secure download blocked

Q: secure download blocked

Trying to download a program from a secure site (Discover Card). At the last just before it puts an icon on the task bar, the pointer turns to look like a little hard drive with a red circle and slash through it. I don't get the icon or program. Tried to turn off IE popup blocker and the same thing happened.

Any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I read through the pre-posting guidelines and attempted to download DDS, but this virus or whatever is on my computer has completely blocked my ability to download anything that could potentially help you guys help me. If there is a workaround that someone knows that I don't, please let me know. I'll do whatever I need to to get this damn thing off my computer. It started as a Google redirect virus which I seemed to have under control, and then all of a sudden my data usage spiked today and everything that I normally use to control something like this stopped working. What I can tell you is that when I saw my data go out of control, I opened my Task Manager and found dllhost.exe *32 COM Surrogate running and it will not stop. I had never seen that running before. I'm just at a complete loss. I really hope you guys can help me and if not... walk me through a complete and utter wipe, reformat, whatever you call it.

A:Google Redirect Virus, DDS download blocked, TDSSKiller.exe blocked

I was able to run DDS and TDSSKiller from a jump drive. No reaction from TDSSKiller - no threats found. Log from DDS is included below. I should probably also say that this was run in Safe Mode since I didn't know if it would even work in a regular boot. If I need to run it in a regular boot, let me know and I can post that log as well.

These include the bank, library (where I can request or secure books for later) my ISP (!) and a government agency. Two of these have my Hotmail address registered, two have Gmail.

I investigated this myself (a little), trying to send an email from MsEdge, that didn't work either so I'm assuming it's not the browser at fault.

The library IT dept sent the message below which, as suggested, I forwarded to my ISP. I then spent a fruitless hour with a very patients techie who had no idea how to solve the problem. He suggested I try the Hotmail Fix-IT site - I already had, going through all the stages to no avail. Hi all

I'm experiencing a problem where certain sites are being blocked by something on my PC. This happens to the same sites in both IE6 and Firefox 2. I've tried disabling all windows firewall and PC-cillin software. I also ran through some suggestions which you can see in the thread in Web& Email (link below). A guy there suggested I try this forum as it appears to be a security issue.

http://forums.techguy.org/web-email/572550-odd-content-filter-firewall-issue-2.html

For an example of the problem, I can get access to http://hub.ebay.co.uk/buy just fine. But I cannot access www.ebay.co.uk. Similarly I can't access sites like online banking, expedia, etc.

There's a hijackthis log below if that helps. I've also run Ewido across the system to wipe out spyware of which there were a few bits.

Cheers

I had a problem getting a publicly accessible mp3 download.

The site could not transmit to XP. The same site transmitted to Win2k.

What was weird was the non loading site displayed "loading video" but this is not a video file. it is just audio.

The initial error that popped up was in XP from Firefox. I contaced Ffx and they said it was VLC program plugins.

Well on the Win2k I have VLC and Firefox but no problem.

It seems to be isolated at the OS. I have not had this problem with other sites, just the one.

Here is the original error:

Hello all,

I have a question about mediafire. I am interested in downloading a file from there, which itself seems legitimate. It is a demo version of an upcoming Titanic PC game. ("Honor and Glory".) When hovering over the "download" button on the game website, (http://www.titanichg.com/demo/), I'm presented with a link to Mediafire, which is ".../download/0h8x0ukru7y1pbr/Titanic+-+Honor+and+Glory+Demo.zip"

I have heard of some security flaws in the site, and read reports about numerous infections taking place there, drive-by downloads and such. I usually stay away from sites like this, although in this case, this file seems to be from a legitimate developer. What I am concerned about though is the possibility of picking up some malware from the site in general, or that the file, or its page, since its upload, may have been injected with something malicious.

Does this seem like a secure thing to do, or is there a substantial risk of malware here? Any input is appreciated.

A:Mediafire download... secure or not?

mediafire itself shouldn't be a problem however the fact that the file is hosted there does not seem right if it is from an official developer. Although the download page might* be ok, I strongly suspect that if you download the file and then run it the file will turn out to be a virus.
*There are often adverts on mediafire download pages, if you use an adblocker and script blocker you are safe from these however if you lack those then you run the risk that the adverts on the download page (like adverts anywhere else) could be used for drive-bys. This isn't a rpoblme specific to mediafire, it's a problem on many websites including large legitimate sites, often major sites (like news websites for exmaple) end up displaying** adverts around the corner which are used like this. This risk is real enough, but in your circumstances I suspect the risk from the file itself will be even greater.
**many major sites work with major ad networks, major ad networks get adverts from smaller ad networks, and so on, until somewhere down the chain a very small ad network is tricked into displaying a malvertising advert, this advert is bought by larger and larger networks until it ends up on a major site.

Hi all,

I have an issue where by when a file is accessed on a website it attempts to open the file for downloading, this action is blocked and I get the 'Information Bar' popup along the top telling me what it has done.

I know that this is because within IE Tools > Internet Options > Security > Custom Level > 'Automatic Prompting for Downloads' is disabled.

My problem is that there is a policy in place on the system that must disable this by default, and users do not have the permission to be able to access the IE tools menu. Is there a way to get round this or is this something we will need to change in our policy?

Thanks

A:IE 6 - File Download Blocked

yes this wouldn't be so easy jsut to get around your going to have to be on a different account(administrator) or "change your policy" you could always just use a different browser such as firefox if you have a USB drive you can go to portableapps.com (its a good safe site) download there portable version of firefox ( heres the link) on to your usb flash drive or a cd you could even just email the file to yourself open the browser then the IE settings don't matter because you wont be using it

if you have any more questions just post back or email me i would be glad to help!

I traced the problem back to the fact that Secure Download Manager relies on Internet Explorer which in my case has an outdated version of javascript for the download page.
I suspect that the script stops at .trim() which requires javascript 1.8 according to this page, but IE 8 only has version 1.5.

I tried updating to IE 11 but it requires some updates that I found very problematic to install.

Is there any way around this?

because the Microsoft.com update site is being blocked.    Spent days on this just can't get out of catch 22 of being romped to update and downloading site preventing/blocking updates to the browser and the windows update.  Any Ideas?

Spybot blocked Avenue A, Inc. download.

I looked in spybot and it is a cookie.

Did not know spybot stopped things from being installed.
But I looked for a cookie from Avenue A, Inc. and I did not have one so I guess spybot stopped it.

Has anyone else had spybot stop anything from being installed?

All of a sudden I can not download any programs, music files etc. I just get the above message in my Mozilla Firefox download screen. The same thing happened when I tried Internet Explorer.

I am running Windows XP and using Firefox 3.0.1. This problem began in the last few days and I have no idea what may have triggered it. I have gone into the Internet section of control panel and reduced the zone protection to the minimum. I have turned the firewall in McAfee off. These actions did not have any effect. I am not aware of any other program on my computer that would cause this to happen. I use Sypware Doctor, but I disabled that also. My computer is set to load Windows updates automatically and that would be the only software updated I might have loaded.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

I have a problem with my IE ( I think). I cannot update IE from Microsoft. I get a page that says, "This object is blocked". I get the same page now when I try to download Hijackthis.exe. I had that program on my computer, but when I went to use it today, I got a message saying the location has changed, and upon a search it was nowhere to be found. Something has entered my system and disabled it and won't allow me to access the programs I need to fix it, (so it seems). Also, all of the icons, including my volume control, that were next to my clock at the bottom right of my computer on the toolbar have disappeared.

I'm posting here to get help with a problem I'm having. Some of the normal sites I visit and while surfing them, I'm greeted by a Download dialog box in Chrome that prompts me to download a file named Sed. I have attached a screenshot of the dialog box. Malwarebytes has been blocking outbound IP attempts from chrome.exe and sometimes skype. The one I was able to catch is 80.82.78.169 that points to the Netherlands. I tried to run DDS, but It will not run on Windows 8.1 so I used FRST, and here are the logs.

Hi:

My colleague brought me his computer. Apparently, he uninstalled AVG and at some point installed Malware Defense. I've deleted all traces of Malware Defense from the registry and unregistered the associated dlls but I cannot successfully install AVG9--the installation always fails due to not responding in a timely fashion. I can install Spybot 1.62 but it won't launch in either regular nor safe mode. Likewise I can install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware but it won't respond.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Tom

Started to open IE from the program list , until that no longer worked ( 2 days)
IE is getting online, I can ping sites and my anti virus updates etc but IE will not open any web sites - except secure ones

Despite the fact that my Norton Internet Security 2006 shows my Spysweeper as an "allowed" program, it's downloads have been blocked for almost three days now. I checked the "Alerts" log and therein found countless log entries of Webroot updates being blocked! This is whacky. One part of the Norton software says okay, this program and it's associated activities are approved and safe to accept. At the same time the internet safety software partition is stopping the needed update downloads! And, for the life of me, I can't undo these blocks. There doesn't seem to be any apparatus to do so. If a program is on the approved list, then there shouldn't be any blocking going on. But there is in this case, and my Spysweeper, only five weeks onboard, has been effectively rendered useless. Inquiries to both Symantec and Webroot have been made, but no answers are yet forthcoming. I disabled Norton long enough to attempt another manual download from Webroot but, incredibly, that failed as well! This is odd. If the Symantec software clearly documents its blocking activity, why does the blocking continue despite the flippin' software having been turned off? Has anyone encountered this? If someone has Spysweeper and is thoroughly familiar with its wrinkles, I'd really appreciate some rescue here. This is making me nuts.

Help guys!

I think I got a virus - I can't change the firewall settings anymore, on avast - my real time shields status is unknown and it won't let me turn it on. When I try to turn it on it says "Unable to start the file system shield! Shield unreachable."

ALso I can't access the internet. I get the computer icon with the exclamation mark and when I try to diagnose, it says "Windows could not automatically detect this network's proxy settings."

I scanned with spyware doctor, malwarebytes, adware, super antispyware already and now scanning with avast. The previous ones removed alot of viruses but I still think there are some remaining.

I can't even use restore point cause it always fails :/ Please help!
