Are portable apps preferable, even for non-portable use ?

Q: Are portable apps preferable, even for non-portable use ?

Some software publishers or authors offer both portable and installable versions of their products. (Kee Pass is one of them.)

Is it advisable to systematically prefer the portable version, when running it from a fixed drive and not a thumb drive, according to the logic that if it's possible not to write into the registry, it's better not to ?

I often try new software, and I'm concerned about long-term stability. I install and uninstall a lot, using Revo Uninstaller Pro. But I've come accross people advising not to use Revo or other fancy uninstallers, just to stick to the product's own uninstaller or the Windows function.

Also, I have set C-Cleaner to a daily auto-run. In the past, I used its registry cleaner quite regularly. But some people say it's better not to clean the registry at all.

So I figured the more applications could stay away from the registry, the better. Is this a correct assumption ? Are there any drawbacks to portable apps ?

Preferred Solution: Are portable apps preferable, even for non-portable use ?

I recommend downloading and running DRP. It's a recovery tool that has been proven to recover files that most other programs have no luck with. I've even recovered files from freshly formatted or partitioned drives.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/v51TwD. (This link will automatically start a download of DRP that you can save to your computer.)

A: Are portable apps preferable, even for non-portable use ?

HI
I have been using a lot of cleaning softwares too . Registry as well as junk cleaners.
Registry cleaner to me is a good thing as it removes the useless leftovers of programs that are left by their regular un-installer or some deleted files.

ANS1 > I recommended to clean registry as it improves performance and reduce junk in resgitry . So if portables apps dnt have or create these junks in registry then ur assumption is right and i m at your side too because " u dont need to re-install every software when u replace OS as it will work as it is if its PORTABLE "

ANS2 > Portable softwares are better then installed ones .

Above are the answer given as a user , i have used many portable softwares never had any issue just benefits

These days, whether you’re in business or a student, many of us move different offices, buildings and want quick access to our email. However, it’s not always easy to use someone else’s computer. For instance, if they’re logged on then you’ll need to use their browser and you’ll leave a browsing trail, personal information and you never know what they have installed on their machine. Would you check your account balance from another computer, for example?

There are a number of applications that can be installed on to an external USB drive and then run from this drive, without requiring installation on the host computer. All you need to do is move your USB device/key from computer to computer and keep everything stored on this device. You can customise the applications as required, too.

Many of your favourite applications are available in portable versions: Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird, OpenOffice and many others.

The prayaya v3 is a collection of these portable applications, including a web browser, email client, office suite, calendar/scheduler, instant messaging client, anti-virus and backup utility. They are all included with an integrated menu, all preconfigured to work ‘out of the box’. You simply need to drag and drop the suite on to your USB device/key and they’re ready to be used.

I have portable apps on a flash drive, and everythings working ok, but just lately, on an XP machine at work, after I have run the 'start' button to lauch the Portable Apps launcher, the quick launch icon isn't always visible in the notifications/quick launch toolbar. This means I have to keep the folder open where the start.exe is to run the launcher when I want to run another portable app. As I said, sometimes it's there, other times it's not. Can any explain what could be happening?

Security wise? They can be infected too. Although I haven't experienced running an infected one that can bleed infection into the system. In case they appear to be infected, I just delete everything and replace it with a zipped backup.

Performance? Running an app exclusively from a folder from an HDD is faster than one running from a USB drive. Although you can install a portable app on your HDD, the main purpose of portability is that you can carry it with you always.

Hi folks,

I happen to see an article while back on a different site that suggested using "Portable Apps" over their Installer version is Much Better for the Windows operation. For example like 7-Zip, Defrag programs, VLC, etc.

Q1: Is this a True statement? Is it Better to use Portable applications whenever is possible?
Or can this practice be worse for the Windows operation.

BTW, I am running Vista Home Prem. SP2, X64 on my laptop.

1. Executed TAKEOWN /f on both directories
2. Executed ICACLS /grant administrators:F /t on both the directories
3. Set the application compatibility mode to Windows XP SP3 and even tried launching with "Run as Administrator"
4. Ran procmon when launching the applications. None of the entries stood out except a CreateFile entry prior to process exit related C:\Windows\Prefetch with result status NAME_NOT_FOUND. However I could navigate to the directory and locate the file as well

AppImage - Linux apps that run anywhere

As a user, I want to download an application from the original author, and run it on my Linux desktop system just like I would do with a Windows or Mac application.

As an application author, I want to provide packages for Linux desktop systems, without the need to get it 'into' a distribution and without having to build for gazillions of different distributions.

Leading Linux Distributions

Download an application, make it executable, and run! No need to install. No system libraries or system preferences are altered. Can also run in a sandbox like Firejail.

Distribute your desktop Linux application in the AppImage format and win users running all common Linux distributions. Package once and run everywhere. Reach users on all major desktop distributions.

Immediately after purchasing an 8 GB USB flash drive with the intention of running portable applications off it on the various Windows XP machines I have to use, I had installed the Portable Apps Base (http://portableapps.com/suite) and then through it, several applications, including OpenOffice Portable, Firefox portable and Tucan Portable.

Probably after using the drive on one of my office computers, some files and folders seemed to become corrupted. After trying unsuccessfully to delete mysterious, un-openable files with special characters in their names that appeared seemingly from nowhere, I formated the drive.

After formating, I was able to copy data and music files from my computer's hard drive to the flash drive correctly. However, I am now unable to properly re-install the PortableApps Base program on the flash drive. Thus, the main purpose of buying it is
defeated.

The PortableApps software does seem to install, but when I double-click on the StartPortableApps.exe icon on the flash drive
(F:\Software\Portable\StartPortableApps.exe), I get various error messages. Sometimes the message says that only part of the read request could be executed, and sometimes I get "StartPortableApps.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close". I got the latter after scanning the drive with an antivirus (no virus detected) and then checking the drive for errors (F -> right clock -> Properties -> Tools -> Error checking).

Has anybody make a successful Win XP Portable with a thumb drive?

I have read many websites and "How To's" but to no avail... it is one of those things that I tell myself I must learn to do as it would make my life easier for those times when the computer has a virus or help a friend with a problem, etc, etc.

I was able to get one going with bartPE but it takes a long time to load the iso file.

If any of you have, can you point me in the right direction?

A:USB Win XP Portable

Assuming you'd even getting it working, it wouldn't be usable. The USB interface doesn't work well booting a Windows OS. The performance would be bad, and some sites claim it drasticllay shortens the life of the drive.

I'm not sure how this would help (if it were possible) for either situation. If a computer has a virus, either fight it directly or pull the drive and connect it to a working computer and clean it.

Hi All.

I was about to buy WD passport 500G when I noticed that they released a new edition and accordingly to the majority of the reviews on Amazon.co.uk Western Digital My Passport Essential 500GB USB 2.0
it is a disaster. They built s/w into HD's ROM, so you cannot get rid of it by formatting HD (it is loading a virtual cd-rom every time you plug the HD in. Just like Scan u3 usb stick, although I think you can get red of this one (didn't try it b/c I like it)). Also it has nonstandard small USB connector/cable.

So, I will have to buy either previous edition while stock lasts or I found another HD that looks OK but I don't know anything about it.

Do you know anything about this Samsung HD? I found more or less good review on Tom's h/w but I would like to hear from "real" people

A:Portable USB HD

You aren't necessarily limited to the major brands. You could build your own by buying an external enclosure and then fitting it with the drive of your choice. I no longer buy WD/Maxtor, Seagate, ect externals. I just find an enclosure with good reviews and a decent price, then match it up with the drive I want.

If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

NOTE: If you have a USB keyboard and/or mouse, you'll have to modify the instructions and leave enough parts for those to function. I don't have one yet, so I haven't had time to modify the instructions.

Well have you tried actually tried playing more than one movie? If yes and it is still the same, you are probably stuck BUT if it was expensive, then you can often get a screen replacement (take it it's LCD) from the manufaturer or maybe even ebay?! Screens on these little things are usually simple to replace. If you cannot afford it or don't want to bother, there is no point in trashing it. Advertise it on ebay as broken saying it 'may need a screen replacement' however you are unsure.

and another dialogue box which says "cannot copy (filename) the device is not ready"

my comp. had a virus earlier, but i treated it. i m not sure though, that its fully free of viruses now. is this a problem with the new hard disk or with my system? what should i do?

A:Portable HD problem

Definitely scan with more than one anti-virus to eliminate that as a possibility. Be sure the connection is not loose.

To reduce the possibility of lost data, turn off caching on that drive. Find the drive in DeviceManager and look at its property sheet. Uncheck all boxes about increasing performance and check any boxes about optimizing for "quick removal". That turns off caching so that data is written to the drive immediately and reduces the chances of data loss if it is disconnected. In fact, after changing those settings, you no longer need to use "Safely Remove Hardware" before unplugging the drive--just pull it out.

At least that will prevent any data loss untill the issue can be further explored.

I seem to have an issue connecting portable devices, much like the Zune I just received for Christmas. I believe one branching start of an issue that I have is that I do not have a link for Portable Devices under my Device Manager. This may be because I didn't install all the drivers and what not when I reformatted last, but that is why I come to you all. Do you know why I do not have a Portable Devices link under my device manager?

Thanks

Hoping someone can help with problem I am occurring. I have a portable DVD player (HP DVD 1170 Portable Drive) and has always worked in the past with same computer I am still using. I believe it happened after either a reformat of machine or update. The DVD player starts off with it's name, but as soon as I insert a DVD it keeps wanting me to put in correct media as at that time the name changes to CD which shouldn't be. I'm running Windows on an HP computer. Thanks, and hope someone is out there with a fix for me. Appreciated!!!

A:Need help with Portable DVD Changing to CD

The name has no bearing on operation.

With the said, what is the EXACT error that you are getting?

Have you tested with multiple discs? Test with commercial and burned media, CD and DVD.
