Mandatory Upgrade of Messenger to Skype

Q: Mandatory Upgrade of Messenger to Skype

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium with Internet Explorer 8 and Windows Live Mail.

I got a message that I must upgrade Messenger to Skype by April 8 or they will do it automatically.

I never use Messenger, just Windows Live Mail to get my emails.

(I know I should upgrade IE 8 to 9 or 10, but IE 8 seems to work.)

Is this going to mess up my getting emails or my contacts?
Thanks, cb

Preferred Solution: Mandatory Upgrade of Messenger to Skype

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Messenger has nothing to do with email. So it doesn't affect you.

Here is part of a post I found in a Windows "user2user" newsgroup populated by some Microsoft "MVPs":
...I believe the design intent is to lock out all pre WLE 2011 QFE3 programs on Vista/Win7 until the upgrade is installed but due to problems with downloading the bits or backend server related problems, it may not be functioning as completely intended.

In any event - if ***your o/s is Win7 or Vista*** and you are using Windows Live Mail QFE2 (or Messenger, or PhotoGallery, Mesh) or earlier (including any WLE 2009 version) then it is in your best interest to upgrade.
- Imo opinion the best way to upgrade is via manually downloading the full version or web installer from MSFT and do not upgrade via the Task Bar or Program upgrade notifications.

What you should do ?
1. Back up your contacts to a csv file or vcf files (if you can't open WLM, ignore any upgrade requests, skip this step and go to step 2 below)
- imo for Vista or Win7 vcf files is preferred. Export all contacts to a blank folder and import all those VCF files into your Windows profile 'Users/Contacts folder'. WLMail doesn't use that folder but WLM easily imports contacts from that folder into WLM.
2. Download the full version installer (recommended) or web installer
- links to both full and web installers stored on the Msft server can be found on my blog Windows Live Downloads

A:Mandatory (?) WLE Upgrade

There are over 250 negative comments about the "upgrade" here: Mandatory Update to Windows Live Essentials is now available - Microsoft Answers

While there may be little we can do about any new features that may be unneeded, I believe we stand a better chance of doing a successful upgrade if we follow winston's suggestions in my previous post. Also, if you have not been signing-in, it may be advisable to save your contacts to the c:/users/<username>/Contacts folder as winston suggests so that you can reimport them into the "upgraded" WLM if necessary.

Hello sweeta, as i read your post, the solution that comes to mind is for you to confirm your settings in your Audio Manager. If you right click your Audio Manager which is usually located in the Taskbar, you should be able isolate and fix this issue . Hope i helped .

I have Windows7 (hate it). When I try to use msn messenger or skype I cannot use them. I get the icons on the tool bar at the bottom of the screen saying they are loaded. I click on the icon and can see the windows that are open, but when I click on the window, nothing opens. I know the program is running. I just can't get the windows to open.

My internet connection is usually fine, I use a D-Link 615 router, and almost always have no problem connecting and using the internet. That is of course until I decide to connect to Skype, MSN messenger, or anything but AIM. AIM for some reason works fine. Skype however cuts out frequently and the webcam connection is horrible and i know its from my end. Is there anything I can do? It's pretty frustrating not to be able to talk to my friends on Messenger since i cant even log onto that. When I try that it knocks off my entire network. What's the deal here?

A:Can't Connect to Skype/MSN messenger

Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.

The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like:

If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL
http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different!
and your IP will be disguised.

Copy/paste that link here.

Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.

Skype and Messenger are together now. It's ok.
But my Messenger contacts are on Skype AND on the app Messages
And when one of them send me a message I receive it on both Skype and Messages apps.

How can I change this ? Can I juste disable Messages app ?

PS : I'm french, sorry for the mistakes and I hope my Win8 apps are the sames as you :/

You can either disable notifications from messenger in the PC Settings, or simply uninstall the messenger app, since you have all contacts on skype.

It seems like I have the option of using Live Messenger (from the desktop), Messaging (as a Start App) or Skype (as a desktop or Start App).

But there doesn't seem to be a lot of consistency across each.

It appears to me that -

Either flavor of Skype gives me access to Microsoft and Skype accounts. But not Facebook accounts.Either flavor of Messenger gives me Microsoft and Facebook accounts. But not Skype accounts.Only Desktop Messenger gives me access to Microsoft Messenger groups. Neither flavor of Skype nor Messaging (as a Start App) do so.

Am I correct. Or are there ways to integrate Facebook accounts into Skype and Skype accounts into Messenger?

And when Microsoft Live Messenger goes away what happens to Microsoft Messenger Groups?

And while I am at it, where does Google chat fit in?

I am not sure exactly about the process you are trying to explain, but you might find answers in some multi-compatible chat client, such as Pidgin. It will connect with just about everything including Facebook chat, but sometimes I have had a hard time relaying images to Facebook chat with this client, for example. I think this client is able to share data, but it depends on the platforms being used.

I have just been trying out Skype and ooVoo.

No big deal.

However one of these programs is blocking me opening the Control Panel. I am using Vista. Everytime I try to open Control Panel, I get a dialogue box telling me that Windows Explorer has stopped working and would I like to restart or solve the problem by going online.

I know its one ot the above programs causing the problem, as I had this problem the first time I installed them. I then uninstalled them and problem gone.

I then re-installed and now have the same problem. My gut feeling is that its MSN messenger, but could be totally wrong.

Anybody come acroos this before and able to help me sort the issue.

I'm running 32 bit Vista on an Acer laptop. I'm free of viruses, etc, as far as I know. When I start up MSN Messenger, Skype, or uTorrent I will more often than not experience a disconnect from the internet a "Internet Disconnected" box pops out in the bottom right panel of my desktop. It can sometimes be fixed by simply reconnecting manually to the internet but sometimes requires a full reset of my router. I have a Linksys D-Link router and Time Warner roadrunner internet. Help a brotha out!

A:MSN Messenger, Skype, uTorrent cause Internet Stalls

We don't help with P2P/uTorrent here, so please put that aside.

What is a "full reset" of the router? A reset to factory default settings?

What kind of hybrid is a "Linksys D-Link router"? They have a joint venture going now?

Is you connection problem with ethernet, wireless or both? Any other computer used with the router? If so, are there similar problems?

Do you get the same type problem with a connection directly to the modem?

Make sure you have the latest firmware for the router; then reset it to factory default settings and reconfigure.

Hi there,

Up until yesterday my Skype, Frostwire and Windows Live Messenger have all functioned perfectly fine. I initially noticed the problem when trying to connect to messenger, which was proved impossible. When running a diagnostic I was told to check my browser's ability to connect to the internet. This is fine. I have also checked that my firewall has all of these programmes as exceptions, which it does. I attempted a basic reinstallation of Skype and Messenger. This did not change anything with Skype which still does not have the ability to reconnect and when I try to reinstall Messenger I am told this can't be done due to an 'unknown error' occuring.

Any help what so ever would be massively appreciated.

Thank you.

Skype / Messenger Live video call voice quality (fixed)

Hi All,

I am having a few problems with webcam calls with my folks.

I have installed the latest versions of Skype and Windows Live Messenger on both machines but when using either one for webcam video calls their audio and video coming to me is absolutely fine and so is my video to them however my audio to them is delayed, juddery, and robotic/gravelly (as if i have a sore throat). It is the same in both programs.

Zone Alarm on both machines is configured to allow these programs to run as they wish but still the problem persists.

We both have broadband at speeds usually no lower than 3mb.

Any help apreciated.

A:Skype / Messenger Live video call voice quality

skype is heavily dependant on bandwidth. I use it here in Iraq and with phone calls can be garbled if bandwidth is insufficient. However, it would seem in your case, the problem may be firewall related. I would ensure that all your ports are open for skype. I don't recommend zonealarm as it interferes with many programs.

A similar story to a few other posts. Very low volume outgoing using the internal Mic in a Skype call.- Brand new XPS15 9530- Immediate upgrade to Win 10- Windows update and Dell updates applied and up to date- Audio drivers show Realtek HD Audio, Skype up to date.
Skype microphone showing very low volume even with all settings to max (+30db, 100%). Calls to Test Call return nothing or very quiet voice. Control panel, Sounds, Recording shows almost no movement in the display unless you shout or tap the Mic area above the screen. Playing with all the various enhancement options both in Control panel, Sounds, Recording and Dell Audio don't seem to have any effect. However I think I've seen "Listen to this device" and Voice Recorder work fine. A possible temporary fix is to go to Control Panel, Device manager, Sound Video and Games controllers, Update Driver, Browse, Pick and choose the generic High Definition Audio Device. This is not really a long term solution but does seem to work correctly.I'm not certain yet whether the problem is Dell hardware, Windows 10, Skype or the Realtek drivers. But more or less out of the box the combination seems to be currently broken and unusable. Please investigate and find a fix. It should not be hard to duplicate the problem.

o Help!!! I'm what is known as a thicko or otherwise known as technically impaired lol. With the Msn Messenger Upgrade the other day. I can follow the upgrades normally but I have to do it manually as my Windows Updates isn't working, but msn techies are working on that one at the moment for me. My problem is with this Messenger one. I click on download as per request then it puts me with this almighty great long list of links. Now this is my problem. Which one do I load from or do I have to click on every one of them. It doesn't give any idea which is a surprise as if I do have any praise for MSN (and it's not often lol) but they usually give it in step by step, but I'm totally lost on this one. I did eventually load it up through messenger itself, and exited the old one, but now I've got to load a revised version, and its back to this long list of links. I don't know where do I go or what do I do??? I would be very grateful for any help, and it laymans step by step terms. Sorry to go on so much. I'm on XP

PS: How do I manage to be able to put up a cartoon or a photo on my profile so it will be at the side of my messages like most of you good folks I've seen up to now. I tried to do it but it said no administrator permission. How do I get that please???

I have been running MSN Messenger 6.2.0137 under Windows 98 and have now been forced to upgrade to MSN Messenger 6.2.0205 - ok so far.

However having upgraded all is ok until I reboot the PC and when it comes back up, MSN Messenger appears to revert to 6.2.0137 and again I am forced to upgrade to 6.2.0205. I have tried un-installing MSN Messenger and reinstalling 6.2.0205. Again all is ok until I reboot whereupon I seem to get 6.2.0137 back!

Any suggestions as to why this is happening and how to fix it once and for all?

Has anyone successfully got mandatory profiles working with Windows 10 (currently running Win10 Enterprise 1511).

Essentially, I have it 99% of the way there, but whilst the start bar is clickable (which it previously wasn't), it now shows a blank start menu - ignoring either the Mandatory Profile Start Menu, or the XML Start Menu imported via Group Policy.

My steps are based on having a dedicated "mandatory" local account to do all user customisations before copying it up to the netlogon share rather than using the default profile - which works fine but has none of our app customizations built in - unless I start look at importing reg keys etc;

So here are my steps;

Login to the gold image machine as .\mandatory
1. Open Regedit
2. Right Click on HKCU and give the following full permissions ? logging in as a domain admin first
a. Everyone
b. All Application Pools
c. Authenticated Users
4. Close Regedit
This is essentially instead of doing it via loading the hive - which seems to really help the start menu (I think)

5. Reboot the machine
6. Login as domain administrator ? run Windows Enabler
7. Copy the profile to \\%domaincontroller%\netlogon\profiles\johnpaul.v5 with everyone as permissions
8. Change a user to use that as their profile
9. Reboot the computer (giving AD enough time to replicate)
10. Login as that user
11. Start Menu is clickable and edge works on the task bar

I downloaded 8.1 via the store and since I started using it I really don't care for it much. Things like having to deal with watermarks on the screen, skydrive which I don't want or use, the backups having to be run via power shell etc. I would just prefer to revert back to Win 8 via restoring an image as I was happy with that however I am worried that I will not get all the necessary updates / patches from windows.

If I stick with Win 8 will I still receive all the necessay security patches? If yes how long will they support Win 8? Any info on this would be greatly appreciated! I've been searching google for answers however they seem to be pretty mixed, figured this would be the best place to ask.

when I try to open the link, the browser cannot load the page, it is stuck in a loop:  sometimes I see a page, but just for a second or even less, then mostly white page, and browser keeps trying to load the page. and in chrome : a  little shield symbol on the right side of the address bar says that it's trying to load scripts from unauthenticated sources. this message dissappears very quickly.
I have skype installed on two laptops, and on my smartphone (iphone).
The problem I told about, is on one laptop that has no antivirus. I did not yet checked the other laptop, if the microsoft page opens or not. but I do have bitdefender internet security (paid) installed on the second laptop.
I want to be sure the laptop that has the problem, is virusfree.

A:spam send in skype account to all skype contacts - cannot load page safety scan

I downloaded the safety scanner from microsoft from my other laptop without any issue.
copied it to a usb, put it on the problem laptop, a full scan and nothing found.
I realize I did had a antivirus paid version (kaspersky internet securuity) on the laptop, as I first said that it had no antivirus.
I only disabled it because it had problems running.
Now I enabled it, updated it and run a full scan. nothing found.
I don't know if skype is the cause and not a virus?  the skype workers told me that the cause could be anything (email, virus on computer).
I mostly use skype on iphone, and here I'm confused with what the skype workers said: one said that iphone can not be infected, so no need to check the iphone.
an other said: you can download an app from app store to scan for viruses, because it is possible that the virus is on the iphone.
This is really not clear anymore.

Hello Ise,

You might see if creating a new shortcut for it directly from the .exe file of Skype may work instead.

Hope this helps,

I was using an older version of msn messenger and the webcam was working fine. When I upgraded, the webcam no longer worked. We are using xp, are sharing the webcam capabilities. If one of us is in the older msn messenger and the other is in new, it still works. Why won't it work with both of us in the new version 6 of messenger?

Yahoo has released an updated version of Yahoo Messenger to fix two critical vulnerabilities affecting separate ActiveX controls related to the webcam functionality. Both vulnerabilities are buffer overflows that can be exploited to execute arbitrary code on a victim's computer just by making him/her/it view a malicious web page in Internet Explorer.Very accurate and script-kiddie-friendly exploits are publicly available for both vulnerablities. It is possible that crimeware distributors will start exploiting this for drive-by downloads. Therefore, please install the latest upgraded version of Yahoo Messenger (ver as soon as possible. Yahoo will start distributing the new version soon through an automatic update, but until that happens, you will need to install the new version manually by going to the Yahoo Messenger download page. Quoting Yahoo: *Over the next several weeks, users worldwide will be prompted to update to a new version of Yahoo! Messenger upon signing into the service. If you choose not to update and you have not updated via this page or at messenger.yahoo.com, the vulnerability will still exist.*Yahoo has a very good track record of fixing security issues quickly. However, I feel it is not proactive enough in communicating the security advisories to their users. For instance, for the current issues, there is no notice or link on the Yahoo Messenger home page or any other part of the website asking users to install the urgent security upg... Read more

A:Upgrade Your Yahoo Messenger Immediately

Thanks for the update,tomato71 I have already installed the latest version of Yahoo Messenger
But i have this feeling that if Yahoo Messenger gets more popular now a days, more security issues will pop out and would probably end up being like(McAfee or Norton)
So i'd rather switch to a low-profile IM program

Column: The Downside to Mandatory Password Changes:

Is requiring users to regularly change their passwords a good idea?
Passwords are often referred to as the weakest link in security by many cybersecurity professionals, primarily because of the human element...

Human behavior is very predictable by sophisticated hackers and when left to their own abilities, the average user will create weak passwords that are easy to break because it?s just not an intuitive process.

With this in mind, many researchers are suggesting that forcing users to regularly change their passwords, which is common in corporate settings, can actually encourage the creation of weaker passwords.

Several researchers have published studies over the years warning of the unintended consequences of regularly forced password changes and one of the more prominent figures to speak out on this common practice is the chief technologist for the Federal Trade Commission, Lorrie Cranor.

Her FTC blog post ?Time to rethink mandatory password changes? points to a university research paper that showed users tend to use predictable patterns they call ?transformations? (like just adding the next number) when regularly required to change passwords...

Okay so I've been trying to get this working for quite a while now. On Windows XP creating mandatory profiles is a lot easier! Windows 7 makes it very hard by always having duplicate files in %UserProfile%. I am using an Active Directory with Windows Server 2008 R2 for the domain controller, and Windows 7 for the clients.

So, initially I made a Profiles$ share whereby only the Administrators group had access to it. I then created a folder for every profile within the share (using Active Directory Users and Computers). That, along with Group Policy and Folder Redirection worked very nicely, except every time a user logged in it brought up an error stating "There was a problem trying to load your roaming profile".

So I then figured out that the profile folder itself was not readable by the user. I then went on to the Folder Redirection policies and revoked the exclusive access to their own folders, and then I gave 'Domain Users' full control of the entire share. I know this is quite a bad security flaw, but with Group Policy accessing Profiles$ can be totally disabled.

This did indeed remove the error message, but now there are more problems, such as me having to take ownership of each profile to be able to view the contents, and the profile creates another '.V2' folder, as well as it's original, and that the %UserProfile% folders are linked to the local profile on the C drive.

Could somebody advise me (or link me to a good tutorial) ... Read more

I have setup a new domain on a Windows Server 2008 system, and I'm using Windows 7 as the clients. I have setup working mandatory profiles, but there is 1 problem. The home directory and folder redirection is configured for the mandatory profiles, however, for the client, there is 2 of every folder type. They have 2 'My Documents', 2 'Music', 2 'Pictures', 2 'Downloads', etc, etc.

1 of each duplicate points to a local C drive folder, and the other points to the correct network share. How do I remove the folders pointing to the C drive?

we have a windows domain with a lot of users and local profiles. I don't have access to the DC, i have to ask our computing center to cooperate. Sometimes they do, sometimes not. I have local administrative rights on a number of computers.
We have a laboratory with about 8 notebooks. All the users in that lab need just a browser (FF) on that notebook and some relating configurations in the browser and the printer. My idea is to have one account for all users with the respective preconfigured
settings. I looged on with this account, made the appropriate adjustments and logged off. That i renamed in this profile folder ntuser.dat to ntuser.man, and the profile folder "d:\users\dedicated_account" to "d:\users\mandatory.v2".
Then i changed "profileimagepath" in the registry to show to the renamed folder.
Logon with the dedicated account is possible, but when i change s.th., the change is not lost after logoff, it remains.

Users have domain accounts, not local accounts.
What's wrong ?

Thanks for any help.
