Removed FBI Moneypak virus, deleted MSE but can't download MSE/Apps still.

Q: Removed FBI Moneypak virus, deleted MSE but can't download MSE/Apps still.

I can tell my computer is still infected with something because I can't download Hitman Pro or other programs that may help me continue scanning. The ones I have detect nothing (used rkill, then TDSSKiller and MBAM and Trend Micro Housecall). I can't even download HitmanPro and it deleted my MSE completely (which I also can't redownload). Firefox acts as if it downloaded these thing to my desktop and then it's not there.
I don't have another computer or a flash drive. What can I do?

Preferred Solution: Removed FBI Moneypak virus, deleted MSE but can't download MSE/Apps still.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Please follow the instructions in THIS GUIDE starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it HERE. Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic. If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient. If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.

So I recently fell victim to what a Google search told me is the "FBI Moneypack" "ransom" virus that's been going around. It wasn't this exact screenshot for me but it looked something like it:
http://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2012/august/new-internet-scam
I booted my computer in safe mode, read some literature, downloaded the free version of Malwarebytes, and ran a scan which found some files it deleted. I rebooted normally and, thank god, everything's fine now, the screen's gone and I'm typing this from said malware'd computer. My question is, do you advise anything I do anything else? I just ran another malwarebytes scan, which turned up negative, and I'm currently running another standard MS Security Essentials system scan. In the event that everything seems fine and ends up back to normal, should I still take any other actions or consult a (real-life) tech help pro? Thanks a lot!

This started out with my friend's computer getting FBI MoneyPak virus, I ran MBAM and selected 'fix checked' and most everything cleared up. The hosts file is still hacked, and the registry points to a non-existent program run st log in time, some users on the computer have minor problems, but these 2 are the main ones. I was infected with the malware from the moneypak scam. I followed the first part of the procedure published several times by naranxp to remove the malware (see post by bighenny22 for example). I then rebooted in normal mode and followed the remainder of the procedure to check the system. My computer has been running fine now for two days. My question is: Have I done everything I need to? I ask, because naranxp asks for log files, which I can't understand. Should I look at something particular in those files? Finally, my thanks to naranxp for working out a good fix and being kind enough to post it multiple times for those of us less skilled.

Got hit with one of the MoneyPak viruses today and removed it with MalwareBytes and then another trojan with Emisoft Emergency Kit. Computer's still acting less responsive than before though, so I want to be sure I've got everything cleaned out.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium on an Acer Aspire. I've been sticking to Safe Mode with Networking as much as possible now until I can be mostly positive I've gotten this thing clean again.

It's been awhile since I last posted here, so I'm not sure what other info you need or if you still do HijackThis logs, or something new now, or what. So just tell me what you need and I'll provide it.

My PC was hit by a virus last week. It was unprotected. I managed to install Kaspersky and Spyware doctor from CDs, but it's still very infected.

Ultimate Cleaner was part of it, but that no longer shows up.

The major problem i have is that it redirects me off any tech sites or anti-spyware sites so its impossible to get any anti-malware from the web. I did manage somehow to download malware bytes anti-malware, but it won't install - the error i get is "not a valid win32 application".

The other problems i have are:
Can't restore active desktop
Most functions have been removed from start bar
CD drive and C drive do not appear in windows explorer
"Virus alert" by the clock

Is there a workaround? I also have firefox on the PC is there anyway i can access that?

Thanks

A:Virus - Can't Download And Install Any Anti-virus Apps

If you cannot use the Internet or download any programs, you are going to need access to another computer (family member, friend, etc) with an Internet connection. Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, save it to a flash (usb, pen, thumb, jump) drive or CD, transfer it to the infected machine, then install and run the program. If you cannot transfer or install from the infected machine, try running the setup (installation) file directly from the flash drive or CD so it will install on the hard drive. Please print out and follow these instructions to perform a Quick Scan in normal mode. When done, click the Logs tab and copy/paste the contents of the new report in your next reply.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

Please reply fast.

A:download contains a virus and is deleted

The Windows Operating system cannot detect any viruses, if it could, there would be no need for an Anti-Virus software.
What are you downloading? If you are downloading Keygens to pirated software, it would be software that is not harmful to your computer, but has been tagged as a virus, pre se, even though it is not, to keep you from installing it, so it quarantines it or deletes it.
If you want to take the risk, you can disable your Anti-Virus software when you download, and if you keep the downloaded file in a Zip archive folder it will not get deleted by your AV software when you turn it back on.

Hi-

I really hope I'm just missing something obvious here.
I've been working on this one for HOURS, and the I can't think of new ways to phrase this question to search engines...

This started with a particularly nasty version of the FBI Moneypak malware.
This one would not even allow access in safe mode, or safe w/command prompt..

After many "low impact" attempts failed, eventually I removed the infected HD and attached it via a USB device to a working computer.
Once the drive initialized, I scanned it with virus/malware programs and removed the FBI Moneypak.

However, upon returning the "cleaned" HD to its original computer, it started up just fine but then... no icons, blank desktop, no start menu, no right click...

I am able to access programs normally through the task manager, etc..
But the whole, run "explorer.exe" fix doesn't do anything.

I also tried creating new user account, and guess what?! Same issue with brand new account... no icons, no R-click, etc.

At this point, it occured to me that the problem was likely system wide... perhaps explorer.exe was damaged during the removal of the FBI malware? or maybe the registry paths were jacked up by the recovery efforts somehow??

(I have also run SFC /SCANNOW.. found nothing... tried startup repair w Win7 DVD, no luck... )

In any case, I can't seem to figure this one out.
Have tried many, many fixes from the internet, none have worked

Any help or advice ... Read more

A:FBI Moneypak removed, now no start menu, icons or right click

UPDATE: Tried ComboFix again, just to see what would happen, and it appears to have fixed this issue.
Didn't expect that, but I'll take it.... Will post a confirmation after more testing, but I wanted to stop any pros from wasting their time on this for now

Since May 22nd I have had this problem of when I download a file the pop-up at the bottom of the page tells me that the download contains a virus and was deleted. I have run Microsoft Safety Scanner, downloaded to a thumb drive from another computer. No help. Microsoft Security Essentials is corrupted I cannot install it because I can't uninstall the original install or it detects the new download as having a virus and deleted it from the thumb drive. Needing some help here.
Thanks.

Hello, my parents computer will not allow any downloads of any item.  I have tried multiple browsers, safe mode, resetting IE11, etc.  I uninstalled McCaffe and tried downloading, no luck, tried getting rid of the infection with Norton and no luck.   The download will download everything up to 99%, then it "detects" a virus and the download fails. I'm not an expert but I can find my away around a computer with some instruction (unfortunately due to past issues lol).  Thanks for the help!  Ben

For those reasons I cannot check security essential logs, cannot delete and reinstall essentials. All downloads (including the Win Safety Scanner) are flagged as infected and deleted. Hello,
I removed an infection on a pc and this problem still persists.  Any attempt to download anything gives the error message "(filename) contained a virus and was deleted".  I've run several antivirus programs and all report clean and I've reset IE to defaults and the problem is still occuring.  Running Vista SP2 64-bit, other logs as to what has been run can be viewed here.  The administrator account has been enabled and ie is able to download and save files fine under that account, the main user account is still displaying the error though.

New to this forum - in desperation mode!!!

A couple of weeks ago developed two problems, I'll focus on this one first: Any email attachment I try to open, file download, etc., as always, I'm asked: Run - Save - Cancel.  If I click Run or Save, a box pops up naming the file or attachment, says it has a virus and was deleted.  Game over, I can't do anything else.

Running Windows 7, Google reg version, have gotten rid of my McAfee Security and Avisoft for now.  Lots of advice on how to get rid of this but have one big problem: I can't download any fixes. I've tried clicking this and that, or go into regedit but the files in subfolders I'm supposed to look for aren't there.

Not computer literate but with detailed steps will give anything a try....Thanks!!!

Hi,

Wondering if anyone can help?

Was unable to download any files would say file contained a virus and was deleted, I did some research and my understanding was that the computer was infected with a virus.  I deleted my anti virus software as some sites instructed to, I am currently using Trend Titanium.  I ran Windows defender offline which removed a Trojan virus.  I also downloaded malwarbytes onto a usb from my laptop and also ran this on the infected PC this removed 4 Trojans, also windows firewall and defender was not working, I got firewall working by adding something into the registry (as instructed to on another site) now I am left with no windows defender and this error saying all files deleted due to virus.  I currently  have not re installed my anti virus yet as I am trying to fix this first.  I have done several system restores also and this has not fixed it.  Does anyone know what this problem is and how to fix it without completely wiping my computer?

Thanks,
Kelly

This is most likely a ZeroAccess Rootkit. If you cannot do this on that PC try running DDS (in the Guide) from a Flash Drive. If you still cannot run DDS, then just open the new topic (Guide, step 7) with the original question. Mention you cannot run DDS.Title your post Probable Zero Access. Please follow this Preparation Guide and post in a new topic.Let me know if all went well.

Using XP\Home, Emachine 4697...I started with some minor problems and now my OE mails (send and receive) are arbitrarily deleted. I removed Google FF, MS Security, Google Earth and some other stuff.
When I rebooted they were all back.
MalwareBytes found 3 files: "PUP.Adware.ag" in C:\Systems Volume Information\Restore\0504B..........

I removed them with Malware, then rebooted and all the other stuff was back and Malware was removed...but not by me.

I removed all anti viruses, installed AVG, ran a scan, when I returned to the computer AVG and any results were gone, gone, gone.

A real mess.

Any help welcome!

Just thought I would mention this.

I uninstalled all the Microsoft Apps.

I freed-up 4.5 GBs by doing so.

I never used them anyway.

I ran sfc /scannow & DISM afterwards & sfc again after rebooting.

No issues.

That's all.

A:Apps removed

Hello David,

What method did you use to uninstall the apps?

If you mean the default apps that come included in Windows 8, then you'll find that when you use the usual uninstall apps method they don't actually get uninstalled from Windows, but only actually get turned off for the account that they were uninstalled from instead.

This is because all account on the PC come with these default apps available from the same source below.

The default Store apps that come included with Windows 8/8.1 are store in the hidden C:\Program Files\WindowsApps folder that you would have to take ownership of and set permissions to "Allow" your account "Full control" of first before it will let you open the folder.

I suppose I will just try and follow the guide 'Remove the FBI MoneyPak Ransomware or the Reveton Trojan'. The splash screen for the virus looks a bit different than seen in the guide, which is why I am a bit hesitant, but it will hopefully still work..?

Hello all,

There are a few apps that keep installing themselves even after I removed them. 3D builder, Get Office, etc. Is there a way, or a couple ways to get them to NOT install once I remove them? Or to at the very least block them from functioning (example, the Get Office app notifies me about getting office all the time).

Thanks!

A:Prevent removed apps from reinstalling

I have removed them and they do not reinstall, unless you run SFC scan or a restore from an image.
Anyway, when you go to Settings - Privacy - Background apps - you can block notifications there.

hi im just wondering what apps should not be removed i have windows installed onto a small ssd and will never use any of the apps besides calculator off the top of my head, and its a laptop so really i don't need apps. i have already uninstalled cortana and it now crashes computer while typing into start so anything like that is what im looking for thanks

A:what apps should not be removed (breaks installation)?

Hi, quite agree about ignoring apps mostly. Best to use Classic Shell or similar as a start menu.

Cortana is not intended to be removed. There is no formal easy way to remove any of the universal apps except with powershell commands. It simply isn't worth bothering, as these will be reinstated in any new upgrade released by MS such as the November build. There will be more to come.

Note too that the powershell commands to reinstall/repair apps now break them last I knew - we hope MS will fix that.

This implies fixing your PC now means either
- you restore a previously created disk image (you do use disk imaging, don't you.. it's a huge advantage
or
- you do an in-place upgrade repair install (see tutorial section for full instructions).

How do you keep Win10 from reinstalling apps I removed? Furthermore.. how to delete 10's metro apps that it wont let me uninstall? ( I wont ever use any metro or new UI apps so I want them All removed from my system.)

A:How do U keep Win 10 from reinstalling apps I removed? (& Privacy)

To uninstall all the store apps, including the ones that don't have an uninstall option, do the following:

Open Powershell and type: Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers

This returns a list of all the installed apps, you use this to find the PackageFullName of the app you want to uninstall.

To uninstall an app type: Remove-AppxPackage PackageFullName

The only apps I haven't been able to remove are 'Contact Support', 'Cortana' and 'Windows Feedback'.
You can disable Cortana by renaming its folder. You have to have the 'Try again' dialogue cued up to hit as soon as you stop the Cortana process.
You can remove OneDrive from the command prompt:

%SystemRoot%\SysWOW64\OneDriveSetup.exe /uninstall
You can stop data being sent to Microsoft by disabling two services and making a registry entry. You can find the details of that easily with Google or on here.

Earlier today, I decided to accept the free offer on my Win 7 Samsung laptop to upgrade to Windows 10. The upgrade checker started by telling me that this laptop was compatible but now seems to be in two minds about the subject and won't let me upgrade. Some assistance would be greatly appreciated, as the July 29 deadline is fast approaching.

One screen on the Get Windows 10 dialogue box reads as follows:

This PC works with Windows 10

You won't be able to use the Guest account in Windows 10.

You'll need to uninstall these apps during the upgrade
Samsung Recovery Solution 5
Easy Settings [another Samsung app]

I decided to uninstall the 2 Samsung apps before starting the Win 10 upgrade, but the Get Windows 10 dialogue box still insists that they are there despite a couple of reboots. Those apps no longer appear in Control Panel's Uninstall or Change a Program list. Neither are there any obviously related Services still running.

When I try to proceed with the Win 10 upgrade I am presented with another page of the Get Windows 10 dialogue box:

Unfortunately, this PC is unable to run Windows 10
We're sorry to let you know that this PC can't upgrade to Windows 10 because one of more things are incompatble. See right for details [that takes me back to the other page quoted above, which tells me that my laptop works with Win 10!]

This is very frustrating. Where do I go from here?

A:return apps removed while refreshing PC/ windows 8

Hi Pops, I am sorry that happened to you    -- it is actually the way the strandard Refresh program is written. The short answer:  You have to reinstall everything that is missing from your backups. The list of missing apps should be in a file located on your Desktop:  Removed Apps.htmlHow you get them back depends on what they are, where they came from, and what is needed to resintall them. About the standard Refresh procedure:Refresh your Windows 8 system from a Recovery Drive ? OEM Recovery You might like to read about how to use File History (backup and restore features) and how to create a Custom Refresh Image that will have more of what you need when you next perform a Refresh on Windows 8.  Those subjects are included in the document link shown below.  This may well be a case of "too little, too late" for this time, but you might find the information helpful later. When SkyDrive opens, look for and open the file named:Windows 8 Features ? A Quick Tour I hope this helps. Click the Kudos Star!It is a great ?Thank You? for the HP Experts who are here to help!

Got the Anti-virus soft virus more then a couple of weeks ago and was pretty sure I got it all. One of the things it did was attack my Hotmail account and send emails out to everyone in my contact list and my girlfriend got the (something) essentials 2010. I will post about that later on if I have problems. I was going to use the Hirens 10.2 boot disk and see if I could finish it off. I received an email from her with a couple of pictures of the kids. I opened one but not the other. The problem is she didn?t send me the email. Anyway I have used various spy-ware and malware removal tools as suggested from this very helpful forum and have the logs if you want to see them. So I am hoping you can take a look at my logs and see if you see any discrepancies. Thinking I need to reinstall Avast but not sure. I have used the basics and quarantined quit a bit of trojans and others. I have used Malwarebytes (Which I used first and didn't completely remove Anti-virus Soft.) SuperAntiSpyware, HyjackThis, Spybot, RootKitBuster, (I wasn't sure how interpret the log and what to do) SpyWareBuster, Combofix, a-squared Free, (Wish I could delete a2squared.exe from my start-up list) Dr.Web, (I had a warning on Combofix about a possible Varuit but it didn't find one) Norman Malware Cleaner, CCleaner, ATF Cleaner, Ran scans with Trend Micro Housecall and Avast. I think that?s it. I have the logs if you wish to see them.-------------------------------------------DDS (Ver_09-12-01.01) -... Read more

A:Originally had Anti-virus Soft. Thought I had removed it. Have removed various Trojans and malware in the last week.

Here is an updated file. Had to uninstall all antivirus and delete all entries including registry. Had many entries from past antivirus software. I then did a clean install of Avira. I have a toshiba satellite laptop running windows vista basic. I became infected with the moneypak virus yesterday. I have had it before and have been able to get rid of it. But this time, I can't seem to get anything to work! I can't get into safe mode except with command prompt, but it even pops up there depending on what I do. I tried the usb drive option but both the anvisoft rescue disk and hitman jumpstart arent working! Hitman tells me its uploading to cloud computers but then it fails to upload any of the files and claims there is no infection and the 2 or 3 files it actually gives me an option to delete, I go to delete them and after clicking the free registration button it says it cant do anything because windows firewall is blocking it! As for the anvisoft option, it says it has no connection to the cloud server and I can't figure out how to establish any kind of wireless connection and i currently have no option to get a wired connection. So I have been looking all over the internet and havent been able to find anything helpful. PLEASE HELP ME!!! I have no money for a new laptop and I am now clueless as to getting rid of this version of the moneypak infection! So SOS!!!

Hi metmaniac88,

My name is etavares and I'll be helping you with this computer.  First things first, do you 1 ) have a spare blank USB drive we can use?  and 2 ) What exactly does the moneypak screen say?  It is department of Justice, Interpol, etc.?  That will help tell me which variant it is and direct you where to look.  Also, 3 ) try unplugging from the internet, then booting up.  Can you access normal mode without getting locked out?  Some variants require internet access when loading to activate the lockout.

I've had this virus before, and was able to get rid of it with a system restore and then do various scans.
However, this time, it deleted all of my restore points and won't let me into safe mode.
It tells me that "all activities of this computer has been recorded. All your files are encrypted. Don't try to unlock your computer!" And then a bunch of stuff about how I have violated copyright laws, and to get rid of this message, I need to buy a moneypak giftcard worth $300 and input the code in the next 72 hours or they'll file charges against me.
When I log in it immediately goes to this page, and if I go into safe mode [with networking or the command prompt, too] it starts to log on, and then reboots. I got to my system restore through the "Repair your computer" thing, and it said I had no restore points.
The startup repair detects nothing wrong, either.
My other options are:
-System image recovery
-Windows memory diagnostic
-Command prompt
-Dell DataSafe restore and emergency backup

Ctrl+Alt+Dlt works, when I'm logged on as usual, but if I try to open the task manager or anything it just goes to the FBI screen.
Help?

A:FBI MoneyPak virus?

Welcome aboard

Disconnect computer from the internet by disconnecting ethernet cable or turning off wireless connection.
See if you can start in normal or safe mode.

Recently my computer was infected with the MoneyPak FBI virus and I am at a complete loss of how to remove it. I have very limited knowledge in computers so please be patient with me if I don't know something!
As of now I am running Windows 7 Home Professional. The virus has made it so that I cannot access any Safe Mode besides that with Command Prompt. I've tried downloading Windows Defender onto a USB and booting into a full scan on the computer, but it failed to detect any threats. I had a friend take a look at it as well and he spent some time looking through the Command Prompts, telling me I had to completely reinstall the Operating System, but I feel like it could be fixed otherwise.
I've tried looking around the tower for more information on the computer itself (not sure if it's relevant in removing the virus) but this was all I could find:
iBuyPower i-Series 301
SN:CC89-C860-6F48-C583
As of now, the PC has no access to the internet as well. Thank you so much for your help.
