Lost My Unopened Items Folder In Outlook 2003

Q: Lost My Unopened Items Folder In Outlook 2003

Yeah . . . it was a dumb thing to do, but I inadvertently deleted the folder, even after I saw the warning. But I was distracted, and now my unopened items folder in Outlook is gone. Is there a way to get it back, because it's a pain to scroll through all my inbox folders to check unopened items.

Thanks, Pat

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My inbox reports (19) unread messages, but all of the messages in the inbox are read.

We use Windows 2003 STD exchange server (updated for 75Gb database by microsoft), and I am using windows XP Pro, with outlook 2003.

I know that at least one message is missing, sent to a large group, but it is not in my inbox. My administrator does not know how to fix this.

Can you help?

Hi Krakmup,
Welcome to TSG. Is it possible there's a filter being applied? I'm not sure whether it's the same in Outlook 2003, but in 2002 you can go to View/Current View/Customize Current View. Does it say "Off" next to the Filter button or does it show that something's being filtered?

The following has already been tried:

- Select Tools and then the "Empty Deleted items folder"
- Restarted Outlook

Any suggestions?

Hey everyone --

OK, so I've been looking around the web for a while for an answer for this problem, but so far I haven't found any answers that have helped me. I'm having trouble on a computer in my office with it not being able to access its sent items folder. When I click on the folder, all I get on the screen is a gray box that says "Unable to display the folder." Every other folder works, and Outlook is checking everything out fine. I tried running MS's Inbox Repair Tool but I'm still having the same problem afterward. The only thing I can seem to find which is the cause of the problem is when outlook is networked in with an exchange server, which we don't have. The strangest thing of all is that the message counter that sits next to the sent folder keeps going up every time an email is sent out, showing that Outlook can access the file and save sent emails, yet there is no way for us to see them. If it helps, this computer also has ACT installed and the plugin active in Outlook.

Any ideas?!

When I delete an email in Outlook 2003, it doesn't move the deleted items to the recycle bin (deleted items folder). It will give me the prompt, "Are you sure you want to permanently delete the selected items?" If i click 'yes,' the email will not be moved to the deleted items folder where I could recover it, it is just totally gone. Basically when I delete an email from the Inbox, it skips the 'Deleted Items' folder all together. How do I get deleted emails to show up in the 'Deleted Items' folder first, before they are permanently deleted.

I'm aware of the Tools>Options>Other Tab "Empty the Deleted Items folder upon exiting" check box, and it is unchecked, besides my problem is not upon exiting Outlook.

Hi route66

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

Have you tried creating a new Personal Folder and seeing if the same behavior exists in the new Personal Folder as well?

If it does, try creating a new Profile.
If it doesn't, then you can make the new Personal Folders the default Personal Folders.
You can then either copy the folders from the old Personal Folders into the new Personal Folders or keep two Personal Folders open in Outlook 2003.

You can have several Personal Folders open in Outlook 2003.

Create a new Personal Folder (.pst) file and make it the default delivery location.

File > New > Outlook Data File
Name the new .pst file.
It should open in Outlook 2003.

Copy a message over to the Inbox of the new Personal Folders and see if the deletion process works properly in the new Personal Folders.
**To make the new Personal Folders the default delivery location:

Tools > E-mail Accounts > View or change existing e-mail accounts
In the drop down field for: Deliver new e-mail to the following location:
Select the new Personal Folders (.pst) file.

Close and restart Outlook 2003 for the changes to go into effect.

With Outlook 2003 closed, create a new Profile,
Control Panel > Mail Icon
Change the selection to: Prompt for a Profile to be used

Hello All,

I'm trying to send an email with an .xml attachment (generated by a registration form that I built in Adobe Acrobat 7.0) When I click the SUBMIT BY EMAIL button an Outlook email pops up, just like it's supposed to, with all data filled out correctly and the .xml attachment in place.

Once I click SEND the email window closes. When I check my SENT ITEMS folder the email shows up but the message doesn't actually get mailed out (ie the recipients don't receive it). I have tried sending from and to various addresses from 3 computers and always the same result. I would appreciate any help on this.

I am using Windows 7, Outlook 2003, Adobe Acrobat 7.0

By the way if I go into the SENT ITEMS folder and forward the message it sends properly.

These problems developed recently:
When try to empty deleted items folder, I get a message that outlook.pst is in use by another application. Close any application that is using this file and try again. Well, there is no other application using that file. Apparently, there is one email in the deleted items folder that is plugging up the folder. I can open the deleted items folder, right click on emails in there and delete them, but one email, which had an attachment from a web site does not respond. Right clicking on that email won't even bring up a menu.
The other error message I get is if I go to inbox or tasks and use find to search for a word, I get a message " The message interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook." Restarting Outlook doesn't help. The things I have tried without success are 1) removed & reinstalled Outlook, 2) ran search & repair,3) ran scanpst.exe against outlook.pst, and 4) tried to empty and find in safe mode.

Outlook 2002 -
When I opened my Sent Items folder to locate an email recently sent I discovered that there are no emails in the folder since June 28. It seems that after that day they just stopped being saved.

I have looked in Options to insure the box is checked to save email to sent items folder.

I just finished doing a reinstall of Office and that didn't fix it.

Any ideas for a solution are appreciated.

A:Solved: Outlook Sent Items don't appear in Sent Items folder

Probably an Outlook View setting that got changed.

Try this - Check your Outlook View options - click on the sent folder - then click the view tab (at the top) - then click current view and see what is checked off.

Ensure "messages" or "sent to" is checked.

If it is set to "unread message" then you will only see unread messages.
In the case of the sent folder - all should be already be "unread" and therfore view will not show anything.

Hope that helps.

User came in with a receiving email issue and to make a long story short I found that his inbox and all subfolders including sent, junk ect. are subfolders of the trash folder.(deleted Items) I tried to back up, clean(glary utils) and reinstall but the backup reordered the folders the way they were. I will uninstall again and hand build the folders and subs if need be but I was hoping someone here might know a fix before I spend 2 or more hours creating and moving from imported folders (home based company with 33000+ emails)

Any ideas appreciated.

Also noteworthy is that Norton failed after the hearbleed patch and had to be completely removed and reinstalled. the reinstallation of Norton was AFTER trying to repair Outlook.

I've been having a big problem with a user's email account. All he can do is view emails/calendar entries etc. and nothing more. He cannot reply, delete etc. any emails from his PC. I've confirmed that he does have the Standard toolbar up. I've also tried removing all profiles from his account and had him recreate his and it still persists with the current action.

Unfortunately, there is also no error messages whatsoever that go with this. He clicks on the button and nothing else happens. The computer simply acts as if he didn't press the button in all ways.

I'm going to try reinstalling Outlook/Office on this PC, but I'd really like to know what is causing this problem, and if there's a better fix than blowing away the entire Office Suite or at least Outlook.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

My boss has Outlook 2003 and a blackberry. I have no idea if the blackberry even figures into this.

He uses his calendar regularly and he also regularly archives his calendar items when Outlook asks if he would like to. Up until he got his Blackberry Pearl everything was available if he needed to go back and check items.

In December 2007 he told me that all of his items from February 2007 until September were not available either on the calendar or via the archive. Everthing prior to that was in archive. We did some troubleshooting and checked his settings. No one else had the problem and we did nothing.

He just emailed me and let me know that everthing prior to April of this year has now disappeared.

We do need to keep his calendar items for legal reasons.

1. Does anyone know why we are losing the items after successfully archiving (from 2002 until 2007)?

2. Does anyone know how to get the items back?

Any help at all would be appreciated.

I am using Outlook 2003 and I download the mails to the PST in my local HDD. Once the PST reaches the size of close to 2GB, outlook recommends you to purge some items and free up space or open a new PST and point that as the new mail delivery location.

Now, once I create a new PST, my calendar items stay with my old PST and I need to refer both the PSTs for current appointments/meetings.

Besides any one trying to schedule a meeting in outlook in my organization does not get visibility of my existing appointments which creates confusion.

I tried to move the calendar items one by one by drag and drop the items from old PST to new PST. It works for standalone meetings. If there are any recurring meetings, then it throws a error as below.

"Cann't move the items. You cannot move one occurrence of an appointment to a different folder. To move a recurring appointment, you must move the original appointment or copy the single occurrence and move the copy".

I tried to go to the first instance of the recurring appointment and moved it. But the result is the same error.

Can some one tell me a way to move all calendar items from one PST to another (something like export/import).

Thanks in advance.

I have an email sitting in my Hotmail Junk Mail folder which is causing concern. Because of my email security settings, that is the Folder that this message has been rightfully delivered to....

The sender's name, email address and subject line are authentic, however when looking at the Junk Mail Properties, I note that the email is merely a means for delivering a rather large [8717KB] PDF - there is no message shown in the body of the email to indicate what the PDF contains.

What I would like to do is move or copy the unopened email and attachmentto a Flashdrive, and then delete it from the Hotmail Junk Mail folder of my email account, thus isolating it completely.

Is there any way in which I can do this without opening the email or it's attachment?

A:Suspected malicious email - Can I move to a Flashdrive Folder Unopened

I'm not sure whether the attachment can be moved without opening the message, but perhaps you might consider installing a trial (non activated version) of Windows 7 inside a virtual machine, and then accessing your Hotmail account from within the VM? If the attachment goes nuclear on you, chances are that only the VM is compromised, which is easily taken care of by simply deleting it.

We have Microsoft Office Outlook 2003. A few days ago, we discovered that emails were getting "stuck" in the Outbox. We assumed they were not getting sent, but someone did receive at least one of them. At the same time, we think, an error message started to appear and continues to appear when we try to open the Sent Items folder: "Unable to display the folder. Errors have been detected in the file C:\Users\FitzGerald\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook1.pst. Quit Outlook and all mail-enabled applications, and then use the Inbox repair tool (Scanpst.exe) to diagnose and repair errors in the file. For more information about the Inbox repair tool, see Help."

We could not locate Scanpst.exe on our computer and the "detect and repair" option under Help did not help.

Any advice would be welcome!

Hello All,

I am in desperate need of some assistance and if anyone can help it would be much appreciated!

We are running Exchange 2007.

One of our staff members is using Outlook 2007 and has contacted us because their 'Sent Items' folder has "dissapeared" from there navigation tree view which is very odd. This is also the case on OWA which accesses the server directly and is a true image of the mailbox.

Now the strange thing is that when you search the users e-mail address in 'All Mail Items' and sort the list by 'From' they are all displayed and you can also add the collum 'In Folder' and it shows 'Sent Items'.

I have been searching Google for the passed few days and the closest I have come is to open the 'Sent Items' folder using the following workaround.... Click 'View', highlight 'Toolbars' and select 'Web', in the new toolbar field type "outlook:sent items" without quotes. This shows the 'Sent Items' folder as expected but it does not display in the Navigation tree view.

Both these methods prove that all the Sent Items are present and in the mailbox but appear to be hidden from the navigation view in both Outlook and OWA.

Below are the steps I have tried so far to no avail:

- Re-created the Outlook profile on another machine
- Connected to the mailbox via IMAP
- Disabled Cache Mode within Outlook
- Exported mailbox to .PST and opened within Outl... Read more

Deleting that folder should not even be an option....I would just like to know how you did that.

Probably the only way is to create a new personal folder which will have a Deleted Items in it. Go to the tools then email accounts. go to your account and look for the folders tabs. remnae the existing personal folder "old personal folder". Then create the new folder. Then go back to the outlook interfacetransfer you e-mails over to the new personal folder. Once your sure everything is moved over delete the "old folder".

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums

DBXtract will extract all the emails that you have deleted - not just the ones you see in the OE folder but whatever is on your hard drive. Read about it here and download. Donation freeware.

Once you have gotten all the emails and are satisfied, then the DELETED ITEMS.DBX file can be erased. Once you erase that, all the emails sitting in the folder (in OE) will also be erased and you should be able to access all your folders.

With XP, the DBX files are hidden files. To find the location, in OE click Tools, Options. Then on the Maintenance Tab click the Store Folder button. Close OE. Open Windows Explorer to that location and delete the Deleted Items.DBX file. When you open OE the next time, it will automatically create a brand new DBX file.

I'm using Outlook 2010 with Windows 10 for my small business.
Outlook is set up with multiple e-mail identities and multiple open PST folders, each one for a different business activity or different group of clients.
Rules for sorting incoming mail into various PST folders work well.
Copies of messages created by replying or forwarding a message in any folder are saved in the same folder, works well.
Copies of messages created by clicking the New E-mail button are saved in the Sent Items folder, works well but I want to use rules to then sort some of these messages from the Sent Items folder into other folders in order to keep all messages - in and out - from the same client in one folder.
So I use Rules Wizard to set up rules to move messages created and sent using the New E-mail button from the Sent Items folder where Outlook automatically saves them to my client message folders but the rule only works the first time, it moves all desired messages currently in the Sent Items folder to the target folder but after that the rule stops working.
Any new copies of sent messages going into the Sent Items folder are not sorted into other folders as per the rules I have set. I then have to periodically manually move all messages sent to each client out from the Sent Items folder into the client folder.
Is there a work-around or switch for this or am I expecting too much from the software?

Remember in Outlook 2003, when you flagged an item (for follow-up) and then deleted, it showed up in your Deleted folder with the red flag next to it? Well, the 2007 version automatically removes the flag once it's been deleted. How can I keep the deleted item flagged?

What you are telling us, is that you really do not want to delete this file?
Then what you need to do is make a "Holding" folder and place items there until you really want to delete them.

I have my systems set up, the the "Deleted" folder is emptied on exit of Outlook.

Can anyone tell me why my deleted items box may have disappeared? Not just the messages, but the whole folder. I didn't think Outlook would let you delete that. I'd like to have it back. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

My Outlook has just started sending all my emails directly into my Deleted Items folder and bypasses the Inbox. I have run 3 anti-virus scans (Avast, Malwarebytes, and Spybot--thorough scans). They found no viruses.

I did go and create a rule for a couple of contacts for them to go into the Inbox. Now they go into the Inbox and the Deleted Items folder.

I am very unsure of what to do now. I would appreciate any help you give me.

A:Outlook automatically sends email to Deleted Items folder

Couple questions.

1) Are you using Full Outlook or Outlook express?
2) Do the times in the deleted folder have any weird tagging on them (in the subject line)?
3) Is this connecting to an exchange server (like at work) or are you just using this for personal emails. (ie what email address are you getting email on )
4) do you remember any thing that you did recently in changing settings/ installing any new software, etc. . .

I have some users on Outlook 2003.
Here is the situation: When he opens outlook it automatically opens with the Outlook Today window. That is fine. But after he moves around and goes to the Inbox and then clicks on the Tasks. When he clicks on mail again he wants to go back to the Outlook today window.
He says he has done this on his home Outlook but can't remember how he did it.
Is there a way to do this.
I have played around but could not find a setting.
Any help would be great.

A:Outlook 2003 - Always move back to Outlook Today (Personal Folder)

All I do is click on the very top "Personal Folders" and it takes me back to Outlook Today.

I'm using Outlook 2003 SP2 in a standalone configuration with Win XP Professional SP2.

When I click on the Inbox item on the Outlook Today screen (not referring here to the file list at the left of the screen) I get the following message:

"Unable to display the folder. Microsoft Office Outlook could not access the specified folder location."

I backed up my .pst (and archive) files, uninstalled Outlook, re-started Windows, and re-installed Outlook. The problem persisted.

I can click on Inbox in the file list on the left of the Outlook screen - works fine. The problem is more of an annoyance than a major problem, but I'm uneasy that something's not working proprerly - Outlook's too important to me for odd, unexplained things to be happening!
