Solved: Muffled Audio and System Sounds

Q: Solved: Muffled Audio and System Sounds

The only recent changes I've made to my computer is the newest update from Microsoft. When I log on to XP, the startup sound is fine, but the normal system sounds are very very muffled. I've checked the levels, and checked for conflicts, and nothing seems to be wrong. Aside from the system sounds, known wav files have the same very very low volume.

Using XP SP3, realtek 97. When I use the HRTF demo under the audio configuration, everything sounds fine. Just not sure why if all the levels are good, why things don't work.

Please help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Following the unsolved problem of muffled system sounds on XP using Realtek. I have fixed it by playing the offending wav file on Sound Recorder. Why this has fixed it beats me. When re-installing anything it is important to fully uninstall first - supporting files and registry entries can easily remain and these may be the problem. The problem must either be Sound Recorder or Realtek Control Panel as these were the only prorams used before the problem arose.

It seems every internet site is using the Adobe Flash Player these days. Every time I use it, I get sound that thumps and sounds like someone is playing it in a distant cupboard. I have no idea wghere to start except to say that Windows Media Player is as sweet as a bell so it's not the Creative sound equipment.

I should also add that I had Quake 4 running and had no problems with it. Concurrent with this problem raising it's head, I was unable to start Quake at all and it kept trying to load but then coming back to the Desktop so I took Quake off but still get the muffled noise.

Hello,I have some weird problem with my Lenovo Y50-touchscreen 4K. I have the laptop for about 3 years now, and today, while playing GTA V, when I started a new mission, it started "clicking" in a steady rhythm and the sound, only from the speakers (headphones works fine), has become muffled. I bought this Laptop from the US store (official website) but currently at Israel and they have an awful service (they damaged my last laptop 4 times in 4 different occasions....) so I really hope that it is something I could figure alone. Any ideas? * In any case, My exstended warranty ended about 6 months ago. Thanks.  Details:Lenovo Y-50 Touch Screen - 4K16 RAM500 SSDNVIDIA 860MWindows 10    By the way, I just found this video which show same problem:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7WzjYrInAk

Hi Shay4383,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
You can first start to run diagnostics to check on the integrity of the internal parts. One in particular is the harddrive so it would be interesting to isolate what is the part that cause the noise.
Update us how it goes.

I have a self-assembled desktop PC - full specs in the signature below, but in short, it has an AMD Phenom II X6 1090T processor on a Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P mainboard, which uses a Realtek Azalia ALC887 on-board sound system. I have no loudspeakers and listen to the computer sounds exclusively through a Microsoft LX-1000 headset. I also have a Logitech C270 HD webcam that has its own microphone. My PC has 16 GB RAM, a SSD and a large HDD. It runs Windows 8.1 Update 1 with all Windows updates (Patch Tuesday was this week, but my problems had started before that and I'm sure they're unrelated).

Everything is working fine, except the audio, which started behaving strangely a few days ago for no apparent reason. The problems started suddenly and I can't think of anything that could have caused them. There were no hardware changes or any intervention in the hardware, nor did I install any new software that could have messed up things.

When playing music, it sounds muffled, with the volume very low and the voice and several instruments muted, while other instruments in the background arrangement sound relatively louder. No graphic equalizer is on, and this happens with any player software (Windows Media Player, VLC, Media Player Classic, etc.), and any source (MP3 music, audio CDs, DVDs, videos, etc.). There appears to be no hardware problem with either my headset or the onboard audio: when I run both Windows' native and Realtek's driver sound output tests, the test tune comes out... Read more

So I've had this problem for a while now, with multiple headsets.
If I'm say, listening to music and on teamspeak or skype at the same time, the audio will kind of muffle, cut out the one ear or the other, and just generally go a little funny. Also sometimes when streaming with xsplit.
I have a Lenovo G560, and the headset I'm currently using is Steelseries Sibera V2, plugged into the audio and mic jacks.
If I have the microphone disabled via sound, the issue still occurs
I don't have this issue with USB headsets.

A couple of weeks ago the sound on my PC up and died, for no apparent reason. Ran all the diagnostics/troubleshooting, checked my drivers (went so far as to uninstall/reinstall) and as far as my 'system' was concerned everything was working fine. But no sound. As a side note, Window Media player give me a "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file." whenever I tried to play any music, but I don't get any errors with VLC, but still no sound. Sound tests get an error message when dealing with sound options in the Control Panel.

I am the dumb and have no restore points prior to my sound going as I failed to act when the sound initially died, and my most recent ones are post-sound death.

I searched online for other Windows 7 sound issues (and there were a lot), checked my system against the majority of the major issues, and the problems that others were experiencing (hardware compatibility issues/device manger setup and such) was not something I was experiencing.

I went so far as to reinstall Windows on a drive partition, and when I boot up using that OS I have sweet, glorious sound. So I figure that I have somehow borked something on my primary OS, that doesn't exist on the small partition.

Hi, I recently upgraded to windows 7 (from vista) on my HP Pavillion dv9000 series (specifically dv9850ea)

Beforehand when I ran the upgrade advisor, I got a few warning about incompatabilities - the graphics card for example - but all seems fine after the upgrade.

My problem is with the audio - system sounds work fine, audio from youtube for example, works fine... but when I play divx videos (still need to test other formats) there is no audio with either media player or divx player. Also when I play a song on itunes, it will just hang on 00:00 and go no further.

I know its not a driver issue, as some sounds ARE working... but im stumped!

It is probably one of a few things. a driver or codec, or configuration issue.
Just because sound works on some formats doesnt necessarily rule out a driver so I would check in device manager.

Codec--You may need one to plat the respective format, or you may have two codecs conflicting.

Config--something is configured incorrectly like a control panel

Try this one ( Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 Pro | H.264 Encoding | VC-1 Codec | Streaming Silverlight Video | IIS Smooth Streaming | Real Time Encoder | Microsoft® Expression® ). The free version does, however, have a 10 minute recording limit. If you need more time for the recordings, you'll need to buy the Pro edition ($199). But I would first try it out and check whether it does what you need.

My system specs are on my profile.

My integrated audio is: Realtek ALC898

I have used both the R2.71 driver from Realtek directly and Realtek High Definition Audio Driver from MSI both are the latest drivers available for Windows 8 64bit.

When playing music from any media player WMP, VLC, Winamp, etc.. The vocals are very muffled and the bass is way too high.

I have no options of lowering the bass. Changing the Equalizer in the Realtek HD Audio Manager to Treble helps out a little making vocals a tad clearer and dropping the bass.

My speaker system is a Altec Lansing 2.1 external speaker set using auxiliary.

I did not have these issues on Windows 7 64bit. Only experienced the problem on Windows 8.

Any suggestions or ideas?? I am running out of hope! I would prefer not to have to downgrade or get a dedicated sound card.

A:Audio Muffled & Bass too High

Win 8 uses the same drivers as Win 7 and should work the same.

What is "Altec Lansing 2.1 external speaker set using auxiliary"? You should be connecting the speaker system to the GREEN speaker jack only.

Do you have any Sound Effects enabled (in the RealTek HD Audio Manager)? Disable any if you do.

Did you install the Intel motherboard chipset drivers? The drivers need installed for proper operation, as one of the main things the drivers do is properly identify all the devices on the motherboard.

I have had this Inspiron 15 7559 laptop for over a year now and the audio has been fine, besides the odd crackle or pop here and there. However, after a Windows update, the audio has since become "muffled" whenever I try to watch youtube or movies, listen to spotify, or play any games. It's like the sound is very distant or like it was being played underwater, if that makes any sense. From what I can tell, Windows notification sounds appear to be unaffected. Audio works fine when I use headphones.
I have seen frequent directions on this forum to open the Device Manager and expand the "Sound, Video & Game Controllers" section, then right clicking on "Realtek High Definition Audio". But I do not see that present there, instead I see "Intel Display Audio", "NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device (Wave Extensible) (WDM), and "Realtek Audio" (unless this one qualifies?).
I am not sure whether I have made things more difficult trying other solutions posted on this forum and other troubleshooting forums, which has resulted in the Realtek High Definition Audio" disappearing or something.
In any case, I'm at my wits end here and would greatly appreciate any directions you can give me to find a solution to this problem.

This has been a persistent issue-- years ago, I experienced this on my Windows 7 pc (which I resolved years ago and no longer remember how I did it). Last night when I updated to Windows 10, the muffle came back happened again.

The issue is that only the audio from *streaming video* when paying through my speakers (not my Sound Blaster Tactic 3D Sigma headphones) comes through muffled and distorted. Audio from streaming audio is fine through the headphones, and system sounds play back fine.

I have a Sound Blaster Recon3d Xfinity Pro card.

I can't imagine this isn't a driver issue, but I uninstalled the Recon3D driver and allowed Windows 10 to do an auto-reinstall, and the problem persists.

Solutions online discuss Adobe flash, but if Adobe flash were the issue I'd be experiencing the same problem while listening through headphones. By process of elimination it seems to be a problem with the Recon3D drivers.

Anyone have any suggestions for me?

They have ALL occurred since I removed the virus using various programs recommended by tech people online. I did actually have sound while I had the virus, so my suspicion is that one of the programs designed to remove the viruses removed something else that it shouldn't have. This has been a problem for me for a few months now, but it's just getting unbearable.
So, here's the situation:Oftentimes, my headphones give out muffled audio. It makes it virtually impossible to make out human speech, and just generally isn't very good. In the past, I could fix this by adjusting the headphone jack somewhat, but over time I've had to do it more violently and I'm concerned at this point that I'll harm the computer if I continue doing it. Now, whenever it happens, I have to wiggle the jack around with a decent amount of force to get it to work properly.
I'm not particularly good with computer hardware, so I'm not entirely sure what the exact issue could be. If you need any more information, just ask. I'd be happy to provide it. Any help is appreciated.

Am experiencing a problem very new to me .... Lately the sound on my computer (xp svs pk 3) is jittery or cracklie sounding. I thought I had "blown" my speaker, but to my great disappointment, I plugged in earphones tonight and it bad through the earphones too. I can't tell you when it started happening because I dismissed it as being self inflicted (speaker blown).

The only thing I have done is to replace my keyboard (my setup is reconditioned emachine) because quite a few letters on the keys themselves have or are beginning to wear off and the family members that don't know touch typing (like my husband ) have been complaining. LOL

I picked up a curbside hp internet keyboard (a hp #5185 1596 Internet Keyboard) with a variety of new buttons (I have not yet customized to my preferences) including buttons like we see on the media players play reverse, ff, volume control up/down a tiny button with a musical note and a tiny button with a speaker on it.

Could this new-to-me keyboard be causing trouble with the computers existing audio set up? idk ? Im just a dummy....

Thank you so much for helping me out ... I have always loved all you all here at tsf!!

Update your audio drivers. Or maybe your line connections are ruined a bit or not plugged in? But that doesn't seem likely because you used headphones and speakers. Could be something inside the computer. I highly doubt your keyboard would be causing this.

I know it could be a failing soundcard that has lost its cdrom capability, but before I switch that, I thought I'd ask if anyone knows what else I can check.

Hello, this just happened today.
I got on my computer, and the system sounds weren't working. There was no log in sound, or chime when receiving Outlook e-mails, etc.
All sound works just fine, like Pandora or iTunes, it's just the system sounds.

In the sound settings, where you can modify the system sounds, when I clicked test, it still didn't work. I went to C:/windows/media, and all the sounds there played just fine, so they aren't corrupted.

Any ideas on what's wrong here?

Hi, go to start ,search and type cmd, right click on the returned cmd.exe and select "run as administrator" at the prompt copy paste:-

reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32" /v wavemapper /s > 0 & notepad 0
press enter

I own at Pentium 4 XP Home Edition PC. Recently, I lost all of my default system sounds--like boot up sound and closing sound. The sound card is okay, because I can play CDs, listen to Real Player and otherwise get sounds.

I have gone into the sounds and audio devices properties panel and don't seem to be able to set it to play the sounds. The test button works the sounds fine, but I cannot actually activate them!

I have troubleshooted by surfing the web, installing various supposed registry fixes. I have also read the Microsoft data base articles that seem to pertain. SO FAR NOTHING HAS HELPED.

Can anyone suggest what I do short of reinstalling Windows? I don't want to take that drastic step!

Thank you.

first off, sound works on my old external speakers, still does if i set the settings to it (back green input)
now with removing those speakers and using the speakers inside my new monitor, the sound of everything works except for system sounds like "shuting down windows" sound and "start up windows" sound for example.
in dxdiag the sound test doesnt work either offcourse and drivers are still set to the on board sound card of the PC.
the screen itself doesnt have drivers according to LG ; it uses plug and play monitor drivers given by windows. by the way this old PC still uses xp.
any ideas?
thanks beforehand

A:Solved: system sounds gone after installing new monitor

Most monitors with speakers have a cable to connect to the audio output (green port). The PC doesn't know or care what is connected to the green port. You can swap speaker sets, headphones, monitor cables, it doesn't matter and no drivers are required.

How is the monitor connected to the PC?

I have just built a system with the following Specs:

Core i7 930
Asus Rampage III Extreme
Creative 5.1 Speaker system
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

I can open the sound and test the speakers fine, I can play music and watch videos fine. However I do not hear any System sounds at all, I have tried changing system sounds and re-installing the device driver (Realtek High definition Audio but still no system sounds, anyone have any Ideas.

A:[SOLVED] Windows 7 Ultimate 64 No System Sounds

OK, you can ignore this one, I have figured it out, I deleted the realtek driver again and then let windows install it instead of using the one on the support CD, not sure why it worked as both drivers seem to be the same version.

A:trouble hearing sounds other than system sounds

try uninstalling your sound card from your device manager and check if your card is seated properly in the slot. re-install and boot.
if problem persists call a doctor. lol.

I've got a weird one: I hooked the HDMI from the PC to the television and get great picture, but the sound is weird. I get system "dings" and whatnot, but I don't get the audio from games or YouTube videos. I've already tried setting the default audio device to the HDMI port, but I get sound from the speakers on the PC, not via HDMI.

The video card is an EVGA 750 Ti SC, running on a Biostar HiFi A85W.

A:Get system sounds, but NO YouTube or game sounds. Help?

If you have the Default Audio Playback Device set as HDMI then you should be getting sound only from HDMI. Sounds like that is not happening.

You should have the NVDIA High Definition Audio and the regular PC audio (whatever that is) shown in the Device Manager, Sounds section. If you do not have NVIDIA High Defintion Audio, or only the generic Windows installed "high Definition audio driver (codec) shown for the HDMI audio that could be the problem.

Uninstall the Video Card, in the Device Manager (do not uninstall the drivers) then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the Video Card. See if this corrects the problem. If not, install or reinstall the latest NVIDIA driver.

I am using the trial version of Audio Mid Recorder and when i record anything from like lets say, youtube or even from a radio station it comes out sounding very thin, as if it was recorded from a pair of head phones. All audio devices seem to be in working order.
ok, I just found out why it's sounding thin is because it was recording through the mic head set. Now I disabled the headset but still on the recorder the source device on the drop down option for recording device it is not listed.

A:Audio Mid Recorder audio sounds thin and fraily

I thought that this was disable to plug the analog hole, so that people could not record what they are hearing from their sound card...basically going around copy protection.

I think they started it with Vista, I could be wrong.
