Compaq Presario 700 and battery

Q: Compaq Presario 700 and battery

i have a question...a while ago my Presario battery died -- it wouldn't charge or discharge, the laptop could only work on the AC, but the indicator showed the correct % of the charge... I bought a new battery and it worked fine for a week, but I decided to reinstall Windows XP, and from then on, it's been a rollercoaster ride for me (( First, it worked fine, but the laptop started to freeze every 20 minutes. I followed the COmpaq's people advice and updated BIOS for some battery controller thing and updated the video driver. From then on, the problems with my new battery just started to overwhelm me First, the battery wouldn't charge when the laptop was ON. Then somehow it did charge. I decided to calibrate it, and now it doesnt want to charge -- on or off. The red light indicating the battery is flashing -- as it's not charging, and the indicator says "0" % of course.
Does anyone have any ideas?? Please? This only started after I reinstalled the Windows, so I am sure it's not hardware or the battery, everything worked just fine ((
Please help me!!!! Thanks... I'm desperate....

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I am trying to confirm the appearance of the cmos battery in a compaq presarion 1200xl-111 notebook. At the location shown in the manual is a socketed item that looks like an old single transistor. Approx 3/8" (10mm) . It has no markings for voltage, and despite the fact that compaq support says to remove the battery to reset the password, it is not in the parts list?

When I look up a replacement, at a battery site which has photo's,it shows a standard 3.3 v watch type battery as the replacement. If it is a replacement it must have prongs on the back to insert. I have tried gently to remove it, but it will require more force to remove than I want to apply without checking to be certain it is the component.

Sorry to be so wordy, but did want to give full history. Familar with desktop units, but new to laptops.

Thanks for any assistance.

I have never heard of a cmos battery in that configuration. I personally doubt that is the battery. I would think it would be one of the standard 3.3v round button cells about the size of a quarter.

I have an old Compaq Presario 1070 laptop, running Windows 98. It hasn't been used for many years, I want to revive it to run piano lessons via its MIDI port. Running on AC, LCD shows AC connection, green power light comes on, but it will not boot. I'm certain the CMOS battery is dead(referenced to be a CR1220, 3v cell). WHERE IS IT? and how do you access the battery. Thankyou.

A:Compaq Presario 1070 CMOS battery

It should still boot and give you an error even with a dead CMOS battery, not always but in most cases.

The battery may be located under a panel on the bottom or in the battery compartment. Actually have you tried booting with the battery removed?

I need to replace the CMOS battery on the motherboard of my Compaq Presario 1200 Laptop. Does anyone have instructions on opening the case to access the battery?
I have been able to get the case open enough to access the Hard Drive but can't figure out how to get all of the way to the battery which, I believe, is very near the back of the unit under the hinges to the screen.
If I were able to remove the screen, I might be able to get that part of the case apart.
Suggestions please,
Thanks,

The normal battery that came with the laptop is 10.8v 4090mah. However, the battery is now weak and I'm looking to replace it. But the replacement battery I found has a bigger capacity ? 6600mah 11.1v. I want to know if its safe for my laptop, because many people from Google search results said its okay if its 11.1v, and some online store sellers also said it's okay to use 11.1v replacement for a 10.8v battery. Please let me hear your opinions.

Upon starting my laptop, I get a message that the system has detected the storage capacity of the primary internal battery is very low and needs to be replaced. No important programs load and the desktop loads normal brightness until I move the cursor and the brightness fades to very low. I have to admit that yesterday, I accidently spilled about 3 tablespoons of lemonade onto the lower right hand side of the keyboard. Everything seemed fine until about an hour later, when the pages of any internet site seemed to scroll down by themselves and I couldn't control with the "page up button"......kept scrolling down. Then when I went to my Vanguard account screen and tried to type in my user name, with the last 3 digits of 627, what kept appearing was 6267. everytime I tried.
Then on an MSNBC site, I was watching a replay of one of their programs and their video program has it's own volume button.
Everytime I tried to raise the volume, it went down on it's own. It wasn't until this morning that when I turned on the lap top, most of the task bar was empty and the screen would fade. I took the back panels off to look for that "internal battery" but couldnt see it.
Research on the internet keeps directing me to the large detachable battery on the back but this battery has proven to be good.
If I take that battery out and just try using only the power cord, I still get the same bad results mentioned above.

Hi!

I own a Compaq Presario 1247 laptop (AMD K6II/400MHz, 2.2V, 160 MB RAM, 30GB HDD, 24x CDROM, model number 1456VQLIN, 3 or 4 years old I think...), and the darn thing won't power on. I gave it to my sis and it came back dead. She had taken it to compusa I believe, where the guy told her to replace the battery. When I plug it into the wall socket, the LED to indicate it's plugged in comes on, but the one that indicates the battery is charging doesn't. The battery has a light indicator to say how much charge is in it, and none of the leds come on (0% I guess). Pressing the power button has no effect, whether or not the battery is inserted into its bay. I'd bring it to compusa here, but they charge $140 just to look at the machine... since a battery costs less, I thought I'd try getting a new one first, but it seems strange to me that the computer won't boot when the battery is out of the bay. Am I barking up the wrong tree? Should I be looking for other causes? (fried motherboard, maybe, I dunno?) Thanks mucho for any help at all (or even sympathy )!

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)

If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.

However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.

I friend of mine purchased this Presario in 2004. She hasn't had internet since about 2006, so she hasn't had any of the updates since then. I brought her tower home with me since I have internet to load her updates. We're trying to get it internet ready. When I brought it home last week nothing would open. So yesterday she gave me the system recovery disc. I started with the Standard Recovery, but there were too many files that it couldn't recover. So I then decided to do a full recovery. After the full recovery it was rebooting and it told me that not all the system could reload and I couldn't hit okaybecause it wouldn't read / acknowledge my mouse. So, I unhooked her computer and rehooked mine to see what her alternatives were. I found a website, they wanted to know all the things it wouldn't oload. All I can remember is that it was things that could me downloaded later like: Norton, AOL, Adobe, MSN, and QuickTime.

So, I unhoked mine and rehooked her's up (and booted up my laptop). When her's came back up it's saying: NTLDR is missing Pres Control + Alt +Delete to Restart

My question for you is there anyway I can save her conputer? She doesn't have a lot of funds, being a singe mother of a 7 yr old and I'm just a good friend trying to help her out.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide

I have purchased a Compaq Presario 600 with an Athlon XP 2200+ processor. I do not have a copy of Windows XP to wipe it with. Is there any way with the installed XP that I can refresh this system and remove data frome previous owners? Or Can I load Win 98?

A:Compaq Presario 600 ??

Compaqs usually have a hidden partition with all the factory loaded software on it in an image format. As long as it does and you can figure out how to access it you could probable do that - but you almost likely need the XP Product key and may need to reactivate XP after the recovery. XP can only be install on one machine at a time - so if they are still using it you are out of luck.

Watch the boot up for any recovery messages or take a trip to www.Compaq.com and look up the info for your make/model.

I can get it to come on enough to hear that it is running but it is not booting and the screen remains black. I contacted that previous owner but she said she never had any problems with it. I want to see if it can be fixed, cheeply if possible, befor I do anything else. Thanks for the help.

A:compaq presario 1200

Sounds like your gonna have to get you hands dirty and take the cover off. Remove the cover and start pulling out parts. ;-)

The best way to troubleshoot a machine is to only boot with the bare requirements.

CPU, RAM, VIDEO CARD...over course power supply...

I'd take out all other parts and PCI card, remove all hard drive cables and floppy cables. Take note which way the RED LINE goes when you put it back together...

If you have MOVED the computer recently, IE transported the computer in the back of your car truck, you might want to try and RESEAT the video card, and RAM. Shipping a computer in the mail and it arriving DOA at the customer more than likely points to a video card that needs to be reseated. Lucky for us, most new motherboard come with AGP slot lock thank goodness...

You need to get the BIOS from Compaq. While the board maybe MADE by another company, who knows what slight changes to the specs were made.

When you do your next upgrade, build your own and get a real BIOS.

If any here has an HP Pavilion or Compaq Presario PC or Notebook (current models), they will notice that the fan kicks in when needed. The fan doesn't really annoy me as much on my Compaq laptop, but on my HP desktop it is really annoying and loud. I think it forgot that it was only supposed to come on when needed because it is now on almost all the time. Can someone explain to me how this fan works in more detail and how I can possibly adjust when it comes on or at least the fan speed, SOMETHING!!! Thanx in advance.

A:HP/Compaq Pavilion/Presario Fan

If the fan kicks in more then it used to it might mean that the computer needs a cleaning. These fans are temperature controlled and only kick in when a sensor detects the temperature to be at a certain level. Sone fans need to be on at all times - like the one on the CPU - but it may be possible to control it speed with software or BIOS settings.

Speedfan comes to mind, do a google search for it. It will list the motherboard temps and allow fan speed adjustment if the board supports it. If you have a case fan you can control its speed, as for the CPU fan - thats best left on a full speed.

First, open up the case and see if it needs a cleaning. You can also replace stock fans with quieter ones if they are too loud or wearing out.

Not too sure what you need help with.
Do you mean the sound does not work since upgrading to Windows 7?

This is because the existing audio driver is not compatible with Windows 7, and unfortunately HP/Compaq do not have any Windows 7 drivers for the Presario V3417LA. The Windows Vista driver might work. You can download it from here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...3&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=3437668

Click the 'plus' symbol next to "Driver - Audio", then click "Connexant high-defintion audio driver".

If this driver does not work you will have to use Google Search to try and find one that does.
You really should have checked what drivers were available from the Compaq website before upgrading to Windows 7.
Some older laptops are just not suitable for upgrading to Windows 7 because of possible driver issues.

2. click Advanced Options
3. select system recovery (may say restore the computer to factory settings)
and click recover without backing up files, click next

It will do the rest on its own.

Do this with ONLY mouse, keyboard, monitor and power attached. If you added any parts inside other than ram you will need to remove them to ensure it works properly.

Hello-have prev worked with Compaq tech support 3 sessions but still have same problem with video. Until recently, I could watch MSNBC video OK. Have never been able to watch CNN video. No new software has been added to computer recently. Now, when I click to see video on MSNBC, it acts like it's going to open, then get x in corner and says done in taskbar. Then screen comes up telling me to install free software and a link to windows media player 10. I do this, it loads as it should, and I try to install as normal. At end of installation, it gives me error message from Windows Media Technologies. It says"this version of WMT is incompatible with this version of windows. For more info view the info at the Microsoft website". Have tried this several times. Have gone thru several scenarios with compaq and tried many different remedies. Have tried to uninstall all WMP entirely and reinstall. Many restarts. Disc popup blocker, antivirus, firwall, defrag, run programs that compaq had me try. Same prob now. Have the 8 system recovery disc's from compaq if all else fails but don't want to do that if it can be corrected any other way.

I have a compaq presario 7470 in my possession. It used to work, but not for some reason it refuses to. I just bought a power supply for it and it still doesnt work. I figured out that if u remove the J3 pin from pins 2 and 3 after pressing the power button it will turn on. The compaq screen comes up and it says '102-System Board Failure.' This seems bad...what should i do? is it a fried motherboard? if the board was fried would it even turn on?? Thanks!

A:Compaq Presario 7470

I don't think the motherboard is fried in which case it wouldn't boot, as you say. But it definitly is having some problems...

Has Compaq support service gotten back with you yet ?

Backlight is out no doubt, screen look fine with flash light held up to it? Not much you can do for that, doubtful you can replace that unless you are pretty seriously technical.

How do you get to the HHD drive in the compaq presario 1456VQLIN?

I'm not finding that model so that must not be the model number. Typically, you turn over the laptop and the hard drive should be under a large panel...

Hello all,

My 92-year-old grandfather -- who lives on a little island off the coast of Maine -- has emailed me regarding a problem that he is having with his ten-year old computer. If anyone out there would be kind enough to offer some advice on how to fix it, it would be greatly appreciated. There are no computer shops on the island, but my grandfather has plenty of tools and has worked extensively with radios throughout his life, so with some direction I have little doubt that he can make the repair.

This is an unconventional post, to be sure, and I don't really know anything about his computer ... but I think he has done a reasonable job describing the issue:

Hi Chris!
I have a severe computer trouble that I brought on myself.
First I will describe the computer and it's programs.
It is a Compaq, Presario 1200,
at least 10 yrs old.
Along the front edge of the top it has three indicator lights at the
left of center and three on the right.

The ones on the left are operating lights of which one shows when
the charger is in and the left most one shows when the computer is
started up by the button which is in front of the screen.
The one between these two shows the operating conditions, I believe,
as it usually flickers in concert with whatever is going on.
The three on the right each has a "locked padlock" symbol.
For programs it has Windows 98, Juno V.4, Intel Create and Share
and some other good things.
Everything has been working good.
I do... Read more

What a sweet letter from "Grumpy Gramp"! Has he tried to plug in to another outlet completely? I would take the battery out completely and try this.

Original 500GB HDD was showing signs of eminent failure.I successfully cloned the drive to a new 400GB HDD, using NORTON GHOST.(I know this drive is smaller than the original, but less than 30GB was being used on the original)Anyway, The new drive would not boot.Assuming that the problem may be OS license-related, I ordered the Compaq Recovery Discs Set.While waiting for the Recovery Disc Set to arrive, I purchased a Sandisk 120GB SSD.(Again, I know that the 120GB SSD is smaller than the original 500GB HDD that came with the computer, but I do not plan to even fill it 50%.)Anyway, The Recovery Disc Set arrived and I attemted to use it on the new Sandisk 120GB SSD.The process seemed to go fine, all 3 discs of the set seemed to copy, and then the computer restarts and a screen displaying files flying across the screen from one folder to another stays there forever.I waited 15 hours and came back and I still just see:Files flying across the screen, from one folder to another folder. The drive activity light is blinking, but obviously there is a problem. Some possible related facts/information:The SSD is detected in the BIOS.The SSD Checks good, by the BIOS Diagnostics "Smart" Tests.I cannot find anywhere in the BIOS to disable AHCI, it only shows SATA or IDE.Current Bios version is 5.5.5, and I have been unable to find a BIOS Update anywhere.Current Memory (RAM) is 4GB (2x2GB), which was an upgrade since the machine was originally purchased. Can someone p... I have a Compaq Presario 2700T with problems. When I press the start switch it runs for about five seconds and then shuts off. It doesn't even run long enough to give me any screen image. It does this on every attempt to start the computer now. Prior to that it flashed a blue screen on a previous start attempt but not long enough to read what it said.
Any ideas what is going on?

I took the keypad off and found the heatsink and fan loose from the motherboard. The four soldered nuts that the heatsink and fan mounting plate screw onto are broken off from the motherboard. I am not sure if this is what is causing the problem but it's not good. I tried to start the computer while holding pressure on the loose mounting plate but it did not make any difference.

Hi Guys,

I Have a Compaq Presario SR1000 and I ended up getting a virus on the machine. Now I cant boot in to windows or safemode, but I know the harddrive is partitioned.

I dont have the manual or boot disks for the computer anymore, does anyone know the command for these machines to access the partion?

any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

A:Solved: Compaq Presario

The manual doesn't say .. But I'd try the F10 key at Bootup.

You can also Email HP support and see if they know ...
... and If you can still get the recovery CDs ..
[email protected]

Does this computer have a sticker on the side .. or somewhere ....
That tells the M$ product code for the operating system installed ???

We have a very old Presario 4550, connected to an old cathode tube display and we also can't find a functional printer with old fashioned connectors. There are two USB ports on the back of the tower - could we connect a more modern display and printer to this tower using the USB ports?

Hi there @stevekra, May the Forums be with you!  It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel.  I understand that you are looking for help with the a printer for your older model computer.  I am happy to help with this. I am assuming the printer connection type you are looking for is an old parallel or Centronics connection.  That connection type is no longer being used in newer printers, and as far as I know has not been for many years, having been replaced by USB, Ethernet and Wireless connections. Any printer with a Centronics connector is going to about as old as the computer you are working with.   Now it is possible you can get a printer with a USB connection to work, but depending on what operating system you have installed and the capabilities of your USB ports this may also be an issue. Your system is likely using USB 1.x ports, whereas the current standard is 2.x or 3.x. Your hardware and/or OS may not be able to recognize newer devices, and the drivers avaialbe for those devices may be for Windows 8.x or 10.  I am not saying it is impossible, but that you are going to have some forseeable challenges getting devices to work. You may find that you will need to make a wholesale upgrade to the system to work with newer devices, and it may be better to look at a newer system. Just my two cents. Please let me know whether that works for you, a... Related to the problem that I posted about here: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic141683.html, this is a little more urgent. The Compaq will frequently, sometimes regularly lock up: screen freezes, neither mousepad nor keyboard respond, and the harddisk parks the heads. Lately, it locks up when it's on the charger, and then is fine (at least, so it seems) when on battery-power. It's also sensitive to being touched--not bumped, it's that unpredictable. Sometimes, I can move it around without problem, other times, if I even touch it, it freezes.

The fans still run like normal, so I don't think that it's overheating. I'm afraid it's a motherboard issue, which I wouldn't be surprised at, considering that it's about 6 years old.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
