Preferred Solution: Cannot Startup Windows - No Bitlocker Recovery Key

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi
After rebooting one of our test machines, bitlocker wanted the recovery key.
There were no hardware modifications on that machine.
Error message in event log:
Bootmgr failed to obtain the bitlocker volume master key from the TPM because the PCRs did not match
Event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver
Each time the machine starts, the recovery key is needed.
Any idea how to solve that issue and why it happens?
update:
Second partition was created manually on that machine. So that's clear that bitlocker reacts...
But now: how can I confirm those changes so that the recovery key is not needed each time we boot?

A:Bitlocker enabled drive, recovery key needed during boot, PCS did not match, event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver

Hi,

I would like to confirm if BitLocker accepts the recovery key?

Please update the BIOS to improve the stability for TPM first.

I also would like to suggest you disable and enable BitLocker again to reset the settings.

Hello and good afternoon, I have a issue where a manager started the Bitlocker process on the SD card in his Surface Pro 3

with Windows 8.1. The Bitlocker attempt failed at 3.4% completed but the SD card ended up being Bitlocked without providing the Bitlocker Recovery Key (I've never seen this happen before). He doesn't know the password for the SD card and of course
I've been tasked to somehow release the encryption so that he can get the required information off of the SD card.

Is there anything that can be done to release the encryption on the SD card or has the SD card been made non-accessible moving forward?

A:Lost my windows bitlocker drive encryption recovery key

Hello @Destro78 Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting. BitLocker keys (for personal devices) are stored inside or in many case they are back-up to Microsoft cloud with your Microsoft account. Since this is a tablet, I suspect that I suspect your recovery key is available in Microsoft's OneDrive spaceHere are instructions how you can recover the key as well as how to get back to business.>> http://windowsitpro.com/microsoft-surface/locating-your-microsoft-surface-bitlocker-recovery-key>> http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/21433-bitlocker-recovery-unlock-drive-windows-8-a.html  >> http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=237614https://onedrive.live.com/recoverykey Login to the MS account there and check.Use the key to login to your PC.Eventually, if you prefer you can disable BitLocker and turn off device encryption, or save/print the key offlinePlease, note that it is very important for security reasons that you keep the encryption key (Bitlocker key) in a secure place so that only you know it.  More info - re. I tried enabling BitLocker on my C: drive, and before I got to any BitLocker setup, a window appeared that said Windows Recovery Environment was being moved, and "You will no longer be able to use Windows Recovery Environment unless it is manually enabled and moved to the system drive." It was the warning from Scenario 1 Step 5 of this article: Scenario 1: Turning On BitLocker Drive Encryption on an Operating System Drive (Windows 7) I ended up not encrypting my drive with BitLocker, and found that my system partition is 199 MB. So, how do I "manually enable" Windows Recovery Environment and "move it to the system drive"?

A couple of weeks ago I posed a question HERE regarding how to tell whether Windows 10 Mobile device storage was actually encrypted and if so where were the recovery keys stored. The good news, is that the device storage is indeed encrypted when turning 'Device Encryption' on. The bad news is that I still don't know where the recovery keys are stored and it can permanently lock you out of your device.

Earlier I reset a Lumia 630 running Windows 10 Mobile 10586.36 (Settings > System > About > Reset Phone) and when it restarted I was faced with a blue Bitlocker Recovery Key screen. The problem being, that it's a Desktop Bitlocker Recovery screen and as this is a mobile device it's completely useless as you can't do anything with it, it just locks you out of the device. Hard-resetting the phone (Volume Down and Power buttons) doesn't work either, it just reboots the device to the Bitlocker screen again.

All is not lost though, as it's possible to Flash the phone back to the original OS by running the 'Windows Device Recovery Tool'. When connecting the phone to the PC and running the Device Recovery Tool, the tool doesn't recognise the device though with it in it's Bitlocker Recovery state and just shows the Firmware and OS as 'Unknown'. So you then need to click on the 'My Device Was Not Detected' button and follow the on-screen prompts. After a few restarts, it will then flash the phone back to the original Windows 8 OS. Bit of a pain, but at least not to... Read more

I'm trying to help my daughter who is away at college with her XPS 13 laptop purchased June 2017.  It's running Windows 10 Home.  She took it out and opened it up after class and a blue screen with BitLocker looking for the recovery key was present.  From what I've read, bitlocker isn't available on the home version, only pro and enterprise.  She can't enter the recovery key since it was never turned on, even if it was available.  I told her it will probably need to be reformatted since it's looking for something that is not available.
Has anyone seen this before? Any recommendations?  She's taking it in to the tech center later today.
I forgot to add that when she goes to her Microsoft account and looks at her devices is shows Windows 10 home AND BitLocker ON, although it was never activated.  The "Get BitLocker recovery keys" link brings her to her Onedrive account.  She says she doesn't see the recovery key anywhere on her OneDrive account.
Thanks,

George

I know a BIOS update on my Latitude with Windows 8 and Bitlocker activated on the O/S drive triggers Bit locker recovery on startup. I don't have the recovery key and so am stuck. How to recover without the Bit Locker recovery key?

A:BIOS update without suspending Bitlocker has triggered a recovery and on start up I am prompted for the recovery key

The solution I found was to install the previous version of the BIOS, but without being able to boot into Windows, I needed to install the previous version of the BIOS in DOS. Some server products provide a F12 boot up menu option to roll back a BIOS update, but this is not available in my Latitude.

I downloaded the correct BIOS version (the additional info section made specific reference to it being installable from Windows or DOS). I prepared a bootable USB key (to a dos prompt) and copied the bios installer executable to the memory stick.

Because secure boot (UEFI) is enabled, it is not possible to boot up from USB key, so legacy boot mode needs to be enabled. There were 3 settings that required changing in the BIOS before I was able to boot from the USB key.

Once I was able to boot into DOS from the USB key and got to the DOS prompt, I ran the BIOS update exe. The laptop rebooted, installed the previous BIOS version and then rebooted again. I pressed F2 to get into the BIOS and changed back the settings as they were (secure boot UEFI). I then managed to boot into windows without being prompted for the Bit locker recovery key.

You able to export or view the Bitlocker recovery key by going to Control Panel -> Security -> Bit locker Management, and temporarily suspend protection (until the next reboot). It is possible to run a commandlet to specify the number of reboots bit locker should be suspended for.

You may find that installing the previous version of the ... Read more

1. Will disabling Startup Repair bring any impact to computers with BitLocker installed?

2. Does Startup Repair cause computer to disjoin the domain?
3. Is there a way to disable Startup Repair using SCCM? or is it better to do it via GPO?

We want to Disable Startup Repairs on all Windows 7 computers with BitLocker Enabled. Because we have thousands of computers out there, we would like to avoid BitLocker from asking for Recovery Password upon restart & detecting there are changes made on the BIOS.
Disable Startup Repair will be pushed via a gpo startup script.

We tried manage-bde -off C: -- however, it does not fit the purpose as it took times to decrypt C: and when we turned BitLocker back on manage-bde -On C:, BitLocker is asking for Recovery Password key.

Is there a way to achieve for BitLocker machine not asking for Recovery Password when detect a change on BIOS? and can that be achieve via GPO/SCCM?

Title in the subject line pretty much says it.I've got a Dell Precision 5510 and a TB16 dock.It is currently running Windows 10 1703 but this issue existed under Windows 10 1607 as well.
Sequence of events/how to replicate:

Connect the Precision 5510 to the TB16 dock (presence of any other combination of peripherals seems to be irrelevant)
Boot into Windows 10 and enable BitLocker using TPM and a PIN
Shutdown and power on or /restart, whilst still connected to the TB16, enter your PIN and boot successfully
Shutdown and disconnect from the TB16 dock then try to boot - BitLocker prompts for the great big recovery key (what a pain)
Entering the recovery key and proceeding to boot is fine, as is shutting down and trying to boot again with the TB16 attached but if you're away from the office (and the TB16) and don't have the recovery key, then you're in a bit of a pickle!
If you've...

Booted with the TB16 attached
Shutdown and disconnected from the TB16
Booted to encounter BitLocker recovery (but luckily had the recovery key with you and entered it)
Continued to use the Precision 5510 away from the TB16 and restarted...then you have no need to encounter BitLocker recovery and re-enter the recovery key again

One you go back to connecting to the TB16 though... you guessed it, you need to re-enter the recovery key again.
I see two ways to look at this:

What's going on at a hardware level that is resulting in this behaviour? Is there something at a dock c... Read more

My laptop hasn't been in use for about a few weeks and all of a sudden, I am getting a Windows Error Recovery on Startup. I am given two options: Launch Startup Repair (recommended) and Start Windows Normally. Nothing happens when I try to restart Windows normally -- I only see a black screen. Upon selecting System Recovery, a teal screen pops up with "System Recovery Options" telling me to select a keyboard layout. Then it tells me to select my OS, but it comes up blank, telling me to load drivers for my hard disks. I stopped right there.

I am a little hesitant about using the System Recovery in fear of losing important files. If this is a possibility, I may try to backup my files using an alternate OS, like Ubuntu. Or are my files already long gone? Is this just a restore for important Windows files or a complete restore of Windows back to factory settings?

I have not installed any new software or devices. Running Windows Vista x64.

In Computer > Properties > System Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery,
the option "time to display recovery options when needed".
Can we use this option to disable Windows Startup repair so that Windows 7 will startup Windows normally at all time?
This option is currently no selected, however the Windows is starting up with the Startup Repair screen when it went into bluescreen etc.

If we select this option and change to 0 seconds (without
running bcdecit /set {default| recoveryenabled to No), will Windows start up normally without going to Repair option?

Noticed that even on machine that has recoveryenabled set to No. bcdebit /set {default} recoveryenabled No --- the "time to display recovery options when needed still remains uncheck.
are these two: recoveryenable No vs time to dipsplay recovery options option related/same?

Hello @pcsl, Welcome back to the HP Support forum. Thank you for your post. BitLocker is a Microsoft software designed to protect your PC against offline attacks, unauthorized access typically if your PC gets stolen. BitLocker is full disk encryption software. More info:>> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitLocker>> http://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-bitlocker-encryption-windows-10 BitLocker was activated by someone and during the activation time it prompts the user to save/store the key in a safe place. If this is company owned asset/PC, you should turn to your company's IT support guys and they should be able to provide you with the recovery key. If this is your own device, most probably you use a slightly different BitLocker version for certain PCs and tablets known as Device encryption. Probably your key is stored in Microsoft OneDrive with your Microsoft account here :>> https://onedrive.live.com/recoverykey More info>> https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/12/microsoft-may-have-your-encryption-key-heres-...>> http://windowsitpro.com/microsoft-surface/locating-your-microsoft-surface-bitlocker-recovery-key>> http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/21433-bitlocker-recovery-unlock-drive-windows-8-a.html Please, note that it is very important for security reasons that you keep the encryption key (Bitlocker key) in a secure place so that only you know it. Let me know if this works for you ... Hi,

I have a new Windows 8.1 machine and I wish to encrypt the drive using Bitlocker. It gives me 4 options to save a recovery key
1. Save to your Microsoft account
2. Save to a USB flash drive
3. Save to a file
4. Print the recovery key

Option 1 isn't available as I'm logged on using a local account.
i. What is the difference between options 2 & 3? i.e. I could save to a file on a USB drive
ii. Does option 2 mean the USB flash drive cannot then be used for other purposes?
iii. Does option 2 also mean I could use a USB external hard drive, or does it have to be a flash drive?
iv. Once the recovery key has been created, can the key then be copied to other locations or is it only going to work where Bitlocker puts the key?
v. Just thinking about printing the recovery key - can this be used without a password to access the drive, how sensitive/important is the printed key?

N00b questions, I'd very much appreciate your answers.

Thanks

A:Bitlocker recovery key

hello and welcome to eight forms , my opinion , difference between 2 and 3 ,2 will create a file and put it on the flash drive for yah,3 you will have to move the file it creates to a flash drive of external drive manually 'I would think you could take the file it create and put it where ever you want , I don't use bitlocker ,if I did I would print it and put away for safe keeping ,like I try to do will all passwords .and if the drive is pass worded that you store the file on ,then yes someone would need the drive password to access the files on that drive, is not that what passwords are for ,I would assume that there are people who could hack your passwords like they do others ,good luck

Surface Pro3 came on again. My only problem now is that whenever I shut down the system, it refuses to turn on, except I re-enter the 40-digit Recovery number before I have access to my files and documents. I find that as a serious inconvenience
to me. Kindly advise me on how the system will operate normally so that I don't have to re-enter a long string of 40-digit number before I have access to my Surface Pro 3 please.
Best regards
