I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

i installed an update while ago and now i get:

Hi, I have and old Acer Aspire 6920 that runs windows vista home premium 64bit, bought brand new in 2006 I believe. My wife and I used it for a few years, then it acted like it had a bad virus, internet expolrer wouldn't open,we quit using it for awhile, till recently I have started using it again. Going through the laptop, trying to get everything updated, I noticed that service pack 2 wasn't installed. I have tried several times to get it to install, and it won't,and after the last time I attempted it, now windows won't boot up unless I hit F8, and disable driver signature. I have tried changing product key, and I have even called Acer's third party support, and they told me that I don't have to register windows, well if that is the case, then why would Microsoft say you have to? I can't get command prompt to work properly, it opens, but when I type in any command it seems, like slmgr -rearm, or -ipk, or any of the slmgr commands, I get access denied, and tried to get around it, nothing works. If anyone can help me out here and get this laptop working properly again, I would appreciate it. As far as I know, it does not have a bootlegged copy of vista, it is the original copy.  Thank you  GKuipers74

Hi,
I bought a used computer from swap shop so my son or I can use it at home. It's a used Dell computer, bought it for $100 without even knowing that it works. Guy gave his word that it works. So put it up last night, by the way, we only want to use it for browsing the internet for facebook, youtube or reading e-mails. My son is young and I don't need to use any other uses of a computer such as outlook e-mail, documents, playing music...
Anyways, After I put it together last night, it asks me to activate it's Vista windows software. States please activate Vista Business within 30 days. It has blank areas I guess that's where you need to put numbers to activate. I do not have these activation numbers nor computer has it on itself. Computer did not come with any disc or booklets or a box.
I'm planning on going back to swap shop to see if the guy is there but it's one of those flea markets you may not see the same sellers again.
What would happen after 30 days? Will I be still able to browse internet? Or it won't work anymore?
I know it's only $100 I paid, not much, but still it's $100.
Our other computer was really old, so slow, not working.
Thank you for your help.

A:Vista needs to be activated on a used computer. Help

Welcome
There are ways to extend the period to 120 days, but after that period if you do not activate you will slowly begin to lose Windows Features, until you will not have anything, interent, documents or anything else.
I think what happened is that he reinstalled, so you would not have access to any of his private information.
There is a number on the computer, it is 25 digits, every 5 digits separated by a dash. If he just restored the computer to factory specs, that is the key number and should work.
This may give you time to get the correct key number, if the one on the computer does not work

Have you installed/upgraded or uninstalled any hardware device when that happened?
Also is everything the same hard-disk-wise? (if you reformatted, and somehow successfully re-copied all the files by hand - an unusual, but plausible recovery method - sometimes the volume serial number of the partition won't match, de-activating Windows). There are many times when people will swap hard drives into a computer with the exact same specifications (all the hardware the same) in the hope Windows will start, but that too will deactivate Windows (usually the MAC address is the main culprit, but it could be other things like hard drive (physical) serial number, CD-ROM initialization strings, ROM serial number in some OEM machines, possibly hardware or firmware serial numbers on some hardware devices like motherboards). Microsoft worked very hard to make sure any copy of Windows works on only one computer.

Hi everyone. I have a rather unusual problem. Any advice would be most welcome.

I have an Acer Aspire 9300 running Windows Vista with service pack 1. Vista came pre-installed so I don't have the Vista DVD to perform a recovery or re-installation. The computer does have a recovery partition but that will delete everything on my computer and install Vista to the same configuration as when it was purchased. That means the partitions will be removed, data will be lost and applications will be gone. Sadly, I may have little choice. Fortunately, I am able to use a portable drive through USB to backup the data. That will take time and, of course, I will never be sure that I have backed up all of my data. That is mostly because Microsoft stores data in several different places.

I have several viruses on my laptop. The viruses have de-activated my windows Vista installation. As such, I am unable to boot into normal mode. Each time I attempt to boot into normal mode, I am presented with a Windows activation window. I get three options: Activate by telephone, continue with reduced functionality or install a new key. I have tried to enter my original activation key but I get the error message: "Error: The maximum number of secrets allowed on a single machine has been exceeded". I contacted Microsoft and they gave me a new key but the same error message results.

While getting assistance from Microsoft, I would continue with reduced functionality in order to allow them to ... Read more

I have had transparency working twice with an aero msstyle file and/or a theme file but each time I needed to install WindowBlinds for it to work. After which I uninstalled WB and enjoyed the aero experience. So WindowBlinds automatically turns it on somehow. Due to their trial limitations I can't keep installing every time to kick start aero and it's a bit extravagant to pay for especially when my computer is capable without it. I need to know how to turn it on manually.

I've patched the system 32 files. Set the windows color scheme to Windows Vista Standard. I've enabled desktop composition via setting for best appearance. In the regedit DMV key I've set composition to 1, compostion policy to 2 and colorizationopaqueblend to 0, 1 and 2 (opinions on which # works differs so I tried all three) and it's still not worky. Does anyone know anything else that controls transparency? Of course Microsoft has generously disabled the transparency control in "Window Color and Appearance" on Vista Home Basic so that is not an option.

I would just use VistaGlazz but have never been able to run it on this computer. It crashes every time I open it.

Ok so mid day sunday my computer rebooted for windows updates and all was fine. About 3 hours later I started having issues with my computer. My wifi wouldn't work properly, it wasn't retrieving a IP address from my router and when I would hit the button on my laptop to toggle it on and off it wouldn't come back on at all even after several reboots, and it starting popping up asking me to activate windows. When I would click activate under the pc settings after hard wiring my laptop a circle would spin for a second and then nothing.

So earlier today I "refreshed" my laptop and my wifi problems were fixed. But it's still pestering me about activation and I have the watermark on my desktop.

I've tried using slui 3 and slui 4 to no avail. When entering my key under slui 3. I'd get the access denied 0xC0000022 error and with slui 4 I get the same with no activation id.

Just bought a new desktop from Dell that was pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Basic, later wanted to upgrade to Windows Vista Business, so I bought the Windows Vista Business separately from the retail store and try to install it.

But halfway during the upgrade installation, an error message popped up and says that some files are corrupted or something, with error 0X80070017, and the upgrade was cancelled.

I have tried many times which included doing a clean install or installing during boot time, all lead to the same error.

The copy of Windows Vista that I bought was a genuine copy and the hardware should meet all requirements, it's a Pentium D 915, 1 GB RAM with 160GB HDD.

Can anyone please help? I need to get the desktop upgraded to Vista Business by this week.

Sorry to say that the upgrade from a 32bit to 64Bit operating system is not supported.

I would suggest that you either set-up a dual boot between the two systems until you get the 64 bit running satisfactorily. or back up all your data and wipe the disk for the 64 bit install

Delete the config.pol from the server, create a new one if desired, Save the file as Config.pol in the Netlogon folder of either the primary domain controller or the backup domain controller. The Netlogon folder is located in the following folder:

C:\Winnt\System32\Repl\Import\Scripts

Then try to log in again in some workstations and let's see if this will fix it.

I you don't want to delete, then rename it to config.old. login in one workstation and see what happend.

I was told that the only difference between Vista Basic and Vista Premium is the basic version doesn't have the great graphics (don't know what "great graphics" is referring to...);
and the basic version only needs 512MB to run vs premium needs a min 1GB.

1. Which one is better for normal home usage, internet, email, word processing, etc?
2. If I decided to go with the basic version what would be the minimum memory and other specs I would need?

netlogon service on local computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do". And the service stopped.

And after I restarted my laptop, I found the Netlogon service was again switched back to "Manual". And I repeated the previous steps but it kept showing that message. I restarted the computer several times and it's still the same.
I didn't install any softwares last week before the problem occurred, except the Windows update KB4480907 and KB2808679. And the laptop have been running very normally since last December, with no blue screen or forced shut-down.

A thread from last year (5/2001) that the best fix is to reinstall the OS and install SP6. My problem is that SP6 is already installed on the server. I am concerned that the reinstall/fix will delete software (obviously a great concern) and it is specialized surveillance software that I am unfamiliar with. The server doesn't act as a file server but rather as the security utility operator.

Please help.

Thank you.

A:Netlogon Service NOT running BUT has SP6

Reinstalling the Service Pack will not damage any files, just replace any damaged ones that the service pack has.

Reinstalling the OS will kill all your settings and reset the registry, so you would have to reinstall all the programs again.
Can you start it manually?

Is there an event in the event viewer that might give you a little more to go on?

Every time I start up my Windows XP computer, an error message appears in the event viewer

This computer is configured as a member of a workgroup, not as a member of a domain. The Netlogon service does not need to run in this configuration.

but the problem is, this computer is not a member of a domain or a workgroup. it is just a computer hooked up to my high-speed internet. Google only showed results for people trying to set up a domain and one result from someone with a workgroup, and that guy had no replies, but there was nothing regarding the error message for computers with neither of those, nothing for home computers hooked up to the internet.

I was wondering if you can help me find the cause and help me fix it

I have an NT 4.0 server that will not allow ANYONE to log in. All get a message saying the netlogon service is not running so the system cannot log them in. This is a somewhat critical machine and I would like to know if there is a way to either log in and start the service again or start it some other way. Thanks for any help...

A:Netlogon service not running

I had exactly the same problem with a Windows NT 4.0 workstation. The solution that Microsoft gives is to install Service Pack 6 but you can't do that if you can't log in, can you?
What I had to resort to doing is reinstalling Windows NT 4.0 Workstation, leaving the data intact but that can cause more problems then it is worth as programs lose registry keys and may stop working.
If you have a backup of your data on the Server, the best is to reinstall Windows NT Server and wipe all data while reinstalling.
The Netlogon service will work once reinstalled.
Unfortunately, I found no way to bypass the logon.
If you find out another solution, I would love to know.

Hello to all of you.

I wish to know the importance of the following windows system files.

1. secli.dll
2. netlogn.dll
3. eventlog.dll

I have seen many a times while the forum guys are helping people in removing the virus/malware etc they are interested in the location of above files. Are they very crucial to the system?

For providing the above information, I am thankful to all of you.

With kind regards.
Manoj

A:secli.dll netlogon.dll eventlog.dll

Presumably you meant: SCECLI.dll, not secli.dll.

Googling all three files, seems to indicate that they are all legitimate Windows files.

Check the properties of each file in Windows\System32 for confirmation.

I don't generally delete files which have presumably been installed by the OS.

This is what appears in my Windows\System32:

All 3 files dated 14.4.2008

(modified the 29.8.2002 files, on installation of SP3)

1. scecli.dll

Windows Security Configuration Editor Client Engine

5.1.2600.5512
(xpsp.080413-2113)

2. netlogn.dll

Net Logon Services DLL

5.1.2600.5512
(xpsp.080413-2113)

3. eventlog.dll

Event logging service

(xpsp.080413-2111)

I recently encountered a problem on the networking of Win 7 professional. My laptop is installed with Windows 7, 64bit, with Service Pack 1.

I have shared some local folders via my home WLAN so I can access the files while using my other devices in living room, bedroom, and etc. It's been going quite well, until one night last week. I couldn't access my local files thru WLAN. It kept saying that

I am running a Windows XP machine in a Windows 2000 network. Everytime the Windows XP machine reboots it gets these errors:

Netlogon 5719 & w32time 14

I have been researching these errors for a while and I am lost. The computer has full functionality, except when logged onto the database on a remote computer for long periods of time, and does not give errors when logging on.

However if you go into the event viewer after booting up there is 1 Netlogon event and 3 w32time events.

I have tried updating the NIC driver, replacing the NIC, switching ports on the switch, extending the netlogon timeout time, and disabling the spanning tree algorithm on the port.

I need to fix this issue before we have a bigger issue. If anyone has any suggestions please tell me.

Thank you.

A:Netlogon & W32time errors

is there a description that goes with each error?

It may be that there is no domain controller for the domain...

Hi there,

Heres my problem:

I have an Microsoft NT Back Office 4.5 that belongs to a client of mine. I got a phone call that that users are unable to connect to the server.

I arrive at the scene, and try log into the server localy with the Administrator username and password. It tries to authenticate, but then I get the error message that NETLOGON services are not running on this machine. So therefore there is no way for me to logon to the machine.

I bounce (reboot) the machine, still no joy.

What do I do now? I cant logon to the machine to do anything... so I really dont know what to do. There seems to be no other way into the machine. Could I possibly take the hard drive out the box, slave it in another machine and try edit the registory that way? Is that possible? If so, where/how would I do this?

Any other ideas?

Your help on this would be greatly appretiated.

Pathios

I am trying to fix a Vista basic machine, with 2 users.
Suddenly the customer can not log on to either user. Password incorrect.. passwords have not been changed (and yes I have checked cap locks!!!)

Tried a couple password reset programmes.. they didn't work. One couldn't detect any users on the machine!!
If I go onto safe mode. There is no administrator listed and the accounts are still password protected.

I tried to do a factory reinstall (on a separate partition OEM) but to access that it wants the user name and password... and guess what.. it won't accept the password.

I do not have a vista basic disk. I do have a Vista Ultimate disk. Can I use that disk to get system recovery working on a vista basic machine?

Or alternatively can anyone help me figure out how the hell to get in!!!

Please help
thanks

Calx

there are two separate paths. If there isn't any data on the computer you can boot from dvd and format and re-install.

If there is data needed can you safe boot with command promt. at the prompt you can activate the built in admin by typing net user administrator /active

that account shouldn't have a password attached. if it does you probably should start thinking about a virus.

Hello Jairo,

Was anything added to the system before the problem started?

Do you have Windows Vista DVD?

If so you can try running the repair option.
