Help with writing files to DVD/CD because of problem.

Q: Help with writing files to DVD/CD because of problem.

I believe I have a virus on my PC. There were 100's up popups all over my screen. The day prior I had removed Norton Internet Security, installed Zone Alarm.. and had intended to return the following day and install Avast. but.. unfortunately I didn't get to before this happened.

I'm able to boot up in safe mode and tried a system restore to the prior day (to the problem) but upon rebooting my screen went black after the windows loading screen. Now, I guess system restore doesn't solve problems like this, but in the past it'd fixed anything I'd done before.

Rebooted again into safe mode and all my files are there. Is there a way to copy files in safe mode to dvd or cd? or fix the problem?

If I have to reinstall the OS, I must retrieve some pictures that hadn't been backed up.

Any advice or assistance would be appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Help with writing files to DVD/CD because of problem.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey, any help with this would be so appreciated.

My sister wrote an 8 page paper for one of her college finals. When she tried to save it to a cd, her file got completely erased or something. I was wondering...is there some sort of file that these files get written to before they get written to the cd? In other words, might her paper still be hidden in some file somewhere? Please help!

Hello, I am trying to find a way to save documents on a CD-RW. These files are medical records under the patient's name. When they are seen again, I so far see no way to copy/save the file without having to overwrite the first file unless I change the file name somehow, but I need to keep all these records. Is there a way to set it up to save all files, or is there some other mode out there that would serve my purpose? Also, I have resource files, as in doctor's names, addresses, etc, that are constantly being updated. How do I just save the updated file and not keep the old one?

As well, there seem to be a lot of programs out there to burn music files etc, but I am interested to know if there is one for data files.

Thanks for any help.

I am trying out a few things with a .bat file, and I seem to be running into some issues. The . bat file that I am creating is going to be made to execute 2 files. That part I have down. The issue that I am having is that one of the programs that the .bat file executes defaults to the notification tray area upon opening, and I would like to make it open to the desktop only when running my .bat file. Is there a command to automatically open a program to the desktop? I tried WinSet, Top, but had no luck. I may also want to add in a progress bar eventually to see what % the program has run, so any tips on that would be appreciated as well.

Hi everybody :)
I think this post fits in here,if not, please do move it to a more appropriate section. I have downloaded two iso files- grub rescue cd image and gparted cd image. When I try to write them onto a cd only one is selectable, I can't choose both. Is this how it should be? Or is there a way to write both images onto a cd in such a way that they both run from the cd? The grub rescue cd image and the gparted cd image both into one bootable cd I mean.*Sorry about my bad english, I hope I expressed myself clearly*. Or should I just use two cd's to burn them once each?

I have an .xml that is associated with an app. Everytime I shut down the app. that .xml file is written to, which I am trying to avoid, because it is changing some values I want to keep. Jasong, something tells me that if the program internally has to write something to a file, then unless you can get into the program options or the source code. your going to be out of luck. Unless there is some kind of configuration file that can be setup or the program can be executed with some command line parms.

The App is probably keeping track of usage or execution times.

Good People,

I seem to be having an issue in Vista that I can't find anywhere (I searched and couldn't find it, please link it if I missed it). Files don't seem to be writing properly to my HDD when I download them. For example, I bought MS Money and downloaded it from their website. When I tried to open it I was told the CAB file was corrupt. I tried re-downloading several times and received the same error. So I went to my laptop (which runs XP) and downloaded the exact same file, transferred it to a flash drive and copied it to my Vista machine. I was able to install it no problem. So I've been doing this for a lot of other applications that seem to get "corrupted" when downloading to my HDD.

Additionally when I tried using a newsreader any binaries I tried downloading were corrupted as well. I would say it was my machine but this is the second one I'm having the exact same issue with. I'm about to give away my laptop and would rather not have to borrow it back every time I wanted to download a new program. Any suggestions out there? My computer specs if they'll help:

HP Pavilion a6152n
Windows Vista Home Premium
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU @ 2.40GHz
400 GB HDD
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS (320 MB)

A:Files not writing properly to HDD

There is more than one reason that could make this possible.

- Try to cleanup your browser and delete your temporary files.

- Try to download file manager software go to --> freewarefiles.com and look for download manager which can make your download much faster and more efficient.

- Try to disable your Antivirus and download the file again.

I have a Compac Presario tower=OEM with windows XP.. We can copy files to a floppy easy & quick.. When we try to copy files/data to a CD, I have been using the Sonic Program. I would like to be able to copy a file and add more files with a couple of quick clicks. Steps we take now.
My Documents=Click file. Click copy to CD. Click the drive. Click Copy. My Computer next. Right click on the drive. Click- Write these files to CD.
Wizard comes up. Click next. Takes 25 sec. 1 file.
Isn't there an easier way?

A:Writing files/data to a CD

You can install a UDF writer program (packet writer) like InCD (Sonic's product is called DLA) and use drag-and-drop with CD-RW discs. There are also UDF programs that let you use normal CD-Rs, but they are rather flaky in my experience.

You can't have simple drag and drop with normal ISO CDs, because the ISO 9660 filesystem is not really suitable for storing data Writing a new session for every dropped file would eat up your disk space very fast.

Hi All,

I have a really challenging problem here and I'm so frustrated with it that I'd love some help!

Running windows 7 and the computer keeps hanging, but I don't mean freezing. The window that I'm on will fade and the blue circle will come up as if explorer is having problems accessing something, then it will become unstuck and be fine again for a minute or two. This is much worse if in a game or another program.

In eventvwr I can see it's giving lots of errors saying writing to files is taking abnormally long. Note that it's managing to do it but taking ages, hence then hanging rather than the freezing or crashing.

Fixes tried:
I thought of course that it was a hard drive problem so I've tried different sata cables and even a freshly formatted different hdd but I'm still getting the same problem.

Should I be thinking about a new motherboard? This was a mobo/ram/cpu bundle from overclockers just back in March so I'm hoping it's not a hardware problem at all but it's looking more likely.

I've also ran Samsung's hdd utility which found nothing on the first pass but then said there was a problem on the second, but that was only because the computer hung again during the test, not because there's errors on the drive.

I did have this problem a wee while back but not as bad. I re-seated the sata cable and it died down after that but this time it's worse and it's not going away!

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated as I'm at my wit's end with this!!

Hi guys, I'm having a two fold issue that seems to stem from the issue in windows 7 where it wont allow you to over-write a file after opening it up for editing. Hopefully this topic has been discussed to death here and my google searches were oblivious to the answer, but im not able to find it. We've been turning off the preview pane by "changing views" in the windows explorer (which i might add, windows seven likes to "Forget" and return it to ITS' desired settings) but now im also having problems saving simple meta-data into files such as keywords and tags in adobe bridge and i believe its related to this very same issue. It's as tho a "preview" is being generated somewhere, (else?) and now that we've turned the preview pane off, i cannot tell where its coming from. Does anyone know if this is related to "windows aero peek?" or any of those "advanced" settings in visual performance tab of the "My computer" properties?

any help is as always, greatly appreciated,

Hey all,

Im currently working on a macro of rather large size and im a little stuck at the moment.
The endgoal of the macro is to have a clean file out of all the mess and that can be mailed to other pple of my staff. Now here it comes:
In my example there are 3 tabs: Raw file, Database and Endfile. The point of the whole macro is to look up some things between Raw file and Database and then to write it to the Endfile. The Raw file and the Database are allready macromade and all three sheets have a layout that cant be changed.
--> First thing is that i need to check if the Rapprt N in column L of the Raw file is somewhere in the Database file at column M (CINCUS).
--> IF the number is there I need to check the type wich can be found at column S (CINSTA)
--> IF THEN that type is 7 then it has to be written away to Endfile, what has to be written away is colored blue in my example.
--> IF THEN that type is 8 it has to be written away to the sheet "Type 8" for further investigation, the data is the same (blue colored)
--> IF the number is not found it has to be written away to the sheet "Not Found" with also the same data.

I think thats it, its much i know. But im stuck in finding all the formulas and stuff. So some help is greatly appreciated. Thx in advance.

Check in your BIOS for the settings of that drive. It should have LBA enabled.
Also, your BIOS might not be able to handle such a big drive (might go over the 1024 sector boundary), look for a BIOS-update from the motherboards manufacturer that may deal with this problem.

so I have issues about hidden files (I always want to see them), and I'm particularly annoyed by this desktop.ini file. As if it wasn't enough that there is one in almost every folder, in Windows 7 there are TWO of them on my desktop!

Also, Windows 7 is always trying to burn/write that file on every removable media I have, including USB memory sticks, external hard drives, CD's, DVD's (and the fact that they aren't rewritable and have been burned and closed by the factory doesn't seem to stop it from getting that file ready to be written to disc), etc. Am I the only one thinking this is insane?

My question is simple - how do I stop Windows 7 from ever creating another one of these files again (that is, until next reinstall or some such thing, I'm just trying to be dramatic)?

Yes, I know I will lose some customization functions, but the fact is - I don't need them (which is why I want to see hidden files - to delete them if I don't need them). I know what's in what folder, thank you very much. And yes, I know I can go to Control Panel and set it to not show hidden files, but that's exactly what I don't want.

So, just show me which option to un-check and I'll be happy and I'll buy you some e-beer.

Hi all,

I am trying to achieve the following functionality using VBA code:

Create a text file
Store a string in that text file, the string itself being contained in a String variable.
(Then I actually run a batch file using the Shell command which will call that particular string from the text file just created and execute certain functionality)
Delete the created text file

(This whole creation and deletion of text file is actually taking place within a Do Until loop. This is being done as I cannot figure out any direct way to pass parameters to a batch file at the same time that I am executing it, using the Shell command. Thus the text file acts as a workaround to that problem.)

Can anyone please also shed some light on how to read a string stored in a text file from a batch file. I am just hoping that this step itself is not too complicated.

A:Creating, Writing to and Deleting Text Files

You can pass a string argument to a batch file using:

shell "path to batch.bat " & chr(34) & strArgument & chr(34)

Where the string is stored in a string variable.

To read and write to a text file use:

Dim fNum as long
Open "filepath.txt" for Output as fNum
Write fNum, strString
Close fNum

To delete use:

Kill "path to file.txt"

I've been having a lot of trouble lately with a SCSI hard drive. I hope someone out there can help. Occasionally (this seemed to happen when the drive was getting full, but I'm not sure that had anything to do with it) when I would try reading from the drive, the activity light would stay on for a while and I would get the error that I referred to in the subject line.

After this would happen, I would run scandisk. Most of the time, it stated that both copies of FAT did not match, but it seemed to fix it without much trouble.

The hard drive is a Quantum 4.3GB partitioned into two FAT32 2GB sections (F: & H . The SCSI card is an AdvanSys Ultra Wide adapter. I have an external scanner and an internal CD-R drive that are SCSI as well. As far as I know the termination is correct.

To try and fix the problem, I backed up my data and repartitioned and formated the drive. I thought that had worked, but I'm still getting the same errors.

Is my hard drive dead? Should I try a low-level format? Buy a new SCSI card? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I got the Buffalo LinkStation(network storage) yesterday.I immediately connected it to my router, and set it up.All worked fine until I tried to move my movie collection(average file size 700 MB).It first said it will take 5 minutes, but after 1 minute it froze, saying it couldnt connect to the LinkStation. My Laptop(Vista Home Premium 32bit,Asus X72V) then disconnected from the router(also no internet).after reconnecting i tried a music file, which was transferred in a matter of seconds.
My other Laptop doesnt disconnect, although writing to Linkstation is awfully slow...

What can i do?
(In the moment i directly connect over ethernet-less than a hour for 50 GB-i have a modern laptop,300 mb wlan)

I was just clearing some stuff off my comp yesterday to make some space, and I found a "Downloads" folder in my "Favourites" folder. I thought it was just a shortcut, so I deleted it and then found it deleted everything in my actual downloads folder and I'd already emptied the recycle bin.

I did a System Restore and it got my downloads folder back and everything in it, but I think it's messed up some installer stuff. I downloaded the latest Second Life update and tried to install it and I get the error "NSIS Error writing temporary file. Make sure your temporary file is valid".

I only get the error with this version of Second Life though. I can install the previous version. Other errors include some "Windows Installer" errors saying "The Windows Installer service cannot be accessed", or some programs like Google Earth do nothing when I try to install them.

Some programs install, others give me these errors.

Tried searching and downloading and reinstalling Windows Installer 4.5 and did the misexec.exe /unregister thing in cmd that's on the Microsoft website, but still nothing.

Check you have folders C:\Windows\Temp and C:\Users\<your account>\AppData\Local\Temp.Check also you have correct declared variables in Environment Variables (Control Panel>>System>>Advanced System Settings)

(I have different settings than original becaused I moved C:\Windows\Temp a while ago)

I have got a Benq Cd writer(20*10*40). My problem is I am unable to write data Cd's (data from harddisk) of more than 650MB capacity even though the Cd's I use are of 700MB. If I do write the Cd gets damaged. For CD to CD writing I am able to write.

I use Nero 5.5.3 original version ( I have even checked its settings but there was no use) & windows Xp writing software. This problem also had started recently and also only for data CD's and not for audio CD's.

I have got a Pentim 4 system with Windows Xp. 40 GB hard disk and 256MB RAM.

You may need a firmware upgrade for your CD drive, and I'd cruise over to Nero's website and download the update to the current version of Nero, it should be free.

Hey techguys,

I'm trying to help my sister with a problem she's having with writing CDs. I drag the files to the CD drive and they appear in that drive's folder fine, but when I try to press the 'Write these files to CD' button I just get a bleeping sound.

I've used this process on my laptop multiple times and have had no problems with it.

Her laptop is an HP Pavillion dv8372ea

Have you tried re-installing software?
Or trying another burner software altogether to see if its the software or the drive itself?

I'm looking for help with a problem getting my DVD writer to recognise blank DVDs.

I can read and write CDs no problem and the drive will read already written DVDs(films, software etc). However when I insert a blank DVD the drive just keeps trying to access(green light on drive keeps flashing and drive is spinning) the DVD.

I am using DVD+R discs and have never had a problem in the past.

The drive is an Emprex 16X dual layer reader/writer. I have run the driver update and apparently the drivers are the most recent.

It may something simple or the drive might be just broken, but any help, advice or info would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I have a problem with an LG SuperMulti 22x drive. All the dvds i try to write with Windows 7 built in software fails when there is roughly 30s left of the burn.

I tries Nero as well but the writes also fail. It is a brand new drive, is there any way to test it? I installed Windows and device drivers using it and it seemed to work fine.

Any ideas?

Hi - have you AHCI enabled in the bios? If so it could be the driver Microsoft installs automatically during install - to fix this go to the below site and download and install the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver if you haven't already installed it.
I think its updated with the chipset drivers now, so you could update them firstly, and see if that fixes the problem if not install the rapid storage driver - available on the same support page below.

You could try this microsoft fix if you have the rapid storage driver already installed assuming its suitable :

Your CD or DVD drive can't read or write media

My supervisor has a laptop with a removable cd-rom, Compaq cd-rom CRN-8245B. He has used it to burn CD's in the past, and it has stopped writing discs. A blank disc says, "Cannot copy files: Files on this CD-Rom are read-only. You cannot copy or move files to this CD-Rom drive." when try to copy files to it. Has it quit working, it still reads discs, any suggestions? Thanks.

The CRN-8245B is only a CD-ROM drive not a CD-R/RW drive. Is that the correct model number or do you have another drive?
