Lenovo H520 Not Booting

Q: Lenovo H520 Not Booting

Hello,I recently bought (used) a Lenovo H520 that will not boot. When I press the power button, the fans spin up and the power button stays solid on. The disk read/write light quickly flashes about every three seconds. Absolutely nothing happens on screen so I cannot access the BIOS. I got it cheap due to a bad hard drive and used an old Windows 7 drive instead. I upgraded it to Windows 10 (x64, wiping the 32-bit 7) and it worked fine. I do not know what changed between then and now but now it will not boot. I have already attempted booting without the hard drive to the same effect.Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The BIOS in the H520 10094 needs to be updated. My poor grandparents have the lenovo H520 and windows wanted them to update to windows 10, after doing so the computer wouldn't boot into windows and is stuck in a loop throwing an error that the Lenovo Service Partition has been destroyed. They call lenovo for support and all they do is ask for money. I threw the hard drive into one of my old computers and low and behold, it booted up just fine.  Sounds like an issue with the BIOS on the H520 10094 ... anyone have any ideas? I'm not going to let them give anyone their money to fix an issue caused by Lenovo's software.

Have recently bought a H520 (not H520s) with the Intel i5 3.0ghz processor and 4gb RAM.I wanted to upgrade the RAM to whatever it can take - but I can't find any info anywhere about the motherboard max. The manual is very simplistic and doesn't show the RAM limits - and I've tried various system scanners (including the usually reliable one at crucial.com), but they all incorrectly identify the motherboard as having four RAM slots - it doesn't, it has only two.So how can I find out the max RAM? I can find DDR3 1600 sticks in 4, 8 and even 16gb flavours - it'd be great if I can get 2x 16gb in there, but I get a feeling that with a low-end system like this, that'd be pushing it.

A:H520 max RAM

Should add - am running Windows8 64bit, so not constrained by OS limits.

My desktop (H520) will not start unless I remove and re-insert the ram.It works fine while it is on but as soon as you shut it off this happens.I leave it on 24-7 so I don't have to open it up and play with the ram.
Would this be a ram problem or a socket problem?

Hello Justonne1962Thanks for using the Lenovo forums.Try a static discharge for this, it may help to resolve the issue or at least get rid of any built up static on the motherboard.1. Plug the cable into the socket and the machine. 2. Turn power off at the wall. 3. Hold down the power button on the front of the machine for 1 minute 4. Turn wall socket back on. 5. Turn machine back on.
Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.==================================================================================Did someone help you today? Thank them with a Kudo! If you find a post helpful and it answers your question, please mark it as an "Accepted Solution"!

Sorry but I'm not sure if I have a Lenovo H520 Desktop PC or an H520s PC. I am trying to cheaply fix up this previously unwanteddesktop for my parent's. Recently, I went to check my email at their home & their PC, which was still running VISTA! died at that moment. So now I've be recruited to make them at least somewhat tech savvy, on an extreme budget--Fast. Lenovo's model detection feature on the website says it's a H520-without the S, but the paperwork that was with the desktop AND other websites such as Crucial.com hardware detection app claim the desktop is a H520S. Is there a difference in the Spec's or capacity of these Models? I received a Model Number and a Machine Type Number from the app on Lenovo's site, are these meant to be kept secret like a Product Key or can I post them on a public form in regards to my question? I don't want to do something stupid! I only care because I just updated it to Windows 10 and I want to upgrade the Ram. It came with 6gb of SDRAM. I check to verify that their is only 2 slots inside the case. 1 of them has a 4GB stick & the other has a 2GB stick. I know I'm not well versed with PC repairs, but I thought that there were always 4 slots and that the sticks had to be matching pairs of speed and capacity. The original owner bought it at Staples and always hated Windows 8 so just left it in a closet unused for the past couple of years. I'm sure you've seen messages like this a million times, but I cannot get the PC to go into BIOS:I'm using Windows 10 and need to install an unsigned driver for USB on an FPGA development board. I have tried F1, F2, F12, Delete, FN+ these keys.  I have disconnected the HDD, CD and ethernet cable (so there was nothing to boot from). I've rebooted a million times and mashed the keys to no avail.  The PC refuses to go into BIOS and my dual screens remain dark (no messages, no logos, nothing).  I have a NVIDIA card installed.   Is it possible that I AM going into BIOS, but can't see it due to the NVIDIA card being installed? I've moved one of the monitor connectors to the on-board VGA connectors, but nothing. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Tony

My Lenovo Laptop recently has stopped working. It turns on and everything, it just cannot boot up.The loading screen pops up and everything, but it won't go to the login screen. When I power the laptop on, it goes on the loading screen, and stays like that for a good 5-8 minutes, then gets an error message that says"Process1_Initialization_Failed"Then it tries to go into System Recovery, but after "Loading Files" it goes into the loading screen, then transitions into a black screen. There are no options, just a black screen.I wait for an hour, and absolutely nothing happens.I made sure nothing else is plugged in except for the Charger. The laptop is a Lenovo Y51.If you need anymore information, please ask. I am having issues with booting my laptop. The other day I tried turned on my laptop and it came up with a message which disappeared before I could check what it said. It then put me in a loop with restarting my laptop with options and now it isn't booting at all. Each time I try and power on the machine the screen goes black and the lights on the front to show power and charge light up. Then after about 20 or so seconds, it shuts down. I also tried pressing the OneKey Recovery button on the left side of the device however this did the same as the power button. I stripped down the laptop to check the CMOS battery to see if that was the issue but the battery was healthy and showing 3.19 volts. What else could this issue be?  Thanks, James W.

Hidy ho all,

I have a Lenovo G505s I bought in august. Up to this point, its been a great machine. This morning (11/20/2014) I installed some updates from windows update. around 4:30 PM today, I rebooted the machine, because I had an hour break in between classes. During that reboot it tried to install those updates, and it said it failed. After the failure it said it was reverting back to the prior state before the updates were installed.

It then rebooted again. It got to the Lenovo splash screen, and some little white text on the bottom of the screen has said for the past half hour "Updating your system (5%)" with the windows 8 little circle thing spinning around just above it.

I did try restarting it by holding down the power button, but it came right back to this screen.

Google has turned up nothing yet. Has anyone else had this issue? If so, have they (you) been able to fix it?

A:Lenovo G505s not booting

I think the quickest way around this issue is to let the OS try to install the updates it might take a while to do so(which is a pain) but I would wait because you don't want to mess up your system you might loose more than the time you will wait

So, I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Z61T 9660CTO which I bought in 2007. It has served me well. Yesterday, it was working perfectly, albeit with some exxtra high heating at the bottom, close to 60-70 degrees Celcius. Then , I wanted to put in a new SSD into it. So, I took out the old HDD and then connected it, and the other SSD via USB casing to another computer running a disk cloning software. Tried it did not work. Now, I put back the old HDD into the Thinkpad, it does not start up again at all. Even the first screen which says "Thinkpad" press Blue button for recovery" does not come up now. Hard drive is not it, since the screen does not switch on at ALL. If it was HDD failure, it would say something like HDD not detected. But in this case, it does not even show the initial Thinkpad screen. So, this may be a loose connection somewhere (even though I did not remove the casing at all while removing the HDD) Both times, I removed and reattached the HDD, with the power cable removed from the Thinkpad, but, the battery was still inside the chassis. Short circuit? Bad! Someone help.

A:Lenovo Z61T not booting

In case its not clear, when I press the power button, I do not arrive at the press Del to enter BIOS screen at all. No THINKPAD screen. Just black screen and no HDD activity

My Lenovo B590 was working fine yesterday, today suddenly I can't make it boot up. I have recorded a video that demonstrates the behaviour of the Laptop on Power On:https://youtu.be/T9IcxsIgRcE It remains in an endless loop of powering up for a sec, making some click-sound and turning off immediately. Longpress power button ends the loop. AC cable is connected, battery is inserted. Things I tried that didn't solve the issue:Power On only with AC cable (normally and with 20 sec long Power press)Power On only with battery (normally and with 20 sec long Power press)Removing both RAM and trying it with one each in each of both RAM slotsProbably an issue with the motherboard? Anything else I could try?

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Sorry to hear of the problem you are experiencing.  I would try removing the optical drive and then try powering the laptop up.  If that doesn't work then remove the hard drive and power up.  Since the click sounds mechanical in nature, that would lead me to suspect either one of those devices.  If the laptop powers up with a drive removed then suspect that drive as being faulty.

Your model's User Guide will explain how to remove those drives.  Here is a link to that manual for your reference.....

Hi guys,I fresh reinstalled windows yesterday and allowed it to collect updates overnight, including drivers. This morning I wake up and powering on the machine, I am greeted with a recovery screen. Selecting exit and continue brings me back to the recovery screen.I tried refreshing it from that screen, though it asks for recovery media, of which there appears to be none, even when I have a properly configured and bootable recovery media USB key inserted. As a recovery bootable device I use a lexar 8 gb USB drive. The machine has no optical drive. The only thing I can gather is that USB and or legacy boot mode are not enabeled. As I am totally blind, I have very little knowledge of the bios of this particular device, and any decent explanations are scarce.I know how to get to them (press f2 for bios and f12 for boot menu I believe) though anything else is beyond me.Could somebody tell me what to press at the keyboard to enable USB mode, and or legacy mode, if that particular option is needed? And by the way, for those curious about how I gathered information about the recovery screens, I use an app called seeing AI, which takes screenshots of anything you tell it to, and tries to tel you what it sees.Even with good lighting, the seeing AI app isn't of much use to help navigating the bios menu. Most problematic, I can't tell exactly what order the app sees the options, as compared to what order they are actually in.I would be most greatful if anyone could help, as this is the only ... Well since the hard drive is the only real wear item, that would surely be suspect.    Does the hard drive make any strange sounds?    If you can get into Window and open a command prompt, you can check the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive by typing the command below and pressing enter.     You can also run that command from Safe Mode (command prompt)   wmic diskdrive get status It will return a status of each drive of OK, Bad, Caution or Unknown.    If is returns anything other than OK, then your drive may be bad. You might also try removing and re-seating the RAM modules by following the steps outlined on page 45 of the user manual linked below. Lenovo V470/V570/ B470/B570/B570e User Guide V2.0https://download.lenovo.com/UserFiles/UserGuide/en/User's%20guides%20and%20manuals/B570e/Lenovo%20V4... Note:   If you cannot get Windows to boot at all, and you have not backed up your data, you may want to have it looked at by a computer shop right away, because they can remove the drive, attempt to backup your data, and replace the hard drive if needed.   If the drive is failing, the more you use (or try to repair the system) the greater the chance the drive will fail completely. Best of luck,

I turned my Lenovo laptop on Friday to see the usual splash Lenovo on start up and then nothing else happened it kept continually doing that and going no further. Just so you know my laptop has no warranty left as I got it last Christmas second hand. I have been looking at demonstration videos on you tube and what I have tried so far is. I plugged in an external usb keyboard and got into bios and checked it was detecting my hard drive and it was. The next step I did was disconnect internal power/ battery and did the hold of the power button for 30 seconds to 1 minute  with the power cord connected only. And it was still doing the same. I then got advised to remove the cmos battery turn on laptop and then back off and put the battery back in. This has also failed to work so now I am looking for help here as I don't know what to do next and am hoping someone here has a different suggestion for me to try and hopefully get my laptop back up and running. Thank you in advance for any help given.

When I restarted my laptop, it showed me this:   Running startup repair always says "Startup Repair couldn't repair your PC". I have no idea what to do with this. My important files are in here, so it would be great if anyone could help me.

Do a system recovery or restore with the discs that came with PC make
And of course you had all your personal files backed up right?
if not pull the drive out and put it in another PC get them and then do the recovery.

Typing this on mobile device so have to be succinct.  Upon pressing power button: No backlight on monitor appears (monitor remains black) Fan remains running at normal speed Little lights indicating battery/power status of unit work normally removing/alternating ram has no effect on occasion when the laptop works, the slightest nudge will crash/power off system i know it sounds bad (motherboard damage maybe?) but any thoughts would be appreciated

The nudge & crash symptom is concerning.       Did the laptop get dropped or have anything happen to it that might lead you to believe the motherboard would be damaged, or result i the screen failing?     Do you have the ability to try connecting and external monitor to see if the system is actually booting?Does the position of the screen have any effect?    (I ask because there is a cable between the screen and base that can become damaged overtime, and perhaps could be shorting. Best of luck, Lenovo G400/G500/G405/ G505/G410/G510 Hardware Maintenance Manualhttps://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/lenovo_g400g500g405g505g410g510_hmm.pdf
