Winows Update errors 0x80073712 & 0x80070002

Q: Winows Update errors 0x80073712 & 0x80070002

The latest patches fail to install and I have gone through the threads to try and correct the problem with recommended actions but the problem still persists.

I've attached the required files and successfully complete the SURT and SFC actions without errors as per the Windows Update Posting Instructions .
I've also included the ever useful event log entries as well. Can anyone help?

FDISK could be my next option...but I prefer the learn rather than surrender.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Winows Update errors 0x80073712 & 0x80070002

You have almost 200 missing files according to the CheckSUR report - but none, according to the SFC report.
This indicates some major mismatch between the registry and the file system.

A repair install is your best and quickest repair option.

I have Win7 SP1 64 bit. Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320 fails to install and now I can't get any Windows updates. I can install other updates if I download the standalone update files from Microsoft's website, just not the Update Agent.

When Windows Update tries to update to the WU Agent 7.6.7600.320 I get the 800F081F error.

I downloaded the standalone update file (from Update to Microsoft Update client) and tried to install it, and I got the 0x80070002 error.

I have used both admin account and my regular account while attempting the install.
What I have tried so far:

- sfc /scannow - found no errors
- installed Windows Update Readiness Tool (May 2014)
- Microsoft Fixit
- Windows Update Diagnostic
- checked my computer with 3 different virus/malware scanners (not at the same time, and only one of them
is for real time scanning, the two others are on an usb stick just for on demand scanning) and nothing was found
- even tried to change DNS on to and and still no go
- renamed the "Software Distribution folder" so a new one was created
- tried the install with clean boot, but nothing
- instructions from Windows Update error 80070002 - Windows Help didn't help either
Any help with this would be much appreciated. Attachment 332188.

Line 46368: 2014-09-01 16:15:00, Info CBS Calling client to resolve source, cannot find file 'wuaueng.dll.mui' at path: \\?\C:\Windows\Servicing\Packages\amd64_microsoft-windows-w..ient-core.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_7.6.7600.256_cs-cz_e813361d9f3045df\wuaueng.dll.mui
Why this isn't found by SFC I'm not sure - unless you're using a hack to have multiple languages installed in a Home Premium machine. Technically, that file shouldn't be there anyhow, so I don't understand why Windows is looking there in the first place.

Let's have a bit of a look at the system in a more general way...
Please follow the instructions here Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions - but just post the resulting file here in your reply.

Im hoping someone here has some ideas or suggestions on how to help me. I just bought Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific for my pc and it will not install and run. 1st of all: my pc should be able to run it as it meets the spec requirements on the box. My pc specs are: Dell E310 Pent 4ht 2.80ghz, 2 gigs ram, 160 gb hd and a Geforce 6200 video card. My system is obviously not even close to a powerhouse but I can run Flight sim x ok with lower settings. Also the video card is a pci bus because unfortunatley my system dosent have a pci express slot. The game requirements does say the geforce 6200 IS a supported card. One other thing is the instructions do state the because of technology in the disc designed to prevent copying there is a chance it may conflict with some disc and virtual drives. Maybe this is the problem, I am not sure how to check that out. Ok so here is what happens when I try to install the game: It loads normally, abeit slowly, and then when it is just about finished there is a windows error indicating "Directx setup has encountered a problem and needs to close.(you have the option of loading directx however I am pretty sure I already have the latest version, so I didnt choose the let the disc download it on previous tries) After clicking "dont send error to microsoft" I get the same error, but this time it is for Setup Launcher. Once again after clicking and not sending the error report to microsoft I get the final windows error, this time for... Read more

I am having the exact same problems as the people who opened these threads:
csi unable to query store version
CSI Unable to Query Store Version Total count: 1

I have windows 7 Home 64bit

Things that have failed:
- Check For Updates always fails with the error code: 80073712
- sfc /scannow produces "windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation"
- turn windows features on or off produces an empty window.
- system update readiness tool produces 1 error "csi unable to query store version"
- Installation of SP1 fails with: ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT(0x80073712)

I also did a remote session with a real microsoft tech and after trying a few things, they just tried to get me to buy their $149 "advanced tools" garbage.

- CBS FOLDER ZIPPED (includes CBS.log and CheckSUR.log)
- WindowsUpdate.log
- FILE: C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS
I really appreciate any help!

A:Update Error 80073712 - ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT(0x80073712)

Looks like bad news, I'm afraid...

Checking Packages
(f) CSI Unable to Query Store Version 0x00000002
64-bit Windows usually has a COMPONENTS hive of 38-60MB - and yours is only 28MB
Opening the file in a Hex editor, it's obvious that something has totally corrupted it - it appears to be an extract from a CBS.log file!

Unless you have a System Restore point that's from before the problem started, then I'm afraid that your only options are either a repair install or a clean install.

Good afternoon! From what I've seen in a Whole Lot of Googling, this forum seems to have the most targeted, successful support for the kind of issue I'm seeing.

I've been running Win7 Home Premium for a few years, and every single Windows Update has run successfully (with a snag now and then) except SP1, which returns error 0x80073712 every time.

I've disabled SpyBot S&D and AVG Free, but MS Security Essentials is still running.

I ran SURT (Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64), which completed.
(And I discovered I've been attempting to resolve the issue with SURT since September 2012, v22!)

Ran SFC scan as Admin:

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Collected CBS.zip from C:\Windows\Logs

Attempted update again.

New error code: 80070002. Followed WinHelp to stop Windows Update service, deleted temporary update files, restarted update service, checked again for updates.

Attempted update again. Found 1 critical (SP1) and 2 optional. Didn't note what they were.

Cancelled install during Win Live Essentials 2011 update. Restarted SP1-only update.

80073712 returned.

Re-collected CBS.zip from C:\Windows\Logs

(I tried to attach CBS.zip, but at ~30MB, it's well over the 8MB limit. Any particular logs you could use instead?

The checksur.log shows several errors (cbs.zip)

sfc /scannow shows one error with wimgapi.dll (hashmismatch) which cannot repaired, because source file is also corrupted (sfcdetails.txt).

lossless repairing with the Win repair system isn't possible, because user-, program- and windows-folders are not in the same partition.

Hey all, I have a lenovo tower running windows 7 home premium service pack 1, all seems to be working great except when I go to do updates, every update is installed except this one nagging one that fails repeatedly.

The Update is Security Update KB2847927 and the error code is 0x80073712

When the update didn't install I hit help that took me to this page
Windows Update error 0x80073712

I ran the System File Checker tool as administrator in cmd prompt sfc /scannow when it finished it said Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
I tried again to install the update but it failed.

The next step was to download and install the System Update Readiness tool, installed that, said finished after about 5 mins (read that it appears to hang but just let it go) and yeah it seemed to install but after that the update still won't install fails with same error code.

That's where the microsoft page stops in terms of what to check or do, so now I come to the group hoping to find some answers.

I read the page that showed the steps to reporting about an error and have attempted to attach my cbs.zip file but it keeps saying
500 - Internal server error.
I am supposed to be attaching the entire cbs folder saved as a zip then uploading that cbs.zip correct?
It's showing as 27.3MB is that too big? For me everytime I try to upload that zip file I just get that server error, I will try again after I post the thread if there is anything else I am missing detail w... Read more

Hi guys,

I have a problem: A couple of days I did a stupid thing. Thinking it would free some diskspace I deleted "Windows\SoftwareDistribution" folder after rebooting I noticed that Windows update is not using Microsoft update service anymore, instead it reverted to Windows update service.

I clicked on the "Get updates for more software" link button, I was directed into Microsoft update website. unfortunately right after the "Review the license agreement" page I got the 0x80070002 error on Microsoft update, so I tried going to Windows update instead on IE but I also got an error there. When I tried checking for updates on My computer it worked like a charm (only Windows update not Microsoft update).

So I googled the error (since Microsoft website was no help at all) I found a couple of solutions

Deleting the content of "Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore" then starting Windows update. And that was no help at all.I reverted the content of the folder "Windows\SoftwareDistribution" as it was before I started missing with it. And that was no help at all.I tried running the regsvr32 on Windows update dlls as advised by an article I've read. And that was no help at all.
I don't remember if there were anymore possible resolutions to my problem that I've tried but nothing seems to be working at all.

In case it matters I had Windows XP SP3 installed on my machine before upgrading to Vista Ultimate. And I use IE8 but my defau... Read more

Hello everyone,
this my first ever post on this forum. I have used your valuable information in the past to solve all my problems - THANK YOU.
I have been trying to update my Lenovo T430 laptop with an error code at the end of the update attempt of 80070643 & 9C59. It also gives me the dialog box with the error Code: 0x80070002. I have attached the zipped CBS file & 2 x screen shots of the error dialog boxes. I have tried various fixes found on other site without any success. I also attempted a repair install last night. The repair did everything right, except fixing the update issue.
The PC seems to run fine without any other problems, except every time I boot up & logon, the error Code: 0x80070002 dialog box appears.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not really too sure what to try after that, and I would like to fix this without having to reinstall Windows 8, if its possible.

A:Windows Update Error 0x80070643 w/ 0x80070002

I'm not sure what exactly causes that issue - but being a Defender update, perhaps wait a day or so and update with the revised version.

What I do know though, having looked at the scripts contained in the FixIt troubleshooter (WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab), is that only these versions are supported.

#Windows 7 6.1
#Windows Server 2008 R2 6.1
#Windows Server 2008 6.0
#Windows Vista 6.0
#Windows Server 2003 R2 5.2
#Windows Server 2003 5.2
#Windows XP 5.1
#Windows 2000 5.0

Thus running this on windows 8 is of no use.(albeit MS support says otherwise)

EDIT: delving deeper there is in fact windows 8 support - can't find anything relating to 8.1* (i.e 6.3) though.

elseif(([int]::Parse($OS.version[0]) -eq 6) -and ([int]::Parse($OS.version[2]) -eq 2)){

return 62 # windows 8

* EDIT2: Found something that will handle 8.1:

if($CurrentVersion -ge 6.2)
$Ispostback = ($true -eq (ispostbackOnWin8 "BITSDiagnsotics"))

Lots of scripts to go through - will get there eventually...

PS: Sorry for hijacking the thread.

My computer can still download some updates automatically but when I try to install recommended updates manually
it says downloading but nothing happens. When I visit the Microsoft Windows Update website it shows a small red circle with a white x in it to the left of this error message: The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. [Error number 0x80070002].
In the past most of the updates installed successfully, but some failed, and now I can no longer access the history list of updates.
I have Windows Vista Home Premium operating system and a 2008 Acer Aspire computer.
I tried many things suggested by Microsoft Community support but nothing worked. For one step they suggested opening
the cmd (Windows Command Processor) and changing something but for some reason access is denied to cmd files, even when I open it as administrator. Microsoft articles on fixing error code 0x80070002 didn't help either.
I Googled the problem and it seems my registry may be messed up? Many people with this problem have recommended
RegCure. I ran the trial version & it found 800 errors on my system but I'm not sure if I should buy it as there may be some other problem.
If anyone has any answers please let me know.

I am having difficulties updating an offline image (.WIM file) with the DISM command line tool.  The error that occurrs is as follows:

i recently formatted my hard drive and reinstalled my OS and then installed Microsoft Security Essentials. Everything was working very well, I was able to install Windows Updates etc, but then started getting the 0x80070002 error when trying to update MSE. I've done searches all over the web and nothing has helped. I did discover that if I turn the "Windows Update" service to either Manual or Automatic, instead of Automatic-Delayed Start it will update fine. However if it's set to Automatic and I reboot the machine it reverts back to Automatic Delayed start. If I change it to manual and then reboot it will stay on manual, however I don't think that's an ideal situation being then Windows Updates don't update automatically.

Does anyone have any advice, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

Windows 10 Pro (version 1607, Build 14393.51) won't update. I think it may be affecting other hardware because I can't get my wireless display dongle to work - which did work before a previous windows 10 update.

I don't know if this is relevant but the wireless display dongle stats are:
Company: DiamondP/N: WUSB DongleM/N: WPCTVTXDriver: DisplayLink USB Graphics Software for Windows 8.0 M2.exe (Won't work correctly.)

The main goal is fixing Windows Update. Maybe if we can fix that, the dongle might work.

Anyways, sfc /scannow gives me

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

both after a regular boot and while run in safe mode.

Need some guidance.

I'm trying to help a friend who got hit by something, virus, malware etc. Cleaned that up but....

In looking over his Win 7 64bit Home Premium system, I noticed his Windows Update had not run in over a year. So I tried to run it manually and have been going down a rabbit hole ever since.

It looks like something has completely removed all the subkeys to "Component Based Servicing" which is core to the whole Update process. TrustedInstaller is throwing all sorts of 126 errors.

I tried to run an sfc /scannow and it fails

So last I ran a Readiness Test. Whoa, it fixed 8 and left 5478 errors. Almost all related to the regkeys needed for Component Based Servicing.

Is there an overall re-install for Windows Update and it's dependent components? Is there any chance this laptop can be saved? I've run out of idea's. All googled fixes have failed so I'm open to all suggestions at this point

OK, I'm pretty *** right now!

I bought my laptop brand new in September with Vista preinstalled. I tried to update the system but I couldn't because apparently Microsoft *** up Vista so bad that they didn't even bother testing it properly before the release date to see if it works at all. As we all know, Microsoft is in a monopol market position so it can treat its customers in whatever *** way it wants to.

Ok, enough of the vent.

I spent 1 week tring to figure out how I can update Vista because I kept getting error 0x80073712 all the time. It turned out that the problem was that when Microsoft released Vista, some of the system files were corrupt, and that prevented me from updating. What's more, I was also informed that I could only resolve this issue by reinstalling Vista from CD which I did not have, because I got it preinstalled on my laptop! So, there is no way I can ever get any updates?!?? Naturally, the information that I found on the Microsoft support page was a piece of **.

(The "Windows Features" dialog box is empty in Windows Vista, or you receive an error message that includes the following code when you try to use Windows Update: "0x80073712")

Nevertheless, I still did a system scan, and it didn't produce any results, just as I expected.
After one week of struggling to find a way out of the ** microsoft kindly dumped on me, I found a tweak on another forum, which finally worked!! I had gone through like 10 different solutions bef... Read more

I'm trying to update this laptop running Win7 with no SP1. Since i got a limited traffic ISP plan i downloaded SP1 (windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe) and im trying to install in like that, though it fails when updating through windows update (i cant be 100% sure but I think with the same error code).
The error it presents at the end in the Details is ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT(0X80073712).
Downloaded and ran SURT (Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x86.msu), it just completed, retried to install SP1 and got the same error.
Ran sfc /scannow and got this
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
My CBS.zip is in the atachments.

Yes, I have seen it before. It is not exactly uncommon. In all previous cases that I have dealt with, it has always been in error. Looking over the CBS.log file showed that SFC did in fact scan very few, or no, files. Often the CBS.log actually showed an error which SFC did not graphically report. In my experience, there are certain errors which SFC cannot recover from. In these cases, it stops part way with a 'Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation' error message. When it finishes too fast, despite claiming success, it often has had one of these fatal errors anyway, if I remember correctly.

Now, I could take the CBS.log, and see what seems to be going on, but if you ask me, it isn't worth it unless you have a problem. If your computer has a problem, which is why you ran SFC, then I shall take a look, but if all seems well, then you risk more by fiddling.

A:Error code 0x80073712

Hello Paul!

Thanks for letting me know about that error

Error code 0x80073712 maps to ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT. This error is one of the few which can cause SFC to fail. These two are definitely linked.

As you have seen, SFC is not robust enough to deal with corruptions when its store copy is also corrupt. It can deal with problems when it has a clean store, but a corruption elsewhere, but when its store is damaged, it fails.

Therefore, we need a second tool downloaded from the internet with its own store built into the download to identify problems in the store. I also intend to take a copy of the CBS.log, just to diagnose what exactly is corrupted, how badly is is corrupted, how to fix it if it is possible to fix, or whether it does not actually need to be fixed (I doubt this scenario). At the moment, I am just diagnosing what is wrong, and what needs to be done.

Please download this independant tool (the System Update Readiness Tool) from here: Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2 and install it.

Once it has installed, please copy the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder (the whole folder, please) to your Desktop, right click on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, create a new thread in this forum: http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/ (It is better to keep something like this in its own thread, and leave this thread for simple on... I've come across a Windows 7 Professional SP1 x86 system which attempts to install

KB3108664 daily, and fails daily with error 0x80073712. It has been doing this for weeks and weeks.

Please note: All other Windows updates both before and since are updating successfully. Only KB3108664 is failing.

What I have tried already:

sfc /scannow - cleanSystem Update Readiness ToolWindows 7 Update Troubleshooter - several times
All run successfully.

But KB3108664, and only KB3108664, continues to fail every time with error 0x80073712, both when run through Windows Update, and also when downloaded and installed manually.

I looked at LOGS\CheckSUR.log, and something is definitely wrong with this update. But I do not know how to interpret what I am looking at or what to do next.

If you need any further info, please let me know.

I'm on my 4th re-install since 6/10/16. The reason being, when I closed there were 163 updates available, once it finished it would revert back and hang for 30 +. At which point I would be pretty much re-install. It has yet to show I have any updates,
so here I sit. Needles to say I can't install anything. That is the only way I would see any updates, windows update just runs until hour + later it stops saying I need to select a install method, which I've done, but do it again and repeat everything.

I wanted to install 10 but unable I assume for the same reason.
