Q: G580 BIOS update - Error 255

I can download the BIOS update here just fine: http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles/62cn97ww_64.exe But when I run it (as an administrator) I get the pop-up message "Error 255 - TDK Library Initialization Failed" and then it quits.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A friend had a malware attack, a beeping error on Chrome about a Windows Defender error running Win 10. She managed to shut down Chrome and then shut off her computer. She tried turn back on, but it would not. I managed to start the computer by removing battery , AC power and the bios battery. The only way to turn on is to remove all of the above and then reinsert bios battery and connect AC power. The keyboard does not work properly, types mostly 6s and a few other characters (ie the shift key types an 's'). No wifi, no CD, no mouse touchpad. I can get into Windows 8, which I restored from factory partiton. Did not affect the operation. I assumed that the bios must have been over written, so I downloaded an update, but it will not install. Program goes through the motions, but the old bios is still there. I am using an external USB KB and mouse. I still can not get into the bios. Is there a way to "force" a bios update?

hello, recently i had to clean install windows 10 32 bit on my laptop (g580-20157) and while installation i found that the bios version is 62CN31WW. i realised that i have never updated the bios to next version. there are two updates which i missed,  62CN44WW for windows 7 and 62CN97WW for windows 8. the problem is, the support page on lenovo asks to downgrade to windows 7 to update bios to 62CN44WW and upgrade to windows 8 to get the 62CN97WW. as it was clean install the windows 7 got deleted from my laptop. is there any solution such that i can avoid downgrading and yet update the bios to latest version?

hi adarsh_savant,

I think you may have concern in this thread,
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-3000-and-Essential/G580-Bios-update-problem/m-p/1199186/highlight...

Here the suggested solution from neokenchi that helped.

1. Boot into the BIOS by repeatedly tapping F2 on startup

2. In the BIOS, navigate to the Boot Tab and set UEFI to Disabled or Legacy then press F10 to save and exit. When
the computer reboots, check if you still get the errors and/or if you're able to boot into Windows.

3. If same problem, leave the changes that you made on Step 2 and attempt to re-install Windows via a Windows 8 recovery drive or OneKey Recovery button (note that this will wipe the computer to factory settings)

Hope this helps,
Cheers!

It took about 6 hours and a bunch of Russian-language websites to solve this one. This is for people who have spent hours and hours trying to bring their dead or bricked Lenovos back to life after a failed BIOS update. 1. Get on a working computer and forget everything you read about making a bootable USB with Crisis tool, you don't need one. 2. Format your USB (16GB or smaller) to FAT32. 3. Download the latest BIOS from the Lenovo website. Currently that link is here:https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/gb/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-g-series-laptops/lenovo-g580... 4. Now we're going to need to open Command Prompt. Hold Windows key+R, type "cmd", click OK. 5. Type without quotes in the box "cd C:\Users\<Your user folder name>\Downloads" and press Enter key 6. Then type without quotes "62cn97ww_32.exe /ext" and press enter (If your file has a different name, adjust accordingly) 7. You'll see about 4 files appear. The one you want will be called "62cn97ww_32.cap". Rename the .cap file to "BIOS.cap" and copy this file to your formatted USB stick. 8. Make sure your dead laptop is switched off. Plug in your USB stick into a USB 2.0 port (NOT the USB 3.0 ports). Hold down Fn+R, then while holding press the power key and keep it held down untiil something happens. If successful, your laptop screen will light up, a DOS screen will appear and the BIOS will flash itself. If it doesn't work, the laptop will immediately switch ... Read more

So I bought a new CPU for my old G580 laptop. I wanted to upgrade from the B960 it has right now (it's the 20150 model). The new CPU is a i5-3320M as it's listed as a compatible part on both the downloadable PDF and the PartsLookup website (I checked with my serial number as well). I changed the CPU, installed thermal paste, everything, but to no avail. Won't even enter BIOS. The "on" LED flashes for 10 seconds, then it shuts down. Installed the old CPU again - it boots without problems. New CPU again - no BIOS, nothing. I have updated my BIOS to the latest possible version (version 5ECN96WW (V9.01), as the newer version shows a "Error 255 - TDK Library Initialization Failed". I just don't know what to do anymore. Could be a faulty CPU, but I doubt it. The only difference is that the old CPU is Sandy Bridge, and the new is Ivy Bridge. But it's shown as "compatible" with the laptop everywhere. It's a shame really...

Hey there, I've got a problem with my new G580 2698.After installing Win7, I can't access BIOS. When I'm pressing F2, nothing happens - I even tried all those other fancy things like pressing/holding B and many other ways. I simply can't. There's no "Please wait" or anything. OneKey Rescue System boots system normally into Win7. Also there's no "setup" entry or anything other than Diagnostic Splash in the F12-boot menu's "Apps"-section. This is bad because it hinders me to boot anything in UEFI-mode. Everything else kinda works (got a running Win7 machine). Is there a way to reflash the BIOS? It's the 62CN42WW one. Maybe that will solve my problem? Also any other hints are welcome. Thank you and good dayAstfgl_

I have a G580 running windows 10 and I'm getting an error message when trying to start. It says unmounted boot volume, and then restarts.  I'm trying to acces the bios so I can boot from a USB or DVD, but it won't let me access it because of the fast start.  However the computer won't fully start for me to disable the fast start, so I'm at a total loss for what to do.  I tried the novo button but it's just sending me to the normal boot screen.  Where it says the same thing.  Thanks so much for the help!!!

Hi  I'm using Arch Linux with the latest stable linux kernel from kernel.org (4.12.8) on my G580. During the boot process, the kernel provides the following messages:[ 0.738821] pci 0000:00:14.0: xHCI BIOS handoff failed (BIOS bug ?) 00010001[ 2.436936] pci 0000:00:1a.0: EHCI: BIOS handoff failed (BIOS bug?) 01010001[ 4.103660] pci 0000:00:1d.0: EHCI: BIOS handoff failed (BIOS bug?) 01010001 The messages appear whether booting in UEFI or BIOS mode. My understanding is that the linux kernel follows industry standards in how it takes host controller ownership from the BIOS. Hello, The Problem:Recently I installed Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS  to my HDD in UEFI mode. Soon I found out that I could not access the BIOS using F2, but F12 allowed selection of boot device. Reinstalling Windows, I found out that the boot menu still had the Ubuntu entry and I still could not access the BIOS. I searched on the web for a solution and before I could manage to find a proper one, I managed to delete both the ubuntu and windows boot manager boot entries, still locked out of bios. This time I could not boot into any OS, could not access bios using f2 nor access boot menu using f12.  The Solution:There was one last hope, during boot I noticed that PXE (Boot via ethernet option was still showing).Note: This solution requires you to update the BIOS. This is a very risky procedure, so proceed with caution. This will also probably void your warranty. If you can access boot menu (F12) and want to regain access to the BIOS (F2), boot into Windows 7. Install a bios update for your laptop (specifically for your laptop) available at The Lenovo Support Site. The oldest BIOS (probably for Windows 7) is preffered. If you donot have access to windows 7, perform step 2 and boot into the created ISO by creating a bootable CD or pendrive. Then goto step 11.If you can't access F12 and F2, cannot boot into OS, but can boot via Ethernet (there should be a message about trying Atheros Ethernet PXE Boot during startup), start from step 1. My rule of thumb with BIOS updates is "if it is not broke, do not try to fix it" because there is always an inherent risk that a BIOS update can fail, and if so, leave  the system bricked (dead) requirnig a new motherboard, and there does not appear to be anything in the latest updates readme.txt other than specific fixes for Windows 8.1... Hello Everyone, Its a much discussed yet embarassing problem. I have a G580 with intel i3 processor. The machine is quite old (5 years i think) and has been subject to various OS upgrades, changes, flashes, dual boots systems like ubuntu & windows. Recently to upgrade the machine i bought an i7 processor (yes it is compatible, i checked the hardware manuals). Once installed  the display wont come on, i figured i needed a BIOS update. Thats where the terrible stuff started. I tried using the BIOS update tool downloaded from the official lenovo website with windows 10. As soon as i launched it, the command prompt like window opened and my computer froze. That happned a few times. Figuring, it might resolve itself I left it alone for 3 hours but it was still frozen. Also figuring that the tool is for windows 7 i ran it on compatibility mode. Still the same result. I read on some forum a guy had the same issue and it was resolved by reverting to windows 7. So i bought a new copy of windows 7 (yes i really want that i7 processor). Installed it and tried to run the tool. Still, it froze the minute the window opened (another 3 hour gesticulation time was given to he machine to unfreeze itself but in vain). So i tried to access the bios to see if there was a supervisor password preventing me from entering. Thats when i discovered that i could nnot access the bios at all. Ive attached some screenshots in the end to explain. Startup... Read more

Hello,I've a Lenovo G580 Laptop (2nd Gen PDC B960, 2 GB, 500 GB, DOS) When I bought it came pre-installed DOS, and then I install Windows 7 ultimate (32-bit, i didn't know at that time, 2nd gen PDC are 64-bit). My friend recommend me to disable UEFI from boot setup before installing any non-genuine OS, so I did disable that. My laptop is working fine, but all of a sudden it started to do random mouse freezes, surprisingly pressing ALT+F4 works like a charm to make mouse work again (by mouse I mean pointer actually, I'm using Touchpad, i don't think its a h/w related issue)I think may be it's because any virus/malware or whatever that was, and also I was planning to change my OS to Windows 8 (it's after 10-11 month of purchase date), so I decided to format anyway, instead messing up with mouse freeze problem. Now strange thing happen at this point -I'm not able to start my BIOS setup, nor able to use quick boot option (to select various bootable device option from list)I try to press recovery key (small button near power button), that open recovery module properly (no glitch/error).but unfortunately I don't have any backup made previously so no use of recovery module.and then I restart my laptop, then I press F2, it shows the first screen of BIOS menu, but my system stuck there (unresponsive state), i've no option else directly turning it off by holding power key for few seconds,..and then no boot menu F2, F12 still unresponsive.means whenever i open recovery module it able to ... I?m sorry to hear that G580 is not entering the BIOS menu and hanging at BIOS menu it at all it enters it, performing flee power should resolve the issue; below are is the step to perform Flee Power.

Remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer. Hold the power button for 10 seconds and then connect only the AC Adapter and try to turn ON the computer and enter BIOS menu.
If the issue persists even after performing Flee Power, I would Strongly Suggest Calling Technical Support for Assistance this is the only available option to get this query resolved, Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number, I?m sure they will be a great help.

I've tried many times to install the latest critical BIOS update, using Lenovo System Update, and every time it attempts to, it fails after telling me in a popup that I need to turn the system off and make sure I have a fully charged battery. I rarely rely on battery power and use AC primarily, and I used Power Manager twice to do a full reset, just in case. I can't believe I would need to buy a new battery in order to install it, because the battery works just fine. I'm running Windows 7 (64-bit), and exhausted every other update or option, unless there's something else I'm not aware of. Is it just the software toying with me?

Hi

I got a new Lenovo G580 laptop which did not come with any pre-installed OS. I installed Ubuntu in UEFI mode (I had not disabled UEFI/Secure Boot). Later I installed Windows 7. During installation it asked me to format the entire format as it did not recognize the GPT partition. Accordingly without thinking twice I erased the entire HDD and installed Windows 7. Now I am unable to enter into BIOS

Things I have tried:
Tried with F2, F1 and Delete keys while booting
Tried removing the battery and booting while pressing the above keys individually
Tried removing the battery and adapter, held the power button for 1 minute
Tried removing the battery and held the power button for 1 minute while the adapter was plugged in
Tried pressing F12 and going to the APP MENU but I can only see "Diagnostic Splash" Nothing else and in that diagnostic splash screen I see that the System BIOS is "shadowed"
How can i gain access to BIOS so I can disable UEFI and install Win 7 and Ubuntu side by side

Just got the new Spectre x360 with i7 Kaby Lake processor.  I like most everything about it, but it gets hot in the upper left hand corner, and the temps are in the 80-90 range during normal load.  Researched possible solutions, and one common solution seems to be making sure the Bios is updated. HP Assistant coincidentally popped in a message about an updated Bios available.  Perfect timing, so I thought.  Bios update downloaded ok, but during installation, I got the error message c2-Error: Region is write protected.   Thoughts on how to update the Bios?  I know that one of the recommendations is not to update the  Bios unless something is not working.  Everything seems to be working fine, but I'm thinking I should update he Bios anyway to see if it solves the heat problem.  Thoughts on that? Thanks.

Idiapad 120s, win 10. I'm trying to update BIOS but it gives an error.BIOS settings have been reset. In fact, the original problem is in the non-working Fn button. The drivers and utilities are installed. Update BIOS was the last hope.

Hi everyone,I am pretty new to this, so hopefully I'm doing things right.I have a G580 laptop which was bought part-used and is about 9 months old. It had Windows 8 pre-loaded when I bought it. Then when I downloaded the Windows 8.1 update it also downloaded Microsoft 2010 - I don't even know what version was on the laptop prior to the update. However, when I have tried to open Microsoft 2010 it asked for the Product Key, which we don't have. I am sure that the laptop has all legitimate software loaded, but we don't have any disks etc.Is there a legal/appropriate way to resolve this, otherwise we can't use Word etc at the moment. I woud have thought that checks would have been made at the time of the update to verify that the laptop had a legitimate software licence, but this doesn't appear to be how it works, ie why would it download and remove what was already there?!As you can probably tell from the question, I am pretty much a novice at these things, but hopefully someone can help. Please try to help if you can. Many thanks for your help. Grace

A:G580 Windows 8.1 update has now loaded Microsoft 2010 and I don't have the product key

I called Lenovo today and was told, in no uncertain terms, that I must PURCHASE a recovery disk to get the key for Windows 8. The price was $69.99. Since the laptop came with Windows preinstalled, Lenovo will not give the Windows key. My harddrive crashed and had to be replaced. I was running Windows 10 at the time. Lenovo would not help me in any way since my laptop was out of warrenty. Microsoft gave me a Windows 10 .iso file so I could boot and use the computer. Microsoft told me in order to download the complete Windows 10 OS I would need the product key from Lenovo. Microsoft said I should insist. I did insist, but to no avail. I told the tech person on the phone that I have 3 Lenovo products in my home and his answer would determine whether or not I ever purchase another one. I am moving up the chain of command to get the Windows key and will let you know of my progress.

Recently I got into the device manager while doing some changes and found that the lenovo firmware had an error, saying that it cannot start. I rolled back the driver to the microsoft driver, which works fine now. I went and downloaded the update for my notebook and started to install. I started, clicked yes that i was sure for the laptop model, and got an error. Error states "Runtime Error (at1:708): Out of string range." I did some googling but nothing like this. I tried redownloading the program and received the same problem. Any ideas what could be causing this / how to fix this? Currently running Windows 10 x64, the notebook is a Lenovo Edge 2 1580.

HELP! having trouble since updating my Mainboard bios...:-(

ASUS P4S800D

hadn't updated the bios since initial install from MB CD. (Bios version 1005.002)
Went to main ASUS site and downloaded update 1011, but ever since then PC is wieding out! now when press shutdown, hybenate etc. it restarts...tried to rollback to older bios but have same problem

also the CD Rom and DVD rom are not responding anymore (unless I go to their properties and press "populate"?)

Any help...much appreciated!!

A:Bios update error

Welcome to Techspot!
It sounds like your machine was fine before the Flash, if this true, you have just learned Rule # 1 about updating.
If it ain't broke don't fix it.Generally Flashing rom files is very touchy business, and those updates are for specific problems. If you are not experiencing those specific problems you really should not do it.
Have you tried to Clear your CMOS ?
How many update files are availible between the file you had and the file you updated to?
If there is at least 1 file in this group, I would try it.
Also, if your bios is recognizing the Rom drives properly. Then just uninstall the drives in device Manager and reboot , this will force Windows to reinstall them properly.

X1 Carbon (3460) windows 10 (64bit).Today ran BIOS update as I have done many times before.     But at the end of this after screen saying update successful it doesn't reboot just goes off.    After a few mins I power up to be greeted with splash screen then long beep "fan error!" Warning then off.       I have tried re-setting but no luck.     It seems like extreme coincidence that fan fails immediately after bios update!   More likely fan doesn't like new bios (I don't hear it spinning up).     How do I go back to old BIOS on a pc pc t won't let me boot up?   Thanks
