I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Punittiwari3353,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

Have you checked it individually with battery and without battery?
Did you check with different power adapter or with different power socket?
Is the CPU fan running with regular speed?
Boot the system into ?Safe mode? and check if the issue persists there also?

Hope this helps. Do post back if the issue persists!

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

A:thinkpad T400 Ram Upgrade

RAM: You need a minimum of PC3-8500 1066MHz DDR3. However faster chips like PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3 or PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 will work fine as well.

If there's little or no difference in price I'd buy the faster memory. The reason is that if I upgrade to a new(er) notebook it's more likely the RAM will work at full speed on that system.

Note also that while you can upgrade to a maximum of 8GB (2x 4GB) with a 32-bit OS like WinXP-32 you won't be able to utilize more than 3GB.

SSD: Any of the drives you've listed will work well.

I honestly have no clue what could have caused this!  I turned it on this morning & it was stuck on the booting screen. It read "ThinkPad" in large letters followed by "To interrupt normal start up, press the blue ThinkVantage button." I waited for about a half hour for it to boot & it never did. I of course pressed the ThinkVantage button & to my dismay...nothing happened. Afterwards, I unplugged it & removed the battery pack. I then plugged it back in & attempted to start it up again. Once again, nothing. I unplugged it again & attached the battery pack. At that point I tried starting it up again and N O T H I N G!  What do I do?!

Hi, I've searched the forums and elsewhere online, and I can't find any real help for this issue. I'm running Win 7, and I have the most up-to-date drivers from the Lenovo site. I have turned on loudness equalization, but it has not helped the problem. This is an across-the-board problem. What I mean by that is, this problem persists regardless of the application, which I happen to be using. For instance, I use Media Player Classic: Home Cinema to watch movies. If the volume is at 0%, as I begin adjusting it upward, the volume level rises. However, as I reach about 70%, the volume stops increasing. There are audio adjustments w/in the application to boost the volume, but they serve to provide minimal effects. Overall, the volume is incredibly low. If you're sitting more than a few feet away from the laptop, it is inaudible. I don't know what else to do, and I was hoping that someone might offer some assistance. Thank you.  Jeff

Now, I suspect that the inverters are fine and I'm wondering about the LCD switch or LCD cable. I suppose I could just buy a cable, but before that, I wanted to take a step back and try to figure out if I'm overlooking anything. I've not been able to find a picture or location of the t400 lcd switch in either the lenovo hardware manual for the t400 or elsewhere online.Hi,I've got a thinkpad t400 with CCFL backlight. I recently replaced a bad LCD (the backlight was working at the time) with a new one. However, while the new screen works, it's backlight did not. I ordered a new inverter and plugged that in - still didn't work. I grabbed the old screen's backlight and tried it with both inverters - did not come on. I then grabbed another laptop I have and plugged in the old screen's backlight - it came on. Plugged in the new screen's backlight (while lcd was still plugged into the thinkpad), it's backlight came on.So, I know both backlights are fine, and suspected I just had a crappy inverter. I got a replacement new inverter and it still doesn't work. Tried new lcd and old backlight with all three again, no dice. Backlights still turn on when connected to spare laptop. So I now suspect the inverters are fine. I noticed that the laptop no longer goes to sleep or hibernation when the lid is closed. I have a thinkpad T400. Couple of months ago the problem started. I could not shut it down it just keep re-booting. I had to press and hold the start button to shut it. Now it won't boot at all. It beeps 1-3-3-1 and just sits there. When I press start button all lights come ON for a while and after only battery , AC and Ready lights stay ON. Here are few things I did so far without any luck: 1. Removed battery and AC adaptor waited few minutes put it back - same problem2. Removed CMOS battery. DIMM cards waited for ten minutes replaced - same problem tried with swapping  DIMM cards - when I put only one card on top slot it says put the card on zero "bottom" position. After placing the Mem card on the bottom slot no thing happens. It beeps again and sit. When I checked in the manual it says either DIMM or System board. I do not know which one is giving me the problem. I just do not want to replace all parts without knowing. Can any body help please or had similar issue and solutions if you managed to solve it. Thank you. Roshni

It all started when I installed Win 7 after a Linux usage for a couple of months. First I thought it was uTorrent that screwed it up so I removed it but it still gave BSODs at least once a day. Haven't had the energy to do anything about it until now so now I'm asking you guys for advice how to get rid of it.
I have activated minidump in Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Setting in Startup and Recovery > Small memory dump (256KB) under System failure.
Got a BSOD a couple of minutes ago but I didn't get a minidump output from it.

Attached the four debug reports I got from SF Diagnostic Tool.

Appreciate any help I can get,

Hi all -I know I am talking about a very old machine but I am hoping there is someone out there that would be willing and able to provide helpful  advice - some background -  in my dire need I purchased a 'refurb' Lenovo Thinkpad T400 from who now turns out to be an unreputable seller - I was silly enough not to worry about recovery disks or even a 30 day warranty - now I am paying dearly for my negligence.  This machine has had issues from day one that I thought I could work my way thru reading forums, Lenovo site etc. but nothing has worked.  My first challenge was trying to just get the right-click on touchpad to produce context menu - I searched and searched and reluctantly loaded 3rd party softwares to no avail.  I gave up on that only to discovered that when I loaded any antimalware program my cursor would not open that program nor would it open any other program on the machine. So I uninstalled the antimalware. So I can't really run to see if I have a virus.  To make a long story short right now NONE of the function keys work nor the THINKVANTAGE.  When I reboot and attempt to go to safe mode, bios utility I get nothing except opening up windows where sometimes the cursor will open a program or not and the trying to open programs from the start menu or the task bar is hit or miss same happens in the start menu and trying to open a browser.  I am running on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and would like to go back to factory settings, but ag... Hi,

I have a T400 which has the following two display adapters:

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series
Mobile Intel(R) 45 Express Chipset Family

After installing Windows 7 and checking device manager, the ATI adapter does show up under the "Display adapters' section, but it has a ! sign on it, and if I click for details, it says:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

I tried downoading and installing this:

Lenovo Support & downloads - ThinkPad Switchable Graphics Driver for Windows Vista 32bit and 64bit - ThinkPad T400, R400, T500, W500

and when I rebooted, it went through some diagnostic tests in a cmd window to finish installation. But when I checked the device manager again, the ATI adapter still says it cannot start.

I also tried this:

ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver

which I got to by selecting W7 32-bit > Mobility Radeon > Mobility Radeon HD 3000 series.

It seemed to install OK, but I got a message which I've gotten with previous attempts, which says:

"The Catalyst Control Center is not supported by the driver version of your enambled graphics adapter. Please update your ATI graphics driver, or enable your ATI adapter using the Displays manager."

I went to the device manager, right-clicked on the ATI adapter and did Update Driver, and it did at first find a better match but said it couldn't be installed with the same error message from above (Code 10). Now, when I try to update the driver again, it says... Read more

First, my t400 would only boot with power cord unplugged. Then it stopped booting altogether. I read to press the power button 10 times and hold it on the tenth time and to unscrew the palm rest to unplug the little battery for 30 seconds. That is the only way I can get it to boot now. I picked up a new regular battery today thinking it might be related but that hasn't solved it. Any ideas?

A:thinkpad t400 wont boot w/o reseting little battery behind palm rest

I looked at it closer and to get it to start i don't press the power button at all. I unplug the power cord and after unplugging the CMOS battery for awhile i just plug the power cord back in and it starts up. The first thing i see as it starts up is an error message about a bad CMOS checksum and then i have to change the date/time in the BIOS or it yells at me to do it. After all that it boots into windows 7. Once it is in windows no matter what i do to change the settings of what the power button does it still doesn't do anything. I can restart it fine but once i shut it down it the CMOS battery needs to be reset to get it going again.

Hello,I have a Thinkpad T400, bought it brand new in 2008, fully optioned with a t9600 processor. I've since then removed the obsolete Vista x64 and replaced it with Win7 x64. Replaced 7200 160gb hdd with Intel 160gb SSD. Upgraded 4GB of RAM to 8GB of RAM. The problem I am having is random overheating. Every once in a while it will just shut down, I've taken a infrared thermometer to the bottom of the unit and measured ~163 F surface temps!!I've had TPFanControl installed since the vista days (my warranty had just expired by then), as I had experienced some overheating issues.  I installed Windows 7 and it seemed to run much cooler...but recently I am having issues again.TPFanControl shows 62C and dropping at the moment (now it's 59C), but it was reading 73C+ before I switched fan control to manual. The fan speed is now at 3422RPM instead of the ~2000RPM it was reading before (at 73C). It seems to run sluggish....I'm sure 70C+ temps aren't normal, right? Compared to my home built six core AMD system, which idles around 35C...About a year ago I took the keyboard off and blew out the dust....seemed to help a little. Also made sure the heat sink screws were tight. My next option seems to be taking the heatsink off and apply some arctic silver paste. Curious to see what others have experienced...This is my first Thinkpad...I was always told they were rock solid. This one has been quite flaky.

Hi all --  Longish post, need help, please read! Recently my T400 has been creating significant heat under load. After combing through a number of T400 heat issue posts I decided it was likely some combination of too much dust and insufficient thermal grease. So, I poured over the hardware maintenance manual (HMM)... I disassembled the system, extracted and cleaned the fan, removed existing thermal grease off the CPU, GPU and Southbridge, reapplied Arctic Silver 5, reinserted the fan and reassembled the system. Everything seemingly worked well. System booted without issue and the temperature difference was noticeable (TPFancontrol said so, anyway). To test the machine I decided to put the system under some significant load -- a few crazy calculations in Excel. It chugged away for about 10 minutes and then... BEEP BEEPrebootFAN ERROR My resposne: FML. But I can deal with a little adversity; so back to the forums and the HMM. All signs pointed to replace fan. And so I did -- ordered a new fan yesterday knowing full well there was no way to restock it because they don't take returns... and the $100 this part cost isn't exactly chump change. (Note, I find it highly unlikely the FAN is worth 1/15 of what my original machine cost me). I digress... A new fan arrived an hour ago (at least the parts counter is efficient) and I replaced the old fan. I'll be frank, I didn't replace the thermal grease -- the new fan assembly had plenty... I re... Read more

A:T400 FAN ERROR

The grease that comes with the fan is fine. It is at least as good as what you buy and it is applied better than you can. My guess is that there is a blown fuse (F4) on the motherboard, but it is hard to diagnose from 3000 miles away. Lenovo does not replace fuses. It requires a good soldering station - not a simple soldering iron. They just swap motherboards. Make sure that the fan spins freely and is plugged in correctly. Antenna wires can get in the way if they are not run properly. If you don't want to fix, I would discuss an exchange, but that should be done through private messages.

Hello, I have recently picked up a used T400, it had no OS installed and I happen to have a copy of windows 7 pro with a key. Will I need to install any drivers or extra software with windows 7 or will everything work fine without drivers? Thanks

A:T400 Drivers...

Hi T400man and welcome to the community,

Once you get the OS installed, run Windows Update and try to not install updates pertaining to hardware drivers.  You'll need Net.Framework 4.0 installed and then you can install TVSU and it will find and install hardware drivers for you.  It's not a good idea to install every driver that it finds all at once, especially if your machine needs a bios update.

If TVSU determines that you need a bios update and you want to install it, install that one by itself.

Regards,
Dave

I tried it without the battery in (but plugged in) and it happened again. I'm not sure what else I can do, because I can't even get the computer to even start up. I would love to have the problem resolved. Thanks in advance for the help.

Try removing both the power and the battery and holding the power switch down for 10-30 seconds. (more is better since I don't remember the exact number).  Put the battery and power back on and try powering it up.  If this doesn't work you can try removing the palmrest and pulling the cmos battery as well.. here's to hoping the first idea works..  Best of luck!

Need guidance on finding drivers for T400 running WinXP.  I know XP is "obsolete" (by virtue of vendors saying so) but the laptop is in fantastic shape and very, very stable.  Just need to undo tweaks that didn't produce the intended effect, so now I'm looking for drivers to get the powermanager, fingerprint reader and PCI simple communications back working.  Lenovo seems to have pulled those from the website.  Following their links leads to a sever error.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So, I am working on building my sister a new laptop, for the task I have picked a Thinkpad T400, I bought this laptop for Ģ40 off ebay and am very happy with the conditions of it, it came with an Intel P8400, 1GB of RAM and no HDD, this is fine as i have ordered a T9900, which it yet to arrive, a 250GB 850 EVO, and i planned to use the 8GB 1333 DDR3 kit out of her old laptop, this consists of two 4GB modules and are 1.35V, now the problem is that the thinkpad will refuse to boot with any of these modules, not even if one is installed, it simply throws the RAM issue post code and does not start up, i am curently running the latest bios available however it is simply not working, sadly it looks like i am going to have to purchase new RAM but I am not sure what to purchase as corsair apparentsly have issues with the T400 and Crucial recommend 1600mhz DDR3L (1.35V) so i am not sure if this will work, could you let me known of known working memory, why is the current memory not working and will the crucial reccomended stuff work?

So I needed my whole hard drive, so I wiped my T400 and did a fresh install of Vista without the bloatware. I downloaded all the drivers, got everything to work, but there's one driver I can't seem to figure out what it is. It's labeled as "Simple PCI Communications Device" - but I already have my ethernet port, wireless, bluetooth, and modem installed and all working. So what other communication device could this be? Moderator note: Type added to subject line for clarity. Itīll help us, to help you. Message Edited by Agotthelf on 19-05-2009 10:20 PM

number65, welcome to the forum, it would be helpful if you could post which T400 you have, even better post the Type and Model Number this will help members to help you. If it ends in CTO please provide some details about the ThinkPad. Please do NOT post your s/n.  Thanks

Hey, As it stands now the old t400 is completely unusable, I dont know anything about it other than the previous owner told me it needed a new hard drive, and the screen does not work. The only thing I know about it is the Product ID:2764CTO. As I've come to understand the CTO designation doesn't help much it simply means Custom to Order. But the first thing I'd like to do is replace the screen and have no way of knowing if it is  a WXGA (1280x800, 98dpi, 185+ nit) orWXGA+ W/LED Backlight (1440x900, 129dpi, 200+ nit) I've looked at the parts list for the t400 2764CTO and it seems there are a number of options to choose from. The screen I have IS fitted with a camera, but I do not know which one of the two to order, + LED backlight 1440x900 or 1280x800? I would also like to upgrade the CPU and place a 128-256 Solid state drive in it(what size will work?); It appears that I can place an Intel Core 2 Duo T9800(2.93Ghz) or T9600(2.8Ghz) but when I called Lenovo to inquire about the compatibility they were less than helpful; saying only that there were two different motherboards for this laptop and that it may or may not work.  I understand this is more work and money than this laptop is worth to most people, but I would like to anyway thanks for any suggestions, I would prefer not to tear it apart before I get the parts I need but it looks as though I may have to, at the very least identify the motherboard.

I am going to do a clean install of win 7 64 bit on my t400.It was my son's issued from college and runs vista. It's always run awful even with ram update last year so I think a clean install is the only way. I have not done a clean install in over a decade and never on a lenovo so I want to make sure I know what I'm doing and have a few questions.1. Are there any issues with this being college issued? I was never able to access as an adminstrator to do updates or certain changes. Will formatting address any potential issues?2.Is there a partition specific to lenovo that must be retained?3.Can I used the download manager to download the drivers?4. Is installing both rescue and recovery(which I don't have currently) and thinkvantage(which I can't currently use) simply a matter of downloading each?Any help is appreciated. thanks

I assume you are going to completely replace what is there, and you don't need personal info, files, etc. I would update the BIOS first with the latest version and bot into the BIOS and hit F9 to load defaults. I would just wipe the disk first. I use something like Active Kill Disk (free). If it is a retail copy, either normal or student, there should be no problem. It is best if you have a version that already includes service pack 1. If you don't have SP1, you can have problems if you have already upgraded the Hard Drive to a larger, advanced format drive. I would install ThinkVantage System Update to do the Lenovo updates.

I've been using this machine for typing and browsing only. No graphics intensive stuff. And it doesn't have an Nvidia or AMD/ATI graphics chip. It just went dark. No response after taking out batt and draining the static charge. These machines last for years, I don't know why this would happen to mine.

Hello! I've googled my question first but tbh I didn't really get what to look for for a fitting RAM for the Lenovo T400, I only saw that some of the RAM was not accepted by the Laptop and the Laptop didn't boot then, so I don't want to risk too much, because I don't feel like I will be able to solve the problem with the RAM afterwards.  Can anyone tell me if this RAM is compatible with my Lenovo T400 and explain me what to look at for compatibility with the RAM Module: https://www.willhaben.at/iad/kaufen-und-verkaufen/d/ram-module-2x-4gb-1600mhz-pc3-12800s-183801765/If it is compatible then how much should I pay for it at most?

Hi all, I've been searching the forums about this topic, but I haven't found anything specific for my case: Symptoms: After turning on the laptop, the screen works fine for a few seconds and then it goes dark. The LCD display is working correclty, but with no backlight (still can see the screen if I use an external light source like a flashlight. All indicator lights (wifi, power, battery) work correctly.Image is displayed correctly if connected to external monitor.Problem happens in windows and BIOS (rules out driver issue).Realized that if I turn down the brightness all the way down and then press fn + F7 or if I close and open the lid, the screen would light up back again. If I turn the birghtness up, the screen goes dark again, but if I repeat step 4 it still works. After a few minutes of operating at minimun brightness, I can turn it all the way up and it won't go dark.Yesterday the backlight finally went out for good and not working at all.I'm trying to figure out if it's an issue with the inverter, mobo fuse or cable. Maybe someone here has seen these specific symptoms before and could lend me some knowledge and save me some time in debugging this issue. Thanks

A:T400 no screen backlight

Assuming you have a CCFL screen (with an inverter), the inverter is most likely.  Some T400 have CCFL, some have LED.  With LED panel, it is probably bad panel.

Hello,  I'm having an issue on my T400 (Windows 7, 32 bit) where the laptop shows that it is plugged in but not charging.  I've tried the usual steps with removing the battery from device manager and rebooting, but it doesn't seem to work.  I've also tried using a different power supply and I still get the same result.  I also get the beep when I plug/unplug the power.    The computer will run with just AC power connected to it and it does seem to run on the battery.  I didn't run it too much because the battery is at about 12%.  Will a new battery fix the issue?  I got the laptop as they were getting rid of it at work, the battery has been working fine for almost a year and I just noticed the issue the other day.

Hi all, I have a T400 on which I have put a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate. It will not play sound through the speakers but I can play through the headphone jack just fine. I have tried reinstalling the drivers several times and it still won't work. The "press up and down volume buttons" fix that seemed to work for others doesn't work for me. The mute button on the top left of the laptop seems to work correctly, as do the volume keys and when looking at the volume mixer when sound is playing, the green bar moves up and down, but there is still no sound. So it's a hardware problem right? No. My friend also has a T400 as well which came prebuilt and the sound works fine. So, I swapped my hard drive into his laptop and still didn't get sound. I then swapped his hard drive into my laptop and the sound worked fine, so it's something peculiar to the build. I assumed it might have been a botched install, but I reinstalled Windows again and downloaded all the drivers and still have no sound! Help please!

Hello, some time ago I have great problems with Windows 8.* on my old T400. On this forums I found that there is no support for my laptop anymore so I finally after maybe 1.5 year returned back to Windows 7. Now, there is  Windows 10 and I want to ask if it will run ok or not. I know, that laptop is not supported yet but maybe Windows 10 is quite different than 8.1.Is there somebody who have same or simillar laptop running Windows 10 on it successfully? Here is my old question about Win 8.1 - https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T400-Windows-8-1-support-stop/td-p/18623...

Just tried 2 days ago. Not sucessful. Second boot OK and allow you to go to Win 10. But you cannot uninstall program. Then when restarted, it cannot reboot. This time set restore point but no use and force to go back to win 7. Last time without setting restore point, the only option was to reload the win 10 to allow reboot but then it wipped out all other non-win apps and files including all lenovo driver apps.

Hi all, I have a T400 from early '09. It's been a fantastic laptop, though I now only use it for when I travel. Over the last year it's been running very hot, especially when playing games. I've been using a portable fan to cool it down, didn't think about getting it checked out because I didn't use it very often. Today it froze up and I force shut it down by holding the power key. When it rebooted it ran a disk check (I had a sleep and didn't see the results) and when it loaded windows it was running extremely slowly. After a bit of experimenting I worked out the wifi and switchable graphics drivers weren't working. I was able to get it to a usable state by disabling the discrete graphics in the bios and booting into safe mode. I was going to reinstll the drivers. While they were downloading I tried to re-enable the discrete graphics (in the bios) and booted. However before I got to the boot manager screen, I got a BSOD (c000021a). I turned the laptop off, but it would not start again. None of the lights on the laptop are working, even though it is plugged in. The only things I changed in the bios were the switchable graphics (which I changed back to the default setting) and the "beep" on hibernation. I have no idea if the battery has any charge, it should be at 100% as it was plugged in the entire time. I noticed the laptop was running very hot while I was working with it. Our tech guy seems to think the motherboard may have overheated and "mel... Read more

A:T400 - Won't Power On, No Lights

Try the 10-30 routine.Remove battery and disconnect from AC. Now press the ON button 11 times and on the 11th press hold it in the ON position for 30 seconds. Attach AC and see if it starts. This issue has plagued old Thinkpads forever. I have not found the true cause other than my speculation of age related.

I have an aging but still really awesome T400 that I'm looking into upgrading. My question is, what can be done? My current plans involve adding an SSD and updating the RAM, the jury seems to be out on how much the unit can take though? Some people say 16GB, I'd atleast want 8GB. Processor could be upgraded? I need to check what I'm currently running. I do need a new battery in the unit, but the available batteries all seem after market. Are there any other updates I should consider? Cheers.
