Some games visuals freezing

Q: Some games visuals freezing

Hello,

Recently purchased Hotline Miami from the Steam store and very eager to play. Starts up fine, however the visuals freeze whenever the window is maximized - ie, minimizing and maximizing the game window very quickly over and over produces a choppy, stop motion kind of effect. The audio plays fine.

This has happened in the past when I tried to run ToonTown Rewritten.

Here's my dxdiag

Preferred Solution: Some games visuals freezing

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

OK, pretty specific set of issues here; I haven't found anybody on forums and the like that seems to have the same.
I'm not much of a computer guy, so any assistance or pointers at all would be truly appreciated.

I'll describe the issue as completely as I can, in this order: 1.system specs, 2.user specs, 3.symptoms and non-symptoms, 4.what I've tried, 5.possible diagnoses(?) and thoughts.

1. System specs
-HP Pavilion g series laptop, purchased in 2011.
-Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit, version 6.1.7601 SP1 Build 7601
-AMD Phenom? II P960 Quad-Core Processor, 1800 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
-Norton and Malwarebytes for anti-bad stuff
-Not sure what other specs would be useful. (Let me know if I should add something.)
-Note: I've never done a wipe or system reinstall, because I've never had a reason to -- everything has worked pretty fine so far, given a troubleshooting session here and there.

2. User specs
-Super vanilla case -- not a gamer, no special software, try to minimize what I'm running at any given time. I don't have lots of programs running in the background (that I know of) and when I run my web browser, I rarely have more than a few tabs open.
-really like Win7 and would like to keep it for as long as I can.
-Not wealthy (to put it lightly) and have had a couple bad experiences with repair people in the past, so I'm a bit non-trusting and would rather do as much as I can (with the help of kind-hearted folks like yourself) before I resort to a tech ... Read more

ok.. so im not 'techgal' but im not quite ready to relinquish this to a 'pro'

i have 2 pc's
mines fine.. monitor and all

kids pc didnt want to wake up this morning... i first thought it was the mouse (i just installed a new usb mouse 3 days ago and the optical light wasnt on this morning).. i have mixed and matched my 2 monitors and 2 towers.. and 2 mouses.. and have come to the conclusion that it is the kids tower that is unresponsive... even though the monitor wont 'wake up'... if i plug it into my tower it will.... but if i plug the unresponsive tower into my monitor.. it wont do anything
so.... 1 last step before i fork out $100 to have someone tell me what the problem is.... how the heck do i even attempt to see what the problem is if i cant get anything onscreen?????
im going to 'assume' that the usb mouse is the problem considering that the kids dont have email and dont download anything from the net.. how could it have gotten a virus..... and then there is the video thing... how to tell if a card is bad.. im clueless when i cant see anything on screen but not helpless if i had some direction... id appreciate it

I can't seem to figure this one out. It's only on certain software and downloads like Handbrake, and Registry Patrol so far but it's really annoying and prevents me from being able to see all of the opened page. It's like the picture on the page is moved or is just being cut off for some reason. It looks like it could also just be zoomed in too far for some odd reason. I wish I had a picture to show but I'm working on getting a download that will take screen shots for free. So as soon as I get a screen shot I'll show you just what my problem is. But anyways if anyone thinks they know what I'm talking about. Please... Help me.

Hi everyone! Im new to the forums so thanks in advance for the support

Whenever I try to play a game on my laptop I only get about half the visuals...I see the basic outline of it (not just in the game, including menus ect) its too difficult to see through

My computer specs are

AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 mobile
Nvidia GeForce 7600 Graphics Card

Windows XP home edition SP3

Also it is running 35-40 fps...should it be running 60 with 3GB of ram?

I have a Dell Inspiron 660, with a Dell 2009W flat screen monitor. The OS is 8.1. There are no apparent problems with the computer. I ran the support assist diagnostic-no problem. That test included the monitor. The two websites are an automobile forum and a movie download site.

The automotive forum shows fine at its main page, but clicking to go to another page brings up a red screen on which I can barely read the text, or sometimes a white background with the format different from the usual style.

The movie download site has had its problems with pop ups but now in addition the display is almost like a reduced version - the graphics are somehow missing or distorted. I am sorry I do not know enough to describe these problems better.

I probably could write to the webmaster at each site but it seemed peculiar that both sites are showing up like this at the same time.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey guys, I recently bought a computer for the sole purpose of being able to play current games, and I did quite well. The specs are:

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz (8 CPUs)
Memory: 3326MB RAM
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285

etcetc... Not a bad PC by any means. It gets the job done.... Or used to.

These days I can barely ever play games. I used to be able to play Call of Duty Moden Warfare 2 with no problems. Now the second I enter a game, the graphics will freeze up on me. I know it's only the graphics because I can still ctrl+alt+del, and the sound will continue going. When I try to play Champions Online, I can sometimes play for hours without it freezing, and sometimes it will happen moments after logging in.

I remember blue screening once out of the perhaps 30 or so times it's done it, and a couple times I've gotten an error stating:

"The nv4_disp display driver has stopped working normally. Save your work and reboot the system to restore full display functionality. The next time you reboot the machine a dialog will be displayed giving you a chance to upload data about this failure to Microsoft."

This has been happening for about 2 weeks now, and the things I've tried are unplugging my video card and plugging it into another slot, unplugging and plugging my RAM back in, updating the drivers to the latest ones, rolling the drivers back to previous "stable" builds, adjusting audio settings (which apparently could have ... the culprets include:

the screen just freezes and whatever sound was playing at the time repeats itself over and over. the computer accepts no input (ctrl alt delete, esc, etc.). and i am left with no choice but cold boot.

my past laptop (dell latitude cpx 500mhz, ati rage pro card, 256mb ram) played the games without freezing.

would an upgrade to 512mb of ram help at all?

Hey all,

I have recently purchased a new computer and for some reason every time I play any video game it locks up after about a good 20 to 30mins of play.

Here are the specs :

CPU: Q6600 2.4Ghz
Motherboard: Asus P5N-E SLI
RAM: 4 x OCZ Platinum XTC REV.2 PC2-6400 2GB 1GB DDR2-800 CL4-4-4-15 240PIN DIMM Dual Channel
Graphics Card: EVGA 8800GT 512MB
PSU : Antec Trio Power 650W
OS: Vista Home Premium 64bit

I have updated all the drivers for my graphics card, motherboard, updated windows. Do not know what the problem is. Also the CPU temp idle is about 35 to 45 C and MB is about 35 to 40 C

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You , Newbie

Hi Newbie
Check the system requirments for the video games your trying to play. Any of them say they can run on 64 bit Vista? or Vista Premium?

Well I'm playing Age of Pirates 2 I'm 20 mins in the game and BAM my pc freezed(anyone that owns age of pirates 2 knows there is a load of bugs) so I really payed no mind to it freezing.
I start hitting Alt+Ctrl+Del does not work I hit Caps,Scroll,Num Locks no lights come on.
So I do a hard restart hoping that the Freeze was a One time deal.
Than I Start playing Call of Duty 4 15 mins in same Freeze.
hard restart again, I do a Bios Ram check all good and check the Gfx card Temp 69-70C bit high for it.
It was running 45-50c a month before so I get 2 PCI Fans to help cool it. the next day I take the Gfx Card out and run it on the mobo North Bridge NVIDIA GeForce 8200 try a game out and No Freezing.
I get the fans put them in with the Gfx card they take down the temp on my cpu by 3C and none on my Gfx.
so I go to xfx tech Support and get the run around... Driver Sweeper... Make sure you have the new drivers..... freezing like this points me towards the memory or the power supply......

Whenever I play Eventually they will freeze (In about 5-10 mins)
It's Really Annoying... Any tips?

My Card is 256mb Memory and Im using 1680x1050 (32bit) reso with 60hz

I know its NOT:

My Gfx Card Temp
Screen Resolution (My card is always @ 60hz no matter what resolution)

I suspect its my Power Supply
I hope it is so I can get a new one And be able to run my new Gfx card (Geforce 9600)

A:Games Freezing..

If you mean 110Watts then yes this is low (too low for an addon Video card)
(I note that you have removed the reference stating you had a 110 Power Supply)

You can also do the below (freely) before purchasing a better Power Supply:

Please run Memtest on your Ram
And confirm all your Device Drivers are up to date
Also make sure all Windows Security Updates (and Service Packs) are completed

Okay so here's my problem. When I'm playing certain games on my PC, like Grand Theft Auto 3, or Halo which I just bought, my computer will freeze up on me, but when I'm playing some other games, like Hitman Codename 47, I won't have any problems.

I've tried updating my video card and sound card drivers, with no luck, and I've already spent 2 weeks corresponding through email with the people at Rockstar North trying to figure out what the problem is, cause I thought it was only GTA3.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? And if so, were you able to fix it and how?

The games ran fine before the upgrade. When I went to the Administrative>Events place on the comp. it says I have a PctSpk error 1063 StartServiceControlDispatcher failed and I can't find any info on that any help would be GREATLY appreciated...Julie

I just got a new computer today and when I run doom 3 after I play for a couple minutes the game will either freeze or crazy colours will go everywhere inthe game then itll freeze. i have a amd 3200, 2gb ram, 9800 pro. Could it be it is overheating? or that the power supply isnt enough (350 watt). If it is, how much does it cost to get more power? Thanks.

A:Games freezing

Hi Luke,

I had similar problems myself when I first ran Doom; I have a similar system, and same GPU as you. There are some issues with ATi cards and doom3, it tends to run better on NVidea cards.

First stop, just try the lastest ATi drivers, they did coincidentally post one on the catalyst site about the same time as Doom3 was released. That worked for me.

there are other, doom-specific, beta catalyst 4.9 drivers available if the above doesn't work.

alternatively, some people have reported success with a 3rd party driver like this one from guru 3d.

There's no reason why you shouldn't be able to play on high-quality settings with a minimum res of 1024x768, possibly higher, with your rig. You just need to tweak things a bit until it works ok.

There's nothing wrong with your power, until it stops working.

I downloaded a new driver for the video card and that didnt help. I turned off my McAfee virus scan and that didnt help either. I have several fans so I dont think it's over heating. Hi, a week ago a few of my big processor-heavy PC games suddenly started freezing for no apparent reason after about 15 minutes of play (Arma2/Arrowhead/Age of Empire) despite running fine for a couple of years, and I have to switch off the PC to get out of the freeze.
.I ran CCleaner, AVG and Adaware and re-installed the games but the freeze problem remains.
My other games are unaffected and run fine. Any suggestions as to what I can try next?
The only possible clue I can think of is that my Google Earth started running jerkily about the same time the game freezes began, so perhaps GE did one of its automatic updates and may have triggered the freezes in some way?
My machine specs-

A:Games keep freezing

I've solved it by uninstalling Google Earth, so it seems I was right, the latest GE v 7 auto-update messed up my system somehow and caused the games to freeze!
I've now re-installed an older GE v 5 which doesn't affect the games, and I've also selected the GE "Do not auto-update" box..

Unfortunately When i play games that required any stress on my system it locks up and i have to reboot. I have resorted to playing Diablo II as of late. I ran memtest86 for 2 hrs and no errors were logged. And i ran Prime95 overnight for 7 hours. The system is still doing fine this morning. I know the system is not overheating either, all temps run in the green and games lockup before they would even get a chance to get hot(usually in Menu). Any suggestions?

Then, about every 3 or 4 minutes, it keeps doing this. It is really wrecking gameplay. I have updated drivers and gone into msconfig and changed the way the comp starts up. Nothing seems to work. The red light goes on on my CPU when this is happening. It almost seems that there is another process running that is interfering with the performance. I run Windows XP. Hi There,

I have this really annoying problem that while playing a game (COD4 for example) I get 5-15 mins into it and it just freezes. Really fast sound looping starts and I can't CTRL+ALT+DEL out of it. My only solution is to do a hard restart and let it boot up again.

I had this problem earlier in the year after I got a new video card and I thought I had fixed it. But a few months ago I did a clean install and this probably deleted the settings that fixed it.

Any help you can give is much appreciated.

Cheers,
RedFOX217

A:Games Keep Freezing!!

One of the first (and probably the easiest and cheapest (i.e. free) things to check) is your temperatures.

Download and install HWMonitor then run the program. Leave it running in the background and play a game for 5 - 10 mins and exit (before it crashes the machine).

Post either post a screenshot of the temperatures (minimum and maximum) or type them out in a new reply.

Also, can you provide more information about your system, I can see what you have in your profile but could do with more. If it is a 'big brand' name like HP, Dell etc. then what is the exact make and model. If it's a self or custom build, what is the make and model of Motherboard, CPU, RAM (including amount), Graphics Card, Power Supply (including wattage), number of hard drives and/or optical drives (CD/DVD) etc. the more info you provide the better answers you will get.

What operating system are you using and is it 32 or 64 bit, are all your drivers fully up to date?

I could be wrong but the specs for your graphics card say it requires 38A on the +12V rail from the power supply. The power supply specs state it has 4 X +12V rails at 18A each.

If I am understanding all the specifications the card uses 2 X PCI connectors. If they are coming from seperate 12V rails you only have 36A available so it is underpowered.

Ok i'll explain first of all the problem and then what i have tried so far to correct it.

Basically the games i have playing run perfectly for 10 - 40 mins and then it locks up, sometimes with the sound looping, sometimes without, forcing me to reboot. Example of games this has happened in, KOTOR, CS, Raven Shield.

Ok now for what i've tried attempting to resolve this issue.

1. Update all drivers on my system. (Problem still occurs).
2. Re-installed XP with sp1/sp2 and without. (Problem still occurs).
3. Disabled Sound-Card (Problem still occurs).
4. Used MemTest program to check for faulty ram, ran fine with no errors.
5. Lowered Hardware Acceleration. (Now when i lowered this i was able to play KOTOR on certain levels, anywhere else the games fps went to low).
6. Used various Nvidia drivers, using drivercleanerpro inbetween installing them. (Problem still occurs).

System:
2.6 ghz p4
512 DDR RAM
Nvidia GeForce FX 5700 Ultra
Windows XP

Any suggestions will be much apperciated. Ive been playing around for weeks now, its really starting to get to me.

Thanks

Ok, whenever I go into one of my games it freezes, doesn't do anything but put a little white dot in the far upper left corner. However, when I change my graphics acceleration down to none or one before none it works but way too slow to even play (like 1 step ever 5 seconds) I have tried downloading new drivers for my videocard but that didn't work, I upgraded my RAM as well. This has happened with three games so I am pretty sure it is my computer that has the problem.
I also put my dxdiag information in here as well.
