Windows Explorer crashes and restarts randomly

Q: Windows Explorer crashes and restarts randomly

Hi,

I have Windows 8.1 running on my Acer Aspire V3-772G. Windows explorer crashes randomly, and restarts instantly. Various solutions on the internet are for problems where explorer crashes due to a specific task such as accessing some programs. In my case, it is just random and occurs once in a while. Help me out!

Thanks in advance!

Preferred Solution: Windows Explorer crashes and restarts randomly

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

A:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

This happened recently after my sister downloaded something from the internet, and when I opened the folder to transfer it to her flash drive, a notification popped up telling me that, "Windows Explorer has crashed," and then it restarts (not the computer, just explorer. It sort of "refreshes" the desktop), then loads, and then crashes again.

I can still use my laptop normally from adjacent accounts, and when I tried deleting the file (the source of all of this, I'm assuming) it says that I need the permission of my main account, even though this account that I am currently using is also and administrator.

Can someone give me a little help? If there is none to be found I can use this side account for a while until something can be done, but it is incredibly inconvenient.

I am using Windows 7 currently.

Hey guys, I'm going on my 10th hour of trouble shooting here.

Started my PC this morning, went and opened Steam, then windows explorer crashed without a message (Task bar disappeared) and locked up my whole PC for about 5 seconds before the BSOD. Rebooted to install "WhoCrashed" to read the minidump. During this process, I went through about 6 other crashes of the same nature. It doesn't seem to be dependent on load, however, because it'll happen just sitting idle on the desktop too.

On the most recent crash, I noticed that around the same time explorer crashed, my Razer keyboard and mouse both died out, leaving me no control.

I just got a new graphics card (NVIDEA Geforce GTX 960 4GB) 2 weeks ago and it was all fine up until now, so I'm not sure if it's related. We put in a Coolermaster CPU cooler at the same time, new thermal paste, etc. and all temperatures are normal (about 90 degrees F, same as always). None of my temps are off from what they've been for the last 2 years, and I don't think I've ever had a BSOD on this custom PC.

Updated NVIDEA drivers from safe mode, started looking into Motherboard updates, but not applying any because I can't even tell what I have already. Everything is fine and dandy in safe mode.

So, please, for the love of all things holy, someone help me out here... I'm good with PC's but I'm at my witt's end here. Attached you should find the proper log and an image from Speccy. Had to take it with my phone beca... Read more

I have a problem that started yesterday. Every 30 seconds Windows Explorer (not the browser) crashes, then restarts. I run Xmarks within FireFox, I thought this was the problem because Xmarks as of yesterday asks me every 40 seconds if I want to sync my bookmarks, if I choose cancel, Windows Explorer will crash then restart.

When Firefox is closed, Explorer continues to crash and restart, almost every 30-35 seconds. I have Windows 8.1 up to date, with all the latest updates, FireFox is up to date. As of writting this post, Windows Explorer has crashed and restarted (5) times.

This issue has been driving me nuts for the past few months and I've found no solution as yet.

Hi. Today morning I started my PC and just after the start up Windows Explorer crashed and restarted and then did (and does) the same every 10-15 seconds. I googled the problem and did following steps (not in the same order as below) which didn't resolve the issue:

- restarted few times and switched off PC completely;
- tried to fix registry with Vit Registry Fix;
- did SFC /SCANNOW and it finished with information that some issues couldn't be fixed;
- ran Malwerbytes with no malware found;
- did a full Kaspersky Internet Security scan with no viruses found;
- did a clean boot (all non-windows services were not used) and it still crashed;
- did a diagnostic start up (so only basic windows services were used) and it helped;
- I wanted to do a system restore but Windows doesn't have data on any restores, meaning I probably haven't started the service (doesn't it make it automatically?);

Other info:
- system works fine in Safe Mode and diagnostic start up, thus eliminating issue with external applications;
- when in normal mode and crashing I looked at processes appearing and disappearing and found out that at the crash process the file dllhost.exe disappears then and shortly after appears back (it may or may not be relevant);
- I didn't do any major updates yesterday (only updated Steam platform and installed one new game);
- I can't do perfmon /report as in Safe mode it doesn't display anything and in normal mode I don't have enough time to start the applicati... Read more

A:Windows explorer crashes (and restarts) on system start-up.

Just an update - based on my experience with "fixing" the system, I've decided to back up the data and make a fresh installation (no point in loosing more time on trying to resolve the issue but just spend the time on new system and at least enjoy a faster Windows for some time). Funny though that a year ago I had to do the same due to some dll corrupt file (it was much worse then). I really love Microsoft!

P.S. Thanks for reading this thread, if you think you may add something (so in the future if someone looks for info on how to fix it) feel free to add some advice.

A:Windows explorer crashes randomly , sometimes more then once

That is a common problem since XP, and I have yet to see it resolved. When explorer crashes, system icons tend to disappear and do not come back. The question is: Why is explorer crashing? It must be doing so frequently enough to cause you frustration with this problem, so we should try to determine why explorer is crashing and resolve that issue.

Sometimes, when I click START> All Programs > Accessories, many of the icons of built-in Windows programs like Paint, Calculator, etc. show up as white boxes.

When I try to click on Paint, for example, nothing happens. A few moments later, I would get a message saying - Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working.

I have installed Windows 7 on four different tablet PCs.

I've had this problem on two Dell Latitude XTs and a HP 2710p. My HP tx1000 has been operating perfectly for over a month now.

Hi everyone,

Windows Explorer seems to crash randomly with me (it does not happen with every computer session but seems to happen when I want to open a window) and has to restart; then, after a few seconds, it crashes again and has to restart yet again (seems to happen when I try opening the window again after Explorer restarts) Have got the latest Windows updates and Service Pack 1. The issue started after installing the recommended Microsoft updates described over here:
6 new updates 4/26/11
After the updates had been successfully installed, I was asked to reboot my computer. After the reboot,when I wanted to open a window, Explorer crashed (30th April logs; see below).

Since my computer is in German, the crash logs are also in German. I have translated them into English, so if a few things sound a bit odd, it's because it's my own translation, though I was able to recall a few of the English terms thanks to my other laptop, which is in English (but has no problems at all with Explorer...)

I've inserted all the crash logs below - two from 30th April (two crashes which happened after each other) and three from today (13th May, also happened right after reach other). I've separated the logs with broken lines for viewing convenience. Any idea what's causing explorer to crash and how to fix the problem?

I also recall that when I booted the computer yesterday, HP Update popped up in the system tray asking me to search for HP updates (well, obviously...) and an Adobe window was also waiting for me, announcing that there was an update for Flash Player. Don't know if these update notifications might have had anything to do with Explorer crashing when I tried to open the Control Panel (I think that that was the first window I wanted to open). What I am absolutely sure about is that I had not opened Firefox.
Which makes me wonder if the Explorer crashes from April and May are related to each other...or not.

Hello,

I just came back after a few days out, and for some reason my PC cashed several times today.
So my PC will restart (more like crash) after I log-in, it is random, it can crash in a few seconds or a few minutes.

Last time I used my PC, the "5,6,7" keyboard buttons didn't work (Logitech G15), maybe that could help.
( I usually shutdown my PC every time I go to sleep or go out).

I know that the computer crashes because, when I boot I get a screen telling me windows did not shut down correctly and I can use windows normally or with safe mode.

PC specs:
Windows 7 32 bit
nVidia 260 GTX
4 g"b ddr2 ram
Intel E8500 Duo 3.16 GHz
Antivirus:
Avast free + malwarebytes free

I've tried to find solutions for the problem and even:
- Tried to open case, and tighten cables.
- Cool the system down by opening it and leaving it to rest
But I had no luck yet, so I came here.

Help would be highly appreciated :)

Product code is 10B60023AU
It's around 3 months old, Started crashing every now and then (no blue screen of death) just on one moment and off the next.
Crashes started to get a lot more frequent (like 4 times an hour - sometimes).
Isolation tests, different monitors etc (made no difference)
So - did complete software re-image. (made no difference)
It's fully up to date and checked with the solution centre (detailed tests - no faults found)

So - took it in for warranty service, diagnosed graphics card fault and replaced the motherboard. Great I think.
That was yesterday, this morning (same thing - 4 crashes in less than an hour)

So - unless I drag this all the way back into the city for another 3 day holiday does anyone have an ideas ? Any known issues with these machines ?

TIA

I personally have a M73 SFF, and it's been solid as a rock (other than a problem with the Lenovo-supplied graphics driver, fixed by installing the driver downloaded from Intel), I don't know of any other issues.

When you say it's " just on one moment and off the next."   Do you mean it powers off by itself?

More information would be helpful (please read the 'help us to help you' sticky thread.)

Hey,

My computer randomly crashes at pretty much random times while it's on. I got it from my brother, and when I got it it was doing the same thing. Then I reformatted it and installed Windows XP, and it still does it. It's so weird because it's totally unpredictable when it happens. Every couple times I start up my computer, it will happen right away, before I even get the XP welcome screen. It shows some weird green screen with a bunch of squares, and just freezes at that. All I can do is restart it to get it going again. Another common time is when I'm in a game or something. It'll start up fine, but then when I click something like Play Game or Options it'll just go to a black screen and restart. I really have no idea what it could be. I'm going to take a picture of the screen the next time that green screen comes up. Oh and I tried installing SpeedFan and it says the temperatures are fine so I don't think that's it. My specs are:

AMD Athlon 64 3400+
1 GB RAM
GeForce 5700 LE 256 MB
Asus K8V-SE Deluxe motherboard

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hey, how's it going?
I've had my computer for almost a year to a year and a half already and I've probably upgraded to Windows 7 for about 5 or 6 months so far.
I've been very impressed with what Microsoft has done with Windows 7 but I have a problem that really frustrates me.
Every time I'm on my computer watching a video, listening to music etc. it would randomly crash out of nowhere. It would just restart then goes to the page asking if I would like to run Windows on Safe modes. I'd be lucky if my computer doesn't crash while I type this.
I've tried running on safe mode but it still crashes as well.
I've had my computer reformatted about a week or two ago and it still crashes.
I have noticed that before of around the time of my computer going on the fritz there was a message that popped up on the Windows Action Center. Something to do about the away mode system.(See the attached picture.) I'm not sure if this is causing it but it's worth a shot to solve. So can you guys help me out with solving this particular problem or the fact my computer keeps crashing every so often.
I'm not really sure what is causing this but I hope I can get some possible solutions.
Thanks in advance guys.
Sorry for the long read.

A:Computer Randomly Restarts/Crashes

If you've attempted a clean installation, there's a high chance that you have a hardware issue, however it could still be a software/driver conflict if you're using the same software.

If you receive a Blue Screen of Death, you should upload your error logs so that the more technically inclined can analyze them.

My computer keeps randomly restarting. It doesn't matter if I'm browsing the Internet or playing games it will just happen randomly. It crashes most frequently during the boot up after the initial crash. system repair will give me a few extra minutes but it eventually crashes again. When rebooting it will turn off and on and ONE of my case fans which is connected to my motherboard will flicker on and off. i have other fans connected to the board that do not do this.
I've never posted here so I'm not sure what I should include in this post but here are my parts.

Motherboard: gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 AM3+ 970 R
Video Card: Radeon HD 7770 1G
Power Supply: Corsair HX750 750W
CPU: AMD Phenom II 3.4G AM3 R
Memory: 4Gx2 Vengeance
Hard Drive: 1TB SATA 6.0 32M
Windows 7 Home edition 64bit

Things I've done:
-booted in safe mode (still crashed and restarted)
-system restore (still crashed but less frequent)
-checked and secured power connections to the mother board
-sysstem repair (same as restore)
-Began a virus scan but computer crashed before it could finish
-checked CPU heat (remains 35-45 degrees Celsius even while playing games)

let me know what information I need to add.

A:Computer Randomly Crashes and Restarts

Could be either your power supply, or RAM. Start with the easiest test first go here and download the .iso and burn to a CD and check your RAM.

Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

As for the power supply, your BIOS might monitor the voltages. If so check that the voltages are in spec. If the BIOS doesn't monitor voltages, you will need to use a Volt-Ohm-Meter.

Ok, it sounds silly but it does exactly that. Sometimes it restarts itself, sometimes it just freezes and sometimes it gives the BSOD. Totally randomly. It may happen few times within one hour or it may not happen for a day. Usually it happens few times a day.
Here is what I have done:
1. Cleaned all the dust.
2. Tried to remove memory sticks one by one and run with just one of them. If I only have one stick it crashes less often but still does.
3. Run memtest with one memory stick. After 30 passes still no errors.
4. Upgraided from vista to windows7 ultimate.
5. Checked power supply voltage - OK. Re-checked next day - still OK.
6. Checked processor temperature with everest and speedfan. Looks OK though T goes up to 47-50 the maximum is 55 for my Athlon 64x2 5000+.

Don't know what else I could do... Here I attach 5 latest minidumps and I would really appreciate any help.

Hi all.

I'll try to keep it brief.

I built my own PC a while ago, which decides to restart itself and crash randomly. Just the other day it completely crashed in the middle of a DVD and failed to start up properly time and time again. I got to a screen which was apparently "checking the consistency" of my disks, during which process it decided to restart itself a few times.

It works fine now but who knows when the next crash will occur.

It crashed a little while ago so I downloaded dumpchk.exe and analyzed the dump file from the time of the BSOD.

The text output from dumpchk.exe can be found in the attachment dump.txt.

Could anyone see a reason why I'm having these problems?

Many thanks in advance.

Thanks to anyone who helps or attempts to do so.

A:XP SP2: explorer.exe randomly crashes and always crashes when in folders

Have you done any recent updates or installed any new software to the computer?

Also, I would suggest downloading HiJackThis! and then including the log file in a post so that it can be looked at by one of the qualified agents here in order to help you out. Also you might try downloading and installing MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware and running it. I have found that program to be quite helpful in identifying potential OS issues.

If you are getting explorer.exe crashes as often as you say, then there may be more serious damage to your operating system that will potentially result in a clean reinstall.

Hi,

I hope I'm posting in the correct forum as I wasn't quite sure which one to put this under. Anyway, I have IE (How do I find out what version?), and I have Windows Vista (Again, how do I find out what version I have?). I will be reading blogs, visiting websites, typing on my own blog, etc. and IE will radomly close and immediately restart. The only message that I'm getting is, "IE has encountered a problem and needs to close." As for anti-virus protection, I have Spy Sweeper, and I run it every one to two days, and I always quarantine everything that shows up. I haven't downloaded anything new that I can think of as far as programs go. I have downloaded digital scrapbooking kits, but they are all from the same company, one that I definitely trust, and I've been downloading from them long before I started having this problem. I guess that's all. If there is anything else I can do to help solve the problem, please let me know.

Thanks so much!

Hi this just started happening today. I'm not sure what happened to trigger it. I have run virus scan and it didn't found any infected files.

Explorer.exe will load when my machine starts up. About every 5-10 seconds, it will close, meaning my desktop blinks off. Another 10 seconds later (or around that) explorer.exe will start again and my desktop will come back.

Eventually, it stops trying to load and the desktop stays off. I can go to task manager and run explorer.exe to repeat the process of having explorer.exe run, stop, run, etc.

I don't receive any error messages when this happens.

This machine has the latest Microsoft updates incl service pack 2.

Any help would be appreciated.

My explorer.exe constantly crashes and restarts; however, when I go into safe mode it works perfectly which means it is a driver problem. So I began to use the app, DriverView, to look at all the drivers I have and sure enough I find 3 very suspicious files that are most likely the cause to my problem.They looked suspicious because their file type was listed as unknown and their description was blank.the three files were:dump_dumpata.sysdump_dumpfve.sysdump_msahci.sysThey are said to be located at C:\Windows\System32\Drivers but when I looked there i couldn't find them. I tried scanning for viruses in normal and safe mode using AVG but I found nothing. I then uninstalled AVG and installed Avira. I also scanned in normal and safe mode using Avira but I still found nothing. The virus blockers i used also were updated. For some reason I just can't findi them. I was logged in under my limited account and my anti-virus detected the .wmf but it could not take action, I believe due to the fact I use system restore. A:Problem- Right click on anything and explorer crashes and restarts

Hello Dave84 Welcome to the Seven Forums!

You can start up the System File Checker tool at the Start>Run command line. (refer to image attached)

That won't require any right clicking on anything. You could even add the Takeownership option to the right click menu but will need to first repair the present Windows installation since this sounds like one or more system files are corrupted.

The other thought on this is a possible malware infection leaving you with corrupted files like the explorer.exe sheil file used by Windows Explorer as well as the Computer desktop icon for browsing drives.

Hello,

So for the past month or so, explorer.exe has been crashing continuously. It happens on several occasions...

-Most notable when I first boot up Windows 7, it crashes and restarts in an assiduous manner, for maybe 10-15 times until it stops suddenly and starts working again

-When accessing files which force explorer to open, e.g. when I open a document, open the 'My Downloads' folder, and such locations (the crashing and restarting scenario occurs in every situation)

I haven't found a solution as of yet. I even tried ending the process in Task Manager and running it again... with the result of it continuing to freeze and restart even after I run it form Task Manager, until as usual, it suddenly stops crashing and starts working again.

Is there any possible solution to this which doesn't involve any type of System Restore/OS wipe?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. PC is defragged, registry and junk files cleaned using CCleaner and Disk Cleanup, issue still persists. SpyBotS&D cannot detect any malware, and ESET NOD32 cannot detect any viruses or infections either.

A:explorer.exe crashes and restarts when certain actions are performed

This is usualy caused by a bad file filter installed in explorer. And you can usualy trace it down to what type by noticing what files are in the folders you are opening.

Unless this happens at the default "libraries" or "Computer" entries as well...

Can you shed any light on where it does and maybe does not crash?

Did you install anything (Codecs, Office programs etc) just before this started?

Hello,

After days of troubleshooting via trying resolution methods from various forums, I finally have to submit a help topic, because I am out of ideas short of re-installing windows.

explorer.exe crashes whenever I do one of the following items:
- Right click on desktop to see display properties; the right-click menu never comes up; explorer just crashes. (I can get to the display properties fine through control panel.)
- Open up Start/Programs and enter an application sub-menu. Explorer doesn't crash until the sub menu opens, sometimes instantly, sometimes in a few seconds.
- Hovering over an icon on my desktop. Explorer does not crash when hovering over shortcuts, only when I hover over a file sitting on the desktop.
- Trying to open My Computer. A window opens up and the flashlight appears momentarily, then explorer crashes, which also closes the window.
- Trying to browse files via Start/Run or through Task Manager. Explorer crashes after several seconds, regardless of which drive or directory I am browsing. There may be an additional pattern there too as the time it takes explorer to die varies, but I have yet to determine a pattern if there is one. For Start/Run, the window closes, for task manager, sometimes the window freezes when explorer crashes and restarts, and the task manager icon in the task bar never goes away until I pass over it with my mouse.
- Trying to open up administrative tools from the control panel. Other controal panel options ... Read more

I have had an on going issues with Vista crashing and then restart, some times it does it so quick that I hardly notice it because it was just the OS restarting not the computer rebooting. The how and why Vista would restart was unknown though I do remember a couple of times I would get a media player error but that was not consistant.

However, now the error is consistant and I can replicate it. On certain files, when I would RIGHT Click on the file to look their property Vista will crash and after scanning itself, restart up. At first I have not paid attention to the files in question but today I noticed that when I went to look at the properties for Gas Powered Games' Dungeon Siege 2, because it crashes every time I try to start it (I just reinstalled the game yesterday and while I ran into an online issue, was able to play the single player version fine but today when I tried to start the game it won't start and crashes).

I did two searches under Vista restarting and Vista restarting when Right Clicking properties and after reading the 75 results, there were a few threads that had very similar issues but they were locked and none of them had an answer.

So, let's try it again, anyone got a clue about this issue?

My system is an ACER, that I keep updated with Microsoft Update and protected by AVG as well as the Microsoft utilities.

A:Explorer Crashes and then restarts when Right Click on Properties

Are you sure its not just Windows Explorer crashing? I don't see how the OS could restart but not the computer. Try typing sfc /scannow into your start menu. This will check you system files and repair them if they are indeed damaged.

Hello,

The problem I am encountering is that my windows explorer crashes for no appearent reason. Windows itself keeps running, but when I'm going through my files I will randomly get popups that say "windows explorer has stopped working" followed by a message that "windows explorer is restarting," which it then does. Everything disappears, start button, taskbar, everything related to explorer, and then appears again.

Most of the time (99/100) explorer still works, I can click and drag windows or I can open folders and files while Windows is "looking for a solution," which makes me think that it's more a registry problem than a real problem with Explorer.

The problems first began after I cleaned up my pc, uninstalling games and useless software, deleting some personal files, and letting CCleaner clean up my registry. Also I had CCleaner do a "disk erase," something I never did before. When the problems began, I restored the registry using the backup CC created. The problem still exists.

It does appear to happen more frequently when I'm browsing my C:\Program files folder or my C:\Windows folder, but other than that there is no clear reason it crashes.

I know most of you will say that I should simply do a repair install of W7, but since I have no disk I have to use a iso, and since I am working on a Dutch Home Premium x64, there is no iso available. For some strange reason I decided not to make regular system repair poin... Read more
