I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everybody

I picked up some nasty malware. AVG was updating and suddenly everything just fell apart.

I can't run any installation programs regardless of the extension or name. I've tried to install Rkill and MalwareBytes with absolutely no luck. It defaults to needing to be unblocked in the properties and no matter what compatibility mode I use it will not run. I get a 1084 error when I try to open the security center. In the taskbar I have an Action Center alert that says 1 Important Message and 3 Total Messages. The Action Center will not open at all. I do not have access to a USB key as I am not home, but I will be Tuesday evening. Any help would be infinitely appreciated.

Other notes I forgot: I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, and I am constantly getting errors that Windows can't load and needs to be repaired. It runs and restarts, sometimes being repaired and other times not.

Thanks a lot
Jared

A:Action center won't open, Internel Explorer only browser that will open, no MalwareBytes and RKill will not open

An update.

I've tried running MalwareBytes and RKill from a flash drive which is also not working. Windows also ends up unable to load, the startup repair runs and things work fine. Not long after Windows tries to update and then it becomes unable to load again and the startup repair runs again.

I tried running a registry fix for the .exe problem and I get an error stating that the registry is being used even when no programs are running and I am in safe mode.

Hope this information helps
thanks
Jared

After having searched both this forum, and the internet I've had no luck fixing this long occurring issue.  For whatever reason, when I click a link outside of my browser (Chrome by default, but I've tried with Firefox and IE as well) nothing happens.  Whether my browser is already open, or closed completely clicking a link from an external source such as Skype, MS Word etc does not work.  Links within my browser work, and the problem is temporarily fixed when I restart my computer, however after a few hours of uptime it happens again and clicking links does absolutely nothing.Edit: Moved topic from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum.~ Animal

A:Links do not open browser

Hello! Please try this instruction to tell your computer what program to use for links. It may have "forgotten"
Open up the Control Panel and double-click the Internet or Internet Options icon and then click on Programs.
Place a check in the box next to where it says Internet Explorer should check to see if it is the default and then click Apply and OK. After you do that, start up Internet Explorer and when it says Internet Explorer is not currently your default browser. Do you wish to make it the default? click on Yes.

I using my RSS reader, FeedDemon the other day and when I went to open up the feed in another browser, I received an error message that said "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel".

The today I tried to go to Firefox from a link in Windows Mail and I received the same error message. I think I know what the message is trying to say, so I poked around in "Default Programs" and "Associate a file type or protocol with a program", but I could not find anything.

A:Open OE Links in a Different Browser?

Go to Internet Explorer > Programs, and UNcheck "IE should check that it's the default browser",

Click OK, and reboot.

Subsequently have a look at the Crazy Browser's options. There may be a box to check there.

Hello Everyone,

I have just bought a new computer and upraded to windows 7 and IE9. Its an Intel i7 with a 64 bit operating system. I'm new here so I don't know if that info is relevant.

My problem is when I tried to open a link on a web page all I got was the little hand with a red and yellow star with an exclamation mark in it and then nothing else happens. I tried right clicking but the options to 'Open in another tab' were not available. So far it only happened in ebay when I tried to click on the online chat link. I just thought I would try to find out why, if possible, incase it happens again.

Any ideas anybody?

Thanks,

Eyespy

A:Unable to open links in IE9

There's no error message associated with the hand?

Can you take a screenshot the next time it happens?

To take a screenshot,

1- Hit the Printscreen key on your keyboard. This will copy your entire screen to the clipboard. Hitting ALT + Printscreen will only copy the active window.

2- Open Paint.

3- Select Edit.

4- Click on Paste.

5- Select File.

6- Click on Save As...

7- Save your screenshot as a JPEG file.

8- Attach the screenshot to your next post.

Hi, since a few weeks I have a curious problem: if I click on a link in an email, nothing happens if the the browser does not happen to be open at that moment. If instead I first open the browser (eventually minimizing it) andthen click on the link, it works.
The thing happens with Opera as well as with Firefox - IE apparently refuses to play even when running.
Has somebody an idea where the problem lies ?

Ok...so recently I have installed/uninstalled some "windows helpers". I don't know if this has anything to do with my problem but who knows.
I am unable to open any links in a new window. A link will open in the same window, i.e., the page will change to the linked page, but when trying to open in a new window, a browser pops up, it is kind of see through, and it never opens to that page....
Another strange thing is when I try to download I get a pop up that reads "this type of file can harm your computer if it contains malicious content"....I have never seen this type of warning before.
Can you please help I am having problems reading and answering mail because of it.
I am using Windows 98SE, IE6.0.
Thanks,

RELEVANCY SCORE 78.4

A few days ago I entered a thread saying that some links worked while others did not. I got numerous views, but no replies. I have since realized that apparently the links that work replace the existing page/window, but if it attempts to open a new window it just hangs without opening the new page.

I did eventually find a proposed solution for this situation in the Help section, but it didn't work. It had me click on the start/run buttons and try a succession of dll file entry runs, but none of them had any affect on my ability to open a new window.

If I right-click something and try the "open in new window" option, it will not complete. My technical knowledge is obviously very limited, and I don't know how to distinguish between links that call for a new window vs. links that just replace the existing page with the requested page.

I have Norton's System Works installed and have used the Windows and System diagnostic utilities, but despite some corrections, this particular inability to open a new window with Internet Explorer has me puzzled and perplexed. If anyone has a solution suggestion I would certainly appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks !!

A:Unable to open links with new windows

Hi

I'm not sure what is causing your problem but to start checking things out you could do the following:-

1/ Go to TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS and empt out all cookies and temp files and then reset your browser to 'default setting'.

2/ Do a full sweep with updated versions of 'Adaware-se' and 'spybot search and destroy' and then do a online virus check at Trend Micro Housecall.

3/ Go to START>RUN and with your XP disk in the drive, type sfc /scannow (make sure you have a space after the sfc) hit enter key and allow the file checker to run.

If none of that helps, I would advise doing a post on the HJT board as your browser may have been affected by something that needs removing.

If you try the above and it doesn't help, keep posting as I'm sure someone will come up with the solution. If the moderators consider you might be helped by the HJT board they may move you over.

Thank you very much in advance

A:unable to open links on desktop

Hello itay112

I think your computer has an infection and it is going to be hard to fix if you cannot run any .reg or .exe files

Go here and download
Exe file association fix
Reg file association fix
LNK (Shortcut) file association fix

Please read the red NOTE at the top as it applies to you

I hope this will let you open these file extensions. Do not reboot until your system has been cleaned.

Now you will need help from our special forum for cleaning our virus etc.

Please read this article; "Having problems with spyware and pop-ups? - First Steps"; follow the instructions very carefully; then, post all the requested logs and information; as instructed, in the HiJackThis Log Help Forum
Please ensure that you create a new thread in the HiJackThis Log Help Forum; not back here in this one.

When carrying out The 5 Steps, if you cannot complete any of them for whatever reason, just continue on with the next one until they are all completed.
However,it is extremely important to make mention of the fact that you could not complete any of the steps in your post to The HJT Help Forum; where an Analyst will assist you with other workarounds.

Don`t try to fix this yourself as you could do damage and lose all access to your system

Please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are usually very busy; one of them will answer your request as soon as they can.

Good Luck

This problem has been going on for a while. I can't open certain links with javascripting. Some work fine. This usually happens after I shut off my computer or after I run a virus scan.

Today I hit a search button on a site and this is what I got:

javascript:_doPostBack('ctl00$cphC$MainSearch$btnSearch',")

The page doesn't go anywhere. Refreshing doesn't work, I can't open a new tab or window.

I checked internet options and my scripts are enabled, I downloaded the microsoft script 5.7 didn't work, java sun worked for one night but the computer got shut off and same thing the next day...problems with javascript.

The one thing I've noticed is it usually resolves itself after a few days but once anything shuts off or it's scanned the problem returns.

Could it be a cookie problem or something else. I'm at the end of my rope here and I've found nothing that works.

Any ideas?

Hello all, hopefully I can find some help here with what seems to be an issue not isolated to myself. I've read over the forum rules and guidelines, so hopefully I can provide useful information to help get this problem solved.Basically, my browser will open random tabs and go to random web sites. Also, after doing a Google search and clicking a link...it will often redirect me to some random site instead. I have noticed this is only when I click a link, because typing a URL in never fails me or gets the redirection. Browser is running pretty slow as well...whole computer seems to be running a lot slower with processes eating a lot more resources than usual.I also get notices from Norton every so often that an attack from a particular IP address was performed on my PC...many times it is the same IP address with the last digits a couple off (I traced one to Norway online).I'd call myself a power user when it comes to PC knowledge (ironically my degree is in MIS but I went into sales, ha) and I've tried many things to fix it...to no avail.OS: Windows XP SP2VP: Norton Security Suite 4 (was AVG until I felt it may not be secure enough)Have tried:HijackThis (use this often to make sure all is okay)Malwarebytes (used once)Ad-AwareBasic Norton ScansDDS Log:QUOTEQUOTEDDS (Ver_10-03-17.01) - NTFSx86 Run by Kennedy at 16:59:03.12 on Fri 07/23/2010Internet Explorer: 6.0.2900.2180 BrowserJavaVersion: 1.6.0_18Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.2.1252.1.1033.18.511.31... I'm not really sure whats changed..and i've pretty much gathered its not just one program being buggy..but heres the deal:

Yahoo Instant messenger, it has the link to your email inbox..which opens a web browser. I personally prefer firefox, and both ff and IE7 are installed, and both open flawlessly with add-ons, and no errors. Also, MyspaceIM has the links in that particular program to open your home page, inbox, and a couple others that bring up a browser window. I even have a satellite forums' file-downloading software, which opens directly to a download of a file IF its available, but is also a browser window..all do nothing when clicked. Clicking on them to open the internet browser doesnt return errors..it just does nothing. Running task manager doesnt show that the web browser is running, and just not opening. It just doesnt open at all. Any ideas/hints to fix would be greatly appreciated.

If anyone can help, please keep the instruction very simple, just like me...

Hi Useless1,

Can you provide a little more information to help me/someone troubleshoot?

Firstly, I am presuming you mean you are running IE10 (where you state Windows 10 in your subject field)?

Secondly, what type of e-mail account are you experiencing this problem with? Is it a Yahoo, Gmail or similar? Or is it Microsoft Outlook Web Access (most likely your work e-mails through an address given to you by your IT team)?

That will help me understand the issue a little better and maybe even replicate.

I could sure use some help. I have a 4 month Dell Studio Desktop with "Vista Premium Home Edition". It's a 32 bit. This last 2 weeks whenever I receive an E Mail with a Link, it will not open. However, it will open as long as I have "Internet Explorer" 7 SP1. open and minimized. I tried going to IE 8. It did not solve the problem. I am able to open attachments.

Since it was under warranty, I contacted "Dell". The Tech got on Remotely and tried resetting my Defaults. He could not fix the problem.
He then says it is not a "Hardware Problem" but a "Software Problem". He gave me a phone number to call and said I would be charged a fee for the software problem. I was going to call but I could see being charged for it and the Tech not being able to fix it.
Any help would surely be appreciated. Thanks,
ptfitzy

Hello:

I lost my first post so I hope this is not redundant; I am unable to open embedded links in my email. When I click on a link "My Documents" opens; in the description box it says "Executable Files." This is the same with any link outside of the net.

While on line I am able to open links and go to websites. I have tried everything I know (which is not much). I will need your patience with clear, easy to follow instructions.

My computer information:

OS: Windows XP Professional
Email: Outlook Express, Explorer 6
Ram: 1 Gig
HD: 120 mirrored (240 total)

Please help, this is really frustrating...

Thank you very much,
Michael105

When i click on a link it doesnt take me to that webpage cos the address in the address bar automatically starts with some http://%22 ... i then have to retype the whole address again. This is only when i click on links especially the ones i receive on yahoo messenger or yahoo mail or other emails and not when i type the address directly in the address bar.

I have been cleared by 'HijackThis Log Help' and they have asked me to post my query here.

I am running Outlook 2007 on Windows Vista Home Premium. I have been using it for at least a year with no problems. Suddenly I am unable to open any link from Outlook. I get an error message "The operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator". I have no problem in copying the link and opening it in my browser. Please help.

drewstrachan,

Welcome to TSG!

In Outlook, go to Actions > Junk E-mail > Junk E-mail Options

In the Options tab make sure the Disable links and other functionality in phishing messages box is unchecked.

I keep Internet Explorer as reserve browser because some government web sites only work with it.

Now I just fresh reinstalled Windows 7 x64 and Internet Explorer 11 and was playing with adding plugins like Flash Player etc. etc.
I used the browser for only a few minutes then suddenly it started acting crazy.
I type the address in the bar, the web page opens for a second then it redirects to a blank page so I'm not able to go anywhere.
Please check the screen shots.

PS: I struggled with the previous Windows installation because the upgrade from IE8 to IE9 corrupted the system, not I fresh installed Windows and again Internet Explorer is giving problems, how stupid is that and what Micro$oft is doing!!!
