Internet Speed Fluctuations. Connection Drops when Playing Games

Q: Internet Speed Fluctuations. Connection Drops when Playing Games

Hello, thank you for taking the time to help me out with this problem.

A few days ago my internet started really acting up. Not the connection to the router, the speed would slow dramatically at random points and then come back up to normal speed.

I could deal with this except for the fact that I run youtube.com/grimandjakegames, a gaming YouTube channel. This problem has made me unable to play any online games without the internet connection failing. It will run fine for a while but then all of the sudden it just stops and then I'm disconnected from the server.

I've contacted my ISP but they don't seem to know anything and just had me reset my modem which did nothing.

The reason I am so confused is because nothing changed from when the internet was working fine to when it wasn't. This lead me to believe it was the ISP's problem but maybe some of you could help.

If you need any more info just reply below and I will try to help you out as best I can.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Recently I've started having trouble with my internet. It keeps fluctuating especially when I watch YouTube videos or when I play games; for a few moments I would get my normal connection, then a few seconds later the connection drops for a random amount of time, then comes back up again.
My specs: Wired connection; AT&T DSL; Linksys Router with Siemens Speedstream 4100 modem; Avast Anti-virus; Windows Firewall
I know my internet hardware and ISP are not the problem because none of the other computers in the household, wireless and wired, have this problem.
I attached my ipconfig to this post as well.

Any help with my issue is highly appreciated.

Hello idfian and welcome to Sevenforums!

Can you answer a few questions?
What modem/router (and is it Wifi or not) are you using and what is your internet speed? (You can test your speed at a place like speedtest.net)
When you say the 1st week was fine, were you gaming then? Or did you start trying to game after the 1st week?

Every 30 seconds to 2minutes, vista refreshes its network connection, this can cause lag in games such as WOW and other demanding applications that run off the internet. Some games have been
reported to even crash because of it, making some almost unplayable. But there are programs to change that safely and easily, and it will make everything internet wise, run smoother.

Both of these programs will fix that...and give you faster Online Games:
(only 1 is required...although i do recommend the first one)

The all mighty Vista Anti-lag:
(2 downloads, rar and exe available):

- Removing 'Lag Spikes' \ 'Lag Peaks'
- No dropouts with Skpye & VoiceOverIP
- Download stuff at full speed without any hassle.
- Less Lag in games and applications on Windows Vista
- Best thing is, its FREE!
Simply select your wireless card if not already selected, click activate VAL, and bye bye lag spikes.

Here is an Example of what this program does
While VAL is inactive, this is your general internet connection
But while activated, this is the result.
No spikes... and no more lagging because of them

My internet connection keeps freezing when I'm trying to play Diablo 3. I can't connect directly to the modem because it's my roommates internet and it's connected to her computer so my only option is wireless or to connect directly via adapter that goes through the power outlets in the house (which is what I use but still doesn't seem to help). Can anyone offer any advice on how to fix this? It's getting very annoying skipping around and it's almost impossible to play diablo 3 with this lag. I notice I drop a lot of packets when pinging to the diablo 3 server and I don't know why.

The deal with what's happening is I was able to run things at 60 fps and up, It was like this up until today, where everything involving games just dropped in fps. I go from 60 fps to a solid 30 or less. This is really annoying me because I can't find anything aobut this in the internet after hours of searching and the only solution I can find is just system rebooting the computer. I don't want to go through that 5+ hour process and that's why I'm here. Also I don't really want to hear the whole "restart your computer" sort of thing because that's usually what I have found. Any help at all is really appreciated. Please and thank you.

Hi and welcome to TSG.

Firstly, nobody other than you has any idea what we are working with at this stage!

Please provide the exact make and model of the machine, assuming its a prebuilt PC like a HP, Dell etc?

If it is a self / custom build, please provide make and model for the motherboard, CPU, RAM, Graphics, Hard Drive(s), Power Supply etc. The more info the better.

What operating system are you using and is it 32 or 64 bit?

Heya guys,

Since I've had a good experience with you guys helping me, I thought I'd run an issue by you which I've had forever now..

When I play certain games, I get massive FPS drops during playing. Games with which I'm having this problem currently (and thus, for certain) are Fallout 3, League of Legends, and Left 4 Dead 2

I've tried updating various drivers, killing processen in my task manager, disabling the windows page file, running programs like gamebooster and advanced system care, etc.. etc..

The weird thing is.. after a system reboot, it seems i get a few minutes (5 or so) of normal gaming.. no fps drops or anything.. but after about 5 minutes, they keep happening all the time.. about 20 seconds every minute or so.. even closing the game and restarting doesn't help anything, only a total system reboot seems to give me a little window of normal gameplay..

I've had this problem immediately after a fresh windows install a while ago.. after that, I haven't used this computer for a while because I was in the hospital for about a year for health problems, but now that I'm back the same problems are still there..

The FPS drops also appear to be totally random, and not while something in the game actually (appears) to be happening.. While just standing around in L4D2 and there's not even zombies coming at us.. I get massive fps drops for about 10-20 seconds every minute, making virtually every game unplayable..

Since I got the old gpu (AMD Radeon 6950) and the new power supply (700 watt) from my brother I have been having these problems. Diablo 3 had some fps drops while engaging a big wave of enemies and sometimes my computer had some problems that programs weren't responding.

I actually wanted to upgrade my computer for a while and was hoping to fix some of my problems I have been getting (Maybe the gpu was having some problems, because of age?).
So I got the: NVIDIA Geforce GTX 760 (MSI), a new motherboard : ASRock B75 Pro3-M (CPUSocket), a new RAM: 8,00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 665MHz and a new Hard Drive: 932GB Seagate ST1000DM003-1CH162 (SATA).
I kept my CPU: Intel Core i7 2600 @ 3.40GHz and my power supply: corsair cx750.

Since I have been using this build, my computer kept these problems and it has become even worse after 1-2 months. My league of legends started having really bad problems with having major fps drops to the 0-30 fps, sometimes it froze for a couple of seconds. I have been checking my temp for so far, because it's getting pretty warm in my room, but it never has been to a dangerous lvl and it got checked by some of my friends that have some knowledge about it, the highest my CPU got was about 60 degrees. I have tried to reinstall the client, but nothing helped.

I started playing World of warcraft aswell since a week ago and it was impossible for me to play. Fps keeps dropping from the 95 to 0-20. I noticed though when someone lvled up or someone joined somehow... Read more

Could be overheating or software issue. CPUs don't just die. On rare occasions with a heavy OC maybe. But modern CPUs as long as they are properly cooled will last. In fact a silicons chip lifespan is hundreds of years, OCing it would reduce it by what maybe 50%? By the time it dies it will already be obsolete.

I got this laptop from a friend of mine, he hasn't used it much lately but he used to play all kinds of games on it no problems.
The only two games I'v tried so far is World of Warcraft and League of Legends, but in both Ill be running perfectly fine and then just have sudden FPS drops from 60+ down to 3-10 every 30 seconds for 2-4 seconds. Just enough to make me stop what I'm doing completely. He reformatted it right before he gave it to me.

HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC
AMD Radeon HD 6620G
6gb ram

So far I'v updated the graphics drivers, currently says its 14.100 in device manager.
Checked the temps with SpeedFan, running about 30C not doing anything and 60C while playing games for awhile. Doesn't go any higher. Also, nothing is running in the backround and it does it with high or low settings in the games.

I don't think that's high for the temps and the driver should be right. I don't know what else could be causing an FPS drop like that unless a piece of hardware is going bad.

A:Random FPS drops while playing games.

Try setting your pc to high performance rather than ballanced in power mangment settings. It often works with Laptops. I myself had the same problem a few years back with a desktop, I cleared my whole computer and reinstalled the game, seemed to work, but it was more of a short term fix, ended up buying a new desktop. Hope you can get this sorted, I know how frustrating it is!

I've recently build a new computer but while playing games like battlefield 3 and tf2 I can get random framedrops.

For example, the first time I start battlefield 3 up after launching my pc I get nice a framerate of about 50-60, than after about 20 minutes I start to get framedrops to about 1-5 fps which are gone after 10 seconds. This happens about every 2 minutes and cause me to die, and lag behind. It doesn't matter if I have my setting on high or low, I get the very same result.

I've tried installing diffrent drivers for my graphics card (both normal and Beta drivers) and installing the latest drivers for all the other components.

I'm running a 1-month old windows 8 pro x64 installation.

Here are my specs:

AMD FX-8150 Black Edition
MSI R7850 Twin Frozr 2GD5/OC
Asrock 970 Extreme4
Corsair Vengeance 2x4Gb DDR3
Cooler Master GX 750W
Windows 8 Pro (build 9200)

M/B: 38.00 °C

Vcore: +1.320
12.00V +12.196

However as soon as a laptop is also plugged in also via ethernet and streams videos, the internet on my Windows XP computer is so slow, web pages can barely open.
Is there anyone to somehow make both of them at least able to both use the internet? What's the problem? Thanks in advance for any help

So when i start playing a game (e.g CS:GO) the games runs smoothly and all is good for about 15 minutes give or take. After that period of time my internet connection suddenly drops. If i only disable and enable my connection it will go back online but only for another 15 minutes or so if i start playing a game again. If i restart the pc i can play the game as much as i want without any problems.

In conclusion when i first start the pc after a long time of power off i get this problem but after the first restart it s all gone. I can't wrap my head around the source of this problem. Hope someone can help. Thanks!

I have fps drops in almost all games.

It's allways the same, the game starts with a very high fps (90 for example), but after a couple of minutes playing, the start dropping to 10 fp or less for one or two secons, and then going back to 90 fps. And keep repeating this each 10 seconds more or less, is imposible to play that way.

The computer has a Nvidia GeForce GTX 950M and should not have this issues in an old game like Darksiders 1 for exaple.

I have formatted the computer, I have installed correctly all the drivers, I have updated the BIOS version, I have run an antivirus, I have used Glary Utilities to clean up the computer, I have no processes running in background, I have the energy options changed to High Performance and I have declared the Nvidia graphic card to be used for all the processes.

Please, i beg you help to solve this because i don't know what else i can do...

I attach the HWMonitor results after 5 mins playing for in case it helps.

Some of you may recognize this; however, let me assure you it is not a double post, just a very similar model of computer to one that had the same problem for me not even a week ago! Unfortunately the BIOS flash located for me by Dave is not available for this computer as the model is ever so slightly different. I navigated to the support page for this model and ALAS there is only one BIOS flash and it is not an update, just the one I already have. Additionally it requires a floppy drive which this computer does not have but apparently came with (external).

ISSUE: Clock speed drops from 2.8ghz to 334mhz when video is played, unit recovers after video has been stopped a couple minutes. This computer is NOT likely to be overheating because the problem is identical to that of a PCG FRV26 unit that was solved with a BIOS flash. Unit is otherwise functioning perfectly and in lovely shape. I have only owned this machine a couple weeks.

BIOS: R0108k7
512mb RAM
up to 128 available to graphics (64 currently)
Radeon IGP 345m (Graphics, integrated)
2.8ghz P4 NOT hyperthreaded

Any help would be great, I would like to try the BIOS flash even though I don't think it will work if somebody can tell me how to get it to use a flash drive instead of a floppy or even make it an ISO or slip stream it with XP even, goodness, I'll reload the OS to fix this if I have to (yes the OS is fresh, reloaded it when I got it, has a recovery partition).

Hey guys, just an update:
I tore this computer apart, removed the processor and blew out all the dust checked all the fans etc. It didn't help I'm afraid. I knew it wasn't overheating, but I just had to be sure.

Any ideas? I'm not so much desperate as truly curious.

I got the logitech G5 mouse.

It started few months ago, it never happend before and i never had this problem even when i had 10 FPS in games, suddenly my mouse started to act weird
and at high fps it messes up my sensitivity randomly and diffrently X goes slow Y goes fast.

Its not mouse delay lag, when i play with higher then 40 fps it never happens and the sensitivity is perfect but at around 25~30fps the reaction isnt that sharp and its like my DPI drops to 1000 from 2000 for few seconds
then goes back to 2000 randomly and i know how the low fps affects the mouse and its really not it, its like my setpoint options going nuts or something.
Sometimes it even go wierder like moving the crusor left goes 400 DPI right up and down are 2000.

The mouse itself is clean and the laser is on a cloth mouse pad same as it was for the past 12 months i had the mosue without any problems.

Explained in DPI so you'll know what im talking about regarding the sensitivity levels so ignore it.

Please tell me what could cause this, I suspected that it is the drivers or the CPU but i already updated the drivers to the latest version and the CPU doesnt reach 100% while that happens.

I can connect to the internet and browse but after anywhere from a minute to ten minutes my connection speed drops or i get disconnected all together. I only have this problem at school in my dorm.
It works fine on my wifi at home and in other buildings on campus. I know nothing is wrong with my dorm building because my roommate who also uses windows 7 has no problems connecting and staying connected.
I have talked to the I T dept. at school and they didnt help much at all. I have run a Malwarebytes full scan and it didnt find anything. I have disabled McAfee and the problem still persists. I have also changed all settings on my wifi card to the most aggressive possible and disabled all power saving options.
When i run a diagnostic on my connection while im having problems i generally get one of two errors.
"the connection between your access point, router, or cable modem and the internet is broken" or
"the default gateway is not available"
If i get the second error it says its been fixed and my connection will speed up again for about another 5 minutes and then the cycle repeats.

If anyone has any ideas on what it could be please let me know because im pretty good with computers and this has me completely stumped

Hi there,

We can have a look at your signal strength. Please download, install and run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector.
To run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector, double click the Xirrus icon on your Desktop, you may use the Windows 7 snipping tool to crop or Paint by tapping the Print screen key on your keyboard, open up Paint (Click on Start>All Programs>Accessories>Paint) then choose Edit from the Menu and select Paste, then save it and please attach the file on your next post.

Hi all,

So my connection keeps constantly dropping when I'm doing anything more taxing than just browsing forums, ie watching youtube or downloading. I keep resetting the router and it keeps dropping and the back-and-forth goes on until it resets completely to where I have to go to the ISP page and reboot the router.

When the connection drops, all the lights on the router stay on. The DSL, the PPP and the ethernet which just starts blinking every second.

The weird thing is at times the connection wont drop at all, even if I'm utilizing the full speed of my internet, which is 10Mbps. The time between drops varies. Sometimes it takes a minute, sometimes as soon as I attempt to reload a page with a video or stream it immediately drops.
I tried winsock, ip release/renew and probably a bunch of other stuff, like checking on the resource monitor (the only two processes I didn't recognize were DasHost.exe and rdpc2.exe)

I'm using a belkin modem + wireless router. When the wireless connection speed is 54mbps,i can surf the web.But it often drops to 24mbps and sometimes even 1mbps.When it does this,i cant surf the web.Every time this happens i need to repair my connection. After that I would be able to surf for a few minutes. Then the speed drops again.I'd have to repeat the same thing over and over again. And my pc which is connected via ethernet connection directly to the modem/router works just fine.

When i called belkin's tech support they asked me to change from WPA to WEP.After i did this the problem became worse. My laptop cant even connect to the router.I dont know whether it's the router or the dsl connection.Bcoz i've used linksys and netgear before and the same problem occurred back then but not as frequent as now.

Hey guys,

A friend of mine is having some problems with his internet connection in bandwidth-intensive games.

He described the problem, as seen below:

"An example of my problem was when I was playing Point of Existence 2 the other day. If I stood still, my ping was 17, but if I ran or moved I spiked to an average of over 300, sometimes in the 500 range. I was play Battlefield 2 Vanilla and was hitting 700+. I cant even play some of the 64 person Allied Intent maps on single player, ping is real bad, a slide show thats worse than playing online. I have no problems with surfing the internet or on TS, I'm clear there. The problem only exists on BF2 related games. I play Company of Heroes or C&C and theres no issues, at least not in single player. In COH, I get a " Having problems with your connection to Relic Online" and " Can not connect with others players". Then I get disconnected."

After doing an internet speed test he got the following results:

"Heres my results. It means nothing to me

Download: 3,832,000 bps
Upload: 415,312 bps
QOS: 73%
RTT: 41 ms
MaxPause: 125 ms

I did this 4 times, the QOS changed 4 times

I will bet you are running "homegroup". It has connectivity issues on some mixed systems. You can verify it is the problem by setting up a new network connection using workgroup instead. If it fixes the problem you can disable IPv6 and kill homegroup.

I have an abit IP35 pro motherboard and since abit is out of business, I am forced to use 3rd party utilities. Abit's old drivers cause bluescreens in win7. I would use the default BIOS fan speed controller, but it makes changes fan speed constantly and the noise is annoying.

So I turned the BIOS control off, and downloaded speedfan. I set the PWMs on the Winbond controller to manual but I can't get control of the fan. As it is, with the BIOS fan controller turned off, the CPU fan stays at 2200 RPM at all times.

There is a device in the device manager that I have disabled (because of the bluescreens), the Uguru chip thing. I wonder if it doesn't work because that's disabled?

Any ideas?

What speed do you get with a computer plugged into the first router with a known good ethernet cable?

What speed do you get with the same computer plugged into the same LAN port on the first router with the long cable used between routers?

Hi, I am using an HP Envy 15t-j100 laptop, and I noticed that every time I play games, my CPU speed drastically decreases from 3.3gHz to 1.8gHz. Can anyone explain to me if this is normal, or if there is any way to fix this? My laptop is always set to Maximum Performance, and it is plugged in. Thank you so much

I have a dual monitor setup and I try to keep my downloads running on one of my monitors (with bit torrent or just regular downloads) while I try to play a game, even an offline game, and my download speed will immediately drop to say 20 or 30kbps where it was downloading at least 200kbps not a second before I was running the game. If I minimize the game I can watch the download speed dramatically return to normal 200kbps, putting the game back on top of course drops it back down. What the heck is going on? How do I fix this? I've already tried reformatting. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hoping someone can help.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop running Windows XP with a wireless connection to a broadband router.

Several weeks ago my laptop started dropping the internet connection randomly (I'm alos unabel to access email when this happens).

My wireless network icon in my toolbar shows the connection as 'Excellent' but for some reason both Internet and Email is not available. The only way to fix the problem has been to restart my laptop which is very frustrating.

I've noticed that this also happens randomly when I'm at home (using different wireless broadband modem) so I think the issue is my laptop not the 2 x routers/modems.

I'm running NOD32 for security as well (but have been for 4 years now with no problems till now).

Please help.

We recently bought a new LG internet tv. Ever since then we have had major issues with our internet.

Whenever it is turned on the internet speed drops significantly, making it near impossible to watch a video online. I have read somewhere that this could be due to the TV causing interference with the wifi but the strange thing is, it even stops me from going online on my xbox which is connected straight to the router by ethernet cable.

The effect is so immediate and obvious that I can be streaming netflix on my xbox, hear the tv get turned on in the other room, and instantly get disconnected from live or the video starts trying to buffer forever.

We don't actually use the internet function on the tv and the problem remains whether it is connected to our router or not.

The TV is approximately 5-7 metres away and a direct line from it to the router would go through a wall and a door.

Any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Apologies in advance if I have posted this in the wrong section, I wasn't sure where to post it.

So basically how the title is.

My internet would drop out/freeze. Router doesn't indicate any change in service. I plug my laptop into the modem, and have prime speeds.

Restart the router. Works for awhile.
Reinstalled the firmware manually on the router.
Set the Channel off of "Auto" and put on various options of 9, 10, 11 to avoid clashes with other networks.

Freezes. Now the router indicates there's no connection. Drag the cord out of modem and test. Prime speeds.

Okay, screw this - I went and bought a new router yesterday because, sure, that Belkin one was 2-3 years old. Set it up with same channel settings, etc.

I have a laptop that runs a VPN (for work) that uses it, plus multiple iphones (3) and ipads (2) an AppleTV and a Samsung smart TV.

Like, help me please here.

A:Internet Drops Out, Consistent Speed with Modem, New Router - no solution

OK, but lets solve on thing at a time 1) ignore the VPN at work and let's get the home router stabilized.
The mobile devices are difficult to diagnose, so 2) stick with the PC for now.

Standard questions:

did you update the ethernet & wifi drivers on the PC?
have you looked to ensure your new router has the latest firmware?
*if* you have a DSL connection to the ISP, do you have the line filters on EVERY device connected to the phone line EXCEPT the line to the modem? *MUST HAVE*
Got to get these right first.

THEN, find the MTU that's right for you AT HOME and set that into the new router:

get a command prompt
ping -l 1500 -f
as long as you see Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set., reduce the 1500 by 8 and iterate with the new number
:: record the MTU that works for your ISP at home
The router conf page is accessible using your browser and HTTP://your_router_address/
You need the router password
set the new MTU. Also set a new router password and save the settngs.

The wired connection should be solid at this point.

The wifi should also be better, as long as you avoid other stations with the same channel.
I assume you've see the post re inSSIDER for wifi setup.

You can check if variable fan speed is working, monitor temps using Speedfan.

Just recently I started to have a problem where my processor speed would drop from its usual standpoint (1.9GHz) to this (600MHz). I can't play any games with it all the way down there and I have no clue what is causing it. I have never had this problem before and the only significant changes I have made recently would be a change to Spyware Doctor Antivirus as my main Anti Spyware/Etc program.

I just updated and rebuilt my PC and have reinstalled Win 7 64 bit and am constantly getting a BSOD while using the PC. Specifically while downloading/installing/playing games. I have also had the error occur just while surfing the internet.
From the program Blue Screen Viewer it seems to be caused by ntoskrnl.exe+7f1c0 and/or ntoskrnl.exe+7e769
I can not find any solution to fix this issue, I have updated drivers, I have ran the Microsoft memory checker, , I have changed out my memory, tried 2 other video cards, tried two different wireless network cards, now on wired connection, I even changed motherboards, got the errors on both SSD and HDD. The only things I haven't changed out is the PS and CPU, since I am using the PC to write this I am ruling out the CPU as the issue.

I have used Memtest86 and prime95 to test the memory and CPU, nothing is coming back with errors or issues. I did run driver verifier and got two .dmp files for some specific files but not sure what to do with those now. They are included in the attachement

It seems to be software/driver issue but I can not figure it out.

Any help would be great, thanks!

A:BSOD downloading games/playing games/using internet 0x00000007F

Your reports are not definitive and educated guess says that this is the cause of your problem
What is the asushwio.sys file?
Make a system restore point and then uninstall the associated software or update driver.

Hi I am new to your forums but from what I read on various topics I can see some smart peeps are here to help...I have seen some threads on my issue but I am super new to computers. I can not get connection to the net but the globe in the bottom right is on so it seems I have connection. My lights are blinking on my Cable Modem as well. I have tried to unplug and reset the modem as well but that did not help. My Internet was working fine until about 1 week ago. The Comcast Cable guy came out and stated everything is ok with my line. Reasons why my connection is not working stated at least in Vista is DNS error or can't connect to ISP...I know this has happened alot but has anyone fixed it?

A:Internet Drops not Connection now

Turn off the computer. Plug modem and router for 20 minutes. Turn on router and let it cycle for 5 minutes. Turn on router and let it cycle for 5 minutes. Turn on computer.

in the search box type CMD and hit OK
In black box, type IPconfig/all and see if your DNS servers are listed.

I've been having this problem for a while now. My internet connection just drops randomly and then comes back on in a few seconds. It has been occurring more frequently since a couple months ago.

I'm running windows xp, have a d-link router, at&t as my isp.

Im a gamer so this is really a bothersome thing. I noticed it started to occur when I had some spyware issues, I believe it was megatoolbar or something like that. I have gotten rid of it though. Is that maybe still the problem?

Could someone please take a look at my HJT log. I think I got infected with tcpipmon.exe about a week back. I followed instructions to get rid of it and since then my internet connection crashes after about 5 or 10 minutes of starting up the computer. This happens every time I reboot. I looked at my network connections and it shows it all to be fine. MSN messenger and my email client both continue to work ok. I tried mozilla firefox but it was exactly the same result. I confess to having a go myself and have ran smitfraud fix and vundo fixes. I have ran various spyware scans but they don’t show anything resembling a problem to cause this. I would be eternally grateful for someone to take a look at the attached HJT log and tell me if they see anything that shouldn’t be there. I’m resisting the temptation to dabble further until someone has an expert look…thanks

Hi all. I usually figure things out on my own, but I am having a bit of trouble with this one. I'm SUSPECTING a network issue. Nutshell: Format & reinstall Win XP SP2, dual-boot Ubuntu 8.10 (different partition). In XP, no ethernet driver to get to the NIC card and access internet on install. Found driver for NIC. Installed. Internet works for a minute or so, then slows to nothing. Close browser, re-open, SOMETIMES will work again, mostly does not. I use IE, Maxthon, Avant, all fresh downloads. All are IE "wrappers". Happens on all of them. Installed Firefox for testing. Newest browser. Internet works good for a while, then PERIODIC slowing to nothing on Firefox. Here we go again.

Here's why I suspect network: I was having this trouble after a fresh install of XP and JUST installing the NIC driver. No firewall, no antivirus, no other programs installed. It caused me to do a fresh reformat & reinstall, just in case, this time with a different NIC driver. Same problem. I'm just rolling with it now. Before the format & reinstall, the internet had ZERO issues. Same computer, same everything. Which is why this is so frustrating.

Here's the other booger: if I use Ubuntu, I can roll on Firefox and the internet all night long without the slightest hiccup.

So, this is telling me that the HARDWARE is okay, but I suspect there is a software or setting problem somewhere along the way.

I don't know what will be pertinent info for this one... Read more

Hello guys. I have come to this forum a couple of times to get out of tough situations. Great site!!!

I have tried to find a thread that is close to the problem i have but could not find one.

My internet connection drops for no reason (of course there is a reason but ya know..) i will be using it and it drops.

Now i will give you some background on my setup. I have a SMC 7004VBR router with two computers hooked up to it. Now when the internet is 'down' i can still surf on the other computer, but not on mine. I've been away from home so i forget if I was able to log into the router setup screen or not. I beilive i couldn't.

When i reset the router, (by pulling the plug, not pushing in the little button thingy) my connection comes back on after the router is done 'booting up'.

Just wonering if there was a way to stop this from occuring?

Thanks for reading and helping!!

A friend of mine is running Outlook Express on a DSL connection. He can surf and download just fine. When he enters OE and checks mail, after a minute or so, the internet connection goes dead. Any ideas?

A:OE drops internet connection

Check to make sure OE is not set to disconnect after send and receive.
Thats what it sounds like is happening.

In OE, Tools - Options - Connection.
Uncheck "hang up after sending and receiving"
