Zbook 17 G3 and Thunderbolt Dock connection issues

Q: Zbook 17 G3 and Thunderbolt Dock connection issues

I have three ZBook 17 G3 that I cannot get a Thunderbolt dock installed correctly on. The first does not seem to want to install the thunderbolt driver, so that one's fun. The other two are having a different issue entirely. I have read multiple threads here about similar issues, and none have offered a solution for my situation.I have tried the latest BIOS, I have tried an older BIOS, I have downloaded the drivers and firmware(which won't install because it doesn't detect the dock) Whenever I plug the dock in, Windows installs the drevices, but gets stuck and winds up with a "Base System Device" that it cannot find a driver for. I have tried three different docks, and three different cables. All have the exact same result. Is there an obscure driver that I need to download to install that is not obvious in all of my searching? Any questions or clarifications, I'm happy to respond. -Keith

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I am using a Jabra UC Voice 550 Duo USB headset (Skype model) with Windows 7, for business communication. Or, at least, that was the intent: The reality is that if I use any ports on the docking station, I lose connectivity in the middle of a call. Several Skype chats started out okay, and then the microphone on my end simply stopped working (I could still hear the other party.) Also playing audio (Youtube via Google Chrome) has also resulted in eventual loss of playback. I have had to plug the USB headset directly into the laptop, in order to obtain glitch-free audio (via the on-board Intel USB root hub). The ASMedia USB root hub in the Thunderbolt docking station seems to be the culprit: I have two HP Z24n monitors plugged in via DisplayPort, and it makes no difference if I use USB ports on the monitor vs. directly plugging the headset into the Thunderbolt docking station itself. Since the laptop has limited USB ports, I would like a solution to this problem, please. The ASMedia root hub is running on driver version 1.16.33.1, dated 04.02.2016. One last thing: I got driver software for my Z24n monitors on CD-ROM, but hardly any notebooks are shipped with CD/DVD drives these days - and I could not find an online copy of the software, so I could install the display profiles.

With the issues of USB port enumeration apparently resolved, I've started rolling out zBook 15 G3s to our users.  I've discovered in doing so that the dock does not appear to support Wake-on-LAN.  Is there an option to enable this functionality or perhaps is this functionality on the roadmap to be added in a future firmare release? Thanks, Stan

I've set up my Thunderbolt 3 dock. I notice in the status, it shows "94% available (plugged in, not charging)". It has been like this for the past two days. Does the battery have to reach a certain threshold, before charging? Or is this normal? My last dock, with the 8570W would always charge to 100%.

I have an HP Zbook Thunderbolt 3 dock on my HPZbook G3.  I recently updated the BIOS and firmware to the latest version to fix other "dock" issues.  Am now at the latest for both.  The dual monitors and ethernet over the Thunderbolt 3 work, but none of the USB ports are active. I'm certain the USB ports work, becuase they used to work prior to the BIOS and firmware update.  Neither keyboard, mouse, or USB memory work in the dock. I've tried going to HP support and installing any of the updates with USB in it, but it hasn't worked.  I have a workaround--just plugging in to the notebook directly, but would like to get my dock fully functional. The Device manager doesn't show any devices with issues.  I'll try to update, but I don't know which one to look at.

hey all,  the connection about notebook and thunderbolt didn't recognize properly. it's not a question about missing drivers or firmware. if i work in the office everything is fine. let explain the situation. configuration:zbook 15 g3, thunderbolt 3 Dock, Screen Z24n linked with display port cable, keyboard und else are connected to the docking. normally, when i come to work to the office i start up with pushing the power-on button on the thunderbolt Dock and everthing work fine. the os is starting, my screen goes on, keyboard and mouse etc. is working. Ok, no problem if all components is fixed installed on the office. if i leave the office with the notebook and work offline, there is also no problem with it. now, when i came back to the office and connect again with the dock (power, usb-c) and push the power button on the dock to start windows 10, i did't get a screen on Z24n after that. i just wait and wait, but no screen on the Z24n to logon. i opened the notebook cover and saw the windows came up properly with the logon screen. after that i closed the cover and unplug/plug the Docking cable again. about 15 seconds later the screen came up (Z24n) with the windows logon image. my assessment: the recognition about dock/notebook failed after offline working. this occurs only if i start the notebook without connection to the dock. i cant localize the problem till weeks. thanks for any helprobert

I just started having this problem today.  Updated to the latest firmware a few days back on this 150w Thunderbolt Dock P5Q58UT#ABA per the e-mail "Critical Driver Alert - Apr 12 2017 HP Thunderbolt 3 Dock Firmware (ver 1.12 Rev.A)".  Today when plugging in my secondary display is corrupted.  To note I have two of the same docks, one at home and one at work with different monitors in each location.  I'm getting the same issue in both locations.  I don't think two docks went bad and the thunderbolt ports appear to be functioning.  Is there a way to rollback the firmware on these docks to see if that's the issue?   If not what are the next steps to resolve, any advice?  The normal troubleshooting steps on HP.com don't appear to address this.  Pics attached.

Hi, I've just started trying to us my Thunderbolt 3 Dock I bought a couple of weeks ago and am having a pretty major issue. Basically whenever I connect the dock to my ZBook I get a blue screen of death! I have nothing plugged into the dock (other than power). If I connect the dock whilst windows is already loaded it happens within about a minute. If I conect the dock before powering up, it happens pretty much as soon as windows loads. I'm running bios 1.12 and have update as much as I can. Whenever I try to run sp76208.exe I get:"Your host device is not ready, Firmware Upgrade Failed!!!, Please reboot your PC tnen try again!!!" And update sp75579.exe never finds the attached device. Can someone help sort this out? Matt

I am using this Zbook 17 g3 for the third week now. It is significantly fasters than the elitebook 8760W it retires. There is still some issues not resolved. I have established a routine to making docking to the thunderbolt 3 work. I have one thunderbolt 3 at home and another in the office.  I found to have the thunderbolt 3 docking work properly I need to log in to the laptop standing alone without having it connected to any device. The external keyboard and the mouse are both connected to the thunderbolt 3 via USB so when I start up they are both inactive. After the laptop starts up, I then plug in the thunderbolt 3 to the laptop to provide it with power and communication. The screen (dual monitor in both locations) flashes and then the second monitor, external keyboard and the mouse work this way. If I plug in the thunderbolt 3 connector to the laptop right when I start up, it will not communicate with the laptop which means the external keyboard, the mouse or the second monitor all will not work.  I think this is not right. I'd like to be able to walk into the office, or home office. Dock the laptop. Turn it on and every device works, like any HP docking device I used to have. But before I found an alternative my established start-up procedure is an acceptable work around. Not good enough. But I'd live with it. How is everyone else's experience with the zbook 17 g3 docking to the thunderbolt 3? Another issue is I have not yet had the USB ports on ... Read more

Hello, I have a ZBook 15 G3 that I am having a couple of issues with. The first issue has to do with the computer shutting down. It takes 10 - 15 minutes for the machine to completely power down. I decided to go into the event viewer and I noticed several warnings when the machine was powering down stating that the processors are slowed down due to a firmware issue. I have tried updating the BIOS to version 1.11. It was already at this version but I am going to try reinstalling it to see if that fixes the issue. I also noticed on the Driver page (http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=8693774&swLangOid=8&swEnvOid=4060) that under Firmware there is a "Intel Corporate Management Engine (ME) Firmware Component". I am not entirely sure what this is but as soon as the computer starts back up again I am going to try installing this to see if the issue is resolved. Anybody else know anything about fixing this firmware issue which is causing the long shutdown? This probably is not the place for me to post my next question but I will anyway. I have the Thunderbolt 3 dock for this laptop. Currently I have two monitors and one ethernet cable plugged into it which work. However USB devices that are plugged into the dock do not work. When I have these devices plugged directly into the machine then they work. I have tried looking this up and I receive the same answers which are the following.1. Make sure the BIOS is current2. Hello, as a new customer I was doing some research regarding the problems of ZBook dock that I, and others are experiencing. I ran into some issues that I have resolved myself with various workarounds and tweaks. I currently have config T7V54EA#BCM, 6700HQ + M2000M, hybrid GPU enabled, VT/VT-d enabled, pure NVMe storage and Win 10 Ent 1607 latest build Issue: Flickering monitor while launching apps that use D3D and they switch fullscreen (games eg.)Workaround: I have found that this is an issue with any Visual Studio 2008, 2010 and 2012. For me, the issues started to arise when Visual C++ component got installed. Upon launching an app that wants to switch fullscreen while leaving the shell, the monitors started flickering, eventually they came up ok, but it looked like the dock wanted to reinitialize display. What I also found out, is having installed ANY kind of a debugger also triggers this issue. Also be aware that the latest nvidia quadro drivers with Device Guard enabled, will cause the machine to BSoD upon restart, the dock must be hot-plugged, not cold-plugged to not to exhibit BSoD on 1607. Working driver for me and my customers for this setup is 21.21.13.7586 from 10.11.2016 (thats dd/mm/yyyy). On the latest Intel Drivers (21.20.16.4542 - 15.45 release), be sure to disable PSR - Panel Self Refresh, this also solves the flickering within Windows Shell with hybrid graphics enabled (even on internal monitor). Issue: USB not being recognized after col... I got the expected prompt to ensure I was plugged in. I then watched as the upgraded prompted me to install. Installation completed and everything appeared to be fine.  I powered down the thinkpad and disconnected. Worked from the living room, then went back to the dock. Connected, and noticed that before I connected the White light on the power button was illuminated. Shrugged, and pushed the power button. Nothing. I un-plugged the Dock, got a cup of coffee, returned and plugged it back in. Nothing. I then noticed that none of the pass-through power was working on the dock.  So, I unplugged it again.  Unplugged everything connected to it, and held the power button down for 15 seconds in an effort. All of this at the recommendation of Lenovo Support. Who, by the way, was very nice and well spoken. Nothing we did worked. I happened to have another Thunderbolt 3 cable in my bag, and no change. Issue 1I purchased the ZBook Studio G3 + 2 months wait on the Thunderbolt 3 Dock to primarily connect 2 4K Samsung monitors.  When connected via the display port one will display at 4k while the other will only display @ 2560X1440.  I had bought a a couple of CableMatters thunderbolt 3 X display port adapters while waiting on the dock.  If I plug one of the monitors in using the adapter and the other into the display port both will display 4K.Anybody else having this issue? Issue 2After the computer goes to sleep only one monitor will wake up.  The NVDIA control panel still shows both connected.  Only way to get the second monitor awake is to shutdown and reboot. Issue 3I have the displays configured to go blank after 1 hour.  Once this occurs and I enter my password all of my open programs are displayed on one screen rather than on both.  This would be normal if you have undocked and re-docked a laptop. Issue 4If the laptop is opened while docked. One display goes blank and one is duplicated with the laptop screen.  This is not typical docked behavior.  I moved from an  Elitebook 8540W with dock.  I'm really questioning my whether this was an upgrade.

One laptop tries 3 diffrent docks, USB and Ethernet wont work. Another laptop will randomly BSOD, if the dock is even touched it will BSOD as well. I've gone though all the posts about these issues from last summer but nothing really seems to help. Is there a newer fix that I am missing somewhere? Thanks Josh

I recently (yesterday, 16/08/16) started experiencing the dreaded Blue Screen of Death whenever my laptop is connected to my HP Elite Thunderbolt 3 Dock. The machine is a HP ZBook 15 G3. It has been connected to this dock for over a month without this issue. I'm not sure why the sudden issue as I don't recall any updates or new software prior to this happening. The dock is connected to 2x monitors via HDMI cables, and an ethernet cable. I connect a wireless mouse and keyboard to a USB3 port on the laptop. If the dock is connected to the laptop on startup, it reaches the login screen before BSOD. If I start without it connected, it will BSOD a few seconds after connecting the dock. It never gets to the point where the monitors display anything. It can boot with the dock connected in Safe Mode, as this seems to disable it from working. I have updated all drivers and the BIOS (including downloading the Softpaq Download Manager) but there has been no change. I've also updated the NVIDIA drivers to the latest version without change. What should I do next to solve the issue?

A:BSOD upon connection to HP Elite Thunderbolt 3 Dock

I would personally try isolating the culprit, then go from there: 1) remove 1 monitor from the dock, then test2) remove ethernet from the dock, then test3) remove the last monitor and hook it directly to the laptop, so the dock is attached with nothing to it, then test4) I have my dock set to "Always Connect" in the thunderbolt software, not sure if that helps any.

I just got a new Carbon X1 6th generation (20KG).  I started using this with my Thunderbolt 3 dock (40AC), that I successfully used with my previous Carbon X1 5th Generation. There seems to be some compatibility issues here. After using it with the docking a while (apprx. 1 hour), the X1 suddenly started to continuously disconnect/reconnect from the dock (each 2-3 seconds), before it permanently was disconnected from the docking and would not connect at all.  When I disconnected the X1 from the dock and restarted (without connecting to dock) the X1 Thunderbolt software and devices/drivers related to that on the X1 "went crazy" and appeared/disappeared from the device manager continuously (each 2-3 seconds). I needed to enter bios and temporarily disable internal battery for it to normalize again. If I then connected to dock, the same would happen after some time. I've updated Thunderbolt software, drivers, firmware and also Thunderbolt 3 dock firmware and drivers, so no more to do there. I have not verified it completely yet, but it might be that the disconnect/crazy_stuff happens when the battery charge of the X1 reaches 100%. I once connected the X1 to the dock when the charge was 97% and it was stable then (the X1 does not charge on AC when the battery is > 95%). If this is the reason, one solution might then be to use Lenovo Vantage to set max charge to e.g. 97%, but I think this is a poor solution. Some ... Read more

We received a new 5510 laptop that works great on its own, but when adding in the thunderbolt dock we experience odd issues

1. If the laptop lid is closed while connected to thunderbolt, the laptop will hang at the Dell bios screen.  If the lid is open while power turned on, the laptop boots up fine.  However, the BIOS screen is still not visible on the external monitors, only when the OS has loaded
2. Dell shipped a new dock which had no differnce, and then I uninstalled every single driver and downloaded/installed in order from Dell's website, including updated Thunderbolt firmware and BIOs

The laptop is running Windows 10 x64

2 things I have noticed:
1. In device manager, the Thunderbolt Controller 1575 is hidden.  Viewing hidden devices and opening this controller states:
"Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer (Code 45)"  The resources tab states that there is a problem with the device
Of course, reconnecting makes no difference.  I have also unplugged all peripherals from the dock to make sure there was not a conflict
Second, in device manager, there is no listing (visible or invisible) for  ASMedia USB 3.0 Extended Host Controller Driver for Dell Thunderbolt Dock, regardless of uninstalling it through Add/Remove Programs and re-installing.
One more note - I am able to work normally after booting with the lid open successfully and then closing the lid.

A:Precision 5510 issues with Thunderbolt dock

I have the exact same symptoms with the same hardware (precision 5510 & WD15). the computer will not POST when it is either started or restarted with the built-in display closed. If the lid is open... all is fine. Ohh.. and when you do try to start/restart with the lid closed, i get a 2 orange, 7 white blink code. it will continue to repeat this until I open the lid and press the power button. This will then cause the unit to successfully POST and boot up.
I'm running Windows 8.1, and have installed all available dell updates as of March 28th, 2016

Hi all, I do tech support at a university that uses various Lenovo notebooks across campus. I have noticed a trend among the users that have a Thinkpad Yoga 370 Notebook and are using a Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock, myself included. Occasionally (every few weeks or so), one of the affected systems will show "plugged in, not charging" tooltip when hovering over the battery tray icon. When this happens, the charge indicator light by the charging port and Thunderbolt port does not turn on, the battery continues to drain, and unplugging the Thunderbolt cable and either plugging it (or the regular power cable) back into the notebook has no effect. I've been experiencing general stability issues with the ThunderBolt 3 dock. I purchased Extreme X1 for work because of the impressive specs and portability of the device. Overall I've been very pleased with the performance and build quality of the device and Lenovo's software suite makes keeping everything up to date really easy. WIth that said, I've had LOTS of issues with general stability of this product. It appears to Lenovo had issues with the discrete graphics (Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050 ti) which may have mostly been resolved with the latest update. I'm on a fairly recent version of Windows 10 (1803). When using the Thunderbolt 3 dock I still experience lots of issues where the device freezes or becomes unresponsive when docking or undocking. Often times I must force power off the device completely because the device is unable to wake from sleep correctly when docked. I have not tested whether device itself is unable to wake from sleep or if it's just because it is connected from the Dock. However sometimes the device WILL wake correctly but then certain functions will not work, notable USB data will not work often but will be powered (keyboard lights are on but can't use caps lock, for example). Or sometimes the VIDEO won't display at all (thunder bolt graphics issue with discrete GPU) however I can clearly see caps lock works on my keyboard. Note all mentions of keyboard here refer to a USB keyboard wired to the TB dock.  Also worth noting ofte... Read more

We purchased a new X1 Carbon 6th Gen with the new Thunderbolt 3 Dock Win 10 1803 and have had all kinds of problems. Bad enough to consider other brand alternatives. All Lenovo drivers are current, we updated the firmware and drivers for the dock. With that we still have the following problems and dont know how to resolve them1. The network connectivity from the dock to laptop with USB-C loses connectivity on occasion. Also when the user shuts off the laptop, comes back and turns the laptop on, no network connectivity is re-established. The only way to fix this is to unplug the USB-C cable and plug it back in. Sometimes that will lock up windows and we have to do a hard shut down and start of the laptop. 2. Running the display out from the dock is not always reliable. The monitor will turn off randomly. To bypass this issue we have to just plug the monitor directly into the laptop. 4. Occasional random bluescreens with a stop  code DRIVER_VERIFIER_DMA_VIOLATION. This error is related to bad drivers. Are we missing something. Is there anything we have to set in the BIOS to resolve these problems? I've been reading up on this dock and a lot of people are having problems with this dock and carbon 6th gen laptops

We have a Dell Precision 5520 that uses a TB16 docking station that all of a sudden is having difficulties connecting to our VPN. It was fine earlier in the day. We tried clearing the DNS cache and tried a winsock reset. THe drivers are up to date and everything.
Also tried to reboot the computer multiple times.
Even tried a K17A Dock and had the same issue.
We were finally able to get the computer to connect to the vpn once we used a usb net adapter to plug the ethernet cable into.
Tried plugging the usb adapter into the computer directly and into the dock. It worked whether it was directly connected to the computer or the dock.
It only does not work when we connect the ethernet cable to into the lan port on the TB16 and K17A dock. And only for the one computer.

At a loss, any ideas?

Hi, I'm using the new ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock which came out with the P52 with my P1. So far it almost works fine when you boot up, but whenever I disconnect the machine from it after sending it to sleep or hibernation (like overnight)  and plug it in the other day the mouse and keyboard are not detected.I need to reboot the laptop to use them again with the dock. Thats really annoying. I thought it might be a driver issue but after updating to the newsest drivers from lenovo the problem persists. Has anybody a solution for that? Of course all other updates from Lenovo side are in  place..and I'm still using windows 10 1803.the mouse is a razer deathadder and the keyboard a Filco majestouch 2.Is that the typical glitch of a new product we always have to face as beta testers :-) Merci A

Found this, there is a new utility you need to install when you use the new dock. its called:   but still when you put the laptop into sleep mode, and it wakes up the connection for LAN , Mouse and Keyboard are gone. you need to reboot. Pls fix this Lenovo, very annoying for such an expensive kit...

When my Z Book is docked and the lid closed, I cannot get it to boot because the machine stops at the BitLocker screen, waiting for my code entry. Unfortunately, the docking station hasn't been activated yet, so both the display and keyboard are "dead".The only work-around is to plug an external keyboard directly into the notebook - and then "blind-type" my BitLocker code. Once the machine boots, everything is the way it should be.This is a clumsy way to do things - can't we get some sort of boot option to send the video to an external monitor and activate the dock? If the dock has a MAC address, maybe it could be locked to the tpm in this fashion?BTW - all drivers and firmwares are up-to-date.

My office just upgrated to the the Zbooks with thunderbolt docking stations. Most of us have 2 monitors. Those of us with LG monitors can not connect both monitors using the Display ports or it locks up the docking station or notebook. If we connect one in the display port and one with VGA it will work. But the one in the display port drops from 1680X1050 to 1600 X 900. The one connected with VGA will have 1680 X 1050. Notebook will not let us put the display port any higher than 1600 X 900. This are the same monitors. On the old notebooks we had this was not a problem. Both were being run at 1680 X 1050. Please someone tell me what I need to do to get this to work. On the filp side some people have Bell monitors and this is not a problem with them. It is only with the LG monitors that we have this problem. The LGs are 2 years old.  The dells are over 5 years old.

For the Zbook G3 series, is HP going to support external GPU enclosures via Thunderbolt 3?  I believe it requires support at the firmware (UEFI) level along with driver support for maximum compatibility.

Most of the time when i boot up in the morning it flickers between my laptop screen and my external two monitors then just stops working completely. All my software and firmware are up to date. Is there anything else i have missed and/or is there a fix for this?

Hi Benire,First let us go through all the steps of setting up the dock. You might have already performed these, so they are more like questions to see if we can get to a resolution of the problem. Here is a guide I am following:https://static.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/265658.pdf Here iss where I am looking at the drivers for your PC:http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=8693774&swLangOid=8&swEnvOid=4192 I see BIOS from (7 nov. 2016)2 Firmware updates for dock and thunderboltIntel thunderbolt secure connect ( 18 july 2016)   uninstall older version first if this version is newerGraphics drivers for your graphics cardsAudio driver for docksASMedia eXtensible Host Controller (xHCI) Driver (1 feb. 2017)ethernet driversHP Elite USB-C Docking Station Driver (American, International) Here i see a couple of firmware updates for docking station which are not in the list above:http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-zbook-dock-with-thunderbolt-3/11122586 I would try to update all other drivers on your laptop, you can see the devices in device manager if you are not sure of the exact device on your PC (such as network) Let me know,David

I have a catastophic and destructive issue with the internal Thunderbolt socket/drivers in this Zbook. I have an 8TB GRaid Thunderbolt drive which not only is very rarely recgnised by the laptop when I switch it on, it drops out of connection mid-usage and locks up the entire File Explorer system causing a very long Windows lock, crash and then won't even shut down. I cannot replace the Thuderbolt drivers as I get an error message.  Has anyone else experienced communication difficulties like this with Thunderbolt on the ZBook 15 G3 2.4i7?

My company is looking to replace its aging fleet of HPs. We have narrowed the field to a Dell model or the HP SB ZBook 17 G2. The decision will likely depend on if the ZBook will fit our existing 230w Docks (P/N VB043UT). The dock looks almost identical to the two HP 230w Docking Stations listed as accessories: A7E34UT and A7E34AA...not sure what the difference is. The pages are exactly identical except the price. Perhaps an exercise in suckering people? More expensive is always better even when the things are identical.

A:Will the ZBook 17 G2 fit this dock?

Hi, No, they are not the same and can't be identical. Please read their specs carefully thet why the newer one is more expensive. Newer one:       http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetPDF.aspx%2Fc04164466.pdf older one:     https://h10057.www1.hp.com/ecomcat/hpcatalog/specs/provisioner/99/VB043UT.htm You may be able to use the older one but not recommended, it may fit physically but you can't get all connectivities. Regards.
