Internet Explorer opening very slowly and hanging the system!

Q: Internet Explorer opening very slowly and hanging the system!

For the past 2 days, when I try to open my IE6 browser, it first takes up upto 100% CPU, hangs the system for a while and then opens up taking hell lot of time!
The same thing happens when I try to open another browser simultaneously.

Sometimes the process explorer.exe plays the same irritating role of hanging the system!

I've already scanned my system with the latest CWShredder, Adaware, Spybot S&D, and Norton AV 2005 but the problem stands as it is!

I'm posting my HijackThis log.

Please help me to get rid of this problem soon!

Preferred Solution: Internet Explorer opening very slowly and hanging the system!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Internet Explorer opening very slowly and hanging the system!

Will the uninstallation and then a fresh re-installation if IE 6 help to resolve this issue?

Hello everyone,

In the last few days, Internet Explorer has been opening very slowly or not at all. If it opens, after 15-20 minutes it seems to stall out and I have to force it closed. Here is a HiJackThis log from a few minutes ago. Any help would be appreciated.

When I right click on the desktop to refresh it, my system hangs and the right click menu pops up not before a minute.

This slow response has come up after I installed Xteq Systems X-Setup (http://www.xteq.com) Version 6.3 and thereafter everything on my system now is responding very slowly.
Even the System Restore is unable to restore my system to a restore point created earlier.

Please help to restore and boost my system's original speed.

When I try to open IE the window opens and then closes again. When I try to open the "Help and Support" or ?system restore? absolutely nothing happens. I have run a virus check with AVG and it shows nothing. I have booted in safe mode but still have the same symptoms. I am running Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 and automatic updates. I have run sfc /scannow, once this is completed, everything works fine. However, when I reboot, the problems return. I have gone through the 5 steps suggested on the forum and now am posting the log to see if anyone can help.

Originally we thought it was a conflict with iTunes. Following a run sfc /scannow I was able to do a system restore and reinstalled iTunes and it has worked OK for a while. However, after installing Windows updates, the problem has returned.

My last post was:-

Hi Reid sorry I've been slow to get back to you. After I installed iTunes, the computer worked fine for a short while, but has gone back to the same problem. All is OK until I install the latest Windows updates. I currently have 5 to install:

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XP (KB933566)
Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express for Windows XP (KB929123)
Microsoft GDI+ Detection Tool (KB873374)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB935839)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB935840)

If I restart the computer or shut it down without installing the updates, it reboots OK and everything works OK, so it would seem that one or more of the updates is causing the problem. So I in... Read more

Hi chateauneufdupa(pe)

Trying the updates one at a time would indeed be the right thing to do. Have you had any luck with that ? You can manually create a restore point before you install each update in order to be able to go back if any error occurs. You can also uninstall some updates using add/remove programs if you check the "show updates" box.

If you believe it could be some update conflicting with iTunes you could try to contact iTunes technical support about that.

I don't know whether MS reported any compatibility issues with those updates but maybe another MS tech will know more about that.

First note- I have ruled out malware causes for now. I've run scans with MBAM(quick plus selective specific folder scans)), SAS(quick and full) and TDSSkiller, and found nothing at all.

Second note- a reboot seems to have cleared the issue, for now. I'll monitor it though. I just want to know the cause.

Okay so... first off I had clogged the RAM some by running Firefox overnight a couple nights to play some "idle" type games. I play them a lot, and I really should stop. Second, I bought an MP3 player as a birthday gift for someone and had to load music onto it(they lack the means). It is a USB 1.1 device so file transfers were slow and it took about 2 hours to get everything on. I suspect this clogged Explorer.

This started shortly after finishing that task. I put in a micro SD card to put some files onto it, created a fresh folder and... the window opened then minimized. The taskbar showed it there but with a generic icon and clicking did nothing. I could close it by clicking the X box. Took a bit of work, removed and reseated the card but it persisted. Thinking maybe the SD card was causing it I wanted to run a test on the card- opening a local folder did the same thing PLUS I got a popup to update Javascript- legit, I believe. I ran malware scans and found nothing. Eventually proceeding it seemed that if I copied and pasted a folder name it would definitely cause this when working with the SD card, typing the name manually let me proceed. Okay, all is fine, st... Read more

My laptop is dell i5 with 8gb ram. It seems powerful than dual core, 2GB ram desktop in my office. But, sometimes internet page gets stuck and doesn't open fast in my laptop whereas the internet pages opens up at normal speed in my office PC with low SPECS. Is the PC due to temporary and hidden files downloaded by browser or is it due to slow internet speed?

So my computer is basically brand new. Built it like 6 months ago. Check my profile for the specs. But within the passed 3 weeks, my computer has been running slower than normal in some cases. It's not all the time. Just when I click on icons to run or install programs. Where it normally would take 1 second at the most, it now takes up to like 30 seconds.

Also, when browsing (both Firefox 4.0b6 and IE9), whenever I try to run any type of embedded audio or youtube video the browser will normally freeze for about 20-30 seconds before playing. Sometimes it will lock up and not respond for a bit. A couple times I have tried to CTRL+ALT+DEL but I get an error stating that logon could not bring up the system manager and if nothing shows up, press ESC or restart the computer.

I have ran Spybot, MSE, and Malwarebytes and none of them can find any Malware/Spyware/Viruses. I heard there was a problem with Firefox's plugin container (also had a Windows alert about it crashing) so I turned it off but the problem still isn't fixed.

WTH is going on with my CPU???

Several months ago I had to completely wipe my computer and reinstall everything due to a .dll failing to load after having installed a Windows Update.

About a week ago, I noticed that the graphics on my computer were bad. Two days ago I went to Dell's website and made sure I had the latest updates for my graphics card ( NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 ). That seemed to have corrected my bad graphics issue as my screen looked normal again.

Yesterday I began to notice that web pages would not load properly, that I couldn't have more than one instance of a browser open at one time, and that pages just froze.

Today the computer crashed with a blue screen that said page_fault_in_nonpaged_area. Then I got a message box from Windows Error Reporting saying that a device driver caused Windows to stop unexpectedly...a "stop error". It told me to go use Windows Updates to check for updated drivers. I went there, but could never get to any page where drivers were updated, it just kept trying to check my computer for updates...and then said that I needed to update my Windows Update (KB892130 - Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool). It failed to install this update and would not install it the couple of times I tried.

I have ran Hijack This and the other scans as instructed and are posting them (and/or attaching) them below:

I've been trying to repair my parents computer, which over the last few weeks has gone from a reasonably well running machine to totally unusable. To say it is slow is beyond an understatement! The problem is, it only seems to be slow in certain areas - most notably, initial opening of any windows explorer and internet explorer. Trying to My open Computer, My documents etc, or an IE window, you can quite literally double click, go and fill the kettle, wait for it to boil, brew the tea, pour it out and get back to the computer before it has opened the folder / I.E. window I've worked through the "slow computer" thread, with the exception of the defrag, simply because trying to open the defrag window has yet to succeed - and I'm not sure it's going to be enough to help?! It took nearly 2 whole days just to update and run the various anti virus and spyware... Not because the spyware was slow - once running that took pretty much normal time, as did adaware and AVG, just getting folders and windows open! That's the rub, once an app is actually up and running it seems OK?Other symptoms noted are:A tendency for "not responding" messages when trying to close programs such as Live messenger or windows explorer (though no problems with any of the adaware etc).Unable to close a file on shutdown which I have found is part of the HP monitoring software - can't really get rid of it as it's needed, but HP software update doesn'... Hi!
I'm new to techspot. I've been having a problem with my laptop. Here are its specs:
Toshiba Satellite A100
Model #: PSAA8C-SK400E
80GB Hard Drive
1GB Memory
Windows XP SP3
ESET Smart Security 4
This laptop, for some reason, has continually had various problems. I think I've had to reinstall Windows XP about 4-6 times in the last 5 years or so since I bought it because of viruses, BSODs, error messages, etc. It's definitely not a problem with the Internet Connection, because the other computer works fine, and it's actually older. We have Telus as our ISP. We had a problem with our modem, and we had Telus replace it with a newer modem, and the new modem is a different one from the one we had last and has another brand name.

A while after we got the new modem, Internet Explorer 8 started loading a lot slower. It takes a few minutes to load most pages, but if you duplicate a tab, it's very quick. Youtube videos take forever to buffer, and when you are loading a flash application it doesn't load. When you download files, it doesn't download until you refresh a few times and it finally downloads. Google searches take forever to load too. I tried using a portable version of Google Chrome, but unfortunately, it had the same results. When I tried installing Google Chrome from the website, it couldn't download because it took too long. I use a wireless internet connection to connect to the internet & get a Good-V... Read more

Hi guys,

I had a random explorer.exe crash. I was playing Hearthstone, then I closed the game and closed the battle.net client. Pretty much straight after closing those two programs, my explorer.exe crashed and my desktop wallpaper was reset to the default windows blue. The funny thing is, I could still Alt+Tab to other programs (although I couldn't actually see the little scrolling menu that normally appears during that command) and I could still interact with the other applications as normal. I was browsing youtube and chatting on steam still. Eventually google chrome also stopped responding but the video's audio was still streaming in the background. At this point I basically had to restart my computer. I tried to open the task manager to view my memory activity first, but I couldn't open the task manager but I could still open the Ctrl+Alt+Del menu.

I have no idea what caused the bug, it happened on the same computer once before, maybe two weeks ago. The symptoms seem to suggest a memory leak or something? Perhaps related to the battle.net client or Hearthstone specifically? There's no error codes or anything and when I hit restart and booted back in, I don't get an notifications in my Action Center etc.

System spec are as follows:
Windows 8.1 64-bit
CPU: Intel i7-2600k (stock)
RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance
GPU: GigaByte 670 WindForce OC 4GB (Driver 331.65)

Okay I just found a post about this somewhere else, apparently it's an issue with Hearthstone on windows 8 as of the latest patch. In case anyone has the same problem, here's the solution:
Go to the Hearthstone Build on your computer (use the show in Explorer option from the Battle.net app, or go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Hearthstone)Right click the Hearthstone.exe and go to properties. In the Compatibility tab select "Run this program in comptability mode for:"
Set the field to Windows 7.

Thanks anyway, I hope this helps someone else too!

Hello all,

The system as in signature - Win 7 x64

Preamble: the problem did not exist for a few months of using preinstalled OS on this Asus Laptop
I do suspect some recent Windows Patches, but I could be wrong.

Brief description: If after the system start (Reboot) I will go ahead and use IE8 (both flavours 32bit or 64bit) it will hang with hourglass rolling in a min or so after re session started.

The symptoms could differ a bit.. Sometimes I can use other Applicatios including ProcessExplorer, Task Manager, Firewall (Comodo v3) etc. in order to find out what's going on
Sometimes I cannot do anything - whole system goes to nirvana

The solution(s) rather workaround: Reboot the system and leave it alone for 3-5 min.
or
leave IE in hanging stage as soon as it happens. It will wake up by itself 3-5min later.

Other symptoms: If the user will desperately click on pinned IE
sometimes (not always) the System will report "Not Responding"
If the clicking took place user will have dozens of sessions of IE after the hanging ended and all of them have to be just closed.
In some cases there will be tips displayed "This Tab will be restored" or kinda like that

The Alternative Browser: the latest FireFox 3.6 - no such issue whatsoever

What was tried: practically anything that I could find out there regarding the similar descriptions
- Add-ons disabled;
- All Add-ons uninstalled;
- Java (both x64 & 32 bit uninstalled)
- Flash - uninstalled
- all security... Read more

I have Verizon DSL. Two days ago without any precipitating slowdown, IE suddenly stopped working. It crawled and crawled and never resolved the url. But I am able to ping urls from my DOS command box. I talked to the good folks at Verizon and we confirmed that it is not the DSL line that is the problem.

I installed and ran WEBroot spyware software. It found and deleted over 100 spyware cookies that had lodged on my machine. I also defragged my hard-drive and restarted the machine. BUT, IE still hangs and never resolves the url. Interestingly, when I try to use Netscape, it gives me an error message that I've typed an invalid command. I type in www.cnn.com in the url and it tells me that I've typed an invalid command??

I'm using Windows 2000 professional and IE 6 but without most recent service patchs.

please help.
thanks.

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

Download Hijackthis

Create a permanent folder on your hard drive like c:\program files\hjt. Unzip the file to that folder.

Double click on Hijackthis.exe then click on the "Scan" button, then click on "Save Log".

Copy and paste it back here and someone will be happy to review it.

Don't make any changes until instructed to do so.

Hello dtl,

Welcome to TSG.

You may have used Malwarebytes before. If you have, and still have it on your machine, please update and run. Post the scan report back here.

If you do not have Malwarebytes please download from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Download OTL to your desktop.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A105, with Microsoft XP SP3. Yesterday I clicked on what I thought was a harmless website, instead this trojan appeared. Not sure what the name of this one was but it repeadetly suggested antivirus software and did not allow me to open anything. I ran Malwarebytes and CCleaner and I believe I have removed this trojan yet cannot connect to the internet. My wireless connection says it is connected, yet when I open IE8 it initally asks me if i want to restore last session or open home page, clicking either does nothing. Internet explorer just says it is connecting, I cant click on anything in IE, can only close it.

Help please, thank you.

Hi there,
As of Wednesday, my computer will take up to five minutes to load a page through Internet Explorer. I tried it on different internet connections, as well as resetting my router, but it still had the exact same problem. Windows Live Messenger works fine, but the internet windows will not load! A friend installed Firefox on my computer as a temporary fix, and it is working fine, but I would rather get back to Explorer!

I ran a few Norton scans of the computer, as well as a Spybot scan, and had the programs fix anything they found. However, this did not help.

I am using Windows XP, and have IE 7.

If anyone has advice I would be extremely grateful!!
Thanks,
Lea

Hi,

I am having problems with my computer where Internet Explorer 8 is running slowly and crashing. I have checked the event logs and noticed the following errors:

Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 8.0.6001.18813, time stamp 0x4a6621ae, faulting module Flash10c.ocx, version 10.0.32.18, time stamp 0x4a613d79, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0023e55a, process id 0x85c, application start time 0x01ca2c79de31429a.

Failed to load the plug-in module. (GUID = {56F9312C-C989-4E04-8C23-299DEE3A36F5})(Error code = 0x80042019)

I am currently running Windows Vista and have Norton Antivirus installed. The internet explorer erro message above shows up in the log numerous times but often has a slightly different message e.g isntead of having Flash10.ocx it sometimes has other dll names.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks for your help.

Oh f i downloaded something and i thought it was dodgy, i think main problem is that it had a compatibility issue. as soon as i run it it conflicted with another program and i uninstalled it straight away, but it said it didn't install correctly so i reinstalled it correctly and uninstalled it with windows recommendations. it was completely removed from my system but now internet explorer is downloading pages REALLY SLOWLY!!! My comp was so fast and downloaded internet pages in nano seconds, now its taking 20 seconds to fullly load my homepage. I now its something to do with downloading images etc. to web pages etc. because i opened about 20 homepages and they all loaded at about the same time so it's obviously not that my system is going slow or can't handle it. I hope the answer is not to revert to before i installed the program because if u will see my previous post my back ups have been failing so i don't have a back up, the only option is to roll back to about 1month ago and lose all my settings and i think that will mess with my comp and force me to doa full system restore so i hope y'all got a solution, thanks

I see alot of people have this problem so hopefully someone can shed some light on this situation.

This happens with both Firefox (3.5) and IE (8)

Hello,

My internet explorer (version 7.0) randomly hangs. It always hangs (for 10-20 minutes, unless I close it in Task Manager) the first time I open internet explorer after turning on my computer each day and hangs occasionally throughout the day. Sometimes it works just fine. When I go in to close it in Task Manager, it often says that iexplorer is taking up sometimes as much as 135,000 K. What is causing this? I have posted my most recent hijackthis log below. BTW, I am running Windows XP. Thanks in advance for the help!
