Thinkpad T400 Backlight Issue

Q: Thinkpad T400 Backlight Issue

Now, I suspect that the inverters are fine and I'm wondering about the LCD switch or LCD cable. I suppose I could just buy a cable, but before that, I wanted to take a step back and try to figure out if I'm overlooking anything. I've not been able to find a picture or location of the t400 lcd switch in either the lenovo hardware manual for the t400 or elsewhere online.Hi,I've got a thinkpad t400 with CCFL backlight. I recently replaced a bad LCD (the backlight was working at the time) with a new one. However, while the new screen works, it's backlight did not. I ordered a new inverter and plugged that in - still didn't work. I grabbed the old screen's backlight and tried it with both inverters - did not come on. I then grabbed another laptop I have and plugged in the old screen's backlight - it came on. Plugged in the new screen's backlight (while lcd was still plugged into the thinkpad), it's backlight came on.So, I know both backlights are fine, and suspected I just had a crappy inverter. I got a replacement new inverter and it still doesn't work. Tried new lcd and old backlight with all three again, no dice. Backlights still turn on when connected to spare laptop. So I now suspect the inverters are fine. I noticed that the laptop no longer goes to sleep or hibernation when the lid is closed. I changed the power settings so that it should sleep or hibernate, tried each power mode and it still refuses to do so. So I think the issue is with the switch that detects when the lid is closed. Does anyone know where this switch is located on the t400?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all I have 2016 thinkpad yoga 12 still under warrenty, I barely used it. Suddenly, the trackpad stopped working. Its even not recognized by the windows 10. Also, I noticed that the keyboard back light is not working and the cpu fan is not blowing at all anymore. I tried a linux usb boot stick to make sure that it is a HW problem. Still not qorking under linux too ( obviously a HW probelm). I like this device alot but I think it wont be able to perform in summer because of the fan issue. Currently, I am out of country and I have no access to lenovo support. Can any one help me please?

Hi all, I've been searching the forums about this topic, but I haven't found anything specific for my case: Symptoms: After turning on the laptop, the screen works fine for a few seconds and then it goes dark. The LCD display is working correclty, but with no backlight (still can see the screen if I use an external light source like a flashlight. All indicator lights (wifi, power, battery) work correctly.Image is displayed correctly if connected to external monitor.Problem happens in windows and BIOS (rules out driver issue).Realized that if I turn down the brightness all the way down and then press fn + F7 or if I close and open the lid, the screen would light up back again. If I turn the birghtness up, the screen goes dark again, but if I repeat step 4 it still works. After a few minutes of operating at minimun brightness, I can turn it all the way up and it won't go dark.Yesterday the backlight finally went out for good and not working at all.I'm trying to figure out if it's an issue with the inverter, mobo fuse or cable. Maybe someone here has seen these specific symptoms before and could lend me some knowledge and save me some time in debugging this issue. Thanks

A:T400 no screen backlight

Assuming you have a CCFL screen (with an inverter), the inverter is most likely.  Some T400 have CCFL, some have LED.  With LED panel, it is probably bad panel.

Hi, I've searched the forums and elsewhere online, and I can't find any real help for this issue. I'm running Win 7, and I have the most up-to-date drivers from the Lenovo site. I have turned on loudness equalization, but it has not helped the problem. This is an across-the-board problem. What I mean by that is, this problem persists regardless of the application, which I happen to be using. For instance, I use Media Player Classic: Home Cinema to watch movies. If the volume is at 0%, as I begin adjusting it upward, the volume level rises. However, as I reach about 70%, the volume stops increasing. There are audio adjustments w/in the application to boost the volume, but they serve to provide minimal effects. Overall, the volume is incredibly low. If you're sitting more than a few feet away from the laptop, it is inaudible. I don't know what else to do, and I was hoping that someone might offer some assistance. Thank you.  Jeff

How about uninstall your current Conexant driver and install custom Dolby driver from my signature link? It should help to boost a lot. In fact, T400 speakers are louder than other new T-series speaker.

A:thinkpad T400 Ram Upgrade

RAM: You need a minimum of PC3-8500 1066MHz DDR3. However faster chips like PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3 or PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 will work fine as well.

If there's little or no difference in price I'd buy the faster memory. The reason is that if I upgrade to a new(er) notebook it's more likely the RAM will work at full speed on that system.

Note also that while you can upgrade to a maximum of 8GB (2x 4GB) with a 32-bit OS like WinXP-32 you won't be able to utilize more than 3GB.

SSD: Any of the drives you've listed will work well.

I honestly have no clue what could have caused this!  I turned it on this morning & it was stuck on the booting screen. It read "ThinkPad" in large letters followed by "To interrupt normal start up, press the blue ThinkVantage button." I waited for about a half hour for it to boot & it never did. I of course pressed the ThinkVantage button & to my dismay...nothing happened. Afterwards, I unplugged it & removed the battery pack. I then plugged it back in & attempted to start it up again. Once again, nothing. I unplugged it again & attached the battery pack. At that point I tried starting it up again and N O T H I N G!  What do I do?!

Hi Punittiwari3353,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

Have you checked it individually with battery and without battery?
Did you check with different power adapter or with different power socket?
Is the CPU fan running with regular speed?
Boot the system into ?Safe mode? and check if the issue persists there also?

Hope this helps. Do post back if the issue persists!

Best regards,

I have a thinkpad T400. Couple of months ago the problem started. I could not shut it down it just keep re-booting. I had to press and hold the start button to shut it. Now it won't boot at all. It beeps 1-3-3-1 and just sits there. When I press start button all lights come ON for a while and after only battery , AC and Ready lights stay ON. Here are few things I did so far without any luck: 1. Removed battery and AC adaptor waited few minutes put it back - same problem2. Removed CMOS battery. DIMM cards waited for ten minutes replaced - same problem tried with swapping  DIMM cards - when I put only one card on top slot it says put the card on zero "bottom" position. After placing the Mem card on the bottom slot no thing happens. It beeps again and sit. When I checked in the manual it says either DIMM or System board. I do not know which one is giving me the problem. I just do not want to replace all parts without knowing. Can any body help please or had similar issue and solutions if you managed to solve it. Thank you. Roshni

It all started when I installed Win 7 after a Linux usage for a couple of months. First I thought it was uTorrent that screwed it up so I removed it but it still gave BSODs at least once a day. Haven't had the energy to do anything about it until now so now I'm asking you guys for advice how to get rid of it.
I have activated minidump in Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Setting in Startup and Recovery > Small memory dump (256KB) under System failure.
Got a BSOD a couple of minutes ago but I didn't get a minidump output from it.

Attached the four debug reports I got from SF Diagnostic Tool.

Appreciate any help I can get,

Hi all -I know I am talking about a very old machine but I am hoping there is someone out there that would be willing and able to provide helpful  advice - some background -  in my dire need I purchased a 'refurb' Lenovo Thinkpad T400 from who now turns out to be an unreputable seller - I was silly enough not to worry about recovery disks or even a 30 day warranty - now I am paying dearly for my negligence.  This machine has had issues from day one that I thought I could work my way thru reading forums, Lenovo site etc. but nothing has worked.  My first challenge was trying to just get the right-click on touchpad to produce context menu - I searched and searched and reluctantly loaded 3rd party softwares to no avail.  I gave up on that only to discovered that when I loaded any antimalware program my cursor would not open that program nor would it open any other program on the machine. So I uninstalled the antimalware. So I can't really run to see if I have a virus.  To make a long story short right now NONE of the function keys work nor the THINKVANTAGE.  When I reboot and attempt to go to safe mode, bios utility I get nothing except opening up windows where sometimes the cursor will open a program or not and the trying to open programs from the start menu or the task bar is hit or miss same happens in the start menu and trying to open a browser.  I am running on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and would like to go back to factory settings, but ag... Hi,

I have a T400 which has the following two display adapters:

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series
Mobile Intel(R) 45 Express Chipset Family

After installing Windows 7 and checking device manager, the ATI adapter does show up under the "Display adapters' section, but it has a ! sign on it, and if I click for details, it says:

I tried downoading and installing this:

and when I rebooted, it went through some diagnostic tests in a cmd window to finish installation. But when I checked the device manager again, the ATI adapter still says it cannot start.

I also tried this:

ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver

which I got to by selecting W7 32-bit > Mobility Radeon > Mobility Radeon HD 3000 series.

It seemed to install OK, but I got a message which I've gotten with previous attempts, which says:

"The Catalyst Control Center is not supported by the driver version of your enambled graphics adapter. Please update your ATI graphics driver, or enable your ATI adapter using the Displays manager."

I went to the device manager, right-clicked on the ATI adapter and did Update Driver, and it did at first find a better match but said it couldn't be installed with the same error message from above (Code 10). Now, when I try to update the driver again, it says... Read more

First, my t400 would only boot with power cord unplugged. Then it stopped booting altogether. I read to press the power button 10 times and hold it on the tenth time and to unscrew the palm rest to unplug the little battery for 30 seconds. That is the only way I can get it to boot now. I picked up a new regular battery today thinking it might be related but that hasn't solved it. Any ideas?

I looked at it closer and to get it to start i don't press the power button at all. I unplug the power cord and after unplugging the CMOS battery for awhile i just plug the power cord back in and it starts up. The first thing i see as it starts up is an error message about a bad CMOS checksum and then i have to change the date/time in the BIOS or it yells at me to do it. After all that it boots into windows 7. Once it is in windows no matter what i do to change the settings of what the power button does it still doesn't do anything. I can restart it fine but once i shut it down it the CMOS battery needs to be reset to get it going again.

I am having a problem with a ThinkPad Helix and was looking for some advice on the troubleshooting process. The tablet was dropped and it suffered some damage. When I received the tablet I noticed that it still powered on but there was no video. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the monitor is still displaying video but it is very dim. When I shine a flashlight to the monitor I can see the windows logon screen and the touch panel recognizes me tapping the screen. The first thing that I tried was replacing the cables that connect the monitor to the motherboard as some of them looked like they had forcefully been removed. This had no effect on the issue as the monitor was still very dim when I powered it on. I thought that the monitor was the problem and decided to replace the entire screen assembly. I was able to get another monitor that matched the part number of mine and swapped it with the old one. When I turned it on after swapping the monitor I stil the had a very dim screen. If it wasn't the monitor or the cables that connect the monitor to the motherboard then the only thing that was left was the motherboard. Again, I found a replacement motherboard for the unit and swapped it. When I powered it on I still had the same issue as before, very dim video. I am still unsure as to what could be causing the issue and any help would be greatly appreciated. It doesn't look like the thinkpad helix has an lcd inverter or I would have tried replacing that first.... Read more

A:ThinkPad Helix No LCD Backlight

First, I have never taken a Helix apart, so I am not an expert. On a normal notebook, when you close the lid, there is a Hall Sensor (magnetic switch) that is tripped when the LCD approaches the palmrest by a magnet in the palmrest. If you have a dock on the helix, I would guess it has a magnet so that the machine can capture the "lid closed" event. My guess is that you broke the sensor inside the screen assembly. The sensor is usually somewhere around the outside of the screen. If you have a dock, you might be able to find the magnet by sliding something like a paper clip around the face

Hi,I bought a Thinkpad X240 a few months ago, it was working perfectly except the know bug of the "bottom left corner" which happened a few times. But a few days ago, the screen backlight suddenly stopped working. I put it to sleep, I came back home, I opened the lid and the screen didn't light up.The screen itself works perfectly (if you put a light on it you can see what's displayed), and there's no other problem. This doesn't seem to be a software problem since I doesn't work in the BIOS, nor in Windows or Linux.. Why does the backlight would suddenly stop working ? Thanks in advance,

A:Thinkpad X240 no backlight

Same here. The backlight is out in the bios as well so I believe mine is a hardware problem. For other thinkpads, I find people saying this is a surface mount fuse on the motherboard and can be "fixed" by bridging the fuse with solder. But I can't find a fuse near the display port that is bad. The most likely fuse I find is F2 on the backside of the board near the display port, but it doesn't measure as an option circuit so I don't think that one is bad. I will probably buy another broken laptop and swap parts.

A while back, user "raybay" posted some guidance on replacing the backlight and/or inverter on an ibm thinkpad r51 notebook. Here is a quote:

Inverter.
That is a very high price for an inverter for an R51, but the R51 is a very rare computer... so you may have to pay it.
you need a very good quality #1 hard steel philips screw driver, great care in removing and replacing the screw covers, and the time it takes to remove and replace 18 screws. But the inverter just plugs in. Mark all your screws as you remove them as they are not all the same length or diameter. But the most important function is removing the screw hole covers so you can use them again. You will benefit from a very, very thin flat blade screw driver or other tool to lift the screw covers out and off. You will need a nice adhesive that remains soft when you replace them.
It is very rare for an inverter to go out in that model.
What I'm wondering is, this sounds like instructions for replacing just the inverter, but what if my problem is with my backlight as well (or instead)? Apparently they can also be replaced, but I've read suggestions that this may involve soldering. If you are lurking, raybay, do you know specifically what is required to replace the backlight on this model?

A:Replacing backlight/inverter on thinkpad r51

You can get the inverter, new, on eBay for $9.95 on up to $20... DO NOT BUY A USED ONE, and DO NOT BUY ONE FOR A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT MODEL. It is the screen that determines the model number... and that inverter/backlight is part of that particular model number.
Your inverter and your backlight are basically the same thing the failure of one affects the other... or they are in the same device depending on the laptop.
None of the IBM Lenovo units need soldering... but you have to remove about 20 screws, and remove the rubberized screw covers... so making it pretty again when you are done is the hard part... as you have to learn how to reapply the screw covers and the rubberized stickum.
USE VERY GOOD, VERY TOUGH TOOLS. DO NOT USE TOOLS that wear easily. Cheap toosl will mar the screws and ruin stuff.
First you buy the backlight.
Second, remove the keyboard.
Third, you remove the screw covers with a very thin device like a 1/2 or #1 flat screw driver, only with thinner metal... and some tweezers to lift off and store the screw covers which are mostly very thin, round flat rubber disks.
You need some soft of bowl or series of cups where you can put the different size screws. You need to keep a chart of which size screws come from where... Unless you have a good mind for those sorts of things and nobody does.
You may find it easier to remove the back of the computer where the screen is kept... and CAREFULLY remove the ribbon cable for the screen that plugs in beneath the keybo... Read more

I have just received my new T470p this afternoon and despite many "Google" searches I cannot get the keyboard backlight to work. I tried tech. support, but as it was after 6PM they were closed and this is driving me mad! Could it be a faulty device? I do not want to go through the motions of setting-up my PC if it has to be replaced. All answers gratefully received.

So I received my brand new Thinkpad E560 this week. All excited I booted it up for the first timeand I immediatly noticed this pretty significant backlight bleeding. I was wondering if this is considered normal?I have seen backlight bleeding but never have I seen it this bad. I'm considering contacting Lenovo but I was wondering what you guys think? (picture quality not great but you get the idea)http://imgur.com/JpeT3RS

Hey everyone, Recently bought this laptop. Loving everything about it. However, I did a fresh install of Windows 10 (it wasn't an upgrade from Win8.1, but rather a new install of Win10 after I replaced the harddrive to a 1TB SSD). Since then I've reinstalled everything I could get from the site. Every Lenovo driver set and utility. Updated the BIOS. Consulted the Solution Center. Ran scans from the utilities and the site. I've literally tried EVERYTHING that's obvious, and I can't get the backlight to come on at all. When I first received the laptop with the old harddrive, the backlight worked just fine. Since I put in the new SSD with a fresh install, I cannot for the life of me get it to turn on. Pressing Fn+SPACE gets it to show the little icon on screen that it's SUPPOSED to be turned on, but it isn't on. So I'm at a loss here. I sincerely doubt it's a hardware issue, because literally the only thing that's changed is the harddrive. If there's a specific driver for the keyboard backlight, I'd love to know about it. Thanks in advance!

A:Thinkpad Yoga 14 - keyboard backlight WILL NOT TUR...

Hi. welcome to the forum.

Do you want to try out something just to check that the keyboard light is working?
I have a TP Yoga 14 here and when I access the BIOS the keyboard lights up when I press "FN+Space", give it a try if it works for you.

I do not know if it requires an special driver, but I'm using the Windows 10 that was updated over the Win8.1 that came included.

The other things that cames to my mind is trying to boot other OS from the USB and see if the keyboard lights up.

Regards

As the title says, my trackpoint, keyboard backlight and touchpad have stopped working. The problem happened a few weeks after I updated from windows 8.1 to windows 10. I have tried updating ultranav drivers, resetting windows 10 (which was a bit of a pain given that I will now have to reinstall all my software) and then reverting to windows 8.1 after none of the above worked. Fortunately my touchscreen and mouse support is still ok, but I can't work in low light conditions without my keyboard light. Can anyone help? I see that some Yoga 12 users report similar problems after a fuse fails. Does anyone know if this occurs on the S1 Yoga?

Hello, I replaced the screen on this computer, but the backlight does not work. I tried with the old screen, same problem. Is it possible that a fuse is HS? Where can this fuse be located? Thank you

After latest update, my Thinkpad Yoga 12 keyboard won´t light up on Fn + space. It does light up on startup. I have installed the latest Thinkpad Hotkey Features Integration drivers. Is this reason for me to revert to win 8.1, or is there a solution? I cannot find the older 8.78.00 Hotkey driver anywhere. Would that work better?

Hi
Welcome to the forums.

I'm not sure what can be the issue, but can you try checking the "Lenovo Settings" application to check if your keyboard backlight turns on?
?
The Lenovo Settings is on the Windows Store , but you also need to install the Dependecy Package.

But just checking the support site I found there is a BIOS update that says:
(1.08)
- (Fix) Fixed an issue that "Fn + Space" cannot control KB backlight after exit shipping mode.

Please double check if this is your model support site. Maybe you should apply that BIOS update too.

I hope this helps.

Hello Community Members, My T430s boots up, but there is no backlight on the screen-it is totally black. After shining a light on the screen, I noticed the text and login screen is actually visible.  I brought a new screen, thinking this would solve the problem, but the same things happened. Thank you,Alice

Hello,  I'm having an issue on my T400 (Windows 7, 32 bit) where the laptop shows that it is plugged in but not charging.  I've tried the usual steps with removing the battery from device manager and rebooting, but it doesn't seem to work.  I've also tried using a different power supply and I still get the same result.  I also get the beep when I plug/unplug the power.    The computer will run with just AC power connected to it and it does seem to run on the battery.  I didn't run it too much because the battery is at about 12%.  Will a new battery fix the issue?  I got the laptop as they were getting rid of it at work, the battery has been working fine for almost a year and I just noticed the issue the other day.

Hi,
Over the past year, since I upgraded the memory on my IBM R31 Thinkpad, I have had intermittent problems with my screen blacking out. It's not completely gone, just extremely dim, but I can make out the things on screen by using a torch. At first, I was able to trigger it back by leaving the lid open and never closing it, taking all the usbs and plugs out of the back, or re-starting it.

However, it seems like nothing I do will trigger it on now. I've done a search and apparently the commonest cause is that the inverter needs replacing. Would this seem like a sensible thing to buy?

The only thing I'm thinking now is, i've had this laptop for 5 years now!! I'm not sure if it's worth fixing or upgrading anymore. I mean, I love it, just cos it's lasted this long, i've upgraded the memory from 128mb to 384mb and i've bought a wireless card for it but would it be worth trying to buy and fix myself a new inverter or just buy a new laptop?

Thanks!!

A:IBM Thinkpad - Backlight screen black.. inverter replacement?

Well the most common things would be the inverter board you linked to, or the backlight bulb itself.

If the laptop still suits your needs, in terms of performance than its much cheaper to just fix this one, than buy another laptop of similar quality.

The great think about IBM is the great support. Here is a link to the hardware manual for the R30 model.
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-39797.html
It should tell you how to get at the inverter and bulb.

Even if you do get a new laptop, its still worth it to fix this one up as a backup laptop. 20-30 pounds and a couple hours to fix it isn't that bad.

And i believe its called a flashlight not a torch. You could burn the house down with a torch

I have a ThinkPad Yoga 14, which has a keyboard backlight that can be turned on and off by pressing Fn+Space. Recently I've found that if I turn it off, it sometimes stays on. In this state it will flicker when the computer is tapped or bumped, or just moved around, and when placed at certain angles it will stay off. If I turn it on, it stays on consistently ? it's only when it's set to off that it doesn't work right. It seems like there must be a loose connection in there or something. Does this sound like something that can be easily fixed?

Hi, Has anyone installed 8GB of RAM on a T400 (model 2768 CTO with latest BIOS) ?  If so what brand / spec works? I've just tried installing 2 x 4Gb Corsair DDR3 PC3-8500.  It didn't work.  I needded to get my motherboard replaced under my warranty! The info on the Lenovo site is contradictory as to what the max RAM supported is, either 4GB or 8GB. I really need more than 4GB to run virtual machines, so if it's possible I'd like to know how. Regards, Andrew

A:T400 - 8GB Maximum RAM / Memory Issue!

The T400 support max 8gb of RAM, but some info from Lenovo is old and outdated because at some point there was no 4gb memory modules available so even if the chipset did support 8gb of RAM there was nowhere you could actually buy the 4gb modules. Now the 4gb modules been available for some time and it should work fine. I have added 8gb of RAM for the T400 and it's working fine. I bought the RAM from Lenovo. Part no: 55Y3708Spec: SO DIMM 204-pins - DDR3 - 1066 MHz / PC3-8500 - 1.5 V, Non-EEC I cannot see why the Corsair shouldn't work, but i never tried so cannot say for sure. -gan

My new Thinkpad T470s has a backlight keyboard.  The User's Manual indicated that there are four backlight modes: Off, Low, High, and Auto.  However, pressing Fn+Space key would cycle through Off/Low/High modes only.  Any suggestions on how to turn on the "auto" backlight mode?

A:Thinkpad T470s keyboard backlight auto mode missing

Hi,

Check the Lenovo Settings app. IIRC that's where the auto option is available.

I don't have LS installed on the ThinkPad I'm typing on so can't tell you exactly where.

Has anyone with the 3k displays experienced half of the screen dimming and backlight flashing while on battery power? This is happening on my W540 when the battery reaches about 30%, it first started at about 50%. I ran the battery reset gauge which seems to postpone the issue until the battery is lower around the 30% (better now). This is not a Windows/driver issue because at about 5-6% it happens in bios.I am leaning towards a defective battery or LCD inverter which appears to be attached to the LCD itself.  Computer runs fine on AC and full battery I took the whole thing apart and checked cables, seems fine. Anyone else who has had this problem please help me with the solution, what to replace.  Thank you
