Yoga 2 Pro not charging / dies immediately when unplugged

Q: Yoga 2 Pro not charging / dies immediately when unplugged

Hello, I would prefer to contact support directly but I have been unable to find a phone number or email contact. I'm not sure whether this problem was caused by the recent Windows 10 update, but today I noticed that if I unplug my laptop from the power cable, it immediately shuts down without warning. It says that the battery is 100% fully charged, but the power light is blinking a red/orange colour, which seems to mean that the battery is below 5% and is not charging. Other than that, the laptop works fine when plugged in. So far I have tried to restart the computer, shut down and boot up, and hold the power keys while shut down and unplugged, which has not worked. I'm not acquainted with the forum so I'm unsure if this problem has been solved/encountered before. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Problem: Laptop shuts off without warning while running, but ONLY when unplugged. When it's plugged in, everything runs fine. After it dies, the only way to start it back up again is to plug in AC power. When it is unplugged, it lasts for an indeterminable amount of time, and then dies again whenever it feels like.  Failed Solutions: I've checked the battery diagnostics window (F2 during startup), and it tells me that the status of the battery is "OK" with more than 60% charge capacity. While the charge capacity could be better, I see no reason why it would cause the laptop to randomly shut off. I've changed the battery settings to ensure it does not sleep at a certain battery % level.I've updated the BIOS & all driversI ran anti-virus and anti-malware solutions (multiple times across multiple softwares)I performed a system restore to a date on which I was not having the problemNothing has worked. My best guess is that the battery itself is fried, yet I'm not really sure how or why. I have no problem purchasing a new battery and replacing it, but I want to make sure my money is going towards the right solution.

My 5 year old Dell Vostro V131 battery doesn't seem to work anymore when unplugged. When it's plugged-in and charging, the computer works fine, but the red "low battery' light blinks constantly. The battery meter shows that the battery is 100% charged. But as soon as the power cord is unplugged, the computer immediately shuts off.
What might be the problem? Should I purchase a new battery?

So my 2 or 3 weeks old ideapad 110-15ISK laptop just started having a problem with its' battery the day before yesterday. It claims to be 100% charged when I click on the battery but the battery symbol shows no energy, it says it is plugged in but not charging, and the second I unplug the laptop it will shut down. I have checked the forums and the internet for multiple solutions such as turning it off conservative mode(which it wasn't anyway) or removing and readding the battery devices in device manager, but nothing has worked. Is there anything else that you think you guys could help me with before I take it to the store or a support center?

Sorry to hear about your issues!

I haven't encountered the USB disabling issue, however, hopefully I can assist with the power issues.

An indicator as to whether the charger is functioning or not is to look for the power button to be illuminated when powered off. The cable provides two busses: one that powers the laptop (20 volts), and the standard USB power (5 volts).

For lack of a better description, does your wall power adapter have some "play" on it when plugged in? Does the laptop charge until you slightly move the power adapter?

The User Profile issue sounds like an issue with the Windows 10 upgrade. I used to have these issues when upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8. The best bet would be to run a refresh. Unfortunately, it will erase your apps, but should retain your user data:

After this, try and install newer USB drivers designed for Windows 10:

Hello,I noticed that my ultrabook pro keyboard isn't replenishing Helix 2nd (20CG) battery any more when unplugged from AC. While not essential, it was still useful feature to go trough the long day of use.Other than that everything is working as it should (Keyboard battery draining 1st, tablet 2nd, and when on AC it charges the other way around: tablet 1st, keyboard 2nd). I tried (re)installing all battery management & drivers in Windows 10 environment, also updated keyboard firmware, battery firmware shows 'no upgrade needed). Lenovo vantage app is also showing that everything is OK with battery, and fiddling with power settings there shows it communicates with batteries well (start charging or stop charging at certain percentage). Also tried reseting the keyboard part with a pin, but I'm not sure if I did anything (no  leds blinknig, nothing really seems to be happening). Any ideas?

My Yoga 11s shuts down without any warning when it's plugged in. It may operate for a few or several minutes but will always eventually shut off--completely, almost violently and requires a reboot. This issue only occurs when plugged in. No problems with sudden shut down when running on battery power. The battery fully charges without issue when closed and not in use. I have been just making sure I keep it charged and use it unplugged. However use often extends beyond the battery life. The random and persistent shut off has become extremely frustrating.  What is the problem? Any solutions or ideas?

Hugely disappointed. Lenovo seem to ignore posts on their social media so posting here in final desperation. Just bought a brand new Lenovo Yoga 520. During setup the thing just fell over to the Oops screen, restarted and is now stuck at the 'Just A Moment' screen and has been for around an hour and a half now. I truly hate lousy tech and wondered what to do and whether this is how it's going to be. Is there anything I can do and it not then it's back to the retailer to get my money back? I've never owned Lenovo before, but instead brands like Toshiba, Dell and Apple who have never let me down and had heard good things about so am hugely disappointed but life it just too short to have to workaround sloppy badly built tech. Any help and advice welcome before I get rid of this thing.

Hello everyone, I've had many problems with my laptop lately and this time it's quite significant. I discovered today that my laptop completely shuts off when unplugged. I then plugged it in and tried again. It turned on. Removing the plug while the computer was still on, once again instantly shuts it off. Several more retries and it's pretty clear I cannot use my computer unless it is plugged in. I don't know if this is just an issue of a faulty battery, or if something else is at work, but I was wondering if anyone had any advice. Mind you, the laptop is only 3 months old.

Hi guys, My first message here and unfortunately, it's not for the coolest reason.I have a Yoga 500-14 IHW that works perfectly well when plugged, but I noticed a few days ago that as soon as I unplugged it from the USB type power port, the screen suddenly turns black. I thought it was a question of brightness, drivers, windows power plan, etc. I have also tried all the solutions here (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/forums/v3_1/forumtopicpage/board-id/ll06_en/page/6/thread-id/28087), without success once again. One thing that I noticed and that bothers me a lot is the fact that once it is unplugged, if I try to power on the laptop, the screen is black and no Lenovo spash screen appears. The computer is working, the lights are on, I can hear the fans of the graphics card, but no screen. And of course, as soon as I plug in the power cable, the screen lights up and I'm in front of the Windows login page. If I want to access the BIOS, I can only do so once it is plugged. If I want to start from a live cd, I can only do it once plugged. All of this leads me to think that my laptop screen is broken and no longer works when it is unplugged. Is it a battery problem? The battery is at 100% right now, but is there perhaps a more specific test to be done on the battery?I'm waiting for good ideas to check what else is going on. Otherwise, do you confirm that I will have to return the computer in warranty?Thank you very much,Jed13

Hi. I recently bought a Lenovo Yoga 500 laptop, and I'm quite disappointed. When I plug in my charger, 9/10 times it starts to charge, then immediately stop charging, then charge again for a second. This results in never charging. Eventually it charges normally, but it's completely random and sometimes requires 5+ restarts. I need this laptop for school so taking it off for repair is hard for me but I will do it if there is no other way. I got a second charger from a friend and this still occurs, so the problem isn't with the charger. Anyone have any idea for a fix? Thanks

This question has been asked by countless people, and the Internet is filled with a wild array of answers.

If you bought an HP system many years ago, and it came with Windows XP, and you have the re-installation disc, if your system dies or needs to be recommissioned because it's unreliable, can't you use the re-installation disc to install the OS onto the new system? I've heard some limitations are involved but I don't know fact from fiction on these:

1. You can reinstall only IF you upgrade the system with the same motherboard because the key for the install is tied to the serial number of the motherboard.

2. You can reinstall only if you move the hard drive of the old system to the new one (which for me would be impossible because the old drive is IDE and the new one is SATA).

3. You can reinstall only if the new computer is a model from the same vendor (e.g., if you have the reinstall disc for a Dell computer it will only work in another Dell computer).

4. If you call MS customer support and explain that your system's motherboard has died they will "reactivate" the license for you on the new system.

5. You can't do it in any scenario because your EULA will state that you agreed to install the OS on the one computer and agreed it would not be used on another system.

Anybody have any definitive answers on this issue?

A:T or F: Your OEM license for Windows XP dies when your system dies.

Earlier today, my Yoga 3 Pro decided to stop charging.  When plugged in, the battery continues to drain as if it was not plugged in.  I have tested the A/C adapter by plugging in my phone with a micro USB and that worked fine, and the USB charging slot works when my wireless mouse is plugged into it, so I assume it must be the strange Y3P USB cable that is not working.   Would a normal USB to USB cable work for charging my laptop?  If not, how do I replace that "kink" USB cable?  I haven't seen any for sale anywhere and I'd rather not have to pay $40 for a whole new charger on the Lenovo site if the cable is the only issue.

A:Yoga 3 Pro Not Charging

Hello and welcome,

The Y3P and its charger need that special cable.  The charger and laptop have an extra set of pins in the USB sockets that pass 20V to charge the laptop.  A standard USB cable doesn't support those extra contacts.  The charger also provides 5V on the standart USB pins.

Your test of the charger with a your phone shows that the 5V portion of the charger is working but doesn't verify the 20V portion.  It's possible that the charger is bad.

When you plug the laptop and charger together does the battery icon indicate that AC power is attached?  You could have a bad charger, a bad cable, a bad laptop connector (or other component) or the battery management software could be messed up.

Sorry I don't have an easy test or fix.  It may be necessary to actually swap the cable and charger to diagnose this one.

[edit] The Y3P is a fairly new machine.  If this is under warranty, support should be able to help you:  1-877-4-Lenovo, 1-877-453-6686

Dear community, I have some strange behavior with my X1Y3 which does only charge the battery if I shut down the PC without charger plugged-in and then plug the charger once the system is off. In this special case the small orange LED is lid up and the battery is charged. During power-on, in sleep and even when hibernating the orange LED stays off and the battery is not being charged. Windows 10 gives me the information that AC is plugged in but the battery is not being charged ("plugged in, but not charging) and also the Vantage Tool correctly recognizes the 65W charger being connected. What could be the issue? Driver, charging unit or the battery itself? I'm simply puzzled. Thanks in advance and cheers

A:yoga 720 13" charging battery

Hi Ferry-indra,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Placing the laptop connected to the charger overnight with proper autosurge/ voltage regulator device is safe.

The battery itself have a special overcharger protection as described in the manual page 22:
"Battery charging does not start until the Power Meter shows that less than 95% of the total power remains; under this condition the battery pack can charge to 100% of its capacity. This protects the battery pack from being overcharged or from having a shortened life."

Hope this helps answer your query.

Not weird.  The 720 needs 20V to charge.  If your adapter can't provide that or correctly negotiate that it's not surprising that it doesn't work.

The port on my Yoga has been acting up for a few weeks.  It was acting like the charging port was loose.  However, as of last night, it does not see that the charging cord is plugged in at all.  However, it is actually charging a tiny bit, very slowly.  I already attempted to discharge any static and this didn't make any difference.  The regular USB ports seem to be having some trouble recognizing that something is plugged in as well.   Definitely not too happy with the charging system on this computer.  I have already had to replace the USB cord which just stopped working about a year ago. Any suggestions?
