Q: XPS 15 - Dell Support Assist keeps installing the same drivers over and over

Hi, no matter how many times I follow SupportAssist's recommendation to install:
Docks/Stands Intel Thunderbolt Controller Driver
Chipset - Intel Serial IO Driver
Chipset - Intel Management Engine Interface Driver
and then reboot, it keeps telling me I need those drivers.
It did download and install a new Intel Video driver which hasn't reappeared.
Laptop: Brand new XPS 15 QHD display, windows 10. TIA
PS why the ridiculous number of "I am not a robot" Captcha pictures and puzzles !!! :-)

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

Yesterday I clean installed the Dell factory image using reset PC. All went well but when I checked Reliability History it showed an unsuccessful application reconfiguration warning for Dell Data Vault when Dell Support Assist was installed. During Dell Support Assist installation there was an earlier successful application installation and reconfiguration of Dell Data Vault (version 4.3.7.0) but that was successfully removed 15 minutes later for Dell Data Vault (version 4.3.8.0) ...this was when the unsuccessful application reconfiguration warning was flagged.At the same time  a successful application removal message for Dell data Vault (version 4.3.8.0). is also shown. Im not sure if that means now that I don't have Dell Data Vault installed.
Is this anything to be concerned about? Im not even sure what Dell Data Vault does. Is there anything I need to do or will it successfully update itself later on?

I updated 2 drivers that Support Assist recommended.    I checked them off and then d/l them.  Upon completion, I received the window message to Restart my computer.  
I then ran Support Assist again to check for optional drivers.  
Support Assist RECOMMENDED that I UPDATE THE SAME 2  DRIVERS that I just D/L!!!!
This is not the first time this has happened to me.  
Why did my Drivers not UPDATE?    My computer said when it was being Queued and D/L followed by to Reboot.

Dell Support "Assist" just ran without giving me an option to stop, pause, or control in anyway.  It was using nearly all computer resources (I could barely save the word document I had open at the time).  This isn't "assist" more like computer take over.

How can I control the S. "Assist"?  How can I adjust the time between it's runs (currently it looks like monthly)?  After finishing it's scan or whatever it finally closed (cuz it wouldn't close the 20 times or so I clicked the "X").  I then opened it, looking for some results of the scan, and found none.  How can I view results?

Right now, seems like worthless bloatware.

Also, there is not a [New Post] button on the Laptop Forum (at least for me).

Hi,
I have the above laptop and I just reinstalled OS with the OEM disc problem is hat I do not have the driver disc. I have been into my Dell and use the support assist to pick the drivers for my laptop. Problem is that it still shows a lot of drivers and many are not for my machine.

I did call Dell figuring that is I had to I would pay for the support and I was told that my laptop was considered "end of life" and they offered no support free of pad. But they did send me a link on how to use supportt assist to find the drivers whish is useless.

If I go into my device manager and click on the ones I need and open up the hardware info and number could someone direct myself to the correct drivers?

Install the drivers under "chipset" -- starting with the intel HM67 driver, followed by a reboot:
www.dell.com/.../drivers
Under System Utilities, install the motion sensor driver.
For bluetooth and network, go to "Original Configuration" and identify the card installed.  Then install the corresponding drivers from the link above.  DO NOT just guess or try at random - you must identify the driver and install the correct one.

Running on a new XPS 8900.  Whenever Dell Support Assist runs, a Blue Screeen of Death appears.  I am now experiencing a Windows Blue Screen of Death daily -- it appears to be running automatically every 12 to 24 hours..
The Windows minidump identifies the failures as coming from the address GenHC.sys+1509ewhich is adriver to support a USBSer device.  I've contacted the vendor to see if they can provide a fix, no new updates are on their website.
SO, how can I either get a version of Dell Support Assist  that does not trigger the BSOD?
Or how can I prevent Dell Support Assist from running? 
1)  Is there an option to disable it 
2) What should I uninstall?
Win10 shows Dell SupportAssist 1.1.6664.93 is installed.

I had same issue with Alienware 15 R2 purchased just 5 days back. Daily within 12-24 hrs BSOD was occurring. Finally got some clue in windows 10 Event Viewer and got it confirmed that Dell Support Assist was the culprit. I could reproduce BSOD by just starting the Support Assist application and wait for few seconds. Finally, I uninstalled the Dell Support Assist and Dell Support Assist Agent.

I have a new, core i7, 7th gen dell laptop and i recently have had a problem with it. When i turn on my dell, i see the black and white dell logo for about 12 seconds, and then SupportAssist automatically pops up. It says
" Hard drive - Not installed ".
When i click on the continue button, it brings me to a screen that tells me to press the play button (on the lower part of the screen) to run tests. Every time i come upon this screen, it freezes up and then shuts off my pc automatically. What do i do??? (Please awnser this ASAP)

This problem showed up in Dell Support Assist after Window Update installed several updates to my Win 8.1 new Dell 8700 desktop. I haven't done anything to install McAfee again. I checked Program Files and McAfee is installed once. I do not know what to do to correct this. I checked Windows Uninstall in Control Panel and it shows McAfee once in the list of programs that can be uninstalled.
Weird!  Does anyone have any ideas how to correct this problem? Has anyone else experienced this problem?
Any help would be appreciated. I've worked with PC's since 1983 and have extensive experience in troubleshooting. This has me stumped though.

Are they both the same process, or is McAfee running 2 different processes for different functions that get listed separately in Support Assist?

I have a Dell Inspiron 14R 5421, upgraded to Windows 10 SL. Recently, a lot of blue screens are occurring on my laptop.
I have observed that it happens every time when Dell's Support Assist application starts running in background or when I run it manually.
The error is always: KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE
Is there any solution to fix this?

In the “Advanced Options” window left click or tap on the “Startup Settings” feature.
Left click or tap on the “Restart” button situated in the lower right side of the screen.
Now your operating system should boot with the minimum system requirements.

Hello to all,   I recently did a clean reinstall of Windows XP (Home) on my Dell Dimension 2350. All went fine. Now I need to install the correct drivers. I have the Dell Resource disc and this is where the problem starts.    As noted elsewhere, after the reinstall the screen display of the Resource disc is as it would be in "Safe Mode". I was aware of this. As such, the Resource disc Search Criteria screen was a bit larger than the monitor screen. I was able to size it to fit the screen but this is really not the problem it is the following: The Search Criteria options I have from the drop down menus (on screen) are as follows:System Model:   All, Dimension C521, DXC061, Dimension DXP0G1, Dimension E521, DM061, XPS710    (Which, if any, do I pick?)Operating System: (I think I got this one)   All, Windows XPTopic:   (Maybe this one too)   All, Applications, Dell Diagnostics, Diagnostics, Drivers, Utilities   For the life of me I cannot figure out the exact drivers I am to install*. A:Installing drivers after Windows XP reinstall on Dell Dimension 2350 using Dell Resource disc

You need, in installation order:

Chipset driver
Video driver (depends on which video card)
Audio driver
Network driver (depends on which you have)
Modem driver, if you use a dialup modem

Go to the Support page and put in your Service Tag. It should give you the drivers you need. You can download them on any PC and copy onto a USB stick for installation on the 2350.
You only need the applications, if you actually use them (eg, Roxio, Jasc Paintshop, etc).
Then install your antiviral software and get online to the Microsoft Update site for all the patches and updates.
Keep in mind that XP is no longer supported by Microsoft and they stopped releasing security fixes for XP and IE9, more than 1 year ago. So they're both full of security holes and put your personal data at risk.

my machine is dell dimension with windows xp sp2.recently, as advised by dell people, i uninstalled the old 'dell support' and ind installed new 'dell support center'
but on restart i got BSOD and had to restore back.i tried it five times but always with the same result.currently i'm without any means to get help from dell, should i need it.

The BSOD error message in its entirety would be a good thing and one thought on this and this might solve the problem quicker, since Dell tech support told you to upgrade to the new help center and it went south I am only suggesting this because I have worked in tech support before (not with Dell) I would contact Dell tech support and have the BSOD error message ready for them. The tech support usually has all or most of the solutions for their software handy right there in thier database, and this will solve the problem a lot faster than here.

(Please pardon my redundancy - I have posted this to the Customer Care Board and Client Service forums - just hoping to correct what I hope was an accidental change in support policy.)
This is not a technical comment but it is a comment about Dell's Technology Support. Recently the support site for laptops, and I presume other areas though I have not checked, was revised to change its structure. In the process many items were removed notably having to do with drivers for older systems. Even if a system is past warranty that does not remove the responsibility for Dell to continue to provide the most recent (even if old) drivers especially since the cost of doing so is trivial. This is especially the case when Dell is the only source for specific drivers. A specific example is a Dell Vostro 3700 laptop which uses the embedded GPU in the CPU as well as outboard nVidia GPU; the hybrid video architecture is such that NVidia provides no driver and re-directs users to Dell's site. In the case of this specific model, most of the drivers that were present a month ago are now gone.
Dell laptops have two things going for them - good products at a good price and a great support site. This has prompted me to continue focusing upon Dell - e.g. two new 5759's in 2017, and to recommend Dell to colleagues and friends. Hello I'm trying to install a new radeon vid card from Dell, following the instructions with the card I unistalled ( which doesn't make much sense since I can still use the onboard display) the old graphics card. Installed the new card, plugged in power plugged in one of the monitors and got nothing when booting into windows. I take the card out and I can still use the computer as if nothing has happened. Am I missing an uninstall, install step here or what? I'm no longer sure how to even boot windows 10 into safe mode. But not that would matter if I get no signal/display from the new card. Should I install the drivers from the accompaning CD from visiontek to get it work properly?

I'm just tired of this new computer already.  Why did support assist popup on a computer that was a day old.  Laptop got stuck when a new standard user signed in.  Had to hard power off after waiting a few minutes.  Then hard power off a few more times to get rid of the support assist at start up.  Then finally the computer boots.  OMG really hard power offs a few times fixed the problem.  I didn't want to go through the learning experience of see support assist fixed the computer.  OMG support assist caused the problem.
Later.
I finally sign in with standard user Dell pops up a dialog asking  to download and install new software.  OMG you are not allowed to ask standard users to install missing software.

So here I am maybe I return it the day after tomorrow.  

Later I've got the standard user that locked up at boot deleted and I've wasted 8 hours just watching the computer update but still feel like I should return it.  Maybe fdisk a hidden sector a say the hard drive is the wrong size.

I've recently run into a "No bootable devices found" error everytime I try to boot my laptop, after successfully running diagnostics and finding no errors I attempted manually lanching the Support Assist OS Recovery tool. However, I had to authenticate my microsoft account before continuing by typing in my password. Yet when I did so I simply got denied with an error of "Can't pass authentication. Make sure your account's status is correct." I am not sure what I am doing wrong here, how do I solve this?

What is the make and model of the Dell, do you have a Dell Asset tag #? Write that info down and go to a working computer with internet access and download the Ethernet driver for your computer from Dell http://support.dell.com/support/down...=us&l=en&s=gen onto a flash drive and install it on this computer. Once that is installed then you can go to the Dell Support site to download any other drivers your missing in the Device Manager (sound, Video, chipset etc) with this computer.

Update went successful, loaded back up laptop, and the update is STILL showing as not installed on the HP support assistant. A:HP BIOS Update for Intel Processor (F43) - HP SUPPORT ASSIST...

That is likely to be a bug in the HP Support Assistant. My product loan Spectre 13 shows a number of updates, available, but already installed on specific dates. You can safely ignore the updates without having any issues.

Hi,

I reformatted my Dell Inspiron 1440 laptop yesterday and did a clean install of the Vista Home Basic 64 bit OS. Next, I need to install the drivers, but I'm not sure which ones are already installed and which ones I need to install off the Drivers and Utilities CD or the Dell website.

When I put in the Drivers and Utilities CD, it showed a list of drivers on the CD and tickmarks next to a few drivers which meant that it scanned these devices existed on my laptop. So I installed the three drivers which showed the tickmarks - ATI graphics, WLAN, and Bluetooth.

The rest of the drivers don't have tickmarks on them. So I'm not sure if they match my laptop or not, and whether I should install or not. I mean, my little manual says I have IDT 92HD81 audio, but on the CD and website (under my service tag) it gives the number as IDT 92HD71B. Can I install this even though the number is different?

Second question - do I need to install chipset, network, camera, touchpad, and other drivers too? How do I know what to install and whats already installed?

Please help, I'm really confused.

Windows will install drivers for devices it supports by itself. So in addition you will need the drivers for the devices Windows Vista does not support, or for which the manufacturer has a better driver than the Vista driver.
The easiest way to decide which ones are still required is to look at the device manager, and look for devices that show an error, or that are listed in the "Other devices" category.
By checking the hardware ID or device description, you can determine which devices are involved.
You can also use software, like a driver finder program, which scan your computer hardware and show drivers that are either missing or out-dated. Those programs are not free though. But you can at least run a free scan and see what is missing

There is a 7-character "service tag number" on the sticker on the case.

Go here and enter that number. It will bring up the support and software site that's specific only to your Dell. Go to the drivers and downloads section and look for the device drivers that you need.

Are you sure about Inspiron being the correct model name and 1445 being the correct model number?

(ON DELL DIMENSION 4550)so i just reinstalled windows on a new hard drive and im at the point where i have to install/update drivers. On the device manger there are 3 devices with a ?and! : Ethernet Controller,Multimedia Audio controller, and PCI Input device. I have the resource cd but i don't know how to update the drivers. any help is appreciated

Put the resource CD in and Device Manager Right click on the device and select update driver, when prompted select the CD drive as the target to search.

Need urgent help!

I've a Dell Latitude 5420 - but don't have Wifi drivers installed on it. So tried downloading the drivers using my service tag (JYSC8R1) ... Intel(R) WiFi Link 6200 v15.6.1 (A04) April 11, 2013 but this fails. Following is the log.

try running the drivers install as Admininistrator. Acording to dell this is a fairly new PC. Why do you need to install the drivers? Did you have to reinstall Windows? If so What version is on there now?

Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Series 5559.
To get rid of the crapware I've done a clean install, but I want to install some drivers from the Dell web site. I've downloaded the files, but if I try to extract or install them I get an error, see image attached.
When I open the location they were extracted to, there are no files there!
I note in the install log that it has a personality error as below, not sure if this is relevant:

Hi, I've this laptop to repair and I''m facing big trouble to find drivers and possibly to find some hardware issues with it. First I ran diagnostics within setup and found that DVD drive is bricked. I removed it. Also I got BSOD with WHEA_... some message which said that Win has problems with some hardware or drivers. OK, I replaced thermal paste and currently I'm not getting this problem. Realtek FE driver I tried to install couple versions but it says me device cannot start - error code 10. Also there is problem with the Bluetooth adapter driver. What can I do to fix it. Thank you.

Further to my thread regarding removing the crapware on my new Dell: New Dell PC: Removing Crapware?

I've done a clean install, and want to install some drivers from the Dell web site. I've downloaded the files, but if I try to extract or install them I get an error, see image attached.

We have a Dell XPS 9350 that has randomly been popping up a message window from Dell Support Assist saying that it has detected a failing component that requires immediate attention.  it then wants you to log into our Dell account (I assume to start the support process since we are still under warranty).  What is weird is that under the "Failure Description" to the left of the message it has "Hard Drive - Not Installed".  Of course there is no hard drive, it is the SATA and there is no external drive attached.
Any thoughts, suggestions?

As the title states, my Dell Inspiron 546 Vista Home Premium is not wanting to install some drivers. One of the driver says "Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the MODEM device for this driver." That was for R189670. And then the other R233205 says, " The NVIDIA setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit." Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I bouoght a dual quad Xeon workstation on eBay that I want to use for 3d graphics rendering. Price was right but if came with no OS. It has a Vista key label but I want to install Windows 7 Pro 64 on this machine.

I found a number of forums where people talk about successfully using W7 and on the Dell site it says the machine is compatible with basic W7 functions so it should work. Most of what they say involves issues with RAID drivers. I really have no need for RAID and have just one drive in the box. (It is currently running Linux just fine)

Problem is cannot get it to install because it can not find "suitable drivers". I have all the drivers available from Dell for Vista. There are no Win7 drivers for this machine so have to use Vista 64 drivers.

How can I get past that driver barrier and install Windows 7 and install the Vista drivers? Is there a way I can load it using another machine as a source? I have the same OS on a couple other machines although the other is an i7 quad. The video cards are the exact same model.

What if I got a Vista install disk and use the key on the box then upgrade to 7?

Shame to have a really fast linux door stop! :scratch:

I have the model laptop above which when I have installed win 8.1 and try to install Intel and AMD display drivers, will fail to display after a restart or wake from standby. I can tell that the laptop is on and the mouse icon will show but it will fail to display. I can use it as is without the display drivers but as i need to connect my second screen via VGA or HDMI it will not be possible as it needs the enhanced drivers.
Please help.

I met with the same problem too. I got into system from safe mode, and remove these new drives I installed, and then my laptop got to normal display. If you can?t remove the new installed drives, try to restore your laptop to the previous point before these drives are installed.

I have experienced a lot of problems when I first attempted to install XP on on my laptop which came with windows vista preloaded. I somehow managed to setup dual boot.

The problem then was to find the right drives for me dell XPS m1330 laptop. Dell would not support for XP.
