Thinkpad 770 keyboard will not work

Q: Thinkpad 770 keyboard will not work

Ok here's the story... I borrowed a semi broken thinkpad from a friend... monitor is cracked and most of the keys don't work... so when I got it I used a external keyboard.. no problem... with a splitter for the mouse... no problem... It has windows 2000 pro. I personally use windows 98 so I was trying to get my scroll mouse to work so I loaded the software for that mouse... big mistake..... after that No mouse or keyboard worked.... I eventually tried another mouse that goes through the parallel port... ah that works... still no keyboard... I unistalled the mouse and keyboard many times... with no luck... my next thought was the com port so I uninstalled that.... nope still no keyboard.. even the few keys from the laptop that did work before do not..nor the laptops own mouse. So I hope I said it all... except because this is borrowed I don't have the discs.... so what else? Joel

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Means that a USB connected keyboard or mouse is not usable. I can resolve the issue by unplug&plug-in the 65W power supply cable. Why are keyboard/mouse/headphones not instantly working when switching on the dock? Is there a special setting necessary? Thx!

I was having responsiveness issues with the trackpad for a while, then, i open my laptop one day and it's completely unresponsive, as well has the backlit keyboard not working (the hotkey still pops up that it's "lighting up" the keyboard, but no actual lights) and the trackpoint being completely unresponsive too. I've tried:- Restarting computer- Using Lenovo's various "fixing" softwares- Looking for a keyboard firmware shortcut for enabling/disabling trackpad, (doesn't exist on this computer)- Re installing drivers (Ultranav driver refuses to install manually, "driver installation failed")- Booting on a non microsoft OS (Booted on a linux Mint installation and it still doesn't work)- Booting into BIOS and looking for "enable/disable trackpad option", That option does not exist for me.- Opening up computer and checking the physical connection, All plugged in fine. When i open the device manager in windows there is no entry for the mouse whatsoever. The touch screen and the pen both work fine. I think it all points towards a hardware issue, i can pick up another trackpad on ebay for pretty cheap, but obviously i'd like to make sure that it would actually solve the issues.  The major confusion for me is that why would faulty trackpad hardware stop the backlit keyboard from lighting up? How are the two linked? Any ideas appreciated, Thanks!

Hi, I have a Lenovo Flex 2 14 which came with a British keyboard but I noticed you can take off the keyboard and swap it out for another one - you can find backlit versions, or a version with a different layout. I got a keyboard for it with Japanese hiragana on it, but the laptop doesn't seem to recognise any of the extra keys this keyboard comes with which have key codes not used by other languages. These keys include: | -? \ ??????the ????, ???? and ???? toggleI would have assumed this was to do with the fact that these are keys from a 106/109 key layout as opposed to the standard 102 key, so I replaced the keyboard driver with Microsoft's 106/109 key keyboard driver, but that hasn't had any effect - it still can't see these keys being pressed. The ??/?? ?? key works because it uses the same key code as the tilde on other keyboards, but that's all. My hypothesis for why this might not be possible to fix is that the ribbon connection between the keyboard and the motherboard could only support 102-key layouts in Europe, and therefore the only way to be able to use these extra input conversion keys without a different motherboard altogether would be to use an external USB keyboard. I may have just made up what I said about the motherboard though, so does anyone know if there's a driver I can use to solve this problem and be able to use the extra keys? I can't just use a key mapper like KeyTweak ... Hey,

I am pretty desperate now as I recently got a new Lenovo z500 ideapad laptop, which i think its 9 months old only.

All of the sudden, one day the shift key started to automatically been pressed down.. as if its like its being 'possessed' in simple terms.. and it happened at random times

After much forums, some say hold shift key down for 10 secs or x amount of secs, disable sticky keys, filter keys, bounce keys, or even continue press shift keys continuously etc etc..

Did all those, disabled sticky keys, bounch keys, filter keys and now whenever i on my comp, the shift key will automatically be pressed down, so i have to hold the shift key for like 5-8secs to disable it, than it works fine and no more occurence.

However, a new problem occurs.. now certain keys on the laptop is not working like the right shift key.. when the right shift key is pressed down, none of the letters are being capital or none of the symbols are showing BUT the left shift key does the job..

Than, the left shift key could not caps the letter z, t, y, m, and a few more.. but it works prefectly fine with other keys.. Now i am pretty sure its not a keyboard malfunction because without pressing caps, all the keys are fine but only these certain keys wont be caps when the left shift key is pressed..

So i decided to use an external keyboard and everything works out fine.. right shift key is working, left shift key caps those letters which could not be cap... Read more

The fact that a USB keyboard works fine when your built in one doesn't, proves that it is the keyboard itself (or connectors) that is damaged/defective, otherwise, if it were a software problem, the external keyboard would do the same.

For the past two days I have not been able to use my keyboard on my U510 unless I plug in a USB Keyboard & also pushing & holding down ctrl+alt+del to type all of the characters I want. If this is not done only the Caps Lock, the Spacebar, Enter & the letter I works. Once I go through the USB keyboard setup I can take out the keyboard & use the keyboard on my laptop but my volume turns down on it's own. Does anyone know if there is a BIOS update I can put on a Flash Drive? The laptop came with Windows 8 but I went down to 7 then went up to Windows 10. If I were to try to go to the BIOS I get no response because of the keyboard not responding. Can someone please help me with this problem.

I was just given a Thinkpad 390. It was having problems booting past the bio screen. Eventually, after trying to enter bios and no luck, I tried hooking up the keyboard from my tower. The keyboard worked in the thinkpad, but I found that the only way the laptop will boot up is if the keyboard is plugged in. Then, once in windows (2000) the laptop keyboard still wont work, whether the tower keyboard is plugged in or not. I have no idea if anything was spilled on the machine or not. Does anyone know how to get into the keyboard to make sure its plugged into the board correctly?? I unscrewed the screws, but its not as easy as that though. Any ideas? Thanks

my laptop keyboard is not working right. first the specs. ibm thinkpad T42, machine type 2378, model R4U, OS xp-pro coa sp2, 512mb ram. my cpu usage jumps up and down between 40 to 100% when running my spy sweeper, fire fox isp and a voice chat program. when i am not running any programs except whats need for the laptop to work the cpu usage is 3 to 10%. and i have available ram. OK now with the problem. when i try to type on the keyboard the letters or numbers don't show up. but if i hold the keys down it will show up there is a delay of about 2 seconds. if i just push down the keys at normal speed it wont show up. it will only show up if i hold it down for about 2 seconds. i thought the keyboard was bad so i bought a new one from the factory. i installed it but it is still doing the same thing. just to let you know every thing else about the computer works great and and all my programs do not have any lag. its only the problem with keyboard delay. i will just add this i have cleaned up the computer, defragged, ran spy ware and anti virus and it has been working fine for years without any problems.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad
Model : E431 (Edge Series) Number: 62774UQ
(3rd Gen Ci5/ 4GB/ 500GB 7200rpm HDD/ Windows 10)

I purchase this in 2013. It has been used moderately over the first 2/ 2 1/2 years
The laptop was idle for the past 6 months.
After I recharged the laptop, I noticed that some keys began to malfunction. So I installed Windows 10 (Windows 7 previously). However the problem persisted.
The shift key seems to be pressed as per its own wish and the sticky keys notifications comes up on its own. The Enter key sometimes works, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes on its own. The backspace key also does not function sometimes.
I then opened up the laptop and removed the keyboard from the laptop and then replugged it back in hoping it would make a difference, but it didn't.
The touchpad also become unresponsive sometimes and I have to press the Windows key twice to make it work again.
What could be the source of the problem? Is it the keyboard or is it the motherboard to blame? Kindly provide a solution.

I bought my P50 in March of 2016. I've been very happy with my purchase overall, the only disappointment has been the low key-rollover property of the built-in keyboard. I am a programmer/game developer, and it is important for me to have a keyboard that supports multiple simultaneous keystrokes. After taking ownership, I found that the keyboard drops strokes with as few as 2 keys already held down, which makes it pretty useless for gaming.  I work around this by plugging in a USB keyboard when I need to test my game projects. At the time I purchased, there was only one option for the keyboard. Today, I was browsing the Lenovo online store, and noticed that there's now an option for a backlit keyboard in addition to the standard non-backlit keyboard.  Under "Help Me Decide" it says: Lenovo has refreshed the keyset on all ThinkPad laptops, outfitting them with the ThinkPad Precision Keyboard. This new keyset allows a more comfortable, fluid and accurate typing experience with it's slate of individually rounded, spacious, and low-set keys. The ThinkPad Precision Keyboard simultaneously delivers a modern look and feel to your ThinkPad.*Select models are available with a backlit keyset as standard, or as an optional upgrade.*Most 15.6" models come standard with full keyboard including dedicated number pad. I am wondering if this refreshed keyboard means a  higher rollover. Hey everyone, Recently bought this laptop. Loving everything about it. However, I did a fresh install of Windows 10 (it wasn't an upgrade from Win8.1, but rather a new install of Win10 after I replaced the harddrive to a 1TB SSD). Since then I've reinstalled everything I could get from the site. Every Lenovo driver set and utility. Updated the BIOS. Consulted the Solution Center. Ran scans from the utilities and the site. I've literally tried EVERYTHING that's obvious, and I can't get the backlight to come on at all. When I first received the laptop with the old harddrive, the backlight worked just fine. Since I put in the new SSD with a fresh install, I cannot for the life of me get it to turn on. Pressing Fn+SPACE gets it to show the little icon on screen that it's SUPPOSED to be turned on, but it isn't on. So I'm at a loss here. I sincerely doubt it's a hardware issue, because literally the only thing that's changed is the harddrive. If there's a specific driver for the keyboard backlight, I'd love to know about it. Thanks in advance!

Hi. welcome to the forum.

Do you want to try out something just to check that the keyboard light is working?
I have a TP Yoga 14 here and when I access the BIOS the keyboard lights up when I press "FN+Space", give it a try if it works for you.

I do not know if it requires an special driver, but I'm using the Windows 10 that was updated over the Win8.1 that came included.

The other things that cames to my mind is trying to boot other OS from the USB and see if the keyboard lights up.

Greetings,I recevently received a Thinkpad 13 intended for small office use.  However, when I inspected the hardware, I discovered a problem at the bottom left corner of the keyboard (pictures below).??As you can see, the corner of the keyboard base is bulging upward.  It very clearly should not be this way, as the other corner is flush with the edge of the chassis (picture below). ??So, I tried to wiggle the corner down into place, but it did no good.  I don't want to have to send it back (I just got it, and need to use it), but I certainly don't want damage or poor quality control to be ignored.Does anyone know if I can fix this myself?  If not, what is the best way to inform Lenovo of this problem?Cheers,

I've noticed this behavior after I've used logitech wireless mouse with usb unified reciever. Is there a way to fix this strange behavior? I've already cleaned contacts on the keyboard connector on the motherboard and cable, but it didn't fix the problem. Also it seems like it is not OS dependet, because it has the same behavior in bios/linux/windows 7 & 10.
