Q: Windows Updates "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes.

My Dell laptop has not been able to install the newest 2018 updates for Windows 7. A total of 8 fail to install every night. I have turned off my McAfee firewall to reinstall - failure. I have tried installing the 6 lesser important &
smaller updates (5 downloaded, 1 failure) only to find that when laptop was restarted all failed to install. System reverted. What to do now? I am NOT a techie and don't want to fiddle around with folders that I am not famiiar with.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an Asus VivoTab Smart that comes with Windows 8, and before I can do the 8.1 upgrade, I have to install all 112 updates.  This was going just fine until after it rebooted, and now it's been stuck on the "Failure configuring Windows updates,
Reverting changes" screen for about the past 12+ hours.  I restarted it a couple of times by holding down the power button, but it comes right back to the same screen after the Asus splash screen.  Were this a laptop, I know exactly how
to fix it (go to Advanced Recovery Options), but since it's a new tablet that I haven't yet connected its Bluetooth keyboard to, I'm basically stuck.  I can't even boot to a flash drive because that requires a keyboard to get to the boot options.
What can I do?  None of the other forum posts related to this work because I don't have a keyboard attached to it and because the OS isn't loaded (can't get the Charms  bar so I can restart it that way or boot into Safe Mode or anything.)

A:Windows 8 tablet stuck on "Failure configuring Windows updates, reverting changes"

All right, I got it figured out - for Windows tablets, holding the Volume Down button while pressing the Power button will give you the Boot Options menu, so I used my 4-port USB hub (tablet has one micro USB port) and plugged in both a Windows 8 recovery
disk flash drive and a USB keyboard and mouse and did a System Restore from there.  Updates are still taking eons to install, but at least it's working now.

Ill give you the whole break down If anyone can pleasseee help.

At first my HP laptop froze as I was shutting down. So I manually turned the computer off by holding the power button. Upon turning the laptop back on, I got a message saying windows is updating, but once it got to about 35% it pretty much froze and refused to continue updating or anything. So I again manually switched the computer off holding down the Power. Now upon rebooting again~! now I recieve a message saying Failure Configuring Windows Updates, Reverting Changes....but now the screen just gets frozen here....and upon shutting down and rebooting now it keeps giving me the failure configuring, reverting changes message.....

Ive tried to enter using Safe mode, but the screen still just gets stuck when giving me that message...

I could really use some advice, or an explanation of what is going on or what I can do.

Any Help would be most definitely gratefully appreciated.

I just bought new Asus Vivotab Smart Windows 8 tablet, after the very first windows update it failed to install some of the updates, and then after the reboot I am now stuck with the message "Failure configuring Windows updates, reverting changes".
It never gets any further than this, it never reverts, I have left it running for an entire day and have restarted several times.

please note that this is a tablet, so there is no keyboard so I cannot press any F keys to get into recovery mode, and no CD to boot from etc.

Hi guys,

Last night I did a system refresh and this was the result this morning, faaaantastic!

I am currently having an issue on my laptop at the moment where it's stuck in an infinite loop of 'reverting changes' after having tried to update and failed at 30%, I have done some reading at ways to boot into safe mode however it would appear windows 8 doesn't give me the chance.

I do not have a copy of my original windows 8 disc and am at a loss, please help!
Edit; I have tried spamming F4, F8, F10 buttons and none are allowing me to enter boot mode.

A:Failure Configuring Windows Updates 'Reverting Changes'

Open the Admin command (Win+X->Command Prompt(Admin)) and type:
bcdedit /set {current} safeboot minimal
Restart your PC, it should boot into safe mode.

To remove it from booting into safe mode, run from Admin Command:
bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot

Hello, i restored my samsung sidesync homysync lite laptop to factory image, it installed 97 updates and then after restarting multiple times i get this " Failure configuring windows updates, Reverting changes, Do not turn off your computer." I get this for more than 3 hours now, i tried to restart it but i keep getting this,i cant get in windows. What can i do?

A:failure configuring windows updates, reverting changes

That many updates will take a very long time to revert. Let it do it's job. When things return to normal, install 5 at a time, less wear and tear on the computer and less frustration for you. If you get an update that won't install, hide it temporarily and continue on with the rest then come back to the ones that did not install.

Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter from this site before proceeding with the updates.

I've been stuck on this screen for awhile now and its quite annoying. I just got this laptop about a week ago and haven't really done much on it. I recently did put a whole bunch of pictures on it though that I really don't want to lose, that would be really terrible really. Anyway, this screen won't go away, all I did was try to update it to Windows 8.1 cause a message popped up saying to do that from the computer settings button that you find on the charm bar. I did try turning it off and on because another forum said that that worked for them. Then after restarting it came right back to this screen. But I literally can't do anything because it's stuck on this screen! Any advice?

A:Failure configuring Windows updates/ reverting changes/

I hope that you still have the backup of your pictures.

Your problem is not very clear, it looks like you are talking about two different things. There is no popup that will tell you to update to Windows 8.1 by "saying to do that by the computer settings in the charms bar", it just isn't done that way.

The best bet would be to use the recovery partition in your computer to reset to original factory conditions, see your computer manual on how to proceed.

When done install all the windows updates then go to the Windows Store to get and install the Windows 8.1 update.

I restarted my Samsung model np365e5c-s01us this morning. Upon restarting a green screen displaying the words "failure configuring Windows updates reverting changes do not restart your computer." Appeared. I waited over 2 hours with no change. I tried restarting the laptop several times including removing the battery and leaving it out for 15 minutes. Still no change. I researched and tried multiple solutions online, including pressing f8 and other keys upon boot up, nothing worked. I was not able to pull up any settings screens or any other screens besides the green screen with the failure message. Any advice?

A:Failure configuring Windows updates reverting changes do not

That can take 7 or 8 hours to perform the reversion
Just turn on computer, walk away and let it do its thing without interfering.
On odd occasions I saw it take almost 24 hours before it reverted.

I recently tried updating to windows 10 but got update errors, I ran sfc /scannow and found I had corrupted files, however it couldn't fix them. I tried everything and had to resort to upgrading windows 7 again to repair all windows files. This required me to install updates again. I downloaded and installed all 201 updates then when I booted my computer this earlier it got to the stage where it said Failure configuring windows updates reverting. Does anyone know how long this is going to take I've already been waiting 30 mins and need my PC ASAP . Also is there any work around to this?

A:Please HELP - Failure configuring Windows Updates Reverting changes

Try downloading/installing like 10 or 20 updates at a time and install the updates you can install for now.
Go to updates history and check which one is failings, uncheck it so you can minimize the loop here, then try to solve the failing update after that.

This is a message that could piss off the Pope.  I'm reloading computers and doing massive amounts of updates, as many as 210 at a time, and sometimes I get this message.  And it doesn't take out just the defective update, it takes out ALL the updates done in that session!
Is there a way to fix this problem or minimize the amount of time wasted on it?
I always run the Microsoft 50123 fixit before updating.  Sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn't.
What causes this enormous time-waster?

A:Failure configuring Windows updates, reverting changes.....

Try running the system readiness tool before the updates. It's a kludge but you could run approx 20 updates at a time. That way the most it could take out would be 20.

Is there anything I can do to get past this message? I've tried getting into safe mode a couple of times but nothing seems to work.

Since a few days, there are A LOT of computers that are experiencing a problem with Windows Update. When booting the computer, a screen with the following appears: "Failure configuring Windows Updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer.". For some people, the problem is fixed is 10 minutes, but in general it takes 30minutes to an hour! We have cases of people that needed to wait for more then 3 hours.
When booted, you can see that some updates are failed. Last week, we thought that it was KB2952664, but today we see that the problem has returned at computers where the update is hidden or already installed.
Is anybody seeing the problem and does anybody has a fix?
It literally happening to more then 15 of our clients and i've seen it on more then 30 computers.
Disabling Windows Update seems the only fix at the moment.

I can't boot into safe mode, and I can't boot normally.  Any suggestions on how to get to where I can do a system restore?

I was checking out a friends laptop for them and noticed it had 155 updates needing to be installed. I went ahead and let them install. Now I have the message "Failure configuring Windows updates Reverting changes". It has been this way for about 1.5 hrs. It will sometimes stop and says restarting and then goes right back to "Failure configuring Windows updates Reverting changes". Is this normal behavior when you have 155 updates at once? Or is it just stuck in a loop? Should I force a shutdown even though it says "Do not turn off your computer"? Need some advice as to what to do.

I'm assuming it is 8.1 but I'm not 100% sure. It could be just 8 but I don't think it is.

UPDATE: It just restarted and booted to desktop. It took about 1.5 hours of "Failure configuring Windows updates Reverting changes" with multiple restarts in between. I think I will do a few updates at a time since there are so many. Maybe that will help.

I've seen a ton of these threads but all the advice seems to be "do this thing on your computer" and as the issue is the screen is stuck on "Failure configuring windows updates, reverting changes" and I am unable to get past it to log in, that advice isn't
all that relevant to me.
My laptop was hard reset in the middle of trying to shut down for updates because the battery was low and it became fully depleted before I noticed. It was stuck on "preparing to configure windows, don't turn off your computer" for about 6 hours. So I tried
rebooting it in safe mode. When it loaded it said the same thing, then rebooted its self and brought its self back into normal mode, this time displaying "Failure configuring windows updates, reverting changes. Don't turn off your computer". It's been 3 hours
now. Do I just wait it out...?
Acer Timeline X notebook computer, windows 7 64bit.
As an aside: Lol I guess I should get a mac...?

A:Failure configuring windows updates, reverting changes. Unable to log on.

I suggest you attempt a boot recovery/repair. Do you have the original install disc?

No need to reinstall the OS yet, but if you have the CD you can repair the files that are causing the boot loader to fail, this may be installed on the HDD by the manufacturer.

The System Recovery Options menu contains several tools, such as Startup Repair, that can help you recover
Windows from a serious error. This set of tools is on your computer's hard disk and on the
Windows installation disc.

And no, this is not a good enough reason to switch to mac!  ;)

Ok when I restart my computer to configure updates, it goes up to 90% and then says that. But it reboots again and tries to configure a second time but still says failure, it does this 3 times and then I can log in. I think it may have something to do with the error (on my other thread) I have on a update and its affecting this, but I don't know what the problem is. If you see the picture, imagine seeing that one time and it reboots and says that 2 more times. That's what's happening to me.

There are too many updates to install at one time. Install 5 at a time, if any cause problems hide them temporarily and continue on to the next batch. It is probable that the .NetFramwork are blocking some of them.

Before doing the above run the Windows Update Troubleshooter:
Troubleshoot problems with installing updates - Windows Help

Windows Key + X, select Command Prompt (Admin) and type exactly sfc /scannow

Here is a free tip when you download software that does not charge money to people who want to use it watch out for any bundeled applications that come along with the "free software" this is the reason why you got infected by that virus.Do not just go through to the installer read carefully what you are allowing to be installed because that bundeled applications is the author of the free software way of making money not so nice if you ask me.Also removing that virus involves editing the registry did you do that ? (note if you formatted your harddrive then all is gone offcource)

Hey, everyone. I just found this forum while googling trying to find a solution to my problem, and I'm hoping you'll be able to help. I've tried everything I can think of. My laptop tried to update earlier. It froze mid-update, and then I started getting the "Failure configuring, reverting" thing. I was unable to boot in safe mode, and multiple attempts at a system restore (to all available dates) resulted in failure, saying 'failed to extract the file (D:\Windows\servicing\Packages\PACEF9~1.MUM) from the restore point.' If I can't find a solution to this tonight, I'll be taking it into a repair shop in the morning, but I'm really hoping I don't have to do that.

After a Windows update and restart the following problem appeared
When the Windows 7 64 machine is started it boots correctly then immediately goes to a blue "Configuring Windows" screen followed, after a couple of minutes, by the "Failure Configuring Windows Update Reverting Changes" screen. After
around 3 hours this eventually changes to "Shutting down". This has been left overnight and still says "Shutting down". During start up I don't get to the log-on screen and don't have access to any settings. A shared partition on the machine
is visible from other computers and a SQL database can be accessed during the Reverting Changes stage.
I can restart the machine successfully in Safe Mode and have tried a clean boot. Chkdsk has been run. Microsoft Help says use FixIt but FixIt doesn't run in Safe Mode and I can't access the machine after a normal boot to run it then. Diagnostics doesn't
work in Safe Mode. For the same reasons I can't turn off Windows Update or attempt a reinstall. An attempt to restore to a previous version doesn't work giving an 0x80070005 error code.
Reinstalling the OS from disk seems like overkill and a huge investment in time (bringing back up to date and reinstalling software). Surely there must be a way of bypassing or deleting the failed update or the service that is trying to configure it?
Our small business is reliant on this machine so we are quite desperate for a solution.

Once the download is complete and I restart, I get the message, 'Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not try to turn off your computer.'

I've tried the steps listed at https://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358 (aside from system restore), and none of them have had any effect. My Windows 8 HAS been authenticated.

I've Googled the problem and tried a few things, including the video at the bottom of this post, but nothing's working. Any help would be appreciated.

I'll be out of the country and away from my home PC until this Friday, so won't be able to try any solutions until then.

Aside from the System Restore? Meaning did you try it or not? Also did you try the Fixit from Microsoft? Fixit

So when I previously turned off my desktop computer, Windows 7 installed over 200 updates before turning off properly. When I turned my computer on again after a while, a message appeared: "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off the computer" The message stayed in loop for over an hour and then I turned off the computer by pressing down the power button. I repeated this several times in safe mode and command prof but nothing changed.
My computer hasn't had this issue before.
If there are any solutions, a step-by-step guide would be helpful as tech isn't my strongest attribute

Hello everyone.

Recently I have beend installing updates on my PC that runs on Windows 7 Ultimate. Three days ago it was rebooting as usual but then this erros message shows up " Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer ". So as recommended I didn't turn off the computer and just waited. After a while I went to bed and left my PC on overnight to see if the problem would be solved by the morning. It wasn't so I just pressed the power button for 5 seconds and restarted my PC. Since then I haven't been able to acces anything since it just stays on that error for hours.

Starting up in safe mode doesn't solve anything.
I've read somewhere that pressing F8 before the Windows logo shows up brings up a booting menu where I can choose some repair option. When I press F8 I just get a windows where I can pick 2 options which I guess is the hard drive and something else, but that does't solve my problems. I also don't own any sort of repair discs or flash drives.

Any help would be apreciated.

If something isn't clear enough just ask and I will try my best to explain myself (English isn't my native language).

Thanks in advance

Hi, if you can boot to safe mode do so and in advanced boot options you should see a option "repair your computer", if not I am afraid you will need a copy of the OS dvd (could you borrow one), the repair your computer option (RE) allows you to access a command prompt, from this we can fix your problem, you need to boot from the dvd and go past the language setup and select the second option which is "repair your computer"

select command prompt, at the x sources prompt type:-

bcdedit | find "osdevice" (exactly as shown here, the | is called a "pipe" and can be found above the \ key). It will return an OS partition drive letter (usually C:) use whatever drive letter you see in the following commands, will will assume C:.

At the x\: sources> prompt, type:-

C: (press enter) next type:-

cd C:\windows\winsxs (press enter).

Next type:- ren pending.xml pending.old (press enter).

Next Type:- regedit (press enter)

On the File menu, click Load Hive

The select hive location will open, browse to C:\windows\system32

Locate the following folder: C:\windows\system32\config\components, (the one that say's simply "components") click to select.

When you are prompted for a name, type:- Offline

In Registry Editor, you will now see a key "Offline" expand the + & locate and then delete the following registry subkeys:-

HKLM\Offline \AdvancedIns... Read more

This has become a daily ritual...

At 8pm every night, my system shuts down. Sometimes I catch it and delay it 4 hours but other miss the warning.
It takes about 8-10 minutes to get back to where I was before the shutdown.

"Shutting Down"
"Starting Windows"
"Failure configuring Windows updates"
"Reverting Changes"
"Don't shut off your computer"
Shuts down and reboots
"Starting Windows - please wait"
Then it is back up.

When I shut it down for the night - about 10 minutes

"Please do not power or unplug your machine"
"Installing updates 1 of 9, 2 of 9...

Power up in the morning - 4 to 5 minutes

"Starting Windows"
"Preparing to configure"
"Failure configuring Windows Updates"
"Reverting Changes"
"Do not shut down your computer"
"Shutting down computer"
"Starting Windows"
"Please wait"
"Preparing to configure Windows"
"Configuring Windows"

Is there anything I can do to end this?
