Windows auto switching

Q: Windows auto switching

Why is it that if I am typing in a window, then open another application and then go back to typing in that window and then it will auto switch to the application that I set to open.

I don't want it doing this and wonder if it can be stopped. For example I am typing in this form and then open a java app. that requires a password, it will switch to that java app. while I am typing in this window. I want it to where I will manual go to that application and then log in when I am ready.

Any thoughts!!!

Preferred Solution: Windows auto switching

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Windows auto switching

Is this happening AFTER the new program has been up and running for a time? Or right at the start of that other program opening?

If it is at the startup of that other program there is nothing you can do about it. "YOU" actually asked to have the focus shifted to that other program by opening it.
The only thing you can do is wait for that other program to open fully then switch back to your original program.
That is if you haven't ASKED that other program to do something in the background and when it is done doing that it is notifying you that it has finished.

I have set adaptive brightness to off and also turned off Intel's Display Power Saving Technology. But I noticed that the entire screen changes brightness (or contrast) while I switch between 2 windows (pictures). Is this normal?

I posted a video so you can see the problem (or is it?) in action

If you also want to test it out yourself, here are the images used while switching windows.

I also want to mention another issue I'm having (which I think is related to the one above, that's why I'm worried). I purchased an Asus X454LD last 5/5, and for some reason it keeps on flickering static. Sometimes not entirely on the screen, and not an opaque static but a translucent one that overlays with the work area. Then I got the unit replaced with a new one last 5/10 and the issue's still there. There are no specific programs or time that triggers this problem, it just happens. I even reinstalled both the Intel HD graphics driver and the dedicated 820m driver. I posted a video that shows the problem in action as well.
(at around 0:20-0:25)

Hoping for your replies. Thanks

I just did a clean installation of Windows 10 on a client's Pavilion x360 2-in-1 (model 11-n010dx), and Windows won't automatically switch to/from Tablet Mode  the way it's supposed to (tent or tablet = Tablet Mode, laptop = normal mode). I took care to install all the available hardware drivers & utilities from the HP support site, especially those that seemed related to slate mode detection (GPIO, Virtual Buttons, HP System Event Utility, etc.).  I have no missing drivers or "Unknown devices" in Device Manager. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

We currently have R940's and Z40-A's on our estate. As part of our build we enable the Auto Wirelss LAN RF Sitching option within the BIOS. We now need buy the Z40-C as the other models are obsolete. However, we don't get this option on the Z40-C BIOS. Has this option been removed on the Z40-C? If so, is there another way to automatically switch form Wifi to LAN when a NIC is plugged in or taken out?

I've been having a ongoing problem with Windows 7 not prioritizing LAN when Wifi is switched on. Switching Wifi off isnt an option (talking 50-100 laptop users) and will be an inconvenience to them.

The issue around this is that when on Wifi it doesn't seem to ask them to change their AD password on login when it has expired (often they don't even get the prior notifications).

I have tested both on Wifi and LAN and can confirm they do get the prompts as expected when on the LAN.

I've read and tried the 'matrix interface' suggestion and it didnt apear to work. The numbers changed (LAN lower than Wifi) but it still shows the Wifi icon. I have no doubt it is using both and I tested this copying a large file and it seems to utilize both.

However I want to not even have Wifi enabled but to be enabled/disabled by some sort of app. Im happy to pay for a trial of one if one exists.

Can you help please?

Please suggest me do I need to go for any new device to get the above work done or whatever device given below with that I can accomplish it and procedure I need follow.

1) DLink Router

(BSNL Land Line Broadband disconnected and using only device for Lan & Wifi series)

2) Netgear Router ? ( series)

3) Broadband - BSNL optical fiber (Active 40 MB speed)

4) Airtel Broadband (Active 10-25 MB speed) (for standby)

From BSNL optical fiber to DLink and 1) then systems 1 series, 2) Netgear Router system 2 series.

On the other hand if BSNL Optic fiber drops I want immediately airtel to get connected and disconnect If BSNL gets back, because BSNL I am getting good speed.

Hi guys,

When I check the status of Auto-Protect in the AV section of Norton Internet Security it is switched off - so I re-enable it and the icon goes green - about 1 min later a Norton dialog window flashes up then disappears after which the status of Auto Protect has changed back to disabled.

I have run housecall, NAV, stinger etc, etc but nothing is showing up!

I have a directory with many subdirectories of pictures I have taken over the years.

I want to use these pictures as Desktop Backgrounds using the auto-switcher.

It seems the Auto-switcher does not have an option for using subdirectories in this setup.

I found a hint that the "workaround" is to set up a library. However I have more than 50 directories of these pictures.

How is the 'right' way to set up a Desktop Background Autoswitcher with a large (>50) collection of directories with pictures?

A:Using subdirectories with Desktop Auto Switching

Alright I will help!! xD + Rep if it works...

1. Get all the pictures that you have into one folder. (For example on ur desktop)

2. Now, open up personalize.
3. Click on Desktop Background

4. Select Browse
5. Select the folder where I told you to put everything in there.

6. Wallah! All the pics should be automatically selected! Change the time interval it takes for the pictures to switch, and Click Save Changes...

Hope this helps!!!

Hi have 2 monitors hooked up to my tower running Windows 10: a normal size computer monitor (1280 x 1024) and a 4k monitor (set to 3840 x 2160; any higher and I get bugs).

Let's say I have a window open in my normal size computer monitor, and I click and drag into my 4k monitor. The window or folder that I drag MAGNIFIES when it halfway transitions to the 4k monitor. Annoying! (The whole reason I got a 4k monitor is to take advantage of the increased screen real estate). I don't even know what to call this 'feature' (auto-magnify?) - it's different than the windows-+ magnify feature (within the already magnified 4k monitor, I can windows-+ magnify), so no idea how to turn off this auto-magnify feature.

And then, let's say I take a window or folder from my 4k monitor and attempt to drag it to my normal size computer monitor. The window STAYS HUGE and won't fit my normal monitor until I click and drag a corner of the window until it is completely within the normal monitor, and THEN it shrinks back down.

I have a Windows 8.1 machine with a Sound Blaster ZX sound card. I also have a G930 headset that needed to be replaced. I just got my new G930 and was able to set it up fine. The software is installed and both it and the sound card have the latest drivers and Windows is completely up to date. When I plug in the dongle and turn on my headset, though, it doesn't automatically switch to output sound from the headphones. The only way I can get it to do this is by opening the sound options in the control panel and making the headset the default audio output device. This wasn't necessary before the headset malfunctioned and I needed to send it back for repairs, which was also before I upgraded from 8 to 8.1, it would switch to the headset as the primary output device as soon as I plugged the dongle in and switched the headset on.

Any ideas why it isn't doing this any more and how to get that behavior back. Does 8.1 have some issue with support of USB headsets that 8 didn't? Right now I have to constantly switch my default output device between my speakers and headphones depending on what I'm using and this shouldn't be necessary. I've also tried completely uninstalling my Logitech software and drivers and reinstalling them. No luck so far.

A:Computer not auto-switching to G930 headset.

You should be able to just leave the headset set at default and save/apply settings. Then when finished with the headset, unplug and your PC should set itself to speakers settings as default once headset is unplug. My headset is setup the same way, works perfectly for me.

To answer your question; it could be the difference between 8/8.1 as to why it's happening with your headset. Same for my 8.1 setup.

I would like to completely disable auto run / auto play in Windows Media Player 12 on Windows 7, and I cannot find a way to do so. I've searched the web endlessly, and there are lots of suggestions, but nothing works. I have disabled every type of auto run / auto play I can find, but if Windows Media Player is open and I insert a flash drive, CD, or DVD, whatever I'm playing is interrupted by what was inserted even if it's not media. Just a plain, blank flash drive does this.

Has anyone else been able to figure this out?

I have Word 2002, SP3, for Windows Office XP Pro.

My problem is I want to permanently turn OFF the autocorrect options (all of them: correct initial capitals, correct first letters of days, etc etc, autoformat, as well as auto text and auto type).

Yes, I have unchecked all the boxes in Tools > Autocorrect Options, the problem is I have to painstakingly go though all the boxes every time I open Word and uncheck them. My setups are not remembered.

I can't figure out how to make these options stay set this way.

I've tried installing the Office Resource Kit and setting a system policy (though I am the only user on this PC), but no success.

I had to rebuild my system a month ago -- before that, I never had any problems, Word seemed to remember exactly my preferred set up and saved autocorrect options etc to the normal template.

I checked the normal template and it is in Doc Settings folder where it should be.

I searched the forums and Word help but can't seem to find any advice, mainly because most people usually run these options and they only wish to modify the instances where they apply, rather than permanently disable them.

Please help! Much appreciated! Thanks!

You need to check Control Panel, Power Options. (screenshot)

Note the tabs. In this dialog you set your options and they are set for the Power Scheme shown. In Laptops, there are usually 2 schemes listed, one for AC powered and a separate for Battery powered.

Desktop OR AC powered Laptop, the only thing you MAY want to turn off is your Monitor.

For eg.. normal speakers device for my personal account and then have my multichannel device (profire 2626) set as default for my other user account 4 studio work.

Atm, if i change it on one account it changes on the other account which is annoying and i'd just like to set default device for each account so i don't have to do this.

Hi, Let me assume that a bios supervisor password is already set.I wonder how to change the Bios settings to a configuration which is suitable for Windows 10. (e.g. TPM 2.0/PTT enabled, UEFI enabled, Secure Boot enabled,  CSM disabled, Device Guard enabled, etc.)The change should be done with no user interaction at the system side. Therefore we are looking for a script or tool. So far I could find some pieces, e.g. that enabling "Secure Boot" using WMI will activate ?UEFI Only? mode in Bios, at least for ThinkPads; or the use of SRSETUPWIN to activate TPM2.0. But here the complication starts. The switching can only be done when the TPM 1.2 is not owned or active. I discovered that with powershell there should be options to reset the TPM, but I am not the programming guy and that is why my efforts were not successful. What I am missing is some kind of guide from Lenovo on how to achieve the challenges that will show up with a migration from Windows 7 to 10 in an enterprise environment. Some explaining scripts or guidelines which can be followed on implementing in e.g. SCCM. Hope you can offer some clues. Thanks in advance.

I have a freshly loaded Windows 10 installation on an Elitebook 840 G3. I have enabled LAN/WAN switching in BIOS and need the WIFI to turn off or go into airplane mode when docked or an ethernet cable is plugged in. What is happening is when the computer connects to a wireless network and gets an IP address and is then docked or plug into a LAN with an ethernet cable it retains the IP address from the wireless network. It also gets an IP address from the LAN network leaving me with two active IP addresses. This is not supposed to happen with LAN/WAN switching enabled. It should cut over to the LAN and drop the wireless connection. In Windows 7 this was not the case. It would release the wireless IP address. Just an annoying problem. I usually have two IE windows open. Does switching from windows ME to windows XP cause you to lose all you data including programs, music, videos anything like that?

A:Switching to WINDOWS XP

Hi, if you were to use the Windows XP Upgrade then technically, "no" however knowing Windows ME, it'd all go wrong and you'd lose everything. What i'd suggest (as I suspect the others will) is to backup everything, format the hard disk, and install Windows XP from fresh. What most of us seem to do is have a 2nd hard disk with all our data on, the you can just unplug it when you make major changes and you know all your data is safe, maybe something to think about?

Well i wouldn't be expecting Windows 7 to solve all of your future problems. It will be an improvement over Vista that is for sure. I would look at the manufacturer's website for the different devices and see if they have Windows 7 drivers yet.

I didn't have any hardware problems, and actually i don't know anybody who is using it that has.

I have an HP notebook that supports Windows Vista and XP. But it appears not Windows 7. Is that possible?
I like the new features and enhancements of Windows 7 so I'd like to upgrade. Do you think I can?
This notebook is designed for Windows Vista, and actually, Vista runs pretty nice on it, I just want 7 because of the new and enhanced features.

Is it possible?

The model is HP Compaq 6720s.
HP says Windows 7 is not supported on this model and probably wouldn't perform well. (they say only Vista and XP are supported)
this notebook is designed for Windows Vista and came with it
I thought all computers DESIGNED for Vista could run 7
compatibility reports looks OK
on HP's driver page, only Vista and XP drivers are offered
most Vista drivers for this model seem to work on 7
but some do not (SATA controller, graphics), we need to find drivers for those

Hi all,

My TECRA S11-114 was shipped with a Windows 7 Pro 32bits installed. I'd like to switch to 64bits, but I'm at loss at how to do this.

Things I tried:
- restoration to factory settings: doesn't offer the choice between the two versions
- restoration from a recovery DVD I created through the Toshiba Recovery Utility: same result

Things I have:
- recovery DVD created through the Toshiba Recovery Utility
- recovery DVD for XP Pro, shipped with the computer

Any tips would be highly appreciated! Thanks!

A:TECRA S11 - Switching from Windows 7 32bits to Windows 7 64 bits: How to?

I think this notebook was preinstalled just with the Win 7 32bit OS and you get additional Win XP DVD in order to install Win XP (if required)

From my knowledge, Toshiba delivers the own notebooks with different images and some models are preinstalled with Win 7 32bit and 64bit OS and some are preinstalled only with 32bit.

Therefore I suppose you have just Win 32bit OS and you will need to purchase 64bit Win 7 if you want to use this?

I bought this PC yesterday, specifically to play flight simulator 2004 and/or FSX. Both installed OK but when I run them after about 10 seconds they both minimize to desktop. They don't crash; I can reopen them but they do the same thing. I ran FS9 in safe mode; it didn't minimize but instead automatically paused in the same intervals.
Moreover, whenever I type for longer than a few seconds like I am now, the curser disappears like I have switched windows and I have to reclick this window to type again. This is also very irritating and confusing. It's as if windows is constantly trying to return to the desktop. It also happens on Word and hotmail, anything that involves typing.
I have checked what background programs I'm running and can't see any.
All help appreciated, thanks.

I have an HP Pavilion laptop that came with Windows 8 pre-installed. I upgraded it to Windows 8.1 a few months after purchase.

Early last year I installed Windows 10 Preview during the beta period and am still running the preview version, slow ring.

I would like to clean install Windows 10 Release version (before the free upgrade perion ends) and am wondering if it will work with the Windows 8 Key stored in the HP Bios, or is that key invalidated by the Windows 8.1 upgrade? Can I retrieve my Windows 8 or 8.1 key somehow?

Just trying to clarify how to proceed and be able to activate the Windows 10 Release. (I recently installed Windows 10 on my desktop PC, and just used my Windows 8.1 key that had been installed on that desktop system during the clean install of 10, and that worked perfectly.)

Thanks for any info.

There are two users, A & B. If A (or B) keeps a program running & switches user to B (A) & B (A) starts new program, monitor "hangs" (goes black) but CPU keeps running. Have to switch off at plug, switch back on after 30 seconds & ok but can only have porgrams running for one user at a time.

Then today, if a program is running on A (or B), and not actively used for sometime (goes through screensaver to wallpaper to black), when clicking on left mouse button, user has switched from A to B (or B to A). then try to log off B (or A) to return to A (or B) and once again monitor "hangs". Have to switch off again. Help!

Dear all,
Recentley I have a situation whereby I open a new window, say another program and this happens?
The new window stays behind the previous window. Clicking on the new window does not bring that as the active window, stays behind. In order to access the window I have to minimize the old window first.
I can't think what I've done if anything?

Hey guys.

I realise there is another SSD thread here but I don't believe it is appropriate to myself.

I just bought myself a new SSD which I would like to install 7 onto to use as my boot drive. therefore, i need to clear the Windows install from the HDD that I already have.

What is the process for doing this? Do I just pop in the SSD, install windows onto that and then format my HDD afterwards?

Will I need to make changes in my BIOS settings?

A:Switching windows install from HDD to SSD

Hello jamsandwich, welcome to Seven forums!

Have a look at the tutorial at the link below, I would do this to the HDD first so you will have no issues when Windows 7 needs to boot from the SSD, if you don't then it'll end up as a dual boot which is a pain to remove later.
Just be advised make backups of any data on the HDD first as this will over-write any data on the HDD and it will be lost.
You can do the "clean all" and when it finishes you can go straight to the clean install to finish up.

Hello, I want to enable LAN/WLAN switching in our company. We have mutliple sites with local internet breakout which are connected to an Access Point where clients can connect to.  We have several issues with notebooks connected to LAN & WLAN at the same time. I thought I could tackle this issue with the lan/wlan switching feature in the BIOS. I tested this on a Windows7 laptop and this works perfect. I enabled this feature for 3 testusers all having a recent HP elitebook running Windows10. I received feedback from these users this LAN/WLAN Switching isn't working. They are still able to connect to wireless when the cable is inserted.I suspect this is because of the Windows 10 OS. Anyone having similar issues? I would love to use this built-in bios feature instead of using a 3rd party application to solve this issue.

A:LAN/WLAN Switching in Windows 10

Hi. I'm having the same issue. We are currently testing Windows 10 in our organization, but I cannot find a way to get LAN/WLAN switching working. The setting is enabled in BIOS, and it works like a charm in Windows 7. According to this article, http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c03707130Windows 8 and 8.1 has a built-in feature which delays the switching between LAN/WLAN with 40 seconds in order to not interrupt file transfers or other processes. Unfortunately this is not the subject in Windows 10. On my laptops the switching never happens on Windows 10. I have tested this on several HP laptops. (Elitebook 8560P, Elitebook 850 G1, Elitebook 850 G2, ProBook 640 G2) We have also seen a lot of user issues due to the fact that they are connected to both LAN and WLAN at the same time. I though that maybe installingthe HP Connection Manager would solve the issue, but it seems that the HP Connection Manager is not possible to install on Windows 10. Is there any plans for fixing this, HP? Have someone found a workaround (eg. 3rd party software)?

Hey guys, AbhiKap55 here

So I've always been a Mac user, and now I'm thinking of switching to a Sony Vaio laptop running win8

I don't do a lot of heavy gaming but I do play Minecraft. I looked at the specs of that laptop, it was Core i5 processor at 1.8/2.7 GHz 4gb ram and nvidia GeForce graphics card dedicated with 2gb. Will these specs be enough to run Minecraft without any lag? Also, why did it say 1.8/2.7 GHz? Which one is it? I don't think turbo boost raises it that much

Thanks! I need a quick reply from win8 or Sony vaio users!

A:Switching to a Windows 8 machine?

The 1.8/2.7 GHz thing relates to Intel Turbo Boost. The processor will run at 1.8 GHz unless the operating system requests that it runs at 2.7, so if you perform a task that's particularly demanding the "turbo mode" will kick in. It's a feature of modern Intel CPUs.

I can't say with 100% certainty, but I'm fairly sure that that laptop would have no problem running Minecraft. It's not the most demanding of games and a dedicated GPU with 2GB of RAM along with the other specs should be more than good enough!

Brillant Gentlemen/women of the Forum,

First, I would like to say this forum ROCKS! Bless your brillant minds.

Second, since my p/c has become totally infected by Spy-Agent.bc, I have given up the fight and want to install a new o/s. Also, in the process of trying to remove this malware I lost the driver (deleted it by accident) for the sound control (little speaker in the task bar) on my computer.

I know one can download this, that, and the other thing, post logs, do scans in safe mode, scan here, scan there, and whatever but, for me, it seems to be a loosing battle.

It has been two long days of my life and I cant deal with it nomo'.

Also, when I bought my p/c on Flee Bay it came with no software, no o/s disk, and the like. I cant find the driver, to fix my sound, online and I have never had a back up disk for my o/s.

I have accumulated programs overtime. I have important documents in MS Works, got pic, got music, you know the deal... and now have this spy ware drama, so my question is:

Yesterday, I scored a new in the box copy of Windows XP. It is the home upgrade version... will I have any issues trying to overwrite Windows 2000 with this new o/s?

My boot gives me a "Your Hard-drive controller is running slaves (children) that require 32-bit mode. This mode is not currently supported. We are shutting down your computer to prevent corruption." blah blah blah.

Does anyone know how to get my computer to support 32-bit mode? I just reconfigured my computer with a clean load of Windows95A after a hard-core viral attack and it's a little behind on its capabilities. Heck, it won't even install DirectX 4.

PS: do invalid page fault errors indicate defective meory hardware? Just curious.

A:Windows 32-bit mode switching

Wont install Dx4? Your computer does have some problems(I have 7.0a). Well, you can y tell me what your video card is, and then I wcan help you switch to 32-bit mode.

As for Q#2, some page fault errors can be from RAM. For example, one guy recieved these error messages once because he had two RAM sockets filled and it caused it.
