Q: Solved: HJT Scan read please....loss of start page & unwanted search assist present

Hi;

One of my kids turned off PC's security during a download and forgot to restart when they finished. I know of at least two issues.... "ABOUT BLANK" (loss of start page) and "MY SEARCH ASSITANT" in programs add/remove. PC is now fully secured and I am now looking for any remaining "rats in the woodpile"! Would appreciate a read of the HJT scan below-

Many thanks in advance

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Please click here http://www.majorgeeks.com/Sun_Java_Runtime_Environment_d4648.html to download the latest version of JAVA Install the application, then go to the Add/Remove Programs options in the Control Panel and Remove ALL previous versions of JAVA.

log looks fine
Get all of these and/or verify you have the current versions

SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html
SpyBot V1.4 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html
AdAware SE 1.06 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
MS Windows Defender - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...E7-DA2B-4A6A-AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en (XP and W2K only)

DownLoad them (they are free), install them, check each for their
definition updates and then run AdAware, MS Defender (W2k/XP) and Spybot, fixing anything they say.

In SpywareBlaster - Always enable all protection after updates
In SpyBot - After an update run immunize

Check for updates and run weekly

Hello.
Hope someone can help. As I search on Google, a automatic unwanted new page pops up with an MSN Search on it. How can you turn this off or stop it from happening? If it wasn't MSN one would say its a malware of some kind. Any one know how to deal with it?
Thanks in advance.

A:Unwanted MSN Search page

MSN still has redirects though, and that makes what it is doing malicious (because you are not in control of how your system is working).

Check your hosts file and see if there are any entries there that shouldn't be. That's the easiest way to redirect a search. Did you download any MSN toolbars or anything?

Over the last week or so, for no apparent reason, I now get a blue screen before windows will load. It tells me it is going to scan discs for errors and gives me 8 seconds to avoid this by pressing any key. If I happen to miss this 8 second warning, there is no escape and it goes into a long scanning process which I can only stop by turning off the computer and starting again.

Anyone know why this is suddenly happening and , more importantly, how I can stop it.

Thank you

First thing I would do is find the maker of the hdd. Then I would go
to their website and download and run their diagnostic tool. To
confirm or deny a hdd problem.

Hi, I'm new here. I need help badly. I have few problems which had been bugging me for some time.

Whenever I tried to search for something using yahoo, another search page "searchportal" will pop-up. And while I am surfing the net, a pop-up will appear once a while featuring different products ranging from porn to adware removal, with the title "only the best".
As if not enough, somtimes when I just started to surf the net, a plug-in called "websiteviewer" will automatic install.

I tried scanning with Spybot S&D, AdAware, CWShredder,
each time I fixed the problems found, and when I reboot the PC again, the same problems came back again. Pls help me... thnks a million.....

Attached is the log file of HJT.

I am using IE7 on Windows XP. IE will open, slower than I remember but it opens. The problem I am having is when I go to search (usually Yahoo, but happens on Google too). I will put in the search topic I am looking for, when the results come up and I click on the one I want (or any for that matter) I get redirected to some other website. The one I am usually getting starts out as http://go.yahoo...... then ends up at http://yellowpages.superpages.com....but have ended up at other sites than what I was looking for.I have run McAffe and Advanced System Care, but nothing is found. Can anyone please help me? It is really frustrating!

A:Using IE7 and any search engine will redirect to unwanted page.

Hi and welcome. I have moved your topic here as you appear to be infected. Let's get a scan and report done. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.32) and save it to your desktop.alternate download link 1alternate download link 2If you have a previous version of MBAM, remove it via Add/Remove Programs and download a fresh copy.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave a... I am a freelance film editor contracted to work on a corporate video production for a small UK indie Production company.
The companies Win2K platform is a turnkey system installed in 2002 and running dis-continued editing software no longer supported by either manufacturer or reseller.
As a turnkey system there is no possibility to update service packs or OS to more secure versions as there are bugs in the editing software that will cause reduced functionality if updates are installed. The software manufacturer discontinued the product before these bugs could be fixed.

The system is part of a LAN (XP Server), however there is no internet access or mail account configured for it as it is a dedicated Editing workstation. LAN is required for network rendering of 3D animation and 2D compositing etc. Since 2002 there have been no problems with spyware or adware prior to this and normally the system is protected by firewalls at ISP, Local Server and Local Router levels.
A short time ago the LAN Server was upgraded and for a day or so all protection was down. It was after this that IE pop ups started to populate the screen at an increasing rate.
All the pop-ups display the IE "Cannot find Server... This page cannot be displayed" message. This is normal because there is no internet access configured. Actually IE is deliberately set to look for a fictitious proxy server, (SERVER02 Port 80) which doesn't exist.
The pop-ups are compromising the edit workflow especially w... Read more

No one likes me. Hello Sharpes,Yes we do...we just ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. The reason we ask this or do not respond to your requests is because that would remove you from the active queue that Techs and Staff have access to. The malware staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response, there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. That is why I have made an edit to your last post, instead of a reply. Please do not multiple post here, as that only pushes you further down the queue and causes confusion to the staff. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response but your log will be reviewed and answered as soon as possible.Thank you for understanding.Regards,The weatherman (Moderator)

I recently downloaded Babylon Translator but decided to opt out. I did a search of Cdrive
and deleted all that was found. The trouble is that when I opened Mozilla Firefox instead
of coming up with my default Home Page (which is my ISP's HP), I got a Babylon Search Engine which has been "enhanced by Google". To my mind it is a Google alias. In German to boot.
I went to Control Panel>Internet Options and my default HP is as it should be,my ISP.
I have looked all over the Control Panel,Program Files and elsewhere to no avail.
How can I get rid of this Babylon engine whose address is search.babylon.com/home.
A look in Firefox also was no good.
Please help,

This question is about using "Page {PAGE} of {NUMPAGES}."

I've read many solutions for this online and in MS's help files. None of them are working, and it really has me perplexed because I consider myself an advanced user.

My document is a book:

The first page of my book is a cover page. It shouldn't be counted in page numbering.
Beginning on the second page, my book has a TOC and then 9 chapters.
The TOC and each chapter are set up in their own sections. (I do this because I include the chapter's name - which is the section name - in the footer along with page numbers. It also facilitates creating the TOC)
I want the TOC to be counted as Page 1
All of that works fine for the {PAGE} page number. To accomplish it, I told Word to start counting page numbers from 0, and I suppressed displaying the number on the Cover. Then for subsequent pages I selected "Continue from previous section."
My issue is that I really want to show both the current page and the total number of pages ("Page {PAGE} of {NUMPAGES}") in the footer.

When I try that, {PAGE} displays correctly, but {NUMPAGES} shows one too many. It is obviously counting the cover page.

Evidently what I did in #5 above only affects the count for {PAGE} and not for {NUMPAGES}.

All over the web I find the simple solution of using a formula field for {NUMPAGES} as follows:
=1+{NUMPAGES}

Actually, I think that would do the opposite of what I want. I would probably have to... Read more

A:Solved: Word 2007 Page Numbering: Make {NUMPAGES} start counting from Page 2?

I was just messing with the same issue and found a solution:

{={NUMPAGES}-1}

This may look exactly like something you tried already but here is the difference:

Instead of typing in the curly braces ( { ) manually, you have to hit "Ctrl-F9" to insert a field, then do the same for the braces around "NUMPAGES". You wind up with a field inside a field. That way it interprets the "NUMPAGES" as your document property, returns a number like "42", then the next field takes the equation "= 42 - 1" and returns "41". If you don't use "CTRL-F9" to enter the "NUMPAGES" field, it sees the first curly brace and stops, seeing it as a syntax error.

Hope it works for you! It worked for me!

Hi,

I have been trying to make my web pages 3WC / 4.01 compliant and viewable as much as possible across different browsers (albeit not perfectly)

I have been to http://AnyBrowser.Com and checked my pages in their site viewer. I have looked at the 3WC homepage and their markup Validation service at http://validator.w3.org/

Basically according to all the above, my pages look like crap and have heaps of errors.

I have located the online HTML Tidy service at:

http://cgi.w3.org/cgi-bin/tidy

I have used this HTML Tidy in combination with the Site Viewer at AnyBrowser.com and the Validator at 3WC.

After having reviewed and noted results of my existing pages in the Site Viewer and the Validator, I put my pages through the HTML Tidy, Copied the Page Source, pasted this into Dreamweaver and uploaded new pages.

I have put these new pages back through the Site Viewer and the Validator only to find that the pages are MUCH worse than they were before.

Even in the 3WC Validator the code entered by HTML Tidy is noted as errors (ex: Doc Type is replaced by Tidy code etc).

I can't understand why HTML Tidy would allow this to happen if it is indeed supposed to promote the 3WC compliance?

I am thinking that my only option at this point is to delete my HTML Tidy pages, go back to the originals and go through the errors listed in the 3WC Validator and manually fix them one by one...which (even with the error explanations handy) I am not sure that I can do properly (or indeed ... WHAT mess?
You should post some information so that we can help you.
First, what Version of Windows are you using, if XP have you updated it with SP2?
Second, what is the nature of the problem? If you are getting any kind of error message, if you can included it EXACTLY as it appears in your response, that is a great help.
Second, has the problem just started happening and is it consistent (it always happens when you perform X)? The clearer you are about what you are doing when the problem occurs, the easier someone can provide help.
Third, what have you done so far, besides call Dell customer support? Have you updated your Antivirus and run it? Have you run scandisk and then defragged?

The more information you can provide us, the faster we can help solve the problem.
Cheers,
John

It is an unsafe practice to post any but a throw-away Email address on ANY forum.

Whenever I start up I get an ASUS Motherboard screen - how do I get rid of it - tried going into ASUS but couldn't find answer.

Also after ASUS I get a screen asking me which user I want. Is there any way I get it just to go directly to full start up? Sorry about all these questions, I suspect it's just me forgetting the necessary things to do when installing a new computer - it's years since I had to do it.

A:[SOLVED] Unwanted start up screen

The ASUS Splash screen could possibly be removed from the BIOS.

Enter the bios (F2 on boot?), go to the boot tab, select Boot setting config and disable quiet boot.

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully.First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding.Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one.If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem.Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me.Post all logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts. If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean. My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Thanks for your understanding.     HijackThis is not the preferred initial scanning tool in this forum. With today's malware, a more comprehensive set of logs is required to determine the presence of malware.    Scan with FRST in normal modePlease download Farbar's Recovery Scan Tool to you... Hi,

I saw someone else on this website had trouble with this piece of malware before, but I am unable to find the link again.

Basically my problem is that every time I load a webpage, random words on the site are hyperlinked to ads. When I hover above the links I get a small popup that says SearchAssist. I was able to "opt out" through the popup, but I know the virus is still downloaded on my computer, just inactive for the moment. I would really like to completely it from my computer, because it is slowing down Chrome... a lot. Also I downloaded and ran HijackThis and it does show up on the log, I'm just not sure what to do with it now. Every time I select it and click fix, it appears to work and then shows right back up again. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi,

My Internet was running very slowly, and it went to conduit search and had hyperlinked searchassist ads. Using malewarebytes and uninstalling conduit I was able to get rid of conduit, but searchassist and the computer was still very slow. I googled "searchassist infection" and got linked to here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/511779/infected-with-search-assist-hyperlink-virus/ . I followed the directions as it applied to my computer, until I got to HijackThis and the  Eset online search found viruses which were different from mine. I also saw now after following those instructions on that thread, that on the general malware instructions it says not to use combofix unless advised to personally. My computer is working better now, but I want to make sure my system is clean and I didn't inadvertently mess things up. Thanks.
