My system's performance took a giant nosedive

Q: My system's performance took a giant nosedive

I've had my P4 1.7Ghz 256, PC800RD RAM, 64MB GeForce3, 80Gig HD computer for about a year now. Through the year the computer has worked absolutely perfectly. Great speed and performance...

Recently I installed SimCity4 which I discovered to be a game that takes up a lot of rescources... Not a big deal, I thought.. and even though I could hear my system working a lot while playing the game, everything seemed fine when I wasn't playing. The only strange to happen was one time it took almost 15 minutes to save a city I was building and the computer seemed like it was REALLY working hard to process the information

Then I decided to update my Norton Anti-Virus. I uninstalled 2002 and installed 2003. Here begins my own personal hell.

After upgrading Norton Anti-Virus I started noticing the computer lagging. I'd click the start button and the menu wouldn't pop up for 2 or 3 seconds. the Mouse curser would get jerky. and even closing programs and folders became delayed. Also, now after a while the H.D.D. light on the computer's tower will suddenly stay on until I shut down the computer and restart it. This even happens when I have no apps running. I've checked the task manager in XP and the performance tab shows a normal amount of CPU usage, there's no suspicious processes hogging up memory. And yet at times I also hear a sound that sounds like the computer is about to power down for a split second but recovers (kind of like a power skip sound)

Oh and I uninstalled both Anti-Virus and SimCity 4, and the problems still continue

Can anyone offer any advice of what the hell might be wrong with my system? Did the RAM in my computer get damaged that the computer isn't reporting to me? Did my hard drive get damaged? Or is Windows XP the problem in which a HD format might be in order? I hope someone can help me because I'm at a total loss and I need my performance to be at it's best for my video editing and graphic design work.

Thanks to anyone who can provide some insight.

Preferred Solution: My system's performance took a giant nosedive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Win7 SP1
My System Volume folder is gigantic right now, almost 10GB.

I thought I could decrease that by deleting some older restore points with CrapCleaner.

When I looked at the SR points in CC, there is only one there, the most receont one, created today.

Is that possible---one restore point ten GB in size?

Or---has something gone wrong? If so, any way to fix it?

Anyone have an idea what could be going wrong with that--a 10 GB SV folder with only one restore point in it?

Of course, one solution would be to turn off system restore, so that everything in that folder is deleted, then start it again. However, if something goes wrong with the computer, that SR point could be a lifesaver, necessary to restore the system.

One other question--can the contents of the SVI folder be copied to an external HDD for backup (I have taken ownership of the folder, and given myself full permission on it and subfolders), before turning SR off and on? Then if necessary to use that saved SR point, copy those contents back to the SVI folder of the original drive?

A:Giant System Volume Information Folder

Well, you can actually start system restore and then click "Choose a different restore point" to display the other available points, see this tut.

System Restore

You can also a 3rd party tool like QRM Plus manager to take a look at the points.

Its possible the previous restore points got deleted for some reason or theres insufficient space allotted to them. You can set that space this way.

When I add an attachment, the image appears huge to the receiver. How do I reduce the size of the image.

A:giant images

Hi carol, you would need to reduce the image size in a graphics program, like Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements or Paint Shop Pro. Adobe Photoshop is rather expensive, but Photoshop Elements and Paint Shop Pro are arouns $100. There are free image editors out there, I just don't know the names of them, try going to http://www.download.com and look under the graphics section and there should be some editors there you could either download for free or atleast get a free trial to see if you like them. Hope I have helped.

Recently my computer has started displaying giant pixels anytime I want to start up a computer game like The Sims or Trickster. For a while I thought it was just 3-d games that were not working but then I tried playing a 2-d pixel game, and I had the same problom, here is a screen cap of what I am talking about.

The computer that I am running is a eMachines T3256.
It has a nvidia GeForce 4 MX graphics card.
Is there anyways that I could fix this with buying a nother card, or downloading something, or will I have to take my computer in to someone to fix it?

A:Giant pixels, I need help

Re The Sims (original?) - your card should be able to play that

Re Trickster - your card doesn't support DX8 for 1.1 pixel shaders so probably cannot play that

Re the pixel problem - uninstall your present nVidia dtrivers in Add/Remove programs, reboot, and install the latest drivers.

edit: if the l;atest drivers don't fix it, uninstall them and try one of the 53.xx series - they apparently could, with hardware assisted software emulation, support vertex shader model 1.1.

i am running vista so i thought whether it was that stupid problem where you have to run some programs as administrator, tried this and same thing happened, the weird thing was that no error message popped up detailing what happened, just a dialog box with looking for solution and then the end program screen. i checked in the problems page of control panel and looked at what the problem was. this was what it came up with:

You can also change what pop-ups are allowed by going to Internet Options > Privacy > Pop-up Blocker Settings. Personally, I block all pop-ups and then whitelist any sites that I want to allow pop-ups from (or CTRL click links to open in a new window and bypass the pop-up blocker manually).

I just installed WIN XP on a virgin harddrive. I don't like icons on my desktop so I like to use quick launch for recycle bin. my ISP and Internet Explorer. When I checked quick launch my taskbar grew to double its size. No matter how I moved or squashed it, it was either gone or double, but never the normal size. As soon as I uncheck quick launch I can compress the taskbar back to normal. Ideas and fixes welcomed.

A:the case of the giant taskbar

Have you got large icons selected for the quick launch taskbar?

To check, unlock the taskbar, then right-click on the quick-launch bar, and from the popup menu choose view, then large or small icons. Small icons will return the taskbar to normal size if this is what the problem is.

Hello WeirdFrog, and welcome to Vista Forums.

I'm not sure of what you mean. That is the normal close button in Vista for non classic themes.

I have had a virus installed on my computer called rebate giant. It has 2 files on my desktop (one called rebate informer and one called rebate giant). I know how to remove files through the registry editor and was wondering if anyone had the file paths for me to manually remove it??

A:Rebate informer/giant

I don't think rebate informer/rebate giant qualifies as a virus. It looks as though it installs an Inbox.com toolbar and some desktop shortcuts. Uninstall the applications, and the toolbar, and delete the shortcuts if they are left behind.

There are no files in the registry, but there are references to files. Be mindful of travels in the registry.

I was super excited to see the 4th Gen X1 Yoga released, but so dissapointed when I looked at the pictures. That giant bottom bezel. What is going on here? Who in their right mind released that in the year 2019?All the other manufacturers seem to be slowly cottoning on what the market wants (hint: not 16:9), yet here we seem to be stuck with completely wasted real estate on the laptops. It just makes no sense, the market is all about trying to get bigger screens in a smaller device. The easiest way to do that is to put a 14" 16:10/3:2 screen in a 12.5" body. Does Lenovo have any official word on this? They have so many unnecessary overlapping models, yet not a single offering that has what we all want. The XPS13 2-in-1 with the 16:10 screen is going to decimate sales.I've stayed true to my 8 year old X220 which is still going strong, yet unless something gets announced by Lenovo by end of July, it's bye bye lenovo from me.

Hi there

I'm a sucker for these strategy sim games, so I bought Hotel Giant, (Sold Out Range). I have installed it successfully but it won't run.

Thanks again

On my side I am getting ~ 5 down and ~ 1 to 2 up , transfers.

4. I tried "Speedup my PC" application and got maybe a 3% to 5% max improvement
5. I do not have a ton of apps running in memory... pretty std. stuff

A:system performance still down....

I'm going to give you some pointers that I use on systems. Note: I'm a mainframe guy, I tune for performance based on things I know about architecture. You have posted about W/me to a W/NT forum. W/me is not in the same class and catagory of NT or W2K.

First thing you need to do is set the swap file to a fixed size. Not knowing what software you are running, but based on your having 128MB of RAM, I'd set the swap file to 256MB (both MIN & MAX). If you have multiple partitions, I'd make the swap file set up on the "D" partition. If you have multiple hard drives, I'd put the swap file on the first partition of the second drive -- not knowing anything else about your machine.

I'd be sure to defrag and scan the hard-drives AFTER having set the swap to a fixed size and rebooting (leave it on "C" for this if you have more than one partition/drive). Then set the swap file to the desired partition and reboot.

Now, are you running AOL software? Many people have noticed a serious degredation of their machines once they put on AOL's software. Don't know what to tell you about this.

have u got the latest drivers for your motherboard chipset? they always help
the only reason i have found for quits to desktop are overclocked ram and u havent got anything overclocked - so im guessing that your motherboard is to blame in some way

A:system performance

You can speed up the computer performance by the following ways:--

1. You should elete all the temporary files like "temp, %temp% and prefetch' files from your computer.
2. Uninstall the unwanted programs installed on your computer.
3. You should perform the "defrag" and "diskcleanup" utility over the specific time.
4. You should remove all the temporary internet files from your computer.
5. Remove all the unwanted start-up items by using the msconfig utility.
6. Scan your computer by using any updated antivirus program.

At some point a few months after I got my Sony VAIO the desktop icons became huge. It doesn't appear to affect working of the computer. However it gets pretty crowded with only two or three short cuts. It looks all kind of wrong.

I have looked for other advice. I have tried the screen resolution etc etc so I am all out of answers. Any help would be fantastic.

A:Giant oversized desk top icons

Hi KaneBridge
What you need to do is change the icon size from large to small just right click on the desktop view and small icons.

Good day all. Is anyone familiar with IM Giant Instant Messanger? When I researched it, it said that it was a program that can "easily consolidate your Im programs" (AOL, MSN etc.) It appeared on my desktop a few days ago. The kids swear that they don't know how it got there. My computer appears to be running fine.

1. Is it spyware? Spybot, adware, and AVG haven't shown anything out of the ordinary.
2. I would like to remove it. However, I can't find it in the Add/Remove programs list. Also, there is no uninstlall associated with the program. How do I get rid of it? Thanks!

A:IM Giant Instant Messanger Question

See if you can find a folder for in your programs. If you do there might be an uninstall file in it.

My giant antispyware scans files, folders, cookies, etc... When I run a scan it freezes once it gets to scanning cookies. It never did that before & now all of a sudden it does. I was in my documents & files & other stuff like that eraseing some cookies. Is it some thing I did? Did I erase an impotant cookie? Or is it just coincidence & my giant antispyware program is just screwed up? & how can I fix it?

I use IE6 and Win98. When I send pictures as attachments with Outlook Express 6, the attachments come through in normal size, BUT the pictures are also shown in the body of the email in GIANT size (only a small portion of the picture is shown). Is there a way that I can eliminate the picture in the body of the email and just send the attachment? It takes a long time to send the message and I assume that sending the picture in two different sizes is part of the cause. I have no problem with the attachments but would like to get rid of also sending the Large picture. Can anybody help? A change in settings, maybe?

win 3.1 aand xp could not handle it. vista could shut the program down.
win7 64. is worse than 3.1!
it ends up snarling the whole computer and has to be powered down with the power button.
have 2 computers - both toshiba laptops both win7 64. one connects to the internet, the other never has.
both have the same problem.
sometimes they get to the 'logging off' or 'shutting down' screen - but it sits there for hours just showing the words and doing nothing - going nowhere.
task manager is no use here either
other than buying an apple - is there a solution?

Yes there is. But first we need you system specs, and OS version to start.

Okay, it's BIGGER than I want now! LOL

I've been trying to make print easier to read since I got WinsXP SP2, but now I've messed around where I shouldn't be and have ended up w/GIGANTIC print on websites such as this one. (Much bigger than the type you're probably seeing here.)

I was fooling around in Ctrl Panel and reset some size options. I thought I was in device mgr, but can't retrace my steps...but I was DEFINETLY somewhere in the Ctrl Panel.

Can anyone help? Thanks, Fox
