Avast Free anti-virus : unwanted anti-spam toolbar in Outlook 2003

Q: Avast Free anti-virus : unwanted anti-spam toolbar in Outlook 2003

Hi,

I have had Avast Free anti-virus for a long time. At some point, after an automatic upgrade, all my messages in Outlook 2003 got an added anti-spam toolbar from Avast. I don't want it.

I did not find any way to make it go away from inside Outlook. It does not appear as an add-on in the relevant places. At some point, there was a register-based solution that was floating around on the Web. It worked with a previous version of Avast, but not with the current one.

I uninstalled Avast (with the proprietary uninstall tool, in safe mode) and reinstalled it twice. At some point, the anti-spam appeared as a separate module, so naturally I refused installation / deactivated it / uninstalled it (don't remember which). Yet it's impossible to make the toolbar go away.

If I de-activate or uninstall the mail shield module, the anti-spam toolbar goes away, but I don't want that. I want Avast to scan my mail, of course.

Now that I have nixed it somehow, the anti-spam component does not show anymore in the Settings / Components panel, not even in order to be re-activated. I don't know if this is a bug or a feature. It happens with other Avast components that I have refused, or uninstalled, and which do not appear anymore in the options panel as an option available for re-activation.

The anti-spam, illogically, is not part of the mail shield component, and no relevant settings appear in the mail shield settings.

A request in the Avast forum did not bring any helpful answers.

Thanks for any insights in this before I nuke Avast altogether (for what ? not many free choices worth their salt...).

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have no way to manage my spam folder and approve or deny senders since the anti spam tool bar disappeared on my outlook 2003. On CNET I found this suggestion (copied below), however, when I got to the step of the symantec folder I discovered I didn't have one.

Any other ideas?
In Microsoft Outlook go to:
Tools > Options > Other > Advanced Options > COM Add-ins
Do an ADD...
find the file NASPlug.dll in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Antispam\
Select it and say 'OK'.

This should trigger Norton Internet Security to re-add the Norton Toolbar and folder.

Avast and SecureAPlus have been fairly interesting for me. Both seem to have great scanning and protection. Which would you choose?
NOTE: I have heard that SecureAPlus may have a really slow scan in the beginning. If that something you don't like that fine, Avast has a slow scan as well so I am not counting against either one.

Is anyone using the Free Avast AV? If so, could you answer a few questions I have?

I notice two places to download the Free Avast from.

#1- I went to http://www.avast.com and that takes me to a CNET download page. The file is named "avast_free_antivirus_setup" and is about 90MB. Is that the one I should download even though it is from CNET and not directly from Avast? It doesn say ".exe" at the end!

HOWEVER there is another download at http://www.avast.com/en-us/support (under 'download this software") that has a "Avast_free_antivirus_online.setup.exe" that is only 4.6 MB. (under 'Download software)
WHICH ONE IS CORRECT as they both differ in size?

#2- I understand that when I am installing I will be requested to 'register.' Is that correct? And if I do not register, I will be only allowed to use the Avast for 30 days.
If I do register will I be able to use the Avast forever?

#3- Can I install on more than one of my computers? If so, will I be asked to register for each one? And if so would I input the same information in each one that I put in when I registered the first one?
Thanks for any help.

File System Shield checks any programs at the moment they are started and other files at the moment they are opened or closed. If anything suspicious is detected, the file system shield will prevent the program from being started or the file from being opened to prevent any damage being caused to your computer and data. A suspicious detection does not mean the file is actually malicious so avast allows you to add the file to the exclusion list and report it as a false positive so the detection will be removed. This detections has been reported previously (and not exclusively by avast) but may need to be reported to avast again.Steam.exe being detected as a TrojanSteam.exe was just flagged as a trojanSteam.exe False PositiveThe detection has also been reported at the Steam Community forums.avast blocking csgo.exe and steam.exe thinking its a 'dropperSteam.exe Virus?

I am running the latest versions of Avast Free Antivirus and Google Chrome. I turn off behaviour shield and Chrome runs fine. I turn it back on and the Chrome window appears and just hangs permanently without loading. I tried making Chrome a 'trusted process' in 'expert settings', but that didn't help at all. I also tried removing all extensions from Chrome to no avail. I installed Avast after Chrome and Chrome seemed to work prefectly fine for a few weeks, so I have no idea why the problem started. I have read about a few conflicts with Chrome and various antivirus products since recently reseraching this, but have have found no solution that works for me yet. I am running Windows XP MCE 2002 SP3 32 bit. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Here are the errors I get after trying both:
1. An error occurred while applying security information to: C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast
Access is denied
Contine Cancel

2. If you have just taken ownerhsip of this object, you will need to close and reopend this object's properties before you can view or change permissions.
OK

NOT OK!!

I've already "deleted" the program, using Revo Uninstaller....but the folder still exists....and a constant reminder "YOU'RE AT RISK......YOUR AVAST ANTI-VIRUS HAS EXPIRED" is a non-stop annoyance.

Has anyone had this problem? Got the easy solution?

No you shouldn't run two AVs at the same time, it's asking for trouble. I'm surprised Defender didn't turn off automatically when Avast was installed. But yes, uninstall one. Just make sure it's Avast you uninstall and keep Defender, Avast is well known for causing BSODs whereas Defender doesn't.

There is no universal "one size fits all" solution that works for everyone and there is no single best anti-virus. Every vendor's virus lab and program scanning engine is different. Each has has its own strengths and weaknesses and they often use a mix of technologies to detect and remove malware. In many cases choosing an anti-virus is a matter of personal preference and what works best on a particular system. You may need to experiment and find the one most suitable for your needs. No need for ineffectual third-party Anti-Spam software. The third-party software vendors won't tell you that Outlook Express already blocks spam as good as their software does. I never get Spam in my OE Inbox. This setup may apply to other e-mail clients as well.

Several scenarios:

If you have one (1) e-mail account through your ISP. I have 5, and only 1 account gets spam so I just put the other 4 account's e-mail address, in the following filter, and virtually all Spam is dumped in the folder of my choice. You simply need to create a 'white list'. Outlook Express gives you all the tools necessary to block Spam this way. You simply set up a Message Rule:

With Outlook Express open click the Tools menu; Message Rules; Mail; Click the New button; Under the number (1) 'Conditions' window, tick the box next to, 'Where the To or CC line contains people'; In the number (2) Actions window, tick the box next to, 'Move it to the specfied folder'; In box number (3) 'Rules description' click on the blue 'contains people' entry; Enter your first Approved Sender for example, [email protected] and click the Add button; In the lower right New Mail Rule box now click the Options button; choose the option, 'Message does not contain the following people'; Click the OK button; Click the next OK button; Click the blue 'specified folder entry and then use the wizard to choose the folder you want to send un... A:RE: Free Anti-Spam Software

Different strokes for different situations.
The thing I like about my ineffectual third party anti-spam software is that it allows me to check and see what e-mail is on the server for all of my five e-mail accounts at once. And if the mail is spam, which in most cases it is, then all spam can be deleted from the server for all of the e-mail accounts at once. No having to sign in to each account in Outlook Express individually just to see what is there.
If it weren't for the above then yes I could just set up a friends list (White list) in OE and have a separate folder for e-mail not filtered through the friends list and I would probably be content with that set up.

Hi everyone, I right now have Avast free antivirus downloaded onto my computer alongside malwarebytes anti malware free and emsisoft emergency kit. I would like to add more on demand scanners to my system and hence i tried downloading emsisoft anti malware but it seems that the software has issues with Avast being on my system. I am trying to make choice on whether i leave configuration as it is or delete either avast and download emsisoft or not download emsisoft in the first place. Everyone's input is much appreciated!

A:Emsisoft Anti Malware vs. Avast Free Antivirus

Emsisoft AntiMalware and Avast are full antiviruses, so running both at the same time is not recommended, as it may cause conflicts. You have to choose one of them. You probably can leave Avast as your main AV and use Emsisoft Emergency Kit as an on demand scanner. Other options for on demand scanner: Zemana Antimalware Free, Norton Power Eraser, Hitman Pro (paid). Choose those which best suits you. I wouldn't recommend Malwarebytes anymore, as its quality has degraded significantly since version 3 was released.

Do you mean client side or server side? I use Spamassassin server side and it works very well.

I downloaded avg internet security 9.0 on my xp desktop after using it in the trial period without problem (spam toolbar visible). 2 days later while using outlook my computer froze up, I rebooted, opened outlook and was told a critical error had occured and that it would disable avg but that I could reset it somehow (didn't read that part). I've uninstalled and reinstalled avg, been through the mill with avg techsupport and still no spam toolbar to be seen. Avg tech mentioned something about a COM addin that I should find, but there was nothing there. I think that this is where the problem may lie. Please help.

I believe I am infected with some sort of virus. I have tried to run my anti-virus program. It appears to begin to open, and then it is suppressed and will not open. I also cannot open the ebay toolbar as well as the google toolbar adter downloading. Here are the three Hijack this logs for myself and my two sons( we are set up as three users). Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hello,

I use sometimes outlook to retrieve my emails but all spam email are also fetched, even after I mark them as Junk email in outlook.
So I am wondering why the filter antispam in outlook (junk mail blocker) is not efficient?

Thank you

A:Why outlook anti-spam is inefficient?

It would rather give you junk than block something important. Depending on your account, ie: Gmail/yahoo the spam filters tend to change quite a bit. For an all inclusive spam filter to email, you're going to spend some bucks.

Hi,
I have noticed that over the past couple of days....anytime i try to get anti spam to either identify received email as either spam...or not spam....it ends up freezing. This happens in both Outlook and Outlook Express. This may have corresponded with my subscribtion renewal. Any ideas?

O/S XP Outlook 2002. Have tried to download 2 different anti spam programs. One is SpamCatcher and the other is Spam Inspector. Once these programs are running I cannot paste anything onto the Subject line of an e-mail message. I use Outlook for my e-mails. I file most of my e-mails by Subject so I have to be able to copy and paste on occassion. When I uninstall the program the problem is resolved. Any ideas. Tks

Hi,

I have tried numerous times to get Kaspersky Anti Spam to load as an add-in to Microsoft Outlook 2013. I am using the following version of Kaspersky:

If I go into the add-in menu on Outlook the Anti Spam add-in is disabled:

So I re-enable the add-in:

and the add-in appears in the Toolbar/Ribbon:

Then when I close and restart Outlook 2013 again it disappears making it unusable:

I have removed (using the removal tool) and reinstalled Kaspersky and I have repaired Microsoft Office which is effectively a reload of the Office suite but the problem still exists

Would be grateful of some assistance...

It needs to be set to load at start-up but there does not seem to be a way to make this happen?

Thanks
M
