Windows 7 Service Pack 1 fails to install error code 8024200D

Q: Windows 7 Service Pack 1 fails to install error code 8024200D

Hi just logged into the forum and hope someone can help. I have tried to install this update six times today (07/05/12) after it was flagged as an important update this morning. Looking at my update history it also failed to instal on the 18th October last year but it has not bothered me since and i have not noticed it until now. Of the seven attempts I had the following error codes from earliest to latest : 800B0100, 80246007, 80010108, 8024200D, 8024200D, 8024200D, 8024200D. I have followed advice from MS running KB947821 and FIX IT also disabled my Norton 360 firewalls and auto protect but to no avail. If anyone can help please bear in mind I am not a techie so will need to be told what to do fully. I have read advice on editting the registry but I do not go there! There be dragons!! Also I do not have a DVD with Windows 7 as it was not supplied with my PC and I don't want to restore my computer and lose all my installed software. Any help would be much appreciated. Should I just hide the update and ignore it or will that come back and bite me? Thanks in anticipation.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

I already tried installing different tools (Fixits, Tool System Update Readiness etc.) from Microsoft Knowledge Base - none of them worked.

It neither installs with Windows Update nor with downloading the update manually.

I use windows 7 professional 64bit.

Hope anyone can help because I am at the end of my wisdom

Thanks a lot for your help!

I have checked the Microsoft help page, multiple other people seem to have the same or a similar problem. Some of them have had success in solving it, but their solutions do not work for me. The service pack downloads fine, but fails when installing, giving me the error code 8024200D (which I have looked up, and the answers there did not help.) I have run the system update readiness tool, which did not find anything out of the ordinary, and I have also done the SFC scan, which also did not find anything out of the ordinary.

I have some suspicions that it might be because I have Windows N Ultimate edition, but I am not sure. The screenshot is from viewing the details of the failed update on the "view update history" screen in Windows Update. It doesn't really say anything that I have not already said. I am completely puzzled here.

I guess I COULD make a backup and install regular Windows 7 to fix the issue (even if it isn't compatibility, a clean install might fix it), but I would like to avoid that if possible. Thank you in advance, and if you need any more information to help me, don't be afraid to ask.

Hey,

I tried to install SP1, but Windows Update still gives me that error (8024200D). Installing without Windows Update doesn't work. Tried System Update Readiness Tool and installing again - still no effect. SFC scan also didn't find any problems.

I was trying to find solution on Internet, but no results... So I am writing here for help ;/

I followed all the advice on the Microsoft Help link relating to Error 0x800F0826.
I downloaded and ran the recommended Windows Update pre-install tool, but the error persists.
I also downloaded the SP1 update directly from the Microsoft Help Site. Again the installation failed with the same unknown error code as above.
In every case the download would complete successfully.
However, on restarting the computer to allow Windows to complete the installation, an installation failed message would appear and Windows would then revert to its previous settings.
Reinstalling Windows 7 isn't an option since I do not have the Windows 7 disk.

Hi.

This issue may occur if the Component-Based Servicing (CBS) manifest is corrupted.

Did you try to run SFC /SCANNOW to check for damaged Windows files?

1. Open an elevated command prompt.
2. Run the "sfc /scannow" command.
3. Try to install update again.

Hope this helps.

Hi

These are the details from the update history:

Installation date: ‎2015/‎05/‎20 12:11 PM

As far as I can tell it has something to do with IE 9 which I am unable to uninstall - it does not appear in the list of installed programs.

I have run the system update readiness tool (Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64.msu) and sfc /scannow. I have attached the CBS.log as instructed here : Windows Update Posting Instructions.

Hope someone can help (I saw a very similar error with an apparently happy ending on these forums).

When running Windows Update, I always get error code 80073701. The help for this problem asks me to check if SP1 is already installed (it isn't) and suggests downloading it from the online download center (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down...s.aspx?id=5842). This also fails, saying referenced assembly could not be found error code 0x800737701. I then downloaded and ran the System Update Readiness Tool (Troubleshoot problems installing Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 - Windows Help), which successfully downloaded and ran Hotfix for Windows (KB947821). I tried to install the service pack from online again and got the same error code and comment about the assembly being missing. I then ran the Windows Update troubleshooter, which found no problem. I turned off the real time monitoring in Microsoft Security Essentials (my only antivirus or antispyware program) and tried to install the service pack from Windows Update again. I got the same error code (80073701) that I have been getting on every attempt for months. I did the sfc/scannow as you instruct and nothing was found, and I have attached the CBS zip file. Please help me install this service pack so that I will later be able to upgrade to Windows 10.

I am running Vista Home premium 32 bit and having huge trouble getting Service Pack 2 to install . I'm getting error code 80070570 ( File or directory is corrupted and unreadable )

So far I have tried

* Update from Window update ( get error code )

* Disabling antivirus and firewalls and trying it again ( still switched off and no joy)

* Switching windows automatic update off ( still get error code )
* Updating from the Standalone Pack ( get error code )
( and I have checked its the correct one for 32 bit )

* Running the System Update Readiness Tool ( was also getting an error code on this but I ran it in a clean boot and it installed but SP2 still wouldn't install afterwards

* Deleting the content of Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download File. I have also tried renaming this file I taking ownership ( I now have ownership and have full control according to the properties) and following every tutorial I can then it just will not let me rename it ( Destination folder access denied. You need permission to perform this operation )

* I've tried saving the SP2 file to the desktop and running it after a clean boot and also in safe mode - same error

My main Vista screen shows I have 1 GB of RAM if that affects it any

I've been pulling my hair out for 10 days now - has anyone see anything else I could do !!

Thanks in advance

Try deleting "cd2b15b1a90e884578188440a1660b12" directory in c\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\
Once done Restart the computer and try installing Service Pack 2.

Before deleting it you need to take ownership of the Software Distribution Folder
To take ownership of a folder, follow these steps:
Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.In the Name list, click your user name, or click Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group. If you want to take ownership of the contents of the folder, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.Click OK, and then click Yes when you receive the following message: You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folder name. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control?
All permissions will be replaced if you click Yes.

Note folder name is the name of the folder that you want to take ownership of.Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the folder and its contents.

Hoping you guys could help me out with my SP1 install, as I get error 8024200D when I run it through Windows Update. I have gone through the usual stuff, like the sfc /scannow command (no issues), and the System Update Readiness Tool (also fine).

I tried installing manually, but then I get a different error (0x8007002). I was going to start going through the threads here to see what worked, but someone said that each case is likely to be different, so post a thread. So that's what I'm doing. The CBS zip is kinda large, I think it has logs from all of the install attempts, but I didn't want to screw anything up so I left it alone.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate N. Let me know if you need anything else.

Hi,

I had Windows XP service pack 1 installed and found that I needed to upgrade to sp2 to continue to run AVG's antivirus software as well as other programs.

I first encountered a cryptographic service related error (0x800710D9) when trying to install but managed to solve that. However my next attempt at trying to install the service pack failed. This occured near the end of the install. The message box said that my "Service Pack installation failed" and the error code associated with it was 0xD0000005. While looking through Microsoft's support pages it seemed I had an "access denied" problem and that the permission settings to the registry keys were wrong. I looked in the setupapi.log file to see which keys were affected but didn't have much luck. There was one error code that I did find though. Here are a couple of lines from the log file:

#E077 Could not locate a non-empty section [iis_doc_install] when calculating disk space in "C:\WINDOWS\INF\iis.inf". Error 0xe0000102: The required line was not found in the INF.
#E077 Could not locate a non-empty section [iis_ftp_install] when calculating disk space in "C:\WINDOWS\INF\iis.inf". Error 0xe0000102: The required line was not found in the INF.

Assuming that the installation was a failure I decided to restart my computer and attempt another reinstall in the hope that the problem might not happen again.

When I did this though the computer began to load Windows XP Se... Read more

Hi

I have several updates(currently 3 but it was 5 last time I tried) that fail.
They seem to download alright, but on installation the progress bar takes a few leaps
to the end, and it's all fails. I stopped updating for a week or so, and today, I was able
to successfully apply 14 out of the 17 updates that were available. So now it's just these
3 for some reason.

Those are:

Important updates
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based System(KB3040272)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based System(KB3065979)
Optional
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based System(KB3064209)

Here's the info:
OS is Windows 7 Home premium(64bit)
The error code I am given is: 8024200D
I have downloaded and run the SURT tool.
I have also several times run the sfc /scannow cmd.
I repeatedly tried to update at every stage, with no luck.
The CBS.zip is attached.

Running the automatic troubleshooter from the microsoft site reports the following
as a Windows update error and says it couldn't fix it:

InformationalError Report
RootCause: RC_DataStore
ErrorCode: 0x800F081F

As you can see, the error code there is a different one than the one I get directly from
the failed Windows update.

Any help/suggestions much appreciated.

A:Some updates won't install Error Code: 8024200D

I searched for the updates in question online, and downloaded and installed them manually. I then checked for new updates(after a reboot), and windows update successfully downloaded and installed all by itself. It seems my troubles are a thing of yesterday. Hooray! Still though, I don't get why this happened in the first place ... oh well.

After getting great advice and help on this forum after a massive computer problem I had to reinstall the OS. I am in the process of getting all the Microsoft updates installed as well. After waiting about an hour on Service Pack 2 installation I get a message "Access is denied, installation failed". I tried rebooting the computer and attempting again and got no further.

Does anyone have any ideas what may be preventing SP2 from installing? Or what I can possibly do to get around this issue?

Thanks again!

I tested the service pack 1st on a spare machine to see what the changes were & whether they seemed necessary. Some obvious changes like firewall & wireless networking suit my needs so i went with it. Some visual differences were apparent which mean nothing yet but further on helped identify some strange goings on!. Before i confuse anyone, my spare machine is a "shuttle" & my main machine i call my "gamer".....This is a brief rundown of the steps i took:-

1. Slipstream SP2 to a directory containing XP disc contents which already had been slipstreamed with SP1. No instructions here as they are elsewhere on the NET. No problem, checked the disk booted & kept it to one side just in case.

2. Install SP2 on shuttle, reboot, everything appeared OK.

3. Install SP2 on gamer, reboot but hangs at XP logo. Try another reboot but same again. Try reboot to safe mode, still hangs @ logo. Couple more trys but just hangs at XP logo everytime.

4. Boot to XP CD (SP1 slipstreamed, not SP2 as the disc mentioned before wasn't quite ready) ignore recovery console, let it find original windows installation & let it run a repair.

5. Reboots & fails again - this time with BSOD STOP: C0000135 corrupt or missing winsrv file.....

I've never been offered SP1 through windows update for some reason so i decided to download the standalone installer and i went through the following steps:

1. Ran the system update readiness tool - no errors found.
2. Went through following steps before installing - Steps to follow before you install Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 from the Microsoft Download Center - though in the third step listed the updates suggested failed to install saying they were not applicable to my computer even though i got the x64 versions.
3. Ran a full virus scan - found one infected script file so deleted.
4. Went ahead and tried installing SP1 but after going through the preparing computer process it came up unsuccessful with the message 'ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND_0x80070002'.

Here is where i got the service pack from - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...ang=en&id=5842 -the x64 version which i believe is 'windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe'.

So after this i ran through the following steps:

1. Ran the Fix It tool which again found no errors to repair.
2. Stopped the windows update service, renamed the SoftwareDistribution folder and restarted windows update service so as to re-download updates.
3. I also followed one solution whereby you boot into safe mode and allow permissions for [SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup] because a section of the CBS file says this registry root could not be opened. Rebooting again into safe mode and running the SP1 installer.

Please create a new folder on your Desktop called LOGS.

Copy into that new folder the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder, and the C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log file.

Right click on your new LOGS folder > Send to > Compressed (Zipped) folder, and upload it here for me.

I have tried multiple ways to resolve this problem (System Update Readiness Tool, SFC scan, Microsoft Fix it, manual installation, etc.) but to no avail.

When I try to install the Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932) via Windows Update, the installation fails with an error code 800B0100.

When I tried to manually install the SP, an error message appeared with details: "trust_e_nosignature (0x800b0100)."

I am pretty frustrated considering the number of unsuccessful attempts and time I've thrown into fixing this problem. So, hoping that it will be addressed here, I have attached my CheckSUR log. Please let me know if any more information is needed.

I am trying to install SP1 and am not able to either from Windows Update or the complete x64 package. I get the error File_Not_Found(0x80070002). I get this error after the computer restarts and the service pack fails to configure (around 10%). I have 7 Home Premium x64.

This happens after the computer restarts and fails to configure SP1 during startup. The solution for this error mentions having this error searching for updates which is not the problem in my case.

I have tried SFC scan, System Update Readiness tool and Fixitit 50202 but none of them fix the problem. I don't want to resort to an inplace upgrade.

I can't give the exact message because I'm not at my home computer. But when I click ok on the error message it shuts down the entire installation...

Its very frustrating, I've tried deleting unwanted things from my computer and rebooting but nothing works. Please help

A:Error Message when trying to install Windows XP Service Pack 2

Welcome to TSG....

When you get home write down the exact error message and post it here?

Where did you get the service pack 2 and what size is the file?

Hi
We have an issue with this security update, as it keeps on failing to install in windows update.
I receive error code: 851A004A
What I have did was to manually install the the update from the MS site, and the machine shows it has been installed and when I ran updates again, windows updates picks this security update again even though its installed.
I have removed SQL server 2012 developer edition  and all of its components, restarted the machine. Did windows updates and then installed SQL 2012 again and manualy installed KB3045321 and still after running windows updates, windows shows tries
to install this update.
My company runs reports from WSUS regarding failed windows updates. This machine appears in the report even though its installed. I have tried hiding this update and still it appears in the report.
I then built another machine, did windows updates, installed SQL server 2012 developer edition ran windows updates and again it fails to install the security update. It gives the same error message 851A004A. Again installed update manually and still
windows updates tries to install this update again.
Any ideas ?
