Preferred Solution: Installing on brand new HDD

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Installing on brand new HDD

have you checked your connectors for your hardware and try and format the hdd again. when the windows screen loads and nothing happens then so i understand it is the services. if may be your cd drive as sometimes they can cause that problem

So here's the story. One of our staff knocked a ThinkCentre A2U onto the floor.  It appears that the HDD is damaged beyond repair - we can't get past the BIOS screen. Easy enough to buy a new HDD, but how to install Windows 7?  We have the Product Key, but Microsoft rejected it saying that we needed to contact the manufacturer - Lenovo. So here we are.  DigitalRiver is no help, it just refers back to Microsoft. Any suggestions, guys?

I am new to Windows 10, never used it... Here is my question...

I have a new SSD and a genuine Windows 7 Pro key, which I have not used. Do I have to install windows 7 with this key on my new SSD first and then upgrade and then clean install windows 10 or is there a way to do a clean install of Windows 10 and then activate using the windows 7 key.

I suspect the answer will be NO but I thought I would ask...

Thanx for the replies...

A:Installing on a brand new SSD with a genuine Win 7 Pro key...?

No need to install 7. Download 10 Pro from Tech Bench, put it on a USB with Rufus, clean install Windows 10 and put in your 7 Pro key when asked.

Absolutely there is no need to install 7 first.

My motherboard being a MSI Z170a sli pl. Will The 2400 mhz stick work with the 3200mhz? If so how would i go about installing it? Do i dual link it, or single? Go into bios set timings with the 3200mhz?voltage?
Or will putting in the Stick automatically adjust the to what it needs to be?

Hi all,

A few days ago, I bought a GALAX Gamer 120GB SSD and a Toshiba 2TB 7200RPM HDD from a PC parts store. I installed them in my tower's case and connected them up. Then, I attempted to install Windows 8.1 Core onto the SSD from a bootable USB drive I had made using Microsoft's Installation Media Creation Tool. The installer promptly error'd. I attempted a few more times, to no avail. I contact MS's answer desk, and they couldn't help, so I left it for the night and went to bed. The next day, I decide that I will attempt to install Windows onto the HDD and then clone it over. Of course, it installed perfectly fine on the HDD. Using both Windows' System Image Backup/Restore tool and a myriad of others, I still could not get an installation on the SSD. I ran a surface test on the SSD which turned up fine. I tried again tonight with the same USB drive to install Windows onto the SSD, again, it error'd, I contacted the MS Answer Desk again, they had me change a BIOS settings, and then take my ram cards out and clean them with an eraser. Neither of those worked, and MS support suggested I contact a local tech as it is a hardware issue.

Do you guys have any thoughts on what I should do? Feel free to PM or reply asking for more info.

I just bought a new laptop yesterday, so there's no bugs or anything on it. All I've done is check my gmail, install an the antivirus program Best Buy gave me, and try to install some of my audio recording software (Adobe Audition and Guitar Port).
And that is where my problem starts.
My old computer had windows xp on it, and it ran my software just fine.
Now with this brand new computer, it won't install.
I get just past the part where you agree with all their license stuff,
and then suddenly it tells me, "Setup has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly." And then it just closes the program.
I bought this software in 2007, so I hope it isn't "too old" for Windows 7 or something...

All this techie stuff is Latin to me. So bear with me. I took Spanish in high school.

1. I have a Dell Inspiron 6400/E1505. I bought it used 4 years ago.
2. I am installing a brand new hard drive, fresh out of the box.
3. The drive that died on me was a Seagate Momentus 7200.1, 100GB, 7200 RPM, Firmware 8.04
4. I went online to best buy and micro center, but am in the dark regarding the driver interface. Since the laptop is pretty much dead in the water, how can I determine the it? I'll need to know that before I walk up to the kid in the store, right?
5. As soon as you tell me what I need to buy, I'll install it and then have some questions about installing Windows XP.

Thanks in advance,

A:Installing a brand new hard drive, what's next?

Hey Patrick,

Yes you check what the problem is in your lap before buying the HDD. So,
Does the laptop turns on without the hard disk? If so a message should appear there is no boot device.
If the lap works fine without the hard disk well you should buy the new one.
If the lap is pretty much dead well it is probably dead from every circuit on it.

I just recieved my new Dell dimernsion 4600 and wanted to install an Optorite DVD+/-RW that I just purchased. The burner reads and writes in both cd and DVD. My new Dell came only with a CD ROM drive. I am wanting to know if there would be an advantage to keeping the new Dell CD-ROM drive in my computer or should I just install the DVD burner in its place.

THanks for your assistance. I am definitely new at installing hardware so any tips about the installation process would be very helpful

A:installing DVD burner on my brand new dell

If the CDROM is on the secondary IDE cable, install the DVDRW on the same cable as the CDROM. Make the DVDRW master and the CDROM slave.

This way you can do on the fly CD to CD copying.

At the end of the year you can replace the CDROM with one of those Dual layer DVD 16x drives that are supposed to be coming out.

There are 2 basic types of hard drive that most people will want to install.

They are 1 - Pata, also called ide and ata. Easy to recognise as they have a large 40pin socket and jumper settings.

And 2 - Sata, both sata 1 and 2 are set up in the same way. They are easy to recognise as they don't have a 40 way socket but have a 4 way instead.

There are also scsi hard drives but i doubt may people will be using them so i will not be dealing with them in this post!!

Pata - Pata's will connect via a 40 way data cable that has 2 plugs on it excluding the one that plugs into the mobo.

It is VERY VERY important to get the jumper settings correct or THEY WILL NOT WORK!!!!

There are 3 basic jumper settings, cable select, master, and slave.
The easiest way to set them up is to use cable select. The mobo itself will then assign master and slave as it sees fit. Usually it will set the drive on the end plug as master and the other one as a slave.

If you are running more than 1 pata drive on the same cable then you must insure they are both set to cable select or that 1 is set to master and 1 is set to slave. Having both set to master WILL NOT WORK, and having both set to slave WILL NOT WORK.

Once that is set correctly most mobo's will be happy and boot fine, if yours doesn't then you will need to check the bois settings. The instructions for doing this will be in your mobo manual!!!

Sata - Only 1 device is catered for per cable so ther... Read more

One minor correction to avoid potential confusion. It's really a 40 pin, 80 wire cable. Most will know what you mean, however.

First of all, can I say that I am somewhat computer illiterate, but I am determined.

I recently purchased a new desktop computer, the specs are:

Intel Core i7 2700K CPU - 3.5GHz
Gigabyte / Asus Z68 Motherboard
16GB DDR3-1600MHz RAM
1TB SATA3 7200RPM Hard Disk
BluRay Combo Drive(LG)
2 x ATI HD6970 2GB PCI-e in Crossfire configuration
Antec Nine Hundred Gaming Case
Thermaltake Tough Power XT 875W PSU

Now it comes time to install windows 7 professional, so I purchase a copy of the OEM version (because I'm stingy).

When I put the DVD in the drive it boots straight away and it comes up with a black screen that says "Windows is loading files........." . The bar on the screen loads and then it says "Starting Windows", after that a blue screen with some leaves and what looks like a very small bird appears in what I am assuming is meant to be the start of the windows 7 professional setup screen, however nothing comes up and after a while (5 minutes or so) my computer restarts and it's groundhog day (has been doing it for the last 3 hours).

Can anyone help me?

A few weeks ago I decided to get a new computer for gaming, but not knowing much in the field of hardware I let my cousin (way better on the subject) basically pick out the parts, let me order them, and he'd put it together.

The parts came a few days ago and Ive had the computer built for awhile, we ordered Vista home premium with it (32 bit edition) and I still have yet to get it installing correctly.

So basically the first night I start installing it, everything seems to be going fine but its taking a LONG time (around 7 hours), at 1 AM it still shows no signs of being done and I did not want to leave it on overnight, so I turned it off.

Turned it on the next morning, saying it didnt finish and would need to resintall, tried it again except this time it stays at 0% on the second step ("Expaning Files")

I mean, after like an hour or 2, its still at 0%, but the computer has not actually FROZEN, just hanging or whatever.

Ok, no big deal, I use a reformating program, completely wipe the HD and try again.

Its not freezing anymore! huzzah! So I wait for 7 MORE long hours, watching it slowly install, it restarts a few times, theres some points where its just a black screen with the mouse cursor for like 15 minutes, I get the "Vista is preparing for its first start" message, it restarts, says its completeing the installation, then I get an error saying something along the lines of "Windows setup failed to install Vista on this hardware"... A:Huge issues installing Vista on a brand new PC

It's possible that you got bad memory or a bad drive. Start with the memory. If you have multiple sticks, remove them one at a time and try to install. If you want faster results, use a memory test. You can use the one on the Vista DVD or:

MemScope (Floppy and CD images.)
Microsoft Memory Test (floppy or CD ISO image)

Then I'd suspect some misconfiguration of the drive. Check BIOS settings and look on the drive for a jumper (even SATA).

I've installed a few Vistas and the number 7 was not ever involved, even on old machines.

Hi I recently built a system, bought all the parts on newegg, put it all together, and everything starts up fine, seems really smooth. Unfortunately when I try to install vista, it BSOD's on me before I can even get to any startup screen. It goes to the windows loading files part, then on the next teal blue screen it bsod's. I bought a new sound system along with all the other components and it included a sub that warns to keep it away from PC's etc. Unfortunately they put the boxes right next to each other outside my door, is there any chance it could have fried both my HD's? I've tried everything I can think of, installing with just 1 HD (tried both), tried with 1 stick of ram (tried both), I just can't think of what else it could be. I'm pretty sure everything is compatible or else I wouldn't even get this far, but I'll list my system.

Also tried to install windows xp as a last resort, I get a bsod during installation on that (right at the end, finalizing installation step) and eventually I even got it installed, but then it bsod right at the end. When I restarted I even got to a mainscreen kinda, where it told me it was changing my resolution, it changed it then I got an error about Windows media player. Tried repairing the install and it said couldn't copy file wmp.dll along with about 30 other files. I'm just at a loss and really frustrated here. Anyway, here is the system.

A:BSOD installing Vista on a brand new comp

Hi -

I am concerned about the formatting of the drive(s).

Re-format the HDD with KillDisk then try the Vista installation again. Leave XP out of this for now.

KillDisk - http://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm

Make bootable KillDisk ISO CD w/ ImgBurn -
ImgBurn - http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

Be sure to change the BIOS firing order so the DVD is 1st.

If you get another BSOD, get at least the 1st 2 sets of numbers. Any digits to the right of the "0x" that are zeroes are assumed. So, if the code is

0x0000008e -- this is equal to 0x8e or 8e

Try to get the "8e" or whatever the number is from the 1st and 2nd set of numbers of the bugcheck

Is that an actual XP Pro CD, and is it XP original or XP SP1?

If you've installed a new hard drive, it needs to be formatted before you can install XP Pro in it.

The XP Pro CD does all the work - if that's what you have.

A:Lenovo IdeaCentre 510-15ABR - installing an SSD for brand

A SSD is no different from a regular spinning drive to the computer , and per the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your model, you can add a M.2 SSD storage drive (see page 34 of Hardware maintenance manual) in addition to the drive you already have if it is a spinner  in the storage bay, so there is no reason to go with a hybrid, and I believe one additional storage bay is available on that model as well that can accept an addition 3.5" drive, or even a 2.5" HDD or SSD drive (with 3.5"-2.5" adapter) as shown on page 37. Cheers,

I am trying to install Spore and in the middle of the installation it gives me a CRC Error! I think it's either the CDROM Drive or a bad spot on the hardisk because other new games will install fine. No scratches on disk and a used CDROM?

HELP!! This is frustrating!
Thank you!

A:CRC Erorr message installing brand new Game

CRC is a mean of verifying the integrity of the data. The content of the data that's written on the drive is compared to a reference data. Could be an error on the CD, with the CD drive or on the hard drive but an overheating cpu or a failing ram stick can also cause read/write errors.

See if you can install the game on another computer to check whether it's the CD or your computer that's in cause. If it installs fine on another computer come back and report here.

Good day to all. Can someone please assist me, advance thanks..

I bought a PC with MSI mainboard, N430GT, with 2-2GB Kingston KVR1333D3N9/2G installed RAM (=4GB), 500GB HDD.
Everything works smooth until I read that I could upgrade memory up to 16GB max. BTW my OS is Win7 64 Ultimate.

So I decided first to buy and install 2pcs-4GB Kingston KVR1333D3N9/4G (=8GB), for a few days everything works fine as expected, I shut it down one night and the following day restarting my PC, it turned BLUE with messages., and then on as often as every 5 minutes or less it turns BSOD.

I asked my friends and told me to do a clean OS reinstallation and I did that, but the problem persisted as if nothing changed.

So I did a memory diagnostic and It noted that possible hardware problem.

I did immediately changed and swap back my original 2pcs-2GB memory, and surprisingly until this thread writing it is ok.

My mainboard supports dual channel (two slots only) and I want to know how could I checked which one of the two 4GB memory modules is not working, or is it safe to install only one 4GB memory to checked which of the two is working or both are not working?

Any immediate response is of great help. thanks.

A:BSOD after upgrading &/or installing new memory module on brand new PC

The Kingston Value Ram (KVR) is known to be marginal and not even work in some PC's. The regular Kingston memory is usually OK but none of the techies that I know will use or recommend the KVR.

Check the MSI (or whoever the motherboard vendor is) site for your motherboard model (you didn't list it so I can't check for your). The N430GT is your video card, not the motherboard. Most motherboard vendors list compatible memory for their motherboards. Best to use memory that has been certified for the specific motherboard.

I don't even have a little wireless bar down in the right hand corner. when i try to connect to a network in network and sharing center, it wants me to plug in an ethernet cable. But i want wireless.. Also in the side panel of Network and sharing center, i don't even have the option for wireless.. i have Change adapter settings, and Change advanced sharing settings.

I try to set up a new connection or network and Connect to the internet, the only way it asks me to connect is by broadband(PPPoE). If i try set up a new network it asks me to choose the wireless router or access point i want to configure, might take up to 90 seconds for networks to appear.. but nothing pops up.

I just purchased a microsoft zune mp4 player (brown 30gb). I have loaded all my music (that's compatible) and my video files, and a few pictures. The 2nd day I was on a road trip and it ran out of battery that night, and I left it alone I had no computer access to charge it. The next morning I open the zune software to charge it (today), and I wanted to load a song onto it and it said error, no more space. How is this possible if I had 21 gigs left the last night and i only have 1200 songs, 10 pics, and 2-3 movies, 10 music videos. I looked online and also other people had the same problem, but it didn't show how to solve it. And the microsoft website just said the inbox should've been enlarged, and that didn't make any sense but I did it anyway, no results. I just spent 200 bucks on something I was pretty hyped about, now look where it put me, microsoft always lets me down from the x64OS, to MFSX, and to this.

Does anybody know what to do?

I need some opinions, I'm gonna get new hardware for my comp. Who do you think makes the best:

Hard Drive?
Video Card?

This is what I'm thinking of at the moment, some things I already have, but I'm not very name brand saavy.

RAM - 2 Kingston ValueRAM 184 Pin 256MB DDR PC-3200 - $70

Motherboard - ASUS "A7N8X-VM/400" nForce2 IGP Motherboard (MicroATX) - $80

Processor - AMD Athlon XP 2700+, 333MHz FSB, 256K Cache Processor - $110

Hard Drives - 2 40GB Seagate Barracudas (Already Have) - $90

Video Card - Rosewill ATI RADEON 9200SE Video Card, 64MB DDR, 64-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP - $30
Onboard Video - Integrated GeForce4 MX GPU - $0
Need a reccomendation for the video please.

Sound - Not interested in a card. Onboard - Realtek ALC650 6-channel CODEC - $0

Case - CODEGEN Black/Silver Micro ATX Mid-Tower Case with Front Panel USB 2.0 ports w/codogen 300W PS - $20

Monitor - Samsung 17" Flatscreen (already have) - $130

Total Cost: (all from Newegg)
w/o vid card - $280
w/ vid card - $310
Total Cost for Whole Setup - $530

One big question I have is concerning the ValueRAM. Is it dependable? Also is getting a MicroATX mobo anything away from a traditional ATX? Any constructive criticism is welcome.

I am a bit tired of the terrible support HP provides (which is practicaly none).  Recently, I just had a simple question about needing to find out what kind of graphics card I should buy and HP wanted to charge me for the answere before selling me a GPU.  To make a long story short, I am looking for another brand of computer.  Any suggestions?

Dell Dimension 4400
1.7ghz P4
768mb PC2100 RAM
40gb WD Caviar
160gb Maxtor, both on a SIIG Ultra ATA 133 card
Sound Blaster 5.1 Value
MSI GeForce 4 Ti4200 64mb
Antec Cyclone blower in open PCI slot
400 watt Coolermaster psu (to be installed)

I'm trying to decide which new video card to buy and think that I'm going to go with a 9800 Pro 128mb because I'm not sure I'll get that much bang for the buck from a 9800 Pro 256mb and can't use the full capability of a 6800 due to mb limitations (i.e. 4X AGP). Moreover, I may want to go with PCI Express in a new setup.

(1) What brand of 9800 Pro is best? On newegg, they had an MSI with a huge heatsink, but it's now not listed. They also have a nice Sapphire that comes with a Zalman heatpipe on it.

(2) VGA cooling. If I get a card without additional cooling, is the Arctic VGA Silencer (v3) a good bet? What about a Zalman heatpipe? Speeze dual fan case cooler next to the video card? Other ideas?

(3) What about case cooling? I could put in a cooler in an open 5.25 bay, but don't know anything about modding my Dell case.

A lot of questions I know, but that's what this site's about. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hey guys,

My question is probably dumb, but I've never really thought of it before and wanted some feedback before I buy.

Basically, say I have brand A ram and want to add some more, but it's from brand B. That won't matter, will it (both being DDR 3, of course)?

I don't see why different brands wouldn't play nice together, but I never say never >.>

A:Different brand RAM

This depends on how you plan to use your computer. As a general rule with newer motherboards, you should at least use the same timings and type memory. Brand can be different, although I always use identical RAM in my builds

I was searching through newegg's extensive case fan selection and found that
there were over a hundred, 120mm fans, and twenty or more brands.
Which brands are better, more reliable/durable? What should I expect to pay: $5 - $25 for a 100 or 120mm fan?
From what I have heard, brands like Rosewill, Antec, Thermaltake, and Cooler Master are good, am I correct?

A:Which fan brand to buy?

Depends what your expectations are.
A few things to take into consideration are:
Bearing type
Sleeve bearing -cheap, noisy and gets more noisy very quickly as it ages and the lubricant dries out. Not recommended for horizonal use.
Rifle bearing- same deal as sleeve except that the spiral grooves (rifling) on the bearing surface allow the lube to be pumped over the whole bearing surface so it can be mounted horizontally.
Ball bearing- Better than sleeve/rifle. Expect to pay a bit more than the these also. relatively quiet for most of it's lifetime but can age prematurely (as do sleeve/rifle) with excessive dust buildup.
Fluid (sometimes marketed as Fluid Dynamic or Enter) bearing- sealed bearing-pretty much silent, long service life, fairly expensive.
Magnetic bearing uses two magnets repelling each other instead of a physical contact area within the bearing. The only noise is that of air flowing over the fan blades. very long service life.

In addition any of these fans can have PWM (pulse width modulation) -variable speed control that can be altered automatically via software. Characterised by having a four-pin connection -either fan header, or molex.

The most important value tends to be the actual volume of air a particular fan can move (how much pressure it generates) since a lot of fans will state a number in cfm (cubic feet/min) or m/hr (cubic meters/hour) which in actuality bears no relation to it's ability. Note the testing methods employed he... Read more

i am doing alot of multimdia work atm and the programs have been eating up my memory and making stuff a bit slow, so im thinking about gettimg more. I currently have 2GB (2x1GB) kingston 800 ram. My motherboard supports 4 slots so i have 2 left, and as i run 32bit i can only get 4GB in total.

My first question is should i be getting the same brand ram or doesn't really matter the brand of the ram i get, as long as they are the right speeds?

Second should i be getting a single 2GB stick or should i be going 2X1GB sticks? or don't they really make a difference?

A:buy the same brand ram as you already have?

Yea, stick to the same brand if you can,
its more important to stick to the speeds/timings

and if you have four slots rather stick to the 1gig sticks.
so if they are all DDR2 800 sticks then rather try get the same type of ram as your other sticks.

i also do alot of digital works and the memory issue is always a problem

Hi guys,

I ordered a new Mobo bundle which arrived yesterday evening. With the bundle came;

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Processor OC 3.50GHz
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-880GM-D2H AMD 880G (Socket AM3) Micro-ATX DDR3 Motherboard
RAM: 4GB Mushkin Silverline #996768 (2x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz 9-9-9-24
HSF: Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 High Performance CPU Cooler
PSU: 650W Corsair TX650 V2 ATX2.3 (Purchased Seperately)

The bundle is prebuilt, with thermal paste and OC'd by the supplier. However, since swapping out my old Mobo and the new Mobo bundle, my idle temp is 40c, I tried Prime 95 Torture and it hit 79c in seconds.. Not cool! (Pun Intended)

I've taken the following steps;

Cleaned out all Case Fans and set them to Maximum speed.
Reseated the HSF once.
Removed Overclock ("Load Optimized Defaults") which hit 59c on Prime 95, only 3c off the max recommended, so, still not happy.
Set Vcore to Auto/lowered Vcore
** Only thing I haven't tried is reapplying some new TIM as I've not got any. Will order some tomorrow and try it.

Temperature showing height of 79c after Prime 95
Prime 95 running after "Loading Optimized Defaults" in bios

I can feel plenty of cool air from all case vents and have also tried without the side panel on at all. All other hardware (Hitachi HDD, HD5750) are all around 28c, 32-33c on a hot day.

Any other suggestion other than reapplying TIM (Will order some tomorrow).

Dear Sir,
I have an XP operating system now, but there are a few problems with it, and I dont have the brand disk, although it is real. So I thought I would buy a real XP and place it in my computer and at least I then would have the disk with me.

Can you share how I would take out of the old XP software and place in the brand new one? I have never did this before. I am a newbie, This is all very new for me.

Thank you so very much for your time on this matter, RM

PS does office front page come with the brand new XP?

I have a nearly brand new quad core beast that after a two week holiday has decided it hates me.

It will start up, but the monitors are getting no signal, nor is the keyboard or mouse. It literally starts up, but nothing. Fan on video card works and i can hear HD spool but thats it.

I spoke to the guy who sold it to me (private contractor) who is now away for 5 WEEKS in India! He says it could be ram - but I am not sure how / why this would be!

This is my main PC which I use a lot and need for my masters. The home lan problem is at my mum's house and is less important (as laptops work).

Really would love to buy a beer for whoever solves this!
