Touchpad temporarily freezes when laptop keyboard pressed.

Q: Touchpad temporarily freezes when laptop keyboard pressed.

I have no idea how to fix this. Every time I press a button on the keyboard, my mouse freezes for a second or so. When I hold a button, the mouse won't move until a second after I let go. This is really annoying, because if I try to run any games like SRB2, I can't walk and look at the same time. I didn't put this in the Gaming forum, because it also affects outside of games too.

Is there any way I can fix this? I'll give information if asked.

Preferred Solution: Touchpad temporarily freezes when laptop keyboard pressed.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a recurring problem: many times, on a daily basis, usually after opening the lid of my laptop or turning the computer on after hibernate/sleep, the built-in keyboard and touchpad stops reacting!

This problem started or severed from the time I updated all drivers of the computer (using Driver Booster 3.5).

To reactivate my keyboard/touchpad again I have to hibernate the reopen the computer.

are you sure the keyboard isnt physically damaged and has keys pressed through some kind of liquid spill or hard knock, (hell maybe just wear and tear). Have you tried removing the keyboard from ur laptop, and plugging in an external keyboard?

When watching videos on my lenovo thinkpad t61, the video freezes temporarily if the laptop shakes (i.e. if I am on a bumpy train). Usually the audio continues when the video stops, and then the video will "catch up" such that the video and audio will be in sync. I assume that this is a natural problem - that there is a temporarily pause when the laptop shakes - but I am wondering if this is an especially bad problem with lenovos? Also, is there a term for this, so that when I buy a new laptop, I can know whether the new laptop is particularly susceptible to this problem?

A:Video freezes temporarily when laptop shakes

It's Lenovo's Active Protection system. It's the airbag protection. You can lower the sensitivity in control panel.  It will learn which vibrations are normal. It parks the head on the hard drive when it senses that it's going to fall.

There's actually a picture of a laptop when you open the program and the picture moves the way you move the laptop. If you shake it, the picture shakes.

I started facing a problem recently with my 3 years old laptop GATEWAY MX6453.
I have looked in the forum, but couldnt find someone with the exact problem.

My laptop suddenly started to freeze (temporarily) when I try to load any application. The freeze time could take 2 to 5 min (while the hard disk led is lit solid). I cannot hear the hard disk sound during this freeze. I could move the mouse but cannot click on anything. It just stops responding for about 5 min before the application loads and works normally.
If am working on the internet for example and need to open the start menu, the same thing happens.

When booting everything goes normal until I see my desktop background (and icons start loading) it freezes again and could take up to 20 minutes to load.

I suspected the hard disk is failing and I ran a scan. (Windows scan from my computer) but found no errors. I scanned for viruses as well - but found nothing.

Is there any way I could make sure its the hard disk or something else?

Please let me know what other information you may need.

Many thanks

I am super going bananas from my Dell Inspiron 700m. I think it may be my fault as I will soon explain but let's first get to the problem. I am extremely tempted to throw it against the wall at times. The touchpad mouse and keyboard freezes simultaneously right in the middle of either playing a game or just using the computer for other non-game activities.

The mouse will freeze and I won't be able to type anything at all for a period of a few minutes. When the mouse works again, it may behave erratically for a few seconds and then start functioning again normally. The keyboard freezes and will behave normally once the mouse works again; but, if I touch either before the keyboard returns, then it may cause the keyboard to behave erratic and remain that way forcing me to restart the computer.

As I stated before, I believe it may be my fault. I have tons of music files on my computer and my hard drive is nearly tapped for space. I'm praying it's not a hardware problem b/c I don't have the money to get it repaired. I am a single mom with a very expensive son and can't afford any alternatives. I hope someone can help me find a solution to the problem within reason.

Hi um... My notebook HP pavillion was working fine this morning, but when I came home two hours later my computer stopped functioning correctly. Before I left, I downloaded a program called Digsby that I had never used before and then left. When I came back my computer wouldn't stop "ding"ing and was spewing random letters and numbers. Alarmed, I forced shut off my computer. At the part where the computer asked me if I wanted to go into safe mode or start up correctly, I couldn't move anything, go up, or even press enter, so I had to wait before it loaded. After it'd load up, my touchpad wouldn't respond and I had to use an external mouse. Then I discovered that when typing, I also could not use the key Caps Lock, or else my whole keyboard freezes up. At that time, any keys would not function, including strangly the sound system in the computer. I've tried to use system restore to go back to an earlier time but that didn't help with anything at all. I ran Webroot Antivirus Spysweeper to no avial. Not until after I went back to the earliest time that I could and ran Webroot again did it find anything. But even after the virus got caught nothing still worked.

As the subject says I can't use the keyboard and mouse at the same time. I have tried disabling Smart sense in the Symantecs click pad settings by moving the slider all the eway to the left but this has not resolved it. I have also went into the mouse and touchpad settings and set to no delay but this also has not resolved my issue. I have the latest drivers (19.2.11.38)  installed. Is there another setting that I am missing?

A:Touchpad not working when keys pressed

Hi, Normally, you just need to turn off SmartSense or PalmCheck the Synaptics control panel - however from what I've seen, this no longer seems to work for Windows 10 versions of this driver. You may be able to get around this as follows. First, download the Synaptics driver on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder. Synaptics Driver Version 17.0.18.8 Turn off your wireless card ( should be f12 ). Open windows control panel, open Programs and Features, right click the current Synaptics driver and select Uninstall. When complete, restart the notebook. When windows has reloaded, open your Downloads folder and run the Synaptics installer - when this has completed, restart the notebook again. Open the Synaptics settings panel, disable SmartSense or PalmCheck and then check if the touchpad will now work with a keyboard key held down.  If it does, turn your wireless card back on and use the utility on the following link to prevent Windows 10 from automatically updating the Synaptics driver. https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3073930 Regards, DP-K

Disable the internal keyboard temporarily with keyboard shortcut or with a small installation without disabling the external usb or wireless keyboard attached to it for some time until the user wants to turn it back to normal or if he restarts the system. Please provide a solution which does not incluse changing the drivers of the laptop. Some laptops like Asus and Lenovo provide their own hotkeys for doing this. Is there a way of doing it with my HP laptop?

When writing a lot on the keyboard on my T560, I keep getting into situations where the cursor just jumps around wildly and all of a sudden I find myself on a completely different line in the paragraph than where I'd like to be. It's really very annoying and lowers productivity. It's even worse when I find myself in a spreadsheet application such as Excel.  My previous laptop had a button on top of the touchpad that easily allowed me to turn the touchpad on and off, mitigating such problems. Unfortunately, the only way I could find to turn off the touchpad on my T560 is by going through the control panel or to turn it off permanently in the BIOS. That's not at all convenient.  Do you know of some easier way to turn off the touchpad temporarily? A key combination or a tray icon would be my preferred solutions.

I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 that has a vertical and horizontal scrolling option on the touch pad. It worked fine when I got the laptop but now the scrolling doesn't work. The touchpad works, just won't scroll. I must have accidentally changed the settings or something. I've read other postings and tried to go through the control panel but there is no option for a touchpad in my control panel and I can't find anything under mouse properties that I can change to fix this. Also, my keyboard now jumps all over the place. In the middle of typing my cursor jumps to another sentence and starts putting in my letters, how is that happening? That just started, it wasn't doing that before. I've looked through downloads thinking I needed a new driver but you can't tell what is what so who knows what to download! If anyone could help me, please email me at [email protected] as I can't always find this forum. Thanks for your help!

A:Laptop Touchpad and keyboard

I LOVE CSI....except NY.

I have an HP laptop with scroll on the touchpad.

When I go to "Mouse" in Control Panel I see Touchpad functions and an "ALPS" logo. I assume that is because of the touchpad software installed. Perhaps you have somehow uninstalled or corrupted your Touchpad software???

As far as the cursor jumping goes...I also had that problem. It was caused by the BASE of my THUMBS touching the touchpad while I typed. I'm more careful about that now, AND I turned DOWN the sensitivity of the Pad. Hope this helps.

I have the same problem. I press the UP ARROW key once the laptop completes booting. This solved the down key lock problem. I started hearing the beep sounds when I upgraded to windows 10. When I went back to windows 7 the beeping stopped during boot up but the down key problem exists. I am thinking of downgrading to XP to see if the noise problem and the keyboard works. I hope its not due to my ram upgrade.

Hi,
I bought my Acer laptop (aspire 5610z) used a couple months back. It's always been a good laptop, except that the mouse pad keys were "loose" and wobbly. A couple days ago, I decded to fix both keys. I took the screen, top cover/palm rest, and keyboard out. Nothing too major. I succeeded in fixing the keys, and they both work like new. (a plastic piece broke off each of them so I superglued them back together.) I put everything back together, powered it on, and realized that the touchpad didn't work. Like anyone would do, I took it back apart, and realized that the ribbon cable running from the touchpad to the motherboard was out of its housing, so I plugged it back in. It still wouldnt work, so I stopped for the night. The next day, I was tinkering with it, and somehow the keyboard stopped working too. I get mad at this point. Its not like I broke anything all the times I opened the laptop up. Frustrated, I stopped for the day. Sunday night, I try to fix it again, and to my suprise and luck, the keyboard and touchpad worked again. I was happy, and started using the laptop. I didn't use for more than 20min, when guess what, the keyboard, touchpad, and the volume/play buttons on the side all stopped working, again. (I unplugged that volume/play ribbon cable, also.)The keyboard will work in screens like where it says "windows error recovery, start in safe mode, command prompt, normal." It just won't work in regular windows.

A:Laptop touchpad and keyboard problems

Zif cables

You need to be really careful when taking apart a notebook..the ZIF cables (Zero Insertion Force) sometimes called Flex Cables are extermely fragile...the connector on the motherboard has little slides that you pull out, then remove the ZIF connector, the cable will go in/out with "Zero Force" To install make sure the slide is OUT, then put the ZIF cable in and you push the slide back in...cable connected. If you just pull these cables out and try to force them back in you will shred the ends and the keyboard/touchpad/etc won't work.

if only SOME of the keyboard does not work, like a small area, maybe the 1, 2, q, w, a, keys..that means the ZIF cable is not inserted all the way...reseat the cable and it should work fine..

Many of these cables can be bought for $5 or so on eBay if you need to replace them...I have bought several of them from a guy..I can get his information if you need it.

Hi Everyone:

I have a Toshiba A85 S-107 Satellite laptop. The keyboard and touch pads are acting weirdly, a little too weird to describe here. Basically the keyboard won't work at all and when I try to use it in Word, for example, it doesn't type but random windows open up when I hit keys. The touchpad works OK in that the mouse goes where I want it to but the buttons also do weird things when pressed. Since the problem began the keyboard worked fine once after a restart and it ALWAYS works perfectly in Command Mode. I tried to get it to work in Safe Mode but no good.

I've cleaned a lot of crap out of my drive and did all the usual virus scans and it doesn't help. Someone suggested I reinstall the keyboard driver but I have no idea where to find it and Google searches for it turn up nothing. Any ideas appreciated.

I checked the device manager, and there's a yellow exclamation point next to the keyboard. So I did some basic troubleshooting like disabling/enabling the keyboard, updating, and reinstalling the keyboard drivers. So far, nothing has worked.

However, I have found that my function keys still work correctly. People have suggested using functions like Fn+7 and such, but those have done nothing so far.

And if it helps, I'm using a Toshiba laptop with a synaptics touchpad.

EDIT: I've also checked for viruses by first running a quick scan on Malwarebytes, then a full scan.

Hi, I'm using a HP EliteBook. And recently I've been using this docking station to insert a monitor and a different keyboard to it. That worked fine until I then had to take my laptop with me and ejected it from the docking station in a hurry (while it was turned off). And now my laptop does not respond at all to neither the keyboard nor the touchpad. My wireless mouse works, so I used the screen keyboard to unlock the PC. And the question is then; how am I supposed to fix this?

A couple days ago, my keyboard and touchpad mouse stopped working. I thought it was a hardware issue and ordered a replacement keyboard. As for the touchpad, I'm just using a wireless mouse. I replaced the keyboard a couple days later with the new one, and when I turned on my laptop, it works again, but when I put my laptop to sleep and wake it up, I hit enter, and then it stops working. I cannot type anything until I restart my computer. I figured it has to do something with the drivers, but I'm not too sure. Here is my computer specs:

Product: HP Pavilion dv9700
Model: dv9925nr
Windows 7 home premium 64bit

I've gone to the HP website to get the drivers, but they do not support windows 7 for my computer.

try changing the power plan, as you said when it goes to sleep, it stops working. Ty changing it to high performance.

Ever since I've upgraded my dad's laptop to Windows 10, the keyboard and touchpad stop working randomly, and would work only after I restart the computer. (logging off, switch user, standby mode doesn't resolve it.)
There is no pattern to it. Sometimes it would be ok for a few days, sometimes it would happen again after a few hours. I mostly do internet browsing on the laptop.

When the problem occurred:
- The keyboard AND the touchpad would both stop working at the same time.
- USB mouse still works. (I do not have an external keyboard to test)
- The lights on the keys themselves (eg caps lock, wifi) would still remain on if they're activated but cannot be toggled on/off as usual.
- The device manager still showed no problems with the mouse or keyboard.

Things I've tried:
- sfc /scannow
- disabled sticky keys
- used the generic drivers for keyboard and touchpad
- reinstalled the drivers for keyboard and touchpad
- updated to the latest synaptics driver
- made a new synaptics trackpad profile
- disabled touchpad when using the USB mouse

Laptop stats:
HP Pavillion dm1-4002AU
Windows 10 Home 64bit (upgraded from Win7 and then reset to a fresh state)
AMD Radeon HD 6230 Graphics
6GB RAM
Synaptics Driver Version: 19.0.12.95 06Jul15
Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad
Lenovo ThinkPad PS/2 keyboard

This is very exasperating. I would appreciate some help in stopping this problem permanently, thanks.

Hello everyone. I have one big problem. I reinstalled my 8.1 pro (legal copy, disk been fully formatted) and it was okay for few hours. Next time im starting the laptop, my keyboard and touchpad doesnt work. I plugged USB mouse and keyboard and it works just fine. I went to device manager and besides Standart PS/2 keyboard and mouse icons there was orange triangle meaning that i have problem with drivers. I searched drivers online, but unsuccsessily.. After few hours of trying to fix it, my Standart PS/2 Keyboard turned into Unknown device and now im completely lost. Adding photo of device manager, i hope someone will help me here.

Since we do not know the make and model of your laptop.
Should try the laptop manufacturer's website to see if you can find the drivers for this. Does look like there missing.

What does it tell you when you right click the ones with yellow exclamation points ?

You can right click and select update driver software, either search automatically or browse your computer, select signed driver from the list is shows you.

I have a Model 13-a010dx win 10 and the Keyboard and mouse stopped working.  I cna iuse external mouse and keyboard.  I also bought a new keyboard to test out and that does not work. Is it something to do with Tablet feature?  I turn off the "Tablet on" feature and still no luck.  When I turn on PC I have to finger swipe, since no keyboard working, and when it go to PAssword screen the keyboard already comes up for me so it seems like it always things it's in tablet mode or something.    I tried the recovery and load bios defaults and no luck. THanks for any ne help in this matter. DOn

My laptop (ACER Aspire 1640) is struggling. The symptoms are:

1) It started with the keyboard behaving oddly. First, random keys didn't work (mostly the s key).

2) Then, whilst booting, beeping sounds would prevent the booting process. However, I was still able to boot by using f12. Both these symptoms indicated that a key was being pressed (assuming the s key since this was usually the one behaving strangely). Therefore, I removed some keys and cleaned underneath. This didn't seem to make much difference.

3) More and more keys would stop working after booting. However, once the laptop has "warmed up", 10 minutes or so after it has been turned on, all keys are again working.

4) The touchpad has stopped working.

5) The ACPI reports battery power incorrectly. It indicates that there is only 50 minutes of power left when 100% charged. However, I have verified that there is actually 80 minutes. When the battery indicator reached around 5%, I let the computer run until the battery was drained. This draining took more than half an hour where it should have been a matter of minutes considering that the indicator said that only 5% was left.

6) The PCMCIA slot has stopped working.

7) The mobile phone that I connect to the laptop via a USB port is having trouble getting reasonable Internet speeds. I have tested the phone on another laptop with the same configuration and the same cable, and here speeds are as expected.

My assumption is that the laptop is not ... Read more

No solid ideas to offer you. I suggest that you experiment a bit.

Run on battery only (since it is capable of being fully charged).
Use external keyboard and mouse. Some laptops accept a ps2 y-connector so both can be used at the same time. Mine does not, as an example.
I have not tried USB connectivity for either the KB or the mouse. While battery is considered a stable power source, remove the battery and run off the adapter. This will check out the filter & regulator.

Yours symptoms are many. However, replaceable parts on a laptop are hard to do without professional help. Opening the case & looking for loose or pinched cables may not be worth the risk/hassle.

Every spyware and virus detection says this computer is clean but something is eating the Ram such that the pointer stalls and must "rest" for 3-5 seconds before it can be moved again. Keyboard commands seem to work fine. Disc has been cleaned, defraged. Hard drive is only used at 15% capacity. Any ideas on what else we can try?

This could be either hardware of software issues. To make sure, have your system updated, BIOS and drivers I recommend the use of HP SDM ( Softpaq Download manager - www.hp.com/go/sdm ) to update the system. When it runs and downloads the latest catalog,    * select 'check for updates' tab - if not the default when you run SDM    * install auto-checkmarked drivers, NOT the BIOS, at this point        it may occasioanly suggest 2 versions of dirvers - select the latest version only    * install any other (ONLY) drivers that show as Not Installed + Essential System Updates softpaq    * select BIOS update (if needed) by itself and Install        DO NOT SHUTDOWN if the laptop beeps a few times during the BIOS update !!! Let it continue to final Reboot

Yesterday, after restarting my PC to finish updates from Windows, and installations from Autodesk and MATLab, my keyboard, touch pad and wireless mouse stopped working. After checking the drivers, I found that the keyboard and mouse drivers had a code 32. So I did a system restore before all the updates. Did nothing for the drivers.I tried uninstalling, updating the drivers; didn't work. Then I used CCleaner to clean up registry errors. No changes.Next, I went into the registry and deleted the UpperFilter values for the keyboard and mouse drivers. Code 32 was gone for HID keyboard driver and the HID mouse driver. But now the ps/2 keyboard driver and the synaptics smbus driver now had a code 10.After removing and reconnecting my wireless mouse's usb, I noticed that fixed drivers come and go with it, so I tried to find the drivers for the mouse to try a manual reinstall for my mouse. Couldn't find them, (Logitech's website was of no help). So I got Driver Booster to help me. The program said my PC had a lot of outdated drivers, so I decided to let the program update them all in hopes it would fix both the code 10 and let my mouse work again. And that's how the touchscreen stopped responding. Driver Booster had paused while downloading the driver for the Bluetooth as Windows Defenders stopped it. When I tried to allow the download, I notice my only method of interacting with my PC had failed.I force shut down the PC in hopes that the problem would be fixed. Didn't work.So now, I can... UPDATE:Okay, I found that there was a way to force the PC into recovery mode without any buttons.I took out the battery, forced a shut down, and unplugged the power cord when I turned it on. After replugging the power and powering up, it went into recovery.Touchscreen and keyboard worked in recovery mode, was too excited to test TouchPad and mice.Anyways, I'm resetting the PC now. Hopefully this fixes it all.I'm somewhat leary of doing updates, however. Reading around online, some had this issue for their keyboards and mice due to Windows 10 hybrid shutdown and fast startup. I'm going to try to turn that off, update everything, and hope that fixes everything. Will update status later.Hope anyone having similar issues find this useful.

I don't know for sure the the Win7 update killed the track-pad, but about a week or so ago after I let it run I've lost the track-pad function completely and the keyboard is erratic. If I accidentally hit the Caps Lock key the keyboard stops responding. I discovered if I open the keyboard control panel and just change a parameter, like how fast the cursor blinks and APPLY then I get the keyboard back without rebooting. I downloaded the track-pad driver, says it's the same as installed but the system no longer recognizes it's there in the control panel. This is an HP G60 series laptop running Win 7 Home.

I'm downloading TSG to add that info, but searching I see many people have had similar problems like this with no solution on various brands of laptops and Windows. Anyone suggest a reason for this? And how to fix it without reinstalling Windows from scratch?

Hi,

I'm not sure if I should post this under malware or somewhere else, but quite a while back a rootkit disabled my laptop's keyboard and touchpad. The rootkit has supposedly been removed (multiple scans pick up nothing, Malwarebytes, MSE, TDSSKiller etc.), but the keyboard remains disabled...

Reinstalling the drivers does not help, and I'd like to avoid reformatting if possible.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.
