Interesting USB adapter / router question.

Q: Interesting USB adapter / router question.

I connect to a hotspot with a USB dongle. I want to connect another machine, a Wii to be exact, in another room but it can't recieve the signal from the hotspot. I was wondering if there was a way to use the wireless router I have, which only has one input and that is ethernet, to somehow extend the signal to the other room? I have no way of plugging my USB adapter into the router. Can the router plug into the ethernet port on my computer and transmit what is being received via the USB dongle? Thank you guys so much.

Preferred Solution: Interesting USB adapter / router question.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Interesting USB adapter / router question.

Bridging wireless connections with a pc

Short answer yes.
I currently have a DLink router in one room, a gaming bridge in another room and a USB wireless adapter in a third room. The internet connection from my cable modem service is being bridged to the usb adapter which relays all the internet to the router. The router also communicates wirelessly with the gaming bridge passing along all that traffic.

If you can connect the WII to the router/gaming bridge(one ethernet port makes it sound more like a bridge) then connect the router to your pc using the ethernet port. Finally there should be two connections under "Start>settings>network connections" (assumes windows xp). Select the two connections (holding ctrl while clicking) then right click either and select "bridge connections". That should pass all traffic from your wireless USB adapter to the ethernet adapter.

I don't have a WII but for the XBox 360 bridging was prefered to Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) as it blindly forwards all ports and eliminates the need to specify what ports are necessary for gaming.

Good Luck

I didn't see anywhere else to post it, so I'm putting it here. We're getting a new computer and I need an adapter or other wireless connector to go with it. The router is a D-Link WBR-2310. Trying to make the most of it, so does anyone have an idea of what I should do? What other details are needed? Also, if someone has some good suggestions, I'm also considering a wired connection, since we haven't chose where to put the computer yet. Any suggestions as to connecting the computer to the the internet are what I'm looking for.

A:Question about router and an adapter to go with it

D-Link WBR-2310 is already wireless

But, your best option is to setup your Internet wired first, to make sure all is working.
Then install the wireless USB adaptor in the new computer, unplug the hard wired network cable, and re-run the wireless setup.

By clicking on Start->Run->
%SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL NetSetup.cpl,@0,WNSW
(Just copy and paste the above line into the run field)

I purchased a CradlePoint CTR35 router. My question is about a car adapter. Would you recommend purchasing the specific adapter from CradlePoint, or will any 12V adapter work, (as long as the plug is correct of course)?

A:question on 12v car adapter for wireless router

The voltage is not the only consideration. On the CradlePoint adapter will be a small schematic diagram showing whether the connector jack-plug is "centre-pin positive" or "centre-pin negative". Plug your router into a supply which is the wrong polarity for the centre-pin and you can wave goodbye to your router.

Therefore, I recommend you buy a new adapter only from CradlePoint.

Is it possible to send a fax over a cell phone? Hubby posed this question today. I can't think of a way it could be done, but promised I'd try to see if anyone here had ever heard of it being done.

A:Interesting question

A quick google search

Question: How can I send faxes with my cell phone?

Our fax software can send faxes with cell phone modems, as long as your modem can be seen from a COM Port on your computer, and your cell phone carrier supports this. You may need to call your cell phone service provider to ask if faxing is supported.

I was wondering if the following is possible or not.
I want to put a message box on certain folders. To explain, when the user opens a certain folder, windows puts up a message on the screen with a message like "This folder is out of date, please use folder 3." or something along the same lines and then open the folder when they click "OK".
I don't want to restrict access, I just want to give the user information when they enter a folder.

I have searched about a bit but I don't really know if it is possible and what to search for.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Good morning

I'm wondering. On my laptop i have a screen (duh) How can i use it to play xbox 360 or for that matter.. use it as a monitor for another PC...
What can i get that has good quality HD comp. in or VGA in. I have VGA out, but not in.....
SO can i get some PCI card to fulfill this desire? Or is this just impossible....?

A:An interesting question

The laptop screen is hard wired (digitally) to the laptop motherboard.

It's a proprietary digital interface that differs between makes and models.

It's not therefore "available" to use as an external monitor, even if you were to disassemble the laptop.

Is there a way to block someone from booting up a computer?

(I apologize if this is the wrong forum for this question.)

I have an individual who frequently spends time at my house, and I do not want her to have access to this computer. I'm sure there is a way to do it, but I don't know how. I've tried going to the CMOS screen on start up and setting a password there - It didn't work. I can't remember if there is a password command that can go into a DOS .bat file.

I have an Intel Pentium III, 500 MHz processor. The "brand" name is Pionex. I'm not sure of the motherboard type.

I would appreciate any insite on this problem. Thanks in advance.

Well MS fixed "Error 80248015" ,  Thinking about it this AM how did they access our machines to apply the fix????????????????????

A:Interesting Question

They didn't, the problem was created by an outdated file located on the Microsoft Update servers.
When the Windows Update Client on your computer tries to update, first it check if there is a new version of the client on the server and during that check it downloads a file that didn't pass the validation check because of the expired date.

one of the mucky-mucks got a new laptop today, imaged it, installed his custom apps, copied over his profile, installed all necessary software for his various apps, and the only problem I am having is that he wants his custom dictionary imported. Now, I know that with word it's normal.dot; I know this as I tend to have most of my office suite products pretty customized and back up the toolbars rather frequently, as I don't feel like re-adding a few thousand entries into the custom dictionary.

My question, however, is is there a place where office stores ALL of the custom dictionary stuff, as when he opens outlook all his custom entries are popping up in spell checker, and he understandably doesn't want to rebuild that.

I had thought that by bringing over his profile it would solve that issue, or rather had assumed it, as nobody has ever voiced that question before in 5 years of doing this.

So is there a central repository that office dumps stuff in outside the profile that I need to bring up to his new machine?

I'm incredibly interested how the creators of these files were able to get their results and mostly I want to make my own "cursed files". Some of the properties I've seen are video lengths upwards of 13,000 hours long, yet still being 1 MB. I've also seen videos that have negative video lengths and videos that display the video length as 0, yet still plays a video.

First of all.. i was wondering if using a program like Remote Assitance or something like that where you can access everything on someone elses computer you could print on the computer thats not hooked up to the printer.

Second, is there anyway to send prints across the internet? i don't know if that makes sense so just ask for clarity if needed

this is going to sound bizarre, but i need the info...i have been sending my husband nude photos to his mediacom email account. i asked him for his password and he freaked out and said i couldn't have it. it seems silly, but why would he say no? anyway, i don't want his password at all, i'm just wondering if someone can verify something for me...my husband claims that he cannot give me his password because i won't be able to see any emails, as all his emails sent to the mediacom address are forwarded in 15 seconds to outlook express on his work computer. he claims that i cannot have his password because the mediacom email is for work, and others in his store have access to the address log in, but he says they cannot see my photos because they are going to outlook. how does this work? sounds odd to me. basically, even though on my home computer i can go to the mediacom website and technically log in to his account if he gave me his password...but i wouldn't see any emails?
this is what hubby says...and is outlook truly this amazing

mediacom doesn't delete the messages, outlook express takes them from mediacom, and delivers them to my inbox....It is amazing when you think about it.

A:question about outlook and mediacom mail communication...interesting story at least

If he has Outlook Express set to check for new mail every 15 seconds and to delete downloaded messages from the (Mediacom) server immediately then what he says is true. I've never used OE, but I doubt that you can set it to check for mail more frequently than every minute.

hi, i have a Belkin F6D4050 adapter

Compliant Standard: IEEE 802.11b/802.11g (WiFi Certified)
Hardware Interface Type: USB 2.0
Humidity: Operating: 10 ~ 85%, Storing: 5 ~ 90% non-condensing
LEDs: Power/Activity
Link Rate: 150 Mbps (In 40Mhz Mode)
Radio Frequency Band: ISM Band: 2400-2483.5 MHz (2.4 GHz)
Radio Frequency Band1 :Europe: 1-13
Security : WEP (64-128bit), WPA-PSK (TKIP), WPA2-PSK (AES) with WPS Push Button
Supporting Software: Windows 2000, XP or Vista

Link rate is stated as 150 but I have my router set to 300. When I lower it on the router to 150 the transfer rate drops as it would but I tried with the router set to 300 and it increased a lot, again as it would. question I have is with my router set to 300 and my adapter 150, although all is working ok at the minute will I be confronted by any problems? By the way the router I'm using at the moment doesn't have a 20/40Mhz mode, I think its auto with no options/tabs for that setting.

Hi guys, that is the question if you have a N router and connect a G device your speed drops down to G but which are the numbers in mbs?

A:N Router with G adapter how much you would lose?

Unless you have fiber optic internet you shouldn't really notice a difference in normal use.
Internal network is more affected though.
There you may actually notice a difference.
As it stands most average web interaction is limited by hubs and site servers, generally they won't pass 5 MBps regardless of whether your connection can handle more or not.
With the internal network, you are dealing with 54mbps vs 300mbps.
Now I never finished college but I'm pretty sure that 300 is bigger than 54.
Though honestly most wireless n I've used is limited to about half of that either because of signal strength or some internal issue of some sort.

anyhow, I guess what I'm saying is what is lost is situational. It could be nothing it could be a noticeable difference, it mostly depends on the connection to the net/network and what you are doing at the time.

I have an external USB HDD plugged into PC 1; I have Router. So PC 2 can see the external HDD, while PC 1 is off, I was wondering if I got a USB-RJ45 adapter and plugged the HDD into my router, would it show as a network drive?

I'm guessing it will not since there's nothing in the external HDD to maintain an IP or MAC address, but wanted to throw the idea out there.

I know about NAS, but an adapter is much cheaper.

A:External USB HDD into Router via Adapter?

As you already said, an adapter cannot do this. There are NAS devices out there that don't have internal hard drives at all and only share USB (and printers). Or, get a NAS box that comes without hard drives and supports USB.

A USB switch would work too - you can switch the USB device between two computers. Just take care not to switch over without "safely removing" the disk.

Here's the setup:-
I have a computer situated upstairs in a bedroom that has a Router attached (no broadband connected) which is then connected to a Linn Digital Streamer, Linn Pre-Amplifer and a networked attached storage device, so that they can all talk together...
All was working fine, until i installed broadband downstairs, and i am now using a USB wireless adapter plugged into the computer upstairs to access the internet etc...
It seems now i can only use the USB wireless adapter OR the router connections, by disabling the other connection.
So how do i get the both working together??

Also when it all works, will the router and the 3 items be able to access the internet through the USB adapter??
If not / or is there an easier solution? Someway to plug broadband (wirelessly) into the back of the router maybe??

Thanks for any help...

Like so many others before me, I have an issue and want help... And I’d be very grateful to anyone who can help...

So... yesterday, I believe, I was browsing around the internet... and I got the typical "This page cannot be displayed" error when I attempted to go to one of my heavily frequented websites. I refreshed a few times, as I thought the error popped up a bit quickly (and everyone knows that IE will, on occasion, toss that error at you for no good reason -_-)... but to no avail...

I shrugged, and went off to another of my regular websites. Same error. Now this struck me as odd. I refreshed a few times... both of these websites are LARGE websites... and generally are not down... one of them can be slow and sluggish on occasion, but very rarely down... Perhaps there was something wrong with my net connection? A few other clicks around the internet revealed that some websites would still load normally as though there was nothing wrong... So maybe just those websites, then?

I sent links to a few friends of mine over Yahoo!... all three of them said that the two webpages that would not load at all loaded fine for them... ...Even odder.

After a bit more experimentation, I discovered:

Some websites Will Not Show Up. At all. I get 'This page cannot be displayed" errors until the cows come home.

Some websites will display fine.

So I upgraded my driver and it still didn't work. I thought maybe it was the router so I got my old laptop out and connected to my new router and it works fine. So right now I'm kinda confused since it's not necessarily my router since my old compy can connect or my wireless card since i can connect to other routers.

Your Wi-Fi adapter doesn't seem to be compatible with your router. Have you tried changing the wireless security - WPA or WPA2?
From your computer can you please post a Xirrus snip. Download, install and run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector.

To run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector, double click the Xirrus icon on your Desktop, you may use the Windows 7 snipping tool to crop or Paint by tapping the Print screen key on your keyboard, open up Paint (Click on Start>All Programs>Accessories>Paint) then choose Edit from the Menu and select Paste, then save it and please attach the file on your next post.

Can you also post ipconfig/all output for review?

Hi -

First post for me - but what a helpful site!

I have a Linksys WRT54GX, ver. 2, wireless G router to which I have lost the ac power adapter. The manual lists it as a 12 volt DC 1 amp (12VDC 1 A).

I have been to Radio Shack, Best Buy, and numerous electronic outlets, as well as exhaustive searches on the net, as well as contacting Linksys directly (they will not sell one separate! Imagine that for tech support!).

You guessed it - I cannot find one. I even went to my pack rat brother who probably has beat Noah and has collected at least one, if not two of everything on Earth - just in case, as he says!

Anyone have any idea where I can get one of these things?

The ones I have found are 12VDC but .5a, 1.something amps, but none are 1 amp.

Anything anyone can chime in on would be appreciated.

(No there is no USB connection on the router to draw power from the CPU, either! Darn!)

I just signed up today as I'm having a networking problem and I can't figure out how to fix it.

The main internet connection to the internet is through my main computer running XP (all my pc's are XP). I have a Linksy's router connected here. I have a computer in my sons room, a computer in my dining room, and my laptop, and they all connect through the wireless network. Everything was fine untill we got another computer (hand me down). I thought this other computer may be faster, and it is more up to date, so I unhooked my computer in the dining room, and hooked up the 'new' computer. I had to buy a new wireless adapter (USB for this one and my laptop. The other two have the wireless thing inside) so I could connect it to the network. It worked just fine. It found the network, and I was able to connect to the internet. Well, since then, the pc in my sons room, and my laptop, won't connect to the internet. They could find a network connection, but I'm thinking it was finding the new adapter I connected because instead of saying 'found- Linksy's', it said linksy's and some numbers next to it.
Anyway, after realizing the the 'new' computer was actually slower than the one we already had in the dining room, and since the other two computers couldn't get online anymore, I decided to just put the one that was in the dining room, back, and just not use the new pc. Now, I have THREE computers that w... Read more

A:My wireless adapter won't connect to my router

If your network is secured connect one of the computer to the router via ethernet and disable encryption. Try to connect wirelessly that way. If successful you can probably then re-enable encryption and reconnect.

If you can't even communicate with the router via ethernet reset the router to factory default settings and start over.

Note that if it is problem to move a computer to the router you can always temporarily move the router to the computer for configuring it.

last week you helped me by telling me i could have 2 pcs share 1 dsl account by using a router. so i bought a wireless linksys and adapter to use on my 2 desk tops in different parts of the house. it seems to hook up fine, (both on windows xp) but the pc with the adapter totally shuts down to re-start as soon as you hit the web. linksys support guy said get a new adapter or get another computer to test it on. i chose to trade in the adpater, but the new one does the same thing. i have no other computer to try it on, so???any advice?

I have a Netgear wgr614v6 router connected to my main computer, and a Roswill pci wireless adapter rnx g300e installed in my backup computer. When I had WinXp installed on both, I was able to connect my backup computer wirelessly to the router. I upgraded my main computer to Windows 7 Professiional, and Windows Home Premium on my backup computer. I recently decided to set the backup computer up permanently and tried to connect to the router. The wireless card shows up in device manager and is installed correctly. When I try to connect, the card can see the name of my main computer, but cannot access the internet. I made the router open, ie no security to see if anything changed, but it didn't. I'm not sure if I have to create a home network first or not, but since the backup computer cannot connect to the internet it won't have an ip address. I use Norton Internet Security 2010. Can anyone offer a solution? Thanks in advance.

A:Wireless adapter cannot connect to my router

First, uninstall (don't disable) Norton Security and then reboot. It's hard to troubleshoot a driver or hardware problem when there is a third party firewall application installed. After that's done, try to connect to your router again. It that still doesn't work, check for drivers from the manufacturer. Sometimes Windows installs what it thinks is the correct driver, but turns out it isn't the one you need.

Im becoming infinitely frustrated over this problem. Your help is immensely appreciated.

I have a linksys wireless adapter in my dell desktop. I have had no problems with this in the past 3-4 years. Over the last few days I had reformatted my computer and re-installed xp onto it. I then went to dell.com and downloaded the drivers for my specific computer. I burned those to a cd and installed them onto my desktop. Now I cannot connect to my router at all. I can see the connection and the signal it is giving, but it wont allow me to connect.

I am not all that good with computers and fixing them is not fun for me. Initially I went to linksys.com to see if they could help me on their online chat support. They could not because after some minutes of generic questions they said that I had owned their product too long to recieve online support, they gave me a phone number to call their tech support.

Instead I called verizon to try and have them help me. I have verizon service and a verizon router. After 20 minutes of BS with them they said they could not help me and that it was most likely a problem with the linksys adapter and that I need to call linksys.

So they gave me the phone number for linksys and after 20 minutes of BS with them, they say that my adapter is out of warrenty and they cannot help me. I had 3 options with them. 1- go online to linksys.com, 2- spend 34.99 for a one time charge for tech support and continue talking to this guy, 3- spend MORE money for ... Read more

Hello all, I am desperate for a solution. I purchased a new Abbra 2 alarm system with an Linkys ABN adapter. I have a Belkin Pre N router which works perfectly until I plug in the adapter. I have 4 wireless laptops that connect to the router.

All the PC's connect and work fine until I plug in the ABN adapter. THe ABN adapter gets it's DHCP address and for about 60 seconds all our connected. THen the wireless computers drop the connection. I have tried to talk to Belkin, Next Alarm and have not been able to find a solution. Any suggestions.. Thanks

A:Problems with ABN adapter and Belkin Pre N Router

I can't imagine the ABN adapter doing this, it's just another Ethernet device.

Just on a lark, can you take that adapter to a friends network and see if just plugging it in creates the same issue on a different network?

I hate to be posting about this, but I am out of ideas. My existing Netgear WNDA3100V2 which I have been using it for maybe 6 months without problems suddenly refused to connect to the router, so after trying to update the firmare and still not working, I went and bought a new one Netgear WNDA3100V3 and it's still isn't working. The router seems to be working just fine because my phone can still connect to it and I am using the ethernet connection coming out of it linking it to my computer so I can use the internet. Can anyone tell me what they think might be going on since I am out of ideas? Thanks for the help in advance.
