T440s left TrackPoint button seems to not be working?

Q: T440s left TrackPoint button seems to not be working?

Got a T440s Touch. Trackpad looks fine but the left side is slightly tilted compared to the right. Clicking the buttons at the bottom work and the right TrackPoint button at the top of the tochpad works, as does the centre scroll button, but the left one doesn't. The left button doesn't seem to click - can this be fixed easily? Have tried playing around with drivers, blowing compressed air into the trackpad, updating BIOS, enabling/disabling TrackPoint in the BIOS but all to no avail. Any ideas? If the worst comes to the worst I have an L540 - can I swap the trackpads over?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

The left click above the track pad doesn't seem to properly register my click unless I press hard or at a certain spot or angle.  Is this something that can be fixed without an RMA? Where is the closest repair centre in Toronto?

I have upgraded my old T410i with some extra RAM and an SSD. The system works great and fast. There is one problem. I have noticed that although my trackpoint and right and middle button (above trackpad) work like the should the left button (above trackpad) doesn't. I thought this has to work like the left mouse button or the left button under the trackpad but it doesn't. I have the latest bios version 1.45 installed and the latest drivers. I have also tried to detach the keyboard and attached it again. After that I tried to disable the trackpoint in the bios and enable it again. This doesn't help either. Maybe it is a defective key because all the other functions and keys do work. Is there something overlook?

I've had this problem before and had a replacement, but in the replaced machine the problem came back. Especially when pressing the button all the way on the left side it is sometimes unresponsive even though it makes a clicking noise. But sometimes it works, so maybe it is caused by dust? Is anyone else having this problem?

Even while typing the subject line of this thread, I had to retype it a couple of times as the left button triggered unknown clicks on the web page loading another while my left thumb unintentionally and inevitably rested on it. Happening quite frequently with random cliks being registered. Adjusting sensitivity of the trackpoint or touchpad does not have any effect. I don't see any other settings. Did anyone ever face this? Is there perhaps a firmware/software approach to fix such things? I jut bought this Yoga in November, did not start to really use it since a few days ago and is why I just noticed this way after the return period, and I don't want to go to the hassle of warranty claim if there's a software workaround.

Hey folks, The middle button for trackpoint doesn't work. All drivers are up to date. Middle button is enabled for scrolling, not clicking. Middle button works when switched over for clicking. It just randomly stopped working last week, but it works when I switch it over to clicking in the settings tool. Any ideas? Thanks

Hi, I'm setting up my new thinkpad t440s and I cannot get my trackpoint to work.  It does not respond and in my mouse properties/thinkpad section, the Touchpad is clearly enabled, but the Trackpoint options are all greyed out.  In the pointing options dropdown, I can only see the option to 'Use TouchPad only.'  I strongly prefer the Trackpoint to the Touchpad and would prefer it if possible. I currently have Synaptics pointing device driver version 18.0.7.109, the most recent version.  I've tried rolling back to previous versions and this issue still persists.  I also have gone into BIOS and disabled and re-enabled the Trackpoint in boot settings. Unfortunately, since this is a work machine, I do NOT have the capability to remove the keyboard or replace parts.  Any ideas at all would be greatly appreciated.

My little brother was using the computer last night and said that everything froze up for a bit and he could not click on anything. When I rebooted, it said "Active Desktop Recovery" on the screen as part of the wall paper saying it was disabled. It had instructions to turn it back on and there was a button to click for me to restore it. But, I could not click on it. The right-click works just fine. I figured out how to switch primary control to the right button on the mouse, so I could get around while fixing it. Unfortunately, now that I can use right click, the restore active desktop button is gone. It disappeared after a reboot. I have run McAfee, Panda Active Scan, Spybot, Ad-Aware and Registry Mechanic. There were a few infected files and spyware and I removed them. The problem still exists. I have uninstalled the mouse driver and let the computer auto-install the driver on reboot. If anyone has any idea how to fix this, then please help me.

Hello,

I have a HP Pavillion 9000 series with Vista 32. This afternoon the left button on the touch pad stopped working. I have reinstalled the software/drivers and it did not correct the problem. After an excruciatingly slow chat session with HP, they only recommended what I already tried.

Any suggestions? The touch pad is Symnaptics TouchPad v.6.2

Hi there,

I just got a new gaming mouse, an Anker 4000 DPI one from Amazon and i've been having this problem for the week i've had this and it's that the left mouse button doesn't like to work. I've tried the mouse on my dads laptop and no problems at all.

Any idea?

After installing the latest Win10 and Lenovo updates (about 2 weeks ago) on my T440s the trackpoint buttons no longer work. They worked prior to the updates. I have made sure that trackpoint is enabled in BIOS, I have installed and reinstalled the lastest driver and Ultranav software. But nothing seems to fix the problem.  I tried to go back to prev driver, but unforunately when I reinstalled the driver it over wrote the previous driver that did work.  Interestingly the screen on the new UltraNav app does not reflect the proper button placement for my T440s. I have looked on the internet for about a week for solutions, and I've tried everything that seemed logical... nothing has solved the problem. Thanks for any help...

I have gone into the control panel and changed the settings so that the right button acts like the left, but this still isn't good because now I don't have a right button feature anymore. Hey guys - this is a weird one. Left click the mouse to open something and nothing happens. Well, nothing happens that's supposed to, is safe to say!For example - in OUTLOOK - you move the mouse onto "addresses," it "lights up," i.e. highlights... then you click the mouse (left), the highlight comes off, un-highlights itself. Another example, in IExplorer -- click on the DOWN arrow in the address line -- this should expose/make visible the most recently visited sites in a drop down box.... but, you click on the arrow - sites appear in the dropped window for LESS THAN A SECOND, then go away!!! Another example, I hit "FILE" then "SAVE AS" to save a document on my desktop, left click the down arrow at the "SAVE IN" area, it QUICKLY opens all of the available areas to save the file in I would normally see, but they disappear as fast as they appear! With IE minimized, left click on it, it doesn't open. Basically... left click of the mouse isn't performing as advertised. Heck --- even to EDIT this post... I had to RIGHT CLICK on the edit button!!!It seems the only way to open something is to RIGHT click, then select OPEN... Ran EWIDO - cleaned/deleted the infected 86 filesRan AVG - ditto what happened on Ewido. 86 infections, cleaned and deleted... Here's the latest HJT log... A:HP Laptop left mouse button not working

I want to say it is a hardware issue but the thing about part of the menus disappearing makes me wonder if it is a virus. I would try a Windows preboot environment CD like Hiren's and see if the mouse works with different software. But that is a longshot and the likely answer is that the mouse circuit board is bad. The only other thing you could try is a factory restore.

Hi everyone, Avid user of the Thinkpad Carbon line here and really hoping this issue can be resolved - I've recently been having trouble using the left mouse click button on the 5th gen x1 carbon. Sometimes when I press to click on it, it doesn't register the click as well as it used to. Even when slighly pushing up against with my index finger, the button begins to make janky noises as if there was something wrong with it. The right mouse click button has had no issue so far which makes sense since I've primarily used the left click button during most of my work sessions. Just trying to understand whether there's a hardware fix for this available using Lenovo or third party services? Would really like to know since I enjoy using this machine for both work and leisure.

I turned on my 6 months old Acer Aspire One as usual and realised that something was wrong with my mouse. The left button simply doesn't work. Neither does tapping the touchpad. Nothing happens no matter how many times I push or tap. I can move the cursor around just fine and the right mousebutton still works. I can also plug in a USB mouse and use that instead.
I have checked the mouse properties. Under the tab "Hardware" the mouse is listed "Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad", and the unit status says it works correctly. I also checked the preferences, and both tapping and buttons are activated and set to normal.
I have tried restarting, removing the battery and Fn-F7 without any luck.
I have also tried switching preferences to left-handed - that gave a funny result: Both the right button and tapping the touchpad functioned like a right-click except now they could also for instance close a window and open the start-menu. The left-button still didn't have any function what so ever.
Hope someone can help me.

I'm having a problem with getting the mouse wheel button to work correctly in 8.1

I've switched to left handed use to alleviate shoulder pain.

Before this I had the mouse and keyboard center installed. I use a cheap USB keyboard and a microsoft USB optical wheel mouse. Configured for the right hand, everything works correctly. The right button is the normal select, the right is context and I configured the wheel button to double click.

When I switch to left hand I lose the wheel button double click. The select / context buttons are properly working, but when I click the wheel it appears to be the same as a context button click. I thought maybe the settings got messed up when I switched the buttons so I tried setting the wheel button to another function (open charms in this case). That works. Switched the wheel button back to double click and it goes back to open context menu.

I uninstalled and re-installed the mouse and keyboard center. That made no difference. Seems like a bug here. Any suggestions? Anyone else run in to this or solve it?

On, this is on a new (mid-april) HP laptop so there is a touchpad that I almost never use because I generally have the mouse, keyboard, and external monitor attached with the lid closed.

I am running Windows 10 (Creators Update) and have been doing so for quite a while on a laptop. Recently, whilst playing a game, I was clicking the touchpads left hand button (mouse1) rapidly until suddenly it stopped working completely.

In addition, tapping to activate mouse 1 is also not working with the touchpad. Right clicking is still working and mouses are also working properly.

When I looked to see what the touchpad was doing (and if any of the buttons were activated) I noticed that it says the left side button is always being clicked and held (even though I'm not pressing nor holding it)?

Is there some way of fixing this or has the hardware completely broke?

The left click button on the touchpad of my Acer Aspire One Netbook recently stopped working properly. It won't let me click ( except sometimes after pressing the button repeatedly), and when it does, it highlights everything on the page and drags the links I try to click. I can't get it out of drag mode, and trying to use the scroll bar is hell because it won't stop scrolling. I think the left click button is stuck.

I've had the computer for three years, and up until a few weeks ago, I'd never had this problem. I don't want to send it back to Acer or buy any new parts. Is there any solution to this problem?

A:Left Click Button Not Working on Acer Aspire One

Boot into Setup (Bios) go to Integrated Peripherals and see if Touch Pad is disabled, if so, using your arrow key Enable it. Save and Exit. (it probably is already enabled)
Go to the Acer Driver page Acer | Download find your model and download the Touch Pad Driver.
Go to the Control Panel/Mouse (or touchpad) and adjust the sensitivity.

The left mouse button has suddenly stopped working on my touchpad. I tried to restart including taking the battery out but this didn't help.

I tried to uninstall the driver (called Synaptics Ps/2 touchpad port on my control panel). It then asked me if I wanted to uninstall the software. I clicked yes.

After this, the driver now changed to being called just PS/2 touchpad port but there is still an option to uninstall available.

I tried to uninstall again but nothing happens. I tired to download new driver software for Toshiba touchpad from the website, but it is failing to download.

I am able to use an external mouse normally but would really like to get my touchpad working normally again.

Can someone please advise on what might be causing this problem and how to fix it?

Thanks.

Its a Logitech wireless optical mouse.

I've pushed the reset button on the bottom, tried restarting my computer and tried using the troubleshooting feature that came with the mouse itself.

Starting today, the left button stopped working. The right button works fine. The batteries are new. The scroll wheel works fine. The pointer works fine.

I tried it again and suddenly it was working....then the next time I went to click on something, it stopped again. I just got it for christmas....what could be wrong? The only thing I can possibly think of is that my 18 month old had it in his hand last week banging on the keyboard with it. Maybe he broke it a little bit and thats why its giving me trouble now?

Unless anyone knows what I can do to try and get it working then I think i'll have to buy a new one.

So help me if you can. If not, no worries...I still have the mouse that came with my computer and I can get along with that until i get a new one.

A:Logitech wireless mouse...left button stops working

I suspect you'll be buying a new one. It's probably the switch in the mouse, I've had those switches go on mice a number of times. Let's see, I've had 4-5 of them go in 50,000 posts, so you were due for a failure with 16,000!

I have a Toshiba Satellite L4550-S5976 running under Windows 7. When I start it up (and if I catch it at the right time), the touchpad buttons work fine for a few minutes. After the machine completely boots, the touchpad button problems start - the left button performs as the right button and the right button does nothing.

On a lark, I plugged in a USB mouse and rebooted. When I do that, the mouse works fine AND the touchpad buttons work properly. Carrying around a mouse isn't always convenient so I'd like to have the machine work as expected.

I tried updating the touchpad drivers - that did not fix the problem. I even reinstalled Windows 7 on the machine - that did not fix the problem either.

Any ideas what I could do next to fix this problem?

Thanks, Brian

I find my mouse click often not registering and I need to click multiple times for the action to execute. This isn't a matter of lag because I tried waiting a while and the action never executes unless if I click it multiple times. This is really frustrating. My old T420s never had this issue.  It might be worth mentioning that I also have a problem with the trackpoint scrolling which if I scroll in the vertical direction, it first registers as a horizontal scroll icon and doesn't change to vertical unless if I press down hard and the page ends up jumping from the pressure. I can't gradually scroll. Several other people mentioned this issue in a separate thread but no fix was ever proposed.  I'm wondering if the two are related in that they could be some I/O communication issue between the trackpoint and some controller.

Man this feels weird. I'm usually the one giving help, not asking for it lol.

Computer:

HP Pavilion dv7
Win7 Professional x64

This problem started after I left my computer on sleep for a couple hours. When I woke it up, the touchpad taps and left mouse button clicks brought up the right-click context menu and nothing on the taskbar responded to the cursor hovering over it. Also for some reason pressing the Windows key on the keyboard wouldn't bring up the Start menu. The only way I've found to correct this is to plug in a USB mouse and press the right MB on it. I also was able to fix it one time by uninstalling the Synaptics drivers and letting Windows restart and find the mouse, but after trying to reinstall the Synaptics drivers then uninstalling them again after the problem reappeared this method no longer works. In either case left click functionality is restored but there is no right click functionality period on the touchpad/buttons. However the USB mouse that I plug in works normally. Also after left click is restored, everything on the taskbar and elsewhere responds as it should with the exception of not being able to right click on anything (which sucks in W7). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Synaptics drivers to see if that would fix it but after reinstalling them and restarting, the problem came back. Another thing I've noticed is that even with the Synaptics drivers installed the vertical scroll area doesn't respond.... Read more

Hey! I'm quite happy with my new P1 2nd Gen, except the pointing devices suck. Lenovo seems to have switched the TrackPoint to ALPS which comes very stiff, choppy and inaccurate. I played around with udev rules and acceleration settings which made it a bit better, but it is still far from the awesome accuracy and smoothness of the W540, my last machine. Same with the three buttons on top of the TrackPad - especially the left one doesn't react reliably when hit on the lower right corner. I have to press a second time every ten clicks or so. This definitely sucks, so my question is: Is anyone aware of other manufacturers/options of especially TrackPoints and TouchPad-buttons for the P1 apart from ALPS? BestMarkus

Hello, I'm having a problem with my Thinkpad L430. The right bottom button on the Touchpad is registering as a left click rather than a right click (which normally brings up the pop-up menu. It is enabled and is set to this in the Elan software. I've also tried changing the command, however it simply doesn't work. When I click the 'mouse button reverse' option in Windows, the left click brings up the pop-up menu, so it probably isn't a software issue but to get a second opinion would be great. I have all of the latest drivers and software updates, and the Elan software is set up to default. I have also completely reinstalled Windows and rolling back to an earlier driver version, but it still isn't working. Any advice on how to make the right button work again would be greatly appreciated! I'm running Windows 7. Thanks.

On my X1Y3 it started about a month ago.  Bascially after anywhere from 5-30 minutes of the computer turning on my trackpoint icon gets stuck with the middle scrolling point icon anytime im in a text field.  It acts like the middle track point buttoin is depressed even when its not.  see below picture circled in yellow.  This is not related to a specific browser.  It happens in Chrome, IE and Edge.  Synaptics driver version 19.3.4.224.  I updated to the current driver about 3 weeks ago when this problem 1st started.  It happened on the prior driver too.

Currently my TrackPoint middle button does scrolling as desired but when I release it, it pops up a right-click menu.  I can't figure out how to turn off the right-click functionality.  Any ideas? I believe I have fully explored the entire Mouse properties dialog from Control Panel, including the advanced one with the special TrackPoint options.  I tried any option that looked even vaguely related, and nothing helped. Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone,

For the second time within the past two weeks I've had quite an annoying problem regarding my left mouse button on my synaptics pointing device, all of a sudden the left mouse button will stop working. The right mouse button and the rest of the touchpad will work apart from being able to click the LMB function. I've had this happen once before quite a few months ago but thought nothing of it at the time. This occurs for around half a minute to sometimes a minute before returning to normal and being able to use the LMB. I am using a Lenovo Z580 if that is any help to anyone.

I have tried searching around the internet for any information regarding this problem but I have not been able to find any solution or information connected to my issue.

Thank you in advance!

Hello LO mate when you click the button do you hear an audible click from inside the mouse it could be something as simple as a stuck micro switch.

Also if it is a wired one check the USB contacts too - in the plug and socket. You can clean them gently with a strip (about 5 mm with the corners rounded off) of old credit card with some lint free cloth around the end of it moistened very lightly with some alcohol

By the way just how old is the mouse?

Hi,

I have a Windows 7 and I use an ALPS touch pad driver and all of a sudden the left button on the touchpad now is a right button (opens the right click menu).

Any ideas how to fix this?

P.S. I have two sets of buttons one above and one below the touchpad, it is the one above the touchpad that has the problem while the one below it is fine.

I actually just updated the driver software and it worked

If you have a mouse, you can use it to delete the touch pad driver and re-install it.

When using the keyboard, it seems to disable the trackpont's left click button for a couple seconds. It doesn't disable the trackpad or the pointer part of the trackpoint, or even the right or middle click buttons. Only the left click. This is very annoying for playing any kind of games on the machine, and I can't find any setting or registry entry that seems to fix it. Does anyone have an idea of what can be done?

So, I got this computer a few days ago and it works great. Only problem is that every time I switch out of tablet mode or if I open it, my cursor moves up, and I have to tap the trackpoint a lot in order for it to stop. I took it off and I realized that if I hold down the b button hard enough, it actually moves the cursor up. Is there any way to fix this irregular trackpoint behavior? It's probably hardware related, so I might have to send it in for repair (ugh).

Hi Lenovo, Currently the Trackpoint's middle button can only do either scrolling or middle mouse button click in Windows. This behavior can be set in lenovo vantage or mouse settings. Could you provide option to enable both scrolling and middle mouse click functions at same time? In linux this is already supported out of the box for a long time. The only workaround in windows is by using third party software called TPMiddle, but this software only works with Synaptics trackpoint, it doesn't work with Elan or ALPS trackpoint.
