ibm thinkpad all sorts of f_d up

Q: ibm thinkpad all sorts of f_d up

I have an IBM thinkpad t21 which had linspire loaded on the hard drive and it had been deleated but not properly. when the computer is started it just sits at the linspire start up screen and does nothing. I can get the windows 98 boot disk menu to come up and run fdisk and it says there is a c: and d: drive partitioned on the hard drive. when i try and format either nothing happens, and also i cant get cd rom support because only the floppy or the cdrom can be in at one. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!

Preferred Solution: ibm thinkpad all sorts of f_d up

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have been away from my PC for a while. Its an old model, SP2, 512MB RAM.

I used it after a year and there are whole lots of problems. For start, it says, "Windows - No Disk" error. Then whenever I try to run NFS MW or LOTR Fellowship (dont mock me), both come out with a blank black screen and then nothing happens. I have to press Ctrl+Alt+Del to get out.

FM09 runs smoothly though. Running Dxdiag shows no problem.

The virus database is out-of-date but scanning has not solved any problems.

I can't even configure the Registry.

Test your memory. Best method is to run this overnight and get 5 or more passes out of it.
RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Also you should probably check windows files (this is a quick one you can actually do it first if you want)
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
sadly given the completely random nature of the crash reports I'm thinking memory for the moment.

a random dump (they're all completely different)

Typically caused by drivers passing bad memory descriptor lists (ie: calling

I do a lot of MSWORD spreadsheet sorts. But after selecting the cell, it takes a lot of clicks: edit>select col, then tools>sort>sort all the info> OK > ascending

That's seven clicks for each sort.

Any way to set up a macro, or get it to default to selecting the column of the cell I'm in, and sorting all the info (ascending) with just one keystroke?

Or, am I just dreaming of a world that will never be????

A:MSWORD sorts

Simple answer would be to use Excel as the spreadsheet, you are asking a Word Processor to do something it's not really good at or primarily designed for.

I have been having tons of problems lately with my computer. Dell just replaced the motherboard today. I cant run big installs. I tried running Office 2003 setup, no go, I get errors like "error 1305: Setup cannot read file C:\<filename> check you network connecetion or, if you are installing from cd-rom, be sure that the disc is in the drive." I get the same with office. it tends to trigger on the same file, like on office its Hatten.ttf. IO received the same trying to install a Windows 2003 Demo and XP Pro. In Windows 2003 the message was "File disk.sys caused an unexpected error (47872) at line 5274..." The file Windows XP sets off on is volsnap.sys. I tried two different CD drives, nothing worked. I dont know whats wrong with this comp. Thanks

A:All sorts of errors

What size of power supply is on the unit? Is it overburdened?
Can you even boot into Windows?

Dell usually sends someone out who needs help installing a motherboard (seen it with my own eyes).
I'm supprised your PC even boots.
They may have misdiagnosed the problem (most likely {my opinion}).

Try to use your recovery disks. It may be a corrupt installation of Windows. Make sure to back up though.
It doesn't sound like a cycle redundancy error. More along the lines of a corrupt installation.
Again it could be a misdiagnosed problem (bad memory, hdd or hdd boot sector, proc oubtfully}, etc..)

I am having a bunch of issues with my computer, and always, all the issues come at one time! I'll just start off by numbering them from most important to get fixed a.s.a.p. to the least important.

1. All of my Windows keep shutting themselves down! When I open Firefox sometimes it works for a few minutes, then all of a sudden just closes with no error or anything. Other times it has an error "Failure to initialize properly" (I will update this post with the exact error next time I open F.F.) other times when I click the Firefox shortcut on my desktop it will say "Firefox has encountered a problem" with the options to "Report Problem to Microsoft" "Dont Send". I put firefox in Safemode (through cmd prompt) and disabled all scripts and it still did the same thing in safemode. Now here's the catch. All of a sudden my MSN Messanger started doing the SAME thing. It terminates the whole program. It doesnt just sign out--it shuts down completely. Then I ****think**** that IE has done the same thing a couple of times now.

-This all started yesterday-- about 1 day after I updated I.E. to the newest version (from a very old version) and about 1 day after I updated my Firefox to the newest version (from the previous version)

Now this leads me to my next problem...

I updated I.E. for one reason. Whenever I am on a website all links, urls, anything that should be "clickable" is not clickable on I.E. --What happens is when ... Read more

Hello today,

I've been here before and really liked who I was working with last time, hopefully we'll have a similar experience. Basically, its the same computer as before. Except it actually started working for a while, hard drive was replaced and windows was reinstalled I believe, I never saw any of the work done, and the computer didn't exactly come back happy. Our computer guy knows very little. Now that I've gotten to it, There are all sorts of popups, usually twitter.com or digg or something, at the login screen. Well today I sat down and looked at the comp wondering what was wrong, and I booted into safe mode and ran Rkill, I had one task that was killed : userinit.exe

I'm currently running malware bytes, and it has found one piece so far, so I'm going to wait for the full scan to complete, and then if that fixes it I'll let you know. I'll post my hijack log.

If you want me to do another log let me know.

So I restarted in safe mode and ran a full scan using Mcafee and it found nothing. I downloaded Spybot, and it wouldn't even start up. I downloaded Hijackthis and again it would not even start up. Now I noticed that whatever I have is also preventing Windows Defender to update as well. Some sort of virus has breached my security and I am scared at what it could do next. Any help would be great.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

Before we start: Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
1.Please do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
2.Please reply to this thread, do not start another!
3.Please tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
4.Please tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
5.Please try as much as possible not to run anything while executing a fix.

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

This is a really silly little nit, but I was wondering if anyone knew this... in previous versions of Windows, a file that was shorter came alphabetically before any file with the same name with a suffix; MYDOC.doc would come alphabetically before MYDOC2.doc, for example. But in XP, suffixes come before shorter names, so if I was sorting my files by name, I'd see MYDOC2.doc, MYDOC3.doc, MYDOC4.doc, etc. and then after all of that MYDOC.doc. I'm not sure why this is -- I thought it might be because extensions are no longer treated separately from the filename in XP and the period might just come after letters and numbers alphabetically, but that's not the case either, since a period is 0x2E in ASCII and a zero is 0x30.

Is there any way to get XP to sort file names "properly", i.e. shorter file names before longer ones with suffixes?

A:The way XP sorts files by name...

I must say, I never noticed that before. If I see or hear of anything on how to change that, I will post that here.

The annoyance that gets me is that when mapping network drives through the gui, it always presents the last available drive letter instead of the first available.

So the first time I mapped my server drives to my workstation, I had the servers c: drive on z:, the d: drive on y, and the e drive on x:

Ok, I have just about 15 minutes ago had a huge attack of spyware. I have lots of messages from things like "Internet Security 2010" etc. I can't use task manager or regedit because it gives me an "application cannot be executed. The file is infected" error. It keeps playing the system error sound (which I have changed to a nice telephone sound instead of the ear piercing default one). And firefox keeps jumping to ad sites.

I honestly don't know how this happened. I'm not bad with computers (I proggramed my first AI shortly after my thirteenth birthday) but this just came out of the blue. I was downloading visual basic from microsoft (I wanted to put the basics of a text based game I had written in QBasic into VB) when my windows firewall was turned off by a virus, then about ten minutes later internet explorer (which I never use) popped up with an ad site. Shortly after internet security 2010 started running and I started an AVG and Malwarebytes scan. AVG turned up several viruses and I restarted my computer like it told me to. When my computer woke up again I had an error message saying something about viruses and how I shouldn't use my computer until I had gotten rid of them. Also my background was black with a green rectangle saying about viruses and how I shoud rid myself of them.

This had happened before and got to such a state that my computer just packed up, and we were charged ?100 to fix it again. Last time it happened it was ... Read more

My computer has not been "normal" in quite some time. I am under the assumption that I have the "Conficker" worm. 'Though my knowledge of computers only goes barely beyond skin deep. I am aware that some of these problems might not be related, I just want to paint a full picture.... I have Windows XP 32 bit and use Mozilla Firefox.First off I can't get rid of AVG. I have been unhappy with it for quite some time and have been unable to get rid of it. I understand this is a common problem. I did attempt to delete it from the registry. I am aware that this might have been a mistake....I can't download anything from Microsoft.com, softpedia, and seemingly random other sites, very often I would have been trying to download something to help rectify the situation. They never work. It directs me to a page resembling as if I didn't have connection to the internet. "Unable to connect"Internet Explorer has not worked in quite some time, and I can't download it (any version) or uninstall it.My CD burner will ONLY work using BurnAware... and I've tried numerous. *not sure that's entirely relevant*Fairly often, I would say at least once a week, I receive a phony prompt from an even phonier program prompting me that my computer is infected. One more thing... This used to happen a lot, but hasn't in quite some time. And just recently began doing it again. When I do a Google search, I can no longer click on the links that Google presents me. When I do I am immediately redirected to a different site... I can copy and past the URL. I just can't click the link directly from my google search page. The website I get redirected to is not always the same, and it appears to redirect a few times before actually deciding to go to a page... Here are some of the pages it takes me too.... The search I used for the first couple examples was "meow".

Since doing this I have discovered that if I continue to click on licks over and over again from the Google page, it will eventually stop doing it for that search word... meaning... I searched "meow" and clicked on four or five links and was redirected to one of the above sites, but then stopped doing that and would act normally. The same thing occurs wh... Read more

I've looked at the other posts and it seems that you're not too sure of the browser so I'm wondering if it might be a good idea to find out a few things. Right click the browser icon and click Properties and post the info regarding the browser. It should be something like Internet Explorer 7 (if it's IE of course)

You say that when you close a window it closes the browser. Do you get a message when you try to close a tab, along the lines of "You are about to close ? tabs..."

If not then you need to enable the tick box on that warning message.

Finally, you need to check the connection on your PC. Which operating system is it? XP? Vista? The answer to that will depend on that answer

Hello, I've been trying to see what is wrong with my friend's PC, which is self-built and about 3 months old at the most. What is strange that it keeps getting different types of BSODs, the ones I noticed were caused by tcpip.sys, ntfs.sys, ntoskrnl.exe. I already reinstalled windows, which got rid of the atikmdag.sys and atikmpag.sys BSODs, but the others still keep popping up while playing games or sometimes when PC is just idle.

System specifications:
Motherboard ASRock FM2A55M-VG3
CPU AMD Athlon X4 760K Quad Core
GPU ASUS Radeon HD 7770
PSU Corsair CX430M
RAM Crucial 4GB DDR3 Ballistix
OS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64bit

A:Been getting all different sorts of .sys BSODs

Hi -

All 3 of the drivers you mentioned are Microsoft Windows drivers and are not the actual cause - merely defaults because the true cause cannot be determined. It's either a 3rd party driver or a hardware issue.

tcpip.sys - Windows networking related driver
ntfs.sys - Windows File system driver (related to HDD)
ntoskrnl.exe - Windows NT Kernel

The bugchecks on the 3 dumps -
(1) 0x50 - invalid memory referenced
(2) 0x109 - kernel corruption

Both are likely RAM related or some other unknown hardware failure affecting RAMs ability to properly hold kernel code.

I don't see any issues with 3rd party drivers at this time.

Test RAM - memtest86+ - one stick at a time; alternate slots -

Test RAM With Memtest86+ - Sysnative Forums

RAM is a good start, but I think there is an underlying hardware issue. Unfortunately, the dumps are incapable of telling us exactly what piece of hardware is the issue here.

Regards. . .

I have a very inconsistent file sort problem. When I look at files through "My Computer" it seems that 1/2 the time the files are sorted z to a with the files at top and the folders at the bottom. This also occurs about 3/4 of the time in excel, access, etc. How can I be sure this won't happen. (I've already tried using the explorer and file types>views and selecting the option for all folders to look like the current one -- it didn't work.) I am using all xp products (office and windows.)

A:File sorts

In My Computer select a drive, View menu option, Details option, and click on the File Name heading, which will re-sort the files. Then you can change the view to whatever you like.

This one got me good, started 3 days ago from a acrobat page file.

My desktop takes forever to boot up(25-30 mins), when it does explorer does not start. (No icons, start menu, right clicky) Taskmgr does work, If I try and manually start explorer.exe I get access denied. I can not run msconfig, mbam, control panel, eset or any internet browsers. Ive attempted to boot in safe mode with networking, but the system just freezes and requires hard power reset. Ive tryed to do the rkill name change and mbam name change combinations all without luck (in safe mode and normal). rkill does run, however does not find any problems to terminate. mbam will not even install.

Not really sure what else to try at this point, any thought ideas?

ok first of all. i come to my computer and i see one of those fake "click hear to remove potential spyware" things that is actually malware itself. i ignored cuz i am smarter than that and i instead ran norton internet security. it told me it had removed a spy ware called "spyquake" but immediately after i dismissed the dialogue box i got a message saying that spyquake had been installed. i went to my start menu and sure enough "new programs installed" it was spyquake. i went to add/remove and removed it from there, and ran norton again. and again it said it removed it. then i tried my internet explorer and no response. nothing happened but my task manager displayed that internet explorer was running, but i couldnt see it anywhere. soon my task manager became disabled as well "by administrator." and the "shared" folder for limewire is full of about 700 things i never downloaded. they are things like cracks and patches for games and such, and i cant delete them because they're "in use." it was only in the past hour i discovered that netscape navigator was unharmed by all of this, and this is where i say HELP!!!!!!!!! i do not think that is is spyware quake but just spyquake. please respond quickly because i take this laptop to college on sunday!!!

atmclk.exe is definitely adware and it is related to spyware falcon and that family of browser hijacks. Here is link to information about that proces amtclk.exe infoIt appears you do indeed have a spyware quake hijack, among other things, based upon your symptoms. I suggest posting a HJT log in the "HJT logs and analysis' forum here at BC.Please read Prep Guide for Posting HJT LogsPlease follow these preparation directions exactly. Then run HJT and post the log it creates in the HijackThis Logs and Analysis Forum, which is found at this link: HJT ForumDO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET. An expert HJT helper will promptly respond to your post within a few days with instructions on how to fix your computer. NOTEOnce you have made your post, please do not add any replies to your post (don't bump it). HJT helpers look for posts with 0 replies to determine the proper order to help users. If you are interested in trying the self-help guide for removing spyware quake, that tutorial can be found at this link: How to Remove Spyware QuakeYou also said you are having a problem with Limewire. Just a tip: It's generally a good idea to make sure p2p programs are not running on startup if that is the case. It appears you may have more than one malware infection and there isn't much help we can provide through this forum. Please post a log in the HJT forum and we'll get your computer cleaned up

What security software do you have installed?

Read other 2 answers

The problems started a couple days ago. I needed to burn an ISO to a CD, and Img burn had always been such a nice program. I was a bit worried, but downloaded and installed it from one of the links on the Imgburn site.
The Windows 7 machine had no antivirus software on it (I know, but my worst problems have come with av installed) so I couldn't do a quick AVG scan.
So Im getting bombed with adware. I go to uninstall, and sure enough, a bunch of other stuff is on the machine. I try to uninstall, and the box pops up that says "do you want to allow this to make changes to your computer " comes up. I clicked "yes" at least once. I'm guessing that was a really bad idea?
I downloaded AVG, did a scan, found 11 things.
Last night I downloaded REVOUninstaller to get the other programs off. Even after that and another AVG scsn, I still had issues.
So I found a site about how to get rid of one of the remaining programs, and ran several scans, all of which found stuff on the first pass. Downloaded some off this site, and generally did almost all this:http://malwaretips.com/blogs/remove-playthru-player-ads/
So then I still need a burner, so I tried looking for a good copy of imgburn (I am wondering if it exists.) I went to Softonic, and it said something about problems with imgburn. So I thought something like, "oh good, a reputable site." That's when the problems really started.
I dowloaded the burner they recommended, AVG caught something. I think I tried it again, at one po... Read more

Hiya and welcome to Tech Support Guy

Are you still having this problem? If so, do the following:
Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop

Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and... Read more

Hey, this computer is really messed up. When I try and run IE it usually freezes up the first time so I have to end-task it. The second attempt does the same thing, only after I end-task it I have to end-task explorer.exe and then run it again. Then after that I can make a third attempt on IE and while its loading the homepage (which it really isn't), if I tell it to go to another page instead, it will. Thus after 5 minutes I can finally surf the web. I've run Ad-Aware and Spybot but I think I still need some help if someone doesn't mind.

Is it possible to make windows filemanager explorer sort filenames in a way so it doesn't include names with THE under T?

A:How explorer sorts filenames.

Hello Premier69,

The only way that I know of is to not have The at the beginning of the file name. You might use something like file name, the or just file name instead for the file name to help sort it the way you are wanting.

Hope this helps,

Hello shred1970, I am SifuMike and I will be helping you. I've managed to pick up a few nasties, (Smitfraud-c, coolwwwsearch, coolwwwsearch.badzonemap, coolwwwsearch.googlems, neededware and avenueA.inc.What is finding these nasties? Please tell me the nasties locations. You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan. Disable your antivirus program and go here to run BitDefender Online Scan. Click on I Agree. Avoid clicking on other links as you don't need to try out the full install at this point, just the online scanner. When the ActiveX Control has loaded, click on "Click here to scan". Please be patient, as this scan may take a few hours. It all depends on the number of files on your computer. NOTE: If you are running XP SP2, you may need to click on the Information Bar to allow the ActiveX to install and may need to repeat the BitDefender Online Scan. When BitDefender completes the scan, select the "Detected Problems" tab. Click on "Click here to export scan". Save the file as an HTML to your Desktop. Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser. Hi again guys,

Thanks for help in solving my virus issues.

the reason for me having a good clean of the pc was because during a live radio show my machine went into hibernation mode of sorts.

i use a couple of programs during my live stream nad have no problems in the past as such, last summer had a couple of shutdowns which i think was due to the heat as it was a hot summer.

since last summer things have been fine til last week when twice my pc went into this hibernation mode.

no warning or nothing, just instant hibernation.

checked all my power settings and have the box unchecked for hibernation and all the other boxes marked as 'Never'

from this state i cannot hit the spacebar or any other key to bring out of hibernation.

When this happens mainly? either when im streaming music out on a live show or simply just listening to a live internet radio stream.

The tower light stays on as does the fans.

Even though its probably not hibernation its the only thing i could call it so it would make sense, or maybe sleep if hibernation maybe isn't the correct term.

HP i xtreme
2.7 processor
1gb ram
80gb & 25gb internal drives
XP pro sp2

thanks for looking.

A:Random Hibernation of sorts.

Just gone into bios and took readings from 'PC Health Status' menu.
CPU Warning Temp - Disabled
System Temp - 33c/91f
CPU Temp - 54-57c/129-134f
System Fan Speed - 0 rpm
CPU Fan Speed - 1962 rpm
Vcore - 1.68 - 1.72v
+3.3V - 3.31-3.32
+5V - 5.61-5.64v
+12V - 13.19-13.37v

VBAT(V) - 3.60-3.61v

Shutdown Temp - Disabled

Maybe this info will help in someway, hoovered n cleaned out all dust from PC and main Fan/CPU unit, taken apart, cleaned, re fitted.

went to stream music again and after 10mins of streaming all went quiet and dark on me.

Kept Task manager open at the time and didnt seem to be excessive CPU used.

After doing everything in my power to solve the problems faced by a new client, I decided to post some informations here in order to find possible causes for them before reformat his computer. I used SFdiag Tool to gather some data. In addition, here is some information about what I witnessed:

1. run msconfig, as well as other Windows services, require administrator privileges despite it being the administrator account;

2. they all received the UAC shield in yellow - "The program with an unknown publisher needs your permission to start";

3. through the resource monitor, I could see that the TrustedInstaller was responsible for all the faults of memory;

4. drivers, Windows updates and some programs could never be installed or uninstalled successfully - multiple instances of "wermgr" in task manager ...

5. sfc / scannow can not fix all the files; chkdsk found no errors; can not run System Restore, etc.

That's all I can remember for now. Thanks in advance!

A:All sorts of unusual situations...

Your #4. Can you open and use their anti virus after updating it. Or install Malwarebytes Anti Malware updating and run it. Also can you create a new user account and see what you can do with that account.

Having a host of interesting problems with my computer recently. Something is changing files on boot up including my netdi.dll (used for my DSL modem) and now the DirectX files (Games requiring DX say it does not exist). I am also unable to run Ad-Aware (it gets stuck in the "loading definitions" phase) and Spybot is near to useless as it takes roughly 5 hours to do a full scan for some reason (major hangups around the CoolWebSearch detection). Needless to say it is gettting my kinda pissed off and I'm considering robbing a bank to get cash for a new computer.

Here is the HJT Analyzer log and even to my untrained eyes it seems kinda empty of threats.

Log was analyzed using HijackThis Analyzer - Updated on 1/7/05

Nothing looks suspicious here.

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

I have been battling computer problems for a few days now.

It seems that all sorts of viruses/malware/spyware have decided to infest my computer at the same time.

I have Windows XP SP2. I have McAfee VirusScan 12.1.

For a few days, I was battling the "Antivirus08". But I think we got that under control. Then yesterday, the clock in the task bar switched to military time and it says "VIRUS ALERT!" next to it. I also had a blue screen as my desktop that said my computer was infected.

McAfee tried to tell me that "joke-bluescreen.c" was on my computer, and I tried to have it remove it, but it wouldn't. So I searched in c:\windows\system32 for the file name. When I tried to delete that - it said it couldn't because it was being used.

I don't know what to do at all. But it is really frustrating. Please help!

Being a resourceful young man with very limited funds, I've come to the end of my tether in terms of disk space, as have several other members of my family. Now, I've got an unused HPaq something or other sitting about, and I've been contemplating converting that into a "server" machine, dumping all extra files onto it. Bear in mind that the contents of our hard drives is stuff that can't just be burned and deleted. I've considered that; wouldn't work.
Anyway. Back to the HPaq. Delete the old partition [it had been used by someone with less than noble intentions, leave it at that] and reinstall Windows. Enable disk compression, since things won't have to be running, maybe create two [or three?] partitions, and... what else should I do? Would upgrading the cooling system since it's going to be on for prolonged periods of time be a wise idea? Any other utilities you'd recommend? Did you actually read all of this crap?

Oh, dear god, I misspelled Creating in the thread title.

Hi there,

Firstly, I am running Windows XP.

I seem be to be infected with the msb.exe virus as it is showing in my processes. I can run Malwarebytes the first time I run it but it shuts down when running a scan. Then I try to re-open it and I always gets the error "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item". I used inherit.exe to sucessfully open Malwarebytes but the same problem re-occurs when I run a scan - it just shut downs. This is also the case for Spybot S&D and a couple of other programs.

In addition to this, it sometimes plays an audio file in the background even though I have no applications open, and my PC is running considerably slower.

I followed the instructions and downloaded dds.scr to my desktop, ran it, but no log files were generated. I have no script blocker as far as I know.

I ran GMER Rootkit Scanner twice. It shut down both times when it was more than half way through the scan.

Any help would be appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Hi everyone, 1st post :)
I have built a pc (last year) and managed to get it up and going. It was fine for a while but started getting ram-related bsods...so got a different ram set (2x4gb corsair set) and it was fine...could leave it on all week and it would be fine.

Now its started playing up again - at first it kept shutting down. Now it just comes up with a blank screen...but a "shown" black screen (you know the one, its like a light black as the screen shows a black screen rather than the dark black of a screen turned off)...gpu overheating maybe?
Anyways, that happens when i leave it alone for a while...i can leave it an hour or so and it will be fine (screensaver) but anything after that is the black screen.

I cant remember why, but i have looked at the driver verifier tool one day, and ever since then the pc has been VERY slow at everything - boot, startup, internet is unbearably slow, even right clicking the desktop takes a couple of secs to get a menu up!!! Shudown is slow too. I have also noticed that the msconfig startup list is at least 3 times the size it was before i did the verifier.

Ok - what i have tried:-

-virus scan...all ok
-Spyware, etc scan...all ok
-extra fans in the case - no change
-system restore...pc shutdown before it had a chance to complete

System specs:-

Crosshair iv formula mobo
Phenom II X4 cpu
Corsair 2x4gb ram
500w psu
Radeon 4500 (i think) gpu
Samsung 1tb hdd
Lg lightscribe drive
