Modem Direct Connection Good - Router Poor

Q: Modem Direct Connection Good - Router Poor

Within the last week I've been getting very slow speeds through my Asus RT-AC66U when connected to either ethernet or wireless on Windows 10 devices. I'm usually seeing speeds over 20 mbps up to 25. Now the speeds are around 1-2 mbps, or less. Uploads are in the low 10ths of a mbps.
To troubleshoot I connected my laptop directly to the Motorola SB6121 modem via ethernet cable and the speeds were 20-25 mbps as expected. When I connected modem back to the AC66U I get 1-2 mbps. I reset the Asus router and restarted modem-then router- then laptop. Result = same poor speeds. Today I connected a spare Linksys 4200V2 to the modem and ethernet to my laptop and get the same poor speeds 1-2 mbps.
The equipment chains is: Internet to modem - modem to router - router to PC and to an ethernet switch feeding numerous devices. The router also wirelessly feeds phones, tablets and a couple streaming boxes.
The curious thing here is that my laptop with ethernet and my wife's with wireless both running Windows 10 are very slow. My Tablet running Android (CM 12.1, 5.0 ghz connection) wirelessly from the modem is testing at 24 mbps.
I'm at the end of my troubleshooting skills with this problem. The routers have the latest firmware. The Asus does have the Merlin software on it and has worked flawlessly in the past. Lastly, I did change the modem to router cable and tested on a modem to laptop and both cables are fine.
Has Microsoft made changes with the last Windows 10 update that has impacted network settings? Does anyone have any ideas about what I can do to resolve?
Help is welcome.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My ISP is Comcast and I am subscribed to a 12mbps download and a 2.5mbps upload. When I am directly connected to my modem I get around 13-30mbps (Yeah I know, I get more than what I pay for!)
However, when downloading files through my router my max download speed is 750-770 kb/s.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium x64.

I have tried this with a Linksys WRT320N and a Netgear RangeMAX (forget model) and SAME RESULTS!!!!

I am very familiar with the menus of both.

So, is there anything I can do to unlock the true potential of my speed through my router/s?

*Added note: I have tested my router via ethernet and wireless. Same performance.

I know 750 kb/s isn't bad. In fact it is perfectly liveable.

Weird note: via speedtest.net the router and modem get the same speed. But, when I try downloading via P2P, Steam, random file sharing website; the modem outperforms every time.

Thanks for the help! My first post on techguy.org!

When I try connecting my PC to my cable modem via Ethernet cable there is no internet access, but it does say its connected ( windows xp and 7...2 different PCs). But when I plug in my wireless router directly to the cable modem, I get internet access, what gives? I did reset everything and this problem still occurs. I'm not a total noob when it comes to networking, but this is baffling! I did troubleshooting over the internet, no help at all

(btw for folks who know about ps3...When my ps3 is directly connected to the cable modem I get NAT type 1, and online play works flawless. yet why wouldn't doesn't the internet work on my pc?)

As long as my PC is connected to my dsl modem directly, I have Internet access. As soon as I try inserting a router into the mix, I lose all Internet connection.

I initially thought something had gone wrong with my router; so, I purchased a new one and still I am receiving the same problem. I have done numerous power cycles and tried reconnecting everything was connected properly: pc>router>modem>phone line.

I deactivated my firewall thinking that was the problem, but nothing changed.

I am not sure what else to try. I guess the plus side is that I do have access to the Internet, but would love to get the router working in order to use our laptops and phones and other devices with wifi.

I did perform this task. However, it was performed while I am only connected to my dsl modem and not the router.

so... I made the mistake and had my heat sink cleaned by 'professionals'. I had to bring it back again, b/c I couldn't play any games after they had done that, now I really don't wanna bring it back a third time, b/c when I brought it home yesterday I was unable to connect to the internet.
I thought it might be the router since it has been giving troubles for a while now, but a house mate of mine had no problem connecting to the Internet with her phone.
The problem that I have is that I don't get a connection at all and when I sat right next to the router yesterday I had exactly 1 bar in the connection thingy. I would also like to mention that I have had 0 experience with the type of router I currently have, it is connected with a DSL cable and I have only seen those way back in the day when I had 0 experience with computers!
I checked my Event Log and the only thing that keeps showing up is a 7x079 error telling me that the dhcp couldn't give me an ip adress (i think it was, I'm not on my computer right now).
Does anyone know
a) how my wifi adapter could have been destroyed while cleaning a heat sink and reapplying thermal past and
b) how to fix it? What do you need to know to help me?

If I'm slow with answering I want to apologize in advance but I can only get online when I'm at work and I have tomorrow off!

After doing a bit of research here is a couple of things I have tried and didn't work:

1. reset TCP/IP
2. set the wwan autoconfig service to start automatically
3. restored my system to a previous setting from last week
4. unchecked the ipv6 box in my adapter properties

A friend suggested that they might have damaged the adapter if they cleaned the heatsink with high speed air, can that actually happen?

Hi all

I recently had a problem with the internet connection in our office. During the process I connected to the cable modem directly and so did one of my collegues. Since then both our computers are taking ages (3-4mins) to boot. It gets past the welcome screen and then hangs with no activity light flashing for about 3 mins then starts to boot into the desktop. Once fully booteed I have no problems.

Anyone had a similar exprerience? If so any solutions!!!

just got my DSL line connected this week. having trouble with connections using my office laptop (os --windows NT). when i connect direct from the modem i always get "unable to resolve ur IP address ..." message. pls note my laptop is set up as such, i need to go thru VPN everytime i need to connect either thru dial up or DSL. laptop is configured that by my employer that way for security purposes. and since i'm not the administrator i can not install any new drivers (i.e., dialer) to recognize the modem. do i need a router? was able to connect from friends' houses with routers.

it works fine with my other PC (os --windows XP)

do i need one or will a direct crossover connection do the job?

also thinking of a direct crossover connection from my XP PC to my NT notebook. is this possible? got this from XP help & support center:

The Network Setup Wizard can only be run on computers running Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional, or Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).

appreciate simple and detailed steps not that computer savy. thanks.

yes you can connect via a crossover cable -
i have had NT4SP3 - win98 - win2k and winXp all working with a crossover connection

I have an Apple Macbook with the Tiger OS and have previously configured a D-Link router for wireless access. The router was cofigured when I was using a cable internet connection, so the cable modem was between the router and the cable connection.

I now have a direct network connection through my university (i.e., no cable or DSL modem). I have been unable to get the wired or wireless internet connection to work with the router. I can connect my Mackbook directly to the ethernet network connection and get access to the internet. However, when I try to connect the router between the computer and the direct network connection, the internet won't work.

As you can guess I am not a computer wiz and am a novice using wireless routers. Can anyone advise me on how to successfully connect my wireless router between my direct network connection and the Mackbook? Also, if there is a better section of the forum where I should be posting this thread, please let me know that. Thanks.

Hi there, this is my first post, but i've had this problem for a while

im running a basic wireless connection throughout my house, however my pc is plugged directly to belkin router.
fairly often (and more so when i'm connected) the internet sort of dies, the little connection image in the corner goes blank, features such as msn will sign out and we need to flick the power to modem/router on and off.

that aside (an annoying, but manageable problem) the connection will often not work sporadically while using the net - however this issue lets msn and other programs run, just stops firefox (giving me errors like 'server not found', 'server timed out' etc etc)
At any point in time if i repair the connection it stops at clearing net bt and says the action could not be completed.

was wondering if these problems are linked, but if not, i would like to be able to clear net bt first, as this may be a clue to the other problems.

thanks for any advice

Most times the download/upload speed is a function of your ISP, not the router as most are about the same except they different options.

What speed does your isp say they provide? Also what isp are you using?

Hello all, first let me start by saying i am no expert in networking and my english is not perfect.

I'll keep this as simple as i can with the way i describe it. I have been using a router for a couple of years for my internet connection and it latetly it has given me problems, random dc,random reset. I now wish to go back to a direct cable connection in my PC,and stop using the router.

However,if i plug it in the cable i do not have internet connection. I have tried to setup the IP and DNS adress to obtain it automatically ,i have typed them in manually and still it won't work.

The main things it keeps telling me when i run the Troubleshoot tool are :

- The Default Gateway is not available
- Windows can't communicate with the device or resource ( primary DNS server )

If you require any more info and want to give me a hand with fixing this info, please ask. Thanks for your time.

Currently my housemate and I are having problems with our internet connection. We are sharing our broadband connection across two computers by both directly connecting to a router. The problem is as such, my housemate can safely connect to the router and his internet functions as normal. However, when I turn my computer on and try to establish an internet connection, the connection fails after a minute or so. My housemates connection also dies when my one does. So by attempting to connect to the internet, i basically cause both connections to crash. Also, when i turn my computer on, the internet will work for a brief moment (perhaps one minute) before it dies. Bascially i have time to visit one or two internet sites before it craps itself.

Neither of us have much understanding of what is going on. We both believe it may be a software issue with my computer which is causing the problem (ie spyware or some kind of virus). Given that i am essentially operating without a stable connection i cannot update my adaware definitions or the likes. Thus far all i have done is run an adaware check which found nothing malicious. My computer operates windows XP.

Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Hoping someone can help.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop running Windows XP with a wireless connection to a broadband router.

Several weeks ago my laptop started dropping the internet connection randomly (I'm alos unabel to access email when this happens).

My wireless network icon in my toolbar shows the connection as 'Excellent' but for some reason both Internet and Email is not available. The only way to fix the problem has been to restart my laptop which is very frustrating.

I've noticed that this also happens randomly when I'm at home (using different wireless broadband modem) so I think the issue is my laptop not the 2 x routers/modems.

I'm running NOD32 for security as well (but have been for 4 years now with no problems till now).

Please help.

I need a direct connection to the internet. A connection straight from the modem to the computer with no routers involved. I am able to connect to the internet using my router (wired, not wireless). However if I try to connect directly to the internet through the modem it doesn't work. I have a broadband connection, always running. I don't understand the problem. Why would connecting through a router work but a direct connection fail? I tried power cycling the modem about 10 times and it's not working. Yet it will connect through the router every time without fail. Is there some kind of configuration I need to change? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm running windows xp and my ISP is comcast.

For work I was given a modem, which they wanted me to hook up directly to my home internet. However, I live in a town home and do not have direct access to it. Instead I have to use a port that I have in my wall. When I plug my modem into the wall the VPN does not light on the modem, which I assume is because I have blocked access as we need to register all our devices using the MAC address. The modem I have is a Cisco 881. Is there any way to find the MAC address if not listed on the device itself?

I just set up a two computer wireless LAN. One machine running WinME is wired to the router, the other W2K machine is wireless about 100 feet away.

Everything works well, I can shut both machines down and restart and it all still works.

However, after shutting down the machines over night and restarting in the morning, the router won't respond. I can't access the router with IE. If I shut down both the modem and router and the machines and reboot the modem then router then the machines it'll work.

On all the other networks I've dealt with, the modems and routers are always left on.

What should I be checking here? Up till now I've never had any problems with this type of setup.

The modem is a Qwest issue Actiontec GT701 while the router is a Linksys wireless 11MB.

A:DSL modem/router connection

It would be helpful to determine if the problem is with the modem or the router.

Can you disconnect the router and connect directly to the modem.
Then leave that computer on overnight.

If there are still problems it would point to the modem.
Otherwise I would start suspecting the router.

Tried searching for a solution but couldn't find anything specific enough to my issue.

Any help is greatly appreciated; wired network connections.

As of right now, I am able to connect to the internet but only directly from my modem to my main desktop. When I have the router connected... there is no network connection on anything connected to router, not even my main desktop. I then started to see if other devices such as PS3 and laptop would work connected directly to modem. No connection can be made; however, everything shows pc activity. The only connection i get to work is when my main desktop is connected directly to the modem. I believe it is a network settings issue, involving router and/or modem. I've tried doing the whole reset router/modem/pc, and disconnecting reconnecting cables solutions but nothing.

Thanks again for any responses and help.

I can connect to the internet just fine if I run my modem straight to my computer. If I try to run it through my router, however, I can't get a connection. The internet light on the router does not light up and shows no signs of connection. The DHCP renewal doesn't do anything, either. I have tried multiple 'solutions' and am completely stumped. I have power cycled many, many times and reset the router to factory settings as well. I have tried cloning the mac address to match the computer and done all that I can (as far as my knowledge reaches). The tech support 'warranty' is also outdated, so there are no other options except for paying a ridiculous amount of money to talk to somebody. As such, any help on this matter would be GREATLY appreciated! I just got a new modem yesterday and that is when it stopped working through the router. This problem occurs with two different routers (both of which worked previously) so I don't think anything is faulty.

The modem is an ARRIS TM602G and the router is a Linksys WRT54G v.3

Hi everyone.

I work as a tech consultant, and I am stumped on this one.

I am working at a clients house. She has purchased DSL sevice though a hole-in-the-wall company called superpa.net.

They have given me particular parameters to make the computer connect to their POS system.

Set IP Address:
Set Default Gateway:
Subnet Mask:
Preferred DNS Server: alternate
Well that is all fine a good and the computer connects just great. But my client just bought a new laptop and wants wireless. Wireless is simple, well it should be.

I got her a basic Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router. Nothing Fancy.

Now obviously, the router must use the same setting as the computer. So I went in to the Config, and made it a static ip with all of the listed above. I changed the computer back to the auto obtain ip address and dns server, but I HAVE NOTHING!

The modem shows a conncetion to the router, and her computer shows a connection the router, but there is NO activity between the modem and router. No activity=No Internet
I called Linksys, they told me to contact my ISP, then called Superpa.net, they said they dont do any support for wireless, only for one hardlined computer. They would sent someone out to fix it $200/service call + $60/hour... I said forget it.

Anyone with any suggestions or solutions... I would be much abliged!!!!

I trust that you power cycled the modem when switching from computer to router.

If the Linksys LAN defaults to 192.168.1.x, change it to 192.168.0.x.

EDIT: and clone the computer's MAC address to the router.

I am having a confusing and frustrating problem, my internet connection is dropping every half hour at least (sometimes more depending on my internet activity). This connection loss is happening when my modem resets and I have no idea why it's resetting. SBC sent me a Westell Proline F90-610025-06 modem/router for my new DSL account. It works fine on one computer, but when I connected it to a second computer through a Linksys switch (ethernet cables), the second computer was not able to obtain a different local IP number from the Westell. Both computers show a address conflict error when they are both on. I pushed the buttons in the advanced section of the Westell menu, but could not find any way to expand the range of IP addresses available. The only option I could find was to change the lease time on IP addresses, or switch from PPPoE to PPPoA. I pushed repair connection in the computer LAN menu, but the computer was not able to get a different IP address. The Westell just kept giving both computers the same IP. This is my first broadband connection, so I am an amateur on connecting them.

Windows XP SP2 I tried powering everything down, and restarting in this order: Westell, Linksys, computers It didn't help. Manually inputting a different IP address on one computer's LAN connection didn't do anything either. How do I get the Westell to give different local IP addresses to different computers?

For the past two weeks I keep getting the error message of "Default Gateway is not available," only way to temporarily fix it has been to restart the computer each time. The intervals of the net crashes can range from 3-7 hours of connect time to even just five minutes after fixing the issue. I've called my ISP (Charter Communications) and they claim it is not an issue on their end and must be with my computer. The Computer was bought in Nov. 2011 and is a Gateway DX4860. Any help out there would be much appreciated.

I hope I'm posting this in the right category...
In any case, to begin, I just want to let whoever reads this know that I am definitely not the most experienced tech guy out there. A technician is supposed to come Sunday morning to help try and figure out this problem, but I figured I'd post it here and see what kinds of responses I receive.

A few days ago, I returned from a vacation to find that my old modem, a Motorola, had burnt out/died/lost power; I'm not sure. So we (my father and I) purchased through the recommendation of a Cox representative a relatively new 2 in 1 modem/router unit called the Gateway.

The wired connection, which we use for the desktop, has been perfectly fine. My laptop on the other hand, which I use wirelessly, might as well have no connection at all. Initially, it had no problem connecting to the new unit. I brought up my homepage, which came up deceptively quick, and told the technician that all appeared to be working normally. However, after going through some other websites, I found that it was loading pages/videos EXTREMELY slowly. After a while I did a speedtest, and after many trials I'm finding my average download to be about 1 Mbps, and upload to either be higher (?) at about 1.4 Mbps or unreadable. It should be noted that with the package we have, we should be getting about 30 down and 3 up.

My father and I talked with a couple Cox representatives on the phone, but they couldn't decipher the problem. There is ... Read more

Hello, I think I'm experiencing a NAT networking problem, as most games I play complain that my NAT is moderate, or sometimes strict. I've researched this and found out it may be a Double NAT problem.

I've also researched two solutions for this: Disable NAT and DCHP on either the modem or router, or set up a PPPoE connection between the two. Can someone tell me which one is the easiest to do and how to do it?

Router: Linksys E3200 w/ Cisco

Modem: Motorola SB5102

Other Info: This IS a broadband connection, and I believe it is a DSL or Cable setup. I also know how to access the router settings, and how to disable NAT and DCHP. However, I do not know how to connect to the modem (I do know the default IP for it) and don't know how to perform a PPPoE connection, as this would be my first time.

A:Setting up a PPPoE connection between router & modem

PPPoE is for DSL connections... Go to the router and modem websites and download the instructions from there. It will explain how to connect and access the router

About every 1-2 weeks my router loses the connection to the internet via cable modem. This has happened with 2 different cable modems (Netgear CM212 and Motorola Surfboard 5100) and also with 2 different routers (Netgear 614 and D-Link DI-524). When this happens the thing that usually fixes it is unplugging the router for several minutes and then plugging it back in again. I have Windows XP set to automatically detect the internet connection, and the router is set to use DHCP. Sometimes I also have to bypass the router and then put it back (so this could be partially a Windows problem?). Is there any way I can configure the router so it doesn't keep losing the internet connection? I have Comcast cable modem service.

Thank you.

I have this problem with my home wireless network for quite sometime. I am using cable broadband with the motorola modem and aztech router.

The problem is that my internet connection drops suddenly everyday... I will power off my modem and router, restart it but still cannot get internet access. after a few tries, it might come back...

I have tested my router at my friend's place and it is working fine. So i thought it's the modem problem, so i also went to test the modem at my friend's place and it's working fine too. I even bought new ethernet cable.

I do not know much about hardwares and wireless networking. I do hope I can find the problem and get it solved soon...

would you post the following tests when the internet is working OK, and then repeat ALL the tests when the internet disconnects.
Make sure you also indicate on the reply which tests are for what condition.

As you are connected by wireless, please include the xirrus screen shots for both conditions - see how below.

Please post back here the make and exact model of the router and the make and exact model of the modem.

Please make a note of the status of the lights on the modem and on the router when working normally - post that light status here.

After trouble shooting on my own, I'm stuck. My current situation is that I have a Netopia (Cayman 3346) DSL modem-router (not wireless) that is connected to a (Linksys E100) wireless router. I currently run a small business that has two other computers connected through the Linksys router and are properly configured on the network.

Problems, Thursday night was the last time I could connect using the wireless connection. I cannot connect wirelessly now, but I can connect through the Netopia modem-router.

Manual Troubleshooting included:

-CMD for proper release/renew (IP shows 192.)
-Hard reset both modem and router.
-Manually configured the Linksys router.
-Called Netopia and manually configured modem-router successfully
-Again, computers hard-wired to modem-router will connect.
-Lights on Linksys router are lit and working properly (i.e wifi icon, power, and line 1)

Any ideas? I found in the Netopia settings of the WAN to be configured this way, should I change to IP Address?

Any help would be appreciated as my business is hindered by only having one computer operational.

EDIT: Here is a picture from the Netopia WAN configuration page

I'd like to network two PCs, both running Me and have a broadband connection , probably with Tiscali. I need someadvice on what modem / router I need to get. If I ask a shop or ISP I get slanted information.

I'd like to have the option of possibly changing provider in the future. (I'm aware that AOL seems to need a particular modem, I'd probably never want to sign up with them anyway).

Please can someone recommend either a suitable modem / router or the features and specifications I should be looking for. What does ethernet and 10/100 mean anyway?

Many thanks in advance.

A:Modem / router choice for broadband connection

Depends on your budget and how your system is going to evolve over the next year or two i.e. you could get a modem/router with wired and wireless connection such as those made by Draytek or a more simple single port router such as those supplied by some ISPs and use windows inbuilt software to share the connection [but this requires the main PC on for the others to connect].
There is also the possibility of buying a modem/router with inbuilt hardware firewall which whilst more expensive is a good security feature.
Linksys also make some excellent modem/routers at a good price.
Perhaps a look round the price comparison sites such as www.dealtime.co.uk will help you find the cheapest of those suggested.

What does ethernet and 10/100 mean anywayClick to expand...

It normally just means its 10Mbps and 100Mbps switchable dependent on the speed of the network card attached to it i.e. if the card is only 10Mbps then that port will run at the slower speed.

OK, here's the situation. I have a Dell E1505 laptop with Windows Vista that I use as my main computer. I am connected to the internet with a 2wire2701HG-T router/modem. I just bought a Acer Aspire One D250 with Windows 7 Starter and connected it wirelessly to the network. Now, however, when the Dell is connected to the modem by ethernet, my preferred connection for security, speed, and battery issues, the internet connection on the Acer slows down to nothing and soon disconnects. After a bit, it reconnects, but is still very slow, only to disconnect again. However, when I connect the Dell by wireless, everything works normally. Is this a modem problem, or is it an issue with one of the computers? I must admit, my networking skills don't go beyond being able to set up a network name and password.

We recently had Verizon HiSpeed (speeds up to 768 Kbps) installed with Westell(Model 327W) modem/router connected to our desktop.
When we place cursor over the "Network" connection in lower right of screen (of desktoop) it states:
The Internet (2)
Spreed 10.0 Mbps
Sent 141,926 bytes
Received 921,712 bytes

However, in the laptop, when we place the cursor over the "Network" connection, we see:
Speed 36Mbps
Signal Strength Excellent
Status Connected.

What we would like to know is why does our desktop show SPEED of "10.0 Mbps"

while the laptop shows:
SPEED of "36.0 Mbps?"
(Connection speed on both shows: download 705 kbps; upload 133 kbps.)

Is this something to be very worried/concerned about? We are senior citizens and the speed when we connect to Internet appears to be fine as far as we are concerned.

OK, I'm having some trouble with my DSL connection. Right now it's working, but it's starting to slow down again which means that I'm soon to be disconnected totally. My provider says that nothing is wrong on their end (which I've confirmed with 2 neighbors) so it must be on my end.

My connection starts to work REALLY slowly and then eventually just quits working altogether. My "status" light on my DSL modem/router is completely black, the other lights are green, however, the LAN light is blinking furiously (I don't really know if it's always been that way or not... )

Anyway, I called the "tech support" people at my provider, and they walked me though some steps that seemed to alleviate the problem for now, but I want it stopped permanently!

I put in the "IP address" (shown on the IPconfig command prompt) into firefox's address bar and it pulled up the Zoom information page and I went to the system status portion like I was told to do, but there was NO IP ADDRESS!! NONE!! So we cycled the modem--nothing. We powered down the computers--nothing. I unplugged the ethernet cable from one port and moved it to another--PRESTO!! The internet works again!

I'm not even sure why this worked the way it did, because my laptop is wirelessly connected....why did changing the port of my desktop do anything? Or was it just chance? And how do I keep this from happening? Ideas?? Suggestions?? Anyone??

Hey hey,

My fiance and I are both connected to our speedstream 6520 via ethernet cables. I mainly use my connection to play World of Warcraft, she uses hers for work (inbound customer service). The issue we're having is that when I play WoW while she's working, it disrupts her systems connection to her work server (i guess that's what she's connected to) and she gives me hell for it.

Is there anything that can be done so that we can both use the internet connection without interfering with the others fun/work?

I'm having problems with my internet connection and modem/router. It's an Actiontec gt704wg, which serves as both a modem and wireless router. One computer is connected directly to the router and 2 others use wireless. The connection just randomly cuts off, the internet light goes blank, the dsl light flashes, and then it takes about 15-25 seconds to reconnect. I get tons of static on my phones, and the frequency of disconnecting goes up whenever i get/make a phone call. In addition, when I connect the other computers wirelessly, i get tremendous delays and more disconnections, and it takes several minutes to reconnect. The router's not old, about a year, and I've had no problems with it until recently. I've changed all my dsl phone filters, so I know it's not that. Can anyone help me?

It sounds to me like something wrong with the router or, less likely, wireless interference. Looking at the second one first, do you detect any other wireless networks on your same or close to your channel? Any 2.4Ghz cordless phone?

Next I suggest looking for a firmware update for the router. And my final (at least for now) suggestion is to reset the router to factory default settings and reconfigure.

Just purchased a Linksys WRT54G2 router so my wife can surf indepently in the house. The problem is that in trying to connect with the installation software I cannot find connection instructions. This is because 2 years ago when my daughter was home with her laptop computer we connected a very similar Linksys router. When I insert the CD-ROM to get instructions the software says "it appears you already have a router connected." and since this is the only way to make the connections I have to try and find the proper connection method here. The dsl modem is a Westell 6100.
