When I restart, it still goes to the black screen with the dash for like 3 full minutes

Q: When I restart, it still goes to the black screen with the dash for like 3 full minutes

I just recently rid my laptop of viruses with the help of boopme. However, I'm having some issues when starting it up. 3 things will either happen:
1)Stay stuck at the "Compaq" screen
2)Go passed the "Compaq" screen but then to a black screen with a blinking dash at the top left corner (If I wait long enough, like 3 long minutes, Windows 7 will eventually start up.)
3)Or go passed the "Compaq" screen, to the black screen with dash, but eventually instead of starting up, it will say something like "Operating system not found"

Preferred Solution: When I restart, it still goes to the black screen with the dash for like 3 full minutes

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

hello, Hoping you can help

I have a Asus running Windows 7.. recently its been lagging quite a lot..
a week ago I started having issues even just getting to websites like Youtube, and it would freeze up..
I ran a disk cleaner, defragment (which said only 3 % fragmented). I also ran 2 virus scans. both Microsoft Essentials, as well as Malwarebyes cleaner..

last night again I was lagging horribly.. when I checked My Computer. it showed my C Drive was in the Red, and veryyyy near full. Yet my Partitioned D drive showed near empty..

This morning I rebooted the laptop.. as soon as it powered up to show *Asus*. from that screen it goes to a black screen, with a dash. that's all I get..

Ive tried to remove the battery and unplug.. nothing seems to help.. im at a loss. Im hoping to get into the lappy to I can transfer and delete filoes from C drive..

Any help would be greatly appreciated..

?? Is My laptop dead in the water?? or can I fix this..

Tx for your help in advance

Hi! Sorry for opening a new thread but this is just so serious and I am so stressed out about it that I didn't have the patience to search if the thread is already open.
I have a black screen and white blinking dash problem. The thing is, I can't even type f2 or f4, or anything whatsoever. It is not reacting at all to the keyboard. It's the second time this is happening in 2 days, every time I turn it off (properly) and try to turn it on, it does that. After a lot of hopeless trying to turn it on or make f2 or f4 work, it just starts working again normally... And now I finally turned it on after I spent the whole morning trying and I'm working on saving all my files, but now I'm scared to turn it off. What do I do?? What is wrong with my computer?

I have a windows & start up disc

3. Ran Startup Repair: Says couldn't detect a problem if recently attached device then remove it. ( Nothings Connected)
4. System restore ( was successfull but still no go)
5. Ran chkdsk & chkdsk/r from command prompt option

I also contacted Sony Support and with the 15 minutes alotted

6. Reseated memory

I just want to be able to get into the computer one more time so I can transfer my music and some other important files to my External Hard Drive. Please HELP!!! Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

My computer, which was running windows 10 without much issue, is now completely unusable for reasons beyond my comprehension. After bios messages I now only have a blinking white dash on a black screen.

I have tried various repairs, with the windows recovery usb. All automatic repairs fail due to the disk "being locked", so i have tried a few guides which involved bcdboot commands which have failed to fix anything. One command was bcdboot g: which gave an error like failed copying boot files (i forget the exact wording) .

Could some kind soul point me towards a fix, im tearing my hair out! Many thanks!

Hello, I am trying to install Windows XP (because Windows 7 is damn slow) Corporate Edition 64-bit but after the Copying Windows Files setup portion, the setup wants to restart my computer, but after the motherboard logo, I just get the blacnk screen with white dash - if CD is inserted I get "Press any key to boot from CD....." and a white dash at the end with nothing happening. I've searched for a solution everywhere, but I didn't find my case. I have installed XP atleas 20 times on this computer, and I've never had such problem before. I thought it could be because of the 64-bit version, but after trying to install the 32-bit version I have got the same issue, which has never happened before. Windows 7 installs perfectly. I have: removed the CD from the drive; Updated the BIOS to the last version; Tried running in safe mode and nothing helped. My computer specs are: Processor: Intel Pentium DualCore @ 2.80 GHz, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, 650GB HDD SATA2, ATI HD 4770 512MB DDR5 Graphics Card, American Megatrends Inc. 0502 BIOS. I hope there's somebody out there to help me because I really want XP.

A:Black screen with white dash after first portion of Windows Setup?

Seems that Windows XP installation is not detecting or having problems with your SATA2 drive.

Try going to BIOS and Switching the SATA2 drive out of RAID mode if possible see if that helps.

Windows Xp has issues with SATA2 Drives.

Or you may need to slipstream your copy of Xp with sp2 or 3 if your cd is only SP1 for it to recognize and work with SATA drives. Also with SATA drives I believe Windows XP only recognizes 128GB 137GB SATA drives.

However, when I restarted it again,
I got stuck at black screen with stupid blinkking white dash.
So I use the Recovery Disc thingy
And i clicked that first option.
Then it says, something like
unable to fix it.
Then it says that the stupid missing boot thingy is missing.
Googled for solution.
Tried those command prompt like
Fixmbr or scanos
(it says theres an installation
I typed Y for yes and still,
That boot missing chkdsk thingy still pops up)
Remove hardwares (wait whats a hardware is it those usb thingy?)
Checked the BIOS which I googled again for its meaning.(and yes, it is in order)
But never worked.
So any suggestions or explain with more detail?
Because I have no idea about these computer stuffs.

Hello. Every ten to fifteen minutes, whether I be watching a full-screen video from YouTube or playing a video game, my window gets minimized back to the desktop. I've been experiencing this problem for a few months now. I've tried searching to see if anyone else has had similar problems, but none of the solutions I've found (uninstalling AVG, no screen saver) have done anything for me. I took a screenshot of the processes running in my task manager, and I was hoping if someone would indicate to me if any of them could be interfering. If there's a solution to this, process-related or otherwise, I'd appreciate the help.

A:Full-screen programs minimize every 10-15 minutes

Check your screensaver settings. Disable it when watching a video or playing a game.

If using Windows Media Player, click Tools > Options... > uncheck Allow screen saver during playback.

I seem to have a problem with windows media player where on selecting full screen the display reverts back to the small display after a few minutes.
It is more irritating than a major problem but I would like to resolve it ,

I am running 32 bit Vista Home premium on an Acer 5920.
I have downloaded all the system updates and checked that they are upto date for media player. I am running my laptop on mains power so I do not think it is power issue - Any help or suggestions most appreciated.

A:Full screen reverts back to small after 5 minutes

This problem can occur if a browser window is open and the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) changes, or if the screen saver is activated during a playback session while Windows Media Player is in Full Screen mode.

Also, any programs or events that require user action or notification can cause Windows Media Player to exit from Full Screen mode. Also, try to check the video driver for your laptop and try to install the latest driver.

Hi All

I have a HP Envy M6 running Windows 8.1 and until this week have had no issues.
A few days ago while watching a movie in full screen it started exiting full screen to standard screen and I had to click the full screen button to get it back. This continues to happen every 3 minutes still while watching streaming content. All other functions of the PC and applications I use are fine and I have not downloaded any new software.

Here's what I've done so far to try and resolve:

I verified that the problem occurs on IE, Chrome & FirefoxI ran the HP update utility to see if all drivers etc were current and they were.I checked Windows updates to ensure all software was updated to the latest version and it was.I verified that Adobe Flash Player was up to dateI uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Flash playerI disabled Active x and subsequently reactivated.I've completed a system restore and re-updated all applications and firmware.

The problem still exists.

Has anyone else had this problem and do you have any further suggestions I might try?

Thanks in advance

HI I have a Dell Dimension 4700, Pentium 4 running Windows XP and when I reboot within 1 to 5 minutes the screen will just go black. The computer stays on but the display never comes back until I shut it off and reboot. I have tried to do a system restore a number of times but if it will even stay on long enough to complete I get a message telling me it cannot be restored to that date,, no matter what date I try. I have slowely managed to get what I need backed up and I am willing to reinstall Windows but I know it will never be able to complete before it goes black again. I finally opened up the case and found that the fan on my video card isn't working. So I tried to install two alternate video cards and neither one will even allow me to get past the log in so I put the old graphics card back in for now. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to either fix the problem or reinstall windows? Please let me know. Thank you.

A:Screen goes black within 5 minutes of booting

If you GPU fan isn't working then it is probably shutting down due to overheating and may well be damaged now, if it isn't you are very likely to damage the GPU by continuing to run it without a fan.

When you say you have tried other GPUs but they won't allow you to get past the log in, what exactly do you mean? What does it do, or not do, at the login point (lock up, crash, reboot)?

I have this black screen after 5 minutes after my computer fully boots up.
Everything is fine, once all booted up, nothing's wrong, everything seems to be going fine until i get this black screen all of a sudden in the middle of doing nothing but waiting.

A:Black Screen After 5 minutes of booting

First, try booting into safe mode. If everything seems to run fine in safe mode, that would lead me to believe that the issue is caused by software. Being it is a black screen, I would think possibly your video card driver. I'd recommend uninstalling and reinstalling your video card driver in this case.

If your system does the same thing in safe mode, then the issue is probably hardware related. If your system uses a dedicated graphics card (not integrated) make sure that the fans on it are spinning.

Hi, I'm new here (nice to meet you all). I am a basic computer user that knows how to download, install, and fix basic problems. However, this is seemingly too advanced for me, unfortunately.

I have a Gateway LX6810, preconfigured from Best Buy with Vista Home Premium x64, 8 gb of DDR2 Ram, an Intel Core 2 Quad processor (at 2.33 ghz), and a Nvidia GeForce 120 video card.

My exact problem is as follows: My computer has been running fine since I got it about 2 weeks ago. It loaded fast, opened programs quickly, and was able to play Fallout 3 on max specs (other than resolution, as I have that set to my tv's 1280x720 ratio) with no stutter.

Now, as of three hours ago, I get the black screen everytime I start, right after the green Microsoft load bar. It lasts about ten minutes, then when the "Welcome" screen with the circular cursor comes up, that lasts another minute. I haven't really downloaded anything in the past few day, other than a small video file (which I watched and had no troubles with), so I don't think its that. Also now it takes Firefox about 30-40 seconds to load up instead of two or three. Normal folders still open very quickly. I'm half afraid to try a game right now.

I had noticed something funky when, about 5 hours ago, I went to open a rar file and it took about 2 mins to open. Keep in mind that I had opened that rar file a day or two ago without a hitch. About half an hour later, I shut off my PC. Realizing I wanted to look something else up o... Read more

I noticed that my downloads speeds were abysmal and that the problem was that my hard drive was running at 1% to 2% while in a download. This meant that I was getting 1.1 mg/s download speed. So I changed the sata cable connected to the hard drive and change it to the first port in the motherboard. this fixed the problem. I was getting 5 to 6 mg/s download speeds but when I started playing any game my monitor went black and on the screen would say "no signal". I changed the sata cable back where it was originally plugged and the problem at first seemed fixed but I still have the 1.1 mg/s download speed. Then the problem with my monitor returned. Also I noticed that every time I booted my pc my internet connection started connecting and disconnected fore a few minutes and then connected. I tried every sata port on the motherboard and the problem persisted. I tried reinstalling windows 10 and nothing. I changed the sata cable and nothing. In another forum somebody said that it could be a problem with my motherboard. I would like to know for surten before I change it.

Probably hardware. Clean out dust in the system, if you have overclocked stop and revert to original settings. The link contains the most probable solution to your problem. IF the problem cannot be fixed i suggest lowering the vcore a tad tad bit.
Here are stresstests to possibly help rule a few things out. : Stresstests:
Ram : RAM - Test with Memtest86+
General hardware: Hardware - Stress Test With Prime95 ( (Three pre-set configurations are available: Small FFTs and In-place FFTs, and Blend. Small and In-place modes primarily test the FPU and the caches of the CPU, whereas the Blend mode tests everything, including the memory.)
Graphics: Video Card - Stress Test with Furmark (Do the above Graphics test only with the latest drivers, and then Run it until the temperatures stop increasing; should be less then 10 minutes. If you don't see any crazy glitches or distortion on the screen, The test most likely passed. Take note if the Temperature gets too high, or you see Visual artifact - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia to stop the test.)
Good luck.

I have a Toshiba Satellite and I'm running Vista.
Basically my computer will start up and do everything fine and then it just goes black for about 20 minutes before the cursor shows for a few mins before very slowly loading the login page and then slowly loads the desktop.
I can't get a virus scanner to run for more than a half hour or so before the computer just turns off.
Also - I haven't given it the time to see if it comes out of it like normal start up, but it appears to fail to boot in safe mode.
What can I do? I know I haven't given any info as to what I've tried, but I'm really lost.
Thank you

Haven't updated the laptop since last December, so I decided to go ahead and look at the updates available. They were mostly security updates and just normal x64 Windows 8.1 updates, but I noticed that 2 of them were graphics drivers (for both the different graphics cards.) I started downloading the updates with the laptop plugged into the television so I could watch something whilst it was updating. 20 minutes or so through the programme I was watching (from the laptop), the video stopped and the video on the television was lost (it was through HDMI if that helps). I looked at the laptop, and it was a bit strange. The video was in full screen mode but the task bar had suddenly appeared and then the screen went black. I figured it had probably started installing the graphics updates, but it has been black for 35 minutes now and I am too afraid to turn it off. I have tried unplugging the HDMI from the laptop, and pressing f4 many times. I do not think it has overheated as I have a cooler it is sitting on that is turned on. The laptop sounds and looks like it is functioning, but the screen is not showing anything. Thanks for any helpSpoiler (Highlight to read)

A:HP Envy m6 black screen for 30 minutes after updating

I do hope you created a usb recovery flashdrive with the HP recovery media creator. You need to locate your usb recovery flashdrive, plug it into a usb port and boot to it.   You need to use Windows system restore to rollback your Windows operating system to a restore point dated before you started the updates. That should resolve your issue. If you did not create a  usb recovery media, there are ways around it, but they are more involved.

A few days ago all of a sudden the screen started to go black every few minutes (1-15), sometimes right in the middle of me typing something. BIOS/all drivers/Windows 10 are updated, rolled Windows back to when there were no issues, set power options to never turn off anything. No new events in event viewer. In order to bring screen back I need to press power button to sleep and then again to wake up. When it happens in Windows the screen remains backlit and I think everything else continues to work. It doesnt seem to be related to OS because it happens in BIOS screen as well, in this case screen goes pitch black, not backlit and I have to reboot. Fiddling with BIOS does nothing - switched off Touch Screen, S3, C states, etc, nothing works.

About six months ago, my machine started giving me a black screen during the boot up process. As soon as I turn it on, I see the manufacturers logo (dell) for about 1 second, then it gives me a black screen with a flashing white cursor in the upper left hand corner. This screen last about 3-4 minutes, then it boots windows XP normally.

Last week I was in the room while it was booting, and I noticed that it was accessing the network during the black screen portion of boot up (activity light on cable modem was flashing, alot), which got me motivated to fix it. (not sure what that means). I ran virus scanners (McAfee) which found nothing, but I did check the log file in my scanner which shows that my auto virus screening is diabled everytime I boot the machine????

Checked partitions on the hard drive, found 2- my c:, and an unnamed partition of about 30 megs. (I dont remember putting a second partitions on there - would the manufacturer put that there to use as a virtual memory??)

Deleted all partitions and reformated the hard drive yesterday, and reloaded XP, but that still didn't solve it.

Loaded and booted the Windows Recovery Console, and ran the FIXMBR command twice, both times I get the message that "It appears your MBR is corrupted" or something like that but it doesn't fix it.

Do I have some sort of virus in the MBR that my virus software (McAffee, was up to date before my reformating) never caught or is this a hardware is... Read more

A:Black Screen on Boot up for ~3 minutes, then runs ok

Boot Error

You say it is accessing the network during boot this might be due to you're boot priority in the BIOS.
Go into you're BIOS and set you're boot priority to:
First: Floppy
Second: CD/DVD
Third: HDD or HDD0

Hopefully this should resolve you're slow boot up.

Also you can not create 1 partition with you're hard drive the computer does not use 100% HDD when formatting as for it takes probably around 30MB for it self to do what it has to do so that is not a virus.
Hope this helps you.

Tachyon-PC is being slow to boot its OS. Ironic, right?

Lately my laptop has been experiencing a problem when I boot it up. After the "Toshiba: Leading Innovation" POST screen, a black screen pops up that lasts for 4 minutes, 20 seconds on average. This black screen has a grey underscore (_) in the top-left corner, like a terminal. Afterwards, the Windows 7 splash and then login screen will appear as normal.

-I went into BIOS and set my boot to Fast Mode; that didn't help
-I was told to see if the on-die or onboard cache has been disabled; however, on my Satellite L875's BIOS, I can't seem to find an option for it.

Any help would be highly appreciated.
Thank you.

A:Black screen after POST; persists for over 4 minutes

Have you tried resetting your bios to default settings?

Have you made sure the hard disk is the 1st boot priority?

You did not specify what toshiba model you have. I suggest looking for bios updates as well.

Today my Sony Vaio VPCEB2C5E laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium started showing a black screen for up to 10-15 minutes every time I log in. This happens in safe mode too. The boot up until the login screen is fine - takes about 15 seconds as I'm using a new SSD. I find that I can open the task manager. Sometimes explorer won't close in the Task Manager, no matter what I do, but after 10 minutes everything works fine. Other times I can kill the explorer process and re-open it with run and then things are back to normal. Whatever happens, once my taskbar eventually loads, everything else seems to be running fine.
When I last rebooted my laptop a few days ago the laptop rebooted fine. The only thing which I recall changing in the last few days is sharing a couple of folders on my home network, and a Razer mouse driver updates.
I've been doing quite a lot of googling around the issue and trying out various solutions.
Things I've tried so far:
Malwarebytes scan, Panda and avast antivirus scans
Performing a "clean boot" (disabling everything except microsoft services using msconfig)
sfc /scannow
chkdsk c: /f
chkdsk c: /r
Removing all network drives
I had a look in Event Manager to see if I could see anything obvious, and it said that the Panda Antivirus Protection service was taking a very long time to start, so I uninstalled Panda and replaced it with Avast. This had no effect.
I also just did a system restore to a point s... Read more

Hey everyone.

Have just bought a Satellite Pro 870-17X and for some reason the screen keeps going black. The laptop is actually going into sleep mode or similar.

The obvious thing would be the settings but after adjusting them it still wont last any longer than 2 minutes (timed it to check).

Really confused with this one so any ideas would be hugely appreciated.

Thankyou in advance.. :-)

A:Re: Satellite Pro L870-17X - screen goes black in 2 minutes

I don?t understand what do you mean with ?screen goes black? but try please to change power settings for certain power plan.
There you can find settings about ?dim the display?, ?turn off the display? and ?put computer to sleep?.
Play a bit with all these settings.

Hi, I have been having this problem for a while now. Thank you for helping.

I have:
Corsair 512 ram 3200
Ti-4400 or PNY 6600

My comupter would crash or turn black screen within 10 minutes after start up. It will either give me a blue screen saying there is a hardware failure or just simply turn black. First, I thought it is an video card issue, so i went to buy a new card, the PNY6600. The problem seems to disappear for a week, then it came back. I cleaned everything and it is still the same. So I thought it might be a software/driver issue. I format my HD and reinstall windows. During the installing process, the computer freezes/black screen again ( i tried several time, same thing happen everything). Now, I ran out of idea and have no clue which piece of hardware should i replace.

I am thinking it shouldn't be the video card, since it is new. Have any one of you have this kind of problem before? If you need any extra information, please ask me. I will try my best to answer.

Thank you very much

A:Computer crash/black screen within 10 minutes

Hello! Welcome to TechSpot!

Sounds like a temp problem.
I'd look to the cpu/heatsink fan.
Make sure heatsink is clear of dredded dust bunnies, fresh thermal paste (AS3 or 5).
Possibly the PSU..
Try running pc wizard or everest to watch temps.
In the bios you should have "harware monitoring" for temps.
Just go into bios and watch the temps there for 10 to 15 mins.

When I turn on my laptop, for the first few minutes of it going, the screen is black, I can go into the security settings and turn on task manager, this is a new laptop, just over a month old, with the only things downloaded are a few mp4 files and some IDE's

A:New laptop, screen black for few minutes on startup

It would help tremendously if you could tell us some vital details
start with the make and full model of the laptop
What OS
In a month old laptop an other important detail is how long as this problem existed
I know what mp4 is but what please are IDE`s
If the screen is black - how are you entering settings and security
What have you tried that saves both of us wasting time
