely disable auto run / auto play in Windows Media Player 12 on Windows 7, and I cannot find a way to do so. I've searched the web endlessly, and there are lots of suggestions, but nothing works. I have disabled every type of auto run / auto play I can find, but if Windows Media Player is open and I insert a flash drive, CD, or DVD, whatever I'm playing is interrupted by what was inserted even if it's not media. Just a plain, blank flash drive does this.

Has anyone else been able to figure this out?

I have Word 2002, SP3, for Windows Office XP Pro.

My problem is I want to permanently turn OFF the autocorrect options (all of them: correct initial capitals, correct first letters of days, etc etc, autoformat, as well as auto text and auto type).

Yes, I have unchecked all the boxes in Tools > Autocorrect Options, the problem is I have to painstakingly go though all the boxes every time I open Word and uncheck them. My setups are not remembered.

I can't figure out how to make these options stay set this way.

I've tried installing the Office Resource Kit and setting a system policy (though I am the only user on this PC), but no success.

I had to rebuild my system a month ago -- before that, I never had any problems, Word seemed to remember exactly my preferred set up and saved autocorrect options etc to the normal template.

I checked the normal template and it is in Doc Settings folder where it should be.

I searched the forums and Word help but can't seem to find any advice, mainly because most people usually run these options and they only wish to modify the instances where they apply, rather than permanently disable them.

Please help! Much appreciated! Thanks!

You need to check Control Panel, Power Options. (screenshot)

Note the tabs. In this dialog you set your options and they are set for the Power Scheme shown. In Laptops, there are usually 2 schemes listed, one for AC powered and a separate for Battery powered.

Desktop OR AC powered Laptop, the only thing you MAY want to turn off is your Monitor.

Hello everyone. I'd like to know why win7 64bit decides by itself to auto refresh a window minute and literally the next second or two later it does not.
Lets say, I save a pic from the net, just before I go into the browser I already have my downloads folder open. I save a couple pics and I go back to the open folder and the pics are there at the bottom (I sort by date modified). I go back to the browser save another pic or anything, I go back to the folder and the pic or whatever is not there, so i have to refresh myself. I was just in that folder 10 seconds ago I seen no reason for it to not refresh now when it just did it 10 seconds ago. Now, I have not changed any setting regarding this or any explorer action. I can't even find an auto refresh option anywhere.
So how is this possible? What the heck is wrong with this OS?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I must say, I will soon be at my wits end with this OS. I paid $300 to spent more time organizing and moving files around. A lot more time. They have really screwed up explorer this time around. Explorer in XP was essentially perfect (I never even touched Vista on my machines. My wife has Vista). I'm starting to believe that win7 was just a money grab and that of the many problems with this OS will not be fixed in any hotfix or service packs, but win8 will be all better just as long as you spend another $300. A:Explorer windows auto refresh then don't auto refresh. Why?

We have a thread for this kind of thing. I can't find it at the moment. I think unsubscribed from it on accident, but I'm pretty sure its in general discussion. Explorer is working like it always does. It can be annoying that it doesn't always refresh, but I'm sure you can find a pattern, like how many added files it takes or how long it takes to "auto-refresh". The reason you don't here anything bad about Windows 7 is for three reasons. 1) you haven't looked hard enough. There are plenty of news stories with Mac lovers saying its Vista with a new paint job. 2) XP was as unstable as Charles Manson on Crack at the best of times when it first came out. 3) Vista was, well Vista. MS claimed it would run fine on 512MB of RAM, so people were installing it on old computers, and new computer were being bought that were seriously underpowered. When it wouldn't run worth a crap, everyone hated it. Not to mention the incompatibility issues that no one saw between 2000 and XP. If you didn't use Vista at all, the changes do seem a lot more drastic. If you don't like it, go back to XP SP3. Problem solved!!!!!!!

Hi,
Will appreciate any help regarding this issue.
My Gmail account is auto sending an email to all my gmail contacts without my knowledge until I saw reply posts of unsuccessful emails. Contents as such:
"Good Day.I just Uploaded a file,I would like you to view.Click Here to view. "
I too opened a similar email afew weeks back. Nothing seems wrong at first so I never really thought much about it.
Can someone help me on this?
I have just changed my password for my Gmail. hopefully it stops the sending. but I want to know if my computer is infected or by using smartphones or tablets, will it affect the gadgets too?
Thank you!

A:Gmail auto sending to my contacts, and auto deleting a virus link

A SPAMmer does not need access to your Gmail account in order to use your email address.

They can use whatever SPAM-sending program they like to send out email using *-your-* email address in the Sender's field.

Then, if any of the email addresses they sent the email to happen to be invalid, the unsuccesful delivery messages would be returned to you simply because your email address was in the Sender's field.

In order to stop this, you would have to find the person using your email address and hang them by the neck until dead. ;)

Does anybody else here have a weird issue with the Auto setting on the keyboard backlight where it only works when the auto-SCREEN brightness is disabled?  If both are enabled, the screen will auto change correctly, but the keyboard stays off all the time. It still works with Fn-Space for off-low-high, but no auto enable. If I disable the Auto-Screen Brightness in Windows, the keyboard auto will start working correctly. Enable both, shine a flashlight at the top left of the screen and watch the brightness go up/keyboard turn off. Turn off flashlight and screen goes down, but keyboard backlight doesn't turn back on. Then, turn off the screen auto-brightness and shine a flashlight. The screen will (obviously) stay the same, keyboard backlight turns off. Turn off the flashlight and the keyboard will fade back on within a few seconds. Doesn't matter what version of the Intel UHD driver is installed (23.20, 24.20.100, etc), it does the same. Newest Intel sensor drivers, newest PM driver, etc all installed. SIF has been reinstalled multiple times. Does it in both Win10 Pro/Ent 17134 and 16299. Reflashing the BIOS and ME has no effect, full CMOS clear has no effect, hooking a debugger to the light sensor data stream shows it's changing accordingly to brightness.

Have had Y410p for years without this issue. Now when I move the mouse cursor across the screen, it auto clicks/auto selects (without me tapping or clicking) and then release automatically as well. It will do this continuously as I keep moving the mouse cursor with the Touchpad. This is super annoying and causes multiple issues with my ability do most things on my Lenovo laptop. The two biggest problems are: click buttons which I do not intend and selecting/moving icons & screens which I do not intend. And it makes it nearly impossible to use the laptop for gaming. I have downloaded and reinstalled the Touchpad ELAN driver (version 11.4.17.1 for my O/S Windows 8). I have gone through Mouse Properities setting and ELAN Smart-Pad settings. I have disabled Tapping, but does not make a difference. I have set Sensitivity to max Low and then max High, but does not make a difference. Any ideas on how to solve this particularly annoying Touchpad issue? Help please! Thanks.

A:IdeaPad Touchpad issue with auto-clicking/auto-selecting when moving mouse cursor

Disable TAPPING in the Synaptic control panel. See the screen shot via the Device settings tab and properties. TAPPING is unchecked - a useless feature and a easy way to wreck and operating system and/or loose files. Its far too easy to tap drag and drop a folder or worst without realizing it until its too late. If its a system fie/folder you likely won't boot the next time or you kill an application. I have been diabling this on notebooks for decades. DEADLY feature.

Have a look in the Event Viewer through the control panel-> administrative tools. Look at both "system" and "applications" . If you can determine the program that is giving the error you will want to reinstall that troublesome program.

What can I do to fix this?

Hi Indy and welcome to the forums,

I have no experience with Outlook 2000 unfortunately but I would assume you have a setting turned off - something along the lines of 'Send e-mails automatically'.

I think it would be in Tools > Options? I suggest just hunting around in there and checking various settings

Hope this helps,

I have a nice little database that I set up to track donations of items to our organization. The primary table tracks the donor information: name, address, etc. (main form) and I have created a related table that tracks the date of donation and items donated utilizing a sub-form. Thanks to the fine help I received here I was able to relate these tables using a “Link_ID” field and it has worked nicely. (One donor could have multiple donations.)

Now, I’d like to enhance things a little bit. When I enter donor information into the main form and then go to the sub-form for the donation information, I’d like the business_name field to autofill as I start to type. Now, I know this can be done because most commercial databases have this function. Quicken is one that comes to mind. I know it has to pull this information from somewhere, I just need to know how to get it to work!

I have been unsuccessful finding any pertinent information on an “autofill” field in some sources. (I really don’t want a drop-down list box because this could potentially get too large.)

TIA.

A:Auto complete or Auto Fill field in Access?

Yes, well, unfortunately, in Access, the drop-down list is the only type of control that uses auto-fill, unless you want to use a text box and code (there's an example of that in the developer's handbook, but it's complicated).

No matter how big your list is, if you sort the underlying query alphabetically on company name, it will still autofill, and you can even build a not-in-list response to add new customers...

Make sure the auto-expand property of the drop-down (or combo) control is set to Yes, and you'll see that you never even have to drop down the list...

The "Customize this Folder ..." and "Folder and Search Options ..." and "Properties" choices don't seem to do anything. So, I have two major headaches (at the moment): 1) How do I stop Vista's constant auto-sorting of folders? If I change a file name or add a few files to a directory it automatically resorts everything! This is extremely frustrating ... especially if I make a naming mistake and don't know where to find the file! How do I stop Vista until I--and only I--decide to refresh the folder?2) How do I stop Vista from deciding (always wrongly) what "Type of folder" a directory is and forcing its own display and sort criteria on it--actually them as it decides about EVERY folder and doesn't follow MY choices! Why can't Windows do what I need it to do?!? Hello

We have a windows update group policy applied to various users machines in our domain. The policy is to automatically restart / update users machines if they are logged off. This does not appear to be working in any case.

I have compared the registry settings on machines to what they should be if the policy applied and they are correct:

HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU

AUOptions - 4
NoAutoRebootedWithLoggedOnUsers - 1
ScheduledInstallDay - 0
ScheduledInstallTime- 1
NoAutoUpdate-0

This would imply the install / restart should be happening automatically at 1am if no user is logged on.

When users come in in the morning and log in they immediately get a "Restart your machine to finish installing updates" dialogue and it is driving us insane!

Can anyone please advise ?

Thanks

Then type 3 into the Command window, hit enter.

I found a SuperUser thread indicating that I can delete this directory by: a) Press Windows key + R
b) Type: %windir%\system32\cleanmgr.exe
c) Hit Enter on your keyboard
I haven't tried this, don't know if it works, and am afraid that I'll make the 6 gig download start all over again.
Is there a way to get rid of these files once and for all, and insure that they never come back again?
Thank you in advance for your feedback!

A:Stop auto download of Windows 10 into $Windows.~BT

don't worry, that is just windows update logs, it should be fine to delete.

Hi guys,

i bought a tower that had windows 8 on it originally
i installed 7 pro to keep everything uniform...for the users mostly

i bought a win 7 pro license but when i went to activate it says windows is activated
with the ask for genuine microsoft software logo software on the right

there is no option to change the key...
i dont remember activating during install and assumed i would get the 3 days before the nag screen
i used a dell windows 7 pro 64 bit install disk...how is this possible?

any ideas?
i suppose i can change the key via other means...but is it necessary as i could use the license on another box...

what would you do?

A:Does windows 7 auto activate if windows 8 original?

There's your problem, you used a Dell disc. Dell, and some other OEM's, embed the keys into the installation disc. You shouldn't use a Dell disc except on the Dell computers its designed for. Change the key and do a proper activation to keep your client legal.

Windows 7 prof started installing updates before shutdown. When computer turned on again, it would not boot and the mouse was not to be found. Error message said could not repair the problem and showed option of system restore. Since there was no mouse working I had no cursor and could not choose system restore as a result. After two or three tries, I did control alt delete during startup and windows loaded normally. I think it finished configuring updates then acted normally. Afraid now to turn it off. Any ideas?

Is this thread a different way of asking the same question you asked in these 2 threads?

If it's the same issue/question you should stay with one thread (and answer questions asked) or it gets confusing.
If it's a different issue, what do you mean by "auto-refresh" ?

I have two computers both running Win 98 one computer shuts all the way down but the other stops at a message that it is safe to shut down. How can I set it to shut down auto.?

A:auto shutdown of windows

There are several bugs in windows that can cause that. MS even has a few patches for it. Sometimes a peice of HW is not telling the OS it's done, example, a CD in a CDROM.

Also, some programs can hang at shutdown, like Norten or McAffee.

Only thing constant, when the HD is finished, it's OK to shut down.

I've had a DELL computrer for a little over a year, with WIN XP (I only had 98 before)

Every now and then something comes up (and stays in the tastbar) saying there's a new Windows update, do I want to install it? If I do, it does, if I don't it sits in the taskbar and installs it anyway when I close down (at least some do, I'm not sure they all do)

It doesn't even say WHAT they are, until it goes to install it, and then I can cancel it, but it comes back another time.

The main one I've been seeing it the Windows Genuine Software one. The first time this came up, I looked it up and it installs something so if you put in an illegal copy of Windows (or something?) it picks up on this and keeps telling you till you pay/register it (I think that's the point of it) I don't play on putting in any different Windows, I don't have a restore CD, none came with it (it's built in I guess). Maybe it's picky/paranoid of me, but I don't like all this being connected to Windows. For all I know they are keeping a file on everything I write or receive. Again, I don't write/receive anything illegal or wrong, it's the idea of it.

With the first Windows genuine software installation, it kept coming up and I kept closing it, refusing the download. This was the first time I noticed when I shut the computer down that night, a box popped up installing it ANYWAY.

Like there's no choice.

Even though I installed this, ever... Read more

Help with my Bungled attempt to establish a Log on user Account Automatically at Windows 8 Startup w/o having to enter name andpassword at startup in Widows 8.1. I correctly did this using "Option One" of Brink's Tutorial procedure with two new laptops several months ago, however I now have gone brain dead while attempting the same on my new Desktop, with 8.1 O/S. For some reason the"Automatically Log ON", box did not pop up allowing me to enter my Microsoft User name; Password: or Confirm Password: as he illustrated in his "OPTION ONE, 4.,C,D. Still brain dead, I selected enter anyway, it did not work and now the PC offered me a slightly new picture requesting me to sign in with name and password. How can I return to square one to do this right? (I hate passwords).
Thanks Ross

My windows shutdown automatically. The problem appeared just after I connected iPod but it has now become common. Now my windows shutdown even if the iPod is not connected. I even reinstalled my Windows 7 but the problem not solved. It proves that it is not a software problem, it should be hardware problem. What can be reasons? Overheating? PSU?

PS: It generally shutdown when I play any game or I install any software. It shutdown without giving any message, it doesn't restart it just shutdown.

I am quite annoyed of this problem as I can't save any document and all the data is lost when system shutdowns. So please help, I will be very thankful. Thanks in advance

A:Windows Auto Shutdown - Help

This is probably because of the CPU overheating, as you mentioned it's when you're playing a game or installing software, both which takes quite alot.

I'd check the heat on your computer, on everything from CPU to the motherboard.
If the CPU is 55C>, get some cooling paste.

Hello all, hopefully someone on here can solve a very frustrating problem.

A laptop of mine contracted a virus, and installed a fake antivirus program. I was able to uninstall the fake antivirus, but now I have another problem.

Every time I turn on / restart the laptop, I get the message "Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute, please save your work now".

The laptop then restarts, ad infinitum.

Now, having done a quick google search, I see lots of reccommendations involving either going into Safe Mode or using the Advanced Boot Options.

Problem is, I can't get the F8 menu screen to come up on the problem laptop.

I have another laptop of the exact same model - this one is uninfected and I can get the F8 menu up just fine, so it's nothing to do with me mis-timing pushing the button.

I have tried going into Safe Mode via the Boot options in msconfig, but alas I get the same error message in Safe Mode, too, and again my computer is forced to restart.

It's so frustrating! I can't run an antivirus because my computer keeps restarting before it can get to work.

Any help would be gratefuly welcomed.

Thanks in advance!

Ryan F.

My graphics card is a nVidia GeFource 880GT, 512MB, SLI

In the process of setting up the system, I must have accepted some setting that often causes windows (particularly daughter windows) to fly to the edge of either monitor 1 or monitor 2.

Anyone know how to stop this? My eyes are red from looking!

A:Auto-docking windows

My bad ... never closed out this thread. I have nVidia graphics adapters (an 8800GT and a 9500GT) and they are configured by nView Desktop Manager. Under "Windows" it has an option to "Snap window edges by:" ... this allows "No window snapping" or a number of pixel options to allow your windows to snap a fixed distance from the window edge. I changed that to "No window snapping" and, surprise, they don't snap to the edges anymore. I suspect it pays to read all this stuff in your control panels. At one time I must have thought it cool ... that wore off quickly. Sanity restored.

Hi. I downloaded a file with virus.
My Windows XP keeps restarting by itself after about 5 minutes after start up.

Had some unknown startup files like:
braviax.exe
mswords98
ikowin

Tried to remove them from startup but they keep coming back.
Unable to delete the file itself.
Computer still restarts in safe mode with networking.

Finally did a system restore in safe mode.
Everything seems to be normal now.
But I am not sure whether the virus is still in my system.

Can anyone help?
Thank you.

It used to shut down automaticaly (turn off the computer by itself etc)

Since I re-installed 2000, a screen now appears saying it is now safe to turn off your computer. I don't mind this so much, but my computer won't turn off at the button, so I have to cut the power at the back.

I tried enabling "hibernate" option, but it still does the same thing.

Can any one help me with this?

thanks
