I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I bought the logitech 5.1 x-540 speakers recently and need a sound card for my laptop to fully use the surround sound. I don't want to spend a lot of my on one so I am thinking of buying one off ebay. Its some generic cheap chinese one and its 10 bucks.

Is it possible for the sound quality to get worse using a sound card? Like when i use my laptop and use the speakers i dont hear any hissing even at max volume so is it possible i would (hear hissing) if i use this cheap sound card from ebay?

Is there a very noticeable difference in low end sound cards and high end sound cards for someone who isn't an audiophile like me?

A:Cheap sound card for laptop to use 5.1 Logitech x-540 speakers question

A cheap generic sound card? Yes, the sound could be worse potentially. If there is a sound quality difference, you'll likely notice it more the louder you play it. I also would be concerned if adequate drivers and decent sound control software would be available for a cheap card.

BTW, is this a USB sound device?

So I had vista installed on my new PC but it was so buggy that I decided to put XP back on instead. However, now I can't seem to get the speakers working. I can get headphones to work when playing certain games, but I get no sounds from anything else and the speakers won't play any sound at all. When I try to play a song in Windows media player, I get the following error message:

I figure that I must need sound drivers or something. I'm running an Asus P5N-E SLI motherboard. I've tried downloading sound drivers from various places including Asus' site, but every time I try to install new sound drivers I get the following error message:

I'd like to buy a set of 5.1 surround speakers, but I don't know wether my sound card is able to make 5.1 speakers work, and I can't seem to find the answer by googling...
So, I used Everest to identify my sound car : it seems I've got two :

then I went to the Settings Panel, and Realtek won't let me choose Surroun instead of Stereo :
so I went to the sound settings and got this, which seems to indicate my Nvidia sound card isn't activated?! :

So, my question is : does my sound card have the ability to make 5.1 speakers work, and if yes, how should I proceed?

Hi all,

I just bought an old Toshiba A210 laptop and I'm dealing with a couple of (minor) problems. As the title says, I've tried every conceivable control, I can't get any sound from the speakers. No hissing sound, nothing, completely silent. Headphones work fine though.

I checked device manager and drivers, it's a Realtek driver, I went to Toshiba and saw that I have the latest driver for Win 7.

Any ideas what kind of problem this is? hardware probably?

This laptop had Win 7 Ultimate installed over Vista.

I probably need to try some nice USB speakers anyway though

Not sure what that is, but are you sure it updated the driver? Check device manager for the driver date. If older than it should be, I can tell you how to manually force install new driver.

Hey guys, Um, I have a problem here. I just got my computer back from getting repaired and installed with a new motherboard. A Gigabyte board, model "EP43-UD3L". Now, none of my speakers work, not my old Hi-Tex ones, and not my logitech ones. I even plugged my MP3 headphones into the jack and it doesn't pick up the sound. I look at the volume on the computer, and it shows that there is sound coming from it. no muting, no low volume either. Is there something wrong with this new motherboard? Do I need another driver or something? I really need help. I just bought mass effect 2, and Im itching to play it :\

I'm not sure why I'm having this problem, but I would like some advice on hooking up a TV Output (or GameCube) to Logitech Z-680 Speakers. The 4-page manual says that you need to get an adapter for the Red/White RCA cables into the green speaker cable, but that it will only be front speakers. I've tried using a Y-adapter: inputs of 2 RCA cables, output 1, then using an RCA-to-Mini-Stereo Plug adapter into the front speaker direct port (the green one), however this gives me 2-speaker sound, even on games I know are Pro Logic II-enabled. The only adapter I was able to find in stores was a Radio Shack "Stereo-to-Mono Audio Adapter: Accepts mono phono plug, Fits 1/8" stereo phone jack". The store personnel said that there may be adapters which are stereo, but they didn't sell them.

Speakers are, well, not my area of expertise (more into computers). Needless to say, I'm not quite sure what the proper way to hook up analog RCA sound to these speakers is. Any help?

Also, is there any noticable sound difference between connecting to a sound card with the 6-Channel direct Analog option and digital optical ports? The manual suggests using the analog cables included for 6-Channel direct, and that's what I am doing, but I'm quite able to switch to digital optical sound if it's reasonably better.

I have Logitech Z4 speakers that are configured using SoundMax software. The problem is my son pulled out the jack (which is green) and when I put it back in the green socket on the computer the SoundMAx software kicks in asking what i connected, but it doesnt have the option of what I have (2 speakers and a woofer) 2:1 I believe.

The only options it offers are: 5:1, 7:1, Quad Speakers, Stereo speakers or stereo headphones.

I plugged it into the green jack and selected 5:1 but get feedback through the woofer. If I put it in the orange socket, I get sound out of only one speaker.

I have tried various other configs but either get no sound out of the front speakers, the feedback or am back to square one.

If someone could help me with this problem, to get sound using the whole speaker set up it would be much appreciated.

As a note, the front speakers plug into the woofer using phono jacks and the woofer has the lead/jack plug for the computer.

Many thanks,

Hi,I can't work out why my 5.1 system no longer works.
I was running Win 8.1 and my surround sound worked fine, but since I have started studying for the Windows 7 Microsoft exam I thought I should go back to Win 7.
So installed Win 7 Ultimate x64, everything is up to date and everything is working fine except now the surround sound does not work.
When i go into Control Panel and then Sound, select 5.1 and test each speaker, the center, sub, left and right rear speaker sound just comes out of either the front left or right speaker. Nothing I do seems to fix it.

I have removed all sound drivers and let them re-install one by one but the result is always the same.
On Win 8.1 the system had the Realtek High Definition Driver, so installed that and still does not work.

The laptop is a HP Elitebook 8540w and have tried the driver from HP download site which is an IDT High Def driver but the result is still the same.

My speakers 3 outputs connect to a little external sound card, which in turn connects to the laptop via USB. I know this system works as it had been working fine for many months on Win 8.1.

You can see the external sound card/box here...

Hi everyone,

I have the sound card and speakers listed in my computer specs part of profile -

The sound card I'm using is a VERY nice one, has full support for 5.1 speakers and a myriad of other things.

I've been using these speakers for a while now and they worked perfectly, few days ago they stopped functioning properly - now only the front left/right speakers play, the center, back left, and back right do not play.

Everything is plugged in, I've triple checked or more.

Any ideas? All drivers are sufficiently installed.

Oh two more things... the bass is feeling a bit pathetic too...

AND I have an application (sound card driver really) that can test each speaker, and when I use it and click the back left/right/front center speaks they work fine.

I have set my winamp, all my games, media player, even under sound in control panel to 5.1 sound and its just not using it.

Hello all.
I bought the Z506 today for ?55 for my PC but for some reason 2 of the speakers and the surround sound system with the 2 speakers buillt in do not work.
I have them all connected up correctly on my Gaming PC.

Is the black and orange socket thing on the end of the black wire for surround system is this why it isn't working? Maybe my motherboard does not support surround system?

But if I take out the orange and black socket/wire from the back of the bass the speakers work fine but very fuzzy except from the main speaker with the volume control on.

Now correct me if I am wrong should music be played in all speakers or do 1 or 2 speakers just do a fuzzy noise?

Hi, I just got some logitech x530 5.1 speakers, and like them so far, but can't get surround sound to work, only stereo. I have integreated realtek 7.1 audio.

I have tested the speakers with the test utilty on my other pc, and they all work right.

For some reason I can't get to the sound utilty on my pc I'm trying to install this on. I used to have a "sound effect" icon near the clock, but then I removed it when I cleaned up my icons, and now I can't find a way to access the utility. I tried to install the sound drivers again, but it didn't seem to help.

I think my sound issue is also due to the fact my version of powerdvd 5 is limited, since it only lists stereo as a sound option, and 6 speaker is blanked out. So, do I have to shell out $40 for the full version of powerdvd6? Is powerdvd the one I should get, or is windvd better?

Another option I though of would be for me to just get a soundblaster live, or audigy 2 value, etc, since they probably come with a dvd playing software program that can handle surround sound(correct me if I'm wrong about that).

If I would get a sound card, should I get a creative brand? I've heard they're a pain, that you have to keep the original cd, just to install updates off the net, is that true? If so, which other brands are ok. I've seen a card based on via's envy 24, is that good?

So, I have several problems, if anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.

Yesterday, my system had some update and the day after my speakers topped working.
The device is plugged with plugs and not a usb and there is no driver.
I tried to search for the drivers. But their site says:

Software is not needed for this product.

I tried to search for a solution on the internet, such as uninstalling and updating my driver. Windows 10 did recognize my device in the playback devices category.
I reset all my windows 10, and now it doesnt recognize that I have an audio input. It does however recognize my steelengine headphones that have a driver for them.
Where is the fault? There isnt much I can do! I unplugged and plugged the speakers.. and there was no result. If windows drivers and manufacturers drivers dont help me.. how can I recognize the device and make it work? or is it a hardware problem and I should
buy new speakers?

I just bought a new Logitech Z-560 set, which comes with 4 satellite speakers and a subwoofer. After connecting everything, the two rear speakers are only making a kind of hissing noise, while playing NO sounds at all. The front two speakers are playing music, which sounds bit distorted, but the subwoofer is giving off this loud annoying sound. It sounds like this deep bass sound that just won't go away, it's a constant deep bass sound. I connected the speakers to my sound card, which I believe is only 2-channel. Does 2-channel mean that I can only get 2 speakers to work, not 4? Any ideas why the woofer is making this annoying sound? I turned down the bass but it doesn't help. The front 2 speakers don't even play sounds clearly either.

Once I plug my headphones in or my hearing aids bluetooth device in, it all goes south. The internal speakers continue to work as does the bluetooth, but nothing is coming out of the headphones. Since I was once in IT, this problem is unique to the jack itself. Either the jack lifted up or was pushed back and never properly tested. The hook, I just received this computer 3 weeks ago to replace a faulty HDMI out port. I was told that there would be an open ticket so if I had any problems with this computer it would be attended to. Unfortunately, that is not the case.

A:On-board speakers are scratchy but external speakers & headphones sound good?

Hello. As a test, switch from the IDT audio driver to the Windows native audio driver.
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "IDT High Definition Audio Device".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.[To get back to the IDT driver, do it again but reverse the names in steps 2 and 7.]
If you get the noise while using the native driver then it is not a driver issue, which would mean there is a strong chance of speaker failure, particularly since the noise is not in headphones. If you would like to replace the speakers I can point you to the service manual.

Hi guys, just reinstalled windows 7. everything works great, then I went to paly a file and to my surprise, no sound. Tested speakers on another device, they work. Sound card drivers are working and up to date.

It seems that the computer is falsely sensing that there is a plug in the headphone jack, which could mean that the sensor has failed. See the Headphone Jack FAQ.
Another test you could try is to switch between the Realtek audio driver and the Windows native driver. If the speakers don't work with either driver, that's a good sign of a hardware defect.
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. I've been through DOZENS of sites & posts, following all the advice - enabeling the HD sound option, updating drivers, rebooting - I can't even remember most of it, there's been so much I bought a 3.5mm cable but this hasn't worked. I tried the red and white plugs aswell (sorry, can't remember what they're called) but they didn't work either. I even went so far as to buy a seperate sound card, but this is having the same problem - the external speakers work fine, so I know it's not the pc thats the problem, but I can't get sound from the tv.
One post (somewhere) suggested that the BIOS isn't configured correctly. I'm starting to think this is correct, as both onboard and seperate sound won't work. But the external speakers work, so is it the tv? I don't think it is though, because I had the same problem with my kids pc last year (another Zoostorm, different brand LCD).
I'm at my wits end here This pc is meant for watching movies etc. and is kind of useless atm. If I can't get this working, I'll have to replace t... Read more

I have windows 7 64bit Ultimate and have a very strange issue. I have no sound and have read through forums without sucsess!! the only way I have been able to get any sound at all is to swap to 5.1 mode and plug speakers into the rear out! and guess what! all I get is the rear out. ITS DRIVING ME NUTS!!! before you say "go and download the realtek windows 7 drivers " i have done that and yes I have also connected to windows update and tried that also. In stereo mode - nothing... in quad mode .... nothing ..... 5.1 no other channel but rear out works (outputting rear sound out) any other mode. nothing!!!! BTW I have no front sound jacks plugged in to the mobo would that be a cause?

Hardware is Gigabyte GA-K8N-Sli modo with on board sound. Its running AC97
(link to mobo GIGABYTE - Product - Motherboard - Overview - GA-K8N-SLI)

A:Only Rear speakers work?? NO SOUND!!

I got exactly the same problem. Using realtek drivers only the rear speakers work. using MS drivers, centre and subwoofer work but not front/rear.

Did you manage to solve?

Recently I opened up my computer for the first time since I've bought it (I bought it in like August '08 or so) and I took all the casing off just to put in another hard drive for my friend because he wanted to save everything from his hard drive and put it on my hard drive.. Anyways, at once we let it run without the casing and the sound was working perfect, then when we unplugged everything, took out the hard drive, and put the casing back on, then turned it on, the sound stopped working.. I only noticed this the following day. I have a subwoofer and two speakers.. Now the cable in the back of the main part of the entire set of speakers (aka the subwoofer and where I can turn up the volume up and down and even scan for the radio) is very sensitive (the cable which has a weird ending and you have to put it in a certain way and then you have to press on two things to make the cord go in properly), and I have a hard time getting both speakers two work, so usually my left speaker always works.. Well when I plug in the entire set (which is just the one cord from the speaker into the computer), there is no sound. BUT when I plug in my iPod headphones into the computer, there is sound. BUT when I plug in my iPod shuffle into the speakers, the speakers work! I'm highly confused, as this just happened to happen AFTER we were moving around the computer a lot and what not, which makes me wonder.

So in general, my speakers are working and are turned on, my sound card se... Read more

Hello Harry Hood. I recently posted a problem I was having with my Harmon Kardon HK695-01 speaker system. Is a sound card or any other piece of hardware necessary for the speakers to work on my HP desktop pc?

Hey, I'm having some issues getting my 5.1 speaker system to produce sound in all 5 speakers simultaneously. There are 3 plugins that go from my speakers to my sound card: orange, black, and green. There are 6 slots on my sound card excluding firewire, 3 of which are probably input jacks.

So here's the problem: no matter what combination of plugging in the 3 plugins to any of the 6 jacks, I can't get sound to be produced in more than 2 speakers at a time. Some combinations cause only the middle speaker to produce sound, while others cause sound to be produced only in one left and one right speaker.

I've found that plugging any of the plugins to the 3rd jack causes sound to be produced in 2 speakers, which is the best I am able to do with any combination, so the other 2 plugins are effectively useless.

So does anyone have a solution to this? I should also note my sound card is NOT color coded in any way, but it doesn't really matter cause I've tried every possible combination of plugging in the 3 cords.

By the way, my speakers are LOGITECH X-530 5.1 70-WATT SPEAKERS and my sound card is CREATIVE SOUND BLASTER AUDIGY 2 ZS 7.1.

A:Need help with speakers and/or sound card

You will ALWAYS plug the front left and right speakers into the GREEN. usually orange is subwoofer and black is back l/r. Make sure you have configured it correctly with the software that came with your card.
Oh, and it might help if you usually 5.1 surround is only used in 3d games and movies.
(to make it work in games visit the sound settings and select 3d audio.)

hi do i need a sound card to have speakers? (please don't email me as it is down) thank you

A:speakers & sound card?

You don't need a sound card to have speakers.

You don't need a sound card to listen to speakers if those speakers are not connected to your PC.

If the speakers are connected to your PC and you want to listen to them, yes, you need a working sound card or integrated sound chip.

yep, that's about it .... SOUND is not working
I can hear sound if I use headphones... but when I unplug the headphones, I get nothing from the speakers.

This is a Dell Inspiron Laptop E1505 running Windows XP/55G HD/ 1G RAM

Sigma Tel audio - I ran "Driver Detective" driver-scan software, and it says that my sound drivers are up to date.

I've scanned for viruses

I've scanned for spyware w/three different pieces of software (spybot, malware-bytes, adaware08).. all are current

Any suggestions are welcome!!! This is a client's computer and I've already had it several days.... I need it to move!

What am I missing? ( and yes, the volume is up and it is not muted.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

So Recently I got a new computer its an Acer. It only has one jack for headphones and microphones and usually when I plug one in it works fine and asks me to clarify which I'd like to use. I switch between headphones and microphone a lot so its a very useful tool for me. Though recently when I plug it in it no longer gives me the option to choose and no sound plays from the headphones and it instead plays from the speakers whether its plugged in or not. It also dims the sound a bit when they're plugged in so I think it decided I was mainly/only going to use microphone and set it to a mic one regardless of what's plugged in. I'm not very tech savvy but I tried my best to fix it. I tried other headsets, It is the same. I tried half plugging it in or fiddling with it, Its the same. I tried going into the sound playback list and seeing if it was disabled and it is not, It does not even show headphones as an option though it does show 'speaker's. I tried messing around in those settings and restoring them to default and nothing worked. I also tried going to the mic settings. For the mic settings there is two different options, 'microphone' which I assume is the one I usually plug in (since I can just plug my mic in and it works now) and stereo mix. I'v tried disabling the mic and enabling stereo mix and vise verse and tried restoring to default and tried making it forget about the mic and putting it back on and nothing is working and I really would like to use my headset since I l... A:No sound coming from headphones but speakers work

Try a reinstall and see if it fixes the problem. Go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for your sound device (Could be Realtek, Conexant, etc) and then LEFT click "Uninstall". DO NOT uninstall the drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. This fixes a lot of corruptions and may fix your problem.

In reference to the Stereo Mix, that should be set as the default Recording device. Then if you use the mic it will be heard, or if you want to record audio from the Internet you must have the Stereo Mix.

hello all,

I have been having this problem for a long time. Hope someone can provide me with some guidelines and suggestions.

I'm using a Sound Blaster Live! Value sound card and PC-Works FourPointSurround FPS1000 under WinXP Pro SP1. When I play mp3 or other media files (under winamp or WMP), the sound output will become distorted occasionally (a loud buzz sound that lasts for approximately 1 second) after the installation of the latest driver (Sound Blaster Live! - LiveDrvUni-Pack (English) dated 28 Feb 03)

The sound card and speaker system work fine with the initial driver that comes with WinXP. However, the 2 rear speakers cannot be recognized with that driver. In order to take advantage of the full surround system, I believe I must install the Creative package (driver, AudioHQ and etc.)

I have also tried to install the driver and program (AudioHQ, Mixer and etc.) from the original CD that comes with the card. However, when I try to access AudioHQ, it yields the error "Fail to initialize Mixer" and the program will shut down automatically. It had worked in Win98SE but it does not work for me under WinXP. The new versions installed through Sound Blaster Live! - LiveDrvUni-Pack (English) do not have these problems.

I have tried the following attempts but to no avail
- set volume to different level
- set Reverb and Chorus to different level under EAX Control Panel; turned off all effects
- change my latency level in CMOS
- change the sound card to anothe... Read more

I have a strange problem after re-installing Window 7 Home Premium onto a new Transcend SSD, having altered the BIOS drive mode to ACHI. All my data was backed up and re-installed with little trouble. But now I can't play music on WMP or anything else, and there are no system sounds at all.

I thought at first it was a matter of settings, and have altered everything I can think of, to no avail. I have uninstalled and re-installed all the sound devices, updated all the drivers I can see, and nothing works. However the restored files themselves are not corrupted, as I can hear them (and the system sounds) by plugging in earphones. The (Creative) speakers test properly in Control Panel. Also, Windows Media Centre does play and record TV, with normal sound. One USB device is shown as not starting, but I think it's the volume control for the speakers and it has always worked even when shown thus.

The MOBO is an AsusTek M2N68-VM, and Device Manager also shows under Sound, video and game controllers a TV card (USB), High Def Audio Device (Windows basic?), Nvidia HDMI Audio Device, and VIA High Def Audio, which I think is the one that matters.

Can anyone help me before I throw the SSD away and re-install everything as it was before!

A:Speakers and WMC work, but can't play any other sound files

Hello and welcome excessive now do the speakers work on another machine or sound device?

Are they connected by USB or the jack I can't quite make out how from your description and also the Creative speakers did they come with any form of software if so what is the model number of them.

Now I am assuming you have updated the driver for audio but from what source - I am not a fan of the Windows feature and always use the board or the actual manufactures site for drivers such as that.
The one you want is this one for that update http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M2N68VM/HelpDesk_Download/

I am not sure of what the NVidia Sound Device you mention is though? as I can find no mention of it on the Asus site.

I think you should also look at what version of the BIOS you have installed too and I am assuming you know the risks of updating the BIOS so be careful.

Hi All, I have a HP ENVY Notebook - 17-k200na which runs Windows 10 with Beats Audio As of last night the laptop is refusing to play any sound via the built in speakers.Headphones work fine (both Bluetooth and wired) and it seems that the PC isn't recognising that the headphones have been removed. I'm not sure if its caused by a hardware or software issue. I have updated, uninstalled and reinstalled the sound drivers to no avail.  When searching this issue online most people advise a work around, in which in the playback devices settings you disable headphones and set speakers as default device. However, even with the most up to date drivers my speakers and headphones are displayed as 1 single device.  Further to this I have seen you can disable Jack detection in Realtek HD Audio Manager. Unfortunately, whenever i try and run HD Audio Manager the window immediately closes and Beats opens in its place. Beats Audio (at least my version) has next to no settings and this option is not available to me.  Any advice would be great. A link to a new version of Beats software could be advantageous if one exists. Any other work arounds also welcome.

Checked volume and mute.
Checked playback device area and laptop speakers are enabled and indicated as functioning. Only headphones work.
Deleted Audio card from Device manager and rebooted.
Windows found latest driver and reinstalled.
Same problem, sound in headphones only.....not in laptop speakers.
I restored system to point 2 weeks ago and still no sound.

A:HP620 No sound from speakers only headphones work

Welcome to Seven Forums NJTeddy. Generally the way the headphone jack works is there is basically a switch inside the headphone jack that shitches off the speakers when the headphones are plugged in. This switch may be stuck. I would try playing some audio you can hear on the headphones, then slide the headphone jack in and out slowly, see if you get any audio through the speakers at all. it may just be plugging and unplugging a few times will fix it.
