Preferred Solution: windows fax and scan problem

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This operating system has Windows Fax and Scan built in .

I thought i set up this feature correctly but increasingly I am unable to receive faxes from reputable sources such as Booking.com .

This does not happen all of the time but sufficiently often to be a serious problem.

I have checked all the settings which are in order although I am unsure about but the compatability setting.

In windows fax and scan properties under the compatability tab :-

a) Run this program in compatabilty mode for is ticked.
b) The compability mode is set to Windows 7.

Are the above settings correct ?

If not what should they be ?

If they correct what is the cause of my problem.

I run this program as an administrator - do I need any additional permissions ?

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

A:Windows 7 fax and scan problem

a) Run this program in compatabilty mode for is ticked.
b) The compability mode is set to Windows 7

Any built-in Windows 7 application runs natively in Windows 7 and does not require a compatibility mode to be set for it.
Untick "Run this program in compatibility mode for...", then click 'OK'.

Windows Fax & Scan program will not recognize my scanner when I try to scan a document to fax. I just installed an external modem to send faxes using the Windows Fax & Scan program, which BTW worked fine when I typed a document and faxed it. If I try to use the Scan feature instead, I get an error window telling me that no scanner was detected and to check my connections. My scanner, which is a Canon 8400F with the Windows 7 64-Bit drivers, works fine on it's own. I am having no luck making it function with the Windows Fax & Scan program. Any help or comments will be appreciated. Thanks

Never Mind. Found a great Fax Software program Online. Downloaded it, installed it and it worked great. No need for MS's piece of junk program.

Epson Photo RX680

I recently upgraded my OS from Vista to Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit). I ran a system recovery and fully updated Vista before upgrading into Windows 7. Once I tried to install ?Epson Scan? software (I downloaded off from Epson website), the following messages came out:

- "could not copy files. check the setup disk, then run the setup again"
- "C:\Users\BENJAM~1\AppData\Local\Temp\\setup.exe"

My only option at this point was to click ?ok?
Then a 2nd message came out:

- "an error occured during setup. restart your computer, then run setup again"

I ended up not able to install the ?Epson Scan? at all! I tried installing the scanner driver first before installing the printer driver and before plug in the printer to the laptop. It didn?t work. I tried the ?troubleshoot compatibility? feature on the installation file and chose to install the application under Vista verson. It didn?t work. I also copied the Epson Scan application off from the installation CD onto desktop and installed it from there by using troubleshoot compatibility feature. Still didn?t work at all. I wrote to Epson tech support, all they told me to do was to download the correct files at the support page for Windows 7 and they also replied me with this:

- From your email it seems like you are having issue with the installation of the Epson Scan and Twain Driver for the Stylus Photo RX680 on Windows 7. This seems to be a system related iss... Read more

A:installation problem with epson scan onto Windows 7

I have an RX680 and everything is working in Win 7.

I would suggest uninstalling the 680 and all the Epson software, including the printer drivers and the scan program. Physically disconnect the 680 from the PC then restart the PC. After Windows 7 starts, do a new install starting with the printer drivers and ONLY connect the 680 to the PC when the Epson install program tells you (if you connect it first either the install will fail or incorrect drivers can be installed by Windows). After you have the printer drivers installed and the 680 has been detected and installed, THEN install the scanner drivers.

This morning I ran a full virus scan with the AVAST virus program on my system and then ran a spybot check as well. Nothing turned up except an error in a backup file.

My computer runs fine, except I can not run a scan disk check or defrag the two hard drive partitions.

When I try to run a scan disc, I get the message:

"Windows unable to complete the disk check."

When I try to defrag, I get the mesage:

"Disk fragmenter could not start."

I tried booting to safe mode and I get the same messages when I try to run both programs in the safe mode.

I have run chkdsk from the command line and it runs ok, but when I use the /f and /r parameters it gives me the usual locked drive message and asks if I would like the volume checked on the next start up, wich I indicate "yes"

On the next startup it starts to run chkdsk momentarily, then stops and boots to the windows screen?

I have removed my antivirus program and and unchecked and turned off sytem restore on the hard drives - but it does nothing.

Any idea why I can't scan or defrag my hard drive? Everything else works fine and I am sure it had something to do with the virus scan..........

Thanks for any help guys!

While using Windows Defender Offline (WDO) scans show that it detects some sort of virus. The problem is at the end of scan it doesn't allow me to review or remove the virus. I need Help.

A:Windows defender offline scan results problem

Couple of things that can adversely affect how Windows Defender Offline performs.
1. It's absolutely necessary that the bootable media is created on a malware-free computer. Otherwise, the malware could prevent your PC from downloading the program, burning it correctly to the bootable media, or prevent it from operating as intended.
2. Do not re-use a previously created a CD or DVD.

This tutorial gives some more info about creating and using the bootable WDO media.

Recently I was trying to setup Windows Fax & Scan and was making setting changes to WFS and STUPIDLY locked even myself (administrator) out of being able to make certain changes without getting told I don't have permission to make those changes.

I did this by changing a permission setting that I thought was to lock out all other users from making changes to my settings but now even has me locked out.

After I open WFS, I try to open Fax settings under Tools only to get the following: You don't have security permissions to complete this operation. Contact your fax administrator for more information.

When I OK that, I get: Access is denied. & (Access is denied. (5, 11000001080)) under details.

It is now useless and I've gotten nowhere myself trying to correct my problem.

I went into Programs and Features and tried to uninstall WFS only to find I could only turn off the feature.

Tried that anyway and turned it back on hoping it would need to reinstall itself from the DVD but it just reactivated with the same problem still there.

I'd rather not print out everthing just so I can fax it.

Does anyone know how to correct this so I can use this feature?

A:Vista Ultimate - Windows Fax & Scan Permission Problem

You'll have to burrow through the registry to locate the keys that are affected - then take ownership of them in order to change the permissions back. Have you tried a System Restore to back before you made the changes? That should be the easiest fix.

Hey all.
I was running a full scan on my Win8 system using Defender.  After 15 minutes, scan was three-quarters completed with no problems, so  I left the computer for five minutes.  When I returned, Defender had switched over to a Quick Scan in order to finish up.
No threats found, either by Defender or by MBam, which I ran afterwards.  But is it unusual for Defender to switch from Full to Quick scan mid-operations?

A:Windows Defender Full Scan Switches Over To Quick Scan

I never heard of that happening before so I'm not sure how it occurred. There are three types of scans offered by Windows 8/10 Defender and most other anti-virus/anti-malware programs:Quick Scan only checks the areas of your computer most likely to contain malware...the most prevalent and common places where malware typically hides. The length of time for performing a Quick scan will vary but it generally takes about 15-30 minutes so they can be performed daily.Full Scan is much more comprehensive since it scans the entire hard drive (all folders/files) which can number in the thousands. The length of time for performing a Full scan will also vary but because it is so comprehensive, this type of scan can take several hours. Most Full Scans can be scheduled to run late at night when not using the computer so you can perform a weekly scan without having to monitor it.Custom Scan allows the user to select any files and folders on the hard drive to be scanned. In most cases when performing routine security checks, only a Quick Scan is needed since it checks the areas of your computer most likely to contain malware...the most prevalent and common places where malware typically hides. A Full scan is generally recommended only for heavily infected systems.

We are using Windows Fax and Scan (Version 6.1 Build 7601: Service Pack 1) -- its the version included with our Windows 7 Enterprise 32 bit client OS

I just installed a scanner at a sleep lab , scanner works flawlessly. There are multiple sleep techs that will log into the one computer with the scanner (so in short multiple user profiles) and scan patient RXs.  Problem is the Sleep Manager wants
the scans to automatically save to a central location so no matter what tech logs in their scans will save to the same location as everyone else.

The key is AUTOMATIC saving.

So that's the background info -- the heart of the issue ... it appears a feature that Windows Fax and Scan offers is not working.

If you go into Fax and Scan there's an option in tools -> Scan Routing.  If you read about the feature its supposed to AUTOMATICALLY save to the network folder indicated, its not doing that.

So I check the box for "save to network folder" (don't know the exact wording)

(I'm using xxx's because I don't want to publically announced the real share location) \\xxx\xxxxx\xxxxx\Neuromuscular.

That is 100% a valid and working share name -- been in use for years many people save to it....Windows Fax and Scan says "Not valid Network Share"

So someone said just use \\server\share

Ok I create a folder on my computer let's call it Computer1 and name it sharefolder. I share it and give "everyone" read/write acc... Read more

I am looking for help with Vista and Windows 7 Fax and Scan application.

I am working on an implementation of the wsd scan protocol on a scanner.

I have a documentation for the wsd scan protocol for the scanner side, but I do not have any documentation for the windows side, i.e., for the Vista/Windows 7 Fax and Scan application.

In particular, I would like to know whether it is possible to change the timeout value for the RetrieveImage message. This message times out if no scan data is received in 30secs.
However, for higher resolutions scanner calibration can take longer than 30secs. For this reason I am not able to scan and retrieve the image at 1200dpi.

Other problems I have:

1. Often Windows Fax and Scan freezes. I have to reboot the PC.
2. Often Stop/Start of the WIA service is not relible. I have to reboot the PC.
4. WSD Scan discovery seems to be unrelible. Often when trying to scan a document using Fax and Scan I get a message saying that there is no scanner configured. However, at sturtup the scanner always sends a correct discovery message.

I will be thankful for any help.

A:Windows shuts down when I run AVG scan or MBAM scan

Correction: I can now run AVG Free Edition all the way through, because the "scan log was repaired", however, it doesn't find any viruses, as I think it should.Malwarebytes' AntiMalware still won't update, so I found and downloaded the latest mbam-rules.exe, which contained the latest update and I installed it. I then tried to perform a scan, it again quit halfway through and restarted my computer.I downloaded SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition and it found:Adware.Tracking Cookie (35 detected items)Rootkit.Mailer/Gen (3 detected items)Trojan.Fake-Alert/Trace (1 detected item)Unclassified.Unknown Origin (1 detected item)I quarantined/removed all of these.MBAM still won't update, but I haven't yet tried a new scan.EDIT: MBAM still won't update, a new scan ran all the way through and found 95 infected objects. 90 Registry Keys, 3 Registry Items, and 2 Files Infected. I can now open regedit!I don't think I have too much of a problem anymore, aside from the inability to update MBAM, there aren't any other apparent problems, though I'm afraid I'm still infected in some way or another. :/ I'm attaching my MBAM log.I believe you can delete this thread, unless somebody can recommend me doing something else to further protect my system. My McAfee Real-Time Scan will not remain enabled. When I try to run either Quick Scan or Full Scan, an error message comes up, telling me to return to the McAfee Internet Security Home and to try to run the scan again.

I have followed their instructions for re-enabling the Real-Time Scan to the best of my abilities, by trying to restart the McShield Service, and by running the oas-disabled-fix.cmd utility that they instructed me to download. The oas-disabled-fix.cmd utility will not run.

I have contacted McAfee and they have told me that it is a problem with Windows Update. I have contacted Microsoft and told them that as well, but they seem to be trying to rule out any other possible cause, than what McAfee says is the actual cause of the problem, thereby dragging this out even longer.

Microsoft is supposed to be getting back to me again tomorrow, but any other help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

Almost every time I do quick scan and got nothing and I think it is good. However, I just read online, it says that when quick scan does not find anything then you do deep scan. It confuses me, since it means I should do deep scan all the time. ?

A:quick scan vs deep scan/full scan ( antivirus )

the 1000$ question is
which anti-virus
ON windows defender and malwarebytes and many others only a quick scan is necessary
The converse of what you have read is usually the case eg. You do a quick scan and only if that finds something should you then need to follow it with a full scan
For instance a threat scan on Malwarebytes paid for edition or the scan on the free version will scan up to 99% of the system
A full scan also scans the system restore points and other unusual places to detect, or at least try to detect, all possible traces of infection.
As I said it depends on the AV and to some extent the OS which I presume is not Windows 2000 as indeed commented on by my colleague Cookiegal in another of your topics
Also, it appears you're running Windows 7 and if you don't still have your Windows 2000 computer you should visit your profile and change that information so that it's current which makes it easier to help you in some casesClick to expand...

1. I removed My Web Search and My Fun Web Products(I don't remember installing) but I still had popups.

2. I uninstalled Windows Live Plus Sponsor but still had popups, so I uninstalled Windows Live Plus too but I still had popups!

3. I downloaded NoLop(secretly), followed some instructions and saved the Log file(it fixed C:\WINDOWS\tasks\B3DDA048910A51EC.job) but I STILL had popups!

4. I downloaded the new HijackThis and ran a scan saved the Log file and had it analyzed at HijackThis.de and found that this program called SearchSettings.exe is "nasty" soooo I uninstalled it (yes, it kept changing my homepage and search engine!) then I ran another HijackThis scan and I dunno if it was because I didn't restart my computer but it picked up this:
(it said it was "nasty")
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.exe.imgfarm.com/images/noc...iInitialSetup1 .0.0.15-3.cab

and this it had a "?" sign no info..
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MATH DOES FIRST MODE] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\live 64 math does\open bike.exe

5. I followed this sites forum posting rules(did the Panda thing) and I noted it picked up that... Read more

Whilst I have Norton Internet Security on my PC I took advantage of a free scan from Kaspersky. The scan lasted over three hours and revealed the following Infected File:
C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\78DE7A73.htm
The infection was said to be Exploit.HTML.IE Slice

As it appeared to have been already quarantined by Norton I opened my Norton Quarantine file but it was empty. Using Windows Explorer I found the file. My problem now is what to do with it. Should I just delete it or leave it where it is?. Also what happens when I uninstall Norton as I have already bought a new version of Norton Internet Security which I was going to install in a couple of weeks time. Thanks. Roger

Hello,Reading around web and many sites recommended downloading/running HijackThis. Did so 2 days ago. Scan showed 48 entries though all greek to me, lol. This site also came recommended for such. Decipering them that is.Followed post "Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help". Was hoping the logs done could be looked at to see if all is ok. Computer runs fine, scans with Norton NIS 2011, Malwarebytes, SuperAntispyware and Ad-Aware always come up clean, but being a novice I figured maybe something sneaked in.The only part I guess I didn't need to do was the GMER scan. Didn't realize I had 64-bit. Because Internet Explorer has the 32-bit browser I thought I needed it (GMER).ThanksFred

A:problem with Combofix after scan

You should not be using Combofix unless instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert. It is a powerful tool intended by its creator to be "used under the guidance and supervision of an expert", NOT for private use. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer. If you used the Combofix Tutorial, it plainly states in the introduction:"Due to the power of this tool it is strongly advised that you do not attempt to act upon any of the information displayed by ComboFix without supervision from someone who has been properly trained. If you do so, it may lead to problems with the normal functionality of your computer."and "the use of ComboFix is done at your own risk".Unfortunately, you have found this out the hard way.I'm not an expert in repairing the damage done by Combofix, someone else will have to help you with that.

Hi all: I am using XP and IE7. Computer slowing down and a lot of lag when gaming. I have be watching the task manager and noticed that the syssvcnt.exe (associated with the Cox virus scan package) seems to be bleeding off my memory. I watch the CPU and Memory Usage readings and My available memory numbers bleed down as the memory usage numbers for the syssvcnt.exe increase. The gauge that shows the page file usage also increases as long as I have the virus scan enabled. Starts at approx. 270k after reboot and climbs to over 1gig after a few hours. Is this normal? I also notice a cpu usage spike that jumps to 60 or 70 percent about every 5 minutes. This happens with or without the virus scan enabled. I think this causes a lot of the lag I'm getting while gaming. What could be causing that? I am attaching a HijackThis log. Hope you can help.

Greetings Oh Helpful Sages

I have a new problem, or an old problem that hasn't gone away. When I run Adaware I am always getting 5 items and 4 will delete. The 5th won't. I have tried to manually delete it and it won't let me. Can anyone give a suggestion? The file is:

Anyone have a clue what this is or why it won't delete?
It's the only item that is consistantly coming up now. I'm guessing that it is the reason that my puter is running so slow, but I don't know for sure. Like I said, it's the only item that keeps re-appearing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My scanner powers up OK, but when I click on scan on my computer tile I get a message TO GET STARTED CONNECT A SCANNER. I recently up graded to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1. I also had the same message on 8.1. I have replaced the cable between the scanner and the Dell Insperon 3847 computer. When i go onto a HP site and search for hardware connected, other devices are recognized but not the scanner. I tried to find a site where I could possibly download a newer driver but have not been able to find one that conforms with windows 10. What to do?

A:HP Scan Jet G 3010 problem

Your HP Scanjet G3010 Photo Scanner has a full-feature software driver package for Windows XP and Vista and 7, but not for Windows 8 or 8.1. or 10.
It has a basic software driver package for Windows XP and Vista and 7 and 8 and 8 .1, but it has no software driver package for Windows 10.
You might consider making use of the links in the "Knowledge base options" column and see if any of them are of any help to you.

One of the common problems with upgrading from Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 is having devices or hardware that no longer work or work properly.
You may need to purchase a more modern and newer HP print/scan/copy device.

i work on a pc shop and main server in one of the branches has a big problem, when i try to have it scanned using avg and other av programs i get a bsod, i was planning on a registry cleaner but i wanted to get your guys opinion

A:(problem 1)bsod when i scan 1 of my pc

Hello,Concerning the registry cleaner question: Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:? Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable. The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.? Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required ... Read more

My laptop is a COMPAQ Presario V4000 running Windows XP. Here is my problem.

Yesterday, I uninstalled my McAfee Virus protection, as my subscription expired a little while ago, and installed AVG Free before I decide which Virus protection I would like to go with next.

After installing AVG, the program gave me several warnings of potentional threat files, however it stated thal of the files were win32 or system32/Patched files which are needed to run either Windows or AVG and of course wouldn't let me delete them.

I then ran a complete computer scan, and the computer came up with 5 files, some of which were again these system32 files. AVG decided to go ahead and remove these 'threats' and told me I needed to restart to complete the scan.

Upon restarting, my laptop runs the COMPAQ screen, and shows the Intel Centrino screen, and goes either straight to the Windows loading screen, after which the screen goes blank and the monitor turns off (but the computer itself stays on) OR it goes to a message stating the following:

"We apologize for the iconvenience, but Windows did no start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

Press the scan button on the printer

Following these direction gets me nowhere, now I can't scan from the printer to my laptop nor can I scan from my laptop using the Productivity Studio.

Anybody have an idea what is going on??

A:Lexmark 7675 scan problem

I have the same problem since upgrading to Windows 64 bit. I had downloaded and run the appropriate 64 bit software from Lexmark. After talking to tech support at Lexmark, I re-ran the install software using the repair option. I was then able to scan but only until I rebooted the computer, then back to square 1

I am getting rather tired of Microsoft always putting out new operating systems without worrying about compatability. I have a 64 bit operating system, but almosty all of the software I use installs as x86.

Hi dsn9875,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

What version of Norton Internet Security are you using? If you have a valid subscription to version 2006, 2007 or 2008, you are entitled to a free update to Norton Internet Security 2009.

To update to the 2009 version, make note of your current Activation Key and then using Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher only, click on the link below to visit the Norton Update Center.

Norton Update Center

Have you made sure that all of the Microsoft patches for Windows and Office have been applied? Run Windows Update just to make sure you are not missing any important updates.

Secondly, please let me know if you installed Windows XP SP3 while Norton was installed. There is the possibility that the SP3 installation may have caused some issues. Symantec does have a tool to resolve these issues if this is the case.

I would suggest that you first launch Norton Internet Security, run LiveUpdate and then restart your computer in Windows Safe Mode. Next,... Read more
