Internet Explorer pop-ups, errors, other curious behavior

Q: Internet Explorer pop-ups, errors, other curious behavior

Hi. My Internet Explorer just started acting strangely on my Netbook. Sometimes when I click on a link I just get returned to the Google homepage. Sometimes it's a chore trying to even get to the Google homepage because all these different search home pages come up. Sometimes there are advertisements that pop up at seemingly random times. Sometimes I get an error when trying to register on a website.
I may not have an active antivirus program running so that may be an issue. I would also like to check to see  if my Registry has been compromised if possible.
Also I have practically maxed out the drive with too many song files so I probably should remove some of those. The computer is also much slower than it was.
Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This began two days ago. Nothing has been changed on the computer in question.

Secure banking site. Have been logging into it daily, but two days ago got an error. Tried later from another location with no problem. Same thing occurred yesterday.
Today, same thing. Only I took it a step further and tried to login from another computer in my house. Logged in no problem. Downloaded a different browser (Firefox) on the original computer in question and logged in no problem.
Tried looking at security settings and such and don't see anything. Even tried typing the address directly (instead of bookmark) though the problem is not accessing the site, but when I attempt to put in my login ID it errors and says please put in a valid ID. The same ID works in the other locations obviously. What else can be stopping me from this?

A:Solved: Curious problem with Internet Explorer

does the id show up straight away (autofilled) or do you need to type it?

Hi guys

I have run into a problem that i just cannot seeme to get to the root of, and im rarely resorting to posting on forums but i really need guidance from some people who might be able to help me bughunt where the problem could be.

here is a description of the problem :

I am running a .bat file that contains takkill /f /im command, and everything is fine and dandy, when running the .bat taskkill works like a charm , same when using a cmd for the command.

I do however use a system that allows me to launch the same .bat file through another executable. i use this system all the time for many batch launches in order to make many machines run the same batch file, and have had no problems with it whatsoever in the past, all it does is launch the same .bat file that have proven to work ok.

however when launching the .bat through the above system taskkill.exe gives the somewhat nonedesciptive error : "ERROR: The specified module could not be found".

I have tried tried many things in order to find out why the .bat command would give different results depending on how it is launched. If i try running tasklist.exe without arguments to just produce a list of processes, the result is the same and this makes me conclude that it is the actual executable (taskkill.exe/tasklist.exe) that refuses/fails to start when the .bat is launched through my system.

just for info i have tried to "cd C:\windows\system32\" before making that .bat launch, allso... Read more

Do results change if you run the .bat file "as Administrator"?

Well, I have a minor but quite annoying problem with Firefox. (This is the unadulterated version, not one that was tampered with.) I'm have a couple of screenshots if needed to illustrate the problem, but I should be able to describe it well enough.

My homepage is CNN. When you open their index page, there is always a headline story at the top, accompanied by either a photo or a video. There is also a sidebar on the right of the page with some activity, such as live screening of the channel, financial updates, etc. None of these will operate for me in Firefox. I've tested it out with Opera, and the site is perfectly functional. This issue only occurs in Firefox, and it gets curious because it only happens at the CNN web site. I can watch video all over the web, just not at CNN if I'm using Firefox

I initially thought that this was a java issue. I made sure that I have the latest version of java on my computer, and then tried to enable it in Firefox. To do this, you use the Add-ons section, and enable java from there. The problem is, there is no reference to java in the Add-ons section. I have tried reinstalling java, restarting Firefox, restarting the computer, etc. - all of the things I can think of.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I know I'm missing something that will probably make me smack my forehead, but I've learned that I can show my lack of knowledge here without embarrassment... :D

Sorry this is so long. There's a condensed version in bold on the bottom with only the pertinent information.

I had posted this quite some time ago, before setting about trying to fix the problem on my own.

I turned my computer on today, and everything was running normally; I went about my business for a couple minutes until it just shut itself off. All the peripherals stayed on and acted like I had just performed a hard shutdown, so I'm pretty sure it's an issue with the computer itself.

If I leave it alone for a while, I can turn it back on, and it works fine until eventually shutting itself off again; the longer I leave it off, the longer it runs when I turn it on again.

I'm hoping this is enough information to provide some sort of diagnosis, as I don't really want to take it in for repairs on what seems like a rather simple problem. Thanks for any help.

edit: Update: Forget what I said above about being able to turn it on; it's completely shot now. I'm guessing the power supply's given out on me. Whenever I plug it in, what I'm guessing is the power supply starts emitting a somewhat faint yet very high-pitched, constant whine; not sure if this is new, or if I just started noticing it because I was taking a closer look at it. Anyway, if anyone disagrees with my conclusion, please let me know. Otherwise, I'll be replacing it pretty soon and hoping.Click to expand...

A:Computer won't turn on at all; Curious power supply behavior.

A lot of computers do that first burst of power, I can name 4 that I have had recently, and they are all happy and running (one in now my server), so this is not an issue. Does the computer not turn on at all? If it does not then I ran into one mahcine about a week ago that would not turn on at all, power supply was good, giving out 5 and 12, tested RAM, vid card, HDD's, CD ROM, mobo by itself, and reseated CPU. Nothing, this made me mad. So anyway I pulled the CMOS battery and boom, it worked, long story short it was a CPU recognition issue, dumb I know how it would not even turn on.

Tried pulling the CMOS battery on the new mobo? It is possible to get bad CPU's, I know a guy who went through 3 AMD's before he got one that worked, I do not think the issue is your power supply, it could be something is grounding out against the case or a bad CPU.

My computer was recently infected when I visited gamecopyworld.com. I've managed to clean out the infection, but IE is exhibiting some odd behavior ever since.

When I open IE and try to use the address bar to connect to a website, it looks like it's trying to connect, but then it just sits there and doesn't display anything and when I try to close the window I sometimes get the "End Task" dialog. I can open pages stored locally on my hard drive and link to other web pages from there (this is how I got the virus/trojan/etc. removed by using Housecall, turned out to be Vundo), and when I open a new window while IE is already running and displaying a web page, I can then use the address bar to go to a new page. I've downloaded and run several of the programs mentioned in articles I've read on this site:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
SuperAntiSpyware
ATF-cleaner
LSPfix

I cleaned out everything they recommended and I'm still having problems. Firefox seems unaffected.

A:Internet Explorer 6 Odd Behavior

Try these fixes:Log on as an administrator, go Start > Run and type: "cmd". In the window that appears type: "netsh winsock reset". When the program is finished, you will receive the message: "Successfully reset the Winsock Catalog. You must restart the machine in order to complete the reset." Close the command box and reboot your computer.Go Start > Run > type: "cmd" In the window that appears type: "ipconfig /flushdns". Close the command box.Go Start > Control Panel > Network Connections. Right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and and choose Properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item. Select the radio button that says "Obtain DNS servers automatically". Reboot. Warning: Some Internet Service Providers need specific DNS settings. You need to make sure that you know if such DNS settings are required before you make this change.

Ok, I'm relatively new at the whole computer thing and I know, "What took you so long?"

I have Windows XP but just recently, when I try to open Internet Explorer, it may take a few attempts before it opens.(ya' know the hourglass expires before anything happens) However, when I log off, ending program task panel opens, then ending program iexplore.exe opens and keeps opening for the amount of times I tried to open internet explorer.
This leads me to believe that it in fact opened somewhere but not anywhere I can see it. Also on occasion, the task panel will turn blue for quite sometime when I close out an open window.
I tried searching for an answer to this problem but to no avail, so any advice here would be most appreciated.

Recently I've been having trouble closing Internet Explorer successfully. Oftentimes I'll get a very suspicious error window that says "closing this window may cause serious problems." Generally when that happens I'll end the process via Task Manager rather than clicking on anything on the error window. I'm a bit paranoid that I may be infected with a key-logger of some type and I'd very much like to keep my online accounts secured. Once I've gotten the all clear from you guys I plan on creating new strong passwords for all my accounts. It seems like I haven't seen the problem since installing the latest Windows Updates recently (including the latest malware removal tool) but I thought I'd ask the pros just to be safe rather than sorry. I hope someone can help me work this out, it's driving me crazy!
I'll try to explain it in as few words as possible!
There is a website we need to access on which we're having trouble getting some of the buttons to display.  In short it works when the internet zone is set to "Medium" but not when it's "Medium-High" (I have added it to trusted sites
but in properties it shows as "Unknown Zone (Mixed)" so seems to use the "Internet Zone" settings.)
I am trying to track down which security setting is causing the issue.  To do this my plan was to make a note of all the settings that differ between Medium and Medium-High.  However if I set it to medium-high and manually change all the settings
to be identical to medium it still doesn't work... yet if I use the "Reset to: Medium" option at the bottom it does work!  This doesn't make any sense to me.
Are there other hidden stetting affected by the "Reset to" option that I can't change manually.
Any help would really be appreciated!  Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out what is wrong with my Norton Internet Security and/or Internet Explorer....

Both have been working fine up to now, but now all of a sudden, when I open Norton and try to select Norton Anti-Spam from the menu, I get the following Internet Explorer Script Error:-

Line: 15
Char: 1
Error: Object expected
Code: 0
Url: res://C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\AntiSpam\asRes.LOC/nasstatus.htm

Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?

Whether I click yes or no, it returns to the Anti-Spam page and says "Refreshing" next to each Anti-Spam feature. When I try to click on any of the features, I get another script error.

The reason I need to access the Anti-Spam section is because for some reason, ads are appearing on sites even though I have the Norton Ad Blocker on. I need to get into the Anti-Spam to check the status of the ad blocker, but it won't let me get any further than the daft script error!

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks guys!

Update: Sorted it. After installing some Norton and IE updates it seems to be okay now....sorry for starting such a pointless thread!

I keep getting error messages telling me something cannot be debugged (or something to that affect) and then it closes my int. explorer. I ran HJT so maybe the problem can be diagnosed using my log.

Turn OFF the debugging as YOU can not make any changes to the web pages that are giving you the error.

While in IE, go to "Tools, Internet Options" and then the Advance tab.

There shod be two (2) entries about "Debugging" add a check to BOTH.

Let us know how this works out!

Hi I'd like to take this time to thank all who will attempt to help me with fixing the errors on my pc.

The problem started a few days ago (3/15/08). I made the mistake of downloading 2 registry cleaners that seemed to clean the errors with my registry and optimize IE. But at the same time caused it to hang when ever I'd log on to my User account. I then decided to undo the changes I had made through the programs by using their restore features. After I did this I noticed that IE would load very slowly and launch pop-ups for every window or tab I created while browsing. Another problem is that for every new window or tab created a Buffer Over Run error would appear and crash my desktop. I downloaded a few programs like ad-aware, and a 3rd registry cleaner to try and fix the problem but wthout success. The Ad-aware scan found about 130 cookies, if I tried to delete using the program it would crash. I've been using Spybot S&D for years and ran that but it didn't work either. At the moment I've followed the 5 step program that was listed in the sticky and have all the log files. Below is the Deckard System Scanner Log file and extra .txt attachment. Please if anyone can help please do so, thanks.

Bump

I've tried a few things in the last couple of days. I've run Spybot and found both SmitFraud and Vundo and attempted to clean my pc with the fixes found in the self-help sticky. The Pop-ups are still happening happening but are now freezing out IE and causing the browser to crash.
I've re-run DSS and am re-uploading the new log file.

It mostly happens when I try to open my Hotmail and check my mail there. I checked the error report and it says the problem, or cause is:

szAppName : iexplore.exe szAppVer : 6.02600.0 szModName : hungapp szMonVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00000000

Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Hi,

I bought a AMD Athlon XP 2200 with fan and heatsink, a DFI AD77 Infinity Motherboard, case, and Windows XP. I have a Diamond Viper V770u AGP video card set at 4x. I am having problems. When my processor is clocked above 1700 Mhz, I keep getting Internet Explorer errors. They are a different module each time. Sometimes they occur while clicking on a link, other times while while scrolling. If I set my processor below 1700 Mhz it seems ok. The processor is rated at 1.8 and I would like to have it running at that. Also, sometimes on reboot, the monitor will go to sleep mode and not wake back up. I then have to reboot again to reactivate it. I am new to this so thanks for you patience and help.. Any ideas guys?

Roger

A:Internet Explorer errors

Well, it seems clear that it's a speed issue with your hardware, so your mission is to figure out which component is the problem. My top suspects would be processor overheating or defective RAM. I'd start by finding out what temperature the processor is running at, then look at the RAM.

Hi, I was wondering if someone has a solution for me. Ive had AOL 5.0 with IE 5.0 for a few months now with no problems. Recently, many of the web pages I visit(particularly those with photos/graphic images) produce an error called "Internet Explorer script error". I get the error frequently and while replying yes, I would like to keep running scripts on the page helps, it is quite annoying. I reinstalled AOL 5.0 over itself again and I also installed IE 5.01 over the IE 5.0 to no avail. Thanks for your help.

Robert

A:Internet Explorer Script Errors

Do this,

Start>Settings>CP>InternetOptions>Advanced. In the section titled "Browsing" select "Disable script debugging" and UN-select "Display a notification about every script error". Click on Apply.

The script errors are caused by the webpage and are not a problem with your system. If you do the changes above, you won't be bothered with the notification of the error.

I first posted this in the Windows XP forum and I was advised to come to this forum if disabling of plugins did not solve my problem.

I'm constantly getting dialog boxes popping up, saying "INTERNET EXPLORER HAS ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO SHUT DOWN". No matter if I click either button that says Debug, Send Error Report or Don't Send, I still get shut down, totally disconnected from from the internet.

I also get "iexplore.exe" error messages saying memory could not be written...or some such thing. After that I get shut down.

I have about three antivirus/antispyware programs and the last full scan was Monday 2:00 A.M. There was nothing found. Is the computer clean or not?

Here is my HT log. I don't know if it will help, Please let me know what else I should do. Thanks in advance.

Saturday I got the SecurityTool issue. Yesterday MalwareBytes removal got rid of at least part of it but when I am on sites I keep getting the HTTP404 error as I navigate thru the sites. Refreshing several times fixes the problem but I'm wondering if part of the SecurityTool issue is still playing havoc with my system? CCleaner, Microsoft Security Essentials, and Windows Defender programs are not finding anything wrong as I have green lights on all.

The above error is a memory exception. Probably by a driver.

Please run these two tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.
1-Memtest.

*Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

*Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

The script error when asks "Do you wish to Continue?"

A:Internet Explorer Script Errors

There are alot of webpages that will produce script errors due to bad webpage coding but you don't want to be notified of every one. Usually they don't make a noticable different in what you see on the page itself so be sure you have this setting unselected.

In InternetExplorer click on Tools>InternetOptions>Advanced. Scroll down and Unselect "Display a Notification about Every Script Error". Click on Apply.

Check this. In Internet Explorer click tools--internet options--advanced tab. See if "display a notification about every script error" is checked. If it is then uncheck it and click ok and see if that helps.

I have searched the archives and found suggestions for things I've already tried to fix IE 6 with all updates but still get a script error that prevents print preview and printing. Running XP. The error is Line 228, Error: Class doesn't support Automation with a URL: res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdocllc.dll/preview.dlg.

I've unchecked and checked the security/script boxes in IE options, re-installed the printer without postscript drivers, ran Spybot, AdAware.

Thanks for any help.

This all started after my dad installed norton anti-virus. I un-installed it and they still show up.
