uk extended keyboard: hotkey for tilda's characters not working

Q: uk extended keyboard: hotkey for tilda's characters not working

I've got a laptop, sony fz21e, which did come with Vista installed.
Now that windows 7 has been around for a while, my friend has maanged to install it on the laptop, since it can use vista drivers.
Ive added uk extended keyboard to the standard list (which was uk keyboard and some other thingy I dont know). I also set default keyboard to extended.
Now if I want to do a letter with a circumflexy, i type ALTGR+ 6, let go of all keys, then press the required letter. this works.

But for some reason, tilde doesnt work (did in Vista). Normally, AltGr + # (tilde is on # key) followed by required letter. Tried using shift, just in case, but no joy.
Tilde works fine by itself (ie shift #)

OK Thanking you all for Any and all ideas

Preferred Solution: uk extended keyboard: hotkey for tilda's characters not working

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

When all else fails, all symbols have ASCII codes that can be looked up - then just use the alt key plus the numeric code for the symbol u want. Here is a link (but there are many)..... http://www.ascii-code.com/ hope this of help. I'm sure you can then setup a rarely used key as a hot key, I just can't remember how to do that - LOL.

What is it you are trying to do with the tilda? It is possible that you need use the fn or shift keys.

A:some key characters are not working on my keyboard

If its a desktop, then simply replace the keyboard. You can get keyboards from most online retailers nowadays, and some are very cheap!!

If youve tried that, move it to a different port (if its USB).

Recently copied some files (photos and videos) from phone (Android) to laptop (win7) to USB HD (WD passport) to desktop (Win7).
All the files have appropriate sizes, but attempting to open any of them gives a message that they are corrupted.  They all have a string appended to their extensions of space, vertically centered dot, space.
Removing the extra characters from the extensions does not fix the problem.  Does anyone know of a cause, or more importantly, fix for the situation?

A:Corrupted files with extended characters appended to extension

What is the format of these files?
Have you tried sending these to your e-mail client?

Hi, I have recently purchased a HP Pavilion dv6-3016ax laptop. It works great, but my gripe is the 'media' hotkey button down the left hand side doesn't work (see attached image). It used to work sporadically but, I just ignored it. I then changed the registry entry for it to open iTunes, instead of HP's horrid Media Smart Software. I was unsuccessful and then changed it back. But now it just doesn't do anything. I figure that I may have mucked something up in the registry but, when I set the calculator button to open up iTunes it works fine, so I don't think it's my registry coding.

I would either like to test the key to see if it is the key that is faulty, or have my registry coding corrected.

Any help would be appreciated.

Every single key I press is now as if i was holding ctrl + shift, or ctrl + alt or something.

Example : I hit N, chrome opens a new window. P = Print. T = New tab. (It's not just chrome).

Previously the letter B would open windows media player, but since then I hit ctrl + shift a bunch of times and now every ******* key I press does something and does not type.

Update : I hit Shift + Ctrl a bunch of times, and now every key works except B, 1, 2, and Ctrl. (possibly more)

This is really really annoying so if there's any fix anyone can think of that would be great. I'm on Windows 7, I've restarted and unplugged the keyboard a ton of times, I'm fairly sure it isn't a hardware issue, but even if it was I don't have another keyboard.

Edit : It's not a laptop, and no keys are jammed.

Hi .I am a new bie. A:My hotkey on keyboard should open www.yahoomail.com

You question isn't "dumbo" if you don't know the answer. You stated you don't want to use any software, but unfortunately you will have to in order to change the hotkey so it will open up to yahoo mail. Go to the following page, make your selections.http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download...spx?category=MKClick GO.If there is download for your keyboard, download it, then install. After installation, open up the program. You should see a Key Settings tab.Click that tab. You'll see a list, choose the email key name, highlight it.Next click on Configure, change, or something similar. Do you see Custom? If so, choose the setting to Start program, web page, file (you may see something similar if not the exact thing I listed)Click NEXT, enter the path in the box. In your case it would be the url for yahoo mail.Click FINISH. Try the email key to see if yahoo opens up.edited to include link

I had a client today that has an Sk2960 keyboard that has some hotkeys on the side for opening email and a search window.
Well, when you click the button it opens a browser that goes to an Apache Tomcat elementerror. I've done a bunch of research, trying to find how to get these keys back to working condition. I'm aware the keyboard is very outdated, but he's an older gentleman who's not willing to upgrade right now.
The computer is a HP Vista 64bit. He had taken it to a local computer shop that is known for messing everything up, and that's when the problems started to happen. I reverted back to a farther recovery checkpoint also, and had no effect.
There is a post on here from 2009, I did the solution, which was setting Outloot or Hotmail Email to Default in the Default programs. It had no effect.

This has been happening for years, but I never figured out what it is, but now this is the third time in a week, and this time it doesn't go away with a reboot so I want to know exactly what's up.

Every so often, I don't know if it is a hotkey I press or a series of keys, but all of a sudden my keyboard will function differently, as will my mouse. The mouse will act as if the CONTROL button the keyboard is pressed, even when it is not, so the left mouse button acts as a "select" button instead of action, and the keys on the keyboard function as hotkeys for something, some do nothing, others act as if the control button is pushed down always (V for example will "paste", and so on), it is very annoying.

So far, the only way to get rid of it is I go to SERVICES and look for anything that has to do with keys and stop that service, then press control and shift like 10 times each in fury and somehow it returns everything to normal.

Please, any help is appreciated, if I knew what this was I may even have a use for it, but it happens at the worst moments and I panic cuz I never know how long before I will get it back to normal.

(before I wrote this message, it took me 10 mins to get the keyboard back including a few restarts, and naturally I couldn't write this message when it was all screwed up, even if I wanted to use the onscreen keyboard and type with the mouse it wouldn't work because the mouse is also affected)

Thank you.

I have a Logitech Y-ST39 Internet keyboard that works fine; it has seven assigned function buttons across the top of the board (Search, Files, E-Mail, WWW, Mute, - and + volume) but I've noticed that the one of them, WWW, keeps giving me the "Files" function instead of the Internet.
I've successfully re-set this several times in the Control Panel, so that all works fine, but, on rebooting, the same problem returns. as if I'd made no correction at all.
I have Windows XP Home Edition, and all other hardware (and software) works fine.
Is there something I can activate to permanently set the changes I make?
Maybe Control Panel/ keyboard is not the right place to set changes...
The keyboard came with the PC and doesn't have a separate software CD so I've unplugged and re-plugged so that it detects and installs the hardware drivers just to make sure they're the right ones, but to no avail. Everything else on the keyboard works well.

A:Logitech Keyboard hotkey settings change after reboot

By using a bit of lateral thinking, I have found a solution to this baffling problem, though not a cause for it.
When the WWW button opens Files, the path is C:\Windows\Program Files\Internet where there are some files associated with my ISP, not currently in use. By moving this folder into another (Internet Explorer), the WWW button can no longer find the folder it seeks, so its function has apparently reverted to opening the web browser as it should do.
Why it started opening files in the first place is still a mystery.

Okay so ive just got a Logitech Cordless Desktop EX110, and the keyboard (like most moderately priced keyboards) has numerous 'hot-keys' (like music controls, email button, internet button, calc button etc.)

On the side of my keyboard is two hot keys, a 'back' button and a 'close window' button. Now in the Logitech SetPoint software it is possible to customize this buttons function. So i want to make it a 'show desktop' button.

Here's the problem, the SetPoint software is a bit restricted and gives me these (function) choices:
Default Task (in this case, close window)
Open Web Page
Launch Program
Open File
Open Folder
Show Custom Menu
Keystroke Assignment
Do Nothing
So, first of all i tried Keystroke Assignment. Well that would work, just there is only one keyboard short cut i know to show desktop (windows key & D). But this program only takes short cuts that use alpha-numeric keys, Alt or CTRL keys (or in comination, like CTRL+ALT+R) - not the windows key.

So heres my first question: Are there any OTHER keyboard shortcuts to show the desktop? Can i make a new keyboard shortcut?

But before i started asking that question i thought well ill try 'Open Program'. Found on the Microsoft website the script for Show Dekstop.scf, got that all ready. Targeted the file in SetPoint, no it doesnt work - SetPoint's 'Open Program' only works with executables (exe).

Hi - I'm using Vista Business.

A closed friend of mine brought a Win8 laptop (Acer) last week. She ran into 2 problems which I have some problems helping her to resolve.

1/ The laptop (Win8) was setup using her Microsoft account which used her email account... She has an existing skype account using her gmail address. When she tried to access skype on the new computer, preinstall skype wants her to merge the existing skype (with gmail) account with her Microsoft account (which uses her ISP email address). She does not want to do that and wants her existing gmail skype account. Is the only way out is to uninstall the preinstalled skype in the new laptop and reinstall skype again? This way, she can use the existing skype account associated with her gmail.

2/ On the new laptop, the special characters like ~, !, @, #. $. %. ^ (i.e. those keys with dual characters) are stuck at some strange characters which she cannot get out of. These keys when strike display those funny European characters. (My friend is in Canada and when she setup her laptop, she chose English Canada). Is the keyboard defective or the language chosen during setup was incorrect? Note, when I remote in, the control panel clearly stated the language used is English Canada.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, this is my first post to this forum. I am The Excel Addict. I have a website http://www.TheExcelAddict.com where I share tips and tricks for using Microsoft Excel. But sometimes, outside of Excel I need to go looking for HELP.For the past couple of months my computer has been acting strange. When I am typing away, it can happen in any program (Outlook, Excel, Word, TextPad, etc...), everything is working fine, but then my keyboard starts producing odd characters. For example, when I try to type a " (double quote), I get a blank, when I type a greater than sign (>) I get an apostrophe (') and most other non-alphanumeric characters result in the same behavior. If I close the program and reopen it, everything works OK for a while (maybe 10-15 minutes) and then the strange characters start appearing again when I type. I restart the program, and everything will work fine for another little while. It is very difficult to get anything done on my computer that requires typing. Updating my website is a nightmare. So far I've resisted smashing my computer to bits. Has any one else experienced this problem? Any suggestions?I am using WinXP Professional and have McAffe antivirus running. The Excel Addict

Either you are in a Non-US English location and have the US layout, or vice-versa
US Shift+2 is @
UK Shift+2 is "

Control Panel | Language and Regional Options
On Regional tab, select the correct language for your location.
Click the Languages tab, then click the Details... button
Select the correct Default input language. This should also install the correct keyboard
Under Installed services, if the incorrect keyboard is shown, click the Add... button
Select the language and layout, and click OK
You can remove the other keyboard if needed. Helps to keep it from getting switched back accidentally.

I would like to tell me please if you think it is something to do with my pc or windows, or it is the keyboard's fault and i should have it replaced.

Hi try the keyboard on another computer or try another keyboard on your computer that should tell you if it's the keyboard or the computer.

Firstly can I apologise if this thread is in the wrong place. The problem I am having is driving me mad, and while I don't think it's a hardware issue, I had no idea where else on this site to post.

Now to business...

My PC seems to be typing random numbers whenever any text box is selected in any program or website. Please note it is a PC, not a Laptop. All the solutions I have found so far relate to the touch pad on Laptops but that can't be the issue here.

When I unplug the keyboard the PC continues to type random numbers. On restarting the PC the problem goes away for a while, but soon raises it's ugly head again. Sometimes the issue gets even more bizarre and extreme whereby pressing keys on the keyboard will launch programs. For instance, the other day I pressed "S" and the PC loaded Windows Media Player!

I have searched and searched for answers, trying everything I can think of, but the results from Google tend to be unhelpful when you type in things like "Help, my keyboard's gone loopy" or "keyboard random characters". Incidentally, it's favourite character to type is the number "8".

The closest thing I came to a solution was someone suggesting that somewhere deep within the PC virtual keys are getting stuck...the PC thinks I'm holding down the "8" key for example. Sadly I couldn't verify this and have no idea how to solve it!

The PC in question is rather *ahem* "basic... Read more

A:Random Characters Typed by Keyboard

It almost sounds like your Accessibility onscreen keyboard has been messed with. Or specfic hotkeys have been allocated to do something and have gone awry. It's an issue within the PC and you might have to suggest a repair to the particular system to right the problem. Jazz

Hello all, great forum, Ive learnt a lot already

I know enough about computers to log on and get around in word and e mail but thats where my skill ends!

My problem is that mainly when Im in email Im typing but some of the characters wont print on the screen. I know 100% that Ive hit the letter but it doesnt show and the e mail looks like goobledegook. It sometimes happens at other times - like now - but mostly in mail. I use hotmail.

My computer details are in my profile. Dell have changed the laptop keyboard but its still happening. The computer is now 2 years old and well out of any warranty.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Many Thanks

My keyboard is typing correctly in Word but types nonsense when I type in either a browser window or in my email. If I type a web address in Chrome, Explorer or Firefox it comes out as random letters, symbols and numbers and the same if I try to type an email in yahoo or gmail. As I say, it is fine typing in Word. Any ideas gratefully received.

PS I have been into Control Panel and made sure regional settings and keyboard setting are for English (UK)
