Preferred Solution: missing files/deleted files????????

I recommend downloading and running DRP. It's a recovery tool that has been proven to recover files that most other programs have no luck with. I've even recovered files from freshly formatted or partitioned drives.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/v51TwD. (This link will automatically start a download of DRP that you can save to your computer.)

A: missing files/deleted files????????

Okay, I am assuming that you can login to windows just fine so...

1. Start Menu
2. Run
3. Type in: sfc /scannow
4. System will check for corrupted/ missing files. It will prompt you to insert your XP install cd if a file is missing.
5. It will take a while to run, but it whould be worth it :)

I know this might sound silly, but I have a usb 256mb pen drive and I accidently deleted a file which I then couldnt find anywhere. Not in the recycle bin (win xp pro). I thought there may be a hidden recycle bin on the pen drive so I selected the show all files option in explorer which did not help at all.

Hoping that someone else has an idea

Thanks in advance

A:USB pen drive missing deleted files

You have to use some file recovery software. Your USB drive is probably in FAT32 format so undeletion should be easy. Just make sure you don't write anything on the stick - better use the write protection switch right now.

I assume that you've already checked to make sure they are not in the Recyle bin. You could try a Data Recovery program. I've used Recuva and Recuva Portable. Remember that every write to the hard drive is potentially over-writing the deleted files.

Does this mean I have something on my computer that automatically deletes these files?Click to expand...

I do not know. I have a batch file that runs at startup that deletes the contents of %temp%, but I do not think there is a Windows feature to do that automatically.

I'm wondering why you copied/moved them to a temp folder, and why you left them there.

I have a 1T WD Black with 2 partitions. The 1st partition is C: 120G, running XP Pro SP3, approx 17G used, NTFS, free space listed 9G. The adjacent partition D: is empty. Free space listed 88G. (Paragon Partition Manager correctly lists the free space.)

I went looking for hidden files with TreeSize, and on D: I found tracking.log in System Volume Information. I have system restore turned off (I use EAZ Fix). In TreeSize, tracking.log was listed as 20KB, but found out it was taking up over 800G of space. I changed the permissions, accessed the folder, and deleted tracking.log, but it just kept coming back.

I tried chkdsk/f many times on D: (C: was okay) but would never complete step 5. Ran WD?s diagnostics which came out okay. Re-formatted D: many times (quick and regular, in windows, cmd prompt, and Paragon), still no luck.

I wiped the Recycler folder and a strange thing happened. After I wiped, I checked the SVI folder for tracking.log (it came back-deleted again). Went back to the Recycler folder and 3 new files showed up-DK2.ini, INFO2, DK3 (no extensions on these files).

Opened the DK2.ini file and this is what was written:

Wiped all the files, then INFO2 reappeared, and DK4, DK5 files showed up..

In safe mode I ran a virus scan with Eset Smart Security, and MalwareBytes which found nothing significant.

Then last week I was re-formatting once again, when the computer crashed. After it booted u... Read more

Hello, I have done one of the stupidest things in the world and have been trying all day to recover my files that went missing.  Here's what happened:
I deleted a bunch of registry entries because Spybot S&D always showed these five things as threat level 5 and can't clean them.  I decided to search the registry for the string of numbers and letters that S&D referred to and deleted all of the ones it would let me delete.
I also deleted all of the files and folders in the location Users/HomeAppData/Local/Temp except the one file it wouldn't let me.
When I came back to Windows nothing was working so I rebooted.  When I rebooted all of my programs, files, everything was gone.  I did a system restore to the most recent point which was from a week ago which turned everything back to normal except some very important files are missing from a folder on my desktop.
I am a musician and have been working on a recording which I save as I go as multiple versions ex. song 1.1, song 1.2, etc.  All of the versions that were created after the available system restore date are gone.  But it's weird because the bounces that I did (wav files not pro tools files) from the later versions are there, just not their pro tools session file counter parts.
I've restored all of the files/folders to Users/HomeAppData/Local/Temp however that didn't change anything.
The pro tools files that went missing are not hidden, I can't see them when I show hidden files.  I... Read more

I've got a situation here whereby .TMP files are appearing in network directories, and the files are going missing. The size of the TMP file matches the original file.
I'm trying to narrow down the issue, because I think there may be two problems here.
1. Offline Files are enabled, to allow profile redirection.    It seems that this is also by default, is allowing Clinet Side Caching when there are network issues.  Does the original file (.doc for example)  get renamed
as a HR234.TMP for example when the Slow link detection sees slow performance?
2.  If the above TMP file is created when there are network issues, should this resolve itself (sync itself back to the network) when performance improves?
Currently we are in a situation where we have a department that have files missing from many network shares, all the missing files seemlingly replaced with a .TMP file, so do we have to go round to every machine in the department, and manually
sync them to resolve this?

Windows 8.1
Started a new account, with admin privileges. Deleted old account also with admin privileges. Selected the "KEEP FILES" option. Deleted account. A folder pops up in desktop, with the computer's name. Under that folder there was another folder with old user name, and under that folder there was yet another folder also with old user name. Completely empty.
I don't have a restore point to which to retrieve my files. The c:\ disk says there is 600GBs of free space, previously I had only 300. All the library from my old user account have been wiped. I also checked Recycle Bin which is empty. The current account has admin privileges and is set to show hidden files. I was told that it might be under c:\Users. I checked that with CMD and two folders were titled "." and "..", they don't show under file explorer.

I am running Recuva right now, but from what I understand that won't be able to restore file names and fragmented files, which are both critical. I also had an encrypted file with a none standard extension which might be ignored by Recuva.

Hello Abe, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I'm not sure what went wrong, but this is a perfect example of why you should always back up anything that you do not want to lose first to be safe.

I hope Recuva may be able to recover your files for you.

Hi there,

Sorry if this is in the wrong section!

I recently got a new additional desktop at office that has Windows 7 Professional loaded on it. I use my laptop as the primary computer, but need to start using the desktop for other routine activities.

I need to run a vbs/exe file in the background, as soon as the Windows loads up. I copied few files and everything works well. I had saved the program along with the vbs & exe file in 'C:/Program Files/New Doc' (no specific reason). But when I restart my desktop, all the files get deleted. I was reading online about this and I figured, this could be because Windows 7 is booting on the network? I am not sure, but that explains why all the files I download get wiped/deleted on the next restart.

I was wondering if you can help me out in three things:

1) Can you confirm if Network Boot is the reason why files are getting deleted?

2) Assuming Win 7 is working on Network boot, is there a folder/location where in which, the file I save are not deleted in the next restart?

3) My main concern is that, I need to run this VBS/Exe file on Windows startup, but because all the files get deleted on start up, I can't put the file in the Startup folder or use the Task Scheduler or Group Policy to get this file working on Startup.

Thanks a lot in advance. Any help is appreciated!

A:Files get deleted with Network Boot (Need autostart of files)

It sounds like you may have Time Freeze, Returnil, or some other "sandbox" software running that uses the Shadow Service to divert downloads and file copies to a cache rather than the actual disk drive folder. When the system is booted the cache is discarded. Files all gone.

Try downloading and running AutoRuns and look for these programs. If you don't see any I mentioned then you may have to search on any you don't recognize.

Hi, I used Puran to recover some deleted files from my external hard drive and when I open some of the files I get the following message:
"This document could not be registered . It will not be possible to create links from other documents to this document."
The documents still fully open and they look like they are all there. Also, when I look at the properties of some of the folders they say there is 0 bytes in them. I did the recovery twice, once selectively with only the files that I thought I needed such as .doc and .pdf, and again with everything including files such as .cab . chm .dwg .hlp .mdf. Two identical recovered folders from each recovery say they have a different amount of data in them.
My question is: are there supporting files that need to be recovered along with the .doc and .pdf files to fix the issues and to make sure i have recovered everything, such as the .cab .chm etc?  I didnt the extra files were necessary but on further research they might be files needed by word. Are they only needed for the program and not individual files?
Thanks for the help!

I already searched through alot of threads but could not find anyone having the exact same issue.
We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with SP1 which is hosting a DFS Namespace.
A customer of us works with his notebook (Win 7 SP 1) and has enabled Offline Files for his personal folder
in the DFS path. The initial synchronisation seemed to work and no sync errors are reported in Sync Center.

Now the problem is, everytime he opens a document from his DFS path and saves it, a .tmp file gets
created there and doesnt disappear. Not even after reboot. As far as i know it happens with Word, Excel and PDF documents.

If I log on to the server and browse to his path, i cannot see those .tmp files, only he can see it.
If I try to delete those files from his notebook I get an error "File is no longer located in... Verify the item´s location and try again".
What I have tried so far:
If Offline Files get disabled, those .tmp files disappear. On activating they are visible again.
Tried "Delete temporary files" from Sync Center -> Manage Offline Files -> Disk Usage. Nothing happened.
I tried to repair Office, didn´t help.
The only Group Policy Settings we have relating to Offline Files are "Synchronize all offline files before logging off"
and "Allow or Disallow use of the Offline Files Feature" which is enabled.

Would be nice if someone can get me into the right direction to fix this issue.

Thanksfully I could see GMER scanning all of these missing files so it looks like they are just hidden. I am not taking any action to recover these as I know how that can cause other virus issues so I am just waiting for help.

I have been trying to encrypt a folder using PGP 9.0.6 and Cryptainer Secure It 3.1.7.

What's weird is that the folder and the files within it will not encrypt and I don't know why? Further more the folder will actually be missing files. Can anybody explain to me? No, I am not setting the applications to erase files after completion.

PGP Conventional Encryption has worked finally. I tried all the obvious stuff first like closing all non-essential volumes (virtual disk that are created and encrypted by PGP), transferring the files to another drive, etc.

On a slightly separate issue. I did have some data corruption involving an older and separate group of files. However I deemed that to a hardware failure or a OS/Software failure. Figured it might provide valid insight.

Update: Now my PGP conventional encryption, non .exe file generation worked. I don't understand why it wouldn't work? Going to rename the source folder and try again. MY encrypted .exe file generation with PGP should work.

I tried again. PGP conventional encryption and PGP Zip both encrypted fine. I tried creating a PGP .exe file and again it failed and files are missing; why?

I've done a full virus scan and spyware scan. No known threats detected that would cause this. I've done two system wipes in the past months. I've also removed, reinstalled, and or repaired the installation of both a... Read more

I've had this computer (HP Pavilion dv2000)for about 4 years and despite my best efforts it's started to get a little bogged down.. SO a while ago I used some free registry cleaning software (Eusing Registry Cleaner, Window Registry Repair & Registry Repair Wizard 2011) to try to get rid of clutter on my lap top in hopes that it would run a little better. I know, I know, let me save everyone the time of telling how stupid it was to do this when I don't know that much about computers! SO as you can imagine after my little cleaning spree I started having some weird problems but mostly related to Internet Explorer. I tried to undo whatever I did but nothing worked. I actually had to stop using IE all together because I kept getting errors and couldn't get to some websites at all. It seemed to be a security setting issue but no matter what changes I made nothing would fix it. So I switched to Firefox which has been a lot better but not perfect. So now its pretty obvious that my computer is missing some files? .... drivers? ....something because I am basically unable to execute most setup files that I download and my Norton anti-virus seems to not be able to run its periodic scans correctly. Lately the computer seems to be worse, buggy, slow, freezes up and I suspect that there is a virus somewhere but no virus scan, adware scan, etc. that I've been able to run (Spy Bot, Bit Defender) finds anything and I'm to afraid to even look at the registry now... A friend of mine asked me to take a look at his PC, it's a HP Pavilion a1510n, running XP Media Center Edition. He has lost hundreds of files and in the folders where the files were is this small file called AXEL.DAV, there are over 2000 of the files in just about every folder on the pc. I have run Ad-Aware but it didn't seem to find anything. I have attached a HJT log. Any help would be appreciated.

Unwanted encoding messages on opening MSWord files. Inability to open MSExcel files and picture files. Apparently corrupted files?I am having problems opening .doc and .xls and .jpg files in some (but not all) folders in my folder tree, e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\My Documents\Folder X. However, Folders Y and Z are apparently unaffected. This has arisen only recently. My system is Windows XP (Home), and SP2 upgraded to SP3.MSWORD EXAMPLE:- On opening a Word file (whether from Word or from Windows Explorer) I receive this dialog box;"File Conversion - (filename).doc""Select the encoding that makes your document readable." The already selected button is "Other encoding" and the suggested code is "Japanese". The preview pane shows only an array of characters, all the same.On trying to select the button "Windows (Default)", the preview changes to a continuous array of lower-case xxxxxxx. On returning to the "Other encoding" option and trying "Auto-Select", the selected code returns itself to "Japanese" with the display as already noted above. On returning to the "Other encoding" option and trying "Western European (Windows)", the display reverts to the Windows Default style as already noted above, lines of xxxxxxx. Hello friends,

I am in a bit of a bind. I simply clicked the "show hidden files" option on my C:/Users folder. Inside of 20 seconds, my libraries are all rearranged and none of my files are where I put them originally. They have seemingly vanished.

I downloaded ShadowExplorer and thankfully confirmed that I can still open my files when I refer back to an earlier restore point within the program, but when I go to restore the files, they don't go back to where I send them. I don't know where my files are, nor how to access them outside of this ShadowExplorer program.

I did try a regular 'ol Windows system restore, but those don't affect files, so the problem remains. Anyone have any idea what the hell I did and how I might go about fixing it?

Thank you immensely for your consideration.

A:Show hidden files --> Files now missing

Hello Snapdragon, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you have not already, see if checking the "don't show hidden files" option will revert them back to how you had them before.

Double check the libraries to make sure that the folders you had included in them are still included.

In addition, see if setting each library to View -> "Sort by -> Name", "Group by -> (None)", and "Arrange by -> Folder" may reveal them.File and Folder Arrangement - Group by - Sort by - Arrange by
Hope this helps for now,

Can someone review my HJT log? I did a scan to see if I could find anything suspicious because my computer has recently been a bit laggy and I can't figure out why. I keep it clean with AdAware, Symantec Professional, Spybot, RegClean, and I also defrag at least once a week or every 2 wks. So I am at a stand-still on why it's laggin, therefore I ran a HJT scan and came up with the following "missing files":

dimsntfy.dll (Winlogon Notify entry) (which I manually searched and found it in System32 and ServicePackFiles\i386 folders even though it said it was missing)

jqs.exe (Java Quick Starter Service entry) This is a new service since the latest java update that seems to run continuously in my processes even though I read online that it was only supposed to run during bootup, then stop. I found this file also in Program Files\Java\jre6\bin.

Can someone review my HJT log and tell me if i can click the "fix checked" button to remove these entries without causing any problems? Thanks.

First off I am not at the programs own forum cos I cant recall either my pword or username so cant login or re-register. Secondly, you guys here will give me an unbiased opinion. I use a freeware version of a well-known file erase program. I have used it for years and thought I was safe. However, needing to recover accidentally deleted (not erased) files I used the recovery program from the same company. As well as the deleted files it turned up a whole load (all? I dont know, there were hundreds) of files that I had intentionally erased. including 7-pass and 35-pass erasures. At first my reaction was - "this program does not work as advertised", then "hmm, it it because of the way I am doing it?" When I have files to erase I move them to a temp folder and when convenient run the program. Does this mean that I am somehow creating a copy which stays in some archive or memory and it is these that are being recovered? Another odd thing: Using the file recovery tool I have "recovered" files that were never even deleted - but they were opened in grafix programs and altered, but NEVER deleted. Do these programs create their own library of used files and then "delete" them when the program or the pc is shut down? If I overwrite empty drive space with any old rubbish will that "sanitize" the drive? Thank you.

I would very much appreciate some help finding my missing files and folders if possible.

I am running windows Vista version 6.0, service pack 2.

I started windows, and noticed that 5 of my desktop folders were missing, and all of the files contained within. A search for document and folder names returned nothing (even with advanced search options). One of the missing folders was called "term 1". I created a new folder, and tried to change the name to term 1. A pop-up told me that this destination (desktop) already contained a folder named "term 1"- did I want to merge these folders? I was confused, because I could no longer see the original term 1 folder. I clicked "yes" hoping that a merge would result in a visible term 1 folder, but now the new folder also disappeared. After some intensive searching, I could not find any of the folders/files that were missing. Some other folders/files were still visible on my desktop though.

I restored my computer to a previous checkpoint (from 2 days ago, after a windows update). After reboot, I received a message that the restore was unsuccessful. At this point, all of my desktop folders and files were gone, aside from windows default desktop icons. A search returned no results. I remembered that restore can fail because of an AV program, so I disabled Norton. I tried to undo the restore, which was successful, but no files/folders returned. I then tried to do a restore to a checkpoint from befor... Read more

I apologize in advance for posting this twice. I think I may have put it originally in the wrong area.

I had terrible problems with spyware and some trojans. I received much help here and fixed that right up. No problems with that now but I still have some issues that haven't been corrected and I don't have a windows XP CD. It didn't come with my computer and I never bought one. Here's the problems I've noticed just so far......

1) No search option under start, search. Nothing shows but a blank box and the dog. I have no way to do a search for files or to choose options for a search.

2) In my control panel, when I click on both IE troubleshooting link and Network Diagnostics link does nothing.

3) I have no system restore. When I click on it, it does nothing.

4) I switched to Firefox as my browser since I encountered all of the problems with trojans, etc. so I can't get windows updates unless I use IE. When I click on IE and go to tools, windows update, I get a blank page. Nothing on it. It's the same way if I go directly to the microsoft homepage and try it from there. Blank page again.

5) No way to use windows media player. Apparently I downloaded something with my current version and now it's disabled and had to be uninstalled. I installed a new version but after the set up, I received an error message and it closes right up. I don't even have time to write down what it says.

Now, the programs I have downloaded to fix my problems with ads and trojans or... Read more

did you receive any restore disks with the computer as you can make an xp disk from the restore disk
some comps you have to make your restore disks from the computer yourself, from what i have read
is there a sticker on the back or the side of the computer with the xp serial on it
borrow a copy of xp and in the run box type
sfc /scannow
and press enter
if it finds anything wrong with the system files it will ask for the xp disk to repair them

Could not be repaired and told to contact my support team. A memory test allowed me to login to windows. How ever nothing would open. Start menu would work but no applications would start. The Hard drive said it was in a bad state.
I installed Linix Mint and managed to recover all needed files. I then tried to reinstall windows. Both CD's stop at expanding files 0% then errors can not be installed. Files missing. I have seen on the web in might be todo with the speed i recored the image iso at???
I then fired up a linix live cd and deleted the old windows and linix partition with gParted. Now not even Linux will install. If i allow the laptop to boot it will come up grub recovery(linuxs recovery).
seems i cant do any thing now. Have i not partioned the HDD right?
any ideas and thanks

The Hard drive said it was in a bad state.
What reported the hdd to be in a bad state?
Most all hdd manufacturer's have diagnostic tools which you can download as an ISO file, you then can burn this to a CD and boot from it to run the diagnostic test.  If you will pull the hdd out and post the manufacturer I will post a link to a site where you can download the file.

Ok so my friends computer has three files sitting in a "ready to be burned" folder on the cd-rw drive. However if you try to delete these three files it says that it "cannot read from the source file or disc."

I tried uninstalling the cd drive but when i reinstalled it the files were still waiting to be burned.

It is Win XP Home.

My Mom has Windows XP on an IBM think pad. It has one administrative account (hers) and two other accounts (members of the family. I have my own laptop). When she logged on yesterday, all of her files in My Documents, My Pictures, and My Music were missing as well as the Favorites in her Internet Explorer and her background was also changed back to the Windows default. I was able to recover some by going into the C drive and getting it that way. However when I transfered those files to a flash drive, she noted that many files were deleted. She also got a couple of messages that there was plenty that were missing and that could not be recovered. She made another log in name with administrative options and when she logged off of her first log in name, she was unable to log back on. The files, favorites, and background are STILL available on the other accounts. Only hers seemed to be affected.

What's going on here? Norton said that there were no viruses that could be detected

A:Deleted Files

That could be a corrupted user account ( but not definitely ) You need to run a chkdsk first, then If you have the installation disk the sfc. to do the first if you dont know how, go to the start menu, start>run>cmd  then hit ok, in the command prompt type "chkdsk/r" without the brackets. that will tell you that it cant run the chkdsk and ask you if you want to schedule it for the next restart, type y for yes then reboot. afterit gets through ( it will take a while but dont interrupt it) then go back to the start menu start>run>cmd and type in "sfc/scannow" again without the brackets. You should run these two first but afterward you can see if theres anything in the other profile that can be recovered by transfering everthing from it to the one that you just created. to do that in windows explorer you first need to go to the folder options in the control panel and on the view tab check "show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide Protected Operating system files" . You'll get a warning from the second one, but just click ok. after that with windows explorer go to the Documents and settings folder and look for the folder with her user name that shes having problems with. In that folder hold down the CTRL key while you click on every file and folder in there EXCEPT  Ntuser.dat,  Ntuser.dat.log,  and Ntuser.ini . then right click on one of them and choose "copy" then navigate the the new folder that you creat...
