I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If the place where you are trying to save your file is unavailable, save the file to a different location.

If you have tried to use an unusual character in the file name, remove it from the file name.

For example, the error message

The folder "(path)" isn't accessible. It may be on an unavailable volume, or protected with a password."

...is either caused by a genuinely unavailable destination, or it can be caused by having the "<" or ">" symbol in the file name.

Or.... Click Save As and save the file as an .rtf file insted.

Hello, I am a consultant in central Texas and I have a customer that does not recall the chronology of how he got into this situation but basically, I'll attempt to explain. He has Word 2000 installed on an XP Pro machine. He wants to do a mailing that 2000 is unable to handle. We found that 97 will do the desired process with no problem. I tried to install Word 97 to his computer but the setup program indicates that 97 is already on the machine. There is no trace of Word 97 that I can find. The customer thinks that he has vacillated between 97 and 2000 at least twice. I just want both on this machine at the same time. I could uninstall both and then reinstall 2000 then 97 and I think it will work but I was hoping to avoid the uninstalls. Any ideas?

A:Unable to install Word 97 on Word 2000 machine

It sounds like Uncle Bill left some fragments in the registry (or, hopefully, just a file used to flag Word'97's presence).

Hopefully you are using "My Documents" to save everything created in MSWord (either version); that will make it pretty easy to back up the files you don't want to take chances on. Burn a couple CDs or DVDs as needed/if available.

Check the Add/Delete Programs- to see which version/s are installed. I would uninstall each one- re-starting the computer between uninstalls.

With operating systems it makes a difference in which order they are installed; I would follow the same rule for the same reasons--- install the older one first (Word 97). Paranoia makes me want to shut down & reboot between versions. Then install Word 2000.

Good luck.

One of my user is having this problem on her Windows XP PC:

Dell GX260 with Windows XP Professional running 512MB RAM, Office XP, Acrobat 5.0

When opening a Word file & edited in Word XP, the user cannot SAVE or use SAVE AS the file, when try to exit out the file, get prompt to either SAVE, CLOSE, or CANCEL the file, at that point it will still not save the file, the only way to exit the file is to hit CLOSE to exit.

I initially thought this might be a Word Xp problem, so I ran the repair tool in Office XP, that did not fix it.

I then uninstalled Office XP, reinstalled Office XP, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then ran the Office update to download the latest patches from MicroSoft, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then UNINSTALLED Acrobat 5.0 from the PC, that FIXED the problem.

WITHOUT Acrobat 5.0 on her PC, the user was now able to open & edit a Word file, and able to SAVE the edited file, also able use SAVE AS to save the file as a new copy.

I then reinstalled Acrobat 5.0 thinking the previous copy of Acrobat 5.0 on the PC might be corrupted, as soon as Acrobat 5.0 was back on the PC, the same problem with the SAVE feature came back in Word XP.

I then installed the patch update for Acrobat 5.0, that did not fix the problem.

At this point, I am out of clues on how to fix it....The user tried Acrobat 6.0 before on the same PC, but decided to reverse back to Acrobat 5.0 because of format problem with 6.0.......so Acrobat 6.0 is no... Read more

My daughter has been working on a major final year high school project for several weeks using Word 2000 XP. She has consistently saved the file to floppy disk so as to swap between home and school PC but neglected to save to the HDD. Upon completing the project she attempted to load the final saved file from the floppy. To her great distress the file loaded in an apparently corrupted form with lines of text interspersed with numerous blocks of blank squares. The file seemed about double the original size, text was in an italic font and seemed to be randomly scattered and/or missing sections. She is naturally distraught at the possibility of having lost most of the data she spent weeks compiling and the deadline for submission looming. Can the file be reconstituted or recovered in the correct format. Why would this happen?. Any help/advice would be greatfully received. As a not so computer savy mum I am helpless to assist her.

I had this problem a couple of months ago and it seemed to go away and now is back. I am writing a users manual and its getting big (4.5mb). Before when the file got to about 1mb, whenever I tried to save it (using either save or save as) word would abort and i'ld loose everything. I got around it by keeping my sections to under 1mb.

I am now ready to turn the document over to operations for their use and couple of weeks ago merged all 8 sections into a single document to see if I could. I did and its just over 4.5mb. There is 290 pages, over 200 screen snapshots pasted in as pictures and its 372,241 characters long. I was editing the document with no problems. Then all of a sudden word started aborting again.

When I try to save, the progress bar moves almost all the way to the end, the light on the USB drive flickers and then word aborts. The error message I see is for

WINWORD.EXE - Application Error

The instruction at "0x30a917b1" referenced memory at "0x00000661". The memory could not be "read".

and when I click on ok to terminate I loose everything and end up with a .tmp file in my saved folder. Efforts to open the document again results in it being locked and I have to completely log off to free up the document.

A:word 2000 aborts with a large file save

Hi,

Turn the document into a PDF file using Adobe Acrobat or any free PDF file creator. There are numerous.

Any printer will be able to work better with a PDF file in preference to MS Word. Especially when you have pictures etc in it, producing a large file.

With a large MS Word document you would be better saving the various chapters individually.

Word often has problems with large files.

How much memory & what processor speed.

We used FrontPage 2000 to create our intranet. In the intranet we have some links to Word 97 documents. The one's that we notice we're having a problem with are the performance review documents. If I go into one of them through the links on the intranet everything works fine. The problem occurs when I want to save a soft copy to my hard drive. It runs through the save options fine but when I go to open it from the page that it creates on my hard drive the document doesn't come up. I get an error that the page could not be displayed. If I go into the folder that was created when I saved it I can open the Word 97 document but it ends up blank. This document is password protected so maybe that's the problem, but I was hoping that a Save As would save the information for offline storage. Does this make sense? I tried saving it in every possible way (that IE5.5 would allow me to save it in) and every one of them gives me a blank copy of the form. All of the information typed into it while on the intranet is gone. Some help, ideas, etc. would be great. As I said, I'm thinking that if the documents weren't read only we wouldn't be having this problem. Let me know if that's accurate. Thanks.

A:Word 97 & Front Page 2000 Save Properties

Just maybe this is what's happening:

Word forms, when copy and pasted, lose their protection. Once you lose protection, data is usually lost as well. Have you tried right-clicking on the hyperlink and hit "save target as" instead of opening the document/page?

If that doesn't help, you'll need to let me know what format you're getting out of it the other ways--I assume html.

I have just finished setting up a new Vista computer, installed programs including Office 2000 and transferred all of my Word documents from the old XP computer. Word works in the new machine when I open a new Word document; but, when I open a document that was created on the old machine, a single spaced document displays as a double spaced document, etc. The program "says" that the document is single spaced, though it isn't. Again this doesn't occur in a new document, just the imported docs? Any ideas?

I did the same thing on a Vista machine, was prompted for username and password, put in the same username and password and got in.
Is there some security option in Win7 I need to tweak?

Thanks,

I don't know what on earth happens to my computer. First, this afternoon my computer suddenly slows down A LOT...like for example when I try to open the Windows Media Player it can't open and a message says it's due to low memory...when I was not using any other programs...and then everything else is slow...I can print articles though. Later I restart the computer but it stays the same. Then after some time strangely it gets back to normal by itself and I thought everything's over.
But then tonight when I turn on the computer the problem comes back again. Can't open some high-memory programs...even the Kerio firewall program disappears by itself! In addition, I find that all of a sudden I can't use the cut/copy/paste function on virtually any program that has that function...Word, Notepad, Windows. I was particularly frustrated as I was doing some assignment that becomes quite inconvenient without those functions. And the Edit/Save function on the Internet window was also blocked. ("Luckily" the Save function in Word was not blocked.) Could someone suggest what has happened? Thanks a lot.

Need help trying to save a word 2007 document. Am running Windows Vista. I have been working on this document for the past couple of days, a high school maths investigation with lots of equations and graphs copied over from 'Autograph' a 3d graphing software. I have been able to save it with ease with all this stuff on it until an hour ago. When I press CTRL+S it opens up the save as box (even though i've already saved it before). Then when i press save in this dialog box the box closes for a half a second before opening again without me pressing anything. I do it again and again and notice the little loading bar that tells you it's saving in the bottom right hand corner of the document gets stuck and then stops when the box opens up again. I've tried to rename it and this doesn't work. i copied it into an old word document and then saved that document and that document wouldn't save either. i got rid of it off that document and the old document saved perfectly. I closed it just to check it was actually not saving and it isn't. Is there something wrong with my document? or is it word? please help!

I have two problems with Word 2003.

First, regardless of any changes made to a document, when I close the application I do not get a prompt asking if I want to save the changes.

Second, I cannot open more than one document at a time. If I have a document open, and I try to open a second document, it flashes the second document on the screen briefly and then closes it, leaving me with my first document open. There are no windows minimized to the taskbar, and there are no documents (other than the first document I opened) listed in the Window menu of Word.

I have installed all updates and service packs (both for Office 2003 and for Windows XP), and I am not using any 3rd party add-ins. I even tried uninstalling all Office related applications and reinstalling. No dice.

This has been going on for quite some time now, and I cannot find ANY information that seems to relate. I am begging for help here, so anything is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There is no platform to install MS Word 2000?
All of the PCs are already pre-installed MS 2010 or 2007 upon installation.

If that's causing the problem, how to make the installation proceed?

Thanks for any help in advance.

A:Microsoft Word 2000 aka MS Word 2000 - Sending Email - Need Help Configuring

Word itself does not send (or receive) e-mail messages. You may configure Word to be your e-mail editor, but it still requires an e-mail program (such as MS Outlook) to send messages.

You can send e-mails from within Word by using File, Send To, Mail Recipient (or Mail Recipient as Attachment), but this still uses Outlook to do the sending and receiving.

Also, in another document, when I double click embedded equations (written using equation editor on another PC), equation editor doesn't launch itself neither is there any error message. This problem is document specific.

Anyone..any ideas?? Please advise!!

Print Layout view is fine.

In the format Object -> Layout -> Wrapping Style (inline with Text) is greyed out.

Printing of the document is also fine..it's just the problem with Normal view.

I had problems with pictures not getting displayed at all. I could only see blank screen and ocassional picture. This problem was solved by reducing the hardware accelaration. This can be done by display properties->settings->troubleshoot->hardware acceleration. Try lowering it to halfway or less and see if this solves the problem. It solved my problem.

Running Windows 7 on my desktop. (MS Word on my Windows 10 Dell laptop is trouble-free.) It constantly freezes (every 3rd or 4th time I save during an editing session) on save or save as....have to reboot the program. Happens on all docs. Looked this issue up online, the "solutions" didn't work for anyone. I uninstalled/reinstalled to no avail....it was solid for 3 days, now back to freezing. Any ideas?

I have a Toshiba A55 laptop. I am running XP Home SP2 and Office Professional 2003 SP2. All utilites function normally with the exception of Word. The file menu shows "save" and "save as" to be disabled (greyed out). It will save with control-S, and I am able to save to any location I want. I am not receiving any error messages. All updates for XP and Office are current. No viruses or other malware. I have seen issues with Ofice SP2 concerning HP systems but they usually either lock up or generate errors. I do not have either of these problems. I have been looking for a solution for a few days to no avail. Any suggestions would be helpful.

A:Word 2003 save/save as disabled

I found my own solution. Apparently, the normal.dot template became corrupted. Deleted the file, and did not let word reload the saved version, creating a new one. Fixed the problem. Wanted to post in case someone else was dealing with the same issue.

I am running Vista and Word 2007. I would like to save the document as a Word 2003 document so it can be opened in older versions of Word. I use "save as" and select Save as Word 97-2003, but when I try to open this document on an older machine "Windows XP and Word 2003" it opens with a lots of symbols and then the text is jumbled into one continuous paragraph.

I know there is a complatibility pack that can be downloaded for Word 2003 that will allow users to open Word 2007 documents, but I would still like to be able to "save as" Word 97-2003 so people without this compatability pack can still open this document.

Any help?

Thanks,
Danny

Received a few MS Excel files from an outside vendor as e-mail attachment. I am able to save the attachement to My Doc or desktop and then open or open them directly from Outlook 2003 or 2007.

But when I tried to save the doc with or without making changes, the spreadsheet just sits there and saying Saving at the bottom. I waited several miniutes to be saved, but it just sits there. It does not taking any extra resources. On Application event viewer, it just displayes application hang error.

Recently upgraded my other computer operating Win 98 from Office 97 to 2000.
All is finally well with the settings after seemingly endless tweaks and changes except for one nagging problem. If I use Word as the email editor in Outlook (html), the "text" portion only of the email (not subject box-it is black text) is sent and arrives in a very light lime green color! You can barely read it.If I remove Word as the editor, then the text is in black--nice and clear.
I have spent hours playing with the settings in Word changing between automatic and black.I have checked and rechecked the Outlook settings.I can't shake this light lime green text with Word as the editor and I want Word as the editor--very frustrating..And something else important and related....
When you use Outlook to fax,(Symantec Fax Starter), the text arrives on all fax machines, but it is very "faint", however the subject and cover sheet are dark normal text, which makes me think it is being transmitted as light lime green, but showing up faint black as fax machines have only black shades.
Is there a setting somewhere in Windows that is impacting on Word? I've buzzed around the control panel and no success. I don't know why I can't pinpoint this--probably too easy and right there staring at me..........help!

Hi There

This is not a macro question. I have been at this for hours now with no success. I have a picture in MS word 2000. The picture is text with a box around the text. See attached MS Word 2000 file. I want to copy this picture into Excel 2000. But when I do a copy and paste, it does paste into Excel but just the box shows up and not the writing. Can someone out there copy it and paste it for me in Excel 2000 and send it to me?? I can then copy it from your Excel spread sheet into my Excel spread sheet.

Thanks for your help in this.

today i get an error that says Word can't reestablish a DDE connection with Microsoft Query to complete the task.

Do you know why or what happened...if you don't have time to answer, if you could just point me in the direction of a document it would be helpful.

Hi folks,

I have this problem that is hard to search for on Google. We have a lot of word 2000 documents connected to a simpel text data file (data.doc) that is used with mail merge.

Here is our process:
1.) data.doc is opened, filled with all variablenames we can use in our documents (name, country, etc.)
2.) data.doc is opened, filled with the actual data (from a database) belonging to the variables name (Kees, Japan, etc.)
3.) Our vb.net 2008 application does step 1 and 2, then starts a template word 2000 document which has that data.doc file attached for mail merge. The template is now filled in with the correct data.
4.) vb.net 2008 application tells MS Word to print the document.
5.) Works fine and we have ourselves a nice document filled in with data we specified in the vb.net 2008 application.

Now comes the problem, some new computers will have office 2007 instead of office 2000 installed, during testing we have encountered that it does not error but the office 2007 installed computer does not fill in the data and just shows mergefield names <<name>> <<country>>. Also when printed out. So it seems like the datafile is not connected when opening the template in word 2007.

If we let our vb.net 2008 application show us the document visually first, we can re-attach the data file again and we can print the data, however there are 3 thing wrong with this approach:

1.) More user input which is not needed.
2.) MS Word is opening and showing, somet... Read more

I'm running Word 2013. Up till a week or so it worked fine, but now it freezes completely whenever I try to save or save as a document, new or modified, in my C:\Users\Tom\Documents folder, even though it does seem to save or save as correctly if I choose subfolders in ...documents or other separate folders.

I have tried running Word in safe mode. No help.

I have done a complete repair using control panel/programs...no help. It seemed to have uninstalled MS Office 2013 completely and reinstalled it completely, and nothing improved. One minor problem I have with this is that I've lost my product key from the original version, and I can't retrieve it from Dell, where I bought the machine, so I can't activate the reinstalled MS Office 2013! It'll run till next Tuesday, then it'll be dead. My bad, but that's not what's causing me this grief.

I have checked the hard drive with AVG PCTuneup disk doctor and found no errors. I've defragged with that routine also; no help.

I've tried running Word with and without first launching any browser. The problem occurs whether or not I've launched a browser.

To my untrained eye, it seems as if whenever I try to point Word to my normal ...documents folder, to retrieve a doc stored there so I can work on it, or save a new doc there that I've just created, or "save as" a doc I've retrieved from a different folder, Word can't find that spot on my hard drive. But i... Read more

I have had a search of the forum and can't find a solution to this, so apologies if it is a known / obvious fix for the experts!

I have created a document in Word 2000 that includes some "Windings" symbols. In opening the document on other machines in Word 97, some of them have changed font colour and turned into "Wingdings 2" and others have remained in "Wingdings" but changed font colour.
Wingdings is definitely an installed font on the machines I have tried, and it appears to be a consistent change on those different machines (i.e. replaced characters are the same and colour changesare the same).
[We are all appear to be using the same printer drivers and are using Windows 98]

A:Changing symbol font from Word 2000 to Word 97

Slight error in the above. Gone back to original machine and checked document. When opening in Word 97 the font isn't actually changing as I did use "Wingdings 2" in the original anyway, but clolours are changing and the actual symbol used in "Wingdings 2" has changed.

So basically the two problems are:

1 - font colours are changing on all the symbol font characters (whether "Wingdings" or "Wingdings 2").
2 - a different symbol is being used for those in "Wingdings 2" on the Word 97 machines.

One of the features I really liked in the DOS version of WordPerfect 5.1 was the ability, when highlighting, to simply type a character or string of chars. near the end of the relevant portion to be highlighted and have the program take the highlight directly there.

Can WORD 2000 do this? So far, all I can figure out is how to highlight either an entire word, sentence, or line, but none of them with the precision that WordPerfect 5.1 allowed.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

And GOBBLE-GOBBLE!!!
