Solved: Bizarre screen resolution issue

Q: Solved: Bizarre screen resolution issue

Hello

I recently purchased a television set to use with my computer as the main monitor. When I plugged my PC in, the screen resolution was humourously low (720x480) whereas the native resolution for the set seems to be 1360x850. I have since changed the resolution by fiddling with the settings a bit, but I have a rather pressing issue on my hands: none of my games seem to respect the resolution.
For example, Star Wars Battlefront II (my favourite PC game, might I add) ran fine on my old monitor at 1024x768; however on this monitor it enters into a fuzzy resolution which pushes some of the menu off the bottom of the screen. It also won't allow me to change the resolution as the menu is completely blank.
Another example is Bit.Trip Runner which does have a working resolution changing menu but only goes up to 720x480. The same goes for Garry's Mod.

This kinda leaves me in a pickle as the computer was specifically built for lower-end gaming.
For the record, my graphics card is an ATI Radeon 5570 which has completely up-to-date drivers, and a seemingly unbranded "generic" television which also seems to have up-to-date drivers.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

When i connect my tv (19" Sansui LCD) to my laptop and select "Duplicate on both monitors" It works perfectly fine at 1366x768 resolution. When i select "Only show on 2" to turn my computer monitor off, it totally kills the resolution on my tv to something like 1024x768, and then stretches it to the wide screen. But i of course do not need 2 monitors running. How can i turn my laptop off without it killing my resolution?

Please note:
The monitor works perfectly while duplicated, it does not work while only on by itself. I do not see a reason why turning my computer monitor off should make the tv not work.

Thanks for help!

Nice one for the pure genius.......

Just changed from using a VGA cable to my monitor to HDMI. Nothing else is different. I am using an ASUS graphics card and all was well before. The only reason to changing to HDMI was length of cable.

Despite setting screen resolution to max, 1920 X 1080, as it was before, Windows displays on the screen with a black border round the outside, that is, not full screen.

At boot up the motherboard screen displays full screen, as does the 'starting Windows' page, but when it come to displaying anything thereafter it shows it smaller. Any ideas, guys?

What is the make of the Graphics Card, and does the card have a control center for adjusting graphics settings, like nVidia, and ATI?

If there is, open the graphics control program, and look for "Scaling Options" then adjust your display.

This has been going on for two days now, and it's a bit complicated. Hopefully I'll be able to explain this clearly enough that someone will be able to help me figure out what's going on.

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP1 on a computer that I built in Nov. of last year. I have had no problems with the internet until two days ago, when I noticed that some websites wouldn't load. I figured it was just a hiccup and ignored it, until the next day, when I couldn't get any sites to load in Firefox or IE. The really weird part? AIM still works just fine, 9 times out of 10. After some fiddling, I've gotten it to the point where if I refresh a page enough, I can get it to load. Sometimes I only have to refresh once or twice, sometimes (much more often) it's between 10 and 20 times. The other computer using the router in my apartment is working perfectly, no internet problems at all.

Here's what I've tried so far:
- Reset the router and modem.
- Check the physical cable connecting my computer to the router.
- Disable/enable the LAN connection.
- Reboot about 40 times.
- Run anti-virus and anti-virus software
- Disable/enable the firewall.
- Flush the dns cache in command prompt. This helped a little (cut down on the refresh times), but hasn't solved the problem at all.
- Deleted temporary internet files. This also helped, and got me to the best functionality I've had since this started-- about 60% of pages load on the first try... Read more

Hi all

I can provide the code if necessary, but this issue is really confusing me, and seems to be more to do with the differences between how excel 2007 saves files.

I have written a dozen macros in VBA (Excel 2003) and recently upgraded to 2007. When in run the macros
in 2007, they run fine.

HOWEVER - when someone who is still on Excel 2003 uses the files after me, they get error messages, even though the code was written for 2003, and is completely unchanged.

Compile Error : Cant Find Project or Library

the Debugger then highlights the following line of code

Dim currentDate as Date
currentDate = Date (the Date section is where I am getting the error)

That line of code works in Excel 2003, if the file has not been saved by Excel 2007.

Anyone have any ideas?

At this I am considering downgrading my Excel back to 2003 version.

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks & Regards
Patrick

What's the exact model number of your monitor?

I'm fairly certain however that you're being limited to 1024 x 768 (a common resolution for 17-inchers) because it's being read directly from the display; it's maximum reported resolution. The actual terminology begets me at the moment, but that's basically it.

Hi,

I just did a clean install of Vista Ultimate Edition 32-bit on my HP Pavillion zd7020us notebook but I can't select the proper resolution for my display (1440 by 900 pixels). The display adapter says "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter".

The video graphics are Nvidia GeForce FX Go5600, and when I try to install the Windows Vista 32-bit RTM driver from Nvidia.com I get an error message that says "The NVIDIA setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your hardware. Setup will now exit."

I have all of the updates installed, but the driver is still listed as "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" and I am not able to select 1440 x 900 as my screen resolution.

Can anyone tell me what I could do to set my screen to the proper resolution? Thanks!

Usually graphic drivers for laptops, are supplied only by the manufacturer, HP. Looking at your model, it looks like it wont support Vista at all, so there might not be any video drivers.

You could try this modified ones for vista: http://www.tweaksrus.com/index.php?option=com_docman&task=cat_view&gid=163&Itemid=41/

this is driving me nuts, i was used to all the icons being a certain size and its just bothering my apparent OCD that i cant get it back to that

the only thing i can think that might be an issue is that i just installed a manual switch. I use my monitor to play my xbox 360 in addition to just using it as a monitor, i bought a simple switch so that i didnt have to keep swapping out the cables every time i wanted to play, theres port a and b, computer is in a, xbox in b, and the other port connects the switch to my monitor

but, i was using the switch for about a week at the 1600-1200 res...no problems

So I just installed (successfully, thank god) my new Radeon 1950XT. All was well, I used the highest possible resolution for my tft-screen like I always do (1440x900), but here's the problem... Whenever I play a game now, the resolution keeps changing! For instance, if I use 1024x768 as the resolution for the game I'm playing, whenever I quit the game and get back to the windows desktop, the resolution is now the same as it was in the game. I have to manually enter Catalyst Control Center (cant do it via desktop properties because in there, the maximum resolution is whatever the game I was playing had) and set the resolution back to 1440x990. And whenever I play a game and exit it, it's the same thing all over again.

I'm kinda assuming its some sort of setting I havent found... I just dont know where to look anymore. Any help greatly appreciated!

UPDATE!
So now it seems that its not only after I quit a game or something, its after rebooting as well. It seems the default setting is ALWAYS 1024x768 and I cant change this in the standard Preferences via right-clicking the desktop, I HAVE TO change it in Catalyst Control Center. Also, a minute after rebooting and entering Windows, the screen flickers and first displays the desktop in 1440 for like a second, and then quickly changes back to 1024. Whats up with this?

My computer is in a very weird situation. About a week ago my VGA adapter broke and I needed to replace it with a new one. (My monitor is from 2009) With this new adapter I turned on my computer and my resolution is stuck at 1280x720. I used the NVIDIA control panel to make my resolution 1920x1080 and it worked, although when I start up a game it automatically goes to 1280x720 and it can't go any higher. I tried looking at my screen resolution in the control panel and it says 1024x768 is recommended!?!?! Also, when I look in the NVIDIA "change resolution" it seperates the 1920x1080 and the other resolutions so that 1920x1080 is categorized as hd/sd and the 1280x720, 1024x768 etc are categorized as PC and not hd/sd. It also says my native is 1024x768 now. Before the old adapter broke I could play games at 1920x1080 and had no problems. I have an Alienware X51.

Hi everyone,
I'm having some issues with my display screen.
My sister wanted to plug her laptop to the TV using an S-video cable and it somehow has caused my laptop's maximum screen resolution to 1024x768 (multiple monitor)....It's considerably smaller than my original max screen resolution. As well...It is very fuzzy and widely stretched on my laptop's screen, but looks normal on the TV.

After unplugging the cable and restarting the computer, I still cannot get out of the multiple monitor mode. And my screen is still fuzzy and stretched and ugly. This is bothering me quite a bit. Please if anyone can give me some pointers to restore my screen size back to what it was before plugging it into the TV would be greatly appreciated.

hi hasao,

I think your screen resolution has most probably changed. It generally happens automatically when you connect to a projector or a TV.

Changing the display settings of your computer might just help you. You can do that by right clicking on the desktop and then choosing display settings. There you can edit the resolution of your screen which best suits you ....

Hope it helps

I have a Windows 7 64-bit computer and a 22" LCD monitor. I downloaded updated AMD drivers. Now it recommends resolution of 1280 x 1024. However, when I accept that setting it creates a boxy image with a wife black stripe on each side (in other words, not filling the screen). The only setting that gives me a full screen image is 1280 x 800. However, that setting gives me oversized icons and text, even though the setting is "smaller - 100%."

Can someone suggest what to do to get the text in a little more manageable size?

Next it would really help if you posted ALL of your exact system specs; ie exact video card, exact monitor, etc.

I recently upgraded my motherboard to a GeForce6100PM-M2 64 x2 Dual Core Athlon with 4 GB DDR2 800. My screen is an LG 225WS which runs at 1680 x 1050 (native) resolution. My old motherboard had a Radeon 9700 which gave me 32 bit colour.

With my new motherboard installed when I set my screen to 32 bit colour any mouse or window movement causes the screen display to break up badly. I have installed the latest drivers from NVIDIA and LG. I first contacted NVIDIA who said if I have their latest drivers it must be an LG problem. LG told me that as long as I have their latest driver, the plug and play monitor should function correctly and it must be a graphics card problem.

Grateful for some advice to solve this issue.

We recently purchased a Dell GX270 running Windows XP Professional.

We were hoping to replace our Sony VIAO as a music and ITunes server in our entertainment center.

We have a dennon reciever which brings in HDMI (converted from a DVI output in the video card) and send it to our sony Flat Screen TV

Previously we could run multiple resolutions and screen rates with no difficulty.

When we installed the Radeon 9200 video card, with DVI output, the card was operating great in "plug and play mode" on a regular computer monitor (flat screen)

when we moved the GX270 to the TV, it would only display 720 x 480 screen resolution....

we are not sure how to correct this and have the other resolutions...

Hypothesis 1: change driver from "plug and play" to "default" monitor... we dont see an option for this. we have deleted the previous montors from the configuration and letting it reinstall....

Hypothesis 2: hook up a primary monitor on our video card and the dvi as a secondary monitor.. then make changes using the primary monitor (Computer monitor....) and then switch which monitor is "primary"

Hypothesis 3: there is some known driver issue, etc... and we can get it fixed!

We looked on the web quite a bit, and found something similar in these forums... but... not sure.... http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/491054-dual-monitor-nightmare.html

Here's the problem:

I was using my computer when my mother accidentally hit the room switch which turns my entire rig off. Annoyed, I turn my computer back on and now my screen resolution is all messed up. On top of that I can't open Chrome due to misplaced files.

I reinstalled all my drivers but instead of detecting the name of my monitor, it just shows Generic PnP Monitor instead.
I pick the best screen res(1600 x 1200) but that is clearly wrong(but the best i can do).

I've done a system restore and reinstalled all my drivers. I looked for the Acer X223W drivers but all I got was a security catalog, setup information, and an ICC profile that doesn't do anything when I run it. I searched for driver updates on device manager but it says the Generic PnP monitor driver is up to date.

My fear is that this is truly a hardware problem from the light switch, and nothing but a new monitor will fix. Anyone care to dig into this one?

Cheers

Try uninstalling the monitor and then reboot. Acer was no help, seeing that they apparently didn't bother after they got past the 32-bit Vista driver.

HI,

I've plugged my laptop into an HP LA2306x 24inc monitor. Max resolution for monitor is 1920x1080 60hz. I've changed the settings on the laptop to connect to projector and set up the resolution as 1920x1080. Images are perfect but I cant centralise the screen. I can just see the top of the toolbar and there is 1cm to spare at the top of the screen.

I have tried all the monitor settings and taken a look at the graphics card settings. Am very confused. Can anyone help?

Ive attached a picture showing the cursor/pointer at the top of the screen to indicate the gap.

Thanks a lot.

What graphics card do you have? sometimes you have to "upscale it" with your software suite.

Hello, please help.

I have a laptop Dell Studio connected to Hitachi HDTV. The problem is that since at least 2 weeks ago when I connect the TV as a projector I am not being able to use the full recommended resolution wich is 1920x1080 because it won't fit my TV screen as it used to do.

Can you help figure out what is the exact problem now?

hey Quinn, welcome to the forums. could you check the graphic card version on your unit and compare it to the version available on http://support.lenovo.com .is it the same or is the one on the support site ? If both of it is the same, uninstall the graphic driver from your unit and then download the driver from our support site.do not install it yet, set your unit to diagnostic mode via msconfig first and then only install.

hi,

I recently upgraded to windows10 from win7. post upgrade I am facing issues related to display. 1600X1200 mode is available, but it cuts a portion of the screen. 1400X1250 works fine, but unable to utilize the whole screen-space. here is what i tried:
1) upgrade drivers
outcome: unable to get drivers changed from Microsoft basic display adapter after uninstalling the Microsoft basic display adapter in device manager.
unable to change or update dell drivers downloaded from dell.com (R68954)
Trued reinstalling nvidia drives. failed
I am using a Asus A7V(MB). unable to install from MB drives as they are pretty old ones.
logged on to Asus account and updated the VIA AGP Driver for Win9x/2000 andVIA AGP Driver v4.03 for Win9x and Win2000.
All working fine. Display 1600X1200 without any cut...
you can try if required for Dell 2001fp monitors...

after many issues lve finally got the system up and running.

lm using the same gfx card as l used to the Radeon 4650 HD after installing the cards drivers it seems to cause issues where the monitor gives me an "unsupported" resolution error when on my previous setup said card had no trouble going to 1350*768 (cant seem to go above 1024*768 without having to roll back drivers)

just another note l didnt add, it seems my monitor isnt being picked up as "plug and play" but some generic monitor.

A:[SOLVED] resolution issue

Hi,
If you havn't got the option of vga mode and safemode (that shouldn't load the drivers) also fails you can go into the recovery console and edit the boot.ini adding /BASEVIDEO to the line of your normal os making it look somthing like this

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn /usepmtimer /basevideo

this should stop your machine loading video drivers and use standard 640x480 16-color VGA mode
the file is usually found in the root of c and hidden
always make a backup of any system file you edit in this way

OK, i recently bought Vista Ultimate Edition but my monitor will not display in a resolution higher than 640x480.

My system specs that i feel matter are:

Nvidia 7800GT 256mb graphics card
Digimate 17inch J7100 LCD monitor

The same issue happened on XP but i was able to go to my monitor on device manager, go to properties, select update driver, browse my computer for driver, and then pick from a list of drivers and deselect show only compatiable hardware. I would then look for a monitor with the same specs as mine such as max resolution and max refresh rate and select that monitor. I was then able to increase the resolution but this has not worked on vista. I still get this in display properties...(see attachment)

I've installed the Nvidia beta driver for vista and had a look in the nvidia control panel but still cannot get a resolution higher than 640x480.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

I just bought an HP Pavillion dv6-7014nr and I love it! Except for one thing. I upgraded to the 1920x1080 screen to get the HD quality and the matte display. Everything on this screen is so tiny, its uncomfortable to read. I have increased the text size in windows to 130% dpi and I have downloaded and extension in Firefox to keep the zoom level I like. My problem is that with this increased DPI setting, the text in programs, such as iTunes gets cut off or overlaps. I was just wondering if there was a solution to this problem, or is it just something I have to live with?
Thanks very much!

Dan

A:[SOLVED] 1920x1080 screen resolution on a 15.6" Laptop Screen

1920x1080 doesn't suit everyone on a 15.6" screen as it's really more suited to large-screen external monitors (20" or more). It's big plus of course is that it gives you much more screen space to use for multi-tasking or using apps which have many palettes (like Photoshop). Personally I think 1920x1080 is way too high for the average laptop screen size unless you've got perfect eyesight.

If you don't need all that space, you may find that setting a lower resolution (and changing DPI & zoom levels back to their defaults) is more in line with what your eyesight can deal with. It probably won't look as pin-sharp as the native 1920x1080 resolution though, but at least you shouldn't get some app Windows extending beyond the screen edges.

Suddenly I have a white background and low desktop resolution on my Asus laptop. Right clicking the desktop to check the resolution shows the correct 768x12xx figure but the screen display is not that. The appearance of all programs is unaffected--the screen resolution looks like it always has--only the desktop has the problem: white background and larger than normal icons with difficult to read labels. The only change I made was to install Genie Timeline Pro 2.1 backup. Everything seems to work ok. Does anyone know how I can get back to a normal desktop? TIA, njb P.s. I've tried System Restore with no luck--it gives an error message.

A:[SOLVED] Weird desktop resolution issue

Hello Leica69,

Your system specification says that you're running Windows XP, yet you posted in the Windows Vista/7 forum. Are you in fact on a 7/vista system?

Either way I would recommend you to firstly Uninstall your current display driver and reboot the machine, and then download the latest one from your manufacturers website and install that.

Please get back to us with your system specifications if the above doesn't help.

I've been having an issue ever since I updated the drivers for the first time on my hd radeon 3870 crossfire cards(round the end of august 2008). The resolution would not go above 800x600 unless I disabled/enabled crossfire (causing the cards to reset) in catalyst. now recently I got rid of my second card because the heat sink was covering a PCI slot that I wanted for a internal wireless adaptor. the resolution is doing It's usual freezing only now, theres no option to disable or reenable crossfire! any ideas?

What has been tried:
Updating drivers
Reinstalling catalyst
Uninstalling and reinstalling drivers and catalyst
Googling the issue (useless ;_; )

This problem means that I am unable to play any games as the resolution switches back. does anybody have a fix for this issue? or even a way of forcing the cards to restart? thanks a bunch.

EDIT: problem solved! after hours and hours of tinkering and testing I finally found out that "force tv detect" needed to be enabled in catalyst. anybody with catalyst should make a note because that had me stumped 0.o
