Win7 Boots to blank Desktop Wallpaper

Q: Win7 Boots to blank Desktop Wallpaper

Hey, I am trying to install Windows 7 x64 over Windows XP Pro SP2 x32. When I boot with the Windows 7 CD, it says "Windows is loading files" then it stops and goes to a blank windows 7 desktop background with a large cursor. Completely skips the steps that ask for timezone etc, and has no function ability. Any ideas?

Preferred Solution: Win7 Boots to blank Desktop Wallpaper

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there

This is an intermittent fault, but it is getting much more frequent: My PC (XP SP3) failed to boot past blank wallpaper seven times in a row last night and would only load up in Safe Mode.

I know how to get to safe mode, but I don't know what to do to diagnose the problem once I'm there. The PC has finally booted up today, but it's something I need to fix. It takes 4 or 5 mins to boot up, even when it does work properly.

My antivirus is kept up to date and scanned regularly, the disk is regularly defragmented and I use CCleaner to keep things tidy. I cannot think of anything I've installed recently. The problem has been getting worse for a while.

Please advise!

My Windows 7 was functioning properly until it suddenly stopped doing so, and I didn't even install or update anything.

Now it just boots into the desktop wallpaper and I can still move the cursor around, but there's no GUI and totally no response from any mouse key / keyboard / touchpad. CTRL+ALT+DEL does nothing, F1 does nothing, ALT+F4 does nothing, right click does nothing. Not even an error was shown.

In the past I used to do a System Restore from Safe Mode whenever things go wrong but now the same problem occurs when I boot into Safe Mode. After the wall of text (when booting into Safe Mode) it just shows the desktop wallpaper, but the difference is that a Command Prompt shows up. However, the Command Prompt is unresponsive, and I couldn't type anything in it, basically useless.

I've tried all the options from the F8 advanced boot options, none worked.

Should I just reinstall Windows?

edit: My desktop wallpaper is just basic wallpaper, non-fancy, non-animated.

A:Boots into desktop wallpaper, cursor movable, no GUI, no response

Hi Secruoser

When you got to Safe Mode did you choose Safe Mode with command prompt ? That's the only way a command prompt will pop up automatically in Safe Mode .

No matter what I change my desktop background to, or how I go about changing it, it goes back to black.. It will NOT go to desktop background -- and play any themes or even a static wallpaper picture. Not sure why it changed and cannot go back to the different rotating themes. Everything else seems to be working fine. No weird sketchy virus problems at all. I ran a scan for adware and another scan for viruses. No issues. What needs to be done to get my desktop wallpaper back.

Then I decided I needed to get adaware and after installation induced a restart my machine wouldn't boot up on my TV. So I hooked up an old CRT monitor I had with a DVI adapter and what came up was a blank screen with just a cursor.

Ok, im sure everyones had this at one time or another, but the fact that this problem has resurfaced again since i re-installed XP a while back is a real pain.

You bootup to no desktop icons or taskbar, just your desktop background. You cant do a thing, like run task manager to run the explorer process. Only option is to switch off the PC.

Ive run virus and adware scanners and i use ZoneAlarm. Nothing turned up. I have SP2 installed. Its happens about 1 in 3 times i bootup.

Can anyone give me some advice on this????

A:PC boots to blank desktop.

I think the problem is simply that it is slow in starting up as you may have too many start-up programs. When you get your system running, type "msconfig" in the run command, and try to minimise the number of startup programs.

We have a Windows 7 computer, fairly new Acer Inspire laptop. Recently, when it had turned itself off for power reasons, when we entered the login it first said 'not found' and then dropped to a screen that looks like the login background but without the login box. Ctrl+Alt+Delete doesn't work, you have to force hard boot. On rebooting, it recognizes that startup failed and offers an attempt to repair. I ran this about 40 times, I think it's clear that isn't fixing it. It boots to that plain screen, so it starts windows, but then just sits there.

I'm told the Windows 7 disk has a more detailed startup repair option that might allow us to solve this without losing a lot of critical data on the hard drive. However we cannot find the dang thing, we had a whole stack of info/disks/etc. I thought was in the box it came in, but when we got it down from the closet, box was empty, and we can't find any trace of any of the original materials. I don't know what to do. Is there some way just to get that repair-startup utility without having to purchase a whole new windows 7 disk? We are afraid to send it for warranty repair to Acer because the default 'repair' appears to be reverting back to default settings which would wipe out all our data.

Do you have any suggestions?

Many thanks,

Hello I just installed Windows 8 M1 (6.1.7850.0.winmain_win8m1.100922-1508_x86fre_client-enterprise_en-us.iso) on an Acer Aspire One that I have in addition to my HP and successfully activated it with Build_7850_Activator.exe Version .

The problem is the blank wallpaper desktop and a non Aero theme that keeps coming back every restart. This was happening with Windows 8 from the beginning of the installation and did not go away after activation. This problem was NOT present when Windows 7 was installed on the machine. And the wallpaper and Aero themes are available and work properly until each reboot of the system.

Is there a way to make this go away and fix this issue?

P.S.: I was pleasantly surprised that Windows 8 M1 is fully functioning with close to no lag on maximum visual settings on the Aspire One with only 512 Mb of RAM.

Good to hear that.

I installed b7850 on an AthlonXP with 768 MB of RAM (DDR) and it's working satisfactorily. However, I'd like to see how it performs with a newer build with more working features like Aero Colorization.

A:Desktop image/ Wallpaper goes blank after every reboot/start up

Please do the following:
- activate/validate the Windows installation at http://www.microsoft.com/genuine
- run sfc.exe /scannow to replace any problem files
- open a support incident with Microsoft to see if they can fix the activation status of your system
- If that doesn't fix it, then wipe the hard drive and reinstall Windows
- don't use "leaked"/torrent builds

I never saw this before. Brand new M900 out of the box connected to a Dell monitor, Windows 10. Boots up and does not make a connection to the monitor. Monitor says no input source. Changed monitors, cables, different connections (HDMI, etc). Multiple reboots of each of the different setups. Monitor(s) remain black. Connected to the internet, reboot with Dell monitor and monitor displays comes to life. I thought it just needed to find it's drivers. Registered the machine and powered down. Later, booted up the M900 ? monitor black again. Retried changing everything out again - no monitor. So I purchased a new Lenovo monitor. No luck, still a black monitor. I would appreciate any ideas.

The title says it all. When I open a URL shortcut from the desktop, IE opens it to a blank page. All links opened from within IE and other programs, however, open fine.

I have spent two days searching for a solution everywhere I can locate and tried all of the solutions I found (short of a reinstall of WIN7) and nothing has worked. I have uninstalled IE 10 back to IE8 and reinstalled it twice, but each reinstall of IE8, 9, and 10 have not gotten rid of the problem. I must stay with WIN7 and IE10 for now for various reasons so I need to find a solution.

This problem only occurs now & then, and most recently after doing an application uninstall using the vendor's uninstall tool (from the All Programs listing). The final step of the uninstall procedure is to re-start the system. This is when boot up stops with just the wall paper graphics displayed -- no Desktop nor System Tray. I recovered only after several attempts at System Restore (via Safe Mode), selecting earlier and earlier reset dates. All startups since then have been OK but, now I'm uneasy about doing ANY uninstalls!! Any one have a suggestion about what's going on (and how to fix)??

Hi Elmotrix, welcome to tenforums.com!

There may be various ways to accomplish this.

You could scour the web for some of the latest 'Spotlight' images, then put them in a 'Slideshow' folder.

You may also be able to fetch them on your own machine.
You need to show 'Hidden files, folders and drives', then navigate to C:\Users\{your name}\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalState\Asset s
then copy all the items to another folder and begin renaming them: 1.jpg, 2.jpg, etc.

Hi there,

So a while back when i was running XP on this rig, i had a active desktop wallpaper setup that would display animated local radar images. Basically the same radar you would see if you put in your zipcode in the weather.com or accuweather.com radar section.

So now with Win 7, i cant get it to work for the life of me....and no, sorry, the wimpy sidebar gadgets just dont cut it.

Basically what it was, and am looking to accomplish, is have a live animated radar as my wallpaper / background.
Preferably not the whole screen, just alike a 12X8 square or something relative.

Picture attached of a mock setup of what im talking about.

Im pretty sure i originally was using this as my source for the animated wallpaper:

The computer crashed hard. I was running an application call Stylizer, a visual css editor. One of the tasks it allows you to do is switch between several browsers to see how a web page may render differently. When I clicked on a form select element while in IE 7.0, it crashed. This is a repeatable bug that I have encountered before(don't click forms select again ya dummy). Anyways, all the applications that were running died and the computer froze requiring a hard reboot. When the computer returned, the desktop wallpaper image was zoomed. Obviously something became corrupted with the crash. I can't find a solution how to unzoom the wallpaper image. I tried a number of display and accessibility options without any luck(screen resolution, DPI, large icons, centered, stretched, etc.). I did notice if I changed from my usual "hide desktop icons", to "show desktop icons", the wallpaper image is then displayed correctly. I can also kill the explorer.exe process and the wallpaper will show correctly. If I run File>New Task(Run...)>explorer.exe again, it reverts back to the zoomed wallpaper. I tried a restore point from the day before. Wiped display drivers and installed the latest. Switched the dvi cable to a different output on the card. I uninstalled Stylizer, all it's files and registy entries. I've run sfc /scannow. I also tried rolling back to SP2 and back again to SP3 to re-install explorer.exe. Still zoomed. I've run out of ... Alright so after about 3 years of using my windows 7, I was about ready or thinking if I wanted to upgrade to windows 10; I didn't want to. But the problem is, now I can't use my computer at all randomly! I don't know what caused the problem and all I know is that it happened when my dad brought the computer out of town and he didn't even have admin rights.

Here is an image of what it looks like. This is bad, because most boot options have diss appeared also, like safe mode, or fixes. But I still have f2 and f10 so I can boot up my Ubuntu disk. After a while of using my Ubuntu disk and struggling to find a fix, I've learned that my RECOVERY is C:/ and my local disk is D:/ as shown here: when I attempted to reinstall windows 7. Keep in mind NO drivers showed up and I had to browse and see that. On further search this also happened: when I tried to find a system restore point... My local disk is 0 mb!?!?? I'm in desperate need of help. My Ubuntu disk cannot mount my hard drive either, so I don't know what to do. It can mount the recovery and all other parts of the computer, though if that helps. But I need help urgently. I've been working about a week on this with no luck.

On a Dell Latitude E6400 laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit, after choosing a user account and providing the password, it boots to a completely blank screen except for the mouse, which can be moved around normally.

Same problem with other user accounts. Same problem booting to Safe Mode.

When I press Alt+Ctrl+Del to try to get into Task Manager, nothing happens.

The screen looks normal when booting up; I see Windows starting, and see the normal screen for choosing a user account. It isn't until after choosing the user account that it goes blank.

This laptop was working normally until this morning.

What can I do to troubleshoot this?

A:Boots to blank screen

Update: I tried System Restore and still have the same problem. I tried System Restore twice -- once with the last restore point from when it was working normally, and again with the oldest restore point in the list, which was from about a week and a half ago. Same result in both cases; looks normal until after logging in, and then the screen is blank.

I thought I'd try a repair install but apparently I can't do that because it can only be done from within Windows, and I can't get there.

My wife has files stored in My Documents etc. If I run a clean install of Windows over the old broken Windows, will she lose those files, or lose access to them?

Whenever I try to boot my PC, it loads to a blank screen with only the mouse pointer visible. I tried to right click and pressed CTRL+ALT+DEL but nothing happens. I tried booting up up Safe Mode and Last Known Good Configuration as well, but still get the blank screen.

When I load Safe Mode, the words "Safe Mode" still appear on the screen corners. The top of the screen says "Microsoft ® Windows XP ® (Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090804-1435:Service Pack 3)"

I have an HP system, which did not come with a Windows XP CD for me to try to boot the system. I can press F10 to get into HP System Recovery, but am not even sure if that will solve the problem.

I wasn't doing anything odd the last time I used the PC, so I'm not sure what could have happened. I have a lot of files on my hard-drives that I need access to as soon as possible and don't want to lose anything.

Can someone please help?

A:PC Boots up to blank screen

Try to remove all external hardware devices except keyboard and mouse then restart the computer and check the status.
Please check if recovery console installed in the computer, So that you can try to fix the problem from there.

Hi, I'm having a problem booting into Windows. Whenever I boot regularly the Windows logo screen will show, it'll look normal, then the screen will go black. No sound is played. My monitor on light stays constant. (It doesn't flash like there is no signal.) I've left it in this stage for hours, and there is no change.

If I try to boot into safe mode I'll see a list of system files then it'll hang at gagp30kx.sys. Once again I've left it in this stage for hours and no change.

I've tried to fix this myself. So far I've reinstalled Windows and reformatted then reinstalled. In both cases windows will boot and work normally for roughly eight boots. Then it'll return to the same problem. I've suspected this to be a software problem so I did the reformat and reinstall step three more times. The first time it stopped working after I installed Steam. The second and third time I installed steam successfully and it booted seven and nine times before the problem started. I did not install any new software before the problem started.

I haven't gotten any new hardware for years.

My Computer Specs:
A8V-E SE Motherboard
Athlon64 3700+ Processor
2GB Ram
250GB SATA2 Hard Drive
9800 GT Graphics Card

I also dual boot the computer with Xubuntu. If at all possible I'd like as much help as possible to go through the Terminal.

Thanks in advance.

I do wallpaper rotation on my desktop. I have a custom desktop and the backgrounds that I'm allowed to select seem to be only a limited set from the total available in the different Win7 folders. There seem to be a bunch in the \Globalization\MCT subdirectories, and more in \winsxs. Is there a way to just select all of the backgrounds provided in the Win7 directory and say "rotate through all of them at the selected rate"?

A:Is there a way to select all the Win7 wallpaper?

Don't know if you can select more than one folder for Desktop Background images, but as a work-around, if you copy all of those images that you want to use into your Pictures folder, and then select the Pictures folder as your "Screen Saver" --- you'll be able to rotate through all of the images. Technically they're still "Screen Savers" but if you shorten the time they start to display, it's almost like having them rotate like the Background.

When I switched on my PC, a box popped over the Login screen saying something like a file in the registry had gone bad & it had restored a previous registry from a log file which was successful.
Well it wasn't a success, because after the login screen I only get blank wallpaper with no icons, start button or taskbar.
Bringing up Task Manager reveals that explorer.exe is not listed. From File/New task (run) I typed Explorer, and also Explorer.exe with no luck. Could it have disappeared somehow?
When I run System Restore I get a plain box, so I can't restore to a previous state.
I can get onto the Internet by running ("C:\Documents and Settings\Guest\Start Menu\Programs\Internet Explorer.lnk"), hence this message, and can use the PC, but not everything works - my favourites don't appear in IE, and media player gives an internal error message.
I need to get explorer.exe back.
Is there a default registry setting I can use?
I tried Safe Mode & had no luck with the 'Previous good configuration' setting.
I have Norton, so don't think it can be a virus.
Am out of ideas now - it's turning into quite a challenge.

Hi my name is brad.

I have been playing on computers for a long time but never really went inside them. I finally decided to make it faster so i bought 256MB Value Ram 2.5V and installed it. Then a week later i bought 160GB maxtor 7200 RPM and a Stealth Radeon 9250 ATI graphics. I had them both installed at Staples. So when i came home I hooked it up and everything and played for about 2 weeks or so. Then problems started to happen. My graphics card had gotten disabled. So i brought it back to staples they fixed it then i brought it home again. When i turned it on The Windows Loading Screen came up and then it went Blank. It registers the keyboard threw the keyboard port but will not register the mouse threw USB 1.0 I have no idea what is wrong with it could someone please help me!!

A:Comp boots But Monitor is Blank

You don't say what version of Windows you have installed. That computer was built for Windows 98SE. If you have Windows XP, you simply do not have enough memory.
Otherwise, you have a problem with the video graphics card or driver... and too much hard drive for the OS.
What is reported as hard drive for the Maxtor... 160GB, 148 GB? What?

I was recently playing CS:S online when the computer froze up entirely. I powered off.

Upon restarting, the computer got through POST and the Windows (XP Pro SP2) loading screen. At this point, the monitor went black, excepting for the mouse cursor, which is responsive. This has been the behavior in restarting since then. I've left it in this state for over an hour without any progress.

Using a Windows boot floppy disk and/or using Safe Mode does not help.

I'd like to retrieve my files at the least, and preferably get this computer back in working condition so that I can enjoy it over Thanksgiving.

Let me know if you've got ideas as to how to fix this.

I was at my girfriends last night installing a program and it said i needed to restart to complete installation. As i restarted and after the windows xp splash screen i was left with a blank screen with no mouse.

I turned off the power and turned the PC back on and i was given the option to start in safe mode etc.

I can open windows in safe mode, but am not sure what to do, however i have a feeling it is something to do with my video driver maybe?

I am not too sharp on things like this so any help will be much apprieciated.

Many Thanks

P.S. i have already tried the option: restart windows with last known good config.

Hello will1992

Let`s try the easiest option first and see if it helps.

Boot into Safe Mode and try a System Restore.
Restore to before you installed that program.

Hi, I am having a problem with my computer. I have scheduled a chkdsk to take place the next time I restart my computer and when I restarted it, the problem started! After the Boot Screen finished booting nothing happens, the screen stays blank. I have left it for hours and still nothing happens. How can I solve this problem? I also wanted to mention that I have changed my boot screen using this tutorial. I didn't really have any problem after following that tutorial but I only wanted to mention that...

A:Vista boots to a blank screen!

That's probably why your screen is black because you changed the boot screen. There is a warning near the top of the tutorial. You would have to change it back to normal.

If you wanted to run chkdsk at startup or the Memory Diagnostic Tool and you have changed the default boot screen, then you will need to temporarily change the boot screen back to the default boot screen to be able to see what is happening first to be able to see what is happening when they run at startup.

A non-technical friend has asked me to look at his Toshiba Satellite Pro C70-A-159.

It was a Christmas present and has functioned perfectly for eight months ? two days ago (in his words) ?it won?t boot?. Actually it does, into a screen with no login but options for shutdown / restart / enable on screen keyboard etc (reading these forums, not an uncommon problem).

Safe mode works fine, even with network. Regressing the last three system restore points (one at a time) makes no difference. CHKDSK (at the DOS prompt) reports no problems. Service Station (in safe mode) won?t start as ?it may be corrupt ? please re-install or reboot?. I don?t know how to do the former (and am not sure it?s a good idea unless I know it will fix the issue), reboot makes no difference. Booting with logging or debug would maybe be helpful if I knew where it logged to!

I suspect he has upgraded to 8.1 from the Microsoft site, not Toshiba. Before I do a complete backup of data, regress to Windows 8 and follow the (quite complex) instructions for upgrading to 8.1 properly, is there anything else I can try?

A:Satellite Pro C70-A-159 boots to (almost) blank screen

Hi Adrian

I also think that you should test functionality with original ?factory settings?. Talk with your friend and ask him if there are some important data saved on his machine. Make backup and install original recovery image.

Here is short description - http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB2A03ES0000R01.htm
What you can also do before you start is to create recovery media, just to be sure you had it if something goes wrong. You can create this media using preinstalled Toshiba recovery media creator.

Reinstall original recovery image and check a bit how it works. Later you can upgrade it to Win8.1.
Here is Toshiba?s page about steps how to do this - http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/generic/windows8_1-message/

I think your friend will be happy when you do all this and bring him back 100% working machine and Win8.1.

Good luck

My laptop will boot just fine but nothing comes on the screen. Its a bit older so I figured I had nothing to lose so I took it apart. When I did that, I found a piece (which I am not sure what it is) that was broken, and put it back where it obviously went. I booted the computer and the screen came on. I didn't have any drives in so it said "no drives found. " I thought I had found the culprit, so I put the drives back in, and now it won't work again. I've looked online every where to try and find out what the broken piece was or what it does, but can't find it anywhere. My best explanation of the piece is; its a black square
1" x 1", maybe 1/16" thick. It looks like it may be graphite or something. Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions?

Welcome to TSG...

Can you post a picture? Better yet a picture including where you put the piece to make the display work?

I have two questions that might be connected.
I wasn't sure about where to post this, because I'm not sure if the problem is my screen, windows 7 drivers, video card, bios or something else.

I used to have two screens connected to my computer, now I only have one (I think it has something to do with the problems).

Problem1: Every time I power my computer, the computer itself turns on, but the screen stays off until windows 7 loads, then the motor turns on.

Problem2: Many of the times I put my computer in sleep mode, and try to turn in back on, I hear the computer turns on, but the screen shows nothing.

The screen itself is fine, if I restart and let windows load properly, the monitor works.
I updated my video card drivers.
And now I don't know what to do, I want to format my computer and reinstall windows 7, but I can't get into BIOS and boot from USB / CD because the screen is blank when booting.

Please, help! :)

A:Computer boots with blank screen

It sounds like the splash screen is disabled. In System Configuration, Boot Tab, uncheck No GUI Boot .

Hello people,
It has been a while since I posted. I have a Dell Inspiron N5050 laptop that is giving me fits. It was having an issue with explorer restarting continuously after it was upgraded from windows 7 by the customer. I recommended a clean install and backed up all their data and installed Windows 10. I pulled the latest drivers from dell.com and made sure I had them handy. At boot up the machine boots to a blank screen and boot chime plays. no mouse cursor and ctrl, alt, del do nothing. I found that if I press the power button and put it to sleep then wake it up with the power button it works fine. works for the whole time I am messing with it. If I reboot or power down I get the blank screen. I updated the chipset, video and audio drivers one at a time with a reboot each time and still no change. This only occurs during a reboot or cold boot. If the PC goes to sleep it wakes just fine.

I am at a loss as to the cause. There is no blue screen logs and I cant see anything wrong in the event viewer. No programs have been installed yet and Windows is fully updated.

I don't have this Laptop but looking at the BIOS A03 dated in 2011. Google it and the latest version is A05. You might want to update the BIOS first.

In addition, try to boot with one stick of RAM since they are not a matched pair (4GB & 2GB) and might create timing issue on cold boot.
